Well, given the times I yell at @staff and @changes it seems they've either:

Put out a new A/B dashboard on web and not said anything yet, but I'm in the "old" group.

Undid the most recent bad changes / at least restored the avatars on all reblogs.

Gonna put my hope on the second one and assume they just wanted to wait until it was time for the clown pirate to be given to everyone before restoring things.

just grumbling about the tumblr posting experience.

I've been back on tumblr for a few years now and I'm still an annoyed and flailing mess when it comes to actually using the editor and making my vid or fic posts. there's always something that goes wrong and then I either have too many notes on it to want to make a new post or I can't figure out what the fuck I can do to make it look right and spend a stupid amount of time trying to edit to make sure everything is working. nevermind I hate figuring out how to format things here. for instance: I started drafting up my Fringilla vid, dropped my Youtube embed there and discovered it had a thumbnail of Francesca. So I made my Fringilla screencap and uploaded it to YouTube. the vidpost looks fine on desktop with Fringilla showing up on the preview image. but nooo on mobile it still shows Francesca in the preview. At least it does on my mobile. is it Francesca for everyone else on the mobile app? it's just a dumb thing to be annoyed about. but annoys me enough to actually make a post it. also I can't seem to remember to make proper titles on my tumblr posts before actually hitting post. run back to edit in but now all the reblogs say 'watching streaming on ao3' lmao, whyyyy. what a dumb thing to be irritated by. pfft. and I still have no idea if YouTube embeds fail to make posts show up in the tags. but I get the impression people might be more likely to watch an embed than clicking over to AO3 or wherever. I'm not a gif-maker and I don't think gifs of my vids have the same kind of impact without the music. so I dunno what to do to make things look prettier. I LOVE finishing things, I love people getting to see my fanworks. but my god I just hate posting and crossposting so goddamn much. Sometimes I have a streamlined process for my dreamwidth/twitter feeds but the bulk of my peeps there are not witcher folks anyway so that's not a crossposting priority for my witcher goodies. anyway. I made a Fringilla vid to escape my depressive woes. I love fringilla. you can check out my fringilla vid with alllllll my feelings for her right here.

Sometimes I don't understand why something, that has specific priorities and tasks to do, will end up looking like it does. Today it is how tumblrs video player and image gallery for mobile device looks like.

Let's go into detail, shall we?! Sooo, here are the Elements that we got. I will list this in a grouped order, so ppl understand quickly what this might be and has a connection to.

First of we have Navigation and Orientation. So where am I, how to get back or move forward.

Back button (It's low priority to reach, bc phones have an integrated back button already)

Profile Picture of the User and Name (Who)

Title of content (What)

Secondly we have the stuff that's the actual content we want to see and/or interact with, plus everything related to it.

Actual Content (Text, Image, in this case a Video)

Control bar for images or video

Like and share, etc

Edit button (when logged in)

The Content (1) and the Control bar (2) should be visually grouped together, so ppl understand what they suppose to do with it. Breaking this two elements apart, without any reason, is simply confusing to me. Although, on mobile, it would be a good idea to not position the control bar on top of the content area, bc of the simple fact, that your hand will cover up parts of the screen and content u might want to see, if u interact with it.

To layout this like YouTube and other video platforms might be boring standard, but they maybe have good reasons to design it this way, bc from an UX and UI perspective it just works!

So Tumblr plz, get an UX designer on board before u release experiments like this.

How do you decide if you want to reblog with actual text or talk in the tags? What drives it one way or the other?

So the tumblr image lightbox is even worse than I realized. Pinch-to-zoom and then single-touch scroll is fucked up by the "tumblr tv" algo feed or whatever they call it, so looking around a zoomed-in image is impossible without accidentally flipping to another image you didn't want to see.

And the tap to hide captions/info, so you can, you know, see the image you're trying to look at? Just makes those elements transparent, it doesn't make them non-interactable. Which means tapping anywhere in like the lower quarter of the image takes you to a new pane of the exact same post you were on. UNLESS you happen to click where the Blaze button was, guess what that brings you to.

Could Automattic stop messing up Tumblr further? The top link was from the desktop dashboard, trying to get a share link for a bang post, using the share arrow and copy link function. The bottom from going on to the web facing side of the blog and copying a link. FFS. The new inability to edit posts made on mobile via desktop and vice versa was bad enough.

Stop messing up this site, Automattic.
