As someone who's not apart of the LGBTQ, but knows quite a few things abt it, I feel saddened abt the fact that Asexuality is pushed aside. I understand that the media is the media, and that people won't simply 'respect' the boundaries of fictional character but the discourse would be totally different if, for example, The sexuality of a gay character was getting erased.
There would be so many more people fighting abt it, and how it would be wrong to write them as something their not and erase apart of their identity. After a long think I can only recognize a singular, 'canon' asexual character in the recent media. With that being Frieren (beyond journeys end), but even then its a simple stop and go. Albeit one that i'm glad that happened.
What I mean to say is, Asexuality is a spectrum. And it can be in any level at any given time, but completely throwing away that spectrum to write a character for purely NSFW reasonings, and basically .. dehumanizing(?) them because you don't like how they identify is as wrong as doing that to any other sexuality.
As we see an influx of characters who break the 'social norms' a majority of people are used to, I assumed more people would recognize the fact that every sexuality, belief and identity is equally important and should be celebrated. But i'm also glad people are being taught why it's an issue.
I think dehumanizing is a great word when it comes to talking about what people do to aroace/ace characters. Everyone plays with these characters, ships them, makes sexual art of them, and then use the excuse of how they're only fictional, and that they can headcanon them however they want.
The second I see someone ship a canonically gay character with a girl or a canonically lesbian character, everyone talks about how they're erasing rep, they should leave characters canon identities alone, etc while they're writing a 300 page smut fanfic with some ace character.
Instead of exploring that character and their platonic relationships (and also romantic and nonsexual in case of just ace characters), they take away that quality of the character. I wish fandoms knew how to treat aroace/ace characters.
