I have literally seen people argue that even platform censorship is still just “holding people accountable”, and censorship doesn’t count as censorship unless the government is doing it.
Tumblr media
>there’s no moral judgement about it
Tumblr media
Yes there is. That’s the whole reason people do it.
And then there’s this post, which is too long and pretentious and self-absorbed to screencap.
And that’s me talking.
I like the implication that anyone accused of having Crimethink material must’ve carefully and deliberately written it in to have that effect, when a great deal of controversies are about people “seeing” implications that were not intended by the author.
Often they just make crap up from thin air.
Like the people who said JK Rowling is anti-Semitic because the goblins kind of resemble Jewish stereotypes. When others went “no, goblins have been like that in mythology for centuries”, several people went “that’s because goblins are based on Jewish stereotypes”.
No evidence, of course.
Just Guilt By Similarity.
People have explicitly said that even a lack of intent doesn’t matter if they think your fiction can have a Bad Effect or just resembles a Bad Thing. If anything, doing it by accident is worse, because you’re not Properly aware.
Or the people who claim the franchise is fascist and white supremacist, even though it’s about fighting bad guys modeled on the Nazis and “prejudice is bad” and is written by a progressive.
Heck, one Vtuber apparently got harassed into retirement just because she wanted to play Hogwarts Legacy and wasn’t aware of the controversy. I saw people claim that anyone playing the game was going against the wishes of Jews and trans people.
At least one even claimed that it didn’t matter if the allegations were actually right. People should bend the knee anyway, just to be a “good ally”.

you come across as extremely smart, thoughtful, and measured--i don't always agree with you but when we disagree i feel like your disagreements always come from a place that is fundamentally worth productively acknowledging and engaging with, and i really value that.

Personally I think that if someone makes a post dancing on the grave of an activist who was murdered by the police, and goes on to say that actually, it's good when a massive police training center is forced on a city's population, it's not unreasonable for me to suggest that they might be engaging in a little trolling. In fact some might even appreciate that I was giving them the benefit of the doubt.

I have to love how there's a post going around telling people not to reblog misinformation about people, only for the original poster @triviallytrue to have blocked me because of misinformation spread about me, since I haven't interacted with this user. Like you don't even practice what you preach or else you wouldn't block people you don't know since you don't know if what you're reading is true.

even if you like don't particularly care about the construction of Cop City I don't know how you could look at the police and legislative crackdown on the movement against it and not see that crackdown as a model for new/revived styles of American political repression. unless you are being deliberately obtuse. heaven forbid.

> but i think the other big difference is that many more people are aware of bigotry as a distinct thing from “being edgy”
No?
IME, a lot of people explicitly say and act like edgy jokes cause the same damage as sincerely saying the edgy things, even if the joker doesn’t. I’ve seen people go “well, I know X didn’t mean Y, but it could be interpreted that way, and that’s also bad.”
Even about non-joke stuff.
As if people are inherently, automatically responsible for others getting them wrong.
This wasn’t just some randos either. This was a big, international controversy.
>there are tons of racists on the internet but most of them are aware they are being racist and that this is a thing most people disapprove of,
This seems like a claim that would be extremely difficult to prove. Especially the “they know they are being racist” part.*
Most people don’t like to be factually wrong. Racism is factually wrong. I’ve seen quite a lot of racists build up elaborate structures of rationalization to avoid admitting the truth.
They will often shout from the rooftops that they are clearly, obviously correct, and the people who disagree are in denial.
Sometimes they will call those critics racist.
Tumblr media
So what’s the actual difference between being edgy and actually being bigoted? Because you’re acting like there was no difference.
I don’t think you ever explain the difference at any point.

> of the censoriousness and the compelled public apologies (and the still-extant class of right wing shitheads that haven’t been fully exiled from the public sphere)
TT, how exactly do you think many left-wing people are trying to get (perceived) right-wing people out of the public sphere?
Because it’s often censorship and compelled public apologies. And worse things, like straight up harassment. Rarely, violence.
Also, should left-wing bad people also be “exiled” from the public sphere the same as the right-wingers?
How do you think this exiling will be achieved?
> but at the very least i’m grateful that most of the mainstream content aimed at 13 year olds doesn’t have “women belong in the kitchen” jokes anymore
I’m not sure it ever did. At least not in the teen-targeted media I’ve seen for the past decade. I wonder if there was some sort of popular kids show or movie that was big - especially if it was big on this website - a decade ago.
Especially ones with feminist-acclaimed Strong Female Characters.

Anyway, someone who uses Shinigami Eyes and blocks others because of it has no moral high ground to call people out for bigotry.
(Also, TT doesn’t actually know what SE claims to ID. Thought it was just for TERFs.)
It’s also ironic when TT has made racist assumptions themselves.

a mindset that i really truly find incomprehensible is people who so thoroughly believe in an ontologically just world that when you explain a relation of causality to them (‘X happened because Y’), they interpret it as a normative relation (’Y justifies X’)—and then attack you for beliefs they now assume you hold. like fifty of these people are summoned into being whenever you try to talk online about, like, a realist view of geopolitics or the root causes of abuse and violence and i’m like. how can you exist in Reality with this worldview. how terrifying must the world be when you genuinely believe that evil simply manifests sui generis hermetically sealed from all causality

This is related to @triviallytrue's recent post(s) about tech worker unionization, but distinct enough from it that I figured it was worth putting in its own post:
If you're not in tech and get all your impressions of tech workers either or people who are Extremely Online, you might not appreciate that an overwhelming majority of "tech workers" are just ordinary white-collar workers, with all that implies about their politics. Yes, tech has some die-hard libertarians, a handful of unhinged reactionaries, and a smattering of revolutionary communists, but the modal tech worker has the generic normie liberal politics you'd expect of a high-education, high-income PMC member.
Same goes for their life and interests: I've now worked full-time in tech for about twelve years, and I promise you that to a first approximation, zero of my coworkers have ever heard of Peter Thiel, radical life extension, TESCREAL or anything people put under that umbrella, and so on. They're aware of Elon Musk and vaguely annoyed at him, but don't think about him very often. My coworkers mostly have spouses and children and houses in the suburbs, and when the weekend is over they come back on Monday morning and talk about their hiking trip or the concert they saw.
