I need to share this experience.

I just went to the National Museum Night to the National Museum of History, where a Professor of Classical Literature and Culture gave a lecture about... The Song of Achilles applying principles from fanfiction to the Illiad, giving Patroclus transmotivation to put the canon in a different perspective using the concept of "shipping".

I loved it.

Her doctorate student had written her thesis on the principles of fanfiction in The Song of Achilles and shipping Patrochilles. What an awesome PhD project is that! Reading The Song of Achilles and gushing about Patrochilles with your supervisor!

And I loved the middle aged man next to me blinking at the screen at a photo of Spock and Kirk giving each other smoldering looks while the Professor was explaining to a full hall the concept of "shipping".

Queers will say ACAB, and in the very next breath try to police other queers' identities. It's exhausting. . Discourse seems to be a constant "crabs in a bucket mentality" about what part of the community we throw under the bus. . Are he/him lesbians valid? Can you call yourself a bi lesbian? Is it femboy erasure to come out as trans? Do xenogenders count as trans? Is it okay for trans men to like their breasts? Are you allowed to use it/its pronouns? . Y'all, have you never heard of solidarity? . "Queer" is a categorization that defies categorization, and identities within that are often messy. Let the people in our community express themselves in whatever way feels right to them, and don't give them any grief about it. . Because if that he/him bi lesbian fights fascism, he is doing more to improve material conditions for us all than any of the liberal queers engaging in d i s c o u r s e on Twitter about whether or not that's a valid identity. . Do I get these identities? No. But I also don't get trans men because my entire experience with masculinity was wishing I didn't have to perform it. I don't get straight trans women either, because men ain't my cup of tea. But what I *do* get is that queer rights are under attack, and we'll all suffer as a result. . Has transitioning, overall, been a positive experience for you? . I was talking about this with my partner recently - we both revel in our transness and, while we wish certain things may have been different, we don't regret being trans. . Personally, I'm deeply grateful for being trans. It's brought moments of crushing pain and sorrow that felt like they might never end, but also some of the greatest moments of ecstacy I've ever experienced. The latter far outweighs the former. . I dunno homie this shit is dope imo. . But I also know a not insignificant number of trans people who view transness as an almost universal negative, by definition. I can understand how fortunate I've been - middle class, white, living in a relatively progressive country - but I just can't relate. . What do you think? When it comes to movements working toward social change, it can be hard to suss out the bad actors from those who genuinely want to make things better. . After all, it seems like nobody is actually happy with the direction the world is headed - on that, at least, it seems like we can all agree. . In my experience, I've found that broadly speaking, there are three types of social movements. . The first are movements led by the ultra rich. Those can be dismissed outright. The ultra rich never have our best interests in mind. . There are movements that recognize the status quo, that are unhappy with it, that recognize the injustice built into it, and that work to reorient society in a way that creates a new, more just, status quo. . There are other movements that recognize the status quo, but they're not unhappy that it exists - they just don't like their place in it. . Does a movement seem to be motivated by justice or self interest? . There are shades of grey, of course, but the former is something I can back. The latter, not so much. . So much of all the conservative noise right now feels like ideological death throes. . It's scary. . But they've lost the general public, and they know it. . They're throwing everything they can at the wall, and none of it is really sticking. . So many of their efforts are devoted to making them seem like their ideas are more popular than they really are. . They have a bunch of fake followers on Twitter. They become "bestselling authors" because of conservative groups who buy large quantities of their books in bulk. They have multibillion dollar media empires designed to spew their hatred nonstop. . And yet, none of it seems to really move the barometer one way or another. . The right of LGBTQIA+ to get married, adopt kids, have equal access to job opportunities, inherit from their partner, live free of discrimination, and even for trans people to be allowed to use the correct washroom, has been steadily improving over the last 20 or so years, according to Gallup polls. . When asked an open ended question about LGBTQIA+ people and how their views have changed, the most common answers are thet they're more tolerant, more educated, didn't properly understand the issue before, and that they've changed their mind. . Don't let the right wing screech show distract you. The tides ARE changing. Things ARE getting better. This latest push is a last ditch effort by the forces of hate to continue to divide us. . The anti trans lobby is pushing a narrative that “children cannot consent to hormones", which is interesting only because of how blatantly wrong it is. . In fact, there are far more hormones in the human body than the ones we use to trans our genders. They're given to children on a regular basis, and nobody bats an eye. . Insulin is a hormone, and without it, children with diabetes will die. Yet nobody is protesting that children cannot consent to insulin. . Children with hypothyroidism, a condition that causes their thyroid to be underactive, may be given supplementary triiodothyronine, which is the hormone their thyroid ought to be producing but isn't. Nobody cares about this either. . If your kid has trouble falling asleep, you might head to your local drug store and get them a melatonin supplement. This is a hormone as well, and again nobody cares. . We see these things as healthcare, and rightfully so. Transgender hormone therapy is, of course, healthcare too, but as soon as you mention it, Mrs. Lovejoy pops up to scream PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN . But this is all beside the point. . The whole reason we have "minor" as a recognized class of people is because children don't know stuff, so their parents/guardians are there to make decisions for them based on the best knowledge at the time. And when you have tons of credible research showing that gender affirming HRT is a good thing, and a few disgraced quacks and angry men with no credentials pushing against it, the decision seems obvious doesn't it? . Being able to switch between gendered voices feels like a superpower. . My car has a flat tire and I need a replacement, so I called a tire place and spoke to somebody who clearly didn't care. He was short, dismissive, and not helpful in any way. . Called back today using my dude voice, and told him I was helping my sister Sophie get a tire for her car, and could he make sure to look after her. . The tone of the conversation at that point was completely different - he was helpful, friendly, and even cracked a couple jokes. I got a great deal on my new tires, which "my sister" is going to pick up tomorrow. . Is this sexism? Maybe. It could also be that the first guy was having a crummy day, or the second guy was friendlier by nature. But if it was sexism, I was able to sidestep it entirely. . Transitioning really does make it clear how silly that old "I can't be racist I have black friends" yarn is doesn't it? . Like I have internalized transphobia and I take estrogen every day, how do you think having a black pal is suddenly gonna make you immune to anti black ideas? . Sure, you fucked up in the past. But have you *lost a quarter of a million dollars* fucked up? . I have. . And I'm not some rich kid either. I come from a working class family, and that sort of money would have genuinely completely change my life. . So how did I come upon that much money? . I bought some bitcoin back in ~2012 when it was around $500. 3.69 BTC, to be exact (nice). Had I sold that at its peak, it would have been nearly $300k in Canadian dollars. That would have been enough to buy a house, cash. . Instead, I lost the password to the wallet. . I've still got the wallet too. That 3.69 BTC still stares at me, mocking me. If I could just remember the password, the money I could get from selling it would still make a huge difference in my life. . But I can't - I've tried everything. . That's the costliest mistake I've ever made. . And I still find a way to move on and keep going. . I spent a lot of time beating myself up over at, until I realized that wasn't going to help me help me or anybody else. . It doesn't matter. None of it matters. All that matters is right now. . Past mistakes can weigh heavily, but they don't have to define you going forward. That's not to say you shouldn't learn from them, but, the lesson having been learned, you're allowed to move on and move forward. . I was recently reading about the gallae, the transgender Roman priestesses of the goddess Cybele, and it blows my mind how utterly ridiculous cis people are when they write about us - even the ones who don't openly hate us. . The gallae castrated themselves and lived as women their entire lives, it's about as unambiguously trans as anything you'll find in the ancient world. So why do cis writers have such a hard time calling it as such? . One of the cis writers I read interpreted them as wanting to be free of the pressure of a male social role. Which, lol. Just lol. . Another said that a few of them might have felt trans, but they were probably mostly cis men who FELT THE SPIRITUAL CALL TO CYBELE. . And I'm sorry but never in the history of humanity has a cis man ever felt so religious that he castrated himself and lived as a woman. Never. . So why is that the default? . Why is it SO hard for cis people to believe that transness has always existed? . The purpose of right wing media is to tell people who've never experienced things how they work in the most frightening way possible. . Remember when conservatives were losing their mind over WOKE INDOCTRINATION ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES? The way they talked about it, they made it seem like there were armed guards at the gates forcing you to declare your pronouns or whatever. . How many of the people who actually believed that junk do you think have ever actually set foot on a college campus? . But it must be true because the fancy man on TV said it is! And the fancy man is my friend because he tells me what is true every day. . Keep this in mind as you listen to people talk. What are they talking about, and what direct experience do they have with it? . Sure, nobody can experience everything. But when you find someone speaking authoritatively on a subject they have no real experience on, ask them how they know. Eventually, the best answer you'll get is "a guy told me," or "just watch this video bro trust me" . And, fine. . But that doesn't make them an authority on the subject. . Us leftists are not immune to this either. When we're in a space where people more knowledgeable than us are talking, it's a great idea to spend some time listening, or asking clarifying questions to expand your knowledge. .
