I was listening to one of the translated adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, and it was so jarring to listen to something so... straight. Don't get me wrong, the podcast was really really nice. I get that this language doesn't have many romantic pet names or pet names in particular. I get that this culture is very much removed from the context of romance and affection. But to listen to Sherlock Holmes just... being a detective? Solving crimes? Being just friends? It does not sit right with me. It is all about the "dear boy" and "my dear Watson" and "my dear doctor" and "it was worth a wound—". The adaptation was so so dry because they removed all traces of affection (because the language wasn't really one with many endearments). Even in a non shippy way, the deep bond that Holmes and Watson share is a large part of why the stories are so appealing to the audience. And the narration was good. The voices were really really good. But the delivery felt flat. All the jokes that they tried to crack didn't really land. And when I say straight, I am just saying that it was heterosexual, neurotypical, and just overall very cut and dry. And it wasn't really even the adaptation. They hadn't changed Holmes's behaviour, but the way everything was spoken just gave off that general vibe of straightness. Not that I'm saying I didn't enjoy it at all. Translations are always lovely because they can deliver to you these amazing stories that people wouldn't otherwise get to read. But the sheer homoeroticism of the original texts is and remains absolutely unparalleled.

the fact that native english speakers use the notion of ‘translated work’. ‘i am reading a translated novel.’ as in, it was not originally written in english. it was written in french, or spanish, can you imagine. or japanese if it’s murakami. and i’m just. do you realise that most people around the world read translated works why is this such a special notion to you. like not every book was written in english you know

This is the volume with all the extras....I loved loved loved parts of this and then had to drag myself through other parts of it, lol. It really depended on who the extra was focusing on. Overall though, really happy I got it and went ahead and got the special edition.

Dead Language Expert

Danny never thought that he could "major" in languages, and get a job as a translator. But apparently knowing all the dead languages ​​by default and being able to time travel with the help of your ghost tutor was pretty useful outside of Amity.

It happened purely by chance, he was walking through a museum and started laughing because of a mistake in one of the sentences that completely changed the meaning of the text. Exasperated, the halfa escaped from his escorts and continued his work as normal. Superman almost fell out of his chair at the Watchtower meeting when he was informed that the boy had translated the language of Krypton and other missing planets. Besides having managed to lose both the Flash and Green Latern, what the fuck?
