without a response, he hung up on you. you put the phone down and resumed filling out the sheets of paper that piled up on your desk.

a few moments later alex gave a quick knock to the door and slid in, closing it behind him. he looked as sleek as ever, navy suit adorning his figure, widows peak prominent with his slicked back hair. his heeled boots clacked on the floor as he made his way over to you.

Aimerais-je encore les Arctic Monkeys si ce n'étaient pas les Arctic Monkeys ?

Autant que ce soit clair : il ne s'agira pas ici de donner un avis ampoulé sur le septième album des Arctic Monkeys, The Car, qui servira plus ici de prétexte à une observation de mes goûts (douteux) et leur expansion.

Si les Arctic Monkeys nous avaient habitué à changer de peau régulièrement, difficile de prévoir le grand écart opéré en 2018 avec Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino, un concept-album qui propulsait Alex Turner en gérant d'un luxuriant hôtel lunaire. On a beau avoir entendu les rumeurs soupçonnant le disque d'être un projet solo de Turner repackagé pour des raisons marketing, la claque était immense, que l'on aime ou non : arrangement en longueur à la frontière du jazz, paroles déclamées façon Leonard Cohen, guitares et batterie au diapason sans dépasser ; qu'elle paraissait loin l'époque des tronches juvéniles, des cardigans et des guitares portées au niveau du torse. Une leçon à deux morales : l'une pour les amateurs, à qui leur était prouvé l'épanouissement d'une plume, l'autre pour les fans trop rigoristes, laissés sur le bord de la route sans ménagement.

Cette mue, bien plus radicale qu'auparavant, a apporté une surcouche à l'amour et la relation particulière que j'entretiens avec le groupe depuis mon adolescence, cette époque où l'on s'approprie les choses pour la première fois. Les Arctic Monkeys sont de celles-ci, transfiguratives, déterminantes, des reflets de vérité, des échos de ressenti quand les ressemblances (largement imaginées) entre ce groupe de potes qui joue de la musique et le nôtre renforcent l'attachement.

C'est un fait, j'ai les Arctic Monkeys dans la peau, et ce simple fait retire 83,9% d'intérêt à ce papier. Et j'aime The Car, ce retour sur Terre anachronique, cet OVNI des années 70 période cool funk et cinéma romantique. Alex Turner n'a semble-t-il jamais été aussi proche de réaliser un film. Il aurait dû : c'est sa BO que lui et les autres ont enregistré. Qui les aurait imaginés, au pic de leur gloire à la fin des années 2000, se lancer dans un funk à wah-wah ("I Ain't Quite Where I Think I am"), une soul hyper sexuelle ("Jet Skis on the Moat") ou un blues fantomatique à la Nick Cave ("Sculptures of Anything Goes") ? D'autant plus dur de deviner cette quasi-face B volée à Simon & Garfunkel ("Mr Schwartz", probablement le morceau le moins Arctic Monkeys de toute leur carrière, et y a pourtant du monde en compétition). À ce titre The Car en devient presque schizophrène, l'album étant clairement séparé entre une première moitié plus pop, plus chanson, quand la seconde (dès le morceau-titre, en fait) s'aventure de plain-pied dans la BO de film (le point d'orgue de cette partie, "Big Ideas", que l'on imagine automatiquement en générique de James Bond).

Si TBH+C était un échappatoire, une fuite en avant maquillée en délire science-fiction et plein de grandes manières, The Car est un disque plus terre-à-terre, presque plus sincère puisqu'il confirme la mue toujours brutale du groupe sans l'habiller d'un concept narratif qui aurait pu faire penser à un simple écart temporaire. C'est donc ça, les Arctic Monkeys en 2022 : ils n'ont pas vraiment tué les anciens, ni les sales gosses, ni les ados boutonneux sous influence des narcotiques du désert californien, ni les grandes rockstars désuètes coiffées à la gomina. Ils cohabitent, mais au profit d'autre chose, d'une cause peut-être plus noble, peut-être plus chiante. Une belle cause, ça il n'y a aucun doute.

Ces grands changements apportent leurs lots de questions sans réponse : si j'aime encore ce qu'ils font, est-ce un signe de changement ? un bon, ou un mauvais ? Mais celle qui met le plus le ravioli en ébullition, c'est celle qui consiste à se demander si j'aimerais autant les Arctic Monkeys, s'ils n'étaient pas les Arctic Monkeys. "Le sont-ils encore ?" demanderont certainement, coquins, les plus sceptiques face à cette nouvelle phase de leur carrière délicieusement pantouflarde. On pourrait considérer que la richesse d'un groupe, d'un artiste fondateur à titre personnel, est une porte d'entrée vers ses influences, ses richesses, et qu'au fond c'est comme ça qu'on découvre sa musique idéale, en suivant cet espèce de fil d'Ariane tissé par ses musiciens favoris, et qu'on détricote à l'envie. Mais quand le groupe en question se transforme, change de peau, quelle valeur conserve cet amour d'adolescent (et donc un peu trop passionné) pour quelque chose qui n'a presque plus rien à voir avec ce qui nous avait séduit au départ ? Est-ce que j'aurais eu quelque chose à cirer de The Car s'il n'avait pas été signé par Alex Turner et sa bande ? En aurais-je ne serait-ce qu'entendu parler ? L'aurais-je écouté avec la même attention ? Et surtout, l'aurais-je autant apprécié si ses géniteurs m'avaient été inconnus au bataillon ? Est-ce qu'aimer un groupe, c'est lui faire confiance quoiqu'il se passe - sans parler de la latitude de notre appréciation propre ?

D'autant plus difficile à dire aujourd'hui, quelques semaines après sa sortie et n'ayant rien écouté d'autre, toujours très sensible à la force d'attraction que leur musique continue d'exercer sur moi. Pour quelles raisons ? Là est toute la question. Un des lieux communs les plus rincés de la musique consiste à dire qu'on grandit avec celle qu'on a, un jour, aimé. Certaines études récentes affirment carrément que c'est la musique de notre adolescence qui conserve la plus grande influence sur notre cerveau. Un peu comme un surfeur marqué par sa première vague, qu'il aura vécu comme un tsunami, pour finir par chevaucher des monstres trois fois plus gros sans s'en rendre compte. Mais quelle confiance accorder quand ces premiers amours transgressent le souvenir, et deviennent tout-à-fait autre chose ?

On en revient à la question initiale, que je vais peut-être arrêter de poser ici. J'aime ce disque peut-être plus que son prédécesseur, pour ses thématiques plus en phase avec les émotions souhaitées. Pas mal de chroniques évoquent des textes particulièrement abscons, quand je les trouve (sans prétendre capter l'intégralité du sens) très justes et très poétiques. Musicalement on m'a dit que ça ressemblait à Burt Bacharach un peu trop copié (d'après une bonne amie). N'y connaissant rien ça m'a juste semblé très beau, kitsch, élégant, et difficile pour moi de détourner le regard de cette transformation - un peu comme ce vieil ami d'enfance que vous retrouvez par hasard sur Instagram, constatant à quel point sa vie est différente de la vôtre. Vous l'aimez encore ce con, c'est comme si vous connaissiez sa petite poésie interne, celle qui faisait que vous étiez amis sans jamais vous l'expliquer concrètement. La différence, c'est que vous ne le croiserez plus jamais. Mais les Arctic Monkeys, eux, semblent encore vouloir me montrer quelque chose. De différent, encore une fois, comme toujours pourrait-on dire. Une surprise qui n'en est plus une, puisque derrière ces sonorités de crooner endimanché et ces batteries dont on se serait moqué à l'époque de "Brianstorm", c'est bien d'une certaine familiarité dont il s'agit. De vieux copains qu'on recroise et à qui on a envie de ne rien refuser, qu'on parvient encore à comprendre malgré la distance. Une certaine nostalgie, enrobée dans ce qui reste (quand même, et selon mon petit avis) de la très belle musique.

Prétendre grandir avec un groupe qu’on aime, sous couvert qu’il évolue lui-même, ça peut aussi ressembler à une petite mascarade personnelle, une tentative un peu triste et désespérée de retenir une jeunesse qui s'éloigne inexorablement. TBHC AUs! I'd never written an AU fic before 'Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino' came into my life, and now I've written around 120,000 words based around that album (with a little help from Simulation Theory) 😅

If we're going for broader tropes, I'd be quite happy sticking with sci-fi/horror AUs for the rest of my life 🥰

Wordy 😅 I tend to have a lot of long, rambly sentences which are a nightmare to edit. I'm also forever trapped in the present tense, which I've come to realise is a habit that simply won't be broken (unless a handy flashback comes along)...

Social Media Research

When it came to research for my social media page, I began by looking over three articles and gathering information in regards to how I would develop my artists image, and specifically how to successfully do it on social media.

This article detailed the top 10 marketing campaigns from varying artists. It detailed that 54% of marketers believe a music video is the most valuable aspect to achieving marketing success through social media, and posting snippets or short extracts of these can help build hype and attention from audiences. It suggests that artists like Beyonce have seen success as they are titans of multiple aspects of music, both with unique sound with experimental and constantly different visuals, culminating in visual albums or lengthy videos that stand out from others. Similarly, rap artist Stormzy rose to fame through high profile interviews with the likes of Louis Theroux, gaining a large amount of attention and leading to his massively popular first album. It also discusses the punk band Creeper and their ability to create buzz through deleting their social media and reporting members as “missing”. Various clues were left on the internet, leading to the eventual release of their album.

In the second article, it details the adaptation that marketing has had to make now that we are in the age of social media, and how that shifts hoe audiences discover new artists and music, with the ever challenging task of standing out against others. It details the importance of an online persona, as it not only connects you with your fans, but can even be the way fans interact with your music, through Facebook events or Songkick, an online website that promotes live shows to a larger audience. Whilst the proliferation of the online presence continues to have positives, social media platforms can be massively overwhelming for new artists, and increasingly difficult to separate yourself from the hundreds of artists attempting to be unique every day.

Finally, the third article details the non-negotiable online presence an artist must have in order to succeed in the 2020’s. Understanding how social media works is the primary way for a large audience to be gained, how how most importantly, “attention is everything”. My primary takeaway was the importance of social media marketing on an artist, and for it to not be seen as an arbitrary aspect of a musicians career. Understanding the algorithm is another importance, posting little by little in order to build hype, and to not be lost in the masses of content. Holding our attention as audience members is crucial, and this is primarily how money is made; with people interacting with our content. Knowing your demographic and tailoring to them through short form content is another crucial aspect, as the rise in tiktok directly showcases the importance of short and sweet videos in order to grab our attention and make an artist memorable.

Arctic Monkeys Case Study:

In regards to Arctic Monkeys, their promotional posting for ‘Tranquility Base hotel and Casino’ on social media began with a small video that featured the moving hotel model that is on the cover of the vinyl. The rest of their posts consist of various simple, but still promotional, photos or videos, with the band in a photoshoot or album pictures being stand out and recieving the most attention. It mainly consists of their performance dates and promoting their live shows, but has a slight mix with merchandise advertisement.

TRANQUILITY BASE

Here’s my @coexchange piece for @that-bi-bliophile!

I hope it’s okay I stretched your prompt to fit an entire album. I listen to the album Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino by the Arctic Monkey a lot and it’s inspired countless daydreams so I figured I’d fit a Snowbaz bullet point fic into this universe. If you don’t want to listen to an entire new album (which is understandable) but want a feel for the album and the vibe I’m going for, I’d suggest listening to the songs Star Treatment, American Sports, and/or Four Stars out of Five.

For some background, in this AU Tranquility is an out of date game from an out of date console made as promotion for the real and still existing hotel on the moon. Simon lives on earth, which is currently a weird mix of waste land and advanced technology. Basically global warming isn’t fixed, all rich people just moved to the moon and left everyone else on earth to do the jobs they don’t want. Baz is the child of some of those rich moon people. They’re both like 18 when they “meet” for the first time.

Tranquility The Game is Simon’s way of escaping the reality of his shitty father and taxing job. The old gaming system is one of the few things he has that matters to him. He’s build up his own imaginary life in this digital hotel, where he’s a successful musician with a band, rich enough to afford stays in fancy moon hotels.

Baz’s dad, head of Grimm Co. is the new owner of the real TBHC. Baz goes to the hotel for a business meeting because Malcolm wants to teach him how to run the company. Baz is bored and finds an old copy of the game and console in some storage closet. He takes it home and boots it up.

He’s surprised to find it works, and even more surprised to find someone else already in the game.

Simon is confused and furious that someone else is in HIS game. He immediately shoves virtual Baz against a wall and demands he leave the game.

Baz is like “what the fuck how does anyone even still play this” but he’s intrigued by the attractive angry game boy so he insults him and keeps coming back to the game.

The relationship is hostile at first (because Simon doesn’t want Baz ruining his virtual world and Baz looks down on Simon for living on earth) but Baz, despite himself, is desperate to get to know Simon, this weird kid clinging to an out of date, boring videogame. And Simon secretly likes having someone to share this game world with, even if he “hates” him.

They get into petty fights a lot and call each other names that are supposed to be insults but are really just thinly veiled pet names. Baz’s favorites are “earthling” and “freckles boy” Simon’s are “fucking posh space boy” and “bastard”.

Baz tries to goad more information about Simon out of him but Simon is very committed to holding on to the fantasy life he’s made up for himself, he won’t even tell Baz his last name.

Despite all their “fighting” they start to warm up to each other.

One day Simon gives Baz a tour of the virtual hotel and Baz explains how different everything is in the real hotel. Throughout the tour Simon starts to open up about his father and his friend Shepard and the crumbling state of planet Earth. (Cue discussion about capitalism and class and how fucked up it is that billionaires just left the Earth and all the poor people to die.)

Baz talks about his life and how isolated he feels because his father and all his “friends” are very emotionally closed off. Simon sympathizes but teases him a little.

Simon: Like you’d rather be anything but a posh moon business man.

Baz: I would. If I could be anyone I’d be an astrologist. What about you, Earthing? Who would you be, if you could be anyone in the universe?

Simon, suddenly somber: My father says dreaming isn’t for folks people like me.

Baz shows up in the game one day to find Simon playing a guitar, he’s quite good at it.

Simon learns Baz can cook after Baz asks if there’s a way to get in to the game hotel’s kitchen (there isn’t). Simon likes Baz about ten times more when he explains how to make the perfect shepherd’s pie. Baz realized he might be in love when Simon starts explaining how good sour cherry scones are and how they should be their own food group.

They go star gazing together on the roof of the hotel. Baz knows a lot about constellations and explains them to Simon.

Baz: You know that isn’t how they look tonight?”

Simon: No?

Baz: No. it takes the light ages to get to us, so what we’re seeing is years behind. Like, look at that star there, it’s been dead for twenty years.

Simon, pointing up: There?

Baz: No, *takes Simon’s hand to readjust it* there.

Simon: Oh… yeah.

Neither of them are looking at the stars at this point. Cue gay thoughts about Simon’s freckles being constellations and some EXTREME pining.

Baz learns they can write in the notepads left in each virtual hotel room. They start leaving notes and little drawings for each other in game when they play and the other isn’t there. Sometimes Simon leaves chords to songs he’s writing. Baz will add lyrics to the songs sometimes. Baz will also flirt in the notes but Simon can never tell if he’s serious or if it’s just Baz being sarcastic and dramatic.

One day Simon’s playing guitar and invites Baz to sing with him. Baz is nervous about exposing his feelings for Simon with the romantic lyrics. Simon gets so wrapped up in listening to and watching Baz sing that he stops playing before the song is finished. They do the classic routine of staring until the other person stares back then quickly looking away and blushing. Again, Major Pining.

At this point they both think the other might be interested romantically, but they’re too nervous to take the next step into actually talking about romance.

One day Baz insists on teaching Simon to dance. They move some furniture in the hotel lounge and figure out how to use the futuristic jukebox in the corner of the room. Simon is clumsy but happy to follow Baz’s lead. (It helps that he can’t physically step on Baz’s toes. However, a few times he does bash into furniture in his real life bedroom). Baz’s hair is loose and falling in his face. Simon can’t stop smiling. Baz is still pretending like this is purely a teaching moment but he can’t hide the faint blush on his cheeks. The music shifts to a slow song. They lock eyes. Simon reaches for a phantom cheek. Baz leans into the imagined warmth of a digital palm. All they hear is their shared breathing and heartbeats until someone speaks.

Simon: If I could be anyone, I’d be someone who kissed you right now.

They can’t really kiss, it’s a videogame. But they finally admit they have feelings for each other.

They daydream about meeting somehow. Simon sneaking onto a cargo ship to travel to the moon. Inventing a way to fully convert themselves into part of the game so the never have to leave. The two of them hijacking a spaceship and enough rations to last years, then flying out somewhere in the Milky Way to live out the rest of their lives together. But they know these are just fantasies. They won’t say it out loud, and sometimes, when staring into pixelated eyes and making elaborate plots they forget the impossibility of it all, but they know they can never make these dreams reality.

Any spare time they have is spent in the digital hotel with each other. Simon starts carrying the game console around with him everywhere, even when he knows he can’t play. Baz has stopped showing up for anything he’s supposed to in the evenings, he just locks himself in his bedroom with the game.

“What would you do if I was really there?” becomes a common question.

“It’s a crisp evening here, so I’d pull you in close, keep you warm. Kiss you underneath the sliver of moon.”

“I’d hold your hand. Kiss every freckle I can find on it until I have to push up your sleeve to find more.”

“I’d mess up your hair. It looks better messy.”

“I would punch that stupid look off your face. You can’t seriously think the sun used to revolve around the Earth, that’s fucking insane!”

“I’d tell you… I- I, I never want you to leave.”

Are some of the answers.

One night they’re in the game and Simon’s struggling to stay awake. It’s adorable but Baz tells him he should go to sleep. Simon says he wants to spend more time with Baz. He asks Baz to tell him about space so he’ll stay awake. Baz knows that will put Simon to sleep rather than keep him awake, but he does it anyway. Simon fights as long as he can but falls asleep “next to” Baz within minutes. Baz realizes he’s sleeping but keeps talking about black holes while stroking the digital version of his boyfriend’s hair. And when he’s sure Simon isn’t going to wake up, Baz whispers about how much he loves him before falling asleep as well.

The next morning Simon wakes up alone in the game. Baz wakes up to the sound of his headset cracking under the weight of his skull.

Frantically he tries to turn on the console, reattach a piece of electronics that came off the headset, plead with a god he doesn’t believe in. Nothing works.

He searches for replacement pieces, a new headset, ways to convert the Tranquility game to newer systems, but there’s nothing. It’s a shitty game on an outdated console that no one cared about. He’s heartbroken.

Simon doesn’t realize anything’s wrong at first. He thinks Baz is just really busy for the first few weeks. Then he worries he did something to hurt him. Then he’s angry Baz never bothers to talk to him about why he left. Then he’s scared something happened to Baz.

For a few years he returns whenever he has the time, searches for Baz, or clues that Baz was there while he was away. But he’s never there, and there’s never any notes revealing he just missed Baz. Eventually he can’t stand to keep coming back to the deserted hotel. Whatever happened to Baz happened, deep down they both knew they couldn’t live this fantasy life in an old game forever.

Baz continues searching everywhere in real life and online for a way to get back to the game hotel, to Simon, but all he can find are parts he already has, or headsets that don’t work anymore like his.

Soon enough Simon can’t stand to even look at the gaming console. And he could use the extra money, so he decides to sell it. A local pawn shop takes it for less than Simon was hoping to get, but they said the name scratched into the side really devalues the piece.

After years of searching, Baz finds a full working console with headset for sale online, from an Earth seller. The interplanetary shipping is expensive, but worth it. When the console arrives Baz finds “SIMON SNOW” carved into the plastic exterior. He cries for days.

He boots up Tranquility The Game but he knows he’ll be the only one there. The hotel looks the same as it was the last time he played. He finds a note from Simon addressed to him, angrily asking why he left without a word, then another apologizing, saying he was just hurt but he knows things had to end at some point. Those were three years old. Simon never left anything else.

Baz decides to leave a note of his own: “Simon Snow. I wish I could tease you for carving your name into an electronic device; it’s extremely childish, and probably quite unsafe. Still, in a way I’m glad you did it. If you even found your way back here I’d hate for you to know the depth of my feelings, even after these long years. But I doubt you will. Knowing that is bittersweet. I will admit sometimes I still fantasize about you, about impossible ways we could still be friends, more than friends, anything other than ghosts haunting each other’s memories. Simon Snow, I loved you.”

Les Arctic Monkeys documentent la fin de leur dernière tournée

Grâce à la caméra de Ben Chappell, les Arctic Monkeys repartent avec un petit souvenir tourné à Mexico

Déjà un an que les Arctic Monkeys sortaient le luxueux et intimiste Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino, un album presque dénué de guitares, qui avait réussi l’exploit de prendre tout le monde à contrepied sans pour autant refroidir les fans. Un tour de force, un de nos disques de l’année passée auquel le groupe rend hommage avec une petite vidéo retraçant un des derniers concerts de la tournée, organisé le 24 mars dernier à Mexico au Foro Sol Stadium.

Une vidéo signée Ben Chappell, déjà auteur du mini-documentaire Warp Ship Chic qui revenait avec pudeur sur l’enregistrement de l’album, notamment à Paris. Même principe pour cette vidéo, qui capte des moments éparses sans jamais commenter ou interpréter les images via une quelconque voix off. On y découvre Alex Turner en pleine répétition, des extraits du concert, des balades en voiture, une tortue (?), le tout filmé à l’aide d’une caméra analogique conférant un grain très particulier à l’image.

Albums du mois (Mai 2018)

Parce que j’adore lancer un concept avec plusieurs jours de retard, voici les albums que j’ai apprécié durant un mois. Un moyen pour moi de me remettre à l’écriture de critique et à m’encourager à écouter plus de musique qui sort.

Mark Kozelek - Mark Kozelek Un magnifique album de la part du meneur de Sun Kil Moon et Red House Painters. Suivant le concept du “chanter-parler” qu’il a perfectionné dans l’album “Common as Light and Love are Red Valleys of Blood”, Mark raconte (comme toujours) sa vie sous forme de différentes chanson, chaque chanson parlant de petits détails dans sa vie. À l’exception d’un seul morceau où il est accompagné à la batterie, tout l’album est entièrement joué par Mark à la guitare, de la même manière qu’il a enregistré l’album “Admiral Fell Promises”), et les ambiances qu’il crée avec seulement une guitare sont envoûtantes et parfois oniriques. Des morceaux comme “My Love for you is Undying” ou “The Mark Kozelek Museum” sont basés sur un seul riff de guitare qui s’amplifie progressivement, et le minimalisme est réussi. Mais en général, toutes les chansons ont une ambiance incroyablement reposante, grâce à l’overdubbing mélangé avec la voix de Kozelek, qui peut plaire ou déplaire. Je trouve que sa voix, rendue grave après plus de 25 ans de carrière, correspond parfaitement au personnage qu’il est devenu: un cinquantenaire bourru, parfois dépassé par le présent, qui se concentre sur ses souvenirs: les soirées qu’il passe avec sa femme ou son fils, les films préférés de ce dernier, ses différents animaux de compagnie, les fois où il danse tout en jardinant avec son coupe-herbe, etc. Mais rien ne l’empêche d’avoir des traits d’humour: il peut se vanter du fait qu’il est écouté sur Spotify, qu’il possède presque le modèle d’une guitare d’une de ses idoles, du moment de “My Love for you is Undying” où il essaie de trouver des rimes en “ing” vers la fin de la chanson, et la chanson “The Banjo Song” qui en fait est jouée avec une guitare en corde de nylon de la marque YAAAAAAAAAAMAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. Mark est conscient de la réputation d’artiste folk cinquantenaire C’est pour cela qu’on a droit à un album de Mark Kozelek au lieu de Sun Kil Moon. Les paroles intimistes, mêlées au minimalisme sonore forment l’aspect unique de cet album par rapport à d’autres projets de Mark Kozelek (à savoir aussi qu’il a été enregistré dans une chambre d’hôtel). Ah, et le passage de “The Mark Kozelek Museum” où il parle des festivals de musique et des toilettes portables qui empestent la diarrhée ? C’est très vrai. Et le passage où il répète en mantra le mot “diarrhée”, tandis que des choeurs triomphants résonnent en écho ? Magnifique. 8/10

Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino Changement notable pour Alex Turner et sa bande! Après l’album AM qui avait plu à un nouveau public et déplu à l’ancien public, les Arctic Monkeys lachent le Garage Rock et le psychédélique pour le Lounge et les synthés afin de créer une ambiance spatiale. Cela est aussi aidé par les paroles qui sont très influencées par la science-fiction sur des chansons comme American Sports et Star Treatment. On est loin du précédent album du groupe qui se basait sur la thématique Sex, Drugs & Rock’n Roll, TBH+C parle aussi de politique, de consumérisme, voire même d’introspection (la chanson Four Stars out of Five qui pourrait faire référence au virage commercial que le groupe a pris pour AM). Cette variété de thèmes bien géré est complémentée par la voix extrêmement charismatique d’Alex Turner qui opte pour un style de chant particulier: accentuer la dernière syllabe de chaque mot lorsqu’il fait du “chanter-parler”, lui donnant un air de narrateur sombre sur le morceau American Sports. Mais sur la chanson portant le nom de l’album, Alex atteint son registre vocal le plus aigu. Sur l’ensemble de l’album, il assure une performance vocale nettement supérieure à ce qu’il a fait précédemment, même au sein des Last Shadow Puppets. D’ailleurs, Four Stars out of Five est facilement le climax de l’album où Alex se défoule tandis qu’il est accompagné de choeurs ainsi que d’un superbe Mellotron. La rythmique de The World’s First Ever Monster Truck Flip me rappelle l’âge d’or des Beach Boys et The Ultracheese termine l’album sur une note personnelle et semblable aux ballades que faisait Elton John (et en plus, c’es toujours un plaisir d’entendre Alex prononcer “Ultracheese”). Je pourrais me plaindre qu’encore une fois, c’est un album des Arctic Monkeys qui ressemble plus à un projet d’Alex Turner qui est accompagné d’un backing band, mais j’ai jamais autant apprécié un album du groupe lorsqu’il sortait Your Favourite Worst Nightmare en 2007. 8/10

Hyphen Hyphen - HH Le groupe niçois se présentait auparavant comme un groupe pop-rock, mais les choses ont drastiquement changés avec ce deuxième album. Commençant avec le sombre et puissant Take My Hand, Hyphen Hyphen sont passé à une approche plus industrielle de l’electropop. À l’exception de la ballade The Way To Stay qui laisse entendre un peu de guitare, tout l’album est clairement electro et lâche le piano qui était beaucoup plus présent dans leur précédent album. Qui dit industriel, dit aussi agressif, et la chanson Like Boys donne le ton. Cette chanson affirme son message anti-mecs pervers/lourds et contre les relations toxiques, mais en tenant compte de la composition du groupe, cette chanson a aussi un magnifique message sur l’hétéronome. Et c’est en prenant compte cette chanson que l’album devient formidable lorsqu’il est entendu dans un angle saphique. Pas que saphique, il est aussi féministe sur des morceaux comme Young Leaders (et son passage “You are my girl crush” qui n’a pas besoin d’être expliqué, tout comme le morceau Kiss You qui a des superbes arpèges de piano). Les excentricités vocales de Santa fusent, les rythmiques frappent fort et bien et les refrains sont d’un entraînant remarquable, la dernière minute de Higher étant un dernier moment de gloire pour l’album. 7/10

Pusha T - DAYTONA J’attendais peu cet album (malgré mon appréciation pour Pusha et son talent de voler la vedette quand il fait office de featuring pour d’autres artistes, en plus d’avoir des ad-libs de génie), et la demi-teinte se ressent. Mené par une production plus ou moins bonne de Kanye West (ainsi qu’un couplet sur le morceau What Would Meek Do ? où il se plaint encore qu’on se plaigne de ce qu’il pense), Pusha aborde ses thèmes de prédilection: son passé de dealer, la cocaïne et les faux dans le milieu du rap; tous condensés dans un album de 21 minutes. If you know you know ouvre l’album avec classe, mais il n’y a pas cette constance de qualité sur les autres morceaux. Une chanson qui se démarque du lot est le personnel Santeria où Pusha aborde la mort de son manager DeVon et fait un remarquable hommage, en plus du featuring de 070 Shake (que je n’aime pas mais je peux m’empêcher de le réecouter donc il doit y avoir une appréciation quelque part). Et même si J’ADORE le passage How can you right these wrongs / When you don’t even write your songs ? du morceau Infrared, je me fiche royalement de la chamaillerie entre lui et Drake. 6/10

Moha La Squale - Bendero Premier album très générique, paroles pas intéressantes étant donné que ça se base sur un concept digne des années 90 (sans le story-telling digne de cette époque), et c’est pas en criant les paroles en arrière-plan qu’on rend le texte plus intéressant, ça le rend juste davantage redondant. J’apprécie néanmoins l’ambition de faire un album de 24 morceaux sans aucun featuring, mais la durée d’une heure est aberrante et fait passer une seconde écoute pour une corvée. 2/10
