Looking for an indoor-outdoor green friend? The Ice Plant (Carpobrotus edulis) may be the next houseplant to add to your wish list, but take care in keeping it contained to your home and garden.

Ice Plants make attractive angular succulent leaves and have trailing growth along with shimmery yellow or pale pink flowers in spring. The succulent leaves have a “glittery” appearance due to their texture. As potted plants, they need plenty of sun and can be kept outside in the UK unless there is frost. They are frost tender and must be protected or moved inside in winter.

Native to South Africa, the Ice Plant has evolved to thrive in coastal environments with salty spray, steep cliffs, and nutrient-poor sandy soil. Ice Plants can easily outcompete native coastal plant species and become invasive in places like California, USA, the Mediterranean, Australian coasts, and Cornwall, UK. When Ice Plants take over an area, they make the soil more acidic - which is favourable to Ice Plants while making it more difficult for other plants to grow.

How did this frost tender plant become invasive in the UK though? Ice Plants have taken over specific areas of Cornwall, where the cliff and dune environments rarely have frost due to the warm Gulf Stream ocean current. They are escapees from gardens where Ice Plants are used as ground cover, and in the mid 20th century it was introduced to slow dune erosion. Some areas, like the scenic Lizard Point in Cornwall, are carpeted in Ice Plants and many visitors assume they are a native species. Although the climate is not warm enough for their fruits to ripen, the plant spreads prodigiously via fragmentation (new plants growing from broken off pieces). Therefore, there is probably low genetic diversity among the Ice Plant populations in Cornwall, which may make them more vulnerable to pests and diseases in the long run.

The Ice Plant can be a “nice plant” as long as you keep it strictly in captivity!

Stonecrop ? (Sedum species) this is a really tiny variety of sedum or “Stonecrop” but I’m not sure exactly which one. Sedum plants of this type come from Europe and are quite hardy and cold tolerant. Very easy to propagate they like a bit of sun and if in the shade they will grow towards sunshine. Fuchsia procumbens (Trailing Fuchsia or Totara) #oneadayplant . New Zealand has a handful of native Fuchsia species, with almost all other native to South America. Among the NZ species are the world’s tallest species F. excorticata, which grows to become a tree in time and the world’s shortest species F. procumbens. . Also of note in this species, which has long been a favourite of mine is that it is the only species in the world to produce upright facing flowers. Don’t let the pic fool you. They are tiny! Only 1cm or so long. Beautiful though with green, maroon-purple, yellow red and perhaps most impressively the iridescent blue pollen. . While it will climb, it really sprawls better than anything else, rooting into the ground as it grows. . Not amazingly hardy, it will survive year on year in sheltered spots. Seems to do better in dry shade for me, though the dry bit is only really important in the winter. I’ve grown it underneath work benches in greenhouses, which it loves. Very easy to grow and can be propagated from cuttings, layering or seed from the amazing red seed pods it produces that remind me of Strawberry Grapes that the Italians call Uva Fragola. . I can’t tell you how much I love this plant. If you know how much I love NZ plants in general then you will have some appreciation of my love for it. Possibly my favourite bit of exotic groundcover. By which I mean, not fully or reliably UK hardy groundcover . I will post more pics of the seed pods at a later date. For now, enjoy this gorgeous, tiny flower. The annual Lobelia erinus (trailing lobelia) is a traditional summer bedding plant and is often seen in hanging baskets. Here it looks wonderful cascading from this container in a semi shaded courtyard. There is a Petunia in the centre of the display.
