We were out at Raymond Terrace Veterinary Clinic today to have some puppies immunised. This “Grevillea Peaches and Cream” was in flower at Heatherbrae's Pies and looked very pretty. Grevillea banksii, crossed with Grevillea bipinnatifida. Some of the other yellow Grevilleas have been cut down. I presume they died of old age. There are over 350 species which are endemic to Australia and they provide lots of nectar for many native species #Grevillea #GrevilleaPeachesAndCream #GrevilleaBipinnatifida #GrevilleaBanksii #Tree #abcmygarden #HeatherbraesPies (at Heatherbrae Pies Hexham) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cr0GOyuvGla/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Still in flower well in to Autumn is the Angels Trumpet or Mexican viper (maurandya barclayana). It’s native to Mexico. The plant seeds easily so you need to keep an eye on it as it has become a pest in some areas. Easily grown from seed and also easy to transplant when young. #AngelsTrumpet #MexicanViper #flower #MaurandyaBarclayana #vine #abcmygarden #myplants #purple #violet #mexico #climber #perennial #longflowering #butterflyplant #butterfly (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Crxi1hvPh9Z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Gold and Silver Chrysanthemum is just coming into flower and the ants are having fun farming the afids (Ajania pacifica Chrysanthemum pacificum) native to Japan and is endemic to the island of Honshū. Its natural habitat is along the Pacific coast on ocean cliffs. It looks quite good when it’s just green and silver foliage but in autumn the plant is covered in golden yellow button-like flowers, which are really pretty. Happy in direct sun or even fair amounts of shade, they will usually be better in more light than less. I’ve been growing this in the same spot for about 20 years but the protea (Leucospermum fulgens) has started to shade it out so it may need a new spot. Propagate by division or cutting. This I would rate as an easy grow, low care plant. #flower #chrysanthemum #japan #ajaniapacifica #chrysanthemumpacificum #abcmygarden #goldandsilverchrysanthemum #easycare #waterwise #bushy #silver #green #gold #buttonflower (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cru8Dr3P3bR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Some cooler weather and the Red Geranium - Pelargonium is looking pretty (Pelargonium) These are all ready to be cut back and propagated again soon. Pelargoniums are evergreen perennials from warm temperate and tropical regions of the world, many species in southern Africa. They flower for a long period and intensive breeding has produced a huge number of cultivars with great variety in size, flower colour, leaf form and aromatic foliage. You can be grow them from seed but to keep the colour you want you should propagate by cuttings or layering. #flower #pelargonium #geranium #africa #abcmygarden #red #sunloving #ornamental #longflowering (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CrsUaIpvQTn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Really happy with the Frangipanis this year, we still have some flowers (Plumeria rubra). They are lovely and green with almost no frangipani rust as yet. They come from Mexico, Central America, Colombia and Venezuela. Often by this time they are being attacked by Frangipani Rust (Coleosporium Pluymeriae) but this year we have been lucky, possibly because it’s been a little drier and cooler. To propagate them plant the cuttings into slightly damp sandy soil after letting the stems dry to form a callus. #flowers #abcmygarden #plumeria #frangipani #green #colourful #tree #plumeriarubra (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Crp0KSNv2s7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ready for an Autumn cut back is the Cigar plant, cigar flower, firecracker plant, or Mexican cigar (cuphea ignea) native to the West Indies and Mexico. Ours has been flowering continuously since last winter and shows no signs of slowing down. I got this as a cutting a few years ago. It strikes really easily in water or damp soil. Always pretty and quite hardy. I’m just about to cut it back again or we won’t be able to walk down our front footpath. #mexicancigar #cigarplant #firecrackerplant #cupheaignea #flower #mexico #westindies #abcmygarden #longflowering #repeatflowering #perennial #bush #easygrow #red #cutting #cigarflower (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CrnOdOzvNki/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Egyptian Starcluster has enjoyed growing in the shade but is now very tall (Pentas Lanceolata), native to much of Africa. It’s a perennial in my garden but colder areas it would be an annual. I just got a new colour and have struck the cutting in water 😁. I’ll be cutting it back soon and will and propagate the cuttings for friends and family. #PentasLanceolata #EgyptianStarcluster #africa #africanplant #abcmygarden #red #perennial #butterfly #butterflyplant (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Crko3nlvZ67/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I’m posting again because Mum’s Orchids are fully out. So pretty. Crimson Cattleya or Ruby-lipped Cattleya (cattleya labiata cultivar) originally from Brazil and Venezuela. It’s an easy to grow, Cattleya that, as you can see has lavish displays of flowers. This was Mum’s orchid and I will divide it again this year. I’m sure son and daughter will like a copy of Gran’s orchid. There are fancier varieties but this was Mum’s so it’s special to me. #flower #cattleya #orchid #crimsoncattleya #cattleyalabiata #brazil #abcmygarden #violet #ornamental #venezuela #epiphyte #green (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CriCn4HPPPP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Should have posted this Rosemary yesterday for ANZAC Day. (Salvia rosmarinus previously Rosmarinus officinalis) originally from the Mediterranean area, it’s been in use for over 5000 years. Anzac Day was devised to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who served in the Gallipoli campaign which was their first engagement, in the First World War (1914–1918). Since this is now well over 100 years in the past ANZAC Day has been embraced as a historic commemoration of all service to Australia and New Zealand. Rosemary is associated with remembrance because it’s easy to propagate. #Rosemary #SalviaRosmarinus #herb #fragrant #bush #foliage #abcmygarden #purple #green #perennial #hardy #easygrow #strewing #edible #medicinal (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Crfd-grPZvW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Allamanda or bush allamanda (Allamanda schottii) is native to parts of Brazil. This one has been in the garden since at least 1995 and needs almost no care. I usually cut it back quite hard but have let it grow a bit this year. It’s still flowering into autumn and is looking very lush. It has interesting seed pods but I’ve not seen it sprout seedlings. #flower #flowers #seedpod #abcmygarden #yellow #allamanda #AllamandaSchottii #BushAllamanda #brazil (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Crc5_S7PuGd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Now really coming into flower all over the garden is the Waxvine (hoya australis), lots of flowers this year. It’s from Western Australia, through the Northern Territory and coastal Queensland from Cape York to northern New South Wales. It’s quite easy to grow and propagate by cutting or layering. When not in a small pot it grows quite large and climbs everywhere. #Waxvine #flower #HoyaAustralis #Hoya #australia #australiannative #hangingbasket #abcmygarden #green #potplant #repeatflowering #cutting #easygrow # (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CraVCzSvYjM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

My wife and I went to Stroud Agricultural show (Fair) this weekend. Stroud is a town of just under 1000 people that is 74 km (46 mi) north of Newcastle, NSW. There was a Ute Muster (Pick up truck beauty contest). Show jumping and other horse events. Chainsaw competitions. The dog show that we went to and a pavilion of local exhibits including from the local school. Wonderful day with a friendly country atmosphere. #UteMuster #ShowJumping #Campdrafting #chainsaw #ChainsawRace #DogShow (at Stroud, New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/CrXy9vLvTS-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Frog Foot Coleus (coleus scutellarioides) (also sometimes called plectranthus or solenostemon scutellarioides) known as painted nettle. Coleus are native to southeast Asia through to Australia. There are MANY cultivars of coleus and they are a popular bedding plant as well as pot plant. It’s possible to grow them from seed but if you want to know what you’re getting it’s better to take a cutting. They strike quite readily in water or in a damp sandy mix. Our plants have become leggy over summer so they’ll be getting pruned soon. #foliage #coleus #coleusscutellarioides #frogfoot #asia #abcmygarden #potplant #multicolour #hardy #waterwise #paintedneettle (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CrVLX9zPQNm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Autumn flowers and amazing fragrance from the Sweet Osmanthus (osmanthus fragrans) also sweet olive, tea olive, and fragrant olive, is a species native to Asia from the Himalayas through South China to Taiwan, southern Japan and Southeast Asia as far south as Cambodia and Thailand. In China and Japan it is the "city flower" of several cities. Fantastic flower that smells like Apricot Delight. The flowers can be added to tea to make a fragrant blend. Tough tree, this one is growing under a Frangipani between two Murrayas and really only gets rain water. Highly recommended with it’s green leaves and it’s beautiful flowers. #perfume #osmanthus #osmanthusfragrans #sweetosmanthus #flower #flowers #tea #chinese #homegrown #abcmygarden #asian #sweetolive (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CrP-mvnPQlm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sterile (non invasive) red and yellow Flower Lantana “West Indian Lantana” (Lantana Camara hybrid) native to tropical regions of the Americas and Africa found all over the world and it’s common form is a bad pest in many areas. Almost always in flower except after I cut it back. This red and yellow form seems to be completely sterile. The plant is quite old but I keep it cut back each year by cutting it back it promotes flowering and a nice compact bush. I would not intentionally propagate or buy it because of it’s bad reputation as a weed. #flower #lantana #mygarden #LantanaCamara #WestIndianLantana #red #Yellow #Tough #WaterWise #abcmygarden #butterfly #butterflyplant (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CrNbg35vj3f/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A few autumn flowers from the Native or Ivy Leaf Violet (Viola Hederacea) This was given to me by my daughter and labeled Native Violet (it’s either Viola hederacea or Viola banksii), commonly known as native violet or ivy leaf violet, it’s sold and grown throughout Australia, especially in the east. It’s native to the east coast. #NativeViolet #ViolaHederacea #ViolaBanksii #groundcover #shade #abcmygarden #myplants #australiangarden #ausnative #ausraliannative #flower #violet #AustralianViolet (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CrK7hFdPZsR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
