Really happy with the Frangipanis this year, we still have some flowers (Plumeria rubra). They are lovely and green with almost no frangipani rust as yet. They come from Mexico, Central America, Colombia and Venezuela. Often by this time they are being attacked by Frangipani Rust (Coleosporium Pluymeriae) but this year we have been lucky, possibly because it’s been a little drier and cooler. To propagate them plant the cuttings into slightly damp sandy soil after letting the stems dry to form a callus. #flowers #abcmygarden #plumeria #frangipani #green #colourful #tree #plumeriarubra (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Crp0KSNv2s7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

All the Frangipani are lovely and green with little sign of rust (Plumeria rubra) originally native to Mexico, Central America, Colombia and Venezuela. All the Frangipani are looking really good this year. No sign of rust but ours are flowering a little later than others because we have more shade. Easy to transplant or propagate them when dormant or plant the cuttings into slightly damp sandy soil after letting the stems dry to form a callus. #frangipani #flower #abcmygarden #plumeria #green #PlumeriaRubra #tree #red #colourful #Tropical (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpHdcwovFvo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Still in flower is the Angels Trumpet or Mexican viper (maurandya barclayana). It’s native to Mexico. The plant seeds easily so you need to keep an eye on it as it has become a pest in some areas. Easily grown from seed and also easy to transplant when young. #AngelsTrumpet #MexicanViper #flower #MaurandyaBarclayana #vine #abcmygarden #myplants #purple #violet #mexico #climber #perennial #longflowering #butterflyplant #butterfly (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqHuWfXP_2v/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Now in flower and ready for a cut back is this lovely big Coleus (coleus scutellarioides) (also sometimes called plectranthus or solenostemon scutellarioides) also known as painted nettle. Coleus are native to southeast Asia through to Australia. This is a cutting I picked up over a year ago. It’s already grown out of the bottom of its pot! It’s possible to grow them from seed but if you want to know what you’re getting it’s better to take a cutting. They strike quite readily in water or in a damp sandy mix. #foliage #coleus #ColeusScutellarioides #asia #potplant #abcmygarden #outdoor #multicolour #hardy #waterwise #PaintedNettle (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqCpiBkvOH8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Wax Flower or Hoya is either fragrant or produces heaps of nectar (Hoya carnosa) native to Eastern Asia and Australia. Our inside hydroponic hoya has flowers that are covered with sweet nectar this week without the strong perfume. They usually flower from the end of the same spike but can also make new shoots and flower spikes. Really easy to propagate, layering or cuttings. It grows in the ground, in pots and hydroponically. #hoya #waxflower #waxplant #PorcelainFlower #HoyaCarnosa #abcmygarden #flower #ausnative #AustralianNative #AustralianHoya #native #nectar (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpE1nV1vxFn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Gold and Silver Chrysanthemum is just coming into flower and the ants are having fun farming the afids (Ajania pacifica Chrysanthemum pacificum) native to Japan and is endemic to the island of Honshū. Its natural habitat is along the Pacific coast on ocean cliffs. It looks quite good when it’s just green and silver foliage but in autumn the plant is covered in golden yellow button-like flowers, which are really pretty. Happy in direct sun or even fair amounts of shade, they will usually be better in more light than less. I’ve been growing this in the same spot for about 20 years but the protea (Leucospermum fulgens) has started to shade it out so it may need a new spot. Propagate by division or cutting. This I would rate as an easy grow, low care plant. #flower #chrysanthemum #japan #ajaniapacifica #chrysanthemumpacificum #abcmygarden #goldandsilverchrysanthemum #easycare #waterwise #bushy #silver #green #gold #buttonflower (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cru8Dr3P3bR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Some cooler weather and the Red Geranium - Pelargonium is looking pretty (Pelargonium) These are all ready to be cut back and propagated again soon. Pelargoniums are evergreen perennials from warm temperate and tropical regions of the world, many species in southern Africa. They flower for a long period and intensive breeding has produced a huge number of cultivars with great variety in size, flower colour, leaf form and aromatic foliage. You can be grow them from seed but to keep the colour you want you should propagate by cuttings or layering. #flower #pelargonium #geranium #africa #abcmygarden #red #sunloving #ornamental #longflowering (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CrsUaIpvQTn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I’m posting again because Mum’s Orchids are fully out. So pretty. Crimson Cattleya or Ruby-lipped Cattleya (cattleya labiata cultivar) originally from Brazil and Venezuela. It’s an easy to grow, Cattleya that, as you can see has lavish displays of flowers. This was Mum’s orchid and I will divide it again this year. I’m sure son and daughter will like a copy of Gran’s orchid. There are fancier varieties but this was Mum’s so it’s special to me. #flower #cattleya #orchid #crimsoncattleya #cattleyalabiata #brazil #abcmygarden #violet #ornamental #venezuela #epiphyte #green (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CriCn4HPPPP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Allamanda or bush allamanda (Allamanda schottii) is native to parts of Brazil. This one has been in the garden since at least 1995 and needs almost no care. I usually cut it back quite hard but have let it grow a bit this year. It’s still flowering into autumn and is looking very lush. It has interesting seed pods but I’ve not seen it sprout seedlings. #flower #flowers #seedpod #abcmygarden #yellow #allamanda #AllamandaSchottii #BushAllamanda #brazil (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Crc5_S7PuGd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s an easy to grow, medium size Cattleya that is known for its lavish displays of flowers. This is an orchid I inherited from my Mum and it’s probably ready to divide again. Here you can see a forty year old grandma plant, its 20 year old daughter and a new variegated shoot that has been successfully struck that is growing new shoots. Still flowering well is the Strong Orange “Fearless” hybrid tea rose (Rosa hybrid) hybrid tea is one of the oldest rose cultivars. Swane’s is a very famous Australian rose growing nursery and family company. This one was given to me by our son in law so I could grow nice roses for his mother in law 😁. It’s doing well in a container with a little bit of shade. Should be able to prune it back soon and I might try striking some cuttings. #Rosa #HybridTeaRose #rose #Rosaceae #Flower #Perennial #abcmygarden #bush #orange #fearless #swanes (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpUS4EfvXri/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Orange Crucafix Orchid (epidendrum radicans) seems to be always in flower and adding colour to the garden. Likes to grow in with other plants to support it but will also tough it out in a pot in full sun. These have been in continuous flower for well over a year now and have also set seedpods! The seeds are as fine as dust. The plant forms “offsets” (complete new plants) and once four or more roots have formed, the offset can be snapped off, potted up, and grown on without really affecting its growth. It’s from the middle elevations in Central America. Common names also include ground-rooting epidendrum, fire-star orchid, rainbow orchid, and reed-stem epidendrum. #orchid #CrucifixOrchid #EpidendrumRadicans #RainbowOrchid #CentralAmerica #abcmygarden #flower #SouthAmerican #hardy #LongFlowering (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Col9Bj7vv9t/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
