I hate how yall swifties take legitimate criticism of her as like "misogynistic hate". Also blaming her management company when her dad was a shareholder at said company before she was signed ... she honestly had a lot more say than she admits. But that doesn't fit her victim complex so 🤷🏼‍♀️

I mean I didn't even talk about this but okay 😂 Going from your point about her dad being a shareholder at the management company - to me, he counts as one of the people who have been behind the scenes trying to (and succeeding in, because she was young at the time) control her image and mold it to what he and others thought was Good, and to not offend his community (which, just from having watched her documentary, seems conservative, and shows his opinion diverges from hers when it comes to actions to take politically, for example).

I'm not gonna defend every single thing she does, I'm disappointed and tired about some/a lot of things, I just can't stand pure hate that's aggressive and spreads lies to justify the hate somehow.

When you have someone who hasn't done anything hateful like so many have but still gets hate like that each time she releases anything, it's goddamn tiring.

And I wouldn't say what she gets now is necessarily misoginistic hate, at least it's not the hate I see. Years ago, yeah, when she was slut shamed and mocked constantly for how she dressed/talked/danced, yeah.

Anyway, I don't stand by everything she does. But I'm sick of people hating on her and casually throwing "We should just k*Il her" and comments like that in random posts about them not liking her. There are people I don't like either, fuck, a lot of people, lol. I don't go around happily spreading shit like that, though. That's what always boggles my mind about the hate she gets. She's not freaking Jeff Bezos, or Tr*mp, ffs. But no matter what she does or says, it's gonna be there. I have nothing against valid criticism, I have a thing against the escalation to talking about her like she's pure evil. It disgusts me more than her mistakes, yeah. Incessantly going after someone and digging for anything to excuse aggressive insults is sickening.

Also, note: not all Taylor fans are the same person. We're not all hardcore defending her when she's wrong. A lot of her fans are very willing to discuss things she does or doesn't do that let us down/arent okay. It's not all black or white.

Biography

Roya Kazemi

Roya was born on the road. Both of her parents were professional scammers, spending their lives travelling. They made their own rules, living outside of the law and never remaining in one place long enough to get caught. Their specialty was small towns, the kind of places the Emperor and those who serve him cared so little for that they didn’t even bother investigating their crimes. Their only child, Roya, was born on the backseat of their car, pulled over on the side of the road. They were back on their way within the hour, heading towards their next target. 

For as long as she can remember, Roya has been adored. Her parents showered her with praise, constantly telling her how pretty she was, how clever she was, and granted her every request. Despite spending most of her childhood on the road, she never wanted for anything, and knew everything she owned was stolen. Her parents passed their trade on to her, positioning it like a game, and the thrill of taking what was not hers is a feeling as familiar as an old friend to Roya. 

As she grew under her parents tutelage, Roya grew greedy and entitled. She believed that if she could get away with taking something, she deserved to have it. However, petty theft and small-scale operations ceased to satisfy her like they used to. By the time she was in her late teens, newly an adult and unfamiliar with any other life but the one her family had shown her, she was already looking to something bigger and better. The only trouble was, building something bigger was hard to do when you had to start from scratch every few weeks. Just before her twentieth birthday, Roya bid goodbye to her parents, and set off for the first time on her own.

Mystic Roya

Her first few months in the city weren’t easy. She had never even seen an attempt at putting roots down, and had no clue how to do it for herself. That changed when her mark appeared. Every resourceful, Roya had always had a lucky streak. With her mark, her life-long bout of good fortune made all the more sense. Suddenly, the path ahead was clear. 

It was the biggest con of her life, setting up as “genuine” psychic. She assumed there would be a learning curve, a certain art to reading people that she would learn over time. For the most part, people were far less complicated than they liked to believe themselves to be. All it took was a few vague statements from Roya, blanket “predicitions” that could have applied to anybody. It wouldn’t have been enough on it’s own, but when combined with her talismans, created with her powers and sold to desperate believers, it was hard to deny the power of Mystic Roya. When she promised good luck, she delivered. When she promised love, it was found. She laughs about it behind closed doors, delighting in the games she plays with those who reach out to her for spiritual guidance, but at least she’s laughing all the way to the bank.

Casino Kaz

She loves what she does- really, she does, but Roya has never been very good at the monotonous life. Being in one place for so long is stifling enough, without succumbing to something as mundane as regularity. Roya was naturally restless to begin with, but the storm in which she grew up in only exaggerated this trait. The psychic fraud was fun, and she has no intention of giving it up, but the need for something more developed. Having spent her life chasing thrills, she’s never done well when the thrills disappear. 

Having done so well with her first cultivated persona, it made sense to add another deception to her bow. Mystic Roya was one aspect of who she was, not-quite her, but with enough of her in it to come naturally. The second side of the coin was easier still to slip into. Kaz. Unlike Mystic Roya, there was nothing spiritual about Kaz. They gambled, and cheated, and conned and lied, and loved every minute of it. 

The thrill has always faded quickly, but for Kaz, every day is different, every game is different. It’s enough to keep the excitement alive, and something about her double life keeps her even more exhilarated. Though she still chases excitement where she finds it, for the most part, she’s totally content, happy amassing her fortune and revelling in her success. 

Headcanons

Her mark, the Grifter Cricket, appeared on her lower back, to the left of her tailbone (think a typical tr*mp stamp). She doesn’t know how long it sat there before she noticed it. For her, the transition from human to Night Monster was slow and seamless, reflecting the more subtle nature of her powers. It would be very easy for Kaz to lay low, but her own ego forbids it. She’s always been the flashy type, and never one for laying low when she could be taking center stage. A reckless risk-taker, she never fully thinks of the consequences of her actions. She has luck on her side, though, and for her, that’s all the protection she needs. 

Like most things in her life, Kaz doesn’t take her status as a Night Monster too seriously. She knows the danger, but she simply doesn’t believe anything could happen to her. She knows that everything she has is a direct result of her powers, and isn’t shy about using them to get herself out of almost any situation. Though she doesn’t necessarily shout about her abilities (she’s dumb but she’s not stupid), she enjoys using them and is fairly proud of what she is, even if she can’t express that in the ways she wants to. 

Kaz had a good relationship with both of her parents, but never really stayed in one place long enough growing up to form bonds with anybody out of the family unit of three. Though she was loved, being an only child with no opportunity for friends was a lonely experience for a little girl. She more than makes up for it now, though. Kaz loves making friends, but isn’t the best at keeping them. She’s very much the type of person you’d have a blast with on the odd night out, but keeping up with her over long periods of time can be quite tiresome. For those who can, however, she’s quick to embrace them as found family and accept them as one of her own. 

Kaz has a taste for fine things, and wants nothing less than to surround herself with the best of everything. With the money she has gained, she bought a fancy apartment in the heart of the city. It’s not quite Empire Gardens, but the pace of life there suits her better, anyway. Though she paid for the apartment, she didn’t purchase anything in it. It came fully furnished, anyway, courtesy of the previous owner, and all of Kaz’s own additions have been stolen or swindled. 

Kaz is loyal to the Madhouse Renegades, but only because they best serve her interests. She doesn’t really care very much at all about their mission, nor the plight of the other Night Monsters. Her main concern is what is going on in the here and now, how it effects her, and ensuring her own prosperity. As a result of never settling anywhere any longer than two weeks, she doesn’t really realise the extent of the emperor’s tyranny, nor why what she’s doing matters. It’s all a bit of a game to her, and while she loves the thrill of it, she could easily switch sides if she saw enough benefit in it. She’s pledged her loyalty, but her actual commitment is flaky. 

Despite her success in amassing a small fortune, Kaz is terrible at math. Numbers and data are too objective, and hold very little interest for her, doing little but making her head hurt. She can’t tell you exactly how much she is worth- only that she wants more, and there’s no job too small to be below her consideration.

well THAT was embarrassing!!!! i'm a little / a lot sad right now because i feel like i had so much more to give to this game, so much i could've done if i had survived literally 10 more minutes - but that's the way the cookie crumbles! rooting so hard for mj and nobody else (that's a lie i also need to see my bbs zoe and jonathan fuck it upppp), and i'm glad i played even though i got did this dirty @ just missing merge and jury. anyway, peace out and see you on the other side of the moon <3

Nathan is getting REALLLLLLLYYY cocky and it's gonna come back to bite him in the ass. He's expecting Jonathan will work with him after constantly lying to him and it's so exhausting to try and deal with him. Nathan came up with a plan to all swap our moons when we tell people, and that's fine, I like that idea. But I told him that I already told Jonathan my moons so you're gonna have to figure something else to tell him, and what does he do but tell him one of Zach's moons. And let's be real here, if Jonathan asks Zach for his moons, and Zach is honest with him, who's Jonathan gonna believe? The person who has literally no reason to lie to him, or the person who's screwed him over like 3 times in the last day? At this point I'm just gonna try to make sure when the world turns on Nathan, that I'm either in on it or not a victim of it. Cause it's gonna happen whether he sees it coming or not.

First off: LMAO GET FUCKED TR*MP HAHAHAHA GOOD FUCKING RIDDANCE!!!! And now back to Survivor :) Whew last night was EVENTFUL! So the fucking moon challenge at first to me seemed kinda irrelevant, if someone lied it's fine it's a challenge. But after it was all over, I spoke strategically with MJ for the first time this game and damn did he have some grievances to air. He told me all about how Jonathan screwed everyone over in this challenge and if he's willing to do it for immunity, then he's not gonna be trustworthy later down the line. And it's wild to me because clearly Jonathan has enough connections to get him the win even if he didn't burn everyone. But now there's really no coming back for him. But back to my conversation with MJ. We agreed to work closely together to get to the end and I'm all for it. Well, idk if I really want MJ at f3, but I'm willing to act like I want to until like, f5 or something. So we have this long discussion and I bring up using Nathan as a shield for us, and MJ seems to like the idea. So after I get off call with MJ, I hop on call with Nathan and just relay that clearly Jonathan is untrustworthy, but I think it's in our best interest to work with MJ for now. He agrees, sets up a group with me him and MJ and we just talk all about how Jonathan is a clown, and since we can't take him out, Zoe is the next best idea. Which is kinda sad bc I love Zoe, we talk about weed and pokemon and communism and we just vibe. But unfortunately even tho I'd rather see Asya go bc we haven't talked very much, she doesn't seem to be much of an option this round. So after that conversation, I get on call with Jessie, we spill all the tea to each other. She tells me about Nathan's Trian Idol, even though Nathan already told me lmao. But she and I agree that Nathan is gonna be a huge threat to win if we let him get much further, so we want to take him out sometime before like, f5. The real gag of this game is that the NuTrian pairs aren't me and Cindi/Jessie and Nathan, but me and Jessie/Cindi and Nathan. But yeah that was my night and I'm feeling cautiously optimistic for this vote and the future of my game.

I trust jay we had a really good game call late last night and I think we are on the same page . ahhh im gonna kms bc there is like a 50% chance i'm going this round. jonathan won immunity which is great for him but that takes the target off his back and puts it onto mine. nathan cindi jay and jessie + zach are planning on voting for me while me, jonathon, mj, jules, and asya are going to vote for zach. however, it's theorized that zach has an automatic vote against him for the rocket ship which he claimed he found on an adventure, but probably didn't. that's an advantage to us, but nathan is planning on slashing jonathan's vote. so it'll be 5-5 me and zach, which will take us to a revote in which hopefully jay and cindi will flip so they don't have to go to rocks. if we have to go to rocks, that means i'm safe!! hopefully. many other things could happen, such a cindi and jay thinking we're going to blindside nathan and voting him instead of me, or nathan feeling comfy and not using his vote slasher. any way it could go, i'm nervous as FUCK. i dont want to go home!! i would be so sad :(

So MJ just came to me and explained that it's Nathan leaving tonight. I told him I'd think on it and that I'd rather look out for myself than look out for Nathan. But the thing is, going with MJ and not with Nathan...it kinda fucks me. I trust MJ, but everyone else who's voting for Nathan??? Jonathan, Zoe, Jules, Asya?? I have no strategic relationship with Zoe, no relationship in general with Jules and Asya, and Jonathan is proven completely untrustworthy. While on the other side there's Nathan, Cindi, Zach, and Jessie, people who I've put my trust in on NuTrian, and with Zach he's been up front with me this whole round and I just like him more than most people in the game. And if I truly do want to look out for myself, I can't destroy all the relationships I've built throughout the whole game for people I met three days ago and have absolutely no strategic read on. Ultimately the only people who will feel especially burned by this are MJ and Jonathan, and if all goes to plan MJ won't be in the game anymore, and Jonathan is already not my biggest fan. Really thinking about it, the only people Nathan leaving benefits right now ARE MJ and Jonathan. Like I was all about working with MJ yesterday bc we were gonna vote Zoe and I felt comfortable with that and from there I was willing to take out Nathan. But MJ is trying to take the control here, bc if he does there's a good chance he never loses it.

Dear Jonathan, Why would I vote out someone loyal to me when I get added to the plan last minute and you've had my name in your mouth all round? Did you not learn your lesson last round? I'm a better player than you.

“My “Best of 2016” Mix

Hey guys! ThingsFallAfart here (aka Kathleen).

For my first mixtape post, I’m cheating a little and sharing with you something I made back in February: my favorite songs of 2016. The notable exception here is anything from Lemonade, since that’s not available on Spotify. That might be a blessing, though, because I don’t think I could pick one song off that album anyway!

I also want to note that these are NOT in order of how much I like them, but rather I tried to make them flow into each other well.

1. “Identikit” by Radiohead. There’s a lot of baggage that comes along with being a Radiohead fan. I hate talking about them, because people tend to either think that they’re the new Beatles or that they’re overrated, both of which are boring opinions to me. I’m much more interested in how music makes me feel, physically, than in what Pitchfork thinks. And so, what I actually want to say: the layered voices in this song are so beautiful. And I love the echo-y effects. And I love how full and rich it sounds. I want to turn this up so loud and let it resonate in me. Do you know the feeling when a concert starts and you can feel the soundwaves in your chest? That’s the closest thing I have to religion, and this song does it for me.

2. “Jesus Alone” by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. I don’t know if this is common knowledge for this particular audience, but Nick Cave’s teenaged son fell off a cliff and died in 2015 when they were recording this album. It’s such an unimaginable tragedy, and a lot of fans thought he would just be done with everything after that. But then they released this album, and it’s so haunting and tragic and grief-stricken, and it affected me almost as much as Blackstar did (which was a lot). I’m extremely attached to Nick Cave, and the droning guitars incite an almost meditative state in me.

3. “Father’s Child” by Michael Kiwanuka. This guy deserves to be huge. When the backup vocals and strings fill in the background of this song, my chest fills up. I love the dancey-soul beat and the way that he sings and the guitar work and the piano and the strings and the gospel-y backup singers. Talking about music is so hard! I’m trying to be more specific than “it sounds good”, but that’s, like, what music is, man.

4. “Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)” by David Bowie. Were you affected by Bowie’s death? I was. I saw the news as soon as I woke up that day and collapsed into a sobbing heap. I’m one of the millions (billions?) of people who consider David Bowie to be one of the key elements of my identity. He changed the world. I couldn’t listen to this album for the first couple days he was gone, and then I listened to it every spare second for months, crying every time. Then I stopped crying, and I still kept listening. This album would’ve been one of the best albums I’ve heard even without the tragic circumstances. But it’s still inextricably bound to his death, and it will always make me sad, and I’m glad that we have this to remember him by. Why did I pick this track? I don’t know. They’re all perfect. This one got stuck in my head a lot. I love the driving beat and the minor key and the intensity behind “I kissed your face / I touched your face / Sue, goodbye”. Let’s move on to something less depressing!

5. “On the Level” by Leonard Cohen. Oh my god, come on. I’m sorry. 2016 sucked, you guys. So, here’s my Leonard Cohen journey: I have almost exclusively listened to his releases as an elderly man. I’m not very familiar with his actual hits. I’m very attached to the style he settled on as an old man, where he gravels his poetry with women singing gospel-type vocals behind him. His younger performances have those aspects, but he really leans into it the older he gets. If you like this track, I highly recommend his Live in London album from 2009. I like this particular song a lot. When I listen to it, I feel like he’s conspiratorially confessing to me at the beginning, and, when it takes off with the backing vocals, he’s practically joyful about his triumph over temptation. Leonard Cohen was an enormously important figure to me. His philosophy and spirituality and poetry have been my compass for many years.

6. “666 ʇ” by Bon Iver. Okay! Bon Iver! My husband hates him! He hates his high-pitched voice and the droning instrumentation! My husband is WRONG. I have loved every single Bon Iver release. This album is so weird and unexpected. Bon Iver has always had such a cool and unique sound, and with this album it got even cooler. The thing that binds together my musical taste is creativity, or, to be more specific, I like artists that get bored easily. I like artists who need to constantly change their sound. That willingness to experiment is, to me, a prime indication of talent. And also, related, I also get bored easily, so when I hear an album that surprises me, I fall in love. And I fell in love with 22, A Million.

7. “Sweet As Sweet Comes” by Robbie Fulks. Americana is a genre that I have trouble talking about. I love the country sound, with the focus on vocals and guitar and straightforward songwriting. I love the sound of Robbie Fulks’ voice. I want to see him live in a very small venue. This song makes me calm and happy.

8. “About to Find Out” by Margo Price. Okay, as much as Bowie and Cohen are part of my identity, classic country women like Loretta, Dolly, and Tammy are also integral to my life. I grew up on a farm in an extremely conservative county, and so, wouldn’t you know it, I’ve always been totally enamored by charming women using catchy songs and humor and incredible singing talent to lead a feminist revolt from inside the rural conservative culture. I genuinely believe that “The Pill” by Loretta Lynn is one of the most influential feminist works in American history. So I was thrilled to hear this album by Margo Price, who brings the same humor and talent and attitude to her music in what is clearly a direct homage to these incredible women (especially “Fist City”, which is one of the greatest songs of all time).

9. “Sun Don’t Shine” by Drive-By Truckers. I just saw these guys in concert, which I’ve been dying to do since Decoration Day in 2003, and they did not disappoint. This band splits the songwriting and lead vocals between Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, and I love them both, but Patterson (who sings this song) is my personal favorite. He has such an evocative voice, and his songwriting tends to speak to me in a personal way. These lyrics are more obscure than a lot of their songs, and this song is a simple expression of an emotion. If you listen to the entire album, which I highly recommend, this song serves as an intermission for an album full of angry protest songs about Tr*mp, gun violence, and police brutality. Every song on this album is incredible, but I chose this one because it... feels good to me.

10. “Call to Arms” by Sturgill Simpson. Oh man. Sturgill. I said earlier how much I like classic country, right? Metamodern Sounds is one of my very favorite albums, and the reason is a combo of incredible songs and the fact that he sounds like the son of Waylon and Merle. And THIS album? He took those incredible songs and that classic country sound and added in HORNS and DANCE BEATS and it is SO FUN! When he released his cover of “In Bloom” (which you should go listen to), I didn’t think it could get better. I listened to it over and over and over. And then this album came out, and oh my god, I went nuts. This song is so frantic and is like the epitome of what I want in a rock n’ roll song.

11. “The Three of Me” by William Bell. This is a really wonderful classic soul-sounding song. I’m so glad that the music industry is back into this sound again. Soul has never really gone away, but in recent years there’s definitely been a resurgence, which allows old-timers like William Bell to put out new stuff. I love the horns, I love the lyrics, I love the beat.

12. “The Ballad of the Costa Concordia” by Car Seat Headrest. I’m sure you all know how great this album is. This song is mildly operatic and super long and super rewarding. I can’t believe they used the ridiculous cruise chip crash as a metaphor for life. I can’t believe it. It should be so dumb, but instead it’s so so good. I love that this song has acts, like The Decemberists wrote something important and modern (I love The Decemberists, but I also like making gentle fun of them). I love when the song gets confused and angry and loud in the second half before launching into a driving rock beat. There’s a lot to be written about this song, and I can’t do it justice. There’s so much. It’s overwhelmingly dense and rich and incredible.

13. “Never Be Mine” by Angel Olsen. Haha, jgleduc already used this song on his mix! I like everything he said about this song: “[it] reminds me of a contemporary take on the songs the Beatles started to do on their own but still heavily under the influence of girl group, the staccato guitar chords, guitar effects, and drum rolls especially.” I love the retro sound of this song, and the whole album is really really amazing.

14. “Once More to See You” by Mitski. Another sort of retro-sounding song, like if Phil Spector produced Lykke Li. Did you know that you wanted that combination? Well, here it is. It sounds like it belongs in the Twin Peaks reboot, which is a guaranteed way for me to love a song.

15. “Close to You” by Frank Ocean. Everyone loves Frank Ocean! I spent months exclusively listening to Channel Orange when it came out, and I was one of those people complaining about how long he was taking to release the follow-up. Thank goodness Blond is AMAZING. I had trouble choosing what song to pick, but this one always stuck out to me a lot. I like that he hides behind the synths, and I like that it doesn’t resolve. It’s just this little fragment of a song that feels like a shard of his personality.

16. “Gods” by Maxwell. Oh man, I love Maxwell. His voice is absolutely beautiful, and this song has a beat that really gets me. I’m really picky about R&B, and this whole album is perfect to me.

17. “Unfamiliar” by Common. Maybe I talk to the wrong people, but I don’t think this album got enough attention. Common has had a couple duds in his career, but I think this album is as good as his classics, like Be. 18. “Mad” by Solange. There were so many Important Albums released in 2016. I think Solange’s was the most surprising, though. She’s always been really good, but this album is a genuine masterpiece. It’s personal and intelligent and creative and insightful and fun and an integral part of the conversation. Also, thank you, Solange, for giving us a really great Lil Wayne verse. 19. “Solid Wall of Sound” by A Tribe Called Quest. Okay, A of all, Q-Tip is one of my all-time favorite producers. B of all, this song features Busta, who is one of my all-time favorite rappers. C of all, Elton John recorded a new verse for them, and it brings me unending happiness when hip-hop artists get dad rock guys to contribute to their songs. This album is required listening, and I honestly feel privileged that I get to experience it.

I remember being a teenager who loved politics and government, who believed that even in the most heated debates and arguments in politics, all parties had the best interests of the country at heart, even if they disagreed on the means. I never watched the west wing until a couple of years ago, and the show has it’s own problems, but I had that starry-eyed, optimistic worldview that the show has, that government can go badly, and people in government may make mistakes, but despite the flaws of the system and the people, it is, at the end of the day, a beautiful, helpful, human thing, which at the end of (most) days makes the world a better place

D.C.,” the document says. “An online thread discussed specific calls for violence to include stating, ‘Be ready to fight.
