On this day of love and the day of the queen herself Danai Gurira's birthday (🥳💜), I just needed to take a moment before we kick off the ten-day countdown to marvel over the official TOWL promo we've got over the last few months.
"just know I love you" "my wife is my choice" "together, you and me can do anything" "it was always about getting back to you" "she's not gone" "I love you so, so much." "Until my last breath, I am yours" "You're the love of my life" - Rick 'I'm Utterly In Love With Michonne & The World Better Recognize' Grimes
Y'all. 🫠 The way I have been gagged and a puddle of emotion upon every release of promotion for this show - I truly do not know how I'm going to make it through six eps when just these trailers and teasers have me nearly passing out. Loving Richonne is the epitome of being fed. It's been feast on feast on feast and the show hasn't even come out yet. I can't thank Danai, Andy, and Scott enough.
Richonne has been something special to me for so many years and for so many reasons. And I know so many of us feel the same. We've cherished every win in the lead-up to TOWL, and just when I think surely it can't get any better…I'm reminded that there is no ceiling on Richonne's perfection, and they top themselves every time. 🙌🏽 (i already want to write dissertations on the promo alone 😋)
So I just had to write this out because I always want to remember what this exhilarating moment of anticipation feels like. After all these years of waiting and hoping that Rick and Michonne would make it back to each other and our screens, man have we won in abundance with their return. 😭
Throughout all this time, we held fast to the belief that Rick and Michonne's story is an epic and enduring love story because that was exactly what was shown on our screen. We knew this was a love supreme way back then, and I love that now it's stated out loud (and on giant spheres!) for all to see. If this is the kind of heart-bursting content we're getting in the promos, I truly can't even imagine the ride we're in for with these 6 eps. But baby, I'm buckled up and so excited for Richonne, Andy, Danai, and Scott to keep messing with my heart rate, because I almost went onto glory with today's romantic trailer. 😇
I know we're in for a one-of-a-kind ride with our one-of-a-kind couple. And I can't wait to spend the next 10 days reflecting on my absolute favorite heavy-hitter scenes from Richonne's journey so far and hearing about your top 10 takes as we prepare for the Richone blessings to continue with TOWL. #We'reAlmostThere #We'reGettingThereWe'reGettingHome 🥳

what book I would give each current formula one driver to introduce them to the joy of reading
an intellectual exercise no one* asked for
Max Verstappen: Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond - if you are nd and have read this book, you may understand me. otherwise just trust me. the impetus for this post
Checo Perez: The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White - this is an excellent read-aloud book for Sergio Jr.'s age, and there is nothing as wonderful as reading a compelling book to a kid you love, imho
Charles Leclerc: The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman - he is on the record as a Potter enjoyer. also, I think he would enjoy having a little animal friend
Carlos Sainz: Priestdaddy by Patricia Lockwood - okay yes this is partially a joke about the title, but this is a hilarious and wonderful memoir, about weird families and Catholicism, and I think Carlos would enjoy it.
Lando Norris: Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett - in my mind Lando is a little bit like @bright-and-burning but less cool, so this fits. also, the combination of high number of jokes/page + action/mystery seems like a good fit
Oscar Piastri: Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie - this book has the kind of mystery that really draws you in, plus I think Oscar would dig the questions about AI it digs into. I choose to believe with zero evidence that he would be interested in the funky gender stuff
Fernando Alonso: Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell - look me in the eye and tell me this book wasn't written for Fernando Alonso
Lance Stroll: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card - yeah
Lewis Hamilton: Die Trying by Lee Child - Lewis deserves to read mildly trashy thrillers <3 plus there's a Tom Cruise movie
George Russell: Changing My Mind by Zadie Smith - as a proud Brit, George should be reading one of the premiere English authors of the 21st century. her first book of essays is a fun and readable place to start
Yuki Tsunoda: Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel - I don't have a Yuki-lore explanation, I just want to give him one of my favorite books
Daniel Ricciardo: The Gunslinger by Steven King - The Dark Tower series is Lord of the Rings-esque in scope but Western-inflected in aesthetic and written by The Horror Guy, I think DR would enjoy
Alex Albon: The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee - I say this with so much love in my heart, but Alex wants to be seen as smart. this book is brilliantly written pop science
Logan Sargeant: Bloomability by Sharon Creech - yes this is a book for tween girls, but it's about boarding school in Switzerland, and Sharon Creech is a genius. if I could convince him to read it, I think he would love it
Valtteri Bottas: The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien - what are hobbits if not humanoid moomins?
Zhou Guanyu: Piranesi by Susannah Clarke - a fun, exciting, stylishly written book for a stylish guy
Kevin Magnussen: Watership Down by Richard Adams - rabbit warfare <3
Nico Hulkenberg: A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles - Hulk SEEMS like a Dad Who Reads Historical Fiction, even if he isn't yet
Pierre Gasly: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo - I almost said A Game of Thrones but I don't think that would be good for him. so, Six of Crows. he likes heists!
Esteban Ocon: City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty - a superhero origin story of sorts for Mr. Spiderman
Bonus: Liam Lawson: Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir - lesbian from New Zealand. let me have this
*ro asked for it, take it up with them @oscarpiastriwdc

Thank you!! Your analysis is way too complex for most of these fans tho lol. They keep talking about there wasn't enough CRM when everything about the conflcts/circumstances they were in and choices involved the CRM. Like I really don't get it.
Thank YOU for reading :)
I realize I have the advantage of starting with TOWL before forming any connection or allegiance to TWD and the other spinoffs. I can completely understand how, if you've watched something for over a decade (TWD premiered on 10/31/2010) and have all these hints of this ominous force that you could expect and hope for something bigger and more splashy, ESPECIALLY in an entertainment world where everything is supposed to be connected and "mean something."
Because I just showed up, I came in ready for what Danai, Andrew, and Scott wanted to create—a story with a narrative arc that was different from anything the TWD universe has explored before. In other words, I wasn't out here hoping and wishing for a S12. Can't be mad at the show for not giving me what I wanted when they never agreed to 🤷🏾‍♀️
I think some people are viewing and critiquing TOWL based on a promise that was never made and it's a shame because you're right—the CRM was the center of all their conflicts, circumstances, and choices... just in a more abstract way. By the time the show starts, they've already done extensive psychological damage to Rick. They've already destroyed cities and slaughtered hundreds of thousands of people. They've already lied and manipulated and decided how people should be living. We didn't see that play out on our screens step by step—nor did we need to. To go through that whole circus would just be more of the same from the flagship, something they specifically didn't want to do. I mean, I'm currently watching S8 (on E6 as of this response) and the whole season seems to be dedicated to the war with the Saviors. And we saw this formula with the Governor. And with Terminus. etc.
We get it. The CRM as utilized and weaponized by Beale is horrible. Why are they horrible? What's behind their methods and practice? How does the bond between Rick and Michonne hold up against this force? I'm glad the trio had the imagination and guts to explore that for six hours.
(Another note: They're also very clear that the threats from this subset of the CRM aren't over—there's still the million-large herds, the alleged 14-year timeline, and the spies that have infiltrated other communities, so all the hoopla about Richonne defeating the CRM too easily is just silly. There's so much story for them to tell if they want to.)

kinda annoying how people complain about the ending of towl just because their expectations or theories didn’t pan out how they wanted it to. and a majority of the ppl disappointed really were hoping michonne dies / sacrifices herself for rick’s survival or both of them die which makes zero sense anyway and would’ve made everything pointless. also because gimple made one comment saying he wants all the spin-offs to come together in some way people really latched onto that for dear life and thought that towl would be some starting point for that to happen even though it was wrapped for filming by then and was literally premiering. mind you it was always marketed as just being 6 episodes so i don’t know why people thought it would somehow lead to a grand fight with all the other characters. especially since daryl would’ve still been in france timeline wise so it’s not like that reunion would’ve happened either which is another big complaint i saw a lot.
and lets say rick and michonne didn’t blow up the frontliners or kill beale: portland would’ve fallen, kids kidnapped, millions dead and then what? they’re just supposed to let that happen? say it’s not their problem and try to go home anyways and pray the CRM doesn’t find their community? have rick go back to the civic republic and be stuck for even longer while michonne was supposed to go home and gather up whoever is left and march back to philadelphia with just guns and arrows i guess??? along with the commonwealth storm trooper wannabes? try and wage some kind of attack which would’ve been futile since the frontliners would’ve wiped them out even quicker than what happened in the finale resulting in no reunions for anybody and more dead characters?
they planned a six episode story and obviously weren’t going to leave it on some kind of cliff hanger or have some mysterious after credit set up scene because they weren’t thinking of a season two at the time of writing, it ended with a family reunion like it was always going to. but even if there is something else in the future there could still be more story to tell and the civic republic can still be involved. people act like they killed off the whole military in one quick go when it was just the guys in the red uniforms who take out entire cities that died (i think around 2000+ soldiers). its still a big military operation it can span different locations, they talked about there being CRM agents in different communities that could be explored more. having different generals or sergeants with different ideologies can still be a thing. there’s also that estimate about there only being 14? years left of life on earth and the threat of millions of walkers at once so idk seems like there’s multiple storyline possibilities if they choose to continue

NYCC 23 Thoughts
I know Caryl fans are more than ready to celebrate. I am too for what it's worth. Believe me, I'm so ready, but I also have concerns that some may not want or need to hear right now. And I get it. Fandom is supposed to provide a space for us to enjoy our favorite shows and characters without real life obstacles bleeding into it. My blog has really pushed those boundaries over the past year and half, so if that's not what you're looking for, feel free to scroll on by or block. If for some reason my rants are of any use to you, however, then here goes another one. Ahem.
Four middle-aged white men walk onto a stage...
…And proceed to make complete asses of themselves.
This is my biggest gripe with TWDU right now. It perpetuates the same tired, limited perspective of the upper class, middle-aged white man in not one, but all of the new spinoffs. TOWL is supposed to be about Rick and Michonne, but it's no secret Gimple favors Rick. Dead City is supposed to be about Negan and Maggie, but the showrunner only goes on and on and on about Negan/JDM in his interviews. S2 of le spinoff is supposed to be about Daryl and Carol, but...well, I'll get to that. My point is, representation offscreen matters because it affects what we see onscreen and which viewers will be drawn to watch. Personally, I didn’t feel drawn to anything during that panel, not because Melissa finally being announced isn’t exciting, but because the people speaking on her behalf always find ways to ruin the moment.
If Gimple wasn't going to talk about his show, I don't understand why he needed to be there. If it was a tradeoff, I would've rather seen Melissa up there and hear what she had to say about her own return and her own character in her own voice. If that still wasn't possible, I fully respect that, but there has to be some other way to deliver news besides constantly relying on male EPs who don't understand what her fans value about her. I worry this is how it's going to feel when I'm watching S2. I want Carol, but not a misrepresentation of her. Greg Nicotero is directing the premiere. Okay...and what about the other two blocks? Any women/POC directors? Anyone who's going to honor Carol the way she deserves instead of treating her like an extension of Daryl's story?
So, yeah. About that title. First of all, “The Book of Carol” is an odd choice in itself. The biblical allusions are annoying because they don't speak to who Carol is as a character. I’m not mad that it implies we’re getting Carol’s POV—quite the opposite—but I don’t like the confusion it’s causing either. Let’s be clear, Carol is not a short chapter in Daryl's story. She is Daryl’s story. Calling Melissa a "series regular" is extremely poor wording, and a sincere fuck you to whoever approved it for the announcement. She is a lead with EP credit and creative input. I am so sick of AMC leaving it up to the fans to debate her worth. Tell us she’s vital to the show, tell us it’s her show, and use clear language. Stop giving her haters more ammo they don't need and stop giving her fans more anxiety they really don't need.
Honestly, it would’ve been easier to accept if S2 was formally called TWD: Book of Carol. The problem is "The Book of Carol" is not the title. It's a subtitle of a (sub)title, and it's bullshit. It feels like a scam, another way to try to convince us we're getting what we want when we're not really getting much of anything. I don’t know if they're worried about false advertising since S2 won't be a Daryl and Carol story—more like a Carol story which, again, I’m not mad about as long as it leads to a reunion and canon by the end. Or maybe they’re stubbornly clinging to the belief that Daryl’s name is what sells despite the atrocious ratings suggesting otherwise. Daryl AND Carol do sell though, so why not lean all the way into it? Why risk turning the show into a laughing stock with obnoxious titles? These characters don’t deserve that.
Another thing that worries me is how it'll be promoted. As "The Book of Carol" or Daryl Dixon S2? Is it going to vary based on who AMC is trying to placate? Is "The Book of Carol" going to be smaller than Daryl Dixon on all the key art? Including Carol in the title was supposed to show that Daryl and Carol are equals. That way, Norman and Melissa would also be treated as equals by viewers and by co-workers. This doesn't look very equal to me...
Tumblr media
Why —why 😩— do they need to keep rehashing the filming location's origin story, and by rehashing, I mean lying about it and dragging Melissa and her fans through the mud when all we want to do is move the fuck on? I don't like that Gimple (savagely) threw Norman under the bus, and I don't like that Norman, whatever his intentions were, threw Melissa under the bus. Again, this is why we need to hear Melissa's thoughts on the show, specifically what Carol's (and Caryl's) journey will entail not just plot-wise, but emotionally. It's not fair to put all that responsibility on her to make everybody else look good, and I hope it won't come to that, but the people on that panel yesterday really weren't doing themselves or the show any favors. I was pretty unsettled by the number of times I heard the phrases "I wanted this" or "we wanted that." Has anyone ever taken the time to understand what their audience wants? Or has the show really just been a vanity project all along?
I was wary about Zabel pretty much from the start, but finally getting to hear him talk about Daryl cemented how poorly he understands who he is and more importantly what he means to fans. A man being torn between his former way of life and his new one is nothing groundbreaking. It's actually a pretty standard formula that can fit a lot of conventional heroes, but it does not work for Daryl Dixon. Daryl Dixon is not a conventional hero. Daryl Dixon is the most loyal character in TWD history, and it's been well established his loyalty is to his found family of over a decade--Rick, Michonne, Maggie, and especially Carol. We will never buy that Daryl could be torn between them and people he's only known for weeks/months. Someone who tries to force that should not be showrunning. Period. I am terrified to learn more about how Zabel views Carol because so far, it sounds like he doesn't think much of her at all. If he did, maybe he would've written something more substantial for her in the finale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We'll see what happens on Sunday. Hopefully they'll release the S2 teaser. Hopefully it’ll provide more reassurance. Hopefully something will. At the moment it just doesn't seem like AMC is capitalizing on Melissa's return as much as they could, and they're definitely not capitalizing on Caryl yet. That being said, and I can’t stress this enough, I do trust Melissa’s judgment. If she chose to come back—and she did—it’s for good reason. The wait is going to be difficult, but next year we’ll have six full episodes of Carol trying to find her soulmate. Nobody is taking that away from us no matter how many times the men put their foot in their mouths.

With the premiere of the first episode of The Ones Who Live fast approaching, I want to sneak in my final theory!:
In the picture posted above we see Rick wearing what appears to be a ball chain necklace. This is the first time we have seen Rick wear a necklace of any kind, so it must be really important for him to be wearing it, even when he’s relaxing in his bed (possibly waking up from sleep) in his little apartment at the CR.
The only two things I believe it can be are either 1) it’s a dog tag for the CRM, or 2) and the most likely option, it’s a necklace that’s holding something important to Rick. My guess is that it’s option 2 - it’s a ball chain necklace with something on it, and that something is the wedding ring to his relationship with Michonne (and possibly the same exact ring Michonne has been wearing ever since he got captured).
The only accessories Rick has worn has been his watch (which I guess can be important in the apocalypse to know roughly when the sun is going to set so it doesn’t matter that there was no explanation for that, or there was and I forgot), and his wedding ring to Lori (which he took off before he got into a relationship with Michonne). So again, for Andy (and Gimple and Danai) to have Rick wear a necklace in TOWL has to be very significant for the character, and that is exactly why I believe he has his wedding ring to Michonne on it.
The biggest reason I believe this is -
[Spoilers Ahead]
Rick gets his left hand cut off (most likely in his first few months of being at the CR). The left hand is of course the hand you wear your wedding ring on (after the first trailer dropped, it’s finally been made official that Rick and Michonne are indeed husband and wife, so it is only fitting that rings accompany the relationship don’t you think?), and since he can’t wear his wedding ring on his hand, putting it on a necklace makes perfect sense.
From leaked set pics we know Michonne eventually infiltrates and finds Rick at the CR and possibly stays in his apartment while they try to figure out how to escape. In the trailers we see Michonne wearing her necklace with the ring on it (that I now believe is the wedding ring to Rick and not Rick’s wedding ring to Lori, which I previously believed) with her armor before she gets into the CR, but in scenes where she’s ditched her armor and is in regular clothing we don’t see her wearing her necklace anymore, so there’s a chance she could have given the ring back to Rick and he wears it on the necklace since he can’t put it on his nonexistent hand. Michonne has worn his wedding ring around her neck for years, it would only be fitting (and poetic in a media sense) if Rick did the same after they reunited. I also have a feeling Michonne is with Rick in the top picture. It would explain why he looks so happy :’).
Of course it could be a dog tag, but I highly doubt it is because we haven’t see any CRM soldier wear one. Also, the last place Rick wants to be is at the CR and fighting in their wars and conflicts. Don’t you think he wouldn’t want to wear that thing all day if he didn’t have to and would want to take it off as soon as he gets in his apartment where he can finally be alone and have the freedom to take off all the things that remind him of his kidnappers and the reason why he can’t be with his family? He hates that place, why tf would he even want to wear their dog tag to bed? Highly unlikely if you know anything about Rick’s character.

TOWL Ep 1
Absolutely Speechless. 😭 I know I’ll find all the words for how much I adored this premiere eventually but for right now…just utter awe. Everything was INCREDIBLE. Andy and Danai's performance in ep 1 was excellent and quite truly what dreams are made of. Also I literally, not figuratively, literally stopped breathing several times from the heart-swelling emotion throughout.
I’m gonna eat 5 more of these dinners episodes, okay? 😊🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕💍

"I was in love with my son's best friend and I didn't know what to do."
LISTEN
LISTEN
as towl was coming up and since it premiered i've been doing a lot of rewatching of the supercut etc. as you do
and for WEEKS i've been percolating meta about the final ramp up to them getting together like handwriting in a notebook and shit level obsessed with the narrative arc
specifically how there's the extremely obvious thread throughout michonne's storyline in 6a that is just outright about her getting to the place where she's ready to accept that rick is what she wants, for herself, for her whole life
and how it's because the 'i'm with you' scene in conquer is just rick completely surrendering himself to her in this really intimate way literally disarming himself and offering everything up to her
and she supports him, pledges her loyalty, but she never accepts the offering (and plz don't get me started on him legit doing mr darcy ass handclenching after she walks out)
and it hit me so hard that this was rick walking right up to the precipice, that scene is this palpable build up to a moment that doesn't happen for ten more episodes because she hasn't gotten there yet, but rick is already there!! something inside him already knows! (and there's a whole other meta about that something taking it as rejection)
so anyway ty you towl for being the mvp once again and confirming that our years of discussions about how michonne only just gets there during the moment on the couch, but rick on the couch is like "finally" were correct

Thanks for what you posted, On Writing. It makes so much sense because that's what I saw in your stories. Committed, well written emotional immersion in each world. I definitely miss that. I honestly don't know if I'm more excited about the possibility that you'll repost them or about the TOWL premiere itself.
So yeah, no ask, just thoughts....and hopefulness!
Ah, thank you anon.
Times have changed and so has the public’s relationship with the written word, I get that. But in my mind the craft remains the same. Either you think of as a craft that requires trial and error and incremental improvement, or you simply do not take it that seriously. Neither is wrong per se, but I only suggest that if you want more attention, if you want a growing fanbase, if you want to even get your idea across in a way that can be processed without struggle, where one doesn’t have to ignore errors and turn off their logical mind to achieve immersion, I only suggest you pay attention to the craft.
Listening to Danai talk about writing has made me want to be a better one. Listening to her talk about being showrunner even for one episode makes me yearn to jump into the fire because she makes it sound so NECESSARY. The process, the struggle, the nurturing of “your baby” as she calls it. I only wish I can end up as prolific a writer as she is one of these days before I die.
I have been going through Vantage Point, making tweaks and even rethinking some things. So much of my perspective has changed since I wrote it originally. It will almost be a new story by the time I’m done with these revisions.
I’m taking my time, but I’m making good headway. I believe I can get it done in the next week.
So, let us watch TOWL for now! But I gave in. You got me. I’m going to repost it. I also started a one-shot based on some gifs I’ve been spoiled for with so once I’ve seen the episode I’ll be able to finish that as well.
Look at my ship, getting me writing for them again. Andy and Danai can’t hog all the fun!
-Kendra
