Living in the age of AI hype makes demands on all of us to come up with smartypants prognostications about how AI is about to change everything forever, and wow, it's pretty amazing, huh?
AI pitchmen don't make it easy. They like to pile on the cognitive dissonance and demand that we all somehow resolve it. This is a thing cult leaders do, too – tell blatant and obvious lies to their followers. When a cult follower repeats the lie to others, they are demonstrating their loyalty, both to the leader and to themselves.
Over and over, the claims of AI pitchmen turn out to be blatant lies. This has been the case since at least the age of the Mechanical Turk, the 18th chess-playing automaton that was actually just a chess player crammed into the base of an elaborate puppet that was exhibited as an autonomous, intelligent robot.
The most prominent Mechanical Turk huckster is Elon Musk, who habitually, blatantly and repeatedly lies about AI. He's been promising "full self driving" Telsas in "one to two years" for more than a decade. Periodically, he'll "demonstrate" a car that's in full-self driving mode – which then turns out to be canned, recorded demo:

Musk even trotted an autonomous, humanoid robot on-stage at an investor presentation, failing to mention that this mechanical marvel was just a person in a robot suit:

Now, Musk has announced that his junk-science neural interface company, Neuralink, has made the leap to implanting neural interface chips in a human brain. As Joan Westenberg writes, the press have repeated this claim as presumptively true, despite its wild implausibility:

I'm perfectly willing to believe that Musk would risk someone else's life to help him with this nonsense, because he doesn't see other people as real and deserving of compassion or empathy. But he's also profoundly lazy and is accustomed to a world that unquestioningly swallows his most outlandish pronouncements, so Occam's Razor dictates that the most likely explanation here is that he just made it up.
The odds that there's a human being beta-testing Musk's neural interface with the only brain they will ever have aren't zero. But I give it the same odds as the Raelians' claim to have cloned a human being:

The human-in-a-robot-suit gambit is everywhere in AI hype. Cruise, GM's disgraced "robot taxi" company, had 1.5 remote operators for every one of the cars on the road. They used AI to replace a single, low-waged driver with 1.5 high-waged, specialized technicians. Truly, it was a marvel.
Globalization is key to maintaining the guy-in-a-robot-suit phenomenon. Globalization gives AI pitchmen access to millions of low-waged workers who can pretend to be software programs, allowing us to pretend to have transcended the capitalism's exploitation trap. This is also a very old pattern – just a couple decades after the Mechanical Turk toured Europe, Thomas Jefferson returned from the continent with the dumbwaiter. Jefferson refined and installed these marvels, announcing to his dinner guests that they allowed him to replace his "servants" (that is, his slaves). Dumbwaiters don't replace slaves, of course – they just keep them out of sight:

So much AI turns out to be low-waged people in a call center in the Global South pretending to be robots that Indian techies have a joke about it: "AI stands for 'absent Indian'":

A reader wrote to me this week. They're a multi-decade veteran of Amazon who had a fascinating tale about the launch of Amazon Go, the "fully automated" Amazon retail outlets that let you wander around, pick up goods and walk out again, while AI-enabled cameras totted up the goods in your basket and charged your card for them.
According to this reader, the AI cameras didn't work any better than Tesla's full-self driving mode, and had to be backstopped by a minimum of three camera operators in an Indian call center, "so that there could be a quorum system for deciding on a customer's activity – three autopilots good, two autopilots bad."
Amazon got a ton of press from the launch of the Amazon Go stores. A lot of it was very favorable, of course: Mister Market is insatiably horny for firing human beings and replacing them with robots, so any announcement that you've got a human-replacing robot is a surefire way to make Line Go Up. But there was also plenty of critical press about this – pieces that took Amazon to task for replacing human beings with robots.
What was missing from the criticism? Articles that said that Amazon was probably lying about its robots, that it had replaced low-waged clerks in the USA with even-lower-waged camera-jockeys in India.
Which is a shame, because that criticism would have hit Amazon where it hurts, right there in the ole Line Go Up. Amazon's stock price boost off the back of the Amazon Go announcements represented the market's bet that Amazon would evert out of cyberspace and fill all of our physical retail corridors with monopolistic robot stores, moated with IP that prevented other retailers from similarly slashing their wage bills. That unbridgeable moat would guarantee Amazon generations of monopoly rents, which it would share with any shareholders who piled into the stock at that moment.
See the difference? Criticize Amazon for its devastatingly effective automation and you help Amazon sell stock to suckers, which makes Amazon executives richer. Criticize Amazon for lying about its automation, and you clobber the personal net worth of the executives who spun up this lie, because their portfolios are full of Amazon stock:

Amazon Go didn't go. The hundreds of Amazon Go stores we were promised never materialized. There's an embarrassing rump of 25 of these things still around, which will doubtless be quietly shuttered in the years to come. But Amazon Go wasn't a failure. It allowed its architects to pocket massive capital gains on the way to building generational wealth and establishing a new permanent aristocracy of habitual bullshitters dressed up as high-tech wizards.
"Wizard" is the right word for it. The high-tech sector pretends to be science fiction, but it's usually fantasy. For a generation, America's largest tech firms peddled the dream of imminently establishing colonies on distant worlds or even traveling to other solar systems, something that is still so far in our future that it might well never come to pass:

During the Space Age, we got the same kind of performative bullshit. On The Well David Gans mentioned hearing a promo on SiriusXM for a radio show with "the first AI co-host." To this, Craig L Maudlin replied, "Reminds me of fins on automobiles."
Yup, that's exactly it. An AI radio co-host is to artificial intelligence as a Cadillac Eldorado Biaritz tail-fin is to interstellar rocketry.

gerard way on style, authenticity, gender, british music from the 70s and 90s... and COSTUMES. that was just a primer on the topic i actually want to talk about, which is how different the outfits this past tour have been stylistically from anything gerard has PULLED FROM or DONE.
this entire run, 2022-23, the closest gerard ever got to wearing something he would've worn during the first period (01-13) was the when we were young shows. part making fun: the second night (the first was cancelled) they wore a replica of their revenge album run outfit with HEAVY old age makeup. part homage: night three, they wore something so reminiscent of colleen atwood's work that in conjunction with gerard's tour designer (marina toybina) saying atwood worked with gerard on something not specified and toybina not claiming this outfit as she usually would, led people to believe this was the work of atwood. which is significant because she designed the original black parade costumes!

every single other show was unique in some way. from the tshirts to loose jeans to short shorts to tight skirts to a nurse uniform to a full joan of arc get-up. this isnt to say they didnt divert from the "uniform" back in the day with other outfits -- but the new stuff either became the new regular or they were rare. they were always on theme. even beyond that, the wwwy looks are what people know them for. it's part anti-marketing -- no defintion, no statement. they just performed and people loved it. the only person to even publicize it is toybina, who just talked about the craft.
it's also part anti-glam aesthetically. for a decade, the same figures informed gerard's performance style. in evolving past The Past, he moves away from those figures. never entirely, especially not in artistic ideology. like you can see traces of ferry's idea of the authentic self interrupting expectations or bowie's evolution into softer adaptations of past selves -- but not as much as the hesitant alien look which was explicitly about that. looking at original glam rock style like bowie as ziggy stardust, there is an accentuation, drama, and single vision which defined mcr's revenge and early black parade aesthetics. those periods were gerard's biggest dedication to hair and make up until hesitant alien, which he describes as a return to glam.
looking at the tour vision today, it has none of these qualities. ive talked about how the outfits (mostly) arent highly dramatic or highly gendered, which is why i dont think calling it drag fits. esp on the drama point, that's a key aspect of glam missed. there's no makeup, no accentuation, no BIGNESS. the tour is marked by its long-range simplicity. when the drama comes, it's in the dirty and off-putting, not style. it's interesting that when way does act as a character, like the office worker or dracula, it's entirely physical like a stage actor not a singer. though those are just sparks. he doesnt "break" because it's just gerard as we know him.
one final thread to address here is the gender sphere. if gerard explicitly pulled from glam rock mcr 1.0 into hesitant alien, and he's mostly divorced from glam now... where is all this newfound gender presentation exploration coming from? from female archetypes (cheerleader, jackie-o) to theatrical gender neutrality (any of the body suits) to what wouldve been called "metrosexual" in 2006 (atlanta, nj2) to just a general feminine outfit (firefly, 8/9 of the 2023 leg) -- the artist has their source, meaning, motivation, sure. this step back from talking about anything is sooooooo genius for getting people to take what they want from the tour's artistic output. interpretation fuels discussion. people keep talking about the possible narratives of the albums. people keep talking about the constructed interpersonal narratives. people will keep talking about the mysterious narrative of this tour.
what people have taken from the looks of this tour is that they are a recontextualization of symbols gerard has always connected to -- one example is how cheerleaders went from an old failed pitch to the im not okay mv to revenge photoshoots to the blood and teenagers mvs. but unlike the wwwy outfits, he isnt using the symbols in the same way. it's entirely new that he becomes the exploited female figure he's attached to. the inspiration is the self. there's no avoidance. i think "foundations" had a lot do with the direction of the tour -- its self-reflection forming a new image, in both lyrics and sound, is exactly what the tour looks have been about. not Glam, not Post Glam... not mcr 1.0, not not mcr 1.0... making up new words for an old language to write stories not possible with just the old

"(Y/N)…" William softly called out, making you stir.
You slowly sat up and rubbed your eyes, seeing the train finally stopped.
"Good morning," William greeted, kissing the top of your head, making you smile.
"Is this our stop…?" you yawned, stretching your back.
"Yes," William confirmed, taking your bags out of the compartment.
You slowly got up, slapping your cheeks to wake you up, and helped William get your bags.
"Hup…!" you groaned, lifting up your suitcase as William checked your documents.
"Here," he took out his hand to you, making you look at him.
You shrugged your shoulders as you put your hand in his, making him slightly jump as he looked back at you.
You gave him an innocent smile as you swung your arms.
"I meant your bag, my love,"
"I know. I just wanted to hold your hand," you grinned, making William chuckle and shake his head as you both walked out of the train.
The station was filled with people scurrying around. Some were welcoming long-lost friends and family, while others roamed around to find their destination.
"Excuse me," a woman muttered, bumping into you and another group of people.
"Stay close," William warned, stepping in front of you as he shielded you from the crowd.
"Pardon me,"
"Make way!"
"Excuse me!"
"Sorry!" a boy apologized as he bumped into you, making you stumble to your side.
"(Y/N)!" William called out, catching your hand and pulling you back.
"Thanks…" you sighed, wrapping your arm around his.
"I wasn't expecting so many people at this time of the year…" William chuckled as he kept you close, stopping by a barren corner.
"It might be because of the festival in the next town over, or thieves come out during these times," he commented, making you raise a brow.
"Thieves?" you asked as William pulled out your wallet.
You let out a gasp as you checked your pockets. Sure enough, your wallet was gone.
"Quite crafty, aren't they?" he smiled, giving you back your wallet as you put it in your coat pocket.
"Lord William!" a man called out, waving his hand high with a sign with William's name.
You let out a sigh of relief as you both walked up to the man, working your way through the crowd.
"Wow…" you breathed out, admiring the hotel lobby. From the reflective surface floor to the glimmering chandelier on the ceiling, it was clear the hotel was for a chosen few.
"Let's go check in," William smiled, holding your hand as you walked up to the reception.
You noticed the people you passed by were in suits or extravagant dresses adorned with diamonds and gold.
You leaned closer to William, feeling a little out of place.
"Good day!" the receptionist chipped, opening up their book.
"Room for…?"
"Lord Moriarty," William answered as you kept looking around, admiring the decorations.
"Lord Moriarty…" he muttered, scanning through the names as he grabbed a key.
"Ah, here you are!" he smiled, opening a drawer filled with room keys.
"Your room will be the sunset suite on the fourth floor," he gave
William the key as you both gave your thanks, making your way to your hotel room.
"Oh, wow…!" you giggled, rushing inside the suite.
The decorations screamed "grand" with silver and gold. There was even a small chandelier, but it was just as extravagant as the one in the lobby.
Will chuckled as he followed you tour the room, admiring everything.
You made your way to the balcony, opening the door and feeling the fresh air hit you.
You took a deep breath and smiled, admiring the view of the city.
"Glad to see you like it," William smiled as he hugged you from behind, making you giggle.
You let out a deep sigh as you enjoyed the moment, the white noise of the city relaxing you.
"As much as I want to stay here, we really should start unpacking,"
William reminded, making you complain, but you followed him back inside anyway.
"We have dinner reservations, remember?" he reminded, making you perk up.
You checked yourself in the mirror again, making sure everything was in place.
"My love?" William knocked on your door.
"Come in," you called, checking your back.
You heard William gasp as he looked at you, making you shyly smile.
You saw him clean up his hair, wearing a tuxedo.
"What do you think?" you asked, spinning around.
William only smiled as he walked up to you, grabbing your hand as he pulled you to his chest.
"Absolutely gorgeous," he complimented, covering your cheek with kisses.
You chuckled as you wrapped your arms around him.
"You don't look so bad yourself," you smiled, pulling away, but he kept his arms around you.
"Will?" you called out, but he kept his hold.
"The dinner reservations?" you reminded, making him sigh.
"We still have fifteen minutes,"
"Then we better start going before traffic gets worse," you teased, pulling away as you grabbed your bag.
William let out another sigh as he followed you, keeping his hold on your hand.
"Perhaps we can move the reservation?"
"Perhaps not. You skipped lunch, remember?"
You sighed in satisfaction as you walked out of the shower.
"Will? Do you remember where we packed the-" you stopped mid-sentence when you saw William sleeping peacefully on the bed, making you smile.
You sat by his side as you moved away his hair.
"I guess you're all tired from planning this trip, huh?" you whispered, not expecting an answer.
"Thank you…" you kissed his forehead, tucking him inside the blankets and fluffing the pillows.
"Goodnight, my love," you whispered, closing the doors as silently as possible.
You stretched your back as you walked around the suite, looking for your room.
Raising a brow, you couldn't find the second bedroom.
"Oh, boy…" you sighed, covering yourself up as you made your way to the reception.
"Excuse me," you rang the bell, catching the receptionist's attention.
"There seems to be a mix-up with our rooms? There should've been two bedrooms," you inquired, making them go through their books.
"May I ask which room?"
"The sunset suite? Under Lord Moriarty?" you asked, peeking inside the book.
"…I'm sorry, but Lord Moriarty only asked for one bedroom," he clarified, making you widen your eyes.
"I see… Thank you," you bowed your head with an apologetic smile, making your way back to the suite.
"I guess I should've double-checked…" you dryly chuckled, walking up the elevators.

How do you know so much about 19th century France? Are there any resources (such as books and articles) you would recommend for learning about this time period?
Short answer: lots and lots of research, over time, in both long protracted chunks and small surgical lookups. When you read about 19th-century France this much, early on you have to stop every few minutes to look up what was happening at the Bastille or what have you, but after you've done that for a few years, you've built up a sort of sedimentary layer of accumulated knowledge. (Although of course I still get things wrong; I try but I'm not an actual historian!)
Here's a short reading list, although there are a ZILLION books out there that might be useful:
The Aesthetics of Reaction: Tradition, Faith, Identity, and the Visual Arts in France, 1900-1914 by Neil McWilliam (especially good for art movements)
Charles Garnier's Paris Opera: Architectural Empathy and the Renaissance of French Classicism by Christopher Mead
France: A History: From Gaul to de Gaulle by John Julius Norwich
How Paris Became Paris: The Invention of the Modern City by Joan DeJean
The Keys to French Opera in the Nineteenth Century by Herve Lacombe

Cruel Summer
You swore to yourself you’d never fall in love with any small, sweltering, middle of nowhere town but here you were settled down in Dynamite, Texas population 1,313 two stoplights dot the entire city. Back roads and flowering fields litter your view as far as your eye can see. You live in a modest little house that your new remote job’s salary is helping pay for. You pull into your driveway and notice the handsome stranger next door looking at the shingles and eaves of your sweet neighbor Joan’s house. Unloading your groceries you can’t help but notice the tan forearms and taut chest underneath a dusty blue tee shirt and strong looking legs and a small but pert looking ass in faded blue jeans. You yank the last of your bags out of your car when you hear a deep southern drawl behind you, “Can I give you a hand with your bags?” You turn around to face deep brown eyes, patchy beard with a heart near the chin and dimple and a sweet toothy smile. “Sure, you manage to get out, “names Joel and you are” as Joel grabs the majority of your bags biceps flexing underneath their weight and you stare unconsciously at them. “Your name is” he trails off and breaks your very obvious eye contact with his arms, the dimple showing and the blush creeping up your neck and face. “It’s Taylor” you say sweetly “nice to meet you Joel”. You grab the few bags not in his hands and your keys and unlock your front door that opens into a small but cozy living room and your very girlie pink kitchen, a poster of Taylor Swift hangs on your wall from her Eras tour and Joel chuckles when he sees it. “What, you ask incredulously, she was amazing in concert”.”I went with work friends and we had a fantastic girls night and drank and danced and relived our college years” “Just didn’t think you’d be into someone like that but hey whatever floats your boat darlin” He lays the bags on your kitchen table and helps you put stuff away seamlessly like you’ve known each other for years. After everything is put you away you offer Joel a drink to thank him and you wind up talking for what seems like forever. You talk about past lives, what brought you to Dynamite, dating history, favorite drinks, food, everything. 
After a few good glasses of wine and a good buzz growing between the two of you, you decide to sit outside in the cool Texas night air and continue talking and somewhat flirting. Joel grabs another glass of wine and drags his fingers lazily across your arms as he goes to sit down giving you goosebumps in the process and a familiar tug of heat starting to build in your stomach.  As you continue to talk his full lips and chocolate colored eyes draw you in just as sweet as his molasses sweet voice. You move closer to him on the front porch swing the scent of smoke and blackberries of the wine and his musk create an intoxicating combination and it draws you like a moth to a flame. The stars splay out over the midnight sky and your hands comes to rest on Joel’s thigh his large hand intertwining in yours, the heat continuing to simmer within you. “Definitely a beautiful night out tonight, so clear and this is the first time I’ve seen so many stars” you whisper and your face is dangerously close to his. He turns to face you eyes wide and with the haze of wine buzz his hand cups your chin and kisses your lips softly the tang of wine and cigarettes mixes headily in your mouth and your curl your tongue around his pulling it into yours more and his kisses get hungrier and more fast paced, his hands now wandering down your tank top to your chest pushing the strap down to reveal a baby blue lacy bra cup. His mouth leaves yours and licks and sucks down your neck dotting you with tiny little marks as the blush continues to bloom on your chest and cheeks. His mouth settles on the bra cup and his hands yanks down the cup to roll and pinch your nipple until it is a tender bud and it elicits soft moans out of your lips the swing tugging and moving hard on its chain and Joel continues to need your nipple and breast with his hands and mouth your hands steady on his muscular thighs and briefly moving upwards towards the growing bulge in his jeans. “Let’s go back inside onto a more comfortable surface the swing kisn’t made for this you playfully say”. Joel scoops you in his arms and kicks ope your back door ad you lead him down the hall past the kitchen to your bedroom, your heaven on earth. Walls a cool slate blue frame, a 4 post bechd and a big fluffy yet firm mattress. He tosses you onto the mattress and yanks off his shirt revealing a solid chest, golden tan skin and defined yet soft belly a sprinkle of hair leading down below his navel and those delicious arms of his. You take your tank off and shimmy out of your shorts the baby blue set you wore on full display for him. He pushes you up your bed and takes his belt off slowly wrapping it around your wrists and securing you to your headboard propped up against your pillows. Now, it was Ranboo’s turn to stare blankly.
Tubbo sighed. “Look, you wanna figure out what’s setting off the spidey senses or not?”
Silently, Ranboo joined their companion on the other side of the fence.
In the end, the duo found a grand total of 27 mourning doves, around 20 cowbirds, and no less than 300 grackles (all of which attacked them on sight), but absolutely nobody that could have been Watching them. It was eerily peaceful.
This pattern continued through the next few days. Ranboo’s “Spidey Senses” would go off in the middle of nowhere, they’d pull over, do a sweep of the area, and find absolutely nothing. The worst parts, though, were the nights. If even a little bit if the sky was visible, Ranboo would be entirely unable to sleep due to the constant feeling of being Watched. About 2 and a half days passed before Tubbo pulled them offroad into a little clearing. They had arrived.
As night fell, Tubbo hoisted a very disgruntled and blindfolded Ranboo onto the roof of the van.
“Really Tubbo, I don’t see why this is necessary.” “It’ll give the best impact Ran. You can take it off now by the way.”
The grumble building in their chest died as they lifted the blindfold off and looked up at the sky. It was beautiful. Stars were scattered across the massive expanse like paint splatters on a canvas. Purple nebulae accented the multi-colored dots. The crown jewel, however, was the full moon, glimmering high in the sky.
Tubbo started pointing at specific constellations, telling their stories. “That one’s Cassiopeia, classic victim of hubris. Earned Poseidon’s ire by saying her daughter was more beautiful than the Sea Nymphs. Got cast into the stars for that.”
Ranboo already knew most of the stories Tubbo was telling, having been the recipient of multiple Technoblade Infodumps, but they just let their companion ramble.
They sat there for what felt like hours, so engrossed by the stars and their stories that they didn’t immediately notice that the forest had gone dead silent. Once they did notice, however, they did their best to fill that silence with forced jokes and barely hidden dread. Ranboo was in the middle of a story both had heard a million times when it happened.
The sky.
Went.
Dark.
Just blinked out of existence, throwing everything into chaos. Tubbo immediately fumbled for his phone, but Ranboo sat ram-rod still, filling with dread. The feeling was back in full force. They were puffed up like an angry cat, in a way that would have been rather funny if it weren’t for the circumstances.
“Tubbo,” they whispered, “get in the car and get moving. Now.”
“Don’t need to tell me twice! Come on!” Tubbo’s shout seemed to be smothered by the void. The darkness was oppressive. Even Tubbo’s phone flashlight seemed to be swallowed into blackness.
Ranboo nearly face planted trying to get off the van’s roof. They leapt into the car as soon as they righted themself, and no sooner had they closed the door, they were off, racing down the road with high beams on and both hybrids holding on for dear life. Their flight was cut short when Ranboo noticed a speck of light growing much larger as it fell towards Earth.
It hit the ground hard, but left no crater. As the… thing unfolded itself from its landing spot, the only things in the duo’s minds were 1. Oh that’s really big, and 2. RUNRUNRUNRUN. Their minds were screaming at them to RUNMOVE do ANYTHING to get away, but they were frozen in place. Their panic spiked horribly when it lowered its head(?) to peer at them through the van window. The feeling of being Watched peaked, Ranboo’s panic was at a fever pitch and THEN…
The Thing… Spoke to them. No, not Spoke, not exactly. Its Voice rang out in their heads, loud, incomprehensible through layers of static and whispers, but still perfectly clear.

With that ominous message, the Thing vanished. Just blinked out of existence, much like the sky had earlier. Speaking of the sky, one peek out the window revealed everything was back to normal. Happy 77th Birthday Al Stewart, born September 5th 1945 in Glasgow.
Al Stewart grew up in the town of Wimborne, Dorset, England, after moving from Scotland with his mother, Joan Underwood. His father, Alastair MacKichan Stewart, who served as a flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force volunteer reserve, died in a plane crash during a 1945 training exercise before Stewart was born. He attended Wycliffe College, Gloucestershire as a boarder. After that, according to the song “Post World War II Blues” (from Past, Present and Future): “I came up to London when I was 19 with a corduroy jacket and a head full of dreams.”
And so it was that Al Stewart came to stardom as part of the legendary folk revival in the sixties and seventies and developed the combination of folk-rock songs with delicately woven tales of the great characters and events from history. Stewart has 19 studio albums between “Bedsitter Images” in 1967 and “Sparks of Ancient Light” in 2008, plus the live album “Uncorked” with Dave Nachmanoff in 2009.
Al continues to tour extensively around the U.S. and Europe. He is perhaps best known for his hits ‘Year of the Cat” from the Platinum album of the same name and the Platinum follow up album “Time Passages.” But his career spans four decades as a key figure in British music. He played at the first ever Glastonbury Festival in 1970, worked with Yoko Ono pre-Lennon and shared a London apartment with a young Paul Simon.
The Year of the Cat is the quintessential from Al and is one of my favourite songs from the 70’s, it’s the title song of his Platinum selling album. You can listen to the short version of the song on Youtube, or why not enjoy this live version recorded in April this year in New York. I love the keyboards  in the intro,  flute solo then a fine guitar solo, before flautist steps forward for a lovely bit of saxophone, it’s a fine display from Al and the band, and in my opinion one of the most complete songs ever recorded.

On the evening of Tuesday 7 May, 1963, an enthusiastic crowd of opera lovers filed into the Grand Opera House in Belfast, Northern Ireland, for a production of Puccini’s Madam Butterfly. In the wings, nervously waiting to make his UK debut as a professional singer, was an unknown young Italian tenor. His name? Luciano Pavarotti.
When did Luciano Pavarotti start performing?
Pavarotti had sung in the UK before, though not as an operatic soloist. Eight years previously, aged just 19, he had travelled to Wales with the Corale Rossini, a male voice choir from his hometown of Modena, to compete at the Eisteddfod in Llangollen. The choir won first prize in its category, and their success fired Luciano with a desire to launch his own career in music.
Eight years of patient training in his native Italy followed, with Pavarotti working as a teacher and insurance salesman to pay the bills. Then bookings started coming – Puccini’s La bohème in Reggio Emilia, Verdi’s La traviata in Belgrade, a Vienna State Opera debut – and the stage was set for Pavarotti to begin looking beyond continental Europe for further opportunities and experiences. The Belfast Butterfly was the first of these, and it proved crucially important.
How did Pavarotti end up performing in Belfast?
Alerted by the buzz about his voice coming from Italy, the Grand Opera Society of Northern Ireland had booked Pavarotti to sing the part of the caddish American lieutenant BF Pinkerton. The Society was by no means a fully-fledged operatic company. Formed six years previously, its ‘Grand Opera Weeks’ mixed local singers with more experienced soloists from abroad, adding heft in key roles and a whiff of international sophistication. To pay the soloists, fund-raising events were organised, and in 1963 the Society took a punt on Pavarotti’s as yet unproved Pinkerton, hoping that the gamble would prove a good one.
How was Pavarotti received?
It was, as from the outset the strapping young Italian made a positive impression. ‘He was like a big rugby player,’ recalled local soprano Margaret Smyth, who played Pinkerton’s American wife Kate. ‘A very pleasant person and easy to work with.’ Another cast member, Nan Murray, was equally impressed: ‘The voice just blew you away, it really did. It just soared.’
Pavarotti ‘wasn’t a wonderful actor’, Smyth added – a complaint that dogged him throughout his career – but for the Belfast audience it didn’t matter. ‘On the first night people heard this magnificent voice, and the place just erupted,’ Murray remembered. ‘The audience became very animated and were clapping and whistling when he came on for his curtain call.’
The rest is, as they say, history. Within months Pavarotti was making his Covent Garden debut in La bohème, replacing an indisposed Giuseppe Di Stefano. Engagements at Glyndebourne and La Scala followed, and in 1965 he toured Australia with soprano Joan Sutherland, a partnership immortalised in the many classic recordings they went on to make together. The path to operatic superstardom was well and truly established.
It was 36 years before Pavarotti sang in Belfast again, in an open-air concert at Parliament Buildings, Stormont. The city had not forgotten him. A sold-out crowd of 11,000 attended, and a few years later the Grand Opera House named its café Luciano’s in his honour.
Pavarotti himself remembered the Belfast Butterfly fondly, and knew that it was pivotal in his professional development. ‘I was appearing with a Japanese soprano who said I was singing too loud,’ he commented. ‘I ignored her. I knew I was making a big impression in Belfast and it was at the Opera House that my career really took off.’

Decolonising the Curriculum
Art history lags behind other disciplines in incorporating art by black and ethnic minorities argues Richard Hylton

Frank Bowling’s forthcoming major retrospective at Tate Britain has been a long time coming. So long, in fact, that visitors to it will be able to ‘experience’ what Tate describes as ‘the entirety of Bowling’s 60-year career’. As ‘one of Britain’s most visionary painters’ who ‘went on to study at the Royal College of Art alongside David Hockney and RB Kitaj’, and who ‘became the first Black artist nominated as a Royal Academician’, Bowling has finally been recognised by the upper echelons of the UK art establishment. Like Rasheed Araeen’s retrospective in 2017-18, organised by the Van Abbemuseum in Eindoven before touring to the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead (as well as Geneva’s MAMCO and Moscow’s Garage Museum of Contemporary Art) that charted Araeen’s 60-year career (Interview AM413), Bowling’s retrospective characterises recent institutional attempts at slowly inserting black artists into British art history. It is difficult to overstate the significance of these exhibitions. Both Bowling and Araeen are in their 80s. Furthermore, these shows mark a break from posthumous recognition bestowed on artists such as Ronald Moody, Aubrey Williams, Anwar Jalal Shemza and Donald Rodney.
 Accompanying the display of substantial bodies of work spanning several decades are equally substantial monographs on Bowling and Araeen respectively, which include essays by a coterie of curators, critics and art historians. These exhibitions and monographs reflect the museum sector’s continuing attempts to diversify the canon. But is academia’s instrumental contribution to these exhibitions evidence of a move towards expansive and pluralised notions of art history? In any number of retrospective exhibitions staged in the UK over the past few years, including those on Hannah Höch, Eva Hesse, Thomas Ruff, Käthe Kollwitz and more recently Joan Jonas, Anni Albers and Franz West, academics often play key roles, be it as curators, writers or advisers. Often testament to their sustained and prolonged academic inquiry, it follows that these artists figure prominently in course offerings on modern and contemporary art. Given that postwar black artists have been largely excised from dominant art history narratives, is the academy suitably equipped to follow the museum sector in diversifying its curriculum or does its role in historical revisionism mask prevailing racial and cultural hierarchies within art history? This article considers the racial and cultural politics of academe in the UK today. It argues that while feminist-based theories, for example, have played an instrumental role in challenging notions of the canon, conversely post-colonial discourse in its many forms, though equally important, remains largely marginalised if non-existent across the course offerings of many art history departments in the UK. Concepts of difference and pluralism are presently more widely reflected in the UK, not least by universities eager to project themselves as tolerant and inclusive environments. However, from their curricula to employment practices, academe remains largely impervious and resistant to change. Is this a consequence of an unspoken white privilege which continues to pervade and dominate the field of art history?
In 2000, as part of a presentation for my MA in History of Art, I explored the politics of black artists in British art. Ruminating on why Bowling had been and continued to be frozen out of mainstream narratives of British art, I showed Who’s Afraid of Barney Newman, 1968, from Bowling’s now widely acclaimed map paintings series. The paintings represented an amalgamation of ideas pertaining to abstraction and representation, culture and identity, as well as being a witty homage to the revered US painter Barnett Newman. Comprising shimmering green and red sections, intersected by a luminous yellow crevice, reminiscent of Newman’s signature ‘zip’ motif, a faint but discernible white outline of the map of Guyana, Bowling’s country of birth, reinforced the interplay between representation and abstraction. This confluence of narratives and entry points to Bowling’s work were, so I thought, sufficient to spark and sustain a productive discussion in an art history context. However, at the end of my presentation, and possibly as a means of igniting discussion within the student group, an art history lecturer ventured the opinion that the UK was awash with painters working in studios waiting to be discovered. Although a fleeting, if not flippant comment which would not find its way into print, the lecturer’s observation did represent for me a certain hostility within art history teaching towards asserting that the art world is a racially structured space. This personal experience took place within what could be considered a relatively liberal and progressive art history department. Nevertheless, it embodied, in microcosm, the formidable challenges and obstacles within art history. For the record, in 2000, at the age of 65, Bowling was not ‘waiting to be discovered’. His exemplary practice and the high regard in which he was held was reflected in many important exhibitions of his work in the UK and the US, which belied his systematic exclusion from the mainstream art world. In the intervening years, Bowling’s stock has risen significantly within the museum arena, yet art history teaches us nothing; despite a plethora of awards, exhibitions and critical attention, we are offered only a selective view of history. Tate’s foregrounding of Bowling’s time working alongside Hockney and Kitaj is a case in point. Scouring Tate: A History from 1998 by Frances Spalding reveals not a single mention of Bowling. Following Lubaina Himid being heralded as the oldest practitioner to win the coveted Turner Prize, the BBC glibly commented that ‘Himid made her name in the 1980s as one of the leaders of the British black arts movement – both painting and curating exhibitions of similarly overlooked artists’. Where Bowling is now seamlessly positioned as part of postwar British art, Himid’s recognition was framed by a casual acknowledgement of ‘similarly overlooked artists’. These seemingly different forms of historical recovery nullify rather than address the incalculable damage systematic art-world exclusions have had and continue to have both on individual practitioners and on wider narratives of art history.
Art historians and cultural theorists have offered insightful texts which could in many ways be considered as templates for reading and complicating conceptions of British art history. For example, Kobena Mercer’s essay ‘Ethnicity and Internationality: New British Art and Diaspora-Based Blackness’ from 2000, published in Third Text (whose founding editor was Araeen), considered ‘the curious position(s) of diaspora artists amidst the contradictory forces of art world globalisation and regressive localism’, thereby intervening to address the stranglehold yBas had on art history. Such important essays, however, remain at academia’s periphery.
The weighty monograph which accompanies Araeen’s retrospective synergises the museum and academia. The publication includes ten texts charting Araeen’s enduring and expansive career as an artist, curator, writer, publisher and editor. This formidable collection of essays by academics such as Michael Newman, Marcus du Sautoy, Zöe Sutherland, John Roberts and Courtney J Martin (who, interestingly, is also a contributor to Bowling’s monograph) leaves us with plenty to ponder, with titles such as ‘Third Text: Modernism and Negritude, and the Critique of Ethnicity’, ‘Dialectics of Modernity and Counter Modernity’ , ‘Politics of Symmetry’ and ‘Equality, Resistance, Hospitality: Abstraction and Universality in the Work of Rasheed Araeen’ and so on. Nick Aikens’s decision, as the publication’s editor, to primarily call on academics is in many respects in keeping with the conventions of such retrospective tomes. When considered in relation to academia, however, it does raise a question about what function this writing has as part of a wider commitment to challenging what Charles Esche describes in his preface to the monograph as ‘the partiality and blindness of Eurocentric modernism’. Is this writing on Araeen akin to an otherwise absent parent who lavishes copious birthday gifts on their child? The relative paucity of teaching within academia on postwar black artists does temper the critical triumphalism of Araeen’s monograph. The contributors’ biographies alone suggest that their essays here are, almost without exception, a break from their usual artists or areas of interest. Is there a correlation between the type of voices of authority who now champion excluded practitioners and the voices which previously ignored their exclusion?
Cultural theorists and art historians have contributed an immense range of scholarship, much of it academic, which has done much to expand and challenge received notions of art history. Three anthologies produced between 1999 and 2008 explored key themes spanning contemporary African art as an emerging force during the 1990s, the re-examination of art from the colonial period, and new discourses on modern and contemporary art. Reading the Contemporary: African Art from Theory to the Market Place, 1999, edited by Olu Oguibe and Okwui Enwezor, pooled a wide range of articles from journals and exhibition catalogues published between 1991 and 1997, written by art historians, anthropologists and cultural theorists such as Kwame Anthony Appiah, Mercer, VY Mudimbe, Laura Mulvey, Everlyn Nicodemus, Chika Okeke and John Picton. Similarly, Race-ing Art History: Critical Readings in Race and Art History, 2002, edited by Kymberly N Pinder, includes a broad collection of writing but this time using a narrower ‘historical lens’, primarily focusing on art from the 19th and 20th centuries but also including art from ‘antiquity to the middle ages, and Modernism and its “Primitive” Legacy’ in order to reconsider historical painting, through to the work of artists such as Sargent Johnson, Horace Pippin and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Then there is Annotating Art’s Histories: Cross-Cultural Perspectives in the Visual Arts 2005-08, co-published by MIT Press and edited by Mercer, which further exemplifies critical thinking emanating from academia. The first volume, Cosmopolitan Modernisms, 2005, offered what Mercer described as ‘a partial and provisional review of how we have arrived at the current state of play with regard to understanding cultural difference, not as an arbitrary irrelevance that detracts from the “essence” of art, nor as a social problem to be managed by compensatory policies, but as a distinctive feature of modern art and modernity that was always there and which is not going to go away’. Unlike the previous two anthologies, Mercer’s series was primarily based on new writing, but in keeping with their aspiration it too ‘sets out to question the depth of our historical understanding of cultural difference’. We could also cite art journals such as Third Text, Nka Journal of Contemporary African Art and Small Axe, launched in 1987, 1993 and 1997 respectively, which have also, to varying degrees, been supported by those based in the academic world. But why has this wealth of publishing been unable to have any impact on the presumed white authority which continues to underpin the teaching of art history? The histories of black artists were often considered as separate if not largely irrelevant to art history. Today, museums are historicising and incorporating black artists into British art history’s grand narrative; but does this now present a conundrum for art history departments? It is an understatement to suggest that those responsible for managing art history departments think more carefully about what constitute core subjects and specialisms in the 21st century. Artist Mary Evans’s eloquent observation that ‘the political, social, and cultural dynamics of modern Britain are in many respects the legacy of Britain’s imperial past’ provides an enticing starting point for narrating postwar British art. Rather than being seen as limited or specialist, though, such an approach to art history should be seen as a challenge to existing conventions. This is not a new proposition.
Art historians and cultural critics have for decades challenged the formidable orthodoxies on which art history has prevailed and been taught. Art historian Linda Nochlin’s groundbreaking essay ‘Why Are There No Great Women Artists’, 1971, and John Berger’s seminal television series and book Ways of Seeing, 1972, both exploded myths about the production, dissemination and interpretation of art. Exposing the gendered and socially stratified but unspoken narratives which governed art history, Nochlin and Berger brought not only new readings to the canon, but they also by necessity explicitly critiqued the epistemologies of art history. Influenced by this work, art historian Griselda Pollock recently noted in an updated preface to Old Mistresses: Women, Art and Ideology, 1981, which she co-authored with Rozsika Parker, that a book ‘merely trying to add back the missing names of women was doomed to failure’. Instead, it proposed a critique of the structural sexism in the discipline of art history itself. Such critical approaches are integral to art history teaching. Peggy Phelan’s Unmarked: The Politics of Performance, 1993, and Amelia Jones’s Body Art: Performing the Subject, 1998, were staple texts within my History of Art MA. In different ways, both went beyond merely arguing for representation within the canon to disrupting its convention (for Jones, it was ‘the particular potential of body art to destabilise the structures of conventional art history and art criticism’). In this context, is it possible to understand the limitations of historical revisionism as a means of upholding convention?
In ‘The Difficulties of Naming White Things’, 2012, Eddie Chambers offers a series of cogent observations about the often-unspoken conventions which are hidden in plain sight but permeate art history and academia. He expresses the ‘frustration of not being able to call what generally passes as art history white art history, even though, with its consistent omissions and partial accounts, that is what the universities of the country are by and large serving up within their art history departments’. Beyond what Griselda Pollock termed as challenging art history’s ‘structural sexism’, Chambers identifies what he considers to be ‘an uncomfortable and frequently unacknowledged racialised schism within art history and academia’. In the US some discipline areas are now habitually demarcated along racial lines, such as ‘African Americanist’, ‘Africanist art’, ‘African diasporaists’. In the UK, academe’s gravitation towards courses such as ‘global perspectives’ or ‘non-Western art’ may represent concessions to notions of inclusivity and diversity but, equally, these euphemistic and all-encompassing terms also serve to reinforce racial hierarchies within art history.
Keeping difference at arm’s length and maintaining the unspoken but explicit racial stratification within academia supports the status quo. This is an unsatisfactory situation not aided by the disparity between the number of white and black academics across the range of the UK’s universities, which is striking. Employment statistics paint a bleak picture. In 2011, it was reported in the Guardian that 50 out of 14,000 British professors were black, while in 2016/17, 25 black women and 90 black men could be counted among 19,000 professors. In Inside the Ivory Tower: Narratives of women of colour surviving and thriving in British academia, Deborah Gabriel describes this situation as reflecting the unspoken ‘white privilege’ which pervades academia and plays a critical role in perpetuating inequality. The situation is all the more perverse when considered against the significant numbers of black artists who have received honorary degrees from universities wanting to be seen to be progressive.
Today, marketing strategies and campaigns used by universities are key for the recruitment of fee-paying students. These promotional and often formulaic campaigns, across the sector, project university life as enjoyable, aspirational and inclusive. Perusing the plethora of university websites it is noticeable how prominent black people have become in this marketing. Conversely, delve a little deeper into these university websites and their academic departments, and black people are often conspicuous by their absence. While statistics testify to enduring inequality, in today’s market-driven educational economy the absence of black faculty carries even greater significance. Pursuing a career in academia is by no means the only purpose of a university education, yet, on current evidence, and despite the increase in numbers of black and Asian people receiving degrees, it seems that a sector eager to educate these students remains less inclined to employ them. Such realities temper the current university fad for advertising employment success rates of graduates.
The racialised employment practices of universities raise questions about the veracity and the purpose of equality statements and equal opportunity monitoring forms. Beyond liberal posturing, what purpose do such bureaucratic mechanisms serve? Racial inequality is an issue across academia but is there an area where it remains more pronounced than in the privileged world of art history? Women have undoubtedly fought hard to prosper here but, with few exceptions, art history departments remain as white today as they were 30 or 40 years ago. Is this responsible for black British scholars seeking opportunities in the US? Despite the critical triumphalism which underpins Bowling and Araeen’s retrospectives, day-to-day teaching of art history appears impervious to the changes proposed by the very scholarship it is producing. Clearly, what is needed is a more sustained engagement with a wider body of black artists’ histories. Equally, diversifying the curriculum needs to be supported by more sustained efforts to decolonise academia.

I could so imagine Lina getting grumpy and jealous that she couldn’t do such a simple task, and Kat finds it both very amusing and very cute, which makes Lina even grumpier because she was NOT cute. She was the oldest, maturest, most powerful queen, and she deserved the highest respect. And that only makes Kat laugh even more.
