i love how fraught and complicated discourse around various utena characters ‘dying’ is when anthy is literally stabbed to death eternally by a million swords imbued with human hatred. and then utena gets stabbed to death by them also. like. ‘death’ is incredibly interesting in rgu because most of the time it’s this ambiguous figurative thing that has interesting implications re: ohtori as a closed-off world one can escape. we are all trapped in our coffins. mamiya is the only named character with a grave. nemuro memorial hall functions as one all the same. ruka is implied to have died in the hospital— was he dead all along? who was the boy we saw for these two episodes? is this dead boy the same boy, or is this just another coincidence from the shadow girls, cutting like a knife? it’s heavily implied that akio and anthy murder kanae by poisoning her, adding to the previous implication that they were poisoning mr ohtori too, but there are no perceptible consequences of this. kanae’s absence is not felt. she’s fed an apple slice. what happens to the bodies? we know what happened to the 100 boys, but what about everyone else? and so on and so forth. ‘death’ is a tricky thing in utena, i think it’s constantly functioning on figurative and literal levels in very different ways for very different purposes. dios died. dios was dying. dios didn’t die. he grew up. etc etc
FUUUUUCK i just realized that that shot when Mikage's standing up against the wall so that his shoes are part of the lineup of all the dead boys' shoes it's to hint at the fact that Mikage's already dead
"The widely-adored Student Council members didn't get along very well. In fact, they had a tense relationship, almost to the point of discord."
objectively the best part of the first light novel is how much the student council all* hate each other's guts so i made a little compilation for anyone who doesn't feel like reading it <3
*juri & miki are buddies :) also touga derives enjoyment from being hated so i'm not sure to what extent he really hates the others back lol
juri vs saionji:
1) "His swordsmanship was his only strong point."
2) "A 'mistake'... is that really all it was?" Arisugawa Juri spoke softly, but still loud enough for Saionji to hear.
"What!?"
"You lost because you're so infatuated with our mysterious Rose Bride. It's made you rusty."
"Interesting. Why don't we test that theory?" Saionji said, bristling in response to Juri's criticism. Touga made no move to stop them. On the contrary, he looked amused at the situation, a smile playing about his lips.
saionji vs touga:
1) "What's normal varies from person to person. For instance, why don't you try to unravel these mysteries, best friend?"
Saionji, the target of Touga's words, glared at him with undisguised distaste.
2) "The two of them had been childhood friends, but now they got along terribly. Or, more accurately, Saionji harbored a deep one-sided hatred of Touga."
miki vs touga:
1) "He stopped writing, and glared at Touga."
2) "Touga-sempai! Did you... is this one if your plots!?"
"I don't know anything about it. It's 'The Ends of the World's doing."
"You liar.
juri vs touga:
1) "Don't get cocky, Touga," Juri said grumpily, from across the table.
2) "Touga, you're full of bullshit. I doubt you've said a sincere word in your whole life."
"My, such harsh words." Far from sounding hurt, Touga seemed like he was enjoying himself.
3) [afterword] Manga Juri is in love with Touga, but Novel Juri doesn't even like him. Actually, it would be more accurate to say she detests him.
bonus juri & miki palate cleanser:
"This is unlike you. What are you so worked up about?" Juri protested to Miki. But her voice held none of the iciness she'd shown when speaking to Utena and Saionji.
“that shining thing” so far has been used to mean an idealized past version of a girl— a muse to inspire Miki's music, which was Kozue up until now when Miki became disillusioned with her and moved on to projecting this ideal onto Anthy— lines up pretty well with Touga also trying to find an ideal girl which he thinks he has in Utena but not without projecting his ideals of femininity onto her… "the shining thing" being an unreal standard of womanhood tied to an idea of these characters being stuck in the past, unable to grow and develop… well just yeah Nanami is right!!! its nonsense!!!
Something something the only flashbacks in which Touga has long hair is in Tsuwabuki and Saionji's who both see him as someone above themselves that they aspire to/want to be seen as equal to in Saionji's case, while the only flashback in which his hair is short is in Nanami's photographs and flashback that was presumably before/not many days after they were "taken in" (re: sold) by the Kiryuus
nothing funnier (by which i mean heartbreakingly tragic) than saionji and touga both believing in true love privately while also going "true love is stupid sentimentality and it isn't real" publicly
I just finished watching it a couple months ago you are in for a good time and/or suffering!
What episode are you on and who are your favorite characters so far?
I'm enjoying the show so far AND suffering but that's the fun, right?
I'm on episode 14
Obviously my favorite character is Chuchu because who else would anyone pick for number one favorite Urena character but is it a cop out to say almost everyone? They all seem interesting for different reasons (though some are more love to hate like Saionji and especially Touga)
i think somehow, unfortunately, saionji is my favorite utena character? i hate his dumb little ass, but in a fun way. i love seeing him so i can go “haha little bitch boy.” he is going to hell and i want to be the one to drag him there.
A detail I appreciate upon this rewatch is that Utena never asks Anthy to ‘abandon her body to protect the blade’, basically the thing in the Touga rematch where Anthy kisses the sword and imbues it with some kind of power up.
We only see this done in this duel, this isn’t some power that Utena learns of then utilizes. The Sword of Dios is a seemingly regular blade, at most it might help Utena channel her connection with the Prince, but the Sword of Dios+ was able to cut through Juri’s blade. Even if Touga can’t access the power of Dios like Utena, he is able to access supernatural abilities through Anthy’s blessing.
So why doesn’t Utena use this power? Well, that would mean using Anthy as a “shield”; something many characters do throughout the series (most notably when Akio throws Anthy at Utena in the final duel). Utena is firm in her stance that she is Anthy’s protector, even though she doesn’t know what that means or that she sucks at it.
More importantly, asking Anthy to ‘bless’ the sowrd is asking Anthy to further demean/dehumanize herself. There’s a reason Utena looks away(the audience is never explicitly shown), it’s a vulgar act of subservience. There’s the obvious symbolism/implication that comes with a woman kissing a man’s sword, and forcing Anthy into that position (especially now that Utena knows that Anthy is compelled to do as she says) would be a betrayal of the nobility, that princely ideology, that Utena holds herself too.
While the story book prince would gladly accept tokens from maidens, Utena instead upgrades her powers by drawing on the sword Anthy draws from Utena’s own heart. When Anthy does aid this blade, she raises herself in a flourish instead of remaining down and demure. Utena, the noblest prince who never was, refuses the maiden’s blessing for the witch’s.
