headcanon: rin's father, matsuoka toraichi, loved the band queen when he was alive, so rin grew up listening to a lot of queen, and eventually the band became his comfort band. he listens to their songs whenever he misses his father.

when rin finally makes it to the olympics and team japan medals in some of the races, they return to japan and celebrate. one of his teammates hosts a house party and they drink and play games and have fun, and one of the songs that blasts through the speakers during the party is queen's "we are the champions." rin is overcome with emotion and he HATES crying in front of other people, so he moves to the corner as the lyrics and we'll keep on fighting till the end plays.

haru, who is more perceptive than he lets on and knows that this song (or band) means a lot to rin because of his father, decides to take a chance and comfort him. he hugs him as he cries, and the medals around their necks clink as they begin swaying in a gentle, comforting slow dance.

his other teammates catch on and decide to comfort rin as he cries (and they all know, deep down, that all of this means a lot to rin because his dream started when he first decided he wanted to honour his father's sacrifices). his tears become happy tears when his teammates surround him in some sort of a huddle, singing to the chorus loud and proud, some of them reaching out to wipe rin's tears away or pat him on the back.

haru eventually steps aside to let rin bask in the moment, and at some point he whispers a quiet, "you did it rin." when rin looks at him questioningly, haru tells him, in that odd, somewhat metaphoric way of his (a manner of speaking that he learned from his late grandmother), that "your father's spirit forever lives in you" and rin breaks. but it's a good breakdown; the kind that is cathartic.

and rin finally fully accepts that all the pain he'd gone through in his journey to realising his dreams had been worth it. every second had been worth it. rin isn't a failure like he'd once believed he was; he's a champion.

Ok, so i just got a small thought/headcanon that I have to externalize somehow...

Ok, so, we know that Toraichi Matsuoka was a fisherman and I don't know but with that fact you'll think that would make the Matsuoka family probably eat seafood on a daily basis (i mean, more than the Japanese average but maybe that's saying a lot) and that would lead Rin to have many memories of his family eating seafood together and I don't know why but that made me think that Rin is actually not a big fan of fish (it's already a common joke that the guy is a carnivore, whether due to his sports diet or not) And now I'm having thoughts of Rin having mixed feelings eating seafood because it brings back a lot of memories...and im just like...*sobs*

"you would've loved him," rin whispers hoarsely, tracing the kanji characters engraved into stone with his forefinger. the wind blows, just then, whipping his hair into disarray, and as the red momentarily blinds him, he reaches for the hand of the man crouched next to him for strength. "i wish you could've met him. i wish he could've met you." the solemnness is palpable.

"i'm sure I would've," says toraichi, squeezing his son's fingers. "loved him, that is. he gave up everything for us to be together again, after all."

that much is true. by the time rin had discovered that haru had spent his final moments completing the sacrificial ritual that would bring his father back from the dead in exchange of his own life, it had been too late. rin thinks distantly, as his fingers continue to trace over the family name over and over, that at the very least, haru, too, has been reunited with family.
