Listed fandom fun

A bit of random data before we jump into the rankings for listed fandoms …

Since the numbers post yesterday we've had signups for nearly 60 new auctions, bringing the current total to 779. That beats the number of signups for 2016/7, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, and puts us withing spitting distance of our record last year of 819. Can we do it? Will we do it? Signal boost FTH posts and encourage others to participate. More money raised for good causes, more fanworks in the world — it's a win/win!

Jupiter & Rahu : Ditziness & Weird Girl Humor

This post is inspired by an ask I received a while ago

Jupiter & Rahu girls in comedy cinema/television often play airheaded characters who are a bit ditzy and zany. Another feature is that all these characters are mostly harmless, good natured people. They can be mean/blunt but its because of their ditzy, airheaded nature and not out of malice.

All 3 Jupiter naks belong mostly to air signs (Punarvasu- Gemini, Vishaka-Libra, Purvabhadrapada- Aquarius) and same goes for all 3 Rahu naks (Ardra-Gemini, Swati-Libra, Shatabhisha-Aquarius) in fact all Rahu naks come right before a Jupiter nak. I have always personally believed that Rahu & Jupiter are similar in many ways but obviously different as well. Rahu is limitless expansion. Jupiter is boundless expansion within principles.

But all that aside, Jupiter & Rahu are literally air influenced and I do think its the presence of an excess of Air that makes someone come across as "airheaded".

The etymology of the word "airhead" is that one's head is filled with air and is thus empty. I have talked about Jupiter & even Rahu's limitless nature feeling "empty" for the natives themselves. Out of all the elements, air is the only one that can really said to be boundless, its not measurable or calculable, its just there, unlike water or earth or fire. but air has no physical form and while that is liberating, it also makes one feel empty and untethered and these are all emotional issues that a lot of Jupiter/Rahu people deal with.

Phoebe Buffay from Friends is another good example of this type of comedy. She is played by Lisa Kudrow's who has Rahu conjunct Ascendant in Punarvasu

Kelly Kapoor from The Office is the ditzy zany delusional gal played by Mindy Kaling who is Ardra Sun & Moon, with Mercury in Punarvasu

Meryl Streep- Ardra Sun often speaks and talks this way. Just watch any of her interviews and you can sense that Rahu/Jupiter airy nature/demeanour/comic sense

Janhvi Kapoor, Purvabhadrapada Sun, Mercury in Shatabhisha is known for her "dumb girl persona" that most people think is fake but tbh I just think she's a little slow due to all that Air influence lol

Harpo Marx- Punarvasu Moon, Mercury in Vishaka he was a silent comedian known for his highly exaggerated physical comedy that was very pantomime/clown-like. This is another aspect of the airhead/ditz, they don't just say dumb things, they do dumb things. Physical comedy is a big part of it.

London Tipton played by Brenda Song, Mercury conjunct Rahu in Purvabhadrapada

Christina Applegate, Shatabhisha Moon played a very ditzy character on Married With Children

These are all the examples off the top of my head. I feel like many Disney princesses will also fit this bill lol

You know what maybe I’m just tired and feeling the existential dread of growing up, but actually my small, petty hill to die on is that I don’t think I will ever forgive Disney for abandoning the fairies franchise. I cannot even properly express what those movies were to me as a kid. They very well may have been my first hyperfixation. But come on beyond the sentimental value, those movies:

Encouraged kids to take an interest in nature and be nice to plants and animals.

Depicted a (mostly female) friend group that spent virtually every scene they had together onscreen building each other up and supporting each other.

Featured a female lead who is essentially a mechanical engineer, and is not treated as any less magical or important for it than her friends who can magically make flowers grow or bend light (except for the first movie wherein her feeling less magical and important is the central conflict).

Gave said female lead a “love interest,” I say in quotations because while they are definitely implied to have romantic feelings for each other, he is never called anything other than her best friend and the two of them ending up together is never treated as an urgent priority. Their friendship is incredibly important to both of them, but no one acts like it’s a problem that they’re just friends for now.

Redeemed the mean girl pretty damn successfully (in my opinion), Vidia never apologizes for most of her actions onscreen, but she does realize when she’s gone too far and makes an effort to fix her mistakes, and from that point on she is integrated into the friend group who, as I mentioned before, spend 90% of their screen time uplifting each other.

In The Lost Treasure, let Tink’s temper have consequences, a good lesson for kids in not taking their friends for granted and treating them kindly, but also teaching respect for boundaries and personal space through Terrence’s end.

In Secret of the Wings, demonstrated that sometimes rules are there for safety reasons, but you can try to think of a creative solution to do what you want while still keeping things safe for everyone.

In Legend of the Neverbeast (admittedly not the greatest movie in the series), depicted the fairies having to say goodbye to an animal companion permanently, something most kids will probably experience at some point.

Inspired a banger of an online game and several banger songs.

And what has Disney done with this franchise they spent 7 years on (longer if you count the books)?

Allowed a massive decline in quality on the last movie made (Legend of the Neverbeast) and then acted shocked when it didn’t do as well as the previous ones.

Cancelled all fairy projects after that.

Shut down the game in 2013.

Made a bunch of the songs from the soundtracks seemingly disappear off the face of the earth.

I know it doesn’t make the top 100 shitty things Disney has done, probably not even the top 1000, but I am still extremely salty about it, even though it’s been almost 10 years.

Frozen Through the Years

Yearly Spotlight: 2023

Frozen’s 10th Anniversary

It was wild.

Starting off with a bang, in February Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Frozen III was in development, later confirmed by Josh Gad. Idina Menzel and Jen Lee confirmed it in June, with Jen Lee going on to say that she would not be directing this installment of the franchise. However, she confirmed that she knew the person who was, she loved their story, and she trusted them completely.

Her enthusiasm did not go unnoticed.

On top of the 10th Anniversary for Frozen (November 27) this year also marked the 100th Anniversary for Disney Studios as a whole (October 16). To commemorate both, much of the activity peaked towards the last three month of the year.

The hashtag #Frozen10 was created to celebrate the anniversary.

On October 11, the Forces of Nature podcast was released over several installments. It was met with mixed reviews; some enjoyed it, some were more critical of it, and most agreed that while it was fun, it did not have the chops to be a major installment of the Frozen franchise.

On October 16, Disney released a short film called Once Upon a Studio to commemorate their centennial celebration. It aired on ABC and showed the hustle and bustle of Disney Studios as everyone (all of our favorite characters) prepared for the big celebration! Elsa, Anna, Kristoff (and technically Hans) were among the many classic Disney characters that appeared!

Two novels were released this year. The first book was the first installment in the Disney Legends trilogy entitled Fixer Upper, written by Jen Calonita. It tells the story of Kristoff’s childhood and life before he met Anna in Frozen. The second novel, an anthology of short stories, was created specifically to celebrate #Frozen10. It is called All is Found, and it brought together 10 authors to write 10 short stories to celebrate the anniversary. It was edited by Heather Knowles and Mari Mancusi, veterans in non-film Frozen lore.

November is the month things started reallly picking up. The merchandising train at Disney rolled out a lot of Frozen merch, including limited edition dolls of the sisters specifically for the 10th anniversary. On November 16, Bob Iger announced a fourth installment of the franchise, with multiple voice actors and creators tied to the project confirming it later that same day. This coincided with the Grand Opening ceremony of the World of Frozen at Disneyland Hongkong. Jen Lee joined in this celebration, with the gates to the park opening four days later.

She informed the world on November 22 that Frozen III and Frozen IV were one story across two installments.

The anniversary itself was on November 27. Disney released a press release on their official website commemorating all that had happened in Frozen history (kind of like what we are doing with these blog posts). And, of course, the merchandising train spun out once again to give us all new merch specifically for the #Frozen10 celebration.

Towards the end of the month, the Frozen song playlist was added to Spotify and Season 5 of Disney Speedstorm was released with Frozen characters.

The year ended with exciting activity from the fandom! The Youtuber GeekCritique worked closely with the Arendelle Archives to create a video detailing the history of Arendelle. The video was released on December 23 and managed to make headlines! The other major project was a fanzine celebrating #Frozen10. Inspired by All is Found, several fans came together to create Water Has Memory: A Frozen Decade. Within the zine are the fandom's Frozen memories, presented in the form of Elsa & Anna accessing them together through Ahtohallan.

Needless to say, this year was a major leap forward for all things Frozen. It gave so much to look forward to, and it was a sizable way to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of this beloved story.

Austin Butler & Y/n top 10 paparazzi stills

It’s been a year since the instagram story that soft launched the relationship between Austin Butler and Y/n. There are rumors in Hollywood that the two were together long before they were caught making out in an alleyway, however we have no evidence of that. The couple knows how to keep their relationship a secret, in fact they are so good at that we can barely gather much material for this story.

That being said we do have our 10 favorite paparazzi moments of the two and we’ve ranked them all for you.

10. Out in Brooklyn

Only a few days after the 2022 Met gala where the two supposedly met for the first time, they sparked rumors about a potential affair after being photographed having coffee together. That outing was confirmed to have been in the presence of Austin’s then girlfriend Kaia Gerber. The rumors would’ve probably gone dead if it weren’t for the picture above, the two spend a day walking around Brooklyn, enjoying food together and visiting a local music store. Fans who saw them together that day have stated that the chemistry between them was undeniable and the way they laughed together looked so natural you couldn’t look at them without thinking she and him are dating.

9. At the Eras Tour together

Though she said she could never tour, Y/n accepted to be the opening act for a few of the Eras Tour shows. For no one’s surprise Austin accompanied her on all of those nights. Fans filmed him dancing, filming and taking pictures during Y/n’s set, while having a blast singing along to the songs. At the end of the first show Y/n opened, she and Austin were photographed leaving together, being all smiles and giggles. That night she also surprised the fans attending the show by joining Taylor up on stage for the acoustic part of the show and the two performed Swift’s song Paris, which they cowrote together. People in the audience said that she couldn’t take her eyes off of Austin.

8. Buying flowers together

Austin has said multiple times his a romantic, buying flowers for his girlfriend being one of his favorite ways of showing his love. The two were photographed together in Paris, walking the streets and stopping to buy two huge bouquets of flowers. Oh how we dream of having what they have. For the rest of that day Austin and Y/n were caught by the paparazzi multiple times and Austin was the one who proudly carried the bouquets in one hand while holding Y/n’s hand with the other.

7. Coney Island Ferris wheel ride

When doing their Actors on actors interview for Variety, Y/n told Austin that she and her parents used to spend a few days on Coney Island for the summer vacation. It seems that she wanted to show him what it was all about since the actor declared that he’s never been there before. They went on various rides, but this picture of the them cuddled up next to each other on the Ferris wheel is truly the highlight of the trip for us.

6. Disneyland date

Austin grew up just a few minutes away from Disneyland and going back to their Variety interview he told her that going the the amusement park was a regular occurrence for him. Y/n admitted to never having the opportunity to go but wishing to since she was a little girl. Back then the two were barely rumored to be dating, but nothing had been confirmed, Austin jokingly promised her that he’d take her to Disneyland and show her around. Seem like Butler is a man of his word and he kept that promise, because as soon as the news was out that the two were official, he wasted no time in taking her on a Disney trip.

5. Use me as a pillow

The first time people were a 100% convinced that all the rumors were true was when Austin and y/n left the 2023 Oscar awards together, with her leaning her head on his shoulder. In the picture he’s seen kissing the top of her hair, something not ‘friendly’ to do, so it was an obvious tell that there was more than friendship between them. Later that night they were photographed getting cozy together at Baz Luhrmann’s after party.

4. Hitting all the right angles

After posting an instagram story on her account, Y/n attracted paparazzi to her and Austin’s secret vacation. There were many pictures to come from their little Greece trip, including them fooling around on the beach, but our absolute favorite have to be the pictures of the two by the pool. Austin has been a long time self proclaimed amateur photographer, but to us it seems that the adjective amateur has no place next to his name, or maybe it was Y/n, his model that deserves all the credit. We haven’t seen any of the shots Butler took that day, but we can only assume they were top tier. These shots are the reason why Austin was deemed the internet’s best boyfriend.

3. Car make outs

Not a sight we see very often from Austin and Y/n, they like being private and they are very good at that. But sometimes the paparazzi get a little lucky and they snap million dollar pictures like this one. The couple was in L.A. at the time and reportedly was having dinner together at a nice restaurant. After they finished eating, they left together of course, but before taking off they took time to have a small make out session in the car. Oh to be young and in love

2. Subway rides

Y/n is a true born and raised New Yorker, her favorite activity in the city is to ride the subway. It seems to us that she wanted to share her questionable love for the subway with he beloved boyfriend. The always crowded subway was almost the perfect way to blend in, but not good enough, since someone was able to capture this cute moment between them. All we can do is wish to find someone that looks at us the same way Y/n looks at Austin.

1. Dark alleyways

This had to be our favorite by far, this photo dump of pictures hard launched the relationship and finally confirmed all our suspicions. It’s undeniable that these two gave it their all to keep us away for their love, but there’s only so much they can do. Everything about these pictures had us going absolutely feral, from his hand placement to their height difference. This has to be their “it” picture and there’s no denying that we all wished to be her in that exact moment.

Well this was out top 10 paparazzi photos of the very secretive couple. We can only hope for more moments like these going forward and some voices even whisper behind closed doors that there might be wedding bells ringing in the air soon.

MY version of a Wish rewrite

I know this is outside my usual lmk comfort zone but I saw the concept art for Wish, fell in love, saw the movie, got bored solid 5/10 but compared to what it could've been, the hype for it as Disney's big 100 shabang? Leaves much to be desired let's just say...

And most if not all wish content online is rewrites and redesigns anyway so Ima throw another one into the pile

BUT BEFORE WE START

I know we all love the idea of the big bad villain evil for the sake of evil. And I too miss the classic villains *chefs kiss* never forget

HOWEVER I decided to look at a slightly less evil(?) Magnifico and Amaya with a more tragic reason when they commit crimes and portray them as 'reasonable' and 'not that evil' as disney tried

But without further ado, lets get down to it:

first Asha will the daughter of Magnifico, Amaya and more importantly, the princess of Rosas (now she has a bigger connection to the people other than being just a tour guide)

We keep starboi (or as tumblr has dubbed them: Aster) as a humanoid creature, not a plushie

Amaya is totally in on the shenanigans with Magnifico they are ride or die couple

FIRSTLY, lets talk about ASHA:

I saw many people complain about the 'dorky' not like other girls trope

And I saw a counter where someone said people don't like a female awkward protagonist of color

My issue is this trope has been used multiple times already and if you don't have a good reason or make her charming, then sorry the trope is just cringy

So with Asha let's keep the awkwardness that's fine; public speaking ain't her strong suit, social anxiety baby

Asha here is more reserved and shy

having been the child of two powerful rulers, she has very big shoes to fill and her parents don't make it any easier

they dismiss her when she tries to learn magic saying 'she's not ready' and almost infantilize her

she learns magic in secret by sneaking into her father's study but doesn't practice it to not expose herself and she doubts her abilities

Her parents also don't let her handle any royal duties, they want her to play and not worry but don't allow her with them during ceremonies and such saying she's not ready

the people know they have a princess just don't know what she looks like but sing of her in poems and songs even without knowing her

she is allowed outside the palace as the island is as safe as it can be

despite this, Asha is incredibly compassionate and empathetic

she'd have very high emotional intelligence (cause I miss princesses like that)

she will help out wherever she can in town as a peacemaker and the people love her but don't know she's their princess

Asha is always desperate to make her parents proud and is so selfless to the point she forgets her own wants at times

she is still 17 nearing 18 but she doesn't know her own wish

she can keep her hobby of animation, just perhaps embarrassed to show anyone since her parents mentioned it's rather 'childish'

Please can someone give her some new duds. Her current fit is cute but between the long hair without a fringe and slim purple dress, I can't help but compare her to Rapunzel

KING MAGNIFICO AND QUEEN AMAYA:

ok this will be touchy

I want to delve into the fact that Magnifico is traumatized and crank it to 11

Amaya is a sourceress who was a refugee from an old war

the two met when Magnifico was building his kingdom and fell deeply in love

Amaya taught him magic and they advanced their kingdom into a utopia

The two always dreamed of a family and to build a land where their people would never suffer again

They view the people of Rosas as their children and are known as such. Treated as benevolent and the 'the loving founding parents of Rosas'

As time passed, the two gained more and more power and were able to treat their people even more even gaining the grand ability to grant wishes

the more they did, the more love they received and the granting wishes was the cherry on top

the couple grew greedy for the praise, they were practically gods in the kingdom's eyes

More time passed, as the kind rulers they are, they used their magic to do all the manual labor so the people wouldn't have to lift a finger

Now an isolated island full of a new generation with no work to do, the people spend their days praising the royal family

The issue? Well, now especially the young people of Rosas, don't know how to work. They rely soley on Magnifico and Amaya for survival and the couple knows it. That is how they like it

Over time, they viewed the people as helpless children without them. They're doing this for the people's own good in their own twisted beliefs. The wish granting in particular keeps the praise on them almost like a cult.

Their love for the kingdom grew twisted into obsession and they'd do ANYTHING to keep their innocent citizens like this.

Basically imagine a 'there is no war in Ba Sing Se' situation but the Dai Li are running it and the people they're kissing up to is the people of Rosas

The two love Asha dearly but perhaps a little too much

They infantilize her like I said and always views her as beneath them and work so hard to 'protect' her and their people that they actually rarely spend time to bond with the very girl they protect

ASTER (AKA STARBOI) (he/them btw):

first off, he will stay in that humanoid form as usual

They will be a shapeshifter in homage to the genie but how is he different from the genie you ask?

Well firstly he's mute. Or well, just like Tinkerbell, talks in jingles, his true voice unintelligable to the human ear

"But how is he going to sing 'at all co-" shshshshshhshs hush. I have a plan for that just wait

Secondly he will be made of pixie dust which functions like sandman, basically if he is punctured, then he will regenerate like sand

They can float via pixie dust and can spread it to other things

They can see they wishes of people, as in he can see those sparks in someone and can see/sense the hole left when they're taken away

To make someone else fly, all they need is pixie dust and happy thoughts

He's meant to be the personification of joy and hope

Now I've seen many people make him precious sunshine boi who is curious and kind and must protec-

And I like that concept but upon thinking bout it, Aster resembled more like a fae than anything

As a living being of joy and other-worldly, it really reminded me of Joy from inside out

So I want their charisma to be 17/10. Just the happiest, cheerful most flamboyant dude you've ever met to the point he's kinda a showoff like a class clown

Make them sassy! I want this star to be protected (at all costs lol) and simaltaneously a menace to society

He and Asha are like that meme with Ken and Barbie's mugshots but Aster absolutely knows what they're doing

But since he's only ever watched humans from afar, he has trouble empathizing with them and understanding them so sometimes they come off as insensitive

they kinda look down on humans as requiring the help of magic beings like them

Another downside is since he's comprised of joy and hope, whenever someone close loses hope or get's sad, he starts to lose his magic and eventually fade away.

His existence on earth basically depends on the emotions of those around him

"Are they the second star to the right? Cause isn't Ray married to the-" Hushshshshshshssh I saw in a comic (I forgot the creator if you know pls tell so I can credit) the idea of Evangeline and Raymond being Aster's parents and I love that so we keep it

So what are wishing stars exactly?

Like the blue fairy, they are magic (usually) benevolant beings who help grant human's wishes when they deserve it or have worked on it.

They are more guiding beings using magic to give a push like Gepetto wished for a son, Pinnochio came alive but needed to work to be a real boy

Now I know this is a rewrite and I said I'd elaborate on some issues but its late rn and I'm going to get yelled at so I'm going to have to carry on later

I'm not a big disney fan outside of childhood nostalgia but every time I see one of those prince rankings I'm like ok but I could rank them better. and I happened to be bored so I did

some mentions I have to make so people don't wonder:

flynn rider: basic choice. scientifically engineered to be a hot man. no bite or edge to him. if you look at concept art he was supposed to be a big guy but they changed him to this market researched douche with a soul patch. absolute travesty

aladdin: he’s cute and good-hearted, lies to get his way but learns to be true to himself. lessons we all learn in life. next

jim: has the best song. i too want the moment to be real

phoebus: mmm. ehh

prince charming: literally what it says on the tin. storybook prince. not a man, a plot device

cinderella's prince: has a thing for feet. nice. funny in the sequels but a cardboard box is more interesting than his design

10. hercules: hunky demigod himbo. true hero is tested by the strength of his heart. the lesson all gym bros need to learn.

9. quasimodo: has heart and character, and sang “out there” like an angel.

8. prince eric: spends all his days with his dog and playing the recorder. who let him out of containment. too nervous to kiss a girl he likes even though she is sending obvious signals. he wants to get the know her better. king

7. tarzan: loin-clothed hunk with the facial structure of a statue. roams the jungle to the tunes of phil collins. loves his mom without being weird about it. prime man

6. the beast: eye and soul candy for the monsterfuckers. hot take but he wasn’t that bad as a human. he was hot. especially when you consider that his backstory included him being so snobby and vain that he was turned into the beast. like isn't that the consequences of your actions pretty boy. love to see it

5. milo: linguist. has round glasses and that 90s curtain haircut. all features that can indicate sleeziness but he is a good guy, meaning sometimes a man with round glasses and 90s curtain haircut can be trusted. a lanky charming nerd and therefore my exact type unfortunately

4. kenai: excellent protagonist. so deep in the throes of toxic masculinity he gets turned into a bear. isn't that the consequences of your actions pretty boy

3. shang li: bisexual king. nothing more to add.

2. prince naveen: now I may come from a protestant culture but a lazy jackass learning the value of hard work and love is what it’s all about. a dish. gets turned into a frog, isn't that the consequences of your actions pretty bo-

1. robin hood: “he's a fox hahah furry" FUCK YOU. HE IS THE FINEST MAN OUT THERE. HE HANGS OUT WITH HIS BEST FRIEND IN THE WOODS. HE HAS BEEN TRUE TO HIS SWEETHEART SINCE CHILDHOOD. he thinks he’s not good enough for her, but in a chivalrous way instead of pathetic. steals from the rich and gives to the poor. great with kids. they don’t make men like this anymore, and with that I mean men of integrity. “MARIAN MY DARLING I LOVE YOU MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF.” (CRIES)(THROUGH TEARS) LOVE IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY YOU WERE JUST A CHILD AT PLAY

I FINALLY SAW WISH!!!! 😁😁😁

And I have some notes (gonna keep this to ten for the sake of length):

The queen was the best character we stan an awesome Disney queen I was getting some major Queen Arianna from Tangled: the Series vibes and was loving it.

2. 'This Wish' was as awesome a song as I'd hoped.

3. The rest....uh....hm. They were...nice. Just...not what I was hoping? (I miss Broadway-style 😞)

4. Oh gosh 'At All Costs.' How could an entire freakin' studio's worth of people watch that and have not one of them, not a single one, go "This is 100% not the tone we want they sound like they're gonna kiss." The confluence of emotions I felt watching that can not be described beyond "if I heard this for the first time without seeing the visuals I...would be drawing some interesting conclusions." And the worst part, it really is a beautiful song...in the intended romantic context. Seriously, I have watched some fan animatics of Asha and Star Boy singing this as intended and got the right kind of feels. Big mistake on Disney's part keeping it in sans the romance.

5. And on that note, the Star Boy should have been kept and he should have been Asha's love interest. Seriously, it would have been perfect. I've really missed having Disney romances and would have absolutely devoured an Asha/Star Boy storyline.

6. I also felt there were some really interesting plot threads left dangling that really should have been pulled for all they were worth. Yes, the story they had would have unraveled faster than that pair of long johns, but what they could weave in its place! *wistful sigh*

7. For instance: Sleepy-stand-in being all tired and 'blah' after losing his Wish. Great opportunity right here: giving up your wish means giving up your spark, your fire, your zest for life, that thing that makes living living. The result is a Stepford kingdom, where the docile populace suffer from chronic ennui and everything looks perfect on top, but when you dig a little deeper, you see that yikes, this place is messed up.

8. Also: King Magnifico should have been thrown off his tower. End of discussion. (it's tradition!!!)

9. The animation was pretty and all, but anyone else think the crew was *really* limited by it? I mean, they did the Cinderella dress transformation...without changing Asha's dress, presumably because they didn't have time/resources/ability to create another model in a different outfit. Again, it was pretty, but maybe....maybe they should do some more tinkering before using it for a feature again.

10. I know what they were going for with the whole 'she called down a star because we're all made of stardust' bit, but personally, I would have thought it would have been much more meaningful if her dad, the philosopher who was always talking about the stars, sent it to her. Would have been way more touching and ushered in a nice storyline about her relationship with her dad.

And one more for the road!

⚠️Long Post Alert⚠️

Alright I've seen a lot of (negative) buzz around Disney's new show "Primos" so I'm gonna put my 2 cents in

According to the Primos wiki, the show is about "Tater, an eccentric 10-year-old girl with big dreams and, unbeknownst to her, a certain “it factor” that makes her exceptional. When her 12 cousins (“primos” in Spanish) move in for the summer, they help her discover just what it is. Tater’s aspirations and larger-than-life imagination are seen via entries in her super-secret diary, which turn her deepest thoughts into grandiose animation sequences."

FIRST, it's yet ANOTHER piece of children's media about the main character + their large Latin American family.

Upon doing some research apparently this show is about the creator's personal experiences, which okay valid. But when creating media that meant to represent a community it would be better to offer a DIFFERENT perspective rather than give us the same trope that has been done to DEATH.

And I'm gonna be real with yall, I LOVE Coco and Encanto, but both movies also fall under this trope. Not all Latin American families live with their extended family, we don't need ANOTHER piece of media perpetuating the stereotype.

Also, Disney has been putting out a few shows on Disney Channel and Disney Junior that are clear knock offs of Nickelodeon shows. Some examples:

And...hm....lemme think....a kids TV show about a Mexican girl and her quirky large Mexican family getting into some Mexican™️ shenanigans...where have I seen that before...?

Oh right

Yeah the premises are slightly different, but it's essentially the same trope so already right off the bat Primos feels like a knock off version of The Casagrandes.

SECOND, there are many stereotypes already present in the series just from tbe opening theme. Many of the cousins fall into stereotypes themselves, particularly the names. Some the names of the cousins are Gordita, Big Nacho, Nachito, and Cookita. I've seen people justify the use of these names by saying many Latin Americans are given these names as nicknames, which is true. But then again, having a characters named Nacho and Gordita in a show that's supposed to be about LatAm representation is just in bad taste. It's giving "Marco Diaz from Star vs. the Forces of Evil being half Mexican and being obsessed with nachos for some reason but not representing his Latino heritage in any other way other than him wearing that Day of the Dead themed costume in The Blood Moon Ball ep." It feels lazy, and of course, stereotypical.

On TOP of this, the word "Cookita" in many LatAm countries is slang for pussy and the suffix "-ita" means small. And the character with this name is the BABY. So yeah maybe naming the B A B Y character something that to many Spanish speakers means "little pussy" in a show ABOUT Spanish speaking Latin Americans probably isn't the wisest decision.

Another detail people have been pointing out leans into negative Mexican stereotypes is the use of the "yellow filter".

Now I'm gonna be real and say I'm not 100% convinced about the yellow filter being used here. The show takes place over the summer, so the use of yellow might may be used to give the feeling of how hot it is, but I can totally see why Latin Americans would find this offensive.

Also the name "Terremoto Heights" has been heavily criticized. Terremoto means "earthquake" in Spanish and the earthquakes are common in LatAm countries. Then again, show takes place in LA, where a lot of earthquakes occur too. So Im not 100% convinced that this is flat out racist either, but it's definitely in poor taste.

THIRD, the thing that is being SLAMMED at the most, is the improper Spanish grammar and the creator's response to people pointing it out.

In the theme song, the phrase "¡Oye! Primos" is used a lot, which means "Hey cousins!" The issue with this phrase is that "Oye" means hey but in the singular tense, and "Primos" is plural. If you plug in "¡Oye! Primos" to Google translate you'll get Hey Cousins regardless, but in Spanish the phrase is not grammatically correct. In order for it to be grammatically correct the phrase would either need to be changed to "¡Oigan! Primos", "oigan" being the plural word for Hey, or "¡Oye! Primo" and make primo singular. People have been telling this to the creators of the series and well...they haven't exactly been taking it well.

Here's what the voice actress of the main character Tater, Myrna Garcia Velasco said her on social media (Instagram I think, I could be wrong) in response to the bad Spanish:

(If you can't listen to it I'll just summarize. Velasco says that Spanish is the language of the Spanish conquistadors and the only reason why Latinos are LATIN American and not indigenous is because of the Spanish, and to stay mad if you think her incorrect Spanish is an issue. She also brings up how they're "trying to make a good show" for kids who "don't have a grasp on any language" or something?? Idk that's pretty much what she's saying")

Basically this response doesn't make any fucking sense. "Spanish isn't our original language so it doesn't matter if I speak it correctly or not. I'm a NATIVE Mexican so it doesn't matter if I speak Spanish correctly or not"

Girl what the fuck does this mean??? News flash, but the majority of Latin America has been speaking Spanish for CENTURIES. You go to Mexico or most other Latin American countries and you'll find them speaking SPANISH. Yes it's because of the Spanish but it's part of our culture now whether you like it or not. It's like saying "oh it doesn't matter if I speak English correctly or not cause English isn't the US' ORIGINAL language anyway" ?????

Now, the story IS about a mixed kid. Tater is half white half Mexican, so if Tater is a Latina girl who doesn't know Spanish fluently (otherwise known as a "No-Sabo" kid), then the imperfect Spanish would make sense. If the idea behind Primos is to represent the Latin American kids who don't speak Spanish, then yeah thats fine and it was a directoral choice. But judging by Velasco's response, that doesn't seem like thats the idea?? She immediately got defensive and brought up the Spanish colonizers?? Which is relevant??? HOW???

On top of that, one member of the creative team, (not 100% sure who) called someone a "Grammar N@zi" for pointing out the grammatical errors and, well...

That's def not helping their case.

How the HELL are you gonna make show about a Spanish speaking Latin American family and NOT SPEAK SPANISH PROPERLY??? How the HELL are you gonna start beef with SPANISH SPEAKERS over whether or not it's important to speak Spanish CORRECTLY when portraying SPANISH SPEAKING PEOPLE IN MEDIA??? Yes slang exists, yes different LatAm countries speak Spanish differently, but grammar still exists??

OVERALL: Do I think Primos is this horribly racist dumpster fire? No. Are there MANY choices in this show that are just in poor taste? Absolutely 100%. Are the responses from the creative team outta pocket? Yes of course.

If you ask me, I think the main reason why people are so outraged over Primos is because the stereotypes and tropes are tired and dated, and people KNOW what writers are capable of. The response of this teaser, sandwiched between The Owl House ending and the premier of Across the Spiderverse, which have STELLAR LatAm rep, is proof of that. Luz Noceda, Miles Morales and Miguel O'Hara are SHINING examples of good SPANISH SPEAKING LatAm representation in children's media. We CAN have good LatAm protagonists in mediation, we've SEEN IT. We don't need all the stereotypes and overused tropes, so it makes sense why so many LatAm people feel like Primos is offensive and a step backwards.

Disney is getting lazy, they need to get their shit together

Favorite Elvis Photographs

Hello, all Elvis lovers in the Elvis world! I wanted to do this for a while now. Elvis A. Presley is arguably the most photographed man of the 20th century next to Walt Disney. Post your top 10 favorite Elvis photographs! I'll start.

The first photo of Young Elvis on record at age 2 with his parents.

I love this picture for several reasons. 1. Elvis is gorgeous. 2. He's breaking down barriers. A white man in the 50s was not supposed to he his haircut by a black man, but here he is. Chilling in the seat.

This iconic photo of Elvis in Jailhouse Rock is just amazing! 1957 per army during is most primal time... nuff said!

The day Elvis went back to Tupelo, Mississippi, and received the key to the city. Plus, did a concert at the fairgrounds. They have this photo enlarged at Graceland.

Elvis, with his girlfriend June Juanico back in the summer of 1956. She is definitely one of my favorite of his girlfriends. If y'all haven't read her book. Please go find it and read it. They are just so cute here.

Another Elvis photo that I love for several reasons, but I won't list them. What I will say is this, I wish I was as brave as Little Vanesse Thomas! She had the courage to do what we all wish we could do. Go up to Elvis and tell him, "Did you know you are my boyfriend?" She's an icon!

The infamous kiss! Don't we wish we were Ms. Barbara Gray?!? They took several pictures that day, and this one the favorite of all. Could it be the tongues touching? Or the attractive young man enticing the young woman?

This is one... my heart. Elvis' last performance. Big daddy was on fire. Voice was gorgeous. Such a magnificent take on Unchanged Melody.

Top 10 Sofia the First Songs

Fuck it, I know most of you dont give a shit about Sofia the First but this show has been a sheer delight for me so y'all gonna sit down, shut up and appreciate some good music. The music in this show is much like the music in Friendship is Magic. They both went way too hard than they needed to.

Here's the top 10 best songs in Sofia the First

10. King Cedric the Great

Villain songs are always fun and its even better when the villain singing it is about as dangerous as a rubber duck. Cedric is the true example of how to write a sympathetic villain. He's a hapless sorceror who's actually really good at magic but his anxiety combined with everyone (except Sofia and his niece Calista) viewing him as some kind of loser are the reason why he wants to take over the kingdom cos he thinks that's the only way he can get respect. As this song illustrates how he wants Sofia's amulet so he can use its powers, but as the episode goes on, he finds out he doesnt really have it in him to be truly evil for reasons I won't go into, cos the episode this song's from is SO good. Its called Cedric's Apprentice if anyone wants to look it up.

As for the song itself, its a homage to classic Disney villain songs but Cedric's plan is so childishly over the top its hard to take him seriously, which is the song's intention. Its a great juxtaposition. Jess Harnell's singing is just the ham on top of these cheese sandwich.

He really has a knack for playing characters that are totally wacko

9. Wendell's Way

Speaking of sorcerors, here's another villain: a kid named Wendell. A spoilt brat who stole all the flying horses of Enchancia for his birthday. He's like if Horrid Henry went to that terf wizard school. The song itself has a very boisterious energy, amplified by the hard rock drums and the lute/guitar solo?? which makes it all the more satisfying when Sofia, Amber and James get the upper hand in the end and Wendell's mother comes out of nowhere to ground him, its fucking great. Its nice to see a bully character actually stay a bully and not get force-redeemed by the writers so they can pull the 'everyone deserves a second chance' message , when in actuality, no, some people really are that mean and you're not obligated to give a shit about a bully. Wendell is, in retrospect, a breath of fresh air as the song doesnt pull some sad backstory out of the aether to make you feel sorry for this kid. No, he's just that selfish.

Also the lyric: 'That is a promise, but also a threat' is fucking great.

Its a simple song but a bop nonetheless.

8. Make Some Noise

Sometimes a song is good when its just plain fun. And this song definitely applies. In the episode this is from, Sofia befriends a bunch of trolls living under the castle that everyone warns her are dangerous and violent and here... theyre actually super chill. The fact that Sofia instantly gets into the groove is delightful and again showcases how compassionate she is.

The song itself has a fun, jazzy melody with the trolls using thier equivalents of piano, trumpets and of course their clubs. It's such a feel good song, almost like the voice actors just got up from the chairs and just danced like they dont give a shit and the directors just hit record. It really feels like a song you would hear at a party. Even the repeated animation doesnt bother me.

7. A Princess True

One of this show's biggest weakness is portraying people from different cultures cos its clear the show is made by mostly white people who have a limited understanding of non-white cultures and can easily fall into racist stereotypes without realising it. Its not by any means racist as the show features plenty of non white side characters (Khaled, Kashmir, Jun, Jin and Kari) that the main cast are on friendly terms with. But here, this song is relatively tame as this song is all about Sofia, a white girl, believing in Lani, a Hawaiian girl, as her actions throughout the episode are proof she's the real deal.

In the episode, Princess Leilani lost her family heirloom the Emerald Key into the sea after fighting an evil witch, where it gets washed up in Enchancia so Leilani goes to the castle to get the key back, cos its a key to help her parents find their way home from the sea. However, the witch Mamanu disguises herself as Leilani as well so she can trick the Enchancian royal family into giving her the Key. So Roland puts both Lanis to the test but the test involves the Lanis to act like THEIR cultural view of royalty. Sofia notices one of the Lanis aces it and the other competely fails at it and does something different instead. So Sofia thinks the latter is the real princess and this song is her showing her full support and belief that Lani is the true princess.

Its a very sweet song to a very meaty episode which is why I had to explain in full detail. Its not perfect but the song really encapsulates Sofia's and the show's earnestness towards non-white characters and I appreciate that. It helps the creator is Jewish and went on to make a show all about Latina culture and did actual research on it. So this song, and the episode itself is a good, albeit rocky start.

Even if they fucked it up with giving Lani powers in the next episode she appeared in, goddammnit why the magical native stereotype we were so close!!!!!

6. Me and My Mom

Creator Craig Gerber has stated many times that one of Sofia the First's core themes is teaching kids about blended families and how to adapt after getting new parents and step siblings in your life (since he was a child of divorce himself and had to adapt to having a new father and siblings). This song is about Sofia's struggles to adapt now that she has to share her mother with Amber and James. You really feel sorry for Sofia cos she's so used to having her mother being the only family she has and of course, is easily attached to her.

Its a very soft, heartfelt song that resonates with a lot of kids that are in Sofia's position. I bet they felt very seen by this episode.

5. Improvise

In the episode, Amber wants to join in Sofia's girl scout group but in typical Amber fashion, she brought nothing but dresses and jewellry to an outdoor trip and forgot to pack a tent. So Sofia and her friends teach her how to improvise via musical number. A cute lesson about being resourceful and a great example of Amber becoming a more versatile character as she grows to love the outdoors.

There's a very jovial, motivational energy to the song that really makes it stand out from the usual pep-talk songs in this show. What else can I say? Its a highlight of Amber's character development and a fun little song to boot. Whats not to love?

4. Two By Two

Amber's relationship with her sister Sofia is always expanded upon in the show but her relationship with brother James is a lot less so since Amber and James sparsely interact beyond typical sibling teasing. So its nice this episode, and this song helps establish how much Amber actually cares about her twin brother.

In the episode, Amber accidentally turns James into a toddler thanks to a botched magic spell cos Amber didnt want to share her birthday but as her and Sofia run around trying to find baby James. Sofia suggests to Amber to sing the twin song that James and Amber used to sing all the time when they were little. (which is just adorable)

I love how Amber starts the song in a very deadpan, almost annoyed tone until the second verse hits and slowly her singing becomes more melancholy and emotional, like the fact that her twin being lost is just now hitting her. Especially since she spent the whole episode wishing to have a birthday to herself for once, not realising that she's taking away James' birthday and thus losing him too. That small bit of her looking at the pocket watch with her and James' portrait it, finally finding baby James behind the throne, picking him up and hugging him and them finishing the song together

STOP, MY FUCKING HEART CANT TAKE THE AMOUNT OF CUTE

Its so nice to see a sibling relationship that's actually wholesome.

3. Dare to Risk It All

One of Amber's biggest flaws is her envy and her getting over being an jealous bitch to her little sister is a lesson that Amber has always had to learn in the show's earlier seasons. And while she has made some development, this is the episode where Amber makes the most change. And this song is emblematic of that.

Dare To Risk It All has Rapunzel appear to teach Amber that you have to put other's needs before your own to earn forgiveness, to prove you can change, which is a lesson not a lot of kids shows teach nowadays cos most shows like Steven Universe and even MLP put the pressure on the victim to forgive their bullies or let them off easy (especially if they're family) but in this episode, Sofia is rightfully angry at Amber for stealing her amulet and isnt afraid to snap at her for it the whole episode so Amber throughout this song (and the episode) realising how much Sofia means to her and it puts the pressure on Amber to be a better person and a better sister.

Its one of the few good Disney Princess songs the show has. The Disney Princess aspect of the show is honestly its biggest crutch cos Sofia always has a good role model with her mother and her dad to some extent and the princesses havent exactly had the best trakc record for teaching good lessons to Sofia since they either state the obvious or gaslight her. So its nice to see the princesses teach someone else for a change. And its Rapunzel, the best Disney princess.

Also bonus points for having a good song about earning forgiveness whilst flying dragons.

2. Princess Things

Sofia wants to do flying horse-racing even though mostly boys at her school do that sport and both Amber and Sofia's rival Prince Hugo are discouraging her from trying out the sport. Its your typical girl empowerment message. While the pilot episode established the whole premise, this episode (Just One of the Princes) and this song establishes Sofia's character: a pro-active princess who doesnt fall for anyone's bullshit, which is perfect for a moral center protagonist.

I love how Sofia's expression throughout the song goes from confused to smiling like she's internally screaming. And her verses are basically 'screw you guys i do whatever the fuck i want.' So not only did everyone waste their time singing to convince Sofia but in fact made her even MORE CONVINCED to try out the flying horse derby. Good job, guys.

Aside from that, the song itself is a bop. The repeated chorus really emphasises the peer pressure Sofia is going through. Second episode of the series and they're already making a hit.

1. All You Need

In the episode, Sofia meets Vivian, a princess who's a great artist and musician but is painfully shy and thus everyone is spreading rumours around her. Even Sofia was a bit apprehensive but she pushes through it to meet Vivian at her house whilst they work on their school project and this delightful song just pops up.

I love how it starts with Vivian nervously playing her lute and Sofia starts singing, whilst helping her IN SONG start brainstorming their ideas for a dream castle. Then after Sofia's verse is done: ending with the lyric, Ill paint all the towers blue, now the rest is up to you, Vivian immediately jumps and enthusiastically suggest her own ideas. The music even matches the tone of the characters. When it starts, its only Vivian's lute and a backing track but as soon as the bridge comes, the music swells when Sofia's singing motivates Vivian and its just chef kiss.

This song, as well as the episode this was from, made me really like Vivian as a side character and I always loved her interactions with Sofia whenever she made an appearance. I like how she retained her newfound confidence into later seasons, where she becomes just as pro-active as Sofia.

This song, to me, is what Sofia the First is all about. A girl who's just the sunniest child, befriending the shy kid in her class and having the most adorable musical number. Are there songs with better lyrics and theming? Absolutely. But the sheer serotonin levels this song has, as well as encapsulating the main character's compassion for others, is why this is the best song of the show
