ALSO I just … NEED to mention this creature. LOOK AT HIM. WHAT IS HE. WHO IS HEEE? So this is what is supposed to be Beta Hunter or whatever. Interesting, but even more so that apart from his familial connection to Obron and his eventual bond with Luz (that starts off a bit antagonistic) he is SO different to what ended up in comparison to the other characters. But you know who he does remind me of though?

This kiiiind of convinces me that Belos and Philip were originally different characters because ?? What is this. BECAUSE HE JUST STRAIGHT UP SOUNDS LIKE HOW I’D IMAGINE TWEEN PHILIP TO BE LOL a bratty witch hater who is too proud to ask for help, but will happily accept it. Except he would have gotten to actually interact and bond (EEEEP🥹!) with Luz as humans out of place. What a tragedy !!

He sounds like such a little shit. But he’s cute! I ADORE HIM. All this time I thought William was the original Hunter… but this sounds more like he was the original Philip 😆 but contained in a time capsule instead of allowed to grow into a menace.

Alas, poor William went from witch lunatic, to knight prince, to being eradicated from existence. Such is fate. But parts of him live in Hunter and Philip. But just like the non existent Wittebane story… Won’t stop me from wondering what if !

Thoughts, theories, or clues I've missed as to WHY he does that??? Because I think he did it before Evelyn shot/cursed him, if his blue eyes are anything to go by.

Idk if it's because I'm not American that I scratch my head at it, but I've searched high and low and can't find anything it might refer to, other than the typical skin**lker iconography of a monster looking deer.

There wasn't really stuff like this (that I could find) in any pequot tribes either that might've inspired Caleb's first mask for Philip.

In their playtime as children in the memories, Caleb was the witch, and Pip wore the mask as a hunter. But I can't for the life of me figure out why.

I've also been rewatcing the movie THE VVITCH that came out in 2015. Since it's a folk horror movie taking place in a Puritan new england setting, the brother that dies gets lured by a witch in the forest, and his name is Caleb. It's a pretty grotesque horror, so I thought maybe Dana was inspired by it. But I can't find anything there either that might thread insight, other than maybe that she saw the movie and liked the name Caleb and that's it.

I think the mask might just be..... because the crew thought it looked cool. LoL.

I wonder when the fandom will remember that Vee's going to get ALOT bigger and scarier as she grows up.

This isn’t exclusive to that one basilisk either, all the others she was with developed the same traits. (granted not as pronounced, probably cause they’re still young)

(You may be wondering, why they would look so different, but I a theory for it)

Tyrannosaurus Rex wasn’t just the single most massive and powerful predator that lived on land, it was also the only large predator on its continent during its entire reign. This was due to a rare form of Ontogenetic Growth,(which is the physiological changes in an animals development). Unlike other animals who are simply smaller and/or less formed versions of their parents, ala most reptiles, mammals, and even birds. The chicks of Tyrannosaurus were much daintier and more gracefully built than their parents; with smaller skulls/teeth and longer legs proportional to their body mass. This allows them to run much faster and catch smaller and more nimble prey than the adults, thus avoiding direct competition for food with them in youth. Only ages 14-18yrs old do their adult traits rapidly develop. Their bodies/limbs beefing up immensely, their teeth/skulls becoming more robust to take on the large prey they subsisted on as well as compete for territories against rivals. This combined with the protection of their parents allowed them to push out all other intermediate predators,(save Dakotaraptor), and monopolize the entire predator niche of Late Cretaceous North America.

As you can probably tell by close inspection Vee’s differences in appearance to the Greater Basilisk line up very well with the T-Rex. Her jaws/fangs are considerably smaller with her neck also being shorter/skinnier. In contrast, the fully developed adult basilisk could easily devour both an abomination and Willow’s buff plant monster whole. But it seems that while basilisks draw a lot their powers from magic, it doesn’t play a directly vital part of their immediate survival as Vee appeared no worse for wear with her magic shortage. And seeing as she also didn’t hesitate to attempt snapping up Luz as a treat it’s safe assume adult basilisks are carnivores,(or at least predatory omnivores like coyotes/hornbills/bears). Vee and perhaps even her slightly more developed peers on the other hand would likely fail spectacularly trying to replicate this,(not that would if they could either). So its safe to assume that whatever they would be going after, it would generally be both smaller and more manageable such as the demon rats/birds, magical objects, fruits/plant matter, and even cooked foods. This allows both youngsters and adults to occupy a territory without completely depleting it in a short period of time. This may initially seem hard to believe, but note the giant basilisk wasn’t exactly normal, as Vee explained her peer’s ravenous behavior stems from the major psychological damage their constant experimentation they were subjected to by Belos. In reality, Basilisks would’ve drained and consumed only one or a couple creatures in a single sitting to prevent prey stocks from running out.

At the end of the day however, this is just fun speculative biology/evolution, unless confirmed by the creators take everything I say as only theory not canonical fact. This also isn’t here to say that Vee or any of kind are naturally “evil,” it’s clear cruelty/violence isn’t inherent to them no more than any other witch or demon in the isles. Please everyone remember this:

The show may be ending, we may be about the watch the last piece of animated media that takes places in the wonderful universe of The Owl House...

But we still have the characters, we still have their world, we still have our headcanons, we still have the ships, we still have the fanart and fanfiction, and possibly the most important thing of all of them... We still have one another.

Thia community was born thanks to The Owl House's existence, it remained united and strong and evergrowing since its first announcement 3 and a half years ago. Just because the show is ending doesn't mean that those characters, fanarts, headcanons, fanfictions, ships and community will cease to exist once the last episode ends.

We are all still here, a few may leave, many more could come and take their place. In the end, everyone will remember something from the show, whatever be a particularly touching episode or scene, a character's personality and/or story, or the themes that envelope and define the show as a whole...

I rotate Belos in my mind so much because his entire arc was preventable but only by him. Only Belos could’ve stopped the direction he was going in and instead he dug the deepest hole imaginable. He continually choses The Worst thing to do in any situation because he’s so certain of himself that it’s eating him alive. His problems are self made, all of his enemies were created by his own actions, and he thinks he is the saddest victim of cancel culture ever because his worldview justifies his actions but nobody else shares that worldview (because it’s just wrong lmao).

I'd say that it's a good sign that your villain is hated by the fandom, actually - with its exceptions, the fact that people really and truly despise the character that they were supposed to despise shows good writing.

Of course, I would disagree with that loathing, but that's just because my tastes are different. Perhaps if it was a "best character concept," he'd go up higher lol

#and people judge characters by how likeable they are usually - not necessary by how good the concept behind them is #I say concept because some of the writing for Belos /is/ unsatisfactory. But that's because Dana herself dislikes writing him methinks #she said so once and I cannot even fathom someone not liking writing their Main Antagonist. The guy you Have to write a lot. #man. Look, I know it's a trope because it helps to simplify the narrative and limit the amount of characters the audience has to keep track of,

but I still don't like that virtually all of the important adult characters in the Owl House are childhood friends/high school sweethearts.

Warning you now under the cut is me rambling about my perspective on multiple popular fandom ships and such. My perspective won’t be accepted widely and that’s cool no hate to anyone who does ship these characters. Y’all do you I’m just sharing my word vomit. (No I did not mention any ship by name so this should stay in the tag it belongs in!)

I’m saying that the entire relationship between Luz and Amity always read a little weird to me. I don’t tend to enjoy most canon or fandom favorite ships so I really did not think much of it but the way they wrote romantic relationships was so off putting and inherently worse than how they wrote the platonic relationships within the show.

And no it’s not just Luz and Amity’s relationship that’s off putting to me, even Gus and Matt and Hunter and Willow (although more implied with the ending of TOH). It just doesn’t read as if any of them are comfortable and able to just exist together. Amity can’t go two seconds without mentioning or thinking of Luz (which is a major annoyance and is largely why I hated it when she was around because she lost anything that made her interesting and her own character but that’s another can of worms).

Willow gets downgraded into being “ Hunters girl “ which is not fair in the slightest to her. I love her character! I really like that we got that intense moment of her putting her damn foot down more than once! But it’s really disappointing and disheartening to see her entire character go down the drain because someone decided Hunter needed a partner (which has much as it’s a cute idea I genuinely do not think if he had a partner that it should of been Willow but again another can of worms.).

And goodness has funny has it is to see Gus make fun of Matt it’s also really hard for me to see it has romantic? Or in a romantic context. To me it just reads as two best friends but again nothing against people who do like these pairings, I get it it’s fun to ship characters. I just personally do not see it.

It also just irks me when a character gets completely put down and ruined because someone wanted to shove them into a relationship. Like damn I was enjoying Willow and Amity but okay ruin my two favorite characters in the whole show.

Again every ship I’ve talked about I don’t have an issue with. I don’t want anyone to think I’m out here mad or something I am disappointed in the way they’ve handled Amity and Willow’s characters after they got partners. I however contrary to most people in the fandom would of loved AceAro Luz or even Willow hell even Hunter. I just think it would be neat to see and because as much as relationships can be cute and all it’s always nice to see Aro representation.

(Also because Luz is very friend oriented and made her own found family which is so so cute and Willow went around and befriended everyone she could and also Hunter grew up with a fucked up understanding of the world and has canonly said his friends mean the world to him and that’s so fucking cool and nice to see for once). I also think it would work for their characters and arcs. Idk would of loved to see their characters remain intact that woulda been neat.

I saw some people ( both on twitter and here) comment on the fact this episode felt off in some way.

At first I couldn't put my finger on it but I think I figured it out.

This episode felt liminal.

Like a transition point. It's purpose is bringing us from the fun adventures of the show to end game.

There's 4 more episodes left and then season 3.

We're not getting another raeda backstory episode. We're not getting another fun flyer derby episode. We're not getting exposition on characters like Hunter and King. We are stopping Belos.

The last piece was finding out King is a titan.

Now everything we do from here on out will contribute to the finale directly.

This episode felt off because it's a point you're not supposed to stay in, you're transitioning from a state of being to another. Like the gas station or the hotel you stop at when you go on long trips.

This might as well be our final chill episode where we didn't have the threat of Belos looming in the back of our minds while watching.

Collector Society Ideas: Preservation

Now I know everyone likes to give all their collector characters special archival powers and that so neat but think- how inconvenient would it be for each collector to need to do everything when it comes to overseeing and preserving other life forms/civilizations/worlds (possibly even dimensions) even with the cosmic powers they have?

I think while most of them would probably be able to do those things, for the sake of efficiency they could have assigned specialties. Not even delving into the inner workings of their own social hierarchies and societal niches, I feel like preservation could be put into at LEAST 3 different areas; Scholars, Archivists, and Exterminators

Scholars: Collectors who would specialize in the documentation of important cultural aspects as well as the natural workings of each world they may be preserving. Much like in S3E2, collectors have an obvious love for documentation, whether in story form or other, even just the storybook the collector in the show has takes 300 years to finish reading (as per development storyboards). They’re meticulous in writing precise details.

Archivists: Collectors who specialize in the hands-on approach to preservation. While archival could ALSO refer to the written documentation, inferencing from the show it has more to do with capturing life forms in a preserved form, almost like how museums and science labs have specimens (ie. taxidermy and specimen jars) Knowing exactly how something looks plays a huge part in knowing how it works, so archiving other beings goes hand in hand with the documentations scholars would perform.

Exterminators: When preservation efforts go haywire, specifically due to outside interference from other beings, Exterminators can be called in to cull opposition on larger scales. While a single collector of another type may be able to deal with one or two interfering “pests”, when a whole civilization or world defies their efforts, a specialist would need to be called upon in order to keep efforts on track. As apathetic to other’s emotions normal collectors could be, exterminators would by far be the most apathetic of the bunch. It would not mean however that they themselves are inherently devoid of emotion.

But this is just my rambling and personal world building, yours might be different, but if you have any addendums or thoughts on other niches feel free to share them! I’d love to hear them. Some niches might even be able to be broken further down into subcategories.
