Pretty Little Liars: Toby Cavanaugh [ISFJ]

Introverted Sensing (Si): In spite of the fact that Toby was practically a pariah for being implicated in the prank that blinded his step sister, he has a sentimental attachment to Rosewood. During the time jump, he and Alison are the only ones to stay behind as he’s managed to make a comfortable living there as a cop in spite of his past experiences. When Spencer proposes that he should want more out of life than what Rosewood wants to offer, he argues that she’s the one who wants more for him. His past experience with people colors how he sees them now - he refuses to see the girls as anything other than “Alison’s posse” until they show that they’re more than that, he still holds onto resentment towards Alison when she comes back.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe): Toby’s auxiliary function is in hiding for most of the beginning of the show when he comes back to Rosewood after having been in juvie for taking the blame for blinding Jenna. The reputation that this perceived crime has given him visibly takes a toll on him. Despite how Jenna treats him at times, he still feels an obligation to take care of her though he is not the one who caused her to become blind and for the sake of keeping up appearances. He himself is a victim of A’s manipulations as half of the reason he’s willing to work for “A” - other than to protect Spencer - is because A offers him information on his other’s supposed suicide in exchange for working for him. Before his relationship with Spencer, he finds a kindred spirit in fellow ISFJ Emily and manages to befriend her in spite of his reputation and helps her to come out, being an emotional and impartial ear for her. As he gets to know Spencer more, he shows this caring nature to her as well before they pursue a relationship together.

Introverted Thinking (Ti): Toby makes decisions dictated by his own personal logic - he sees being a helper for A as a way to help protect Spencer and the other girls as well as eventually joining the police force because it’s what “they do when they’re tired of watching people they love feel unprotected”. Though Toby has to process information before he makes observations, they are usually astute ones such as when Alison appeals to him while she’s in jail about knowing what it feels like to be in a cage for something he didn’t do before he reminds her “But I also remember whose words put me in that cage. Do you?” He’s the first to question Andrew being A after the police arrest Andrew because it doesn’t make sense that he would leave such overwhelming evidence lying around.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): When evidence and clues are laid out in front of him, Toby is able to jump to what appears to be the most logical conclusion at the time (Spencer presents a scenario of what could have happened at the lodge fire involving Cece and he retorts “Is there any reason to think she’s NOT A?”) Given his past experience and history with Spencer, once it’s brought up that there’s a possibility something is “off”, Toby is the one to ultimately help the liars get to the bottom of it during the finale (The Spencer he knows would always write notes in the books she was reading, this book she gave me has no notes. What if…?). However, he needs help to be led to this conclusion.

Retype: My argument for Ni/Se in particular was weak as I look back on the series. Si/Ne fits Toby way more.

Pretty Little Liars

So I didn't understand why the end of this show hit me so hard. Yeah I'm usually bummed for a few days after I finish the series but this is worse I'm almost full depression. Then today I realized why. I started watching this show in 2010 that was 7 years ago and my 1st year of high school. The Liars were there through my entire high school years and it almost felt like I was their friend for that 45 minutes a week they were on I didn't have to think about the stupid shit happening in my life. And what I thought were big huge deals were not at all compared to now... ADULTING SUCKS. So I thought I'd have them and the mystery and chaos and all that for a little while longer to get me through my wedding and my early 20s but now I just have reruns and it's not the same. I don't think I have ever cried for a tv show finale so hard. Like I went through all of that with them and now it's gone. "This feels like the end of something" really really got me sobbing like full on ugly crying. This was more than a show it was my "glory days" of high school. Spencer, Emily, Hannah, Alison, and Aria I will miss you guys thank you for the best years of my life!!!
