GO GO HORDIKA RANGERS
A less traumatic approach to the Toa Hordika redesign
Oh boy, where to start? Since I had alot going behind the scenes redesigning these. Well lets start with me having an idea to basically having the Rahi be like Power Rangers' helmet motive. So did a research on their Rahi, personality, profession, etc.
So ended up being: Tiger (Vakama), Shark (Nokama), Snake (Matau), Owl (Nuju), Bull (Onewa), and Boar (Whenua) (Was thinking of mole at first but somehow the final design makes it look more like a tapir-ish boar than a mole). Then had an idea to incorporate their Metru masks as their helmets' lower half, which then made me realize that pretty much their Hordika masks are just "Elongated Face, with Horizontal Markings". So had to get a bit creative with that.
Then had to design their silhouettes/bodytypes since, might as well. So scoured their set heights from photos and building instructions. Ended up with having their Turaga forms as the main height reference and then mixed up with their Metru Height.
Also designed custom Hordika chest pieces, which then prompts me to scour every toa team ever (+Bohrok and the Kals, cause why not).
So yes, its a lot of work. I have no idea why I do this to myself.

Toa Hordika pack sleeping together.
Tumblr media
I had this idea when I remembered Matau saying something along the lines of "I better be with my pack-team!" And thought they would look lovely all snuggled together like actual rahi lmao
That was far from happening tho, they were very dysfunctional during that time 😵‍💫

I know that out-of-universe, Roodaka is sexualized as hell because her toy model was built like that and because of how she was animated in the movie.
But in-universe? In the books, there's no physical or romantic attraction from Vakama for her. What starts his interest is her wielding her power and confidence. (And having no obvious affiliation to Makuta.) For a character as mired in self-doubt and desire for safety as he is in that time, seeing that combination when he's emotionally vulnerable would tempt him.
Then Roodaka does directly manipulate and tempt him with the promise of power as a way to fullfil his duty on his own.

After arriving in Metru Nui, the Turaga began to occasionally call each of the Toa ‘brother’ or ‘sister’, partially an acknowledgment of their past lives, partially to acknowledge the success that the Toa Nuva have earned, and largely as camaraderie in the bond that they share as Toa or former Toa.
Tahu outwardly acts like it’s only right that he’d be addressed as such, trying to make others believe that he accepts it in stride, but inwardly, he is humbled by the acknowledgment. The Turaga see through his bluster and appreciate his humility.
Onua is outwardly quite humble and appreciative when it happens, but inwardly, he doesn’t quite see himself as being worthy of being addressed by such wise beings as the Turaga, who he holds in high esteem, so he usually comes off as a little bashful when he responds in kind.
The Turaga started being reluctant to call Gali ‘sister,’ largely because she reacts to the title, by pushing herself a little too hard to prove that she is worthy of the acknowledgment. She once to stayed up all night for two days while repairing an aqueduct in Ga-Metru, and when she could barely keep awake during a meeting with the Turaga, everyone immediately decided that Nokama should not call Gali sister anymore.
Kopaka typically glances at whoever called him this and slightly nods, sort of a polite acknowledgment, but those who know him best, especially Nuju, know that he is actually quite touched by the endearment, and he has to be stoic to keep up appearances. Whenua, having the best hearing, has multiple times heard Kopaka whisper ‘thank you, brother’ in response to Nuju or Vakama.
Takanuva started out being quite flustered when he was called brother by any of the elders, still being unused to being called brother even by the other Toa, but as he grew used to his powers and his responsibilities, he began to accept it in stride. He still won’t return the title, since he still uncomfortable with the idea of calling any of the Turaga by that term, but he is still moved by the respect they show him.
Lewa was delighted when they started calling him brother, But he’s also somewhat amused, often laughing when they call him that. To Lewa, it’s still difficult to imagine these wise old beings as Toa heroes, so he can’t always keep himself from laughing. Even so, he never fails to respectfully return the honorific.
The Toa Mahri have varying degrees of acceptance of the honorific. Jaller is proud to carry the title, and Hahli is eager to prove herself worthy of the honorific (though not as much as Gali). Kongo is a bit smug about it, Nuparu takes it in stride, and Hewkii tends to get sort of ‘aw, shucks’ about it. All of them are somewhat muted in their response, mostly because Nuju was the first to call them brother and sister. They all understand that Nuju calls them that as much as he does in memory of Matoro, and his regret that he never got to see his friend as a Toa and call him ‘brother’ in person. The Mahri learned the bird speak for Brother and Sister, and they always call Nuju brother right back.
And the Turaga universally agreed never to call Pohatu ‘brother’ again shortly after the first few times. After then, he began exclusively referring to the Turaga as brother or sister, always with extreme enthusiasm that the elders often find exasperating and often demanding fist bumps from any Turaga he encounters for days after. Most of them just quietly stopped calling him that, except for Onewa, who continued occasionally calling him brother when he felt he had earned it, but after Pohatu found out that Turaga Dume had been a Toa, the seven had an official meeting where they unanimously voted not to call Pohatu brother anymore. Matau still occasionally calls him that, though, because he personally thinks it’s fucking hilarious when Pohatu tries to fist bump Nuju.

Revamped my least favorite Toa team of all time, the Toa Hordika I'll try to do individual renders sometime soon, but for now its just the group shot I tried to keep these inline with their normal part count, and tried to use only official building techniques, most of them ended up being 50ish parts, so a bit higher than their official sets My main problem with the Hordika has always been the identical builds, and the hardly existent play features They all have at least one thing unique about them that the other members don't have (left to right) Whenua- shorter legs than the rest of the team, and two Hordika arms Nuju- unique arm build, tallest member, shoulder mounted Rhotuka Launcher, and the only member with a ranged weapon. He doesnt have a Hordika arm (shares this with Onewa) to make up for this, he has two spinners Vakama- a unique arm mounted Rhotuka Launcher, with his flame sword attached to the rip cord Onewa- along with no Hordika arm, Onewa is the only member that has spinners built into his biceps. He also has a unique function that relates to his animal theming, turning the gear on his back tosses his head back and fourth. Nokama- She probably has the most unique build, along with her mermaid/legless appearance, she's the only one that has a Hordika arm not being used as an arm. She has a fun play function so you can turn a gear on her shoulder, and she moves her arms in a swimming movement. Matau- Matau is pretty close to his normal build, but he has the longer legs that most of the team has, and an additional limb on the left side of his body. Along with giving them all unique traits, most of the team gains an animal themeing, and the secondary color from their respective Visorak (animal inspo, left to right)
Whenua- Gorilla Nuju- Barbarian Archer (only non-animal) Vakama- Salamander (realistically wanted to make him more similar to his Metru counter part, and I just assigned him salamander after the fact) Onewa- Bull Nokama- Mermaid (fish?) Matau- Mantis

Even though all the male Toa on each team have basically the same body type in the movies, I like how the animation gives each of them a very different kind of physical presence. Onewa and Whenua read as having more bulk and weight while Matau and Nuju seem much more lithe and acrobatic, ditto for their Nuva counterparts.
And they get kind of weird with it for the Hordika, which is also fun. Nuju's still mostly upright, Whenua has a gorilla-ish gait, and Onewa kind of... skitters, like some kind of bug or lizard.

You ever notice how of all the characters Roodaka's pissed off, it usually seems like the Air Toa specifically have it out for her the most?
She's the reason Nidhiki got stuck in the Dark Hunters hanging out with an idiot like Krekka for the rest of his life, Matau hated his time as a Hordika the most out of the rest of his team, and Iruni came to Metru Nui with the rest of the Rahaga for the express purpose of killing Roodaka for what she did to them.
I'm not sure if this is an unintentional detail Greg accidentally wrote in, or if Roodaka just specifically goes out of her way to screw over any Toa of Air she comes across.

Kaazhri Hordika of Plasma
Tumblr media
Kaazhri, for a long time they felt like they weren't a "normal" toa ever since they where born. Always felt like they where closer to nature, especially Rahi. In the newly formed planet of Spherus Magna, many things have come about. The new planet is much more harsh than the Matoran Universe, so many people have come together to form a collective they called The Hordika Hive. Individuals who intentionally turn themselves into Hordika for various reasons. For Kaazhri, it's to feel truly like themselves to feel whole. Hearing the tales, and risks, they sought out the Hive and where welcomed in opened arms for they knew that Kaazhri was a like minded individual.
At this point in time, going Feral was a 80% chance of happening after the transformation. They knew the risks, they wanted this ever since they got their mask and became a "proper Toa". After a few days of preparation, they began the transformation.
ever since that day, they never felt more alive

Idea I Had at like 3AM: Toa Metru/Turaga Were-Hordika AU
Like they turn into Hordika in certain times, like under a full moon?
Yes, please
IMAGINE that each village has a "Guardian" they tell stories of and the Toa Mata hear about and SEE these guardians, beastly, wild things that protect the Matoran, but are very much "attack first, ask questions later." Takua runs into these a fair few times. It's only after he encounters one up close and personal, maybe encounters a Hordika-ified Vakama at the dead of night, and realizes that THE TURAGA ARE THE GUARDIANS. He knows, and Vakama knows he knows, but Takua says nothing, because he's a Chronicler, not a snitch
And maybe he does because, "Our Turaga can kill you"

Matau's teeth are small and thin, almost transparent. They are many, so many, so sharp, and though he's grown out of it a long time ago he still sometimes thinks of biting them down on the first hand he can find and sinking them deep and painful until whoever crossed him screams in anguish. The scar on his shoulder is a dotted oval bitten by much larger ones, but unlike the burn mark running along the entirety of his arm he regards it fondly, with a slight blush.
Nokama's teeth are large and triangular, divided in two rows: one attached to her jaw and skull, one held back a little, to propel forward in case she needs to. They seldom stain, and when one breaks it grows back at almost alarming speed; she disguises their molts as findings from the depths of the waters, ashamed of their abnormality. She tends to long closed wounds accidentally pierced by talons with a certain devotion, the same she applies to the kind scratches on her back.
Nuju's fangs peek through his lips only slightly - just enough to accentuate his frown under the right light. He still has little punctures from his time adjusting to their presence, when their sharpness would dig into his mouth by accident at the slightest change of expression. He is grateful the claw marks on his thigh are always hidden under his clothes by default, since such a grace can't be bestowed on the scarred bite on his nose.
Onewa's tusks pull his lip forward in a way that makes him seem judgmental (more than usual, that is). They're large, sharp, taking much more space than the rest of his teeth, and yet for some strange curious coincidence they make his smile wider and less cruel than it could be. His middle is a battlefield of shallowly dug trenches filled in with chalk; he traces them absentmindedly with his calloused fingers at times, mind unreadable, halfway between annoyed and flustered.
Whenua's canines are small, only roughly the length of the rest of his teeth. The hollow triangles of space the create between molars and fronts gives him a strange air, at once innocent and subtly aggressive. Long nails have left thin lines on his nape, ones he's never really seen - stitched by time like the sores on his feet that once dug through the ground and the wounds left by brethren out of themselves, imperfect mirrors of those he bestowed upon them in turn.
Vakama's canines are too long for his liking, upper and lower ones curving to lock together giving him the appearance of some kind of dragon. He's learned to speak through them loud and clear and all but perfect by now, but it was quite the arduous journey. The scars on his chest, far away from his heartlight, tell him to remember himself: it is thanks to those that he can shiver at the memory of rope burns around his biceps as he grazes their afterimages, forever pressed on him.

Silly idea:
For the Rahaga and the Toa Hordika each, how much did they like receiving pets? (Pets as in affectionate physical gestures like scritching their head.) And who would they allow to pet them?

Okay, hear me out.
When the Rahaga were first learning how to do what they could to save rahi from the Visorak (and likely in general), they had to have learned quite a lot from failing before figuring out the techniques that work best. Best example: Kualus learning how to do birdspeak. But...
What if they developed a secret "hunting" technique?
Imagine this: the Toa Hordika helping the Rahaga as they're also trying to figure things out before Vakama's betrayal. They come across a rahi that's hiding in a spot that would get exposed or destroyed by the Visorak, and it refuses to come out even with their best techniques. One of the Rahaga suggests using "the secret hunting technique", and the Toa Hordika watch in fascination and confusion as whichever Rahaga volunteers to perform it...
And it becomes the goofiest dance they've ever seen. They can't believe anyone would even dance so strangely on purpose. Worse yet, they can't even believe it's even working! How is this working?!
Whenua is now questioning how this technique has the effect it does on rahi, and I would not be surprised if he didn't try to learn how to do it himself!
...Matau totally got hypnotized by the dance as well, tell me not 😂
(Inspiration for this random idea came from this Amphibia scene here.)

A theme I just noticed in Toa teams; their forms change at least once
Like-
Toa Metru became the Toa Hordika (even if it's not permanent I'm counting it?
Toa Mata became the Toa Nuva
Toa Ignika became the Toa Mahri
Is this a common occurrence for a Toa team or?
(slowly glances at Ackar, Kiina, Gresh (maybe) Berix, Tarix and Vastus to see if this was ever planned for them)
