im changing my desired name agin i think, itll be arty. it just fits me better than my name before and it feels like me.

i will not be changing the blog name itself but ill change the bio! i know nobodys probably gonna see this post but it feels important to me! i also actively use they/them, xe/xey, and it/its! (he him is ok too but she/her isn’t preferred) my mom is probably gonna see this so hi mom :)

Lore:

Pomnis First Day: Pomni appeared behind everyone after the intro song messing it up. Jax got annoyed that they were going to have to redo the whole intro agine. Pomni freaked out before Caine showed her around the circus. Pomni saw the ‘exit’ before getting her name. Cain then did an adventure with Gloinks. Pomni, Jax, and Ragatha went to check on Kofmo while the others dealt with the Glonks after Zooble gets taken off by the Glonks. Pomni and the other 2 find out that Kofmo had abstracted. Pomni ran and left Ragatha behind, scared of the glitching, but she came back a little bit after, and after Ragatha asked for help, Pomni went to find Caine for help. Pomni found the ‘exit’ door, but tried to look for Caine a little bit more but when she couldn't she ended up going through the exit door thinking she might be able to find help for everyone if she got out. She ended up in the void before Cain teleported her back to the main room and fixed everything. Then Pomni had dinner, and after that, Pomni went to her room to freak out, ending up getting bothered by Jax before she could convince him she wasn't going to cry and was left alone

We start with Pomni starting this blog. She made friends with thepomniplush, hoodie-crew, phoenix-parentfriend, deadlysilence, ADHD (thattransdudeee) and has a perfectly normal time for 3 weeks and 4 days before she glitches for the first time. She tries to get Caine to help after this happens, but he doesn't know what to do since he can't un-glitch her since she's not glitching anymore. He just sends her off, not thinking too much of this. Pomni is scared about the glitching and is obviously in distress worried she might be abstracting even though she was ok mentally.

The next day, because of a music video, Pomni glitches another time. This time Caine takes it seriously and starts to actively work on trying to fix whatever is going on, he is working himself to exhaustion trying to juggle keeping up with his job to be the ringmaster of the circus and fix what was going on, he works nonstop. Everyone at this point after hearing what's happening to Pomni is avoiding her, for fear of getting whatever she has. The only 2 that will interact with her is Ragatha, but even Ragatha is being distant physically, only talking from a good distance away, and Caine who will still touch her and talk to her since he is not scared of what is happening because abstracting doesn't affect him. hoodie-crew Pomni asks for this worlds Pomnis Caine. When he shows up, he is obviously disheveled. Cain says he's tried everything he can think of, and nothing has been working. The code doesn't look wrong, and the error only happens to quickly find it in time. He gives a quick (fake) upbeat reply at the end, saying everything will be ok and disappears. hoodie-crew Caine comes to help this world's Pomni glitching/virus by making it cold, suggesting that cold keeps away the glitch/virus.

How does glitching feel:

"U-Uhmm... it feels like I got shocked by lightning... then everything feels fuzzy after and disorienting..." -Pomni

Pomni connects back to the multiverse again after a 5 day absence, saying her Caine had put up a barrier around the whole Circus so no one can get in or out of the Circus (any virus that touches the barrier gets shocked) Caine put Pomni in quarantine in a room that can change to what Pomni wants it to be. This is so she doesn't spread the virus since since Cain is worried that the virus is progressing pretty fast

(The basic room not changed to be anything)

Caine checks on Pomni once a day doing some tests on her to try and get rid of the virus. No matter how hard Pomni tried, she couldn't break the barrier, so she couldn't touch any of her friends. She reasoned that this is probably for the best, so Caine doesn't find out about her doing all this and so she won't hurt her friends by giving them the virus. At this point, Pomni is used to glitching. Pomni is acting irritable, and thepomniplush didn't realize it was really Pomni at first because she wasn't acting like her usual self.

Pomni and thepomniplush switch bodies for a bit by accident, but Paige tries to convince Pomni to let her stay in Pomnis body so that Pomni doesn't die from the Virus. Pomni doesn't like this idea not wanting her friend to get her and forces Paige out of her body after Paige tries to teleport away but can't because of the barrier

After Pomni realizes she might need to be alone again for the protection of all her friends, she glitches badly and becomes catatonic, and her eyes are permanently static as she cries static. Pomni wakes up after 2 days and has another breakdown about her friends getting hurt because of her, and after her breakdown, she felt tired and passed out the hoodie-crew.

Cain hasn't come around in 10 days

The lining ones are just the default pen and brush tools on SAI! I use the pen one for black and white stuff and the brush one for colored stuff, usually. As for the pencil one, I actually have three different ones I use more or less all at the same time? depending on what effect I need to give, but the main one is a brush tool with these settings!

Got around to answering this ask too late, seems like 😂 I didn’t especially mind it as a concept, but I’ve always thought Miruko didn’t really have anything to teach Baku that would move him along on the path Hori seems to have picked for him? So there’s that. As things stand my ideal interning for Baku if I had to pick between pro heroes I already knew was Endeavour himself, so!!! Things unexpectedly turned out good for me haha

I don’t like the idea of the shovel talk in general when applied to krbk to be fair, especially since they’re all friends with both Kiri and Baku so it feels weird to me that they’d go around assuming either would willingly hurt the other? The one the most inclined to talk like that to any of his own friends is Baku himself, imho hahaha but if I had to pick someone to be overprotective in this scenario and pick Baku over Kiri between the two of them, then probably Jirou at this point since she’s canon friends with Baku and has pretty much never spoken to Kiri on page

Depends on if I’ll start shipping it again in the future! Right now my only ships for Kaminari are with Jirou, Momo and Shinsou, so if it’ll happen it won’t be any time soon? unless Hori decides to hit me over the head with unexpected bkkm feels that lean more towards romantic than sibling-like, which is what all their interactions have felt like for me lately

As I said, I’m thinking about it! The manga has been nice this past few weeks, but we won’t know for sure until it’ll happen. I ship more or less anything in hq? Actually? I used to have more specific tastes back when I was active in the fandom, but getting out of that slowly brought me back to just appreciating most of all relationships in the manga~  the only main ship I’m not much into is asa////noya? for some reason? but everything else is game. So I guess I’m into most of all rare pairs too, though nothing too specific! It’s not like I spend much time thinking about hq or engaging with the fandom anymore, ngl - the only ship I still read fics for is kyohaba, so I guess you might consider it the only ship I actually have a bias for, atm hahaha

Thursdays go 3D

I woke up but it was heading towards 8am but good thing I could sleep in so that was nice and had a late breakfast as planned I then had zumba by 9am that was fun and tiring then came home to flop after morning tea, then to see Don  made lunch by 12:30 and had lunch up until 2pm Lisa came to pick me up and we Chromatisied the way there and back on the way home we had a juice on the way home and I had the rest while watching Neighbours. We had fun putting together and taking photos of each room through the 3d glasses which was fun I am going to put out the word to my friends including Gem, Jem, Pheobe or other friends I know. 

Sorry I havent been keeping up with my Boredom days since COVID but let’ s just say its easing and everything is opening like my gym, dance studio and Eric street gym to get back half my life which is a good thing aboout my weight and staying active and busy throughout the day yesterday was fun to with my singing lessons we Zoe and I are working on hard song because it features a Korean pop band and thats the only dificulty is singing in Korean Zoe told me she would break it down into sound and pronounciation of the Korean lyrics so we can get it down soI can’t wait for that next Wednesday and to tell her about Glowing Rooms where I went with Lisa today. 

Right now I am winding down and reflecting on my day and how fun it was with Lisa so I had my Manta sleep/mind & body exercise on my watch, made dinner I went to the toilet and I saw my period was fading in to start my hunger strikes again made and now already had my frozen meal dinner, 2 pieces of Roma’s bread into toast and peanut butter, hot chocolate and grapes because I also haven't had my afternoon tea which I did also with Lisa which was a juice the time now is 10:41 I am waiting for 30 minutes to digest my dinner to eat my period snacks which I shouldn't have.

I did my ski facial routine which was a mask I did it all in order without flannel over the face I guess that’s ok I did have a shower but that was only for washing my hair and I blew dried it for something to do before Manta Sleep I am currently working on my book and blog killing time before I can eat agin might have some water first though, I also posted my photos from Glowing rooms which I Amy have enticed some of my friends when they see it to come with me for many times for me to go again or for future adventures I could go on in my life which I am looking forward to in the future.

Dander Still Up. Drowning in Great Dismal Swamp. Film at Eleven.

Maybe this is the last in my series of dander-raising essays, as recent national and world events have most definitely left so many of us with a raging case of TDS. (Trump Derangement Syndrome, look it up it's a thing). So many damned browser tabs open. So little time. Or maybe not. Who knows. Where are all these suicides coming from? My editor keeps telling me, "don't let it make you paralytic." Hey, I'm trying. Just sensing a kind of coalescence in all the corruption our bloggers keep writing about. How do we even differentiate these activities across so many sectors of society. We were going to see our swamp drained. He promised. But instead there's just this big brand new bodacious cesspool. There it is in all the revolving-door sectors. Federal government. Private sector. Health care non-profits and even academia. Just read back over recent weeks and months of this, your favorite blog. The coalescence of corruption is certainly made easier by our enjoyment of a remarkable and possibly quite barmy Confabulator-in-Chief. He's just sort of paved the way for what one pundit recently characterized as a sort of race-to-the-bottom. No corruption (cone of silence? nifty office furniture? wipe our environmental health? Big Pharma gets another bye?) is too small. Or, of course, too large. None of this is terribly new, just the way it's all melded into what the cancer biologists call a syncytium. There are no winners and losers in all this. Just a lot of organelles swimming around and causing havoc at our expense. Just a bunch of top-level narcissists and then, under them, a phalanx of careerist stronzi streaming out of academic backwaters and think tanks to grab their fifteen minutes of ... what? Surely not fame, unless you're looking for a spot on an SNL cold open. Microphone time maybe? Let's call out a few of them. Fifteen minutes, max, by the way. The turn-over in government, especially, in the federal executive, is many times that of any previous administration. Everybody seems to be trying to find their own inner Scaramucci. For now, it seems, it's just all one great big scandal. Adam Serwer in The Atlantic: "there is only one scandal." While the Chest Thumper-in-Chief runs around doing what he does best--sullying the western world and laying down cover for his army of swampy miscreants--the careerists continue to run up a debt whose bill will surely come true. Of course by then, so many of them will have cashed out. Guess who'll be left to pay the tab. You, me, our sickest, our poorest, and Mother Earth. In the private sector it may take years for the ins and the outs to get in and then back out. But of late in both Big Pharma and in Health IT, both the revolving door and the Invasion of the Body Snatchers (aka baleful effect of activist investors and hedge funds) have taken their toll and we pick up the pace. Most recent casualty: Bush family scion and alleged wife-beater Jonathan B, thrown out of possibly the most innovative, but not quite profitable enough, athenahealth EHR company he once founded. Offed just now by the Elliott organization, which is headed up in turn by ultra-right political donor Peter Singer. (Here and here and pretty much everywhere--don't get stuck in his cross-hairs.) Ah, yes, these are the glory days for the Big Families. Donorship gets you a whole party of your own. The Prince-DeVos family, the Koch family, the Uihlein family, the Mercer family. And Las Vegas Gambling Tycoon Sheldon Adelson, who almost single-handedly handed Binyamin Netanyahu an unearned win in Jerusalem. Their common goal: effacement of government, Ron Reagan's great "problem child," in favor of its replacement the Great Dismal Swamp.  (In fact much of the real GDS, out of North Carolina, was actually bought up by Betsy DeVos's brother Erik to train Blackwater mercenaries.)  So now, on to the Great Dismal Swamp of outsourced everything. Outsourcing, along with the revolving door and the Anechoic Effect, these form the inner dynamic, the secret history of what's happening now. Outsource security. Outsource VA health care. (See my earlier blog on a secretary's attempt to resist that.) Outsource public education. Outsource, or at least deregulate, clinical trials of unproven drugs. Privatize, don't shade your eyes (apologies to Tom Lehrer). (Note that in the course of all this privatizing the common weal, these Big Dogs not infrequently can turn on each other. Singer turns on Bush. Koch the Elder turns on Koch the Younger. The dollar is king and the beat goes on and Throw Momma From the Train.) Other major features of this secret history:

The Scorching of the Earth. Both literally (health consequences of climate change), and figuratively: the flaming rhetoric of the careerists. The most glaring recent example, albeit outside of our health purview, White House National Trade Council Director and temporary-in-from-the-cold academic Peter Navarro, awarding "a special place in hell" to Canada.  (Canada?!?) Why? Because it dared to cross his new boss. Cross the boss, thump the chest. Ten points for the thumper, zero points for the country. We'll learn later this year, and again in 2020, whether there's enough of the vaunted "base" left to be snookered by all this guff. The chest-thumpers may discover a special place in hell meted out to folks closer to home.

The Swamp-Ooze of the Careerists. Navarro's one high placed example. Another newly high-placed with a more direct impact on health care, and also flaming the air waves, is National Economic Council Director and former CNBC correspondent Larry Kudlow. In the recent presidential travels Kudlow did not speak cosmologically of heaven and hell, but only politically. He called Canada's measured response "betrayal." On health insurance, he's agin it. It kills jobs, per Mr. Kudlow. And he ought to know how things really work, right? In 2007 he famously predicted the continued success of an earlier deregulatory GOP economic policy suite in that once-great organ National Review. William Buckley turned over in his grave. The headline read: "Bush Boom Continues." The following tag line: "you can't call it a recession." (Emphasis his.) The date: December 10, 2007. (Despite which, get well quick Larry. Maybe find a less stressful job would help.)

Health and the Environment. Ah, yes, and in environmental health we have Scott Pruitt heeding HMV while lining his own pockets and lobbying for his wife's Chick-fil-A franchise (honest I can't make this stuff up), all the while dumbing down any expertise on health. This dumbing down and anti-science motif pervades the Great Dismal Swamp. Never before has there been such a dearth of scientific, pedagogical, or health expertise in any of the departments that so direly need those capabilities. Interestingly, the small-bore corruption of these characters seems more prominent in the upper, Pruitt-like, echelons than in the Small Fry. Or are we just not hearing about the little guys?

Lesser Careerists. You can't have a syncytium without both big and little organelles. The little guys are actually among the more damaging, as they tend to be true believers with claimed expertise that goes poof when examined closely. Among the most famously wrong-minded recent ones we have the Press Secretary herself, Ms. Sanders, who from the depths of her health policy experience pronounced last fall that “I can’t think of anything worse than having the government be more involved in your health care instead of less involved.” Oh, Miss Sarah, I can. Even more peculiar is the role of the rather more obscure Ms. Katy Talento, of the White House Domestic Policy Council. She gets to act as conduit and house pundit for the new HHS secretary Alex Azar. It's fascinating. In several easily-reached venues she's described, by self or others, as "an epidemiologist." Harvard's master of science (not MPH) degree in epidemiology and public health can be obtained, as she did, in something between three and twelve months. Not exactly a board certification. Then she went on to build her career in ideological rightist causes and organizations, including anti-abortion campaigns and one notable set of pronouncements on the supposed link of birth control to miscarriage. Came the time for Azar to prep his new boss on last month's Big Speech on reducing drug costs, Talento broadcast the news that "no ox would be gored." Said she, "This is a fearless president and he doesn't know or care why things have always been done. It's not like your typical Republican authorizing committee that protects this model that they helped write for decades...." Wait, one little thing. It didn't happen. The big play available, as I said in a previous post, would've been having Medicare bargain for prices. Instead--and clearly Azar could've tried and failed to get this--the Caregiver-in-Chief declared that drug prices in the US should come down by having other countries pay more. What so strange about this is not merely the absurdity of such a statement, coming from a former Pfizer top exec. It's the fact that here's a lower-level careerist who went straight into RNC speech writing and working for a right wing southern Republican (Tillis, NC), Hold the phone. Among all the young staffers willing to sell their souls to get the Big Show on their CVs--don't they know it's a shabby little show?--what about the wonderful lady who dissed the ailing John McCain as inessential (he's just now incredibly essential), because, after all, he's going to die soon? Out the door she went, but of course her Republican friends got her a soft landing. Her name is Kelly Sadler, a real comer. Or goner.

The Rise of the Druggists. Last but not least, part of the secret history that, now I see it, has really got the dander way up, is how in health care and health policy, Pharma's now fully the tail-that-wagged-the-dog. CVS is moving into health care--see Dr. Poses's recent posting on just how well that organization understands their responsibilities. Actually having pharmaceutical and pharmacy folks elbowing out health care professionals who understand professionalism, it's not a new thing. Philadelphia Big Donor Leonard Abramson founded U.S. Healthcare and made a mint when he discovered how easy it was to make Managed Care actually Denied Care, then, with this proof-of-concept, cashing out and selling to Aetna. That goes way back. More recently, though, the pace of They Come at Night has picked up, viz. the firing of David Shulkin MD at the VA and the hiring of Alex Azar at HHS. These clearly result from both the privatization motive and the Pharma tail wagging the dog. At least two of the three branches of the federal government understand the business model of Pharma. They don't come anywhere near understanding the professional ethics of doctors--even while relying on their personal physicians to exercise such ethics.

Business ethics in medicine, as practiced by Pharma, have been laid out in many, many places in this blog. I and others have laid the blame for a big chunk of the opiate crisis at the door of Purdue pharma and the Sackler family. I regret to remind that the early Sacklers were physicians. But they were first and foremost business folk, possessed of a truly novel business model, which may be called outright dissimulation. (For a fascinating and harrowing description of one high-functioning Ivy-League opiate addict's experiences at Yale, with all its Sackler money and Oxy pills traded on the New Haven Green, see this Guardian piece.) Actually, I've talked to a lot of pharma execs and they're often quite ethical and responsible. They have their hands full fighting off the PBM companies. They get singled out for their K Street spending, but many of them actually have rather low budgets for that, the recent Novartis scandal notwithstanding. Other execs blush at this Novartis nonsense and want nothing to do with it. I say all this mainly to point out some dreadful outliers. It's not just the brand name drug makers, either. Teva, the Israeli generics giant, is allegedly a real problem. As I write this, good old Ron Wilson, the Wisconsin Republican who just keeps on giving his gifts, is blocking his Ranking Member Claire McCaskill from obtaining information Teva's contributions to the opioid crsis. He's saying leave it to the courts.

OK, as I just hinted, I agree with you. None of this recent stuff is really secret. Not even really novel. It's just coalesced like never before into into a dismal swamp. (Orwellian doublespeak: yes, we've seen the swamp drained. Of what? What was he promising to drain? Yes, drained, if that meant getting rid of people ("Deep State"?) who know stuff. So people who don't know stuff can get on with the business of ripping us off.) Hence in my current rant I just wanted to point to those commonalities that are, right about now, more egregious than ever. Honestly, they are. When the history is written, it will prove me right. Oh, wait, Alexander Hamilton wrote it already, hundreds of years ago.

When a man unprincipled in private life desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper, possessed of considerable talents, having the advantage of military habits—despotic in his ordinary demeanour—known to have scoffed in private at the principles of liberty—when such a man is seen to mount the hobby horse of popularity—to join in the cry of danger to liberty—to take every opportunity of embarrassing the General Government & bringing it under suspicion—to flatter and fall in with all the non sense of the zealots of the day—It may justly be suspected that his object is to throw things into confusion that he may “ride the storm and direct the whirlwind.”

Lulie Halstead on Millennials and the wine market, at MUST 2017

Lulie Halstead of Wine Intelligence gave an interesting talk on Millennials, and whether or not we make too much of them in marketing discussions. ‘It’s a topic we often get asked to speak about,’ she said. Millennials are people born between 1981 and 1995, which means that they are currently 21-35 years old. The previous demographic groups are Gen X (1961-1980, aged 36-55) and Boomers (1945-1960, aged 56-71).

Are Millennials really all that different?

Lulie cited some research suggesting that when it comes to making travel decisions, Millennials prefer instant freebies to reward points – it’s about the now. That sounds pretty Millennial. When they are planning travel, 59% use online reviews (again, very Millennial), but 35% go to travel agent or specialist, which sounds much more Gen X or Boomer. Maybe they are not that different. And when Millennials were asked why would they recommend a hotel, the second most important factor was a comfy bed!

In terms of media consumption, we hear they don’t watch TV (they don’t even have one), and they never listen to radio or read newspapers. They are glued to their smartphones and digest media this way. Or do they?

In a recent study in the USA, it turns out that the average American watches 4 h 59 min TV a day (this sounds a scarily big number). Millennials watch 4 h 8 min of TV/day, and this rises when they get a family. So they aren’t all that different.

Lulie then switched gear and introduced four macro trends that have emerged from Wine Intelligence’s research. These are dubbed:

Well being

Engage

Express  (all about me – how do I express myself?)

Connect (how do we connect with others?)

Within each category of trends, they have identified a subset of individual trends, and these make for interesting reading.

There are three trends in well being:

Exclude (mainly in food and drink) when we take stuff out that is naturally occurring such as calories or gluten – lots of snack products in particular are all about excluding stuff.

Enhance – when extra stuff is added in. As an example, she gives ‘anti agin’ which is a gin enhanced with 90g of drinkable collagen.

Mindfulness – this is about us as a culture understanding that our mental well being is really important. She gave the example of Tesco who are trialling quiet checkouts for people who find the whole process a bit intimidating. They have also been working with the autism society to get an understanding about what it must be like to go through the shopping experience if you are autistic.

Engage has three trends:

Obsession – this is where producers, suppliers and brand owners dedicated and obsessive about the product they make. They typically have a dedication to being brilliant at one thing only. An example is a grab and go fast food restaurant in California that only sells 11 different types of bacon. There are egg restaurants, and lasagne restaurants. We want to find people or businesses who are are brilliant at one thing, in a world of massively confusing complication and choice.

Fusion – this is about merging of product categories and services to bring types and styles together. For example, there is a white chocolate Kit Kat fused with sake that is sold in Japan. We love the idea of seeing new and trying new.

Activate – this is a way of engaging and activating the target audience beyond the purchase experience, and an example would be something that the Colombia outdoor sporting goods company has done. They have added extra uses to the price tag, such as a metal tag that turns into a water purifier, or a fishing hook, or a mini tool.

Connect has three:

Exchange – a good example of this is e neighbour, where for $2.50 your neighbour can take in your parcel. This creates mini hubs of individuals who, in being paid in exchange for a bit of their time and storage space, will take your parcel in.

Reduce – reducing waste and packaging. Lulie described a Dutch fruit supplier whose sweet potatoes get their branding and packaging simply by being stamped with edible ink.

Community – how we interact with those around us. In craft beer there was an initiative called ‘cream of the craft’ where for a week 50 breweries made beer using an identical recipe.

And Express has its own three also:

Effortless – technology is helping us to do things with less effort. Amazon Go are trillaing a store in Seattle in which an app recognized your movements in the store, you pick your items and just walk out with them, and you are automatically billed without even having to self scan.

Instant – in some ways, this is in opposition to ‘reduce’, and an example would be an instant ice tray with six pre filled sections and a foil top, for those who find filling an ice tray from the sink too much of a chore.

Individual – this is having and making products ourselves, and an example would be a store where you can make your own individualized blended drink or food item.

How important are these trends to the different demographic groups?

It turns out that mindfulness and community are significantly less important for Millennials, while individual and activate are significantly more important to them.

But it could be that it is just that they are younger, and people in their 20s have different priorities in their lives? Younger people are more hedonistic. That’s the point of being younger and it’s why we grow up. Yes, the world has changed, but these changes are more to do with life stage than being a magic millennial. ‘Younger people behave more hedonistically,’ says Lulie. ‘It’s the way it works.’

How does this apply to wine?

Lulie cited two numbers:

27 million – the number of Millennial regular wine drinkers in the USA (out of 95 million overall)

24 million – the number of regular Millennial wine drinkers in China (out of 48 million)

What is important for these Millennials when it comes to wine?

Mindfulness – they associate wine with relax, reward, authentic, genuine, special, treat It isn’t about high energy, it’s about sharing, caring and expertise. Being authentic and natural matters.

Obsession – devoted to you. They love it when retailers or sommeliers are brilliant at something, with a narrow focus. They love it when people say let me guide you here because I am really good at something

Fusion. Mix it up. Put ice cubes in wine, add elderflower cordial – this is how real people think about wine. Millennials like a bit of a challenge and a point of difference

 Enhance. Add it in. Extra protein, a few minerals: who knows what supplements or enhancements you can put in

 Activate. Include me. How can you include me? What can you do to activate?

Wine Intelligence did a wine label study in Australia, with a range of stylised labels ranging from ‘Cartoon Retro’ through to ‘Prestigious’. The Millennials don’t find the most distinctive labels appealing. They want their wine to look like wine; they want to trust it. This is seen in in multiple markets with different age groups. ‘Maybe there is a myth that our Millennials love things that are cool funky and trendy,’ says Lulie.

Of course, these demographic groups are merely constructs. They aren’t real. But they are helpful because they organize our thinking, and enable us to make something that would otherwise be very nebulous and hard to pin down a lot easier to grapple with. But as Lulie explained, we have to be cautious that we don’t get too carried away by concepts such as Millennials.

Portland Resistance 2017: Bikes and YouTube stars

What does mass resistance look like in 2017 Portland? The marches we saw over this weekend were the largest since the Vietnam War, unless of course, you follow “alternate facts”. If you look at the history of resistance in the world, it is constantly changing. Resistance must conform to the technology and public spaces of that period. Martin Luther King used television and the American Revolution used pamphlets.

But what will mass resistance look like in a city of highly informed people with access to more technology in their pocket than NASA used to get to the moon? Combine that with a city that has been building more public spaces with bicycle, pedestrian, and transit access faster (although not fast enough) than any other time in the history of cities. Over the next four years we will find out what this resistance looks like but here are a couple of thoughts on what could be important to these new movements. \

Phoenix has 2.5 times our population yet we had 5 times the number of marchers. There is no place for 100,000 people to go in Phoenix and no way for them all to get there.

Just for a minute imagine if every one of those 100,000 people who attended Portland’s Saturdays march drove by themselves. Talk about disruptive! It simply would have been impossible. Also imagine that Portland had kept its highway instead of building Waterfront Park. There would have been no place for protesters to go. Phoenix has 2.5 times our population yet we had 5 times the number of marchers. There is no place for 100,000 people to go in Phoenix and no way for them all to get there.

I believe that in the resistance of the 21st century the bicycle will play a crucial role.

People bicycling to large marches are simply the most efficient and easiest way to get the most number of people to attend. The tools that we have developed during Pedalpalooza are the tools we will need to use to create effective resistance. Shift’s Pedalpalooza — a month-long festival of 300+ free bike events by and for the entire community — has been the training ground for a huge number of potential future march leaders. The Naked Bike Ride has taught us how to lead a huge group of people and the BBQ grills many have built onto their bikes can be used to feed those marchers. The sound systems we have built on cargo bikes will amplify the music that transforms a park or street into a place of resistance. With this background, the marches of the future will not be monotonous shouting, “whose streets, our streets” over and over and over again, because that can be both annoying and uninspiring. These marches will be creative expressions that are engaging and thought provoking built of the back of the bike fun movement.

Technology is a double-sided blade. At its best, it allows for the diffusion of power. A dude can start a blog about bikes for free and influence the city as effectively as a non-profit with a million dollar budget. What is exciting is that this power is accessible to all individuals, not just cisgender men. In the next four years we are going to see an entire half of the population, women, who have been historically left out of decision making process, organizing and participating. We will have ethnic groups and people of different backgrounds being able to participate. Marches will look less like a group of angry agro dudes dressed in black ready to scare people. Instead marches will get tweets from the police department congratulating them on how well organized and peaceful they are. Resistance by destroying stuff just is not effective right now.

I am excited for what a new generation of resistance will look like and the leaders that it will create.

After the snowstorm our new city councilor Chloe Eudaly started a Facebook chat asking what the city could have done better. She got over 83 responses and she engaged with those responders. Meanwhile, Dan Saltzman’s, who runs PBOT, only Facebook activity over the last year has been to update his cover and profile photo. Amanda Fritz might spend $350,000 “talking” to neighborhood associations about what the city is doing about homelessness but for free Chloe just engaged an entire open house of citizens about how our city can work better.

Something that needs to happen locally is the overthrow of the neighborhood association system. They are too time consuming, not representative, and have a false sense of power that destroys community and encourages reaction instead of positive action. I plan to write more on this topic later.

The other day, my wife, Kate and I were watching various Youtube stars. These stars are people who have made a living by having a somewhat popular Youtube channel about cooking, health, movies, politics, or just random thoughts. We are both very tech savvy but we realized that even our generation, folks who are 30, would not have really thought of using Youtube the same way people born 5 years before us have. The resistance of the 21st century will be led by young people because they think about new media in ways other generations just cannot. To quote a Nobel Laureate, “Your old road is rapidly agin’ Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand.” The Youtube stars are coming for you and with the speed that technology is changing that old road is aging a lot faster.

I am excited for what a new generation of resistance will look like and the leaders that it will create. I think for the first time we will have strong young female leaders from all different backgrounds. The diversity of the 21st century resistance will be its strength. What is crucial is that people in cities continue to demand that we create the public space and infrastructure for this resistance to happen. If we do not the scary dudes in black might take over.
