To say Tataru was excited to meet one of these "internet" friends in person for the first time was perhaps a bit of an understatement. Hinata, in particular, was someone Ernastral had spoken highly of even before Tataru had joined the site, and despite only having spoken to her briefly herself, Tataru could see where Ernastral was coming from. And apparently she had a whole realm to herself, that she was willing to invite them to for a simple social call? It was certainly very kind of her.

Tataru made sure she and Erna had everything they needed for this little social visit. Tataru had made a fairly simple charm bracelet as a thank you for the invitation, because it seemed only polite to bring some sort of thank you gift. Ernastral had brought something as well, an "earring" meant to be slipped over a horn, crafted from silver and studded with pretty precious gems. (Hopefully it will fit over Hinata's horns.)

"You did remember to pack your gift for her, right?" Tataru asks, arching an eyebrow at the often-forgetful Roegadyn.

"Yeah, it's right here." Erna crouches down and opens the flap of her gifted pouch, showing Tataru that yes, the earring has been safely tucked away.

"Alright, then let's get going!"

Ernastral secures the pouch with a nod. She scoops Tataru up, eliciting a startled squeak from the much smaller Lalafell. Sure, she trusts her dear friend to be careful with her, but it's not often that anyone has the audacity to pick up a Lalafell.

Tataru has enough dignity not to squirm (too much) as Ernastral casts her cross-universe teleportation spell and teleports them over to Hinata's place to meet up with her.

A Blank Canvas appears! It is openly dumping all the dumplings from one of the tupperwares into its mouth, the sesame tofu one in fact. Well, the stealing of food not belonging to it is probably just business as normal for it. The smoke that is coming out from the sides of its head however is not. The BC doesn't seem to be too bothered by it though.

The remaining tupperware containers are left neatly stacked on top of one another, two containing leek and egg, two containing chives and mushrooms, and one containing sesame tofu.

The BC is noticeably eyeing the second case of sesame tofu but eventually settles for eating the tupperware the first one came in.

A handwritten note is attached to the pile of containers. A corner of the note is noticeably burnt. "There are dumplings here. Two have leek and egg, two have chives and mushrooms, and I am pretty sure you only have 1 sesame tofu now if the way Potato keeps smelling more and more of sesame when it came home is any indication. I hope you have a happy lunar new year or equivalent for Eorzea with its strange moon. - Chi"

Erna spots the BC's arrival and regards it with a raised eyebrow. She's not too bothered about the blatant food theft, though the smoke does seem like a potential cause for concern? No? Alright then, as long as you're okay.

She kneels down and accepts the containers, taking quick stock as she reads the note. She chuckles to herself and glances at Potato. "You like sesame, huh? Well, guess I'll have to make sure I keep some in stock for the next time you happen to come 'round."

She holds up a finger to tell them to wait and goes into her apartment's kitchen to scrounge up an appropriate snack reward for the little courier. She ends up coming back with some homemade dango.

"Here ya go, a little 'payment' for your time. Enjoy!"

As for the dumplings themselves, she'll likely end up sharing them with some of the other Scions. Because hey, the Heavensturn cheer deserves to be spread around, right?

I'll tell you what's my f*cking ttrpg catnip-- as in thing which hits my lizard brain but functionally does nothing:

Heavy stock, landscape GM screens. I run 90% of my sessions online and even when I'm f2f I rarely use a screen-- and even then (for Star Trek Adventures) I never look at the interior tables. But I love these things-- and I love that publishers know that I can sort of justify buying these if they put a booklet with some random generation tools inside (see Dune for a great one). Free League and Modiphius both do a great job with this-- lovely, heavy beasts. I have a screen for Root which I'm never going to use but I love it as an object. I spent some of my DTRPG money on the Imperium Maledictum screen...for the booklet of course. It's nice, not as heavy or thicc as I'd like but great colors, nice profile, clean interior. I'm running two series of this starting next month and I'm saying to myself, maybe I'll have the screen handy to check things, but I know in my heart of hearts I won't.

I currently have 6 WIPs in my Google Docs. I have not been able to write much because I am preparing for the F2F week-long session of my pre-judicature program this May 8th-12th.

Let's see. There's of course the next update for Glissando, which is Maedhros x Finrod; also a one-shot for Aegnor x Fingon; a family thing featuring Finrod and Aegnor; the next update for post-DD Feanorian House shenanigans for Elsewhere In The New World; and the next chapter for Doom Gloom and Maeglin, which is Finrod x Maeglin. And finally, the next chapter for the crackish adventures of Celegorm and Ungoliant. 🙈

Area I'm strongest with -- I can make a story concise. Fewer words, but packs no less a punch. My friends though, tell me I am very good with angst. Apparently I can murder them with feels. 🔪

Hehe, my works are an acquired taste, I think -- because most of my takes and headcanons differ very much from the standard of the fandom. But for fics I wish would get more love: Quest for the Silmaril AU, a.k.a There And Back Again for one, because I make no move to hide my distaste for that entire episode and the people involved (except Finrod ofc); so it was a great challenge to write a complete a fic for that. Also Glissando because everyone should have an alternative ship from the more popular mainstream one. Hehehe. 😝

Sample Characters: Great RPG Mechanics #RPGMechanics: Week Nine

I guess this week I’m going to be focusing on meta-aspects. Not exactly mechanics, but mechanics-adjacent. I talked about the beauty of Glossary Indexes yesterday. Today I want to cover another utility tool. And it's one I have come around on. 

Early on, I’d say pre-2000s, I thought pre-gen and sample characters were a waste of space in books. Mostly these were characters presented as walk-throughs for character building. For example Harvey Walters appeared as the example investigator for multiple editions of Call of Cthulhu. He was not only used to demonstrate the process of making a character, but he appeared in most of the examples of play, usually illustrating how hapless he was. 

And just as most of my bad-attitudes and dumb ideas about play came out of arrogance and unearned confidence, I decided that because I could not imagine utility for me these things couldn’t be useful for anyone else. I got over that. At least in this case. 

I eventually realized sample characters help illustrate the play possibilities of a game, they show the expected range of stats & skill numbers, and they make it easier to pick up and play. The second edition of Eclipse Phase does this particularly well– with a wide range of pre-gens with different sets tuned to the different campaign styles. And these aren’t relegated to the back. They’re early on, designed to give both the players and the GM a sense of what the world’s like. 

I run a lot of short series to try out games– two shots and four shots usually. I have a ton of ttrpgs I want to play– arising from purchasing too many bundles, getting review copies, or having extra affiliate credit on DTRPG. A four or five shot, a monthly game, is an investment. On average that’s 18-20 hours committed to that game including creating the character keeper, reading rules, sketching out play, making a cheat sheet if needed, and running the game itself. That’s equal to bingeing several Netflix series. 

So games which make that easier: clear materials, interesting starting incidents, reference sheets, etc., go to the front of the line. The decision’s even tighter for running an online two-shot. That’s really equivalent to a substantial four-hour f2f con session. If I have to spend time having the players make up characters– even with the easiest system, that’s at least an hour lost from play. A game with sample characters cuts that down. I can point players to a pdf, let them spend time tweaking some details, sketch out the mechanics and get to playing.

Some game systems offer exceptions to this. PbtA and FitD games often offer quick approaches but the process of CC is as much play as anything. Doing these as a one or two shot often kills me because they players come up with great characters that I want to know more about. Another approach is in-play character creation. Fate as well as several Modiphius games offer this, notably Dune. You set a couple of things, but then pick most of your stats and talents during play in response to events. It can work, but it does put a heavier cognitive load on the players. Some lighter PbtA and FitD games can work with this approach.    

Quick Starts, a great innovation, are great for sample characters. They provide an easy way to access the content. They can also be tweaked in presentation to make them tighter and more focused on the scenario. But designers need to do is make sure everything referenced on the sample characters actually appears in the quick starts. A couple of times running these I’ve stumbled when players ask “what does X talent do?” only to find that information doesn’t appear in the materials anywhere. 

These sample characters don’t have to be in the core book, taking up valuable real estate. They’re often in intro adventures or quick starts mentioned above. But one of the easiest ways to do this is simple to offer a free or cheap collection of characters as a pdf. White Wolf did this for several of their lines; Star Trek Adventures has collections of famous characters from various series. These resources are especially good if you give a couple of formats (text only and complete sheet) and if you leave room for the players to shape and tweak names, genders, ethnicity, etc.
