And then he offers her a ride. And then he realises they're similar. And he offers a chance to stay.

quick miller sister headcanon:

One birthday Ellie got one of those plastic bows and immediately after Joel and Tommy left Ellie and Sarah unsupervised they were out in the yard with an apple in hand trying to recreate those movie scenes where one person puts an apple on their head and the other shoots the apple right in the middle.

Sadly for 6 year old Ellie and 7 year old Sarah they did not get to recreate that scene because the bow was out of Ellies hands as soon as she was about to let go of the arrow and said bow was not seen again.
