My most meta jewellery make ever - tea caddy tin earrings made from a tea tin caddy. The illustrations on my recent vintage tin finds are so pretty and as they were embossed, it made them slightly easier to cut out. I've matched them with my own hand made ceramic beads with tea leaf design and Czech glass fired beads. Tin is traditionally the anniversary gift for those celebrating 10 years of marriage. Some folks say that tin represents strength and resilience in a relationship or flexibility of a bond. In Japan, tin has long been used as a sacred material for Shinto rituals. I love how tin weathers over the years and how it’s possible to find vintage boxes from 50 and 60 years ago that still maintain their beautiful illustrations and patterns. It’s been a productive morning, having potted on my seedlings (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, cayenne and aubergine) and have dropped off the remaining seedlings I don’t need with my neighbour (socially distancing obvs). I have 45 plants now to raise and if half of them survive the transplanting, I’ll be pleased. I only wish I’d done more flowers. It’s been a while since I’ve made any #upcycled #tinjewellery despite continually picking up fabulous #vintagetins on my travels. The one I’m working on now was a #toleware tin unusually in red (rather than black) picked up courtesy of a good friend of mine at a Kings Day flea market we visited in Utrecht. It’s been quite pleasurable to pick out key motifs from the tin, use my die punch to cut the shapes and pair each piece with beads and stones from my collection.
