Legion OC's concepts:
-Nurse Lass: A middle eastern woman that wears a Green attire & as the name implies is The LSH's team medic. Story idea behind the character was that long time supporting character Dr Gym'll was beginning to show his age & recommended the Legion put a proper medical officer in the HQ & her skills & power were what the Legion needed & she studied under the the brightest doctors in the 31st Century like himself. Noteworthy for synthesizing a cure for the Validus Virus that was plaguing Winath & Titan for a time. Powers & abilities beyond her medical profession is her "biological touch" in where she absorbs the biology of any organic species to better understand what she's working on when operating, while also generating a "healing touch" that has the unfortunate side-effect of draining her stamina for long periods depending the injury or sickness, & has basic hand to hand combat courtesy of Karate Kid. She has a crush on Timber Wolf though it'll take time for him to notice.
Ocean Lad: A Horraz. Started off as an enemy of the Legion due to being tricked by Mordru for stealing his Planets Oceans & is said Planets major Meta-Protector learning the truth he would become an ally to the Legion but never a full member (until he does at the start of the "Rebirth"). Powers & abilities include hydrokinesis that was later overcharged when he became host to the Water elemental during the events with the Elements of Disaster & "Final Battle with Mordru". As well as a sturdy shell & strong claws.
Starchaser: A Human male & self proclaimed "Best pilot in the Galaxy". Former Science Police turned smuggler he would transfer goods & cargo to Planets Under the oppression of the Khundnian Empire or Dominian Space. His action gave him notoriety against much of the Galaxy's criminal underground & served as an ally to the Legion during it's Darkest times (The Blight & EarthGov). Was granted Legion Membership by Kono as part of the crew of "Legion Lost" a ship made to charter "The Second Galaxy" along with additional Legionnaires.
Distract Guy: Part of the "Troublesome Recruits". A Czarian & the alleged descendant (Or Great-Great-Grandson) of the Main Man himself Lobo. Styling himself on Greaser Culture & Utilizing the old SpaceHog & A personal chain he would become a "Hero-for-Hire" while coming up with the dumb name as part of his schtick of "being a very annoying distraction to the enemy". His recruitment to the Legion was a 50/50 split only barely making it with one vote (allegedly by Brainiac 5 himself). Powers & abilities include standard Czarian biology with an accelerated healing factor & an additional ability of igniting himself on fire (something he claims he got from his Grandmother). Despite his brash nature & disagreements with Legion seniors he's dedicated to the team & to his closest friends (the other troublemakers)
Barik: Part of the "Troublesome Recruits". A Khund was Raised on Earth after the unfortunate deaths of his parents in a space cruiser accident. A love of Pro-Wrestling & "ancient earth books books Barik set out for adventures in space styling himself after the characters of the books. He would venture to his ancestral home of Khundia & found it "disappointing" with the race relying on cybernetic enhancement instead of "their true strength". He was another difficult vote but not nearly as dire as his friend before him. Has basic Khund biology, With decent knowledge on spells he learned on his travels & wrestling fighting style. despite being a meathead he has a good head on his shoulders & enjoys game nights & charity matches against the other Legion physical powerhouses.
AUTO-TOM: Part of the "Troublesome Recruits" A former "Dockbot" that fled to Robotica due to a malfunction in it's programming. Said Malfunction also kept them connecting with Robotica's networks & they essentially missed out on COMPUTO's war with Galaxy. During their stay on Robotica it took an interest in the LSH & the Robotic heroes of the 21st Century & came to the conclusion to become this century's "Hero to the Artificial" restyling & reformatting their build to a more Heroic appearance & taking a name from "automaton" before leaving Robotica to save lives. After Robotica was seen as an independent species thanks to the Legion AUTO-TOM auditioned for the Legion to grasp a better understanding of "The Hero factor". AUTO-TOM had formed a friendship with Danielle Foccart but has also found kinship with the other 3 recruits.
The Dominator: Part of the "Troublesome Recruits". The Last Dominator in the Galaxy. Having a metagene amongst their species they were experimented & tortured to become a super-soldier for one of the many Domination plans they were known for. The Warship carrying their stasis pod however was raided & destroyed leaving then adrift & missing the Dominator War in where Cosmic Boy makes the controversial decision in banishing The Dominion to the Phantom Zone. Eventually the pod was found by Matter-Eater Lad & was awoken with whatever activation codes in their head lost or destroyed. Learning the fate of their species left them confused, Hatred for what they did to them but sadden that they are the only known Dominator free in the Universe. Less of a Recruitment & more of a Sanctuary The Dominatir chose to stay with the Legion. The metagene they were given gives allows them to use kinetic energy & they have basic Dominator Biology. Anti-Social amongst the Legion, Element Lad had tried to help them adjust & find an inner peace while the Dominator begrudgingly finds kinship amongst "two imbecilies (Distract Guy & Barik), & A Machine (AUTO-TOM)"

I am going to participate in a fundraiser for November helping to raise awareness and money for mens health issues. Yup. Its Movember. Get ready for an epic mustache.
I have just this year begun to take on my own mental health issues and now that I am getting better I am realizing that I need to get on all of my other issues too. My hope is that I can raise some money to provide resources for other guys in my boat, and maybe inspire some folks to take that first step toward help.
I've decided to go for nutso and try to raise $1,000 bucks. I know that's a lot, but I feel strongly about this. I think I am going to make a reward tear for tumblr and facebook where I will be posting certain things. But I need some help on deciding what the blocks should be. (Also, regardless of the donation size, if you donate to my page, send me a screenshot of the donation confirmation and you will get a follow and a promo from me)
So when I hit the following goals I will do the following reward: (this is where I need help, please send suggestions)
$1 - GIF of me doing a Happy Dance
$10 - New pictures of October the Kitty
$50 - I will upload a video of the story i was GOING to tell at the Moth Story Slam about getting punched by a pro wrestler
$100 - I will post embarrassing childhood/highschool photos
$150 - will record and post a cooking video. Probably Pumpkin Shrimp Curry.

$500 - patch and scarf giveaway. I will send out some rad patches and Timbers Army scarfs to a number of followers who win a random lottery
$750 - I will do what it takes to get into a wrestling ring again and get myself smacked down by a wrestler. I have an idea on how I can make this happen so this isn't TOO far fetched
$900 - I will restart the Oreo Stash game with full force posting new updates weekly
$1,000 - I will dye the mustache to match my hair

Pokemon Designs I don’t like. Part 5.
Gen 5.
If you thought Gen 4 was bad, you haven’t seen Gen 5. This list would be way shorter if it was the Pokemon designs I do like, but we know we’re all here to roast ugly Pokemon so let’s do this!
First though, dishonorable mentions.
Purloin.
Tumblr media
My only problem here is the fact that it looks like its wearing a leotard. That’s weird.
That’s it for now, on with the list.
1. The starter Pokemon and their evolutions.
Tumblr media
If I don’t like any of the starter Pokemons for a game, we got a problem. Okay, Snivey is kind of cute, but if it’s ultimately gonna evolve into a grass snake, then why give it arms and legs? Just make it a cute little snake! The evolve forms could also look better.
Tepig is cute, as long as you don’t think it’s wearing brown underwear, why not paint the hind legs too? Oh, it’s probably because the evolution form looks like its wearing a leotard, what is it with this gen and leotards? Tepig’s evolutions are unnecessarily humanoid, who wants a giant pig that fighter? Next they’re gonna be making a pro wrestling tiger.
Finally, Oshawott. I don’t like its dumb face, people say its cute, but I’ve seen cuter. I hate him in the anime and its color scheme bothers me, it looks more like an ice type, and that brown nose doesn’t match the rest of the colors. I could give it a pass if it had different colors and cool evolutions that make sense, but sadly, that’s not the case, I just find it hard to believe that Oshawott turns into Samurott, whos design could also use a few tweaks.
Snivy line: 8/10
Tepig line: 5/10
Oshawott line: 4/10.
2. Patrat and Watchog.
Tumblr media
I wish the real designs were like the ones on the left. No, this is fanart that looks so much better than the original designs on the right.
This fanart made me realized that Watchog is like a mixture between a groundhog and a meerkat, well, IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE IT! I did not get that impression at all, even if its design is simplified, It doesn’t look like a meerkat at all, it doesn’t even feel like an animal. I thought it was some kind of rabid squirrel minus the white foam because, what’s with the crazy eyes? I understand the yellow vest, it’s a neat idea, but they could’ve made something less rabid squirrel and Gopher thief like. Although, now that I think about, why would it need to make itself visible in the dark? Did those gophers kept getting run over by cars? Survival of the safest, I guess.
2/10.
Fanart: 100. Done by  blueharuka from Deviantart.
3. lillipup line.
Tumblr media
I feel like I’ve seen this Pokemon somewhere before... Oh, right! In real life dog shows!
These are various breed of terriers turned into Pokemon, for example, the Norwich Terrier.
Tumblr media
Nawwwww.
Lillipup looks like someone threw a pie at this dog’s face. I would’ve combine it with a bear or something like that, but I guess that would make it too fantastical for the Pokemon World.
2/10.
4. Elemental Monkeys.
Tumblr media
I say nothing creative, I hear nothing original and I definitely see no good Pokemon designs here.
What was the point of making these things? I could give the three first monkeys a pass if they had a little more effort put into their designs, but those evolutions are terrible and unnecessary. Don’t make them evolve, specially into a Japanese high school hooligan, a fat monkey that hurt its fingers when somebody close the piano he was playing, and a hippie.
First stage: 3/10
Evolutions: 1/10
5. Pidove evolution line.
Tumblr media
Okay, Pidove is a just pigeon. I used to see hundreds of them in the park I walked pass after school.
Tranquill could’ve look like an actual quail, but it’s just a bigger pigeon with a fancy hair style that doesn’t make any sense.
Unfezant... The female is boring like real life pheasants, but they at least have nicer colors than that. The male Unfezant is slightly more colorful, but compared to real pheasants both designs and color schemes are just boring. I like the male’s mask design though.
These are great ideas, a pigeon Pokemon evolving into a quail and then a pheasant, but they didn’t even try to make anything unique and memorable for these designs and it’s just a big letdown.
Pidove: 1/10.
Tranquill: 1/10.
Unfezant: 3 for the male, 1 for the female.
6. Blitzle and Zebstrika.
Tumblr media
Just like with Stunky and Skuntank, I thought these were only one Pokemon. An evolution seems unnecessary, and even if they needed a pre evolution they could’ve played with the color pattern, you know, make the pre evolution white with black stripes and the evolution black with white stripes. This is just a big waste of potential.
2/10.
7. Swoobat.
Tumblr media
Zubat was better looking than this thing. I get they wanted a bat Pokemon with a heart shape nose, but this is just lousy. Woobat gives the impression that it would evolve into something nice like an Honduran White bat, not this dummy.
2/10.
8. Drilbur and Excadril.
Tumblr media
I hate this things face, I just can’t stand those stupid eyes and that nose, and what’s with the pattern on its body? Looks like somebody spilled blue paint on its fur.
Tumblr media
While this guy looks like a Digimon. Why does it have a drill coming out of its head? This is like a lame attempt of making it look cool, but it just doesn’t work.
Drilbur: 2/10.
Excadrill: 3/10.
9. Timber evolution line.
Tumblr media
Now these seem like Pokemon whos very existence look painful. I always found humanoid  fighting Pokemons weird looking, but I can never stand to see these things. The first thing I see are those giant veins around their bodies. You know when you have to use all your strength and your veins can be seen through your skin? Just imagine a Pokemon always looking like that.
Tumblr media
3/10.
10. Palpitoad.
Tumblr media
Just Palpitoad. The transition evolution between Timpole and Seismitoad. It’s just so weird looking to me. It has that weird skin color in the middle of its body, that weird mouth, and those stubby feet. I know it’s the transition between a tadpole and a frog, but there has to be a better looking design.
3/10. At least they didn't make it look like it was wearing a leotard.
Wow, we are not even half way there, gonna have to stop here for now.

“The Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Roberts has been extraordinarily friendly turf for corporations. It has been more than four years since the Court has reversed a lower court decision favoring corporate interests, according to a new analysis by the Constitutional Accountability Center, a progressive think tank.
Now, with the clock ticking for Senate Republicans to confirm President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, federal judge Amy Coney Barrett, the groups that helped push through Trump’s two previous nominees are again ready to spend tens of millions of dollars on advertisements to ensure Barrett receives the lifetime appointment.
With 53 Senate Republicans in this soon-to-end 116th Congress, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell needs to prevent no more than three defections to confirm Barrett with a simple majority. Two Republicans have publicly expressed disapproval of confirming Trump’s nominee so close to the election, Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, though it is not clear they have unequivocally committed to voting against Barrett—and the developing coronavirus outbreak among Republican senators is changing the vote count and confirmation timeline.
The conservative groups spending millions on television, digital, and direct mail ads hope to shore up GOP support for a nominee who is expected to be anti-abortion, socially conservative, and favorable to corporate interests.
All signs indicate that a potential Justice Barrett would continue the pro-corporate tilt of the Court. According to an analysis by the nonpartisan watchdog group Accountable.us, Judge Barrett sided with corporations over people 76% of the time on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, in 44 of 55 cases reviewed. For example, in the 2018 case of Bruce Betzner and Barbara Betzner v. The Boeing Company, Barrett voted to reverse a district court’s decision to send a personal injury lawsuit back to state courts, the outcome Boeing was seeking. In August, Barrett delivered a ruling that could block gig workers from suing when tech companies deny them overtime pay, according to a report from The Daily Poster.
The Roberts court has been stuffing its docket with cases in which lower courts ruled against corporate interests—fully 91% in the 2018-2019 term. Already on the docket for the term that starts on Oct. 5 are a number of cases that involve state rulings: Ford Motor Co. v. Montana Eighth Judicial District Court, which could limit where individuals can pursue personal injury suits; Rutledge v. Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, on whether states can regulate pharmacy benefit managers; and Carney v. Adams, on whether states can require judges to be affiliated with one of the two major political parties. Other cases to be heard by the Supreme Court will feature deceptive commercial activities, arbitration agreements that limit peoples’ ability to sue corporations, and even the enforcement of IRS reporting requirements.
FOLLOW THE MONEY
Many of the top funders of groups backing Barrett, including many Republican megadonors, are billionaire corporate executives—in industries like manufacturing, transportation, shipping supplies, and private equity financing—whose economic outlooks could benefit from Barrett being confirmed to the vacant seat.
Here are the top donors to conservative groups spending on the Barrett confirmation, according to FEC data from Jan. 1, 2019 to Aug. 31, 2020:
Club For Growth
The right-wing Club For Growth, known for backing far-right candidates against moderate Republican incumbents and a past recipient of funding from the Koch-linked Center to Protect Patient Rights, recently pledged to spend $5 million on ads to back Trump’s nominee. The group’s nonprofit arm received nearly $6.8 million from undisclosed donors from July 2017 through July 2018, according to tax documents. Its super PAC, Club For Growth Action, has reported receiving nearly $56 million in the 2020 election cycle, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.
Club For Growth President David McIntosh said in a statement praising Barrett, “This choice will shape America’s future, as the Court considers cases relating to issues like the constant unconstitutional growth of government and whether federal agencies should have free rein to enact arbitrary rules without Congressional approval.”
Club For Growth has had huge support this year from Republican megadonor Richard Uihlein, the right-wing founder of shipping supplies company Uline, whose donations total $26.5 million this election cycle. Uihlein contributed $10 million to Club For Growth Action, the group’s super PAC, on Jan. 12, then $4 million on April 21 and another $10 million on August 8, according to FEC records.
Right-wing billionaire Jeff Yass, co-founder of financial firm Susquehanna International Group, donated over $17.5 million to the super PAC this cycle. Yass, a Pennsylvania-based options trader, has also contributed over $4 million to the conservative Protect Freedom PAC this cycle, making up the vast majority of its funding as reported in FEC records.
Also in this cycle, Club For Growth Action received over $2.1 million from the late Republican megadonor Richard Gilder, who died in May of congestive heart failure at the age of 87, and his ex-wife Virginia James. James has donated to the conservative Wisconsin state judge David Prosser in a 2011 recount battle and other Koch-related causes.
Richard and Barbary Gaby contributed over $1.6 million to Club For Growth Action. Barbara Gaby is the youngest child of Amway co-founder Jay Van Andel, who, with the DeVos family, has been a major funder of the the Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a nonprofit that helps Republican legislators collaborate with corporate lobbyists, and the Center for International Private Enterprise, a non-profit affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
America First Action
The pro-Trump super PAC America First Action is also promising ad buys totaling $5 million to promote Barrett in national television, digital and direct mail. Its nonprofit arm, America First Policies, took in $22 million in 2017 from donors whose identities it was not required to publicly disclose, while the PAC has received nearly $83 million this cycle, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.
The leading donors to the Trump super PAC, at $10 million apiece, have been Republican megadonor Timothy Mellon, the majority owner of transportation holding company Pan Am Systems, and Kelcy Warren, the billionaire co-founder and CEO of pipeline company Energy Transfer Partners whose Dakota Access pipeline has been mired in court battles over its potential to pollute key water sources in South Dakota.
Geoffrey Palmer, a Republican donor and billionaire real estate developer based in Los Angeles, has donated $6 million to America First Action. Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein threw in over $2.7 million. Three more familiar Trump megadonors have chipped in: Linda McMahon, the former pro wrestling executive who is now the super PAC’s chairwoman, with over $3.5 million; Blackstone Group CEO Stephen Schwarzman, with $3 million; and Diane Hendricks of Wisconsin, chair of a roofing supply company and a Republican megadonor, with $2 million.
Richard DeVos, co-founder of Amway and husband of Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, has contributed $400,000 to America First Action. GOP megadonor Marlene Ricketts, wife of TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts, has given half a million dollars to the PAC.
Americans For Prosperity
Through a standalone website and by mobilizing its membership, the Koch brothers-founded libertarian advocacy group says it has sent 200,000 letters in support of Barrett to U.S. senators in the past week. The group’s super PAC has spent over $20 million this cycle in independent expenditures.
The majority of that amount has come from $7 million from Charles Koch’s fossil fuel conglomerate Koch Industries and close to $6.5 million from the Koch network’s Freedom Partners Action Fund, but several more corporate megadonors have given to Americans For Prosperity Action this cycle. Major GOP donor Ron Cameron, president of the Little Rock, Arkansas-based Mountaire Corporation, a chicken products producer, has contributed $3.5 million. Richard “Dick” Haworth, the former CEO of an eponymous office-interiors manufacturer company, and his wife Ethelyn contributed $1.5 million to AFP Action. Haworth attended an exclusive Vail, Colorado retreat convened by the Koch Brothers for donors who had given over $1 million to right-wing causes. Trucking executive Clarence L. Werner, a previous million-dollar donor to the Kochs’ Freedom Partners super PAC, kicked in $1.5 million on July 1. Individuals from several energy, timber, pipeline, and coal companies have given at least $100,000 each to the PAC.
Judicial Crisis Network
The Judicial Crisis Network’s leading role in the communications push to confirm Trump’s nominees has been funded recently through some $30 million received between July 2018 and June 2019, led by a $15.9 million donation from an anonymous donor, according to IRS records reviewed by the Daily Poster. JCN is organized as a “social welfare” nonprofit and is not required to disclose the identities of its donors.
In 2017, a secret donor behind a $17 million gift readied JCN for the Kavanaugh confirmation showdown, providing over three-fourths of the total amount it received that year. Together in the efforts to confirm Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch in 2017, JCN was estimated to have laid out $22 million.
Three additional groups on the right have said they’ll be spending money on efforts to confirm Barrett: anti-abortion nonprofit Susan B. Anthony List, conservative nonprofit Catholic Vote, and conservative, anti-LGBT nonprofit think tank American Principles Project. The Susan B. Anthony list has reported raising a bit over $1 million to its PAC this cycle from hundreds of donors giving $5,000 and below, while its non-profit arm received over $12 million in funding according to its most recent Form 990, for 2018.
Millions More Spent on State Judicial Races
While the Supreme Court hears cases involving lower courts’ rulings on consumer lawsuits and government regulations, the conservative groups pushing Trump’s nominees have also spent millions to influence state judicial races.
A December 2019 report by the nonpartisan policy institute Brennan Center for Justice, titled The Politics of Judicial Elections, 2017–18,” noted that JCN quietly spent $3.8 million on state elections in those years. After JCN donated nearly $1 million last year to the Republican State Leadership Committee, a national 527 group dedicated to electing Republicans to state office, the RSLC transferred $1.2 million to the Judicial Fairness Initiative, which works as an effort under the RSLC to elect conservative state judges. In the 2018 election cycle, the Judicial Fairness Initiative received over $4.3 million from RSLC, according to IRS records compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.
The Brennan Center tracked how in 2013-14, JCN sent half a million dollars to Wisconsin Club for Growth, which spent money that cycle for the successful reelection campaign of conservative Justice Patience Roggensack. In May, during oral arguments in front of the Wisconsin Supreme Court regarding a stay-at-home order issued by the state health department, Justice Roggensack appeared to downplay the importance of some cases by contrasting the workers at a meatpacking plant who had been exposed to a coronavirus outbreak with “the regular folks in Brown County.” She then joined the majority on the state Supreme Court in a 4-3 decision to strike down the order, which was supported by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers.
The Judicial Ads Act, introduced in the Senate on July 2 by Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), would bring transparency to secretive groups like those that blasted out ads promoting Kavanaugh’s confirmation. The bill would require any group spending at least $50,000 in a year on federal judicial nomination advertisements to disclose the identity of any donor giving $5,000 or more. Recently introduced in a House version as well by Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), the measure is supported by the nonpartisan watchdog Campaign Legal Center. It could be taken up by Congress next year—most likely, if Democrats take control of the Senate—as part of the next version of H.R. 1, the For the People Act, a sweeping ethics package passed by the Democratic House in March 2019 that is not supported by any Republicans in Congress.”

Fun with Feats 8: Kraken Style
Tumblr media
If there is anything that cephalopods and constricting snakes alike have in common, it is the raw crushing power they generate when constricting their prey. An inability to breath, cracking ribs, bruised organs, all can be devastating to prey in the fight for their own lives.
It would only make sense, then, for there to be grappling-based martial arts emulating such creatures would come into being.
Named for the magical legendary giant squid-like cephalopods of mythology (which I always have to do a small mental double take when I remember they are also intelligent creatures with magical powers in D&D/Pathfinder), this style is based around holds that not only loop around your opponent’s limbs to entrap them, but also put pressure on key points so that when you squeeze down, you can suffocate and crush down on said foes.
While not necessarily invented by coastal villages or underwater civilizations, it definitely brings to mind the images of a mighty squid cracking the timbers of a sailing vessel.
At its most basic level of mastery, this style teaches the user how to grapple opponents in such a way that they maintain a better hold, and construct their anatomy in such a way as to maximize pain and/or injury.
The next stage, the Throttle technique, lets them focus on suppressing their foe’s ability to breathe, rather than inflict harm. They do so by constricting airways or compressing the lungs to prevent breathing in. They have to stop doing so to do other grapple actions like dealing damage or pinning a foe, though.
The final technique of the style, called the Kraken Wrack, further increases their applied crushing power, allowing them to deal more damage to grappled foes, or, they can choose to focus their power into crushing their armor or held possessions, crumpling them against their body.
A natural fit for grapple builds, this feat chain gives you more nonlethal utility and damage options for your grappling techniques. Of course, that’s not the only option for grapple builds, which include feats that straight-up give you dynamic pro wrestling moves, but that’s a story for a different entry.
That’s it for today, but look forward to the rest of this week!

Monkey Wrench! by @sunbirddtellsstories
Clockwise from 12: Sun, Jermaine, Jack, and Timber.
Jack Spicer is no one’s favorite. For as long as he can remember, he's always been the underdog, the weirdo, the odd one out, the loser. After months of stagnation and failure, his dreams of world domination, the dreams that he’s been chasing for most of his life, are finally starting to fade. And then suddenly, he finds himself holding a Wu that can make it all happen. A power that can rearrange the natural order and make every one of his foes bow down and show some respect. A power that can finally cement him as the Lord and Master of every last thing on the planet.  The catch? He’s not the only one who has it.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single misstep.
Q: Why did you decide to write Monkey Wrench! ? A: Jack Spicer has always been one of my favorite characters in XS. When I was a kid watching the show on Saturday mornings, I always wanted to see him make it, to succeed in the way he needed to succeed - by making true friends, by finding his place in the world, and most of all, by loving himself. And I never got to see that, and that kind of bummed me out. XS ended with so many others moving on to a new chapter in their lives, but to me, it always felt like Jack's character growth was left up in the air. And after a long, long period of making up stories about what could come after in my head, I started writing it down. And after being inspired by a few authors and their fan fictions, and the creativity and courage they had to share their stories with everyone else, I decided to start getting serious about my own story and start posting it online. And that's how Monkey Wrench! was born. I'm writing this story for a lot of reasons, but the most important reasons are these two: As a kid, I always wanted to go on a XS adventure, because they looked like a lot of fun. Adventures are important for everyone to have, even if it’s just through stories. So writing one, and being able to make up the twists and turns that happen, the villains, the heroes, everyone in between - it all fulfills that wish perfectly. But also--and more importantly--I'm writing this because I want to see Jack Spicer become the hero I know he can be. Come check out the fic and as always, thank you for reading!

Diocletianopolis was uncovered a not big amphitheater
In the southwestern part of Diocletianopolis was uncovered a not big amphitheater. It was built in the time of Constantine the Great (306-337) and after 325 it was not used for gladiator’s combats, because these were banned in the Eastern Empire. Various spectacles and attractive wrestles with trained animals took place here for the entertainment of the garrison, the civil- ian population and the numerous holidaymak-ers. The amphitheater was made of stone and timber. For part of the wooden seats the natu-ral slope of the terrain was used. The long axis of the elliptic arena is 39 m (north-south), and the short axis is 24 m. The arena was accessed through two arched passages, from the north and the south. Staff rooms have been found contiguous to the building. The amphitheater of Diocletianopolis is a common provincial small-size place of entertainment.
“Thrace is adorned by the big cities of Philippopolis (Ammianus Marcellinus, XXVII, 12)
Stara Zagora is situated at the southern foot of Sarnena Gora, part of the Sredna Gora mountain. At this site there was a Thracian settlement Beroe, around which in the early 2nd century AD the Roman city of Augusta Traiana was built. In the written sources, how-ever, the Latin name did not gain currency. The city was mentioned as Beroia, Be rone, Beroe, and later as Verea. From the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161-180) to Gal lien (253-268) the city was entitled to mint coins. This was a time of peaceful life in Thrace and many of the cities flourished (2nd century – first half of 3rd century). For the needs of the market economy numerous workshops were set up for the production of metal, wooden and glass articles, and jewelry.
Augusta Traiana became famous throughout the province with its bronze products: statuettes, medallions, mirrors, vessels, toilet boxes, appliques for carts and chariots. Local mosaicists made various kinds of floor mosaics with interesting subjects. Today color mosaics have been found at many places in public and wealthy residential buildings. On the one hand, they are indicative of a local school, and on the other, they are exponents of subjects typical for the provinces of the Roman Empire in this area. Builders from the city and its surroundings laid water pipelines and made beautiful fountains. One of these is a piece of art — in its upper part it had a stat-uette of a reclining nude boy wooden workmanship byzantium. Stonecutters cut slabs for the street pavement, architectural elements, statues and tombstones. The con-struction of the solid stone wall required work force at the quarries and stonecutting shops.
Priestesses in charge of important cults in the city
The city was organized on the model of the Hellenic poleis and had its local govern-ment. This was the city council (boule) and the people’s assembly (demos) of the inhabitants of Augusta Traiana. The first archon (municipal councilor) headed the college of councilors, where each councilor was responsible for different economic and judicial activities. Among the city elite were elected patrons (chairmen) of various associations and public organizations. Some were members of the Thracian Assembly (Koinon ton Thrakon). The high priests played an important role in the religious life of the city. So far 14 such priests are known, of whom 4 are women. This was a great honor to the female sex in Augusta Traiana. There are single instances in Nicopolis ad Istrum, Serdica, Pautalia, Philippopolis, but here they were multiple. Four of the male high priests were of Thracian descent.
From the city and its environs originate many cult monuments, which demonstrate the religious concepts and beliefs of the pop-ulation. The local Thracians worshipped the Heros (Thracian Horseman), and the deities of mixed adoration: Bendida-Artemis, Zeus- Sbelsurdos, Asclepius-Darsos. Here again the Hellenic influence was strong, most numerous being the dedications to Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Demetra. Roman veteran soldiers settled in Augusta Traiana and its urban territory, who honored their own cults (Jupiter, Victoria, Concordia, Nemesida). The arrival of immigrants from the East brought the cult of Jupiter Dolichenos, Sabasius, Isida, Sarapis, Harpocritos.
The population was heterogeneous, which added color to the everyday life and the diversity in religion and the artistic crafts.
The bloody square
The city was fortified with a stone wall after the invasion of the Costoboci in 170. This hap-pened during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180). The citizens stood out the attacks of the Goths in the middle of the 3rd century. Hard times came in a little more than a century later. The Goths brought devastation in 376-378, then the Huns in the first half of the fifth century. A second parallel wall (pro- teichisma) was built in front of the existing wall. Emperor Justinian the Great (527-565) reconstructed the city and its walls, and in 778 similar measures were taken by the Byzantine Empress Irina. Then for a while the medieval Verea was renamed Jrinopolis.

The Portland Timbers and me: A personal case study in opportunity costs and conscious spending
Saturday night, Kim and I joined 25,216 other soccer fans to watch the Portland Timbers defeat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 during a crazy rare August rainstorm. (Portland gets a lot of rain…but not in early August.) The match was a lot of fun, with three terrific goals. Here. I'll share highlights with you…
I've owned Timbers season tickets since 2010, the year before they made the leap to the top league in the U.S. — but I've been a fan since 1975, when I was six years old. My earliest sports memories are listening to Timbers games on a transistor radio, cheering for the likes of Clive Charles, John Bain, and (especially) goalkeeper Mick Poole. I wanted to be Mick Poole.
Each year in August, I get my Timbers renewal letter. If I want season tickets again, it's time to purchase them.
For the first few years, this was an easy decision. Tickets were cheap. In 2011, they cost me $41.91 per seat per game. Even in 2016, the cost seemed reasonable at $54.00 per ticket per game. Over the past few years, though, ticket prices have skyrocketed. If I want to renew for 2020, I have to be willing to pay $79.12 per ticket per game.
As much as I love the Portland Timbers, they might have found my limit. This price point tests my patience and my pocketbook. I'm not alone.
The High Price of Fun
I own two seats near the top of section 118, which straddles the midfield line in the old part of our stadium. (As a frame of reference, if you watch the highlight video at the start of this article, that view is basically from our seats. We sit six feet in front of the television camera.)
I was very deliberate when I chose these seats. I don't need to sit in the new section; I'd rather look at it. Our seats are never in the sun, and they're sheltered from the prevailing weather pattern, which is important when you get as much rain as we do here in Portland. (Saturday, for instance, we were completely dry. The folks across the way in the expensive seats got drenched. Many retreated to watch from other parts of the stadium.)
If I renew for 2020, each season ticket will cost me $1325. That's a total of $2650 — plus a bullshit $40 service charge.
Now, $2690 isn't the end of the world. Sure, it'd be expensive if I were still deep in debt and struggling to get by. But I'm not. Today, I'm financially independent. I can afford some indulgences.
But here's the thing. Games cost more than just the ticket price. It costs money to get downtown. If costs money to park. It costs money to eat and drink, whether we do it at the stadium or at a nearby restaurant. It costs money for Timbers gear. Sure, many of these expenses are completely optional. But for us — and for most sports fans I know — the ticket price is just part of the expense of going to games.
I'm sure we spend an additional $50 per match. And it might be closer to $100!
Let's consider Saturday as typical. We paid $8 for parking in a “secret” garage an eight-minute walk from the stadium. At the game, Kim and I each had two $10.50 beers (for a total of $42) and a $6 slice of pizza (for a total of $12). So, we spent $62 (plus gas) in addition to two $69 tickets. Our grand total for the evening? Exactly $200.
And that's for one of seventeen home games!
I calculate that our annual expenses for the Portland Timbers are at least $3500 — and they're probably closer to $4000.
I'm sure you'll agree that $4000 is a lot of money. That's a nice trip to Europe, for instance, like the one I made in May with my cousin Duane. That's a substantial portion of a new Mini Cooper. It'd fund an entire year of HelloFresh for two people, four nights a week.
I love the Portland Timbers. But do I love them this much?
Crunching the Numbers
Each year when it's time to renew my Timbers tickets, I go to Kim. “I'm not sure that I should do this,” I say. “I mean, I want to, but I don't like how much it costs.”
Usually, she says the same thing: “Are you kidding me? You love the Timbers! Yes, you should do it. You'd regret if you gave up your seats.”
This year, though, she said something different: “Yeah, the games are expensive. Plus, they're getting to be a hassle. And I don't like all of the weeknight games. Those are tough. Maybe you could find somebody to split the tickets with? Only, this time make sure they pay you in advance.”
Note: When we were on our RV trip in 2015, we split ticket costs with a friend. I didn't ask for money in advance, though, and the friend never paid. Lesson learned.
Yesterday, I crunched some numbers. That's what money nerds do, right? I dug through my email to find pricing information from past seasons. I was able to recreate pasts costs for every year but one.
Although I've included what I paid in 2010, it's not directly applicable. Those were general admission seats in the “Timbers Army”, the rabble-rousing group at the north end of the stadium. Plus, the team wasn't yet a part of Major League Soccer; we were in a lower league.
I bought my current seats in 2011. As you can see, ticket prices have rapidly outstripped inflation. My tickets for 2020 would cost 91% more than they did for the Timbers' first season nine years ago. They'd cost 47% more than they did four years ago. And for the 2020 season, there'll be a 15% price increase over this year.
That's insane!
Looking at inflation data, general prices have increased 16% since 2011 — not 91%. They've increased 8% since 2016 — not 47%.
How can the team justify charging so much for tickets? Especially when the quality of the game experience has declined (rather than improved) during the past few years? Basic economics. Right now, the supply of Portland Timbers tickets falls far below demand. The front office can boost ticket prices until they've found a point of equilibrium. They haven't reached that point yet.
But they may have found my limit.
Conscious Spending in Action
Before the game started Saturday, we chatted with the folks who sit behind us, Gabby and David. They have seasons tickets for both the Portland Timbers and the Portland Thorns (our professional women's team, which is one of the most popular women's pro teams in the world).
Gabby and David have already renewed their tickets for next year — but it may be the last time they do so.
“It's so expensive,” Gabby said. “We save money by trying not buy food and drink at the stadium. We like to go to happy hour somewhere close by first.” I motioned to the two beers David held in his hands. They laughed.
“But we don't want to give our seats up,” David said. “It used to be that you could own your seats and just sell the tickets to other people for the year. Now, though, with electronic ticketing, I think they're trying to catch people who do that.”
Neither we nor they could decide. Do we renew? Do we not renew?
On the drive home, Kim and I tried to brainstorm our options. There are many. We could:
Simply renew the tickets for 2020 and defer the decision about canceling one more year.
Renew the tickets, then decide what to do with them in the spring.
Renew the tickets and split the cost with somebody else.
Renew, but move our tickets to another part of the stadium. This is a tough one for both of us. We like our seats. Like I said earlier, they're basically the “TV” seats. That's our view.
Renew our tickets, but make the deliberate decision to not purchase anything at the stadium. (Right. There's like a zero percent chance we could pull this off.)
Cancel the tickets and enjoy the $4000 “windfall” over the next year (and years to come).
Cancel the tickets and divert the $4000 we would have spent to other goals — like purchasing a new car.
Cancel tickets and buy season tickets to the Portland Thorns (which cost much less).
I'm sure there are other options, as well.
What I find interesting is that this is a personal case study in opportunity costs and conscious spending.
I am doing my best to make a deliberate decision about these tickets. I want for this to be a conscious choice, not a knee-jerk reaction, not something I do out of inertia. I don't want to buy the tickets simply because I've bought them in the past. I want to be mindful about my wants and needs.
And I'm trying to consider the opportunity costs of this choice. Every purchase is a trade-off. If I do buy these tickets, what am I giving up? If I give up the tickets, what do I gain? What is it that I really want? I've cut a lot of smaller expenses this year. This seems like a big expense that I could cut.
The cost for my tickets to the Portland Timbers has increased at an average rate of 7.44% per year. U.S. inflation has averaged below 2% during that period. It's as if the Timbers soccer club has invested in me and other season ticket holders, and they're earning a 5.5% real (inflation-adjusted) return on our business.
I love my Timbers and I want to support them, but I don't like making myself a commodity for somebody else's profit.
Will I renew my tickets this year? Maybe. I have a month to decide. But if I do, I suspect this will be the final season I indulge in this luxury.
True story: While researching past ticket prices in my gmail account, I came across some notes that I mailed myself on 25 September 2013. They pretty much cover this exact same subject! This is a question I wrestle with every year. And every year — so far — I come to the same conclusion: This is something I value.
