maya your music has been the soundtrack for the years-long pining to now-very-loving relationship between me and my girlfriend.
we met back in 2017, both liked each other without realising– i didn’t know she liked girls and she didn’t know i liked her.
we kept dancing around each other for the next four years, but became very close friends. part of that has been me sending her songs that i like.
it was 2020 that i sent her apricots. i was worried it would be a bit obvious, but id always be able to pass it off as just a cool song. i didn’t get much of a reaction from her at the time.
i realised i was in love with her a couple of months later. but she was very emotionally reserved, and i was. Not, and also very mentally ill. i didn’t believe there was any way she could possibly like someone like me.
in 2021, i made her a playlist that was both subtle and also really fucking obvious. time i love to waste was the first track.
it took another two years of us both trying to move on, dating other people, hurting each other without realising, before it hit me that i am In Love with her. she is my everything, and i don’t know how i didn’t see it before.
the moment i kissed her the first time felt like the world was falling into place. everything just made sense.
i’ve started taking her to concerts of all the bands and artists i like. i think the best one was seeing you live. i got to sing tiltw directly for her. i got to kiss her during it.
apricots closed out the gig, and the way she was screaming the words (she is normally so quiet and calm and rational) kind of shocked me but i fell in love with her a little bit more seeing her how much she loved the things that i loved and how gorgeous she is when she’s caught up in the moment. i kissed her during that as well.
it was after the show that she confronted me. she asked if there was a reason i sent her apricots back in 2020, because she spent months thinking about it and trying to figure out if i meant anything by it. i told her it was very very intentional.
moral of the story is that we’re fucking idiots but we’ve finally got each other, and also your music fucks
This is so sweet, I don’t even have words.
I’m glad you two have found each other. 🥺

とある飛空士への恋歌
The Pilot’s Love Song (lit. Love Song for a Certain Pilot) is a series of light novels written by Koroku Inumura.  The TV anime adaptation was directed by Toshimasa Suzuki, written by Shinichi Inotsume, and animated by TMS for the winter 2014 season.
The series follows Kal-el Albus, his class mates, and the rest of a city as they ride a flying rock in soft exile to try to find the legendary End of the Sky.
Tumblr media
Allow me to start out this review by saying that this was, when it was first coming out, the first anime that I ever saw based so heavily around airplanes.  As such, it has a special place in my heart.  So while the plot may be a bit iffy and some of the themes are questionable, that’s not what we’re here for anyway.  This is an airplane anime through and through.  I was hooked with the opening scene, and every episode had some good flying in it, even the class-ramen-shop-for-a-festival episode.  If you are feeling down because of anime that don’t have planes, this is a good one to pick up.
Love Song takes place in the same universe as The Princess and the Pilot, and, while the events take place after the plot of the movie, it is not necessary to view Princess first (though there is a good Easter egg that I missed the first time I watched the show because I had not yet seen the movie). It does, however, mean that the world is the same: magic, kingdoms, and high-tech World War II style aesthetics to the airplanes (Seiichi Nakatani being the mechanical designer for the series).
The main aircraft used in Love Song is the El Halcon, a two-seater tiltwing (erroneously called tilt-rotor) training aircraft.  It features an open cockpit where the pilot sits, and farther aft a station for a navigator/observer.  Being a training craft the El Halcon has no in-built armaments, and though there appears to be a railing to mount a heavy machine gun around the aft seat for the most part the cadets are shown using a rifle as their only means of defense.
The Laguardia comprises the main aerial force of Balsteros Republic, and the plane that the cadets are training to fly.  Essentially it is a more powerful version of the El Halcon, with an enclosed cockpit and stronger engines, though the only armament appears to be a machine gun mounted at the open aft seat.  There are a few other minor changes to the body to differentiate them, such as the El Halcon’s V-tail being inverted on the Laguardia, or the Laguardia having vertical stabilizers behind either engine.  Both are amphibious, recharging their hydrogen fuel cells in the oceans, a plus considering that Love Song shows the planet to be even more of a water world than was suggested by Princess.
While I do not like the tiltwing design of the El Halcon as much as I do the traditional, fixed-wing design of many of the other airplanes in the series, beggars can’t be choosers, and it does let them do some interesting things with character interaction and grand battle tactics.  Unfortunately aerial combat in this anime often goes a few steps beyond “highly suspect;” simply put there is no way you can convince me that a group of kids armed with rifles can take out a squadron of supposedly boom and zoom fighters, especially when the cadets are taught to bunch up.  It should make for a scene reminiscent of a western’s wagon fort, with the tension that that imparts, but in this context it just ends up making the enemy look laughably incompetent and the cadets that survive armored with plot rather than wits or skill.
The Pilot’s Love Song takes home 4.5 out of 5 Airplanes for some darned good flight sequences, even if it tends to eschew the reality of aerial combat a bit too much for my taste.

Flightline: 61 - Tiltrotors
Early Experiments.
Almost before the first flight of a heavier-than-aircraft, research has looked into combining the vertical takeoff and landing abilities of a helicopter with the long range and high speed of an airplane. One of the concepts identified was the tiltrotor, in which the the propellers, either connected with shaft to the engines or mounted as a unit in nacelles, are able to be tilted through 90°, allowing them to function as helicopter blades for vertical flight and as propellers for horizontal. Brothers Henri and Armand Dufaux began work in 1902, with a patent being awarded in 1904. George Lehberger patented the first recognizably modern tiltrotor in May of 1930, though it was never built. Prior to WW2, the Weserflug company designed their P.1003/1, which would have been a hybrid of tiltrotor and tiltwing designs. A Daimler-Benz DB600 piston engine was to be mounted in the fuselage, and linkages would transfer power to the wingtip-mounted propellers. the wings were split approximately half-way along the span, and they would tilt along with the nacelles holding the propellers. The P.1003 was never built, though it did establish some concepts for future tiltrotors and tiltwings.

Concurrently, Heinrich Focke designed the Focke-Achgelis Fa.269 went in a different direction, with the rotors facing downwards for VTOL and swiveling backwards 80° for horizontal flight. Focke carried out extensive wind tunnel tests, along with bench tests of the gearboxes and pivoting mechanisms, but the design did not advance beyond a full-scale wooden mockup before Allied bombing ended work.

Post-war: Trancendental Aircraft.
After WW2, two former employees of Kellet Aircraft formed Transcendental Aircraft Company to work on a tiltrotor design of their own. The Model 1-G was powered by a Lycoming O-290-A flat-four engine which drove two 3-bladed rotors, controlled by a cyclic and collective. Despite heavy damage caused by the rotor blades shattering on a test rig in 1951, funding from the USAF allowed Transcendental to complete the Model 1-G in 1954, and the plane took its first tethered flight on 15 June, with an untethered flight occurring on 6 July. Flight testing continued until a control failure led to a crash on 20 July 1955, injuring the pilot but destroying the 1-G. The tiltrotor completed 23 hours of flight time, and although it did not completely transition from vertical to horizontal flight, tilt angles of up to 75° were explored, with up to 90% of the plane’s lift being provided by the wings, making it the first functional tiltrotor.

The success of the Model 1-G allowed Transcendental to refine the design into the Model 2, which flew in 1956. The Model 2 was powered by a Lycoming O-435-23 six-cylinder, and the enclosed cockpit could accommodate two. USAF funding dried up however, with the government becoming more interested in the Bell XV-3. The Model 2 was abandoned, and Transcendental was sold to Republic.

Bell XV-3
The result of a joint program between the USAF and US Army, the Bell XV-3 was the first successful tiltrotor design, and the ultimate ancestor of the V-22 Osprey. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-985-AN-1 Wasp Junior piston engine in the fuselage, the XV-3 was fitted with two 3-bladed props during initial testing, but the second example flew with two-bladed props. The first XV-3 was damaged beyond repair during a test flight in 1956 when extreme vibrations caused the pilot to black out. After extensively redesigning and reinforcing the second XV-3 (serial number 54-148), the type restarted test flights in 1958, though vibrations and instability continued to plague the design. As a result of wind tunnel testing, the rotor diameter was reduced and the wing structure was stiffened again. Tests resumed once more, and the XV-3 achieved a full transition from vertical to horizontal flight on 18 December 1958.
Tumblr media

Flights continued until 1962, after which the XV-3 was subjected to a series of wind tunnel tests with the aim of eliminating a dangerous condition known as pylon whirl, which had led to severe vibration and instabilities throughout the program. These tests ended in April of 1966, when both rotors failed, damaging both the XV-3 and the 40x80 wind tunnel at NASA Ames. The damaged XV-3 was found at AMARG in 1984, and under the leadership of former Bell XV-3 engineer Claude Leibensberger the tiltrotor was partially repaired and placed in storage. In 2005 Bell employees began a two year restoration of 54-148, after which it was transferred to the USAF Museum in Dayton, where it has been on display in the R&D Gallery since 2011.

In 1972, NASA awarded a contract to Bell Helicopter for what would become the XV-15. The XV-15 was designed to simplify the conversion process and improve performance, and as such it was powered by two Textron Lycoming LTC1K-4K turboshafts in nacelles mounted at the ends of the wings. This eliminated the complex gearing and shafts linking the propellers to the engine as seen in earlier types, though a cross-linking shaft was included in case of an engine failure. The XV-15 also took advantage of improvements in avionics and materials, further improving the transition from vertical to horizontal flight. Flight testing of the XV-15s commenced in 1977, with one being displayed at the 1981 Paris Air Show.

N702NA was later damaged beyond repair on 20 August 1992 when a bolt slipped out of the collective control system on one pylon, causing that rotor to go to full pitch. The aircraft rolled uncontrollably and impacted upside-down, injuring both crew. The XV-15 was deemed uneconomical to repair, but the cockpit was salvaged and used as a simulator. The second XV-15, N703NA, was used in NASA test flights until 2003, after which it was placed on display at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Washington Dulles International Airport. The data generated by the XV-15 program led to the Bell/Boeing V-22 and Bell/Augusta BA609.

The Hiller X-18 would be conceived as a testbed to assess the practicality of a tiltwing transport. The project dated back to 1955, when the USAF contracted Hiller to produce a prototype for their tiltwing design. Work was sped along by salvaging parts from other programs, including the fuselage from a C-122 and turboprops from the cancelled XFV and XFY VTOL fighter programs. The general concept was simple - the X-18 had a turboprop on either wing driving contra-rotating propellers to provide thrust for both conventional and hovering flight, and a J34 in the tail turbojet would provide reaction control at low speeds. To hover, the entire low aspect-ratio wing assembly would rotate, tilting the engines with them to provide vertical thrust. flight testing began in November 1959. Numerous problems were noted, including the tendency for the large wing to catch the wind while hovering and the vulnerability of the design to engine failure, as the engines were not cross-linked. Additionally, thrust control came from adjusting the throttle rather than the propeller blades, making reaction times too slow for acceptable control. Only 20 flights were conducted, and the X-18 was grounded after propeller issues put the aircraft into a spin on its last flight. Tests on a hover rig continued for some time afterwards, but the program was put to an end three years later in January 1964.

Rising need for faster means of transportation is the major factor boosting the growth of the market over the forecasted period.
The latest report offers a comprehensive analysis of the Flying Taxi industry and thoroughly investigates the key industrial aspects including forecast market size, product segmentation, product specifications, major application areas, cost structure, competitive landscape, and company profiles of the leading market players. The report further studies the supply chain cycle and distribution channels of the Flying Taxi market, and it also identifies the key business strategies undertaken by the market players to boost market presence. In addition, some advanced analytical tools like Porter’s Five Forces Analysis, SWOT analysis, feasibility analysis, and investment return analysis have been used by the authors of the report to present quantitative and qualitative analyses of the Flying Taxi market.
Rising urban population leads to an ever increasing amount of traffic on the roads. For distances of more than 20 kilometers, a flying taxi acts as an attractive solution to a conventional taxi, as it can bypass the congested roadway on the ground. Major investments are being carried out by market players to develop better battery technologies. This will lead to an increase in the maximum distance that the flying taxi can be flown to. Flying taxi adds a third dimension to the urban transportation matrix. It also acts as an attractive solution for areas where merely increasing the two dimensional capacity would in no way solve the existing traffic situation. Autonomous flight technology is one of the factors that will lower the operating costs of the flying taxis as the cost rendered due to a pilot will become obsolete. The extra free seat in each aircraft will also boost the potential by facilitating the increase in the payload.
