Caught up on Ice Queendom (again), and...is it just me, or is Nega-Blake mostly winning her argument with Nega-Weiss? Nega-Blake keeps explaining all the reasons the faunus have to distrust/hate humanity in general and Weiss in specific, but all Weiss can say is "I didn't personally do any of that, don't take it out on me!"

I kinda wish Blake actually countered that point, though. There are lots of options, from "You're still benefiting from the continued exploitation of faunus!" to "What else are we supposed to do? Nobody else is going to fight for us!" to "Do you expect me to dig up the corpse of Big Nicholas to punish him for his crimes?"

But even without that...I love how Ice Queendom is focusing less on the White Fang's terrorism than on the genuine injustices that it's a reaction towards. You could argue that that's just because it's Weiss's story, but...no? Both sides of that conflict are equally part of Weiss's story. The only reason that the injustices faunus face are given more focus than their terrorism is that the narrative considers a few wrecked trains less important than the oppression of an entire ethnic group.

There are quite a few reasons I hope Toshimasa Suzuki, Kenjirou Okada, Tow Ubukata, and everyone on the Ice Queendom team that Wikipedia doesn't mention in the sidebar keep remaking RWBY under the guise of telling side stories. Their treatment of the White Fang is a big one! I could see it falling into the same traps Original RWBY did with regard to the White Fang, but things are looking promising so far!

(I also like the detail that faunus were forced to fight Grimm to defend the human upper class. I don't recall anything like that being mentioned in Original RWBY, but it's a neat idea.)

Other random thoughts:

The use of splitscreen shots is a neat aesthetic touch. It would be weird if just one episode or some scattered scenes were like that, but Ice Queendom uses them enough that it feels like a deliberate artistic choice.

Not sure how to feel about Grandpa Nick's presentation. On one hand, it makes sense that Weiss remembers him as a kindly old philanthropist. On the other hand, he built a company renowned for its exploitation of faunus workers, and that's not something that just springs out of nowhere. I don't feel like the Big Nicholas looming over the story gets enough focus to say anything as nuanced as "He was nice to his family but callous towards others"; it kinda comes off as suggesting that Jacques was a bad apple, and the SDC just needs the right Schnee plutocrat in charge. I feel like the best solution to this would have been to let Nicholas fade into the background. (For instance, cutting that dream-flashback-thing where Weiss talks with her grandpa, and replacing it with a conversation she has with some present-tense character. Maybe she could cover some of those points in that conversation she has with Ruby?)

Revealing that Ruby has some special anti-Grimm power in her eyes before it's absolutely plot-critical is a good idea! The implementation is weird, though. Ruby has her epiphany, her moment of triumph; then the Nightmare suddenly restrains her after being shot a bunch; then Ruby's eyes give her a different moment of triumph, one that feels a bit less earned.

The Silver Eyes also prove that the IQ team is, on some level, preparing to do an Ice Queendom sequel if it's greenlit. There is no reason for that double-reversal-of-fortune ex machina unless it's establishing the Silver Eyes as something Important and Magic.

Jaune defeating Weiss's internal image of her abusive father feels like it's symbolically significant, but damned if I could say what it means! He did it with the help of Silly!Pyrrha and the Silly!Weisses, the latter of which definitely represent the childlike parts of Weiss that she locks away under her icy facade, but I'm still not sure what the former means, symbolically.

With the 4th episode of RWBY Ice Queendom about to premiere, I wanted to take a moment to talk about the opening theme. I don’t know what exactly the general response is (nor do I really want to know), but it’s worth understanding that the opening for episodes 1-3 is likely a placeholder.

I’m not the first person to bring this up, as others have already mentioned this elsewhere. Having an opening theme for an anime premiere with reused footage and then be updated with new footage is a fairly common practice in the anime industry. This can be either due to scheduling issues or to coincide with a phase in the story or some other matter.

RWBY Ice Queendom is not even the first anime directed by Toshimasa Suzuki to have updated footage. I mention this previously on Twitter, but the 2012 anime Rinne no Lagrange is a good example of this. The second opening in particular reuses footage from the first opening. However, by episode 15, it updates with new animation and even slight change in the compositing, as seen in the above video.

With a new promotional video for the next phase in RWBY Ice Queendom’s story, don’t be too surprised if new footage for the opening will be shown, maybe even with storyboards done by Suzuki this time.

The Pilot’s Love Song (lit. Love Song for a Certain Pilot) is a series of light novels written by Koroku Inumura.  The TV anime adaptation was directed by Toshimasa Suzuki, written by Shinichi Inotsume, and animated by TMS for the winter 2014 season.

The series follows Kal-el Albus, his class mates, and the rest of a city as they ride a flying rock in soft exile to try to find the legendary End of the Sky.

Allow me to start out this review by saying that this was, when it was first coming out, the first anime that I ever saw based so heavily around airplanes.  As such, it has a special place in my heart.  So while the plot may be a bit iffy and some of the themes are questionable, that’s not what we’re here for anyway.  This is an airplane anime through and through.  I was hooked with the opening scene, and every episode had some good flying in it, even the class-ramen-shop-for-a-festival episode.  If you are feeling down because of anime that don’t have planes, this is a good one to pick up.

Love Song takes place in the same universe as The Princess and the Pilot, and, while the events take place after the plot of the movie, it is not necessary to view Princess first (though there is a good Easter egg that I missed the first time I watched the show because I had not yet seen the movie). It does, however, mean that the world is the same: magic, kingdoms, and high-tech World War II style aesthetics to the airplanes (Seiichi Nakatani being the mechanical designer for the series).

The main aircraft used in Love Song is the El Halcon, a two-seater tiltwing (erroneously called tilt-rotor) training aircraft.  It features an open cockpit where the pilot sits, and farther aft a station for a navigator/observer.  Being a training craft the El Halcon has no in-built armaments, and though there appears to be a railing to mount a heavy machine gun around the aft seat for the most part the cadets are shown using a rifle as their only means of defense.

The Laguardia comprises the main aerial force of Balsteros Republic, and the plane that the cadets are training to fly.  Essentially it is a more powerful version of the El Halcon, with an enclosed cockpit and stronger engines, though the only armament appears to be a machine gun mounted at the open aft seat.  There are a few other minor changes to the body to differentiate them, such as the El Halcon’s V-tail being inverted on the Laguardia, or the Laguardia having vertical stabilizers behind either engine.  Both are amphibious, recharging their hydrogen fuel cells in the oceans, a plus considering that Love Song shows the planet to be even more of a water world than was suggested by Princess.

While I do not like the tiltwing design of the El Halcon as much as I do the traditional, fixed-wing design of many of the other airplanes in the series, beggars can’t be choosers, and it does let them do some interesting things with character interaction and grand battle tactics.  Unfortunately aerial combat in this anime often goes a few steps beyond “highly suspect;” simply put there is no way you can convince me that a group of kids armed with rifles can take out a squadron of supposedly boom and zoom fighters, especially when the cadets are taught to bunch up.  It should make for a scene reminiscent of a western’s wagon fort, with the tension that that imparts, but in this context it just ends up making the enemy look laughably incompetent and the cadets that survive armored with plot rather than wits or skill.

The Pilot’s Love Song takes home 4.5 out of 5 Airplanes for some darned good flight sequences, even if it tends to eschew the reality of aerial combat a bit too much for my taste.

A new PV, poster visual, staff, and cast of the anime film “Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare” (Love, Be Loved, Leave, Be Left) has been revealed. It is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on May 29th, 2020.

A live-action adaptation of the shoujo manga series by Io Sakisaka is also being planned for release in August 2020.

Tatsunoko's the worth of Smiles TV Anime Previewed in Ad

 The official Twitter account for Egao no Daika (The worth of Smiles), Tatsunoko Productions' (Speed Racer, Gatchaman, Time Bokan, Infini-T Force) fifty fifth day anime project, began streaming a 15-second ad on weekday for the show. RWBY: lo studio Shaft è al lavoro su una serie anime

La serie arriverà nel corso di quest’anno.

La popolare webserie statunitense “RWBY” di Rooster Teeth ha sempre strizzato l’occhio alle produzioni giapponesi e quest’anno diventerà a tutti gli effetti un anime.

Lo studio SHAFT (Bakemonogatari, Magia Record), infatti, sarebbe già al lavoro su una serie dal titolo “RWBY: Ice Queendom” (RWBY: Hyosetsu Teikoku), che vedrà i protagonisti passare dalla computer grafica 3D ad un animazione 2D tradizionale.

In un articolo, al momento non più disponibile, Crunchyroll ha confermato che distribuirà la serie in streaming, sia con il doppiaggio giapponese che con quello inglese.

Per la serie, il design dei personaggi si basa su un concept realizzato da Huke (Black Rock Shooter, Steins;Gate), poi adattato per l’animazione da Nobuhiro Sugiyama (Nisekoi, Un marzo da leoni).

Il progetto è supervisionato da Kenjiro Okada (Un marzo da leoni) e diretto da Toshimasa Suzuki (Rinne no Lagrange, The Price of Smiles).

Il soggetto per la storia è stato ideato da Gen Urobuchi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass), mentre la sceneggiatura è affidata a Tow Ubukata (Mardock Scramble, Sokyu no Fafner, Ghost in the Shell Arise).

Le musiche saranno ad opera di Nobuko Toda e Kazuma Jinnouchi. La sigla di testa si chiamerà “Beyond Selves” e sarà eseguita da Void_Chords ed L. Come brano di chiusura sarà usato “Awake”, un pezzo arrangiato da TK from Ling Tosite Sigure e cantato da Saori Hayami, la doppiatrice di Ruby.

Il mondo fantastico e futuristico di Remnant è pieno di mostri famelici, terreni insidiosi e più cattivi di quanti si possano contare. Fortunatamente, l'Accademia Beacon sta addestrando Cacciatori e Cacciatrici a combattere i mali del mondo. Ruby, Weiss, Blake e Yang sono molto abili, ma se vogliono sopraffare le forze oscure in agguato, dovranno imparare a lavorare come una vera squadra. 

Il franchise ha già ispirato un manga in un volume unico disegnato da Shirow Miwa, oltre che un’antologia composta da quattro volumetti, entrambi editi in Italia da Planet Manga. 

A breve, verrà lanciato anche un nuovo fumetto, direttamente collegato alla serie giapponese, che sarà curato da Kumiko Suekane (Versailles of the Dead, Blood+ Adagio, Afterschool Charisma).

Tatsunoko's the value of Smiles TV Anime Previewed in Ad

 The official Twitter account for Egao no Daika (The worth of Smiles), Tatsunoko Productions' (Speed Racer, Gatchaman, Time Bokan, Infini-T Force) fifty fifth day of remembrance anime project, began streaming a 15-second ad on Mon for the show. The anime can premiere on the WOWOW, Tokyo MX, and YTV channels in January, and it'll have twelve 30-minute episodes.

The show stars:
