Happy Birthday Sam
“Happy birthday Mr. Wesson.”
Sam jumped startled as Becky appeared in front of him with a card. “I took the liberty of having everyone in the office sign a birthday card for you.”
“Thanks, Becky…” Sam awkwardly took the card from her.
“Hard to believe you’re turning thirty-six today, you hardly look a day over twenty-eight,” she added.
He raised an eyebrow at her. “...How do you know I’m turning thirty-six?”
She blushed and tapped her headset. “Sandover Publishing House. How may I direct your call?” She gave Sam an apologetic smile before she hurried off back to the receptionist’s desk.
He shook his head and walked down the hall to his office. He flipped on the lights as he stepped inside and went over to his desk with the intention of turning on his computer and paused when he saw the flowers on his desk. It was a mixed bouquet and lavender and orange roses tied together with a bow in a clear vase.
Sam picked up the small card attached to the vase and read the small note. Happy Birthday was written on the card in neat calligraphy. He tucked the card back in amongst the flowers and looked up at the knock on his door.
“Morning Rowena,” he smiled at the older woman. “No Dean this morning?”
“Poor dear’s at home sick as a dog,” she answered. “He wanted to make sure you took a look at the candidates for the assistant head of IT position. Though we both agree Miss Bradbury is the best choice for the job.”
“Well at least he took his sick days this time instead of trying to work through it like before,” Sam told her.
He flipped through the files Rowena had given him and then handed them back. There was a green tab sticky on the second file, usually Dean’s indication who would be the best fit. Red was ‘No way in hell’ and yellow meant ‘with a little work they’d be good’.
“If Dean says she’d be a good fit, then give her a call and schedule a drug test and background check,” Sam told her. “I trust his judgment. He hired me after all.”
“Wonderful, we’ve already got her scheduled for next Monday,” Rowena told him. “Oh, and before I forget. I left you a little something in your second drawer. Happy birthday Sam.”
He started to protest but she was already gone. He sighed and opened the second drawer of his desk and saw a gold gift bag. He peeked inside and saw an assortment of various candles. He made a mental note to send her a thank you card.
Sam reached for his phone as it started ringing and leaned back in his chair
“Wesson speaking,” he answered.
“I can’t do it.”
Sam rolled his eyes. “Can’t do what Chuck?”
"I can't do it. Speak in front of all those people, what am I supposed to say?" The man asked. "What if I say the wrong thing? What if they don’t like the new book?”
"You'll be fine Chuck," Sam told him. "It's a simple interview. Answer a couple of questions, announce the publication date for the new book. Take some pictures with a few fans, you'll be home by 9 pm to chat with Mistress Magda."
"Okay," the man took a deep breath. "Okay. Thanks, Sam...and Happy Birthday. I uh, I forgot to get you a gift."
"Don't worry about it," Sam answered.
He hung up and turned his attention to be his email to get started on work. He was tempted to shoot Dean and email and see how the other man was doing. Even if he was home sick, Dean was a workaholic at heart.
He grabbed his phone as it started ringing again.
“You’ll be fine Chuck, ” Sam said by way of greeting.
“...It’s Cas..” Castiel replied.
“Sorry, sorry,” Sam apologized. “Chuck called about his interview, but that’s not important. What’s up?”
“There was an issue with the printers,” Castiel answered. “The book covers, they’re uh…” he trailed off awkwardly.
“I’m on my way,” Sam told him.
He hung up and made his way down to the receiving bay. Castiel was at one of the tables with one of the large boxes of books open, a few stacked next to him, and packing peanuts on the floor.
“What’s the problem Cas?” Sam asked
Castiel wordlessly handed Sam one of the books and Sam snorted as he looked at the cover
“...At least it’s tasteful?” Sam added.
“We can not put these on the shelves, no matter how...tasteful,” Castiel replied. “Adler would have a fit. He’s still upset about that petition that went around a few months ago when we announced the reprinting of books 1-5.”
“Adler can suck on a lemon,” Sam said bluntly. “How many were printed?”
“Just a couple hundred for Chuck’s book signing on Saturday,” Castiel answered. “I tried to call the printers, but there was no answer.”
“Of course there wasn’t,” Sam sighed as he ran a hand through his hair. “Just...put these in my office for now. I’ll go over to the printers and see if I can’t give Lucifer a kick in the ass.”
Castiel nodded and started to put the books back in the box. “Oh, and happy birthday Sam. Did the flowers survive the night okay?”
“The roses? They weren’t delivered this morning?” Sam asked.
“Last night,” Castiel answered. “I saw them outside your door, so I put them in your office before I went home last night. Someone must like you.”
“What do you mean?” Sam asked.
“Well, lavender roses usually mean that someone has a crush on you. And Orange means that they’re proud of you. So whoever got them for you must like you and the man that you are. Or they just liked the color combination,” Castiel answered.
“Thanks...I think,” Sam nodded and went back to his office to grab his keys.
He drove to the printers and followed the sound of loud rock music to the offices on the second floor. He turned off the stereo and dropped one of the books on Lucifer’s desk.
“Real mature Lucifer. What’d you do? Find some fan art online and switch out the real picture we sent over?” Sam crossed his arms over his chest.
“Like it’s that different from the actual cover photo,” Lucifer smirked.
“You know this is illegal right? What if these had made their way to the bookstore instead? Sandover could’ve been sued by the original artist,” Sam told him.
“Cas would’ve caught it, don’t get your panties in a twist,” Lucifer rolled his eyes. “I’ve already got Crowley printing out the books with the right covers. You’ll have them tomorrow afternoon you fuddy-duddy.”
“You are a monumental pain in my ass you know that?” Sam said.
“Who? Me?” Lucifer smiled innocently. “By the way, this is for you.”
He set a wrapped bottle on the table and Sam picked it up cautiously. “What is it?”
“Just open it would you,” Lucifer told him.
Sam tore off the paper and raised an eyebrow at the bottle of tequila. “If you find your new age hard to swallow just add some tequila.” He read off the note that was taped onto the bottle.
“Consider it a birthday gift from me and Crowley,” Lucifer added.
"Thanks," Sam smiled a bit. "...and it was a little funny. But please refrain from trying to get my place of work sued."
"Yeah yeah yeah," Lucifer waved his hand dismissively.
Sam turned the stereo back on, on his way out, and drove back to work.
"Happy birthday Sammy." Gabriel thrust a small wrapped package into his hand. "Don't open it till you're alone okay." He winked and walked off.
Sam shook his head as he walked back to his office and set the tequila and Gabriel's present on the coffee table. He turned his computer back on and pulled up the website from the café that was down the street to order his lunch.
He looked up at the knock on his office door and saw one of the delivery people from the café.
"Turkey BLT and medium Caeser salad with a strawberry banana smoothie?" The guy asked as he read off the receipt.
"Uh...yeah…" Sam stood up and went to meet him. "But I didn't, I haven't even ordered yet."
"Looks like someone bought you lunch," the younger man said.
Sam took the food and tipped the guy before he went back to his desk. He looked at the roses, and at his lunch. He wasn't sure if he should be flattered or weirded out. He was too hungry to care and he dug into his lunch. He picked up Gabriel's gift and unwrapped it.
From the man that brought you Casa Erotica, the novelization comes a new series set in the steamy world of office romances. Featuring Dan Hanson and Sean Blythe.
Sam grabbed his phone and called Gabriel.
"Did you write an erotic novel about me and Dean?" Sam asked when the line picked up.
"Don't flatter yourself, Sam. Sure Dan's got your build and maybe Sean's got Dean's boyish charm, but that is where all similarities end," Gabriel told him.
"You realize if Dean sees this he is going to massacre you," Sam replied.
"Guess it’s a good thing Deano’s home sick today,” Gabriel mused before he hung up.
Sam hid the manuscript in the bottom drawer of his file cabinet and locked it for extra measure. He’d get rid of it later...after he read it. He pulled up the highlights from the previous night’s football game and used it as background noise as he ate his lunch and finished going through his emails.
He was getting ready to throw the trash away when he saw a message typed out in the notes section of the receipt for his lunch.
Enjoy the rabbit food Rapunzel. Don’t work to hard, it is your birthday after all.
He smiled and knew exactly who’d gotten him the flowers and his lunch.
--------------------------------------------
Sam hoped it wasn’t too late as he rode the elevator to the third floor. He had a bag of takeout in one hand and a few movies in the other. He stepped off the elevator once it reached the third floor. He shifted the movies to his other hand as he knocked on the apartment marked 3F and smiled when Dean answered the door.
He was wearing an old Led Zeppelin t-shirt with a pair of sweats and a large thick comforter wrapped around him.
“Sam?” He asked hoarsely. “What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to say thank you for the flowers, and for lunch,” Sam answered.
He couldn’t tell if Dean blushed or if his face was red because it was sick.
“Although you didn’t have to do that,” Sam added.
Dean shrugged a little. “I wanted to do something nice for your first birthday together...I would’ve baked you a cake but vertigo’s a bitch.” He broke off with a cough. “I’m glad you liked the flowers though. I almost went with red but it seemed a bit to cliché, and I didn’t want you to think Becky got them for you.”
“Shockingly Becky was pretty tame today,” Sam told him. “I went by that deli you like and picked up some of their chicken noodle soup. I also rented us a few movies, I would’ve liked to use the gift certificate Adler gave me for a way too overpriced steak, but we can go when you’re feeling better.”
“Sam...you really don’t want to spend your birthday night with a sick person,” Dean started to protest.
“Well, considering it’s my birthday, you don’t really get a say of who I get to spend it with now do you?” Sam asked. “Now get your ass back on the couch.”
“Don’t make me laugh, my throat feels like sandpaper,” Dean told him.
Sam walked into the apartment and shut the door behind him while Dean tried to clean up around the couch. Sam got one of the movies set up and grabbed a bowl for the soup, and joined him on the couch.
“Happy birthday Sam,” Dean told him. “I promise next year will be a lot better.”
“You know? All things considered, this one turned out to be pretty good,” Sam replied as he got comfortable.
“You wouldn’t happen to know why Gabriel asked me to pick between Sean and Sheene would you?” Dean asked as he ate his soup.
“Nope, no idea,” Sam answered.
“Such a weird little man,” Dean mused as Sam wrapped an arm around him.
Hello dear author! I hope you’ll have fun with our match. Feel free to draw from general or fandom-specific likes, past letters, and/or follow your heart.
Likes: worldbuilding, slice of life (especially if the event the fic focuses on is made up but canon-specific), missing moments, 5+1 and similar formats, bonding and emotional support/intimacy, physical intimacy, lingering touches, loyalty, casefic, surrealism, magical realism, established relationships, future fic (when in doubt, tell me what’s happening to them five, ten, twenty years in the future!), hurt/comfort, throwing characters into non-canon environments, banter, functional relationships between dysfunctional individuals, unexplained mysteries, bittersweet moods, journal/epistolary fic, dreams and memories and identities, tropey plots that are already close enough to characters/canon, outsider POV, UST, resolved UST, exploring the ~deep lore, leaning on the uniqueness of the canon setting/mood, found families, characters reuniting after a long and/or harrowing time, friends-to-lovers, road trips, maps, mutual pining, cuddling, wintry moods, the feeling of flannel and other fabrics, ridiculous concepts played entirely straight, sensory details, places being haunted, people being haunted, the mystery of the woods, small hopes in bleak worlds, electricity, places that don’t quite add up, mismatched memories, caves and deep places, distant city lights at night, emphasis on non-human traits of non-human characters (gen-wise, but also a hearty yes xeno for applicable ships), emphasis on inhuman traits of characters who were human once and have sort of shed it all behind
Cool with: any tense, any pov, any rating, plotty, not plotty, IF, unrequested characters popping up.
DNW: non-canonical rape, non-canonical children, focus on children, unrequested ships (background established canon couples are okay, mentions of parents are okay!), canon retellings, consent issues, actual covid (fantasy plagues are okay)
Les Cités Obscures: any
This is a very general “please, anything in the style of canon, just maybe with less thoughtless sexism” request. I want to lose myself in these cities again, and in the strange lands that connect them. I’d be happy to follow any of the known characters and/or OCs, or eschew characters altogether and write about the cities themselves. What caught your imagination in Brüsel, Xhystos, Taxandria, Alaxis...? The history of some cool building that was only marginally featured in one of the stories? Or an OC city! If you’ve got a favourite European city that doesn’t already have its obscure counterpart, please tell me all about it! Go big, go wild! What strange and classically surrealist happenings take place within its walls? Or even... outside Europe... Nerding out about architecture is of course very welcome. I would also love to read a story based on any Schuiten illustration, contextualizing it as if it were part of this ‘verse. Here’s a bunch of them, for example!
Ghost Trick: Cabanela
You know.. him. Dazzlingly OTT, untiring, rock-solid self-esteem, loyal to a fault, following a rhythm of his own, flawless intuition until it fails and it all burns down… him. I just want to see more of him doing stuff! The way he’s chill and open toward new people (like Sissel and Missile in ch15) makes him perfect to throw at most other characters and see how they react to the sparkles… I’d love some focus on how ridiculous his aesthetic is, half Saturday Night Fever half hardboiled detective half bubbly preteen (for a total of 150%) and yet he makes it work. Or how ruthless he can be, possibly for the sake of the people he cares for. The quote “The intimacy of big parties”. Him and Alma in the new timeline bonding over knowing (once Jowd has spilled the beans) but not remembering that terrible timeline. Some tropey scenario on the job. Snark-offs with Pigeon Man, by which I mean PM snarks and it bounces off him like water off a spotless white goose’s back.
Ship-wise it’s only Cabanela/Jowd whenever it’s not infidelity, Cabanela/Alma in what-ifs also if it’s not infidelity and Cabanela/Alma/Jowd for me (and Lynne/Memry and Yomiel/fianSissel on the side). There are a bunch of shippy prompts in all my past letters - I would however reiterate here that Jowd. is. the worst tease. always. Like, just saying, but assume he’s pining big time and Jowd and Alma figure it out - they’d make a national sport out of excruciatingly protracted teasing.
Conversely, Cabanela/Lynne and Cabanela/Yomiel are NOTPs especially from Cabanela’s side. So while I appreciate the thick tension of a good Yomiel VS Cabanela confrontation like everyone and their cat, and also really appreciate a roughed-up Cabanela, and I do love Yomiel in his own right… I don’t want Cabanela being into it. Adrenaline junkie he may be but this hurts and his coat’s a mess and there’s no perfect winning scenario so he hates every second of it. (JOWD being super into Cabanela being roughed up is another matter altogether and he should probably mind his own business. ...incompatible kinks, truly tragic. they’ll have to find some other common ground. they’re smart, resourceful, playful fellows, I’m sure they’ll manage)
Kentucky Route Zero: Donald kentuckyroutezero
I love everyone in the cast, all acts and interludes, and I am extremely into all the themes this incredible work of art ended up exploring. Agreeing with the overall doom and gloom up to Act IV, I was blown away by Act V’s strong affirmation of the importance of the arts and of the bonds we make and of carving up spaces for ourselves in capitalism’s wake. Donald was, indeed, not a part of any of that. Even the final interlude updates us on Lula and mentions Joseph, but the big guy is nowhere to be seen. So, you know, there’s fanfiction! He’s so static, defeated. I am fascinated by the chain of metaphysical spaces that goes surface -> Zero -> Echo -> Dogwood and even within that framework, the hall of the mountain king is like a hopeless dead end. Dude’s terminally stuck. So - once again, in the spirit of transformative works, how could he get... you know... unstuck? Did Lula’s momentous appearance in Act III shake him? Having a functioning Xanadu again, perhaps? How could he interrogate that oracle, what recursive wonders would it show him? If he decides to leave, what does it feel to be on the surface again after so long, or on the river perhaps? Maybe he is forced to leave by the flood, if not this one, the next... Having him meet any other character would be amazing. Past or future time spent with Weaver... seeing Conway again, changed... programmer guy chatting up musician androids... did he know Carrington from his college days or was Carrington only a friend of Lula’s?
As for Lula herself and Joseph too: “Flipping through the pages, Conway is able to gather that it’s a story about three characters: Joseph, Donald, and Lula. It’s something like a tragic love triangle, but much more complex. Some kind of tangled, painfully concave love polygon.” 😔 I ship them as a full triad, if you can nudge them in that direction, good. But I’m very open to non-romantic resolutions as well, going past their messy feelings to find each other as friends after so many years maybe. Or... a start. idk.
I’d be interested in fic that leans on the game’s adjacent genres: wanna go full-on American Gothic? Dip into surrealism? Take a leaf from Twin Peaks with tulpa / split narratives to explore the characters’ issues? I’m also open to AUs, real or through Xanadu. This also feels like a good place to stress that I really, really like caves.
And now for something completely different: FAQ: The “Snake Fight” Portion of Your Thesis Defense is in the tagset this year. I’d say that the crossover with the snake portion of Here and there along the Echo writes itself, but it would not be correct, as in fact I would like you to write it for me. Feel free to not feature Donald if you focus on this crossover instead!
Uru would be a fun crossover too, for Donald specifically. He’s very DRC-shaped in how he tilts at doomed projects which just so happen to be deep underground.
Pyre: Volfred Sandalwood
This is a Volfred solo, Volfred&literally anyone or Volfred/Tariq, /Oralech or /Tariq/Oralech request. I adore everyone in that Blackwagon+Dalbert+Celeste, so if you want to add a Nightwing or two to any prompt, please do! I also love all the Scribes and find Erisa a compelling tragic figure, while out of the other triumvirates, I’m “love to hate them” for Manley, Brighton, Udmildhe and Deluge and would not like to see them featured in sympathetic roles. fwiw I also enjoy Jodi/Celeste and Bertrude/Pamitha a lot!
I feel deeply for all of Pyre’s main themes - literacy, degrees of freedom, the fragile time that is the end of a historical cycle, nobodies rising up to the occasion, building a better society, and of course found family, “distance cannot separate our spirits” and all that jazz, and Volfred is squarely rooted at the center of all of them. I really really love everything he stands for, even if he’s overbearingly smug in standing for it. Just please tell me things about my fave. His relationship to the Scribes (as a historian, a some kind of vision, via *ae or once he’s a star himself)? A ‘forced vacay’ Downside ending where he looks at the Union from afar and keeps living in this strange transformational place? Life in a cramped Blackwagon that was meant for like 5 people tops and is currently eight Nightwings, a herald and an orb? Since he picked him for the job to begin with, does he respect and cherish Hedwyn as he dang well should? What does it feel like to try and Read a herald? Was he ever in danger, in the Commonwealth or in the Downside? What daring act of resistance did he and Bertrude pull off at some point in their past? It’d be cool if one of his old pamphlets came up at some point. Does he puff up as prime minister because he’s nervous, and who can see past his hyper-professionalism and lend a hand? Please roast him big time about the votes he assigns to the various Nightwings in his planner? What’s his attitude toward the flame’s purification (what with being a tree but mostly like, as a general concept. He did nothing wrong!) (well he definitely said some things wrong and sometimes oftentimes the ego jumps out, but his intentions did nothing wrong)? When did his calculating approach fail him? Something with Pamitha along the lines of that edit that goes “Can we talk, one ten to another?“/"I am an eleven, my girl, but continue”? Dude could easily be voted sexiest voice in the Downside - how much is he aware of it? Does he sing? I love how he bears his ‘reader’ brand proudly. And speaking of scars, I have to wonder, looking at Manley for comparison, if the shape of his head, with that massive crack, isn’t also due to injuries.
As a refrain from my general likes: emphatically yes xeno to both shippy interactions at all ratings and to gen explorations of what a Sap is like… I’d love to read all your headcanons.
Ship-wise, I enjoy him with Tariq as this kind of esoteric connection of minds, guarded words full of secret meanings, long contemplative walks together (is any external pov watching...?), Volfred’s Reader powers brushing against Tariq’s mind and getting weak in the knees at the starlit expanse he finds there, so unlike mortal thoughts. Tariq finds his individuality learning from him; Volfred presumably gets a transcendent glimpse of the Scribes. And I enjoy him with Oralech as pretty much the opposite of that, Oralech is so very mortal compared to him, such a precious, fleeting, burning life especially after his fall. Oralech’s idealism is very dear to me, it was their plan, their shared revolutionary spirit, I find it deeply moving. And I am very interested in seeing them rebuild their connection now that Oralech is back, changed, and in some ways he can learn to let go of his misconceptions and slowly open himself to Volfred’s love again, but in other ways that’s who he is now, with this deep-set anger, and what does it even feel to realize that you’re the symbol of the end of an era (the end of the Rites, the fading of the Scribes). I’m interested in both topside and downside endings for all of them, as long as they end up on the same side, the revolution was peaceful and they don’t angst too much about the side they ended in. Tariq can ‘find his way home’ in the near post-canon somehow or even be summoned again, as a different aspect of the same ‘moonlit vision’ that once inspired Soliam Murr.
Strandbeest: any
https://www.strandbeest.com/
I would just like words to go with these, please and thank you so very much. Worldbuild to your heart’s content! Specifically: I’m fascinated by the premise that the strandbeest are living creatures that evolve and adapt to their ecosystem. A world where life is just wind stomachs and sandy joints, and the tide that can catch you unaware. I would like a story that feels distinctly inorganic. The wonder that is the existence of these creatures. Their unique struggles. Weird and experimental if you like. With a mechanical focus, maybe?
I nominated four critters as a selection of the different cool things they can do - Percipiere Excelsus is huge and has the hammer mechanism, Suspendisse’s tail senses the hardness of the sand, Uminami is my fave caterpillar and the caterpillars overall feel like a new paradigm after a mass extinction event, Ader straight-up flies... but they’re all wonderful. If you want to focus on different strandbeest, please do!
Twin Peaks: Lucy Moran
Case fic but they don’t find out jack shit, someone disappears, David Bowie was there, it’s complicated. Fragmented, shifted, mirrored identities. New Lodge spaces. The risks of staring into the void for too long. Gentle illusions. Transcendence. The moon. Static buzzing. Any title from the s3 ethereal whooshing compilation used as a prompt, actually. Whatever goes on on Blue Pine mountain or the even more mysterious things that go on on White Tail mountain where exactly zero canon locations are found. Twin Peaks is all about the mystery to me, the awe of mystery and unknowability and the human drive to look beyond and the risks of getting a peek, and about shared consciousness and trauma taking physical form in an uncaring world. Go wild with the ethereal whooshing! But I also love the human warmth at the heart of it all, and sometimes it’s enough to anchor these characters and let them have a nice day. A fic entirely focused on some instance of coziness against the cold chaotic background of canon would be great too.
For Lucy specifically, a big draw for me is how canon (...s2 need not apply) empathizes with her way of processing the world. Not just Peaks, but On the Air’s protag who is basically a Lucy expy also gets the narrative completely on her side and that’s great. And I love how in s3, her focus on the small things around her is always echoed by bigger, climactic events beyond her horizon (bunnies / Jack Rabbit’s palace, chair order / Garland’s chair, her first scene talking about the two sheriffs / doubles everywhere...). It feels to me like some kind of off-kilter mindfulness and I love it. She’s also got a loving husband and an amazing son, which, in this economy and also this canon? Damn. The one functional family, imagine that. I am not interested in focus on family dynamics, but singularly, either Lucy/Andy or Lucy&Wally are great - in particular, I’m interested in how strange they are and yet they make it work. With the ruthless critique of traditional family structure that’s all over canon, maybe they make it work specifically because they’re not doing any of that. A bit like the Addams family... but... not goth...? Anyway. I’d love to see Lucy interact with and maybe strike a friendship with any character she’s never shared a scene with in canon! In the tagset, there’s Diane for some secretaries bonding, Audrey because??? why not?, Albert because it’d be an epic enemies to friends slowburn, some version of Laura in the future, if we’re feeling really daring maybe even some version of Coop in the future, still fragmented... or anyone you want! Outside the tagset I’d be curious about Hawk, Margaret and maybe Doris in particular, I think, and Phil, and Nadine and the Invitation to Love fandom in general (Frost says it still airs - did it get as weird as TP s3 did?), but if you have an idea with someone else, absolutely go for it!
Canon-specific DNWs: any singular Dreamer being the ‘source’ of canon, BOB (let alone Judy) being forever defeated in the finale, Judy being an active malevolent presence in the characters’ lives, clear explanations for canonical ambiguities, ‘Odessaverse’ being the reality layer, the Fireman’s House by the Sea being the White Lodge, whatever Twin Perfect’s on about, Cooper/Audrey, Cooper/Laura
I got a little carried away but I hope that this was a fun read! Let me know what you think! Also sorry that there’s no “keep reading” and if the format is screwed up. I’m posting from mobile.

A bubbly laugh escaped your lips as you bowed extravagantly. You had definitely gotten a little carried away while playing the songs, but hey, you never got to play them all the way through in front of others so you took the opportunity.
The 4 men standing behind the glass of the studio had the weirdest combination of facial reactions. Brian was delightfully amused, Rogers face was a mixture of surprise and joy, Johns mouth was slightly agape with awe and Freddie’s face was light up brighter than a Christmas tree with excitement.
“That was brilliant darling!” Freddie exclaimed throwing open the doors, with no regard for the 3 men following behind.
“Bloody fantastic,” Roger added. Which came to a shock to you.
“Wait and didn’t you say that you hated disco?” You prompted, quirking a brow at Roger.
“Careful Y/N, he’s a bear and disco is the stick your poking him with,” Brian laughed leaning against the piano.
“Excuse me what, poking a bear? With a disco stick?” You asked quizzically raising a brow. The metaphor clearly not making sense.
“Right, sorry Y/N, it’s an expression. It’s like Roger is a bear and you are there with him in the forest, but not actually in a forest, and he’s upset—“ John blabbered on before Freddie cut in.
“John, no one cares about the bloody metaphor, we care about the music! Isn’t that what we’re here for? Now come on Y/N, teach a rock band how to be Disco!”
The next hour included the 5 of you talking about goals and wants for the week to come. You had agreed upon teaching them an ABBA song part by part on Thursday and play all together on Friday morning, the rest of the day was for what you wanted it to be. And of course a farewell party that night. And then sinfully early Saturday morning it was time to make the journey home, but you couldn’t dwell on it, there was music to be played! And fun to be had!
Thursday:
All the boys had shown up first thing in the morning. Even Roger who wasn’t supposed to play until 1 had come. The recording room was filled with energy and anticipation. You had sworn the boys the secrecy between each other. No one was to talk about what song you had chosen and the sound was switched off, but they could still see the session.
Each member got a 2 hour session alone with Y/N with an hour break for lunch at noon.
Freddie was first up, it had nothing to do with the fact that he was the most excited to play, outwardly at least. John was definitely the most excited, but he was shy and would just have to wait his turn. Freddie insisted on watching you play piano and then trying to copy afterwards. Needless to say you were blown away by his talent. Only an hour had passed and he had mastered his part on the Grand Piano. The rest of the hour was spent with you two messing around on the keytar and teaching him some of the words, along with the harmony’s. Again you were shocked with his range and ability to hit the notes that the female back up singers had trouble with.
Brian was next.
“Look, I am so sorry that there’s not more guitar to this song, however I stayed up late transcribing the violin part, which I think you will make sound really cool,” you confessed at the beginning of his time slot.
Instead of being disappointed he was thrilled and relentlessly complimented your work and teaching. Your heart soared with every compliment Brian gave. If you didn’t know him any better you would have sworn he was flirting. But alas he was just being the dorky fascinated man he was. John, however grew annoyed with it fast. He was jealous, even Roger stopped making fun of him for it, which was rare.
Brian was also a quick student, though the pace was different. You two sat on the edge of the platform stage and each with a guitar in hand. Within the last half hour you had also ended up giving him some lyrics to accompany you and Freddie. Your voices were going to blend fantastically, at least you thought so.
Finally it was lunch time. You’d be lying if you said you hadn’t been starving during Brian’s session. Lunch consisted of lots of coffee, brought from Sweden in your carry on, sandwiches and french fries.
“You mean chips Y/N,” Roger mocked your American English.
“I most certainly do not, they are French Fries, not chips or crisps,” you fought back.
“You see that is where you are wrong,” Brian said joining the discussion.
“Brian! I thought you were on my side,” you gasped mocking offense. You picked up a handful of fries- excuse me chips- and tossed it at the boys. Hitting John square in the nose.
“You did not just do that! What have I done to you Y/N, I said nothing!” John squeaked.
Roger grabbed some and flung them in your direction in retaliation. Soon individual fries were flying across the room. Deaky somehow ended up at one end of the room, you at the other with one fry in your hand.
“Come on Deaky, come on,” you said under your breath like a small prayer before throwing it perfectly into his mouth.
“Yes!” You screamed out in joy running over to John throwing your arms around his neck in celebration. In the adrenaline of victory you impulsively pressed a kiss to Johns cheek. Both of your cheeks burned crimson red. Thankfully Roger was too busy pulling out his wallet to give Brian the cash he had just lost after betting against Deaky’s fry catching abilities and didn’t make a comment.
Eventually you all calmed down and sessions resumed. This time with Roger. Who was surprisingly pleasant to work with. Even if he had spent a majority of the time fumbling around and poorly flirting. At one point he kept dropping his drum sticks, which lead to you sitting on the stool pressed up against him, his hands being kept closed by yours. He would whisper a dumb comment in your ear, which lead to a laughing response or smack to the back of the head.
John was fuming, internally at least. With the sound off he couldn’t hear your consistent rejections towards Roger’s advances, which just made his jealousy worse.
“He always gets the pretty girls,” he mumbled sneeringly and threw his feet up on the coffee table.
However he didn’t have to deal with the antics for too long, it was his turn, finally.
You two sat as you had with Brian, yet your knees touched ever so slightly. Both of you noticed, but said nothing.
You weren’t gonna lie in, you picked out this song because of the bass line, and the fact that you knew John would excel at it made the decision final.
The two of you played in intimate unison. By the end of it you were laughing and teasing each other. You offered gentle touches as corrections, which juxtaposed the threats that you had given Roger a mere hour ago.
The rest of the band also seemed to notice the difference and the fact that you hadn’t been playing for the last twenty minutes. Brian was the only one who truly understood it though. He certainly was going to keep an eye on the two of you, and maybe suggest a bet.
The day slowly came to an end. Dinner was burgers and chips, you had given up on the fight of chips vs fries, and of course there was a celebratory beer. 8:00 pm rolled around far too quickly, but it was time to call it a night. All of you were tired of being in the studio for 12 hours. Especially you, since you had been the only playing for almost all 12 of those hours. Flopping down on the hotel bed was only slightly less rewarding than teaching the boys their parts.
Friday:
Getting out of bed at the sound of the cheap hotel alarm clock was almost too easy. Today was sadly your final day in England for this short visit, but it was also the day where all of your hard work came together. Hopefully. At least you all had fun.
You threw on a pair of black bell bottoms and a white tank top, even though it wasn’t that warm out, you had learned your lesson from yesterday. Wearing a knit jumper is not a good idea when working with Queen.
To your surprise all of the band arrived before you. They had come to practice their individual parts. Which made your heart melt. And once you arrived each of them had a few more questions and you answered. Around 3 you gathered in the recording room.
“You boys ready to get your disco on?!” You called out as if you were trying to get them excited. They already were.
“Of course we are, so what are we waiting for Darlings?” Freddie replied, starting off the first few piano notes of the song. Brian joined in soon after. Then Roger with an enthusiastic smile. You and John joined in together, him on the bass, you on the keytar.
“Half past twelve” You Brian and Fred harmonized perfectly.
“There’s not a soul out there— no one to hear my prayer———-“
With a symbol crash you began the chorus line.
“Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! A man after midnight— won’t somebody help me chase the shadows away—-“
At that moment, Queen had embodied dancing queens. Everyone had gotten engrossed in the music and was dancing along with their part as much as they could. Naturally, John excelled at it. The song ended with a final symbol crash. And then a moment of time where everyone’s breath could be heard, then laughter. A Rock band had just done a damn good job of being a Disco band.
“Wow, I think this is your guy’s calling, screw rock and roll!” You laughed, grinning widely.
“Careful, Queen might just come kick ABBA off the charts with a disco track,” John teased.
“He’s right, no one is stopping us! Watch out darling, Freddie joined in with a wink.
The rest of the day was spent teasing each other, lounging around and messing around. In the 3 days that you had spent with Queen, you all had become quite close. Close enough where they divulged their favorite pub to you. Eventually you moved from the studio to that pub, which was conveniently down the street. It was packed and the band preforming wasn’t half bad. It was no Queen. But it did the job of creating a upbeat vibe. Freddie found a small booth in the back corner while Roger left to go get a the first round of drinks. Unsurprisingly the round included tequila shots. Soon you were three shots in and tipsy. You thanked the booth for being small, especially since it gave you the opportunity to be closer to John. He was also feeling a little extra confident and placed his arm discreetly around your waist.
“Jag vill bara säga tack —,” you began before realizing the boys around you looked dumbfounded. “Right, English is a thing,” you laughed. “As I was saying, thank you for everything, I loved being here, I’m glad I got to come,” You laughed raising your glass in a toast.
“We loved having you darling!”
“Come back any time!”
The night carried on in celebratory fashion. More drinks, lots of bad dancing, laughing, terrible jokes, and more untranslatable Swedish phrases that slipped out. Your pretty sure you confessed your attraction towards John. Thank god he didn’t understand the language. Though he understood body language. At around midnight you and John went out for a breath of fresh air. Brian had originally planned on joining but just sent a wink instead.
Soon enough your lips were on his. I’m perfect unison. Your arms wrapped around his neck loosely, his around your waist. A mix of lust and admiration filled the air as he took a step back leaning against the brick wall, in turn pulling you closer.
“You know, I’ve been waiting to do that since the second you started signing,” John sighed smiling at you.
“And I have too,” you smiled back. Your cheeks turning a light shade of pink. The tipsy-ness from the alcohol had worn off. Late night London and being alone with John had made you want more. Every part of you wanted to stay but you knew it wasn’t going to happen. You loved your life back in Sweden and your job was all you could ask for. It was too bad that the man you dreamed of was in London.
The band came out after an hour or so and insisted on walking you way back to your hotel. The trip back was mostly occupied by trying to get John to memorize your number, and consoling Roger because he had to leave the girl he was flirting with. Everyone got a tight hug goodbye, John got an added kiss on the cheek, then you left for the airport 3 hour later. Still a little tipsy and in love, but you got your ‘man after midnight’ in the end.
July 10, 2017. Back in Horta. Crazy party weekend!
Sorry it's been a little while! Ok July 5... It was another great Airbnb experience. We had a lovely Italian couple, Cristina and Andréa, who are campers and hikers. They have spent a few days in the Azores already, camping for a couple days and then finding an Airbnb to take a break. We picked them up in Horta and took them across to Madalena, Pico. We anchored and had a nice sleep except the church bells ringing every hour. And then the ferry first thing in the morning blaring his horn quite unnecessarily haha. But they said they had a great sleep. They brought sardines to bbq for supper and they were delicious. I made a salad and we had some coleslaw left. Add a bottle of wine and we had a lovely meal. The next morning we just had jam and fresh bread rolls for breakfast with a a glass of orange juice...after our coffees first of course lol. They just wanted something light because they had another busy day of hiking and camping ahead of them. We took them to shore and said our goodbyes. They were awesome. Very sweet and intelligent. Mike and I went for a snorkel shortly after they left. I tried to get some footage but the water wasn't very clear. We did find a couple "Venus Ears" which have the mother of pearl inside and little holes that go around the edge. It's in the shape of an ear of you hadn't guessed. I will post a pic of our collection. Then we decided to sail out of Madalena and head for Velas. The guys in Horta port authority told us there was a race from Horta to Velas on Saturday (July 8) and that is was gonna be a big party. The weekend was the 30th annual cultural festival and was going to be a huge celebration. We had a great sail over, perfect wind strength and a beautiful sunny day. My heat rash has finally cleared!!! I can actually be in the sun without feeling like I'm going to scratch my skin off. Now I am still dealing with about 8 mosquito bites on my feet which are lasting longer than I would have hoped. But still yay! We arrived in Velas and checked in. I really like the harbour master here in Velas. He's a cheerful guy, very nice and speaks very good English. He's always smiling and helpful. It makes our experience so much more enjoyable. I think It's my favourite place so far. Anyways he reiterated the festivities that we heard about and we went out that evening. Thy were doing a cultural song and dance performance in traditional clothing. It reminded me of folklorama. But folklorama is pg rated. These guys know how to party. A row of beer shacks, selling sangria, beer and shots for €1. Everyone has a drink in their hand as they wander through the streets. We went to the "Bamboo Bar" and I had a real caipirinha, not the watered down stuff I've had at folklorama. This drink tasted like tequila and was strong. I only needed one haha. As we were walking around we saw all these pieces of paper scattering the road. They were little blank white squares. We came upon a Dutch woman who explained that you buy 50 rolled up papers for 1€ and then unroll them hoping to win a prize. They do it as a fundraiser for local groups like the church choir and other things like that. Such a cool idea, although I'm not big on the littering. Like everyone throws their garbage on the ground and in the water. It actually kills me to see it. Even in the harbour, they are throwing cigarette butts left right and centre. And smoking is so popular here, so there's a lot of butts. But It was still a great night. We retired early compared to everyone else who i could hear still going around 3 AM when I woke up. Friday we went for an awesome hike up the island. Sao Jorge is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. We walked up the steep roads and got the best views down toward the water. Wow. I took a picture of Mike and I and couldn't believe how tanned my face was. I posted a comparison of us from 2 months ago almost exactly...wow! My face is so brown. I love it. I wear 60 on my face all day but that sun is strong. Anyways we made it up to the big grocery store that we didn't know was there. They had a lot better fruit selection then we were able to get in Horta before we left. I got more peaches and my red plums. And huge red peppers. Like 2-3 times the size of the ones we have at home. And they are so cheap. It's so cheap I love it. I just want to have a fridge full of fruit and veggies. Yum yum. We made our way down back to Velas, down the steepest road I've ever seen. A road that cars actually go up and down. It was bloody steep as Mike would say. That night we got to see some live music. A group of about 5 guys and they all sang. They were great. Again we called it a night before everyone else. I guess we are not partyers like the Portuguese. Saturday July 8. We see the start of the SUP race that is from Sao Jorge to Pico Island. Probably about 10 miles. What a crazy distance. They had a couple escorts in motor boats in case anyone needed help. The wind was crazy gusty and our anchor had dragged a bit. Then some guys came out and told us they were setting up for a jet ski race and we needed to move the boat for a few hours. Mike and I probably lifted anchor like 6 times on Saturday. We had a hell of a time getting a good bite in a spot that was out of the way with the crazy wind. It was a pretty exhausting day and we weren't able to get on land all day. Finally after the competition was over we moved into our final spot and dropped anchor for the last time that day. Then I remembered that they were doing a bull run at 6 PM. it was now 7:30. I felt bad that we missed it because I knew Mike really wanted to see it. That was the whole reason we were coming to Velas this weekend in the first place, before we found out it was a festival weekend. We went to the centre of the festivities and watched a parade of nice old cars, and then motorcycles and then quads. It was loud but good. Then a marching band came through and we chomped down hamburgers from one of the food trucks. Oh it was so good. We came back to the boat and I heard the party going all night. Today was another sunny hot day. The wind wasn't as bad thank goodness. We went for a nice walk to the beach area and got a few nice pics. We came back to the boat pretty soon and hung out. Mike went to spear us a fish because we had yet to catch a fish for us to eat. Even though we ran a line all the way across the ocean and I fished in Nova Scotia. I did catch a tiny thing in Horta about a week ago but we threw it back and stopped fishing because we were just catching the same little guys. He did spear us a nice junk of a fish, and he put it on the rocks for a minute while he went back into the water. Well not two seconds later a bird came and stole his catch. Haha bad luck. I picked Mike up in the dinghy and rowed is back to the boat. Then we had cucumber, cheese and mayo sandwiches, since we had no fish haha. We were just hanging out when I noticed a lot of people were gathered on the pier. It wasn't the bull run, but it was a bull fight. Mike and I rowed over and had a great view from the water, along with a bunch of other boats. 4 bulls in total. The first and the last one were the best. They would chase people toward the edge and the people would jump off the pier into the water to dodge the horns. The more people that had to jump the louder the crowd cheered. They were trying to get the bull to run in the water and they almost got one of them, but it managed to keep its footing on the edge. I'm glad none of them ended up in the water. I felt bad for the bulls already and that would have been worse. But the crowd enjoyed the show and it was nice to partake in the festivities. Although, I really don't get the point. Clearly a macho guy thing haha. We enjoyed seeing the bulls nonetheless and I was happy Mike got to see his bulls lol. This evening we have had major progress! We caught our first meal! Haha. Mike pried off a few limpids off the rocks and we used heir meat as bait. We ran our two fishing lines off the dinghy while one of us rowed. I caught one of the cute blue and yellow fish and we let him go right away. They are small skinny fish. Then Mike caught a flat bony fish and we let that go too. I figured we would just end up catching and releasing because we were having no luck. Mike caught a small silver fish and let it go. Then he caught a nice size brown fish. This was a keeper! I was getting no bites while Mike kept getting strikes. He caught another silver fish and this time we kept him. I'm glad we did because I think the silver one had more flavour then the brown one. But the brown one had a lot more meat. Before we finished I had caught 2 brown and one silver and mike had 1 of each. We had 5 fish for supper. Mike gutted them while I prepared a sauce to coat them in before BBQing. I started the rice and we finally had our first free meal! It was delicious! Like I said I enjoyed the smaller silver fish more. But the brown guys had a nice chunk of meat on them. I think we both feel very accomplished and satisfied. The more fish we can catch and eat the better. Meat is cheap here but it's not free compared to the fish. Anyways it's the wind down of the festival and we are heading back to Horta tomorrow to pick up our next guest. A family of 4 from Belgium. These guys were our second booking and I think we are going to have a great time with them. They want to do some sailing which means a little extra cash in the pocket. I might even be able to sell a couple keychains or bracelets since there are two kids 11 and 13. It all adds up. We have had our hot chocolate night cap and are off to bed. Loving these islands more and more everyday. The more familiar we become with them the more I enjoy it. Knowing where the best fruit or baked goods are. It's a nice insider feeling. It's been a month since we've left Nova Scotia and I'm not looking back haha. I'm staying with the sunshine as long as possible. Don't forget to follow our Facebook Page at Coconut Seaways and our Instagram @coconut_seaways.
I have the powers of The Simurgh (Worm), due to being designated by her as her replacement. This blurs my vision- a lesser version of her inability to
see the present?- but I could make certain parts of it (single columns of a transparent "grid") clearer with focus. This may have affected something
else as a result when I made use of it. If The Simurgh is hurt, I have the option of repairing it (from afar, through the bond), but if the damage is
too severe I will have no choice but to take over.
I'm in an auditorium with many other teens/children, who've been enlisted/recruited by a cult-like group. The group requires them to complete schoolwork in a very odd way, and shows them a "Tomato Surprise" fighting game, the setup of which is familiar to me, but better through out. I allow the guy on the left of me to rest his hand on mine because he likes the contact, and he then becomes a black girl with braids named Jupiter. The auditorium is
suddenly empty, leaving us alone. Underneath the cloak she's wearing are oxygen tubes and four green bottles attached to her belt/waist. I then wake up
(for real), and think to myself that I need to hurry up and finish the dream before falling back asleep, whereupon the dream resumes. Kaneki (Tokyo
Ghoul) takes my place, and Jupiter's skin melts. She survives, if barely, which may have been part of "Kaillou's" plans.
I and a few others are near a large farm-like complex where the Nichijou characters are running around. I'm quite convinced that you don't get hurt
falling off of stuff in dreams (without actually being aware this is a dream, somehow), and attempt to prove this by jumping off a tall tower, three
separate times- once, with large plastic box lids in my hands for drag. This does not, in fact, hurt me. Another guy, on the other side of the farm,
can't seem to bring himself to do it.
Upon waking up to my alarms over and over, I repeatedly had the same impression of the end of a dream involving DDLC, many small rainbow squares, and my having the ability to manipulate reality. I kept using this ability to change the "ending" (of the dream) to be simpler, because the alternative just
seemed too complicated.
2/3/17: (Sick) (Repeated Wakeups) (Powers Dream)
After being stuck and unable to move for the longest time, I somehow turn this into a literal weapon (large pyramidal shaped metal object). Others are
in the same situation as me, and they do the same. We're in some sort of containment area/underground enemy base, and upon emerging into a golden room (the view is 2D), I hear a huge "thrumming" noise. It turns out that I have superpowers (telepathy and spirit sight), and that was the thoughts of
something huge. Later, I'm sitting in a room with two of my captors looking at me. Either they send forth an enormous red energy lance that spears
through my right eye, or something behind me sends it out, spearing through my head/eye from behind, but through my captors as well.
2/5/17: (10:30-6:15) (Sick)
There is a large white hotel/conference-like building where we (Northrop Grumman?) are holding a food banquet. I pass Marion at the vegetarian table,
and go upstairs to the things I'll actually eat. I somehow end up in an entirely different building (the basement of a house in a residential area), where I eat with several people I don't know. I exit, and find that the world has a very surreal feel to it, and everything is tinted slightly golden yellow. A floating, grinning white mask stares at me from behind, which I laugh at before strolling down the street towards a downward slope. As I head down it, I tug at my legs, which are pale metallic yellow, and made of pointed symbols and machine parts. There are weird creatures made of white orbs that look sort of like snowmen called "natives". The scene then zooms out to show Akko (LWA) holding up a charm of one.
There is a "mentor" Kuzuhamon (Digimon) who cares for/trains a "Flaredramon" (actually a Flamon, who may or may not have been me) inside of Dad's
house. Kuzuhamon gets extremely angry at Flamon for some reason, and starts "training" him by attacking him with brown energy construct versions of
various Digimon. Flamon tries to run away, de-digivolving step by step with every hit, until he de-digivolves all the way down to "Kuramon" (actually
a Dorimon). Kuzuhamon suddenly becomes much nicer, which Dorimon enjoys, but he's experiencing time much faster now, to the point that several days go
by without his mentor moving. He runs away for real, re-digivolving as he does, and encounters a field full of Digimon. They point out Piedmon in the
other direction (was a goal of Flamon's to hunt him down?), but he doesn't care, and just keeps running into the sunset.
Me, Dad, some guy with bluish hair, and some girl with sort of bronze skin and brown hair have a real treasure map, which we set out to discover the
treasure of. After passing through a city at night and a mall (where I have a frustrating interaction with a "pen-phone"), we come to a twisting path
under a pitch black sky, which passes through areas of tall brush visible basically only in outline, everything is so dark. This place is utterly
terrifying, to the point that there is a literal SAN meter in place, and all of us are certain we are going to be eaten. Despite that, we make it
through the path with no incident, until we reach the end and accidentally step into a lake we can't see. All of us feel a sharp, cutting feeling on
our feet that makes us think we just got bitten by snakes, and hurriedly pull back. Our eyes begin to adjust, and it becomes apparent those were not
snakes, but pirahnas, which share the lake with anglerfish, _____, and mermaids. We debate over their gender for a little while, as we're not quite
sure where to go right now. Eventually we decide we need to go underwater after all, despite our reservations. Again, this goes better than expected,
as it's not really underwater beneath the lake surface, leading us to end up in a fascimile of my room. We again find ourselves at a loss for what to
do, and after several minutes I end up digging at my carpet, which is covered in pictures of tiny penises. It turns out there are small pieces of black
plastic and metal that look like part of some larger component beneath it, which we gather together with plans of reconstructing it. We then decide
we're done for the day, put some recycles in a large bag, and leave... to the rest of the house. It's still light outside (only 2:00 PM), and Dad has
disappeared. The three of us look in a mirror and a song is sung, followed by a rendition of Namae no Nai Kaibutsu, as a love song.
A large, muscled black woman throws two giant sword "fish" to shore from underwater. She becomes famous as the first ____, transgender weaponsmith over time, who does commissions, but none that are just for the sake of the user "looking sexy". I'm a bit confused by this, as the line between "cool" and
"sexy" is rather indistinct, and ponder it for a bit.
2/7/18: (???-5:45)
I and some others are on a colorful (fluorescent) island, trying to get off of it. There are many obstacles and dangers on the island, such as a tribe
of people who ambush and turn us into trees if we wait in one scenario. It is possible to "outbid" the chief however, and stop them. If not, I'm left
as the last to be revived/untreed, by which time everyone outlevels me (9-10, as opposed to 4).
I start taking gymnastics again at a center with a bunch of exercise bikes. This time, there is archery mixed in (at the same time), making it far more
difficult. I'm told I was born under the "sign of the vine", which is an apple. Usually archery is apparently a girl's concern, since it's the main
method of attack/defense if her wedding turns into a fight. I become a girl with short, dark hair halfway through explaining this, complaining that the
"apple" basically just means on the wedding night "do not eat unless clean/unstained". I am now IN a wedding dress, standing on a table while I talk to a guy sitting at it.
2/9/18: (1:??-8:45) (Powers Dream)
Subtly eldritch hallway course, with stuff like a book which dark purple hands emerge from that grab you, which you need to shake off, sentient exits,
and other inanimate-but-not stuff. I accidentally seal off the exit because I looked at/used a binder in the wrong way, which is bad. Others gather in
the other room at the end, as do I. If the hallway can no longer be completed in a single bout/one long stretch, I'll be turned into a toy car. This
does in fact happen when I can't fix things, but thankfully Amethyst (Land of the Lustrous; not the one we see in the show) still knows about/remembers
me despite time/the world readjusting, and builds an intricate addition to the hall for me, consisting of a series of spinning, polished blocks built
into the walls that send a ball rolling down to "complete" it, turning me back to normal.
I start out the dream as a gem (Land of the Lustrous), talking to someone about how we've surpassed the need for gender, in an apartment building. I
exit it, and encounter large drops of honey on the road, which I find strange. I'm now just me, heading down the road towards the "Little JJ" (Jean
Jacket) shop to get clothes. There are some people talking about a real Zero Escape style event, who I call out to and talk with briefly before
moving on. I then go to a museum/park or something with many sandstone buildings. I recycle a root beer bottle I brought with me, and enter. Near a building, I hit my head somehow, and accidentally use telekinesis on a huge block of something out of my immediate sight but nearby. I know someone is unhappy about that, as I'm supposed to keep my abilities secret. Annoyed by this, I start levitating another large rock and wing it around in eight different directions. I then mass manipulate a bunch more, right out in the open. The organization that wants me to keep things secret won't let me turn myself into a girl for some reason (which I could), so I'm feeling vindictive. I cackle inwardly.
2/11/18: (1:??-6:45)
There is a "blossom festival" celebrated by monks, wherein they carry giant iron discs down neighborhood streets. Others can also run back and forth
between their homes and the temple multiple times to receive enlightenment. Their temple is more of a wooden complex, and when I get there, someone in
the back tries to stop me from moving further in.
There are "feminine timelines" for Ranma, wherein he is or becomes a girl at least semi-permanently for various reasons. In a mall, she chases after
Happosai, who is threatening to use the "Yowl of the Demon Cat". Ranma corners him in a window, whereupon he blows everything up. The severed rainbow tail of a god (looks like a mermaid's) lands in the wreckage.
A ship pulls into port. Ranma drives a motorcycle through shallow water to Wolverine and a girl training to be Wonder Woman. Ranma threatens Wolverine into training with rocks.
All "planes" of magic have been based upon a single one, that made them all for fun/fiction. Its inhabitants look like cloth creatures and puppets,
with a ruler named "Lord Lubrante". We manage to beat him, and progress to the next area.
2/12/18: (1:01-6:45)
I am playing a game that is actively trying to kill me, where every step/necessary action is dark and creepy in some way. One of these involves going outside my house to find thousands of tiny black creatures with bright white eyes staring at me. They giggle, and try to fade me out of existence.
Another is to go out into the driveway in the dark and dig blindly in the soil with a knife for something that it turns out is actually in the mail. The package is in Chinese, and contains a question, the answer to which is written in the sky ("____ cloud computing"). There is only one step left after this.
I'm an anime-girl with curving pink hair down to the small of my back, which narrows at the end and looks almost like it was painted with watercolors.
I'm named "Sayori", and probably was in fact some version of the Sayori from DDLC. Inside of a giant, lengthy structure that looks still partially
under construction and floats a few feet off the ground, I do some stuff for others involving pictures of me ("lessening"/thinning the number thereof?),
then slide down a large, chunky red triangular thing that looks sort of like a tongue to get to the bottom. I transform/turn into a girl with long
purple hair, wearing a dress of some sort. I use my hair to glide into the "girl's side", which is a section at the very back of the structure with a
pale and royal purple color scheme. I really like how convenient it is to glide places like that, and really don't want to give it up, even though I
know I should. I find Yuri (DDLC) in the area, and talk to her, now myself again but wearing pink jeans for some reason.
Taylor (Worm) is on a deserted island, by her own choice. Leet somehow gets in contact with her over the phone, which she's pissed about, and she
consequently threatens Number Man for letting Leet do so or giving him her contact information. He replies that "thinking in real time" is rare, which
is something Leet possesses, hence why he allowed it. Leet is annoyed the "latex" (webs) Taylor sold him have stopped working, which is clearly his own
fault. Taylor gets fed up and tosses the shoes of the two mercenary guys Leet sent as proxies into the water, just past some playground equipment I'm
hiding near. She retreats to a nearby cave where a velociraptor mother nests, and one of the guys follows. I quietly follow both of them, wanting them
to notice me but also wanting to be mysterious. The cave is mostly puddles and pebbles at first, but becomes a dull, dusty auditorium. Taylor talks to
the guy off to the right, while I settle down a little further back. Taylor then leaves to find one of the two baby raptors, and the guy calls out to
me. Perry (Phineas and Ferb) abruptly pops in, and I recognize him as such only because his eyes widen. I laugh, and talk with someone on the other
side of the room, as tons more people from Phineas and Ferb pour in from nowhere. This makes me laugh even more, as this is supposed to be a deserted island, and I can't figure out how they even got here. I mention to someone offhand that none of them even asked about me when I showed up, as the auditorium renews, gaining red carpets, bright lighting, and gold walls. A "light fight" conducted with flashlights ensues.
2/14/18:
Mall, time travel allows us to save a laser ray exposure victim, flies and maggots saved someone else by way of Trelawney (Harry Potter), there's a
short, long sleeved, purple and white jacket with stars on it that I want, Mom refuses to believe the house is going to be set on fire by a drier
explosion (which we time travelled back to avoid) without details.
2/15/18:
After some sort of accident, four people are reconstructed in bodies not their own. They were based on pictures from a manga/light novel someone in the group had been writing, as well as a picture of a parent in someone's case. Mine (I wasn't part of the group at first, but then was) looks kind of like Ashley from EGS, and was based on the "dark magic" sister from the manga who wore long, ornate dark dresses and kept her hair in a fancy updo. Later, we wander through a Japanese city, where zombies are wandering around, though we only see two. Japan apparently did this to itself. We enter a building and go into a top secret room in the back, where a lady we know is waiting at a table for us. She was partially responsible for the body reconstruction.
2/16/18: (2:00-9:00) (Change Dream)
I'm Mia (La La Land), but with red hair. Apparently I'm getting married, which I formerly wanted, but am now quite unsure about. 800 demons will be
attending as my guests (what was I doing BEFORE this?). I try on a dress (THE wedding dress?), which is a shiny green "culture doll" (or "culture
thief"?) design. I'm concerned I don't know how to dance, because I'm NOT Mia, I'm me, and I know I am. Earlier, I was on an island covered with wheat,
stick bugs, and many other animals. My "husband" gave me honey flowers, which smelled great, and we walked down a wooden "bridge" on the ground. Later, a giant whale creature and a small "1/1" beluga thing are on my side as Hex-like troops/creatures at the edge of an island of ice, where the ceremony
is going to take place. The giant whale goes nuts when attacking, crashing through EVERYTHING, the ice and the ceremony area included, in just three
lunges. It turns pink and cartoonish, and a woman's torso sprouts from its forehead, yelling "It's mine, all MINE!". The whale then leaves, leaving
everyone in shock, besides several of the demons who foresaw this. I can't help but be a bit relieved by this, as the wedding will at the least be
postponed (and possibly outright cancelled) by this, silently thanking the woman I assume was my stepmother-to-be for her intervention.
2/18/18:
Oneshot-like game, inside an old house, return later to find a previous mini-boss, a woman with long ears/hair extending to the sides, a koi-like color
scheme (white, black, and orange), and tubes coming out of her, she has turquoise/pink/yellow colors on the overworld map (while not fighting her),
"one of the few things to give me hope" (a quote from her), secret ending involves her, to get it Undyne (Undertale) and a wizard ghost must first be
appeased, followed by her.
2/19/18: (Powers Dream)
There are time travel watches, which I have one of, but seem to have lost. As a result, I resort to "rewinding" by simply dying instead. I and someone
else go to live at an apartment, which is a "fixer upper" (a gray, crumbling, destroyed concrete complex). Later, I sneak into a building with a group
of others (including Mineta from MHA), going through two of the five special "hub" rooms (they have energy lines going out from their centers and
interconnect with the others) in order to get to a normally inaccessible area. Mineta goes into the hall, sticking to the ceiling in order to scout, but
we get caught anyways, and Ectoplasm enters the room we're in and attacks. He demands to know (from me) who killed "Scarlet", a girl with long red hair
in a ponytail who used a sword to fight, telling me that "I know you know". He's right, as I know from a previous timeline, which I try to explain but
don't do a very good job of. Eventually I do get to the point and tell him it was "Laokhen" (Laoshen? Laorhen?), a man with a child's appearance and
wearing yellow robes, who uses many short blades to fight. I explain the time travel and my missing watch, returning to Dad's house to try and find it.
I THINK that I took it to my house and left it in my room.
I'm Taylor (Worm), with a power similar to Sundancer's, but the sun is created around me, protecting me while also serving as offense. I'm practicing
my powers with the Travellers, who attack me (while I float with the sun around me) with some sort of sparkle beam and some other ability, noting that
"she still hasn't moved" when I remain still. I continue to not move even after that comment, because I'm feeling tremors for some reason, which I
continue to feel even after waking up for a short period.
2/23/18:
After I try to enter a bathroom, I end up falling through a giant vertical rock tunnel into the Earth, back down towards the "Green" (as in the Pokemon
game) area. There is a girl "falling" (floating) alongside me, possibly Ciel from Hero Oh Hero, who explains why we are falling, but not in a way that
makes much sense or satisfies me. We pass by a Yugioh duel occurring on a rock pillar on the way down.
There is a regenerating man/entity with a weird, organic sort of black/green shell body. He can turn parts of himself separated from his main body into
other parts of himself, including those with more mass than they have (miniscule pieces into full sized organs and such) so as to fix himself, and can
reconglomerate by using them. The tiniest piece left over means he'll just come back- a robot guy disguised as human by artificial skin pounds his head
practically out of existence, only for the pieces that splashed everywhere to turn into lungs, then snakes, which lunged at robot guy before
recongregating and becoming the man again.
2/26/18:
There are giant Pokemon in the style of the Pokemopolis episode, one of which we confront in a clearing in the woods. The other is an enormous Abra
with wings, which we see through a hole in a cave's ceiling. The same "clear/block the river" plot is being used here.
By brushing an electronic chip with a toothbrush given to me by the Steven Universe gems, I can teleport anywhere I so desire. I use this to freak out
people/my new neighbors by teleporting into the middle of their group at a canyon.
A robot replaces Dad, which I instantly become aware of despite its attempt to disguise itself. I can't turn my head, and ask Robot-Dad for help,
whereupon he reveals himself, and I tell him I already knew that. He builds a wireless phone (for me?), but I will have to get through a barrier first
and absorb a near-equivalent of Sauron, which terrifies our maid (we have a maid?).
2/27/18: (1:45-6:45) (Powers Dream)
In a building (in space?), I descend a staircase into a dingy corridor, with many doors on both sides. All of them have monsters behind them, which I
have to take on with nothing more than an iron sword. It takes me a while to actually enter the corridor, because I'm thinking how to approach the task
before me. I can earn skills by beating different monsters, associated with their species/type. Unfortunately, in the throng I incur, I beat a
samurai-esque guy who grants a "sense everything in a small radius" skill, followed by another monster who grants a "heighten senses" skill, which is a
very bad combo because it makes wounds excrutiatingly painful. Still, I manage to make it through the fight, and exit the corridor to a giant, metallic
green complex/building, which I need to get to the bottom of (or at least near). There's a mayor-like guy in an alcove on the way down, and killing him
will let me evolve. Later, I'm on a bridge/rectangular platform affixed to a wall (with no obvious way to get on it), which bends at a right angle in the
middle and extends out into midair. It's set up to be mostly linear for a Hebiko-esque boss with over 10 arms (in a circle around her body), who
emerges from a large, electro-globe like machine atop a pile of screwed together metal at the end of the platform. I personally want to fight her AS
Hebiko, and may be able to become her eventually, what with the evolving ability. The "game" had planned extra features for replayability, but they
were never implemented, so the "Faux-Hebiko" fight doesn't have any variants.
It had been about a week since Riley took the pregnancy test, and she had gotten it verified at the doctors. Though she still hadn't found a way to tell Farkle she just kept chickening out no matter how hard she tried. She was even avoiding Maya the best she could, because every time she saw her she wanted to talk about telling Farkle. She knew she needed too, but she was so freaked out at this point by her own thoughts she didn't how to bring it up.
Finally Maya brought up a suggestion that Riley decided to try out. She told her to Try it out on Zay first, and maybe see how that went. So Riley called Zay, and invited him to have coffee with her at the little cafe a few blocks away from her town-home. He agreed which she knew he would so she was already there sitting down waiting for him.
When Zay came in he could already see Riley's knee bouncing, and how she was twirling her coffee cup that something was on her mind. Taking the seat from across her he automatically put his hand on her's smiling . “Okay hun let it out to Zay, and Oh Isadora says hi I got to skype her today.”
The first smile came to her face since he had shown up at the Cafe. “I am so happy you got to hear from her, and you guys are still going so strong. I'm still sorry she's so far away when is the next time you see her?” She was now trying to make Zay forget something was wrong with her by talking about Isadora.
“I see her in about a month, but stop trying to distract me! So what's going on?” He Wouldn't fall for Riley's tricks that easily.
It felt like the room was closing on her as she put her eyes on zay's. “I'm...” She stopped swallowing trying to get rid of the feeling something was caught in her throat. “I'm Pregnant” She said inaudibly as Zay leaned in blinking at her.
“You are going to have to speak louder Riley, and Breathe it's good for you.” At this point he is actually getting kinda concerned she might faint on him as he watched her.
Deciding she couldn't say it Riley pulled out a pen from her bag, and grabbed a napkin. She quickly wrote what she was trying to say then Pushed it towards Zay. She froze up at how wide his eyes got as his mouth dropped open.
“You're PREGNANT?!?” Zay yelled loudly being caught off guard, and forgetting he was in public.
Reaching over Riley covered his mouth glaring at him “Zay you have to be quiet!” Taking a quick peek around the cafe noticing most people didn't actually care making her feel only a little better.
“With a baby Right?” He was still In shock, and he wasn't thinking straight so he just said the first thing that came to mind.
With a sigh Riley stared at him dumbfounded “No Zay with the Easter bunny. Yes a baby..”
“And it's Farkle?” He knew that one was stupid, but he couldn't stop it from coming out.
This time Riley rolled up the napkin throwing it at Zay. “Oh my god Zay. Yes it's Farkle's. What is wrong with you?”
Letting it hit him he chuckled afterwards trying to settle down a bit now “Sorry it was just Wow...a baby. How did Farkle take it?” He watched as Riley got all awkward playing with her coffee lid as she bit her lip. “You haven't told him have you?” She shook her head no. “And you were practicing on me?” She nodded her head yes. “Okay then I am going to grade you. That was a D, and Why haven't you told Farkle anyway?”
She pouted at him focusing on that he gave her a D “But I'm Riley I get A's. Can I do anything to raise my grade?” In a deadpan voice so Riley knew he wasn't joking. “Only way to do that is to tell Farkle. Then I'll pass you.”
Riley dramatically threw her hands in the air.“Never mind I'll accept the F!” She let her head fall on to the table with a small thump.
The sound letting Zay know he got a text, and when he read who it was he shook Riley's arm while texting back. “Um..Riley I just told Farkle he could meet me here to talk. So if you aren't ready I'd head out. I think you should stay tell him though.”
Lifting her head up Riley blinked a few times while getting up. “I promise I will I just need a few more hours. Can you tell him too come home for lunch?” She placed a 5 on the table for her coffee, and muffin, and once she saw Zay agree she made her way to the store then home.
Quietly Zay sat waiting for Farkle starting to wonder why everyone was talking to him today. He asked for a refill, and ordered a coffee for Farkle already knowing he would want one. A few minutes later as the waitress dropped off the two coffees Farkle came in a look of uncertainty on his face.
“I think Riley regrets moving in with me.” Riley had been off for a few weeks now, and It was really bothering Farkle at this point. He had even tried to bring it up, but Riley would just avoid it. He just wanted to make her happy, and felt like he wasn't doing that right now. He slumped into the chair across from Zay running a hand through his hair. “She told she was seeing you today, and I guess I was just wondering if she said anything.”
Zay sighed as he got up going over to Farkle patting him on the shoulder. “All I can say without Maya coming after me is it's not that. I promise it isn't bad though...Well maybe it's not bad...” He started to panic not really knowing exactly how to word it. “It's something...just...It shouldn't be bad. Well I'm going to go, and Riley said too meet her at home for Lunch.” He ran out before something slipped leaving a very confused Farkle behind.
(about an hour, and a half later.)
At exactly one pm he told his dad he had to go home for a bit too see Riley. His dad happily let him go since Farkle hadn't really been concentrating all day. He was too worried about what was going on with Riley that he had even blanked out during the staff meeting. He made his way in to the house, and hung up his keys following the sound of rustling in the living room. As soon as he turned his way towards it he eyes grew wide at a banner reading “Our first home!” The rest of the living room was covered in orange, and purple streamers. Some glitter in the shape of butterflies, and hearts sprinkled in some places. With Riley standing right by the couch wearing a red tea dress, but even though she was smiling Farkle could still sense something was wrong. He put a smile on though letting her go through with whatever her plan was. “This is amazing Princess. You did all of this in 90 minutes?” He strolled over still taking in the room when he felt Riley's hand slip in his.
“Yes, but come on I got you a present.” Riley felt as if she couldn't fully breathe as she led Farkle over to the couch. She had decided to at least make the room look special when he got the news. They both sat down, and Riley grabbed the bag placing it in his lap trying to hide her trembling hands. “Now the presents may not make sense until you get to the last one.” Standing she started to rock side by side a bit her eyes never leaving the bag.
For a moment Farkle wanted to question it more, but he saw her nervous she was doing her adorkable side rocking. Decided he really wanted to know, and he didn't Riley to be uncomfortable any longer he just started to dig in pulling out the contents of the huge bag on his lap. It was really heavy as well which made him even more curious as he got out the first item.
A small can of purple paint that he didn't question too much so he sat it down going to the next thing.
Some border wallpaper with planets on it even Pluto. Maybe she wants to make one of the rooms space themed, but why would she be acting so off if that was it.
Next he found a package of stars you can stick on the sealing that glow when you turn the lights off. Okay maybe he was right, but still it didn't feel as if he was.
He removed a box next that read “My first science kit.” That made him glance up Riley who swallowed her face covered with her hand. She was right he was lost at this point, but he would only figure out by getting to the bottom.
Reaching in again this time he pulled out a children's book. It was The Wonderful Things You Will be, and it was the book they had decided one day they would read to their future kids. To hopefully help them always know they could be whoever they wanted to be. He's feelings starting to shift as he kept trying to figure out what he was missing, and how these presents connected. Knowing the last item would reveal it he just quickly removed it needing an answer.
Now in his hand he was clasping a positive pregnancy test, and before he could react Riley spoke “So it turns out I'm pregnant. I've been trying to tell you for awhile now, but I finally thought of this. Also I'm Sorry Farkley.”
He dropped the test to the ground, and his eyes lifted slowly to her's feeling as if the world had stopped “First why are you sorry?” Getting up as he waited trying to stay blank not knowing how she felt yet.
“Because this wasn't a part of the plan. We had this perfect plan, and we spent so much time on it. Now it's all ruined, and we will be back at square one. I also really want to keep the baby, and you shouldn't be forced too. I just don't want you too look at me, or our future child one day in regret. I love you more then you will ever know Farkle, but I know this came out of nowhere. I just want you to know you are free to your own choice, and I will accept it. Though I will admit I'm really scared, and just want you to hold me.” Tears started to fall down her face her heart racing as she stood there one hand on her stomach subconsciously.
Swiftly making his way over to Riley he put his hands on each side of her face while. Leaning so they were eye level a serious, but loving look on his face. “So this is why you've been acting weird since we moved in together?” He watched as she nodded softly starting to sniffle. “You had me so worried Riley! Don't get me wrong I know a baby is a huge deal, but it's our baby. So we had a some plans, and despite how much I love plans. I love you even more, and a baby how could I ever be upset about that. How could I ever regret that the love of my life is having our baby. Our life together is my future princess, and this just means our family coming a little sooner then expected. This is us though, and we can do anything we set our minds too. “ He starts wrapping his arms around her waist tugging her in close. “Everything is going to be okay, and I want this too.” after that it hit him what all the other stuff was, and a wave of excitement took him over. Checking too see that Riley was staring up at him speechless now, but with a smile he let her go dragging her back over to the Table.
“Farkle what are you doing?” Riley finally spoke up that happy sparkle back in her eye. She couldn't help, but giggle at the man in front of her who was now resembling the excited eighth grader who often never stopped talking. “So all this stuff is baby stuff! You even got hi..he..ba..I'm just going to call the baby minki. We can make minki a whole space theme room! We can make a planetarium, and teach minki that Pluto is always a planet.” He stopped and faced Riley again with a grin. “And I am going to be here through every step even the morning sickness! I am your number one in all of this.” He placed his hand on her stomach trying to calm himself a little. “Though I have to admit I don't really know anything about any of this. So I will begin some research so I can be the best father to be for you two.”
Riley out her hand on Farkle's laughing happily at his excitement. “I love you so much, and you don't need to research everything babe. It's not as if I know much about pregnancy either so we will have to learn together. I think the first thing we should focus on is telling our parents.” She had said it so calm now. She was still scared, but now thinking about the future which was getting her excited.
“Oh I didn't even think about that...” Farkle shifted uncomfortably with a huge swallow. “Just promise you won't let me die before I get to become a father.” Internally Farkle was freaking out, but he had just calmed down Riley. He knew he'd freak out when they actually went to tell them, but right now he could hold it back. “How about we tell my parents since we have to go pick up paperwork Friday? Then we will go to your parent's house after we dig me a grave in our backyard. At least I'll be close to you, and the baby.” He could feel his blood pressure rising at this point a million images of how Friday would go running through his head. He was not looking forward to this at all, and he wished they could just skip it. Knowing they couldn't Farkle just started rubbing Riley's stomach with his thumb trying to keep his mind on happy thoughts for now.

Racing Roundup: F1 Stewards Have to Stop Handing out Stupid Penalties
The JDC-Miller Motorsports “Red Dragon” won the Prototype-class race at Watkins Glen last weekend and will be at CTMP this week. Photo by John Larsen/photograffics.com
One of the reasons people don’t like the Canadian Football League as much as the NFL is because there is a penalty on nearly every play.
No team in the CFL can play a set of downs without flags being thrown everywhere.
The NFL refs can sometimes overdo it but most times they leave the flags in their pockets and let the flow of the games go unimpeded.
The people who run the CFL should take note and tell the referees that people pay to watch the players, not them.
Today, I am making the same suggestion to the FIA. Jean Todt has got to call a meeting of the Formula One “stewards” and tell them to back off. They issued two penalties in particular at the weekend’s race in Austria that were, in a word, stupid. Todt – and I can’t think of anyone else – has to crack down and reset the guidelines for what merits a penalty and what doesn’t. Otherwise, the whole business becomes not only suspect but damaging.
The two penalties I want to discuss today involved Sebastien Vettel and Lance Stroll. In the first instance, Carlos Sainz was through to Q3 and was trying for another fast lap – who knows why? – when he came upon Vettel, who was on a cooldown lap. Sainz had to swerve to avoid the multi-time world champion and clipped the rear of his car, damaging the wing of his Renault.
Vettel said he couldn’t see Sainz coming because the placement of the mirrors on the halo makes it “impossible” to see behind. In addition, his team, Scuderia Ferrari, didn’t tell him Sainz was approaching at a great pace.
Now, I do have to say this: I think the only time drivers should ever be driving slowly in the racing groove is after the checkered flag is thrown at the end of a Grand Prix. Every other time the track is hot during a race weekend, be it during a practice or qualifying, every driver out there – and particularly a world champion – should know it is possible that somebody is “going for it.”
Having said that, being handed a penalty of three grid positions (from third to sixth in the end) following a situation in which there were no real consequences, other than the need to replace a front wing, was pretty draconian. Yes, Vettel finished on the podium but he could have won that race, particularly after both Mercedes drivers were eliminated, and the difference between third-place points (15) and first place (25) could very well prove to be the difference in the world championship, considering how tight everything is this year.
If it’s clearly an attempt to sabotage another driver and it’s done at a point in time during qualifying or the race to have a significant impact on the outcome (remember Michael Schumacher parking his car near a barrier in Monaco in 2006, thus interrupting a qualifying flyer that might have won pole for Fernando Alonso?), then the stewards have every right to throw the book.
But if there’s no real harm or foul, they should stay out of it.
Ditto the situation with Lance Stroll. With four laps left in Sunday’s Grand Prix, Stroll wouldn’t move over to let Sergio Perez past despite being shown the move-over flag. He’d just gone to the pits for fresh tires and was holding his own. It also turned out that his team, Williams F1, had told him to fight to stay in front of Perez. So Lance was caught between a rock and a hard place: obey the blue flag or do as you’re told by your team. So he went with the team.
Now remember: there were four laps left. Whether he got past Stroll or not, Perez would still finish seventh in the Grand Prix. It didn’t matter. If it was near the beginning of the race, fine. Stroll should have been reprimanded. But four laps to go? And Perez will still be seventh?
So the stewards, obviously enraged at the impudence of this child, this 19-year-old little rich kid, came down on him like a ton of bricks. I mean, were talking overreaction here (much like Maple Leaf Nazem Kadri being suspended for three games in the Stanley Cup playoffs after he missed the guy he was trying to hit). They penalized Stroll 10 seconds and put three demerit points on his superlicence.
Take that, you little so-and-so. That’ll show him.
My question today: how can Formula One continue to be the No. 1 motorsport in the world when you have nonsense like that going on? If the crime really and truly deserves a penalty, fine. Otherwise, the stewards should stop trying to make themselves look important.
As my friend Floyd Patterson used to say on CKWS Radio in Kingston, other views are welcome.
WEEKEND RACING, PAST AND FUTURE
It having been a long weekend (happy Canada Day, eh?), the rest of this report will be a combination of what’s significant and what’s coming up with a look back at what happened on the circuits and speedways of the racing world:
As you know, Max Verstappen won the Austrian Grand Prix, with Kimi Raikkonen second and Sebastian Vettel third. For a link to an all-details story, please click here.
Bernie Ecclestone has attended the last two Grands Prix, in France and at the Red Bull Ring. He looks marvelous. His hair is as neat as ever and he’s now sporting a Don Cherry-type moustache and goatee. His glasses are dark-rimmed, he’s immaculate in his appearance and his shoes are as shiny as a mirror. His ex-wife owns the Circuit Paul Ricard, site of the French GP (she got it as part of the divorce settlement) and he’s tight with Dietrich Mateschitz, owner of the energy drinks company and the racing circuit. That explains his presence.
However, Bernie is very much a player. He owns – on his own – several GPs, Brazil being one. I would not be surprised if he still owns all, or most of, the one that’s closest to our hearts here in Canada (hint, hint). And, frankly, with the way things are going with the new company (the disaster that was spectator comfort and access in France and the growing uproar in Miami at the idea of racing in the downtown there), I won’t be surprised in the least if the guy who made F1 what it is today is soon back playing a more constructive role.
This arrived in my mailbox from my friend, Rick Moris:
We’ve heard about the amazing lap that was run in a Porsche 919 last week at the Nurburgring, but have you seen the video? If you want a thrill..

Formula Electric has found another sucker, er, city to host a round of its series. This time it’s Sanya, China. They used to race in Beijing until that city got smart – along with the rest of the big towns of the world that have gotten rid of his faux series – and told it to get lost.
Don’t forget that Canadian Tire Motorsport Park will be holding a preview of this weekend’s IMSA-headlining Mobil 1 Grand Prix Wednesday night from 5 p.m. till 8 p.m. at Yonge-Dundas Square. Ten drivers – Jan Magnussen, Ricky Taylor et al – will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs. There will be pit stop competitions and give-aways. I hear Ron Fellows might be there. See you Wednesday evening at the Square.
The excitement of world class sports car racing comes to downtown Toronto at Yonge-Dundas Square with Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s (CTMP) RaceFest, Wednesday, July 4, 5 pm to 8 pm. RaceFest features prototype & GT race cars, drivers and autograph sessions. There’s chances to win tickets to see the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at CTMP, July 5-8. It’s Canada’s biggest sports car race of the year. (CNW Group/Canadian Tire Motorsport Park)The IMSA cars were in action at Watkins Glen last weekend. The league’s PR people report that the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen featured outstanding competition throughout all three classes and somewhat surprising winners in at least two of them. (And don’t forget, all these cars and drivers will be coming to Old Mosport.)
The No. 99 JDC-Miller Motorsports “Red Dragon” ORECA LPM2 drivers Misha Goikhberg, Chris Miller and Stephen Simpson took the first victory of the season for an LMP2 car and the first since Renger van der Zande and Marc Goossens took the No. 90 Visit Florida Racing Ligier to the win in the penultimate round of the 2017 season at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
In the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class, No. 66 Ford GT co-drivers Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller capped off a tremendous weekend at Watkins Glen for Ford Chip Ganassi Racing. And in GT Daytona (GTD), Turner Motorsport took its first Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen win since 2014 with the driving trio of Don Yount, Markus Palttala and Dillon Machavern prevailing in the No. 96 BMW M6 GT3.
The Verizon IndyCar Series, which will be racing in Toronto at Exhibition Place in the Honda Indy Toronto a week from this coming weekend (the Toronto Star is publishing daily stories now through the race weekend in the Sports section), will first be racing at Iowa Speedway on Sunday.
Before the headline race, a company called Classic Racing Times will present “Classic Indy Cars at Iowa.” Featured cars are expected to include the No. 64 Gilmore Brawner/McGee Scorpion driven by the late Art Pollard in the 1971 Indy 500, and a scrupulously-detailed reproduction of the last front-engine car to win at Indianapolis, A.J. Foyt’s 1964 Sheraton-Thompson Special No. 1. Also, on display will be the No. 16 1979 Leader Card Watson Champ Car built by A.J. Watson. Watson was known as the “Wizard of Indy” where cars he built dominated from the mid-’50s through the mid-’60s. Retired racer Pancho Carter will be a special guest. Carter was the first triple crown winner in U.S. Auto Club history (midget, sprint and Silver Crown division titles in one year), the winner of the 1981 CART race at Michigan and the pole sitter for the 1985 Indianapolis 500.
In NASCAR Monster Energy Cup racing, Kyle Busch won the race Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway but Kyle Larson nearly stole it. I didn’t see the race but veteran observers called it the best of the 2018 season, to date. For complete details, please click here.
Well, the Super Bowl is here, which means a ton of artists will be on hand performing all across the city, although many of you won’t be able to get close enough due to enormous crowds. Solange, ZZ Top, Lizzo, and Polyphonic Spree will all perform here this week while most of us attempt to get around all of the chatter and mess. Houston, your next seven days are all planned out.
On Wednesday you can start off at Discovery Green and surrounding areas for the Super Bowl Live event featuring Americana rockers Buxton. Far from heroes in this neck of the woods, the band’s last album Half A Native is one of the best albums a label ever botched the release of. Aside from the swooning notes from that album, the group brings it live for the all ages event that gets going around 3 pm with sets from Second Lovers and more with additional information here.
Walter’s will host the synth heavy jams of LA’s popular Cold Cave. Mixing dark wave, noise, and synthpop, Cold Cave reminds me of a lot of what Great Britain offered up in the ’80s. Known for an energetic live show, their latest release, The Idea of Love from last year, is pretty enjoyable. The new wave goth pop of LA’s Drab Majesty will be on hand as direct support an opener and his live sets are supposed to be a real trip. The all ages show has doors at 8 pm and tickets between $15 and $17.
Youth Code. Photo: Dais Records
Eastdown Warehouse will have the return of Pittsburgh’s Code Orange. The kind of hardcore these guys bring isn’t usually my deal, but their latest album Forever does hit pretty hard. This show is highlighted with a direct support slot from LA’s Youth Code is worth checking out. Youth Code has always kind of reminded me of a modern day mix of Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson, without the cheesy factor, and their latest release Commitment To Complications is pretty killer. Arizona’s Gatecreeper opens the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $12 and $16.
Over at Club Spire on Main, you can get up close and personal with world renowned DJ A-Trak. He’s been turning heads since he was 15 and a stint as Kanye’s DJ didn’t slow him down by any means. His sets are known to get people moving and his latest release, last year’s In The Loop: A Decade of Remixes, can definitely get you moving. The 21 & up show has locals but none mentioned yet with doors at 10 pm and tickets for $20.

Thursday you can begin over at Discovery Green for the Super Bowl Live event that kicks off with the hip hop of Houston’s INGRID, who’s latest album from last year, Trill Feels, is pretty hot. Lizzo will bring her intense and groovy new album Coconut Oil to life afterwards before a set from jazz pianist, Robert Glasper Experiment. Of course, Solange will close out the night for the all ages and FREE event that gets going around 3:00 pm with extra sets from Children of Pop, Bang Bangz and more on hand.
Over at Mucky Duck, the often laconic voiced sounds of Nashville’s Minton Sparks will swing by to perform. Adding a spoken word type set full with lush Southern notes, Sparks will make you think while she melts your heart. Her last release, 2014’s Gold Digger is an album everyone should hear, and her live sets have been acclaimed from coast to coast. The 21 & up show has doors at 7 pm and tickets between $22 and $25.
Boy Harsher. Photo: Courtesy of Artist/Travis Weitzman
Satellite Bar will host the synth oriented darkwave sounds of Massachusetts’ Boy Harsher. This two piece dropped a pretty amazing EP in 2014 called Lesser Man, only to drop a full length last year called Yr Body Is Nothing that went darker and harder. They’re known for an intense live show, and they’re an act you should check out if you’re a fan of the genre. The dark synthwave sounds of Houston’s Tearful Moon will provide direct support while the always intriguing strangeness of Ak’chamel will go on prior. Andrew Lee of Lace will perform a solo set as opener for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets for $7.
Fitzgerald’s will have a barn burner when one of the craziest acts you can see, Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers will swing by to perform their blend of blues, Americana, rockabilly, and Southern gothic tunes. These guys never keep things the same and they even employed Duane Denison of Jesus Lizard at one point. However, now they’re just a fist pumping four piece with a killer new album called Agridustrial, and their live shows are always like a crazed tent revival set to music. The throwback tonk of The Delta Bombers will provide direct support while the rockabilly energy of The Brains will go on prior. The outlaw country of South Texas’ The Barnyard Stompers will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $15 and $20.
Walter’s will have the fun side of Ween, when a set from Dean Ween Group stops in to drop a set. Ween is the one in the band who plays the more pop oriented songs, and his latest album The Deaner Album from last year feels like a ton of fun from start to finish. Amandla will provide support for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $20 and $24.
NOTS. Photo: Ground Control Touring/Chad Kamenshine
Rudyard’s has the weird punk of the Memphis based all female four piece, NOTS. Known for an intense live show and critically acclaimed sounds, their latest album Cosmetic is worth lending an ear to. Austin’s John Wesley Coleman III will provide direct support while the intriguing dance meets indie rock of Houston’s Keno Sims will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $10 and $13.
Friday things get heated when you can start at Market Square Park for live tunes from Dollie Barnes, Young Girls, and more. The all ages and 100% FREE event gets going around 11 am and ends around 3.
Catch Fever. Photo: Uncredited/Courtesy of Artist/Facebook
If you really want, you could head back over to Discovery Green and the surrounding area for more of the Super Bowl Live shows. Robert Ellis, Leon Bridges, The Suspects, and more will all be on hand, as well as performances from Catch Fever, Vodi, -Us. and Wrestlers. The all ages and FREE event gets going around noon.
Believe it or not, you can steer away from all of that madness and head out to the Woodlands to catch funk legends WAR in the Big Barn at Dosey Doe. Seriously, these guys wrote the book on funk, they can still bring it when they perform, and hits like “Low Rider,” “Why Can’t We Be Friends?,” and “Spill The Wine” should be more than enough reason for you to head out and catch them while you still can. Your ticket includes dinner which is served from 6 pm to 7:30 pm for the all ages show with tickets between $98 and $158.
You Blew It! Photo: APA Agency
Walter’s will have a set from Florida emo rockers, You Blew It!. I hate this band’s name, but contrary to what some think, I dig their sound. Their 2014 album Keep Doing What You’re Doing got them a larger audience, but their latest Abendrot is where the love should be focused. The album finds the band incorporating a more adult sound while hanging on to emo core elements from their past, resulting in a record that you should check out. The indie pop of All Get Out will provide direct support while the emo of Tennessee’s Free Throw will open the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $12 and $17.
If you’d rather get your laugh on, you could attempt to get into one of the two shows at Fitzgerald’s featuring the always funny Hannibal Buress. Whether you know him from his comedy specials, his time on The Eric Andre Show, or his albums, Buress never disappoints. The 7 pm show is sold out, but there’s an all ages show with doors at 10 pm with tickets between $35 and $40.
Kay Weathers. Photo: Josh Cobb
Kay Weathers will return to town with a set over at Nightingale Room. While I’m pretty sure that Main street will be a nightmare to navigate, you should still swing by to catch her perform. A crazy light show and adornments galore, her debut EP Songs For Lucy is pretty amazing. She’ll have the hyper energized jams of -Us. on prior for the 100% FREE 21 & up show with doors at 7 pm.
If you’d rather steer from music altogether, then you could head to Hardy & Nance Studios for the Cheap Date show. Over thirty five artists will have art on display, all for a $20 price to take home, and the attached market means that you should definitely swing by to grab some things to decorate your spaces. There’s more information here for the all ages event that gets going around 7 pm and runs between $3 ad $5.
At Proof Rooftop Lounge, Long Beach rapper and weed aficionado Snoop Dogg will drop by to perform an exclusive set as well as drop a DJ set. Of course I don’t need to give you the man’s resume, though his latest release Coolaid from last year is worth giving an ear to. The 21 & up show has a limited number of tickets between $50 and $175 with doors at 8 pm.
Jody Seabody & the Whirls. Photo: Uncredited/Courtesy of Artist/Facebook
Rudyard’s will have a headlining set from Houston’s Slow Future. Though the band has only been around for a couple of years, they’ve stayed on track with a pretty solid release on last year’s First EP. That might be enough for people, but the insanity of a set from Jody Seabody & the Whirls will be on as direct support, and as someone who’s caught them multiple times; be prepared to be impressed. The highly charged fuzzy indie rock of Houston’s A Sundae Drive will be on as openers for the 21 & up show with doors at 9 pm and a measly $8 cover.
On Saturday you can keep the Super Bowl goodness starting at Market Square Park for an opening set from Dayta, followed by performances from Handsomebeast, El Lago, Vodi and more. The all ages event gets going around 11 am and it’s 100% FREE.
Over at Discovery Green and the surrounding area, you can get groovy with another day of Super Bowl Live. A headlining set from Houston legends ZZ Top will be preceded by a performance from Gary Clark Jr as well as one from Houston’s The Suffers. There’s also sets from Dollie Barnes and more for the all ages and FREE event that gets going around noon.
The Phantom Royals. Photo: Uncredited/Courtesy of Artist/Facebook
At Continental Club, you can check out the multiple vocal chorus sounds of The Polyphonic Spree. The Dallas group lead by Tripping Daisy’s Tim DeLaughter has never disappointed with their mix of trippy pop and multiple vocals, and their live shows are always amazing. While their last album Yes, It’s True is do for a follow up, their first two releases The Beginning Stages of… and Together We’re Heavy are what they’re known for. There are also sets from The Phantom Royals, A Fistful of Soul, DJ Mikey and more. Things get going around noon and it’s 100% FREE.
If you just want to avoid all of the madness around football, then you could swing by The Archway Gallery to see and hear the collaborative effort between Sandy Ewen and her mother Jane Ewen. Art, music from Sandy’s trio Etched in the Eye to perform will all be on hand alongside gratis beer and more. The all ages show gets going around 7 pm and it’s 100% FREE.

Vinal Edge will host the Women In Punk Fest featuring art punk, old school death punk and more. The show, featuring sets from No Love Less, Mel Hell & The Texas Mod Crushers, Screech of Death, Supergrave and Clare, has more information here. Things get going around 7 pm and the all ages event is 100% FREE.
Later on at Continental Club, the queen of rock n’ roll, Wanda Jackson will swing by to play to a more than likely packed house. Jackson hasn’t really slowed down from a career that began in the 1950’s. Realistically, Jackson is reaching that age where this might be one of your last chances to catch her, and her 2011 album The Party Ain’t Over was her kind way of saying she’s not going anywhere. The 21 & up show has doors at 10 pm and tickets for $25.
On Sunday you can finish the Super Bowl Live series with a headlining performance from Houston’s purveyors of Latin ska, Los Skarnales at Discovery Green and the surrounding areas. I don’t need to oversell these guys, I’ll just say that they’re performers that actually perform while redefining a sound they’ve nurtured since they began. Grupo Fantasma is also set to perform alongside others with things getting started around 11 am for the 100% FREE all ages event.
Negative Gemini. Photo: Courtesy of Artist/Facebook/Uncredited
Monday, Walter’s will host the unabashed and unadulterated electro pop of Brooklyn’s George Clanton. Clanton has skewed all over the electronica genre, and while his live sets have always been entertaining, the electro pop world is where he really shines. Lucky for us, his new album 100% Electronica is as pop as it gets, echoing the likes of OMD and Aha. The chillwave dreampop of New York’s Negative Gemini will bring plenty of dance grooves on during her set as direct support, while Houston’s XLO will bring a textural nature to the show beforehand. A DJ set from Children of Pop will make things ultra groovy as openers for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and a $10 cover.
On Tuesday the crew from Bootown will bring another edition of their video clip rewritten series Neo-Benshi back to The Secret Group. The show, featuring people reworking the script of a video in the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000 is always worth making it out for. The all ages show has doors at 7 pm and a paltry $5 cover.
If you just want to escape, then you can forget all about the madness of the NFL festivities at Walter’s for their VHS Night. A double feature of sorts will play, maybe some tape swapping for those who still prefer the bulky film casing, as well as drink specials and more. The doors are at 8 pm, it’s all ages, and the FREE event has more information here.
That’s about all that’s happening around town this week. Don’t forget that it’s going to be bonkers, there will be law enforcement everywhere, as well as drunken tourists with the keys to a rental car. So be mindful, be safe, and use your best judgement for everyone’s sake.
