okay my mind is reeling from the latest episode i'm going to fucking explode this is one of the best episodes... period
so cecil's dad... left when cecil was born. For what reason, it's hard to tell. The narrative certainly seems to be setting it up as a concious choice, framing him as an absent father rather than just a dead one. The line "It’s not incomprehensible that two living, physical people could haunt each other." makes me really think the Gershwin-Palmer relationship was not a healthy one in any way.
But either way, he left, and maybe he died after he left, or maybe he left because he died.
But he's gone, and it broke their mother. She mourned him, she was forever haunted by him, haunted by the him she saw in Cecil. It completely ruined any semblance of relationship she had with her kids. As Cecil tells us in 182 (It Sticks With You), "Our mother wouldn’t speak to us. She would just walk and walk, much faster than we could. I think she wanted to lose us in the shadowy labyrinth of tall trees. [...] we always found our mom. She was at the same old tree, leaving flowers at the base of its giant trunk. And we would hike home. I don’t remember who the flowers were for. Maybe she never said."
That's as plain as it gets. She abandoned them, consumed in her grief and her anger. And, as we learn in Ghost Stories, she never recovered.
There's also the oracle element, however. And the Mirrors. That's weird, right? The prophecy that Cecil would die, and it would involve a mirror? Is this real? Is this an element of her mental deterioration? I can't say for certain. I hope it's not, I don't want cecil to die by murder.
And the trees. God, the trees. The trees are fucking everywhere and this isn't necessarily an unanswered question, more of a thematic element I want to draw more attention to.
Cause we have all the drawings of trees in 245, and we have 182.
But then there's episode 132, "Bedtime Story."
And this is a DOOZY. This is a story Cecil's mother used to tell him (Not Abby?) meaning that:
there were times she did managed to be somewhat motherly, although perhaps this was influenced by her weird oracular relationship with him
she told him. A bedtime story. About a little boy who felt neglected by his family, so he went out and dug into the mud and turned into A TREE.
I just want you to really take that in. This little boy felt neglected by his family, so he turned into a tree and eventually grew to abandon his humanity to the point where he could no longer recognize or comprehend the passing of his own family.
"And then my mother would pat my head and say: "Good night, Cecil. Good night." Or so I imagined. By then, I was long asleep." Cecil's mom... probably didn't do that. But he imagined she did.
I've lost the spoons to write out a shitton of analysis but I haven't seen anyone bring up Bedtime Story in reference to ep 246 and I think they really should
Also something something "What would be worse than death? Living long enough to stop being a human" "Oh Cecil is... way older than he knows isn't he...."

The Beach sometime in the few days of arriving at school [ @emmathcmpson ]
The weather was still quite hot the first few months of school, which was fine with Ollie. He quite liked hanging out with his friends on the beach as indicated by him chanting, "beach! Beach! Beach! Beach!" as him and Emma made their way along the pathway that lead down to the sandy shores of the lake situated near campus. "It's been hot as fuck all summer, I needed this, I swear to god," Ollie said as he tossed his bag down onto the sand and laid his beach towel out neatly. "I think this weather is supposed to stay like this like into October. Climate change is truly a monster." He tsked, shaking his head as if disappointed in the world around them. Granted… He was. "Do you think if even more terrible things happen this year the Dean will take us on a trip to a tropical island instead of a snowy mountain for Winter Break." He joked, while also not really joking.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas follows Starr, a Black high schooler, who feels torn between the underprivileged minority community she grew up in and the affluent white community where she attends school. Already struggling with identity, Starr’s life erupts into chaos when Khalil, her childhood best friend, is murdered by a white police officer in front of her. This was another five out of five for me. I started this book at work one morning – I’m a substitute teacher – and finished it by lunchtime. It was impossible to put down. Thomas does a wonderful job at establishing tension, stakes, emotional connections, and voice. As someone who is less comfortable with writing first person, I admire how deep we got into Starr’s head. I will definitely be taking notes to apply to my work. While this novel explores many important themes, the two that stood out the most were how deeply police brutality is intertwined with systematic racism and Starr’s conflict of feeling like she must perform to meet other’s expectations all the time.
Despite how heavy this topic is, Thomas leverages multiple points of tension to keep readers hooked on the story. Furthermore, all these conflicts appear at varying distances to Starr, exchanging places at different points in the story. In some moments, the fights between the gangs take center stage. During other moments, the focus is on Starr’s interpersonal conflicts between her friends and family, and sometimes it’s just Starr’s struggle to find her voice in all of this. In a novel with so many threads, it’s important to shift what plots are in the forefront, so that readers do not get bored. This choice also prevents readers from feeling too overwhelmed by the sheer amount of conflicts present. I would love to know how Thomas braided these issues together because I really admire how this novel is crafted.
Another thing that Thomas succeeds at is portraying how infected the United States is with systematic racism, and how sinister, yet casually it appears. In the TV interview, the officer's father lies about the circumstances of the shooting without blinking. He claims that Starr and Khalil were cursing at the officer who pulled them over (Thomas 246). He says that his son “got scared, ‘cause they could’ve taken him down if they teamed up” (Thomas 246). Of course, none of this is true. But instead of questioning these statements, or pondering about the other side of the story, Hailey, Starr’s white friend, believes the officer’s father immediately (Thomas 248). When Starr confronts her on this, she gets defensive rather than listen and considers what Starr is saying (Thomas 250). This reveals how deeply ingrained and brainwashed so many people are in this country when it comes to police brutality against Black Americans. After Starr gives her statement to the Grand Jury, Hailey still refuses to entertain the thought that Khalil was innocent, saying Starr should move on because “‘Somebody was gonna kill him eventually’” (Thomas 341). Although this book came out almost seven years ago, nothing has really changed. Every time a Black person is killed, we go through the same song and dance: finding any way to justify why they “deserved” to be killed, performative activism from companies that never do anything to address their harmful policies, and a media circus never truly challenges these issues.
However, Starr’s journey of finding her voice acts as a message of hope. At first, she is terrified of speaking out about what happened: “I always said that if I saw it happen to somebody, I would have the loudest voice, making sure the world knew what went down. Now I am that person, and I’m too afraid to speak” (Thomas 34-35). However, after his funeral one of Starr’s friends from Garden Heights, Kenya, challenges Starr on her silence (Thomas 197-198). She says that Khalil would’ve said something if it had been Starr who got murdered, and continues “‘Here you are, with a chance to help change what happens in our whole neighborhood, and you are staying quiet. Like a coward’” (Thomas 198). This combined with the philosophy of the Black Panthers, which Starr’s father is a firm advocate of, inspires Starr to speak up against the lies of the police. At the end of the book, when the Grand Jury rules not to indict the officer, Starr protests against the injustice and uses her voice to emphasize that Khalil isn’t just some statistic, that his life had inherent value just in his existence as a person (Thomas 412). The novel ends with a tribute to those who have lost their lives to police brutality, and instead of leaning into how hopeless it feels, Starr asserts “I’ll never forget. I’ll never give up. I’ll never be quiet. I promise” (Thomas 444). As long as we never stop fighting against racial injustice and a system that continues to oppress non-whites, they can’t win.

20 questions for fanfic writers tagged by @kittyphoenix12-xx. Thanks for the tag!!!
How many works do you have on AO3?
22 across four pseudonyms!
What's your total AO3 word count?
251,426 as of November 3rd, 2023
What fandoms do you write for?
Across my fandoms, there are fics for BotW, A:tLA, BBC Merlin and now the MCU. I'm currently only writing MCU fic tho!
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
A Spider on the Web (1,077 kudos, MCU, Parkner)
The Scientific Method (246 kudos, MCU, Parkner)
Spidery Thoughts (136 kudos, MCU, Parkner)
How To Train Your Dragon Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (120 kudos, MCU)
Druids and Destinies (117 kudos, BBC Merlin)
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! Because comments make me happy and I wanna engage with my readers (which is also why I have a Discord server for my fics)
If I don't respond, it's probably because it's a longer thread in which I've replied before and I simply don't know what to say.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don't do angsty endings. Or, well, I do at the end of a work but usually those have sequels with happier endings. The worst I'm gonna do is bittersweet. But if we allow angsty endings with sequels that have happy endings, The Way of the Sword (A:tLA) will fit best!
What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All of them tbh!!! Or so many of them. I will say Coffee and Chamomile (MCU, Parkner) though because the overall vibe is also very fluffy.
Do you get hate on fics?
I haven't yet!
Do you write smut?
I do! Mostly as an exploration of my own sexuality since I did struggle to accept my cupiosexuality for years. There's It Turns Out Asexuals CAN Want Sex (MCU, Parkner), and the rewrite of The Scientific Method will get a smut one-shot. I might also write some for Glowing in the Dark (MCU, Parkner) tbh.
Do you write crossovers?
I had ideas but nope! Idk, it's difficult for me to write for me in more than one fandom at a time, and this just ties into it.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Do my own abandoned translations count? If so, then yes.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I tried but I feel like co-writing is kinda difficult for me because of the increased pressure. A one-shot or short story is probably fine but anything more than that is just. Idk. My brain does Not Like It.
What's your all-time favorite ship to write for?
Tbh that changes depending on the fandom im in currently! It's Harley Keener/Peter Parker aka Parkner (MCU).
What's A WIP that you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
All of the ones in the fandoms I fell out of tbh.
What are your writing strengths?
I think writing emotions!!! I'm just projecting my own experiences and trauma and I think that gives them a lot of depth and makes them pretty realistic!
What are your writing weaknesses?
I can't keep anything short. I just ramble on and on and on and on and on and—
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I italicize and use a tooltip workskin so that if you hover over it you can see the translation! (or click on it, if you're using mobile)
For sign language, I haven't figured that one out. I probably won't use ASL grammar bc I simply do not know ASL (tho I do aspire to learn sign language from the country I live) and also bc I heard that can make it harder to read. I might put in italics, might not, idk. I'll see when I'll have to use it!
First fandom you wrote for?
Prinzessin Lillifee (a German book series/magazine about a fairy, often featuring her unicorn and animal friends. I used to spend so much money on the magazines and I'm pretty sure I had an audiobook! Prinzessin Lillifee fanfic was actually what got me into writing, and ironically I wrote one-shots for it.
Favorite fic you've written?
That is so difficult to answer. Probably A Spider on the Web and It Turns Out Asexuals CAN Want Sex. And Glowing in the Dark (MCU, Parkner).
I'm tagging @the-writing-merlin, @chaosisorderao3, @pbpsbff, @graham-cracker-guillotine, and whoever else wants!
List of questions under the cut for ease of copy-pasting.

pinpricks
Written for @flashfictionfridayofficial Prompt 246: pinprick
[Summary: a pinprick can mean more than a moment's pain] [cw: mentions pricking of a finger, mild blood]
Tumblr media
The blood wells up on the tip of her finger; she hisses and frowns disapprovingly.
Across the cramped room, Ady looks up at the sound, a similar disapproving sound rapidly creasing their porcelain skin.
“Watch that blood,” they say, a tongue-tip sharp like the needle’s tip. “That gets on the threads and it’ll-”
“I know what it’ll do.” Sharp like the tongue, like the needle, like her voice often ends. Bruque and inappropriate, so of course Ady’s creased brow gets deeper, a river’s gorge. It’s a chasten on its own, and she flicks her eyes down in humble shame.
“Just watch the blood.” Ady’s needle returns to their threads, passing a new loop as effortless as the sun’s rise. She considers the blood droplet for a second, a crimson bead that wouldn’t be amiss among the tapestry. This wouldn’t hold its shape around the thread though, and would work its way through fibre and thread, an irreversible stain. She sucks it away on the mountain of her bottom lip, a swipe of copper burn momentary against her inside cheek.
She feels Ady’s eyes, another swipe, this against her outside cheek.
Her fingertip throbs gently, and she watches herself as she passes her needle back through the fabrics. The shiny sharp tip parts what it must, secures what must be, and so easily had it punctured her skin. Stitch after stitch; then another pinprick.
A gasp, this time, in place of the hiss. She jerks her hand back, the other restraining the needle back, watching now with astonishment as a second bead reaches up the apex of her finger. Ady’s eyes lash like storm rain against window panes. It is an angry hiss that erupts from between Addy’s teeth, enough to scratch through skin itself.
“Watch it! You must be careful, understand?”
“I am,” she bites a response, wiping the droplet away to where the other disappeared. “The needle seems to have a mind of its own.”
“Do not blame the equipment.” A frown now part scowl; she has agitated Ady now, and this mistake will not be soon forgotten. If it is a storm on windows that Ady’s eyes are, then it is the sea that churns in the wind in her stomach. A whirlpool, strong enough to drag a thousand ships to its doom. She feels unsettled.
“Take more care,” Ady adds on. “A stain upon those threads-”
“I understand what it’ll do.” The second time in so many handfuls. The sea inside her stomach is wine-dark, tinted with rage. Two pinpricks, two almost mistakes. It is rage at herself, frustration at being shown up in front of Ady’s watchfulness.
She takes to the work again, more cautious, like a shepherd watching over his recently hunted sheep. Every pass is slowed slightly, her eyes narrowed and focused upon that sharp tip that hungers to nick her finger. The work begins to build, bright flashes of colour woven through thread, a fabric in the making. Gold that can catch the sun, silver to shine the moon, and the wonderfully bright blues and sumptuous reds and earthy greens all working in such partnership. Across the room, she feels Ady’s watchfulness retract, the work bring them into concentration. Under her hands, she feels the fabric grow, the throbbing of her index finger fade – until the needle jerks, and a third pinprick explodes across her tip.
She lets out a swear for this third time, abandoning the needle as she throws herself back from the work, looking incredulous at the crimson threat upon her skin. Her eyes raise and reach Ady’s, already up and this time a cautious mirror of hers. Once is lack of care. Twice, a need for attention. Thrice, that’s a pattern.
“I don’t think I should work on this piece,” she says after a moment. Her fingertip lets out a gentle twinge. Ady’s brows furrow, a thicker thread tangles.
“I don’t believe you should, no,” they say after a second moment. “Lest you stain the work.”
She pushes herself further back, wiping the blood away for the third time. Her eyes flitter across the work, threads hanging half finished, and the sharp silver point hanging among them. It catches the light, swaying slightly in the momentum left, a wicked thing. Ady’s chair scrapes; they step over carefully and gingerly lift the thing, untangling it from the work. Caught in their palm, safe, and then there is a catch of breath from Ady’s throat.
They uncurl their hand and show her: a pinprick of their own, in the meat of their palm.
The eyes that look up to meet hers are dark and foreboding, the shadow of the largest mountain across a forested land.
“I think we need to bring this higher,” Ady says. “Something strange is going on.”
The pinprick mark gives a throb. She nods.
“Something strange indeed.”

ao3 meme
Nobody tagged me on this and I’m not planning to tag anyone else (I hate it when people do that to me, so just consider yourself tagged if you want to). But here we go:
Rules: Give us the links to your wonderful words with the most hits, most kudos, most comments, most bookmarks, most words, and least words.
Most hits: To Beard the Lion, also known as my most fucked up Dragon Age fic! It’s got everything: internalized bigotry, unhealthy coping mechanisms, alcoholism, poorly-negotiated kink, and sexy suicidal ideation!
TBTL is also #1 for kudos and bookmarks! As an authorial aside, the public bookmarks are hilarious on this one. Some personal favorites:
“read this while you’re high af”
“jesus”
“wtf”
Most comment threads*:  First Flower, which is a real surprise! It’s my newest completed longfic, in my newest fandom, where I don’t have a preexisting follower base. I think coming from DMC fandom, which overlaps neatly with Trigun in a lot of ways (fucked up incesty nonhuman twins, mainly), probably helped. Trigun fandom is also huge compared to most of my fandoms. And if this fic has gotten the most threads (i.e. individual people starting new conversations, as opposed to joining ongoing conversations), I’m guessing that indicates a new audience finding my work? Anyway, come for the redemption arcs, stay for the freaky floral genitalia!
*The meme says “most comments,” but I’m not sure how to get a stat ranking of comments; the stats tools only seem to offer ranking by comment threads. If anybody knows how to get a ranking by comments, please lmk.
Most words: Resonance Effect, sob. My unfinished Mass Effect/Dragon Age soulmates crossover AU. I want to finish it! I want to know what happens, too! Maybe one day my muse will return to this one. Not done at 79,301 words.
Least words: In the Garden, at 246 words -- a collaboration I did with an amazing artist who was putting out a lovely DMC AU art book at the time; more at the link. But this isn’t the real “least words fic” for me, because I’ve also written a bunch of 100-word Drabbles for various fandoms (except Trigun so far). The Drabbles are all bunched into a single fic listing, though, to avoid glopping up the results pages. I might reorganize them into a fic collection, if that might work better.

Just went through all my drafts in preparation of return from the unexpected hiatus. I dropped from 300 drafts to 246. It isn't significant but that's over 50 threads I don't have to do so hey, I'll give it that. If our thread is one of the ones I dropped, I apologize immensely. It was nothing against you personally at all. Some things just don't vibe for me, and pushing myself to try to write things is creating burn out. I'm learning to teach myself that I don't need to give an explanation for dropping things if I'm overwhelmed. I used to beat myself up for doing this, so I call this some good growth as a roleplayer.

AO3 Statistics Game
Tagged by @mr-iskender your relentless pursuits in tagging me in games just because you know i like to be included might occasionally give you fruit (it will be clear why this one was so easy though hahaha)
Rules: Give us the links to your wonderful words with the Most hits, Most kudos, Most comments, Most bookmarks, Most words, and Least words.
Most Hits, Most Kudos, Most Comments, Most Bookmarks, Most Words:
you're too shy to say it : Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu
A whopping 22,628 hits; 1920 kudos, 255 comment threads; 669 bookmarks; 27, 246 words
Other than the words, the stats are almost double of any other fics I have ever written. I am quite literally a one hit wonder. The popularity of this one was a huge surprise and I'm super grateful but honestly I wouldn't consider this anywhere near a personal favorite. There was a time this fic's popularity frustrated me a lot but I think I've matured since then and learned that it's amazing that anything I created connected with people like this.
Least Words:
The Timed Wallow: Lionel Messi/Sergio Kun Aguero
269 words and as far as I know one of Alex's most favorite piece of what I've written so I'm glad I got to showcase it. It's a silly little thing but I am fond of it.

616!Eddie Brock should not be allowed on Twitter because he'd see something like "would love to see more mlm romance in media 😔" and he would immediately launch into a 12-tweet-long thread about how we should NOT be romanticizing multilevel marketing schemes and how they are a way for the rich to get richer and how instead we should boost stories about small business owners and on and on
until approximately one hour later he quote-tweets himself saying "I have been informed that 'MLM' is a more versatile acronym than I originally thought. My apologies for the misunderstanding and let me also clarify my unwavering support for the queer community of this city.
"However, if you would like more information on multilevel marketing and pyramid schemes and how to avoid them, please see the sources below: (links)"

still thinking about the fact that one of my mutuals didn't even technically tag me in a thing about Spider-Man 3, she just did a casual little "@ kita" without making it a real "@" and somehow I still managed to come across it in my massive dashboard. the universe is conspiring against me. she knew that somehow I'd see it. she manipulated the energies of reality and so now here we are and against all good reason I want to rewatch SM3 and by that I mean suffer.

I think my favorite kind of comics-based fanfics are the ones where you can tell the writer went into it with at least 200 issues of whatever they're writing behind them because they have a lot of good characterization and reference to multiple events in canon and tons of knowledge
but they have very obviously cherry picked what they did and didn't like to create the story THEY want to see the whole time I'm reading with tears streaming down my face yelling "yes.... YES!!!" because they're so galaxy brained for that

Mr. Collins was not a sensible man, and the deficiency of nature had been but little assisted by education or society... Having now a good house and a very sufficient income...
I really dislike adaptations have made Mr. Collins older than his actual twenty-five years. It seems like they want to lean into the Gross Older Relation I Must Marry trope but that is NOT what is happening here and I think it’s more significant to recognize the truth.
As far as Elizabeth knows, there is nothing wrong with Collins. He doesn’t gamble (or he wouldn’t go on about it at the party), we don’t see him get drunk (Uncle Phillips is hinted to do that), he doesn’t seem violent/prone to outbursts of temper (he could have when Lydia was rude while reading), and he’s not ugly as far as we know. His manners are very formal, which isn’t really shown in adaptations either. And he’s young, he’s only four years older than Elizabeth.
The point is not that he’s a GORIMM. I think the point is that he’s fine, but Elizabeth knows she’ll never like him and that’s enough. Mr. Collins offers a good deal: domestic security, future wealth, and no danger. However, Elizabeth understands that without intellectual compatibility, she will be unhappy. This is what makes her a heroine.
By making Collins old and kind of gross, the adaptations actually erase a lot of Elizabeth’s motivations and strength. The reaction to Collins becomes more visceral than intellectual, and that’s a problem.

The Wickham Fund
According to Darcy, he paid Wickham 3000 pounds instead of his inheritance.
According to Mrs. Gardiner, Darcy paid approximately 3000 pounds to secure the wedding of Wickham and Lydia.
Obvious Conclusion: Mr. Darcy has a 3k Emergency Fund that he keeps having to use for Wickham.

Jane Austen’s Warning:
A lot of people tell me the Mrs. Smith/Mr. Elliot plot is a lose thread or Jane Austen would have went back and fixed it, but when you read all of her books it's a very clear repeat of an important theme: men are often not what they appear.
Northanger Abbey: Don’t just trust your brother when he tells you his friend is a good guy, judge for yourself. It was John Thorpe, your brother was dead wrong. Also, your creepy feelings about General Tilney were right, just more mundane.
S&S: The passionate, open, charming fellow who is obsessed with your sister? Turns out he’s a debt-ridden, teenage-seducer. It was good to doubt him, Elinor, he wasn’t being completely straight with you. The good ones have honour.
P&P: Superficially charming man is super bad news, man with snobby manners has a heart of gold underneath. Elizabeth is intelligent, the novel shows us that anyone can be drawn in. Elizabeth was unwilling to change her first impressions and take in new information.
Mansfield Park: Some men pretend to be in love for fun, Fanny’s clear-sighted judgement of Henry Crawford keeps her safe from his attack on her heart. We are shown that these men can seduce friends and guardians against you. Fanny refuses to “fix” Henry or accept him on his word, he needs to show her that he has changed before she will.
Emma: The superficially charming man was already engaged and was tricking you! The other charming, attractive man was actually a petty jerk! The plain-spoken, honest man was always the better choice.
Persuasion: Anne has a gut feeling that she can’t fully put words to about Mr. Elliot that he is bad news. She cannot even fully justify it to herself. ANNE, YOU WERE RIGHT.
Again and again, we are told that women need to trust their judgement, look for more evidence into a man’s character/past, and mistrust charm/looks without a basis of goodness. Anne figuring out that Mr. Elliot is evil isn’t anti-climactic, it’s a proof that her judgement is sound. It’s a reminder that one should never rush into a marriage without knowing more about a man’s past. Because for a woman especially, it can end horribly.

Jane Austen associating the word "rational" with women over six books:
Do not consider me now as an elegant female, intending to plague you, but as a rational creature, speaking the truth from her heart. - Elizabeth Bennet, Pride & Prejudice
“But I hate to hear you talking so like a fine gentleman, and as if women were all fine ladies, instead of rational creatures. We none of us expect to be in smooth water all our days.” - Mrs. Croft, Persuasion
She dearly loved her father, but he was no companion for her. He could not meet her in conversation, rational or playful. - Emma Woodhouse, Emma
“Oh! never, never, never! he never will succeed with me.” And she spoke with a warmth which quite astonished Edmund, and which she blushed at the recollection of herself, when she saw his look, and heard him reply, “Never! Fanny!—so very determined and positive! This is not like yourself, your rational self.” Fanny Price, Mansfield Park (we know that this is very much her rational self, also after a marriage proposal)
Elinor agreed to it all, for she did not think he deserved the compliment of rational opposition. -Elinor Dashwood, Sense & Sensibility
You talked of expected horrors in London—and instead of instantly conceiving, as any rational creature would have done, that such words could relate only to a circulating library, - Henry Tilney, teasing his sister, Northanger Abbey
