BOTD: California Thrasher
Photo: Wendy Miller
"Several kinds of dull gray-brown thrashers occur in the West, but this is the only one along the California coast. The bird's normal range is limited to California and a corner of Baja, but within that range it is quite common in the chaparral, even coming into brushy suburbs. It spends most of its time on the ground, walking and running with its tail often held high, stopping to dig in the dirt with its sickle-shaped bill."

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
How many songs do you know by heart? Whatever the number, it probably isn't as many as the brown thasher! This little bird has at least 1,100 songs in its repotoire, with some studies indicating the number might be well over 3,000. Many of these calls are mimics of other species, which males use to impress and woo females of their own kind.

When people talk about going into the woods and hearing human-like voices spooky style I'm convinced it's just birds. Lots of birds are good as hell at mimicry.

"A drab-colored and inconspicuous species typically found from the middle level to the canopy in woodlands, where it mostly feeds on fruits. Song is a deliberate series of high-pitched squeaks and lower-pitched whistles. Most common call is a high, thin whistle."

"…TO WITNESS SUCH A VIOLENT SHOW,
OF POWER OVERTHROWN."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlright on American thrash metal band SLAYER, perfecting the sound that VENOM laid down years prior, during their "Hell Awaits" Tour at the VERA [club] in Groningen, Holland, on June 1, 1985.
"We were on Metal Blade Records at that time; we had not signed with Rick Rubin and "Reign In Blood" wasn’t anything on the horizon, so the band was at its primitive, but very advanced, stage. We were gaining a lot of fans and there was a lot of underground talk about us. We were drawing pretty well."
