Almost Paradise ( Owen Patrick Joyner Fic )

Hey everyone! This story is gonna be a Owen Patrick Joyner story and I will be pairing the reader with Owen, so I’ll put Y/N anytime the main character is mentioned or is talking. This is my first story since high school so please bear with me as the writing will slowly become better the more I write. I hope all you fellow Owen simps like myself like this story. Summary: Y/N just turned 22 and decided to make a spontaneous trip to L.A California USA from Dieppe,New Brunswick, Canada to visit her best friend Charlie Gillespie for her 22nd birthday present to herself. He doesn’t know she’s coming, hence the surprise. But little does she know would she get a little surprise of her own on her way to America.

Chapter 1: Someday

*Week before Reader’s birthday* 2021

Y/N’s thoughts: It has been forever since I’ve last seen my best friend Charles Jeffrey Gillespie or how I like to call him Arlo *as I hold onto the necklace he gave me for my 15th birthday*. Weird nickname I know, but I’ve been calling him that since kindergarten and I’m not changing it. It’s almost my 22nd birthday so I felt like I should treat myself to a present of seeing my best friend for a little while. Momma bear doesn’t know yet but I don’t think she’ll care as much since she loves Charlie as one of her own kids, so just taking a trip cross country shouldn’t be too hard to tell her. Right? Let’s find out.

*Y/N walks down to the kitchen from her bedroom*

“Hey mami,” Y/N says as she sits on one of the barstools, popping a green grape and dipping it into nutella into her mouth.

“Yes Y/N nickname?” Y/N’s mom says in a what do you want tone, while finishing cleaning up the kitchen after dinner.

“What?” Y/N asks.

“I already know you want something. You never come back downstairs after dinner unless you’re getting a snack or you want something. I’m your mother, remember.”

“Damn, that predictable huh? Anyways, yes I wanted to ask you something or more like tell you something. So I was thinking for my 22nd birthday I could possibly fly down to America and see your adopted son for a couple weeks. You know I’ve been wanting to move down to L.A so why not go for my birthday. I’d obviously stay at Arlo’s, money shouldn’t be an issue since I’ve been saving plus birthday money from past years. Sooo?” Y/N finishes saying while looking at her mom with puppy eyes.

“You already bought your plane ticket didn’t you?” your mom says while staring at you with one eyebrow raised.

“.... maybe…. no actually, I wanted to see what you’d say first before splurging.” Y/N says while looking down at the bowl of grapes and looks up again to smile cheeky at her mom.

Your mom rolls her eyes and laughs. “ Sure, why not. Do you want me to call Maman J so she can tell Charlie?” your mom asks.

“No no, I want it to be a surprise. It’s kind of a birthday present to myself since Arlo decided to be like “ I wanna be an actor and blah blah blah”. You say mimicking him.

“Alright, well as an early birthday present, I’ll buy your ticket. Should I make it a round trip or a one way?”

“Ummm make it a one way trip, I’ll let you know when I want to come home. You know Arlo, he always has some random hiking trip he wants to take, and knowing him he might drag me to one of those trips” you say rolling your eyes.

“No problem. You better go upstairs and start packing.” your mom says.

*You dip one last green grape into nutella and pop it into your mouth before you hop off the bar stool to give your mom a kiss* “You’re the best mami!”

*You run back to your room and start planning the whole trip*

*5:30pm One day before reader’s birthday and your flight*

*you're sitting on your bed finishing up some last minute packing, when you hear a knock at your door.*

“Come in.” Y/N says without turning around.

“Hey hun.” your mom says.

*you turn around to face your mom* “Hey mami, whats up?” *you say while sitting on top of your luggage trying to close it*

Your mom chuckles, “Here is your plane ticket for your flight, it's at 5:55am, you have a connecting flight to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma which will have a connecting flight to L.A.X.”, your mom says handing you the tickets. “So you better finish packing and get some rest.”

*You reach for the tickets while trying not to fall of your luggage* “Awesome, thanks mami.”

“No problem, just get some rest ok. I will drive you to the airport.” your mom says while walking out of your room.

“Ok!” you yell through the door. *You finally got the luggage to close* “YES!” you say standing up on the edge of your bed but then proceed to fall off your bed in the process which leads to a loud thud hitting the floor. “I’M OK!” you yell before your mom asks.

You place your luggages and carry ons by your door and start getting ready for bed. You look into the mirror one last time and stare at the picture of you and Charlie at the waterfront, ( https://www.instagram.com/p/B-suC_WF8Cu/) ( just pretend its yall, I know its like his cousin or friend)

“L.A.X I’ll see you tomorrow.” you say to yourself before walking to bed.

*Reader’s birthday* 3:00am

*your phone goes off at 3:00 am with the song I See Fire by Ed Sheeran playing from your phone softly.*

*You groan annoyingly wondering why you’re up so early, when you realize it is your 22nd birthday and you have a flight to catch in two hours. You spring out of bed, pop your airpods in and blair The OtherSide from The Greatest Showman and begin getting ready for your long day of flying*

*Dancing towards your bathroom, you turn on your shower to warm up and start brushing your teeth. You lay out the outfit you will be wearing to the airport on your bed, take out your headphones and head into the shower.*

*20 mins later. You hear a knock on your bathroom door*

“Almost done sweetie?” your mom asks.

“Yes, I’m just finishing up, I’ll be down soon.” you say through the door.

*Because you’re going to the airport you didn’t put too much makeup on, just enough to make yourself look kind of awake on the flights. You put your hair in a messy bun, put on your jean jacket, take one last look in the mirror before you shut off the light and head out.*

*You look around your room to make sure you grab any last minute items for your carry on. Especially making sure you have your Beats, charger, spare hair elastics and gum. You go to grab your luggage when you realize your mom already did and placed them in the car. Best mom ever. You grab your guitar case and your bag and head out.*

*Skip the car ride, you’re already at the airport*

“You’re sure you have everything right?” your mom asks while taking the stuff out of the car.

“Yes, I promise, I have everything I need. If I forgot anything important I will call you and have it shipped to Arlo’s.” you say while closing the trunk of the car.

“Alright, have a safe trip hun, please be safe and try not to get Charlie in too much trouble ok?” your mom says while hugging you goodbye.

*GASP* “ HEY! I’m a good noodle, Arlo’s the one who dared me to jump in the fountain at the mall. You know me I could never pass up a good dare.” you say while breaking the hug.

“Haha, yes I know which leads you to getting sick. Remember, it was winter.” your mom retorts back.

“ Yeah yeah I know, I’m still a good noodle though.” You chuckle while grabbing your stuff again.

Your mom shakes her head, “Go before you miss your flight silly.” She says while turning you around.

“Ok, ok I get it you want me gone.” You say laughing while walking towards the automatic doors.

“OH SWEETIE!” your mom calls out.

You turn around. “Yes?” you ask

“Happy Birthday!” your mom yells in front of everybody.

You stare at her like really. “Thanks mami. I love you too”

*You walk inside the airport and walk towards the check in line to check in all your luggages.*

*Skip to you’re already on the plane before take off.*

*You check your phone for the time, plug in your Beats, place them on and hit shuffle before. You look out the window watching the sun just barely starting to rise before you close it and begin to read your book, for the next 4 hours.*

*4 hours later*

*You finish up one of your books, you pull off your headphones just in time to hear the pilot announce that you guys are about to land. You place your book and headphones back into your bag and prepare to land.*

* You get off the plane and check the time on your phone to notice that your connecting flight is almost here and you begin to panic. You check your ticket and realize that of course your flight is on the other end of the terminal, so you begin to run and book it to the other end, hoping you’ll make it on time.*

“Excuse me! Sorry! Sorry! Excuse me!” you say as you weave through airport traffic.

*Half way through your running spree you look down at your phone again to make sure you didn’t miss your flight when you feel your arm get tugged from behind you. You notice one of yours and someone else’s luggage clipped each other by the wheels and they both go flying. “Sorry, my bad.” you say as you grab a luggage, not even looking up to see who you collided with and go back to your sprinting.*

“Yes!” you say to yourself as you make it to your gate. The flight hasn’t boarded yet so you take a seat and wait for your row to be called. You get to your gate, hand the lady your ticket and proceed to board your flight.

*You place your carry-on luggage into the overhead bin and take your seat, when you notice a very sweaty guy just barely making it onto the flight. You chuckle to yourself.*

*3 hours later*

“Alright passengers, we will be landing very shortly. The weather today is 89 degrees, partly cloudy, and 40% of humidity. Welcome to Los Angeles, California passengers.” the pilot announces over the intercom.

*You place your headphones back on, and calmly this time walk off the plane and head towards baggage claim*

*As you’re waiting your favorite song Someday by Max Schneider starts to play. You begin to sway back and forth, humming to the tune when you then feel a tap on your shoulder. You turn around to see who it was and begin to stare at him weirdly wondering why you can’t hear the guy talk*

“Oh shit, my bad. Forgot.” you say as you take off your headphones to actually hear what the guy was saying.

“It's cool, all I was saying was that I was sorry for colliding with you back in Oklahoma. I wasn’t paying attention, I was in a rush and didn’t see you. It wasn’t until after that I noticed that the gate was in the opposite direction.” A dirty blonde guy explains to me.

“Oh no, it was totally my fault, I should have been looking up instead of on my phone. I guess we were both in a rush. But hey, I like your jean jacket. Pretty dope.” I say to him.

“Right back atcha.” he retorts.

*Awkwardly stands next to each other waiting for your luggage to arrive*

“Welp, that's my luggage. Have fun in L.A.” The guy says as he grabs his other luggage and heads towards the exit.

“Thanks, you too crash buddy.” you say back.

*you grab your luggages from the conveyor belt and pull to the side so you’re not in the way of people. You go to open one of your luggages to make sure nothing spilled on the flights/crash over, when you notice that the things in one of the luggages isn’t yours.*

“Shit, I must have accidentally switched luggages with that guy back in Oklahoma.” you say to yourself as you look around to hopefully see if he is still around.

*You close up the luggage, and begin to gather your things and head towards the exit, hoping the guy hasn’t left the airport yet. You get to the exit, head outside and don’t see the guy you bumped into.*

“Damn it!” you say defeated, “How will I ever get my stuff back? What a way to start off my birthday.”

*You get an uber and head towards Arlo’s place*

Y’all gotta stop enabling me with my special interests- I WILL write you novels.

This is gonna be a whole thing, so sit your butt down and prepare to listen to me yell for ten years.

This question is literally different depending on what I’m wearing- but my clothes fall into three schools of fashion which I’ll refer to ‘Statement makers’ ‘Essentials’ and ‘Accents.’

THE STATEMENT MAKERS:

These are the pieces that make strangers want to start arguments that they can’t win on the streets with me XD I have 4 in total: Though each one is a work in process. “Where does get one of these fine pieces?” You may be asking yourself? “Surely there is a hot topic-esque store that must provide such items!” The long and short is no, there isn’t. You gotta make these yourself.

So how you do that?

Step one: Start with a base.I like to keep these relatively cheap bc A: I’m broke, and B: This way I can put a little more money into ‘accents’ (which I’ll explain more about later) First you need that base- a good garment that will hold up to your daily life and tolerate the abuse you’re about to put it through. What I do is go to my local thrift store, or good will (not salvation army. F*ck the salvation army) and get one second hand. The vest and the leather jacket above ran me a total of 20$ instead of the 100$ you’d waste if you bought it from Big Business (and also f*ck them too for killing the environment and the economy) Be heckin’ thrifty and crafty with it- you’re essentially purchasing your canvas so don’t be afraid to scrounge.

Step two: Gather your men.And by men, I mean the sh!t you’re gonna adhere to this beast. A good place for pins/patches? Etsy. Theres literally millions of options you can get from small businesses and independent artists all over the world and they’re usually pretty cheap: Ranging anywhere from 1$ (plus shipping) to 15$ for big back pieces. Literally every single patch that wasn’t gifted or I didn’t make was purchased via etsy. Which brings me to my second option for pins and patches: Make them. You can get a button maker if you’re feeling frisky- or just go to a f*ck ton of rallies and accommodate them from there. Patches can easily be made with a scrap of black fabric and some white fabric paint. At my local WalMart a yard of plain black cotton fabric will run you about 3$ and will get you 10-20 patches depending on the size. The paint will run you about 1.50$ and an afternoon of your time just grinding away at it.

And if you’re Extra Edgy™ like me- you’re gonna need some heckin SPIKES. Spikes are surprisingly easy to come by and add to your pieces- I get the little screw on ones: on Etsy it’ll run you about 10$ for 100 of them- or if you’re okay with it, use amazon and get 500 for 8$ (As much as I’m not a fan of big business, I can understand the need to go with the cheapest option.)

Step three: Just literally throw that sh!t together.This is the fun part: Making it your own. This way no one has the same sh!t as you and you can wear your pride on your sleeve, back, chest ect-Small words of wisdom: -Iron on patches are weak. They’re not going to stay on for long. Just surrender to the fact you’re going to have to sew that sh!t on now and save yourself the heartache. -If you get/make flimsy fabric patches, you’re gonna need interfacing. You can also buy this at walmart for around 4$ a yard and it’ll save you so much goddamn trouble. -There is no way in the freshest of hells you’re going to be able to sew on a patch to a leather jacket. Just scrap that notion now- it’s not going to happen. So what can you do? Aleene’s super fabric glue. Literally the jaws of life aren’t gonna be enough to rip that patch off your jacket if you use it. Idk who Aleene sold her soul to to get such sticky sh!t but I stan her for it forever. -Don’t be afraid to paint directly onto your items. It’s so much f*cking fun. Just do it.-If you’re gonna make this a whole hobby/lifestyle you might want to consider investing in a sewing machine. You’ll never know true agony until you spend days hand sewing on a back piece stitch-by-stitch only to realize it’s crooked when it’s done. At least if you use a machine it’ll be 5-10 minutes of work lost as apposed to literal hours.

THE ACCENTS:

This is where you’re gonna throw the money you saved by thrifting your statements. These are the splurges, that one shirt with the funny logo you have saved in your bookmark bars, that impulse buy at the mall. The pricier things that you’re just not gonna be able to make yourself and would rather ask for for your birthday/christmas/whenever you’d be receiving presents.

So, as for MY guilty pleasure spots:

WildBlackSheep on Etsy. What can I say? I love an independent bish. And their shirts are just so witty and funny, I love them to death and back. Not to mention the customer service is UNREAL. 10/10 would recommend to a friend.

WickedClothes.com. I’m just a dead ringer for combining that 80′s cartoon style with my morbid sense of humor. The ‘Let’s Have A Seance’ ringer tee is one of my favorite shirts.

JohnnyCupcakes. Literally theres like one design, but it’s a design I love. If the cupcake with crossbones doesn’t convey who I am as a person, idk what does.

BlackCraftCult.com. Now, I’m not a satanist- but I’m extremely supportive of the ideals that neosatanism has. (Which is essentially just believing in yourself and not being an assh*le) Plus, satanist or not, the designs are dope.

angryyoungandpoor.com. So, you want a particular piece of ‘punk’ fashion that can only be bought, but you don’t want to pay full price for it. This is your stop. It’s discount classic punk fair to find all your favorite brands at not full prices, plus more. The website can be like a goddamn maze but I’m sure every punk will find something they like there.

And theres so much more, but I’ll be here all day just getting down EVERYWHERE I buy clothes XD These are just my favorite brands, and the ones I frequent most to treat myself.

THE ESSENTIALS:

Now for last, but not least- literally the staples. The basics. The things every person who ever wears clothes ever needs. The foundation to lay all your accessories and statements upon to get a good cohesive look on you and have you feeling completely punkified. Find these literally anywhere that works best for you: Goodwill, Target, Walmart, whatever. It doesn’t matter as long as you have these staples to build upon your punky exterior.

The shopping list:

-Black pants. Everyone and their mother needs just one good pair of plain black pants. They just go well with literally anything and are a dope addition to an edgy exterior. If you’ve got the funds and the time, I’d highly recommend finding one pair that fits you well and buying two of them- Keep one as normal but then take a couple of serrated knives and sandpaper to the other and give yourself some distressed pants. (Afterall, why on Gaia’s green earth would I buy PRE RIPPED JEANS when I’m the proud purveyor of my own destruction?)

Jeans.Same as the first for better or worse: You need a nice pair of jeans. I’d recommend doing the same shtick with the black pants and getting one pair to keep and one pair to rip up.

Plain black t-shirt.Literally get your butt to a dollar tree and get yourself a plain black t-shirt or two. You have no idea how useful it is to pair with your clothes. Just do it.

Plain white t-shirt.See above.

Boots.Combat boots just make the outfit. You may want to invest in a nice long-wear pair since shoes can be kinda expensive and you want a lot of milage for your buck. I’m a big fan of classic Docs bc they last FOREVER and are just good shoes. And if you’re not big on animal made items good news: They come in Vegan now.

Converse.They’re just good shoes what can I say? It’s classic, it’s comfortable, it’s always been around and it’ll always be around. You can get them in all kinds of styles and colors- like why do I even need to explain to you why converse are a good idea? I bet 5$ you already own a pair! They’re also great running shoes in case you need to flee from cops if need be, in my experience.

And from there you can mix and match with jewelry (in the face or otherwise) and hair to get a whole look! Hope this helps my darling!! Best of luck with punking it up!!!

The Break Up Blog - Day Thirty Six

I woke up like this - crappy.

Haha, putting a morbid twist on Beyonce doesn’t work that well, huh? In all seriousness, my rising wasn’t that bad. I actually got close to 9 hours of sleep and only woke up twice to have a delightful coughing fit.

My throat still felt pretty hoarse even after drinking water when I woke up in the middle of the night. The joys of having gastritis: the stomach acid seeping through my ruined esophagus and into my throat sucks up all the moisture in my mouth.

And I thought having ‘dry mouth’ while I was still on antidepressants was hard to live with...

On the plus side, I didn’t have a single sneezing fit while I was at work. Maybe whatever illness I picked up two weeks ago is finally losing traction. I’m sneezing right now after coming home, but I will enjoy the small victories.

Work was fine, pretty chilled in parts. I let three of my classes have ‘juice parties’ since they finished their first assessment last week while my fourth class had theirs yesterday. I even bought each of my students candy and chocolate. It feels nice having enough money again to splurge on other people, especially my students. Almost all of my monthly pay cheques in the past 6 months had gone to X and her ridiculous whims; I felt so trapped for the longest time. I can’t believe I let someone I loved use and abuse me so much.

My students were pretty noisy and annoying all day and I finally snapped with my sixth graders when they would shut up after I repeatedly tried to get them to calm down and listen to me. So I dragged them outside into the hallway twice: once to do Jumping Jacks and then to hold their hands above their heads for a minute the second time for one minute. I made them re-start whenever they didn’t listen or follow my instructions to show them that I meant business.

And after that - blissful silence for 10 minutes before the bell rang while I let them watch ‘Shazam’.

It feels to get my way, even in these small situations. As dumb as it sounds, it makes me think that just maybe, I can take control of my life again after all the turmoil I’ve experienced in recent times.

I’ve been re-reading a lot of my old fanfictions that I wrote years ago, all the way up last year. I took a hiatus from creative writing after X got ‘sick’; my heart just wasn’t in it during that time. A part of me is itching to get back into it; I seem to do my best work when I’m broken-hearted and miserable. But I don’t have any tangible ideas, only a desperate urge to write about something and everything.

Anyway, I often re-read the comments that people have left on my stories to give me an ego boost and I came across a few from X. We first met online when she read some of my fanfics about random K-pop idols.

Yes, I know, I like Korean pop music and it’s kinda embarassing. In my defence, the music is catchy and the idols are hot af. What else would’ve inspired me to write?

But back to me and X.

She was what you might call a ‘fanfic groupie’ of mine minus the sex. She liked my stories and she commented on lots of them over the years. But I didn’t notice her at first since I was still licking my wounds over my break-up with KA, who I had met in similar fashion.

Yes, that’s right, I dated two of my fanfic groupies and both relationships fell apart. I’m beginning to see a pattern here.

Anyway, I read through some of X’s old comments and they almost made me smile. This is mainly because I felt like I was reading a different person’s comments and not that of my ex-girlfriend. Some of her comments were before we dated and some of them were after we started dating. But all of them are the same: sweet, adoring and kind. I don’t care so much about the ‘adoration’ part, but I do miss X’s kindness and her sincerity.

I miss everything I had before, especially the writing part. I always dreamed that I would one day became a world famous novelist like J.K. Rowling. Reading Harry Potter in my teens got me through some dark days and I always wanted my writing to do the same for other people. But that ‘million dollar idea’ that will land me a Hollywood movie deal as well is eluding me so far. Writing’s one of the few gifts that I have which makes me feel special and the spark is just gone these days.

I hope I can write again soon, it might lift me out of this depressing hole that I’ve dug for myself lately.

I started typing my blog entry while waiting for some bread that I ordered to arrive. Did you know that you can order some food items from online stores in China that will deliver to your home within an hour? I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but China is kind of fucking cool that way! I’m so addicted to online shopping. Maybe I could making shopping my new significant other instead of an actual person...

Alright, no more talking nonsense. I need to go to the gym and hate every bit of exercise I’m about to engage in. I haven’t binged Netflix in a while, maybe I’ll do that tonight. There are a couple of shows with new seasons I’d like to catch on. Plus, there’s a new Chinese drama that C recommended to me I’d like to check out.

I have plans with D tomorrow to celebrate her birthday in the evening. I hope the present I ordered for her gets delivered to my work tomorrow. Since I’m gonna meet her, I might not have time to exercise tomorrow evening. So I’ll put my gym clothes into my work bag and take it to school tomorrow. I’m only teaching two classes anyway, so I have time to slip away for 20-30 minutes to exercise and then do the rest of my work at my desk.

When I felt down last night about X, I texted K and told her about it. She told me to try and take it one day at a time. She’s right, I need to give myself time to heal. No one who’s ever had a broken heart in the history of broken hearts has ever recovered from that hot mess in record time.

I’ll only know I can breathe easily again after I’ve come up for air and swum back to shore.

I’ve thought of a few stages of post break-ups that I’ve summarised into the 5 D’s which I seem to have gone through so far:

Stage 1 - Disbelief

Stage 2 - Distraction

Stage 3 - Debauchery

Stage 4 - Depression

Stage 5 - Departure

I feel certain that I’ll amend the names of some of the stages or switch the stages around at a later time. But for right now, these seem to fit my situation well, especially stage 4.

I wonder when I’ll finally get to stage 5.

Grotesque and Amazing Ch. 2 (Trixya) - Juniper

Summary: Trixie learns that money can’t buy happiness, as she and Katya get tangled up in a complicated love web. Female! War and Peace AU.

A/N: If you know anything about W&P, it’s that there’s a lot of interaction with many characters. So, again, check the tags every time! I hope all of the switching between past and present makes sense.

A hiss made Trixie fall onto her bed in laughter.

“Shit, that’s hot,” Tatianna cursed, angrily blowing on the slice of pizza in her hand. “I will never accept extra cheese as a topping. Why can’t you be a normal vegetarian and ask for pineapple or spinach or something?”

Trixie stuck her tongue out at her best friend, who was sitting in her circle chair, frowning.

It was tradition for them to have these sleepovers. They loved to totally geek out with face masks, magazines, and movies. Their ritual had seen the fall of video stores and the rise of Netflix, and now it was easier to check out Cosmo’s snapchat story than to pick up a physical issue.

When she still lived outside of the city, Trixie woke up every morning before daylight to catch the bus. There was a girl who always sat alone with her backpack on the seat next to her. Her long, black hair was always pulled into a sleek ponytail, and no one bothered her.

In third grade, the rumors about Trixie’s mom escalated, after a small argument with one of the ladies in church. Two girls in front of her stood on their knees to look over the seat, and all their friends watched in amusement as she ridiculed Trixie.

“My mom says that your mother is a whore,” one taunted.

Ponytail Girl had apparently been listening, because she got up and quickly tore the bully down. Her words poured out fast and razor sharp. The group recoiled, tears in their eyes. She dropped her backpack on the floor and sat next to Trixie.

“Don’t worry, no one will bother you anymore,” she said matter-of-factly. “I’m Tatianna.”

They’d been best friends ever since.

When Trixie told her about her father, she could almost see Tati shrugging over the phone.

“I mean, that sucks, but he was a dick. Did I leave my curling iron at your place?”

It was the only time that Trixie had allowed herself to cry during the whole situation. Not from sadness, but because she was so thankful to have someone that didn’t cut corners around her.

Tatianna splayed across the hot pink bedspread, relentlessly clicking the button on the remote. She was flicking through the titles on Netflix, groaning as they moved to each new category.

“Why do I feel like we’ve seen literally everything on here?” She huffed. “I’m gonna gag if you make me watch The Princess Bride again.”

“It’s a classic.”

“Since you’re like a zillionaire now, Trix, why don’t we splurge on some Redbox? I’ll drive.”

Katya narrowly caught the teddy bear before it connected with her face.

“Sorry, sorry!”

She looked across the room at Ginger, who was standing with her hands on her hips.

“If you don’t pay attention to me, I’m going to stick you in the ugliest maid of honor dress of all time.”

Katya knew it was selfish to not be focusing on her best friend, but these afternoons spent planning the wedding seemed to drag on for ages.

She wasn’t bitter, there had been plenty of time for her to adjust to the idea that her brother and best friend were very much in love. They were going to get married, buy a home, have kids. She could barely even stand half the bachelors and bachelorettes of their social scene; the thought of spending the rest of her days with one of them seemed unfathomable. Ginger seemed to read her mind, because she sat down next to her, resting her head on Katya’s shoulder.

“Maybe there’s something wrong with me,” she sighed. “No offense, but I’d rather eat rotten fish than be your cousin’s date to the wedding, no matter how handsome he is. I just can’t see myself being happy with any of our snobby friends.”

“That’s because you’re in love with the one with the freckles,” Ginger spoke, pointing to Katya’s dresser mirror. There was a photo stuck in the edge from her birthday party. Two bright smiles.

“Trixie Mattel? She’s like my sister,” she protested, frowning. What would make her say that?

“I’m like your sister,” her best friend continued, sporting a haughty look. “All these years, you’ve always talked about her with that twinkle in your eye. I know it when I see it.”

Katya rolled her eyes. Of course, Ginger, who had only ever been with one man, was a love expert.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about. When do I get to taste cakes, again?”

Ginger relented and went back to her clipboard, while Katya kept a curious eye on the picture in the mirror.

“Hey, Trixie!”

“Oh, shit,” Tati whispered, hanging onto Trixie’s arm. “What the hell does Chachki want with you?”

They were standing in the snack food aisle of the grocery store, DVDs in her hands, chips in Trixie’s.

The girl who had called to her was sauntering over, her long hair swaying. Her heels clicked against the linoleum. She wore blunt bangs that ended right above her sharply arched eyebrows. Tatianna moved to the side to give them some privacy.

Despite being in the same classes since kindergarten, Violet Chacki had never spoken to Trixie. She was one of the most popular girls in school. Thin, pretty, and smart. She always wore the latest fashions and had the entire student body bowing at her feet. Violet was beautiful, and she knew it.

To say she was intimidating was to put it lightly.

“Um, hi, Violet. What are you doing here?”

She shook a paper bag in her hand. “I just came to pick up a prescription for my dad. You girls having a slumber party?”

It was then that Trixie realized that they were standing there in their pajamas. She felt her face heat up and crossed her arms over the cartoon cat on her chest. Violet smiled sweetly and pushed some dark hairs behind her ear.

“So, listen, I hope this isn’t out of line. I just wanted to offer my condolences about your father.”

“Oh, thank you, that’s very kind,” she said. Everyone knew her story, even Violet Chachki. Frankly, she was tired of discussing it. She wasn’t sure if she should feel guilty over that, but what possessed people to speak to her like some fragile doll? It would be better if no one said anything at all.

“Yes, well,” she started, reaching out to touch Trixie’s arm. Her pretty fingers were cold. “If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out. I know we aren’t exactly close, but who knows, maybe that could change! It’s our senior year, after all.”

Out of the corner of her eye, Trixie could make out Tati obviously eavesdropping, pretending to be deciding between two flavors of dip.

“That would be really cool, Violet. Thanks. I’ll see you at school?”

“Sure,” she said, leaning in to press a quick kiss to Trixie’s cheek. “Maybe I could even come to the next sleepover.”

As she walked away, Trixie batted her eyelashes at her fading silhouette, smiling widely.

“Give me a break, Trix.”

“What?” Trixie sighed. “She seems so nice. Maybe we’ve been misjudging her all this time. I think she just looks mean.”

“Ah, yes, a classic case of the Resting Bitch Face,” Tati said sarcastically. She rubbed at the lipstick print on her friend’s cheek. “She’s a notorious flirt. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was trying to snatch your inheritance money.”

“Don’t be petty. Maybe she really does like me.”

Tatianna rolled her eyes, but decided to let it go.

“And I really like toaster strudels. You can cool off in the frozen aisle, come on.”

If Trixie ever thought her life was hard, she could find solace in the fact that she wasn’t alone.

Tatianna’s parents had split up when she was just a kid, and her mother packed up everything to start a new life in France. For several years, she’d ask Tati to join her, but she never agreed, and finally she gave up. Trixie thought of her own mother, and couldn’t imagine their relationship being reduced to postcards and infrequent phone calls.

It wasn’t as if there was this great life that Tatianna was clinging to. The city was alright, sure, but France always seemed more glamorous to Trixie.

Her father was not aging well, and every few months that Trixie saw him, he seemed to be getting worse. He would drift off in the middle of sentences, fall asleep every time he sat down. His once charming nature became replaced with bitterness. His wife had left him, and his friends were all moving on or passing away. So, Tati endured the verbal abuse. She let his derogatory comments bounce off her, pretended not to see women sneaking out the front door in the early hours of the morning. Other than Trixie, all her friends became too scared to visit, lest they encounter the crass old man. She gave up hope of ever getting asked out on dates, the reputation preceding her.

Tatianna couldn’t leave him, though. If she did, he would have no one left, and she would never be able to forgive herself. Beneath her brave exterior, she was very protective of those she loved.

Which was why she grew increasingly annoyed every time Trixie bailed on her to hang out with Violet Chacki.

Despite Tatianna’s mixed feelings, it seemed that Violet did genuinely like Trixie. They had economics together, and on the first day Violet took the seat next to her without hesitation.

Trixie liked the way she took notes. Only writing with fine point pens, drawing colorful bubbles around pertinent information. She was a little highlighter happy, but it was endearing.

She liked the way she could tell the second that Violet came in the room. Half the class greeted her, and yet she still chose to sit with Trixie every day. With her pointed, painted nails, and vanilla perfume.

They were partners for the first major project of the semester, and they ended up not getting any work done the first three times they tried, getting too distracted by laughter, and falling asleep together in Trixie’s bed.

“You’re the funniest person I know, Trix.”

Violet won homecoming queen by a landslide, and as Trixie sat up in the bleachers with Tati, stuffing their faces with nachos, she could swear that Violet was smiling at her when they placed the crown on her head.

Truthfully, she had always been a bit of a hopeless romantic. It was hard not to be, being raised so close to her grandparents, who lived life like an old Hollywood movie. Like any place was paradise so long as they were together. No matter her mother’s situation, Trixie still believed in love.

Her faith was reaffirmed when Violet proudly introduced her as her girlfriend to her father. They were having dinner at her house, and he nodded kindly, shaking her hand. No one had ever actually asked to make it official, but she was too happy to care.

The house was large, and decorated fashionably. Violet was wealthy, though seemingly more modest about it than some people Trixie had met.

On the wall in the entryway, there was a framed portrait of Mr. Chacki, Violet, and another girl who looked to be a few years older. She was just as beautiful, with fire red hair.

“That’s my older sister,” she said. “She lives up north with her family. You’ll have to meet her sometime, I’m crazy about her. She’s my best friend.”

The months grew colder, and they only seemed to grow closer.

They were sipping on hot chocolate in Trixie’s living room, catching up on their favorite show. Wrapped up in large blanket, she rested her head against Violet’s shoulder, the sound of the TV just becoming nonsensical noise as she got lost in her thoughts.

She watched Violet, the way her chest rose and fell as she breathed. The way her lips seemed permanently fixed in a slight pout. Trixie’s heart picked up speed as she stared at them. It was still about an hour before her mom would be getting home, and she’d been debating doing this for weeks now.

They held hands as they strolled through the halls, left sweet kisses on noses and temples, but Trixie was ready to take the next step.

Though she couldn’t see underneath the fleece, she let her hand creep up to her girlfriend’s thigh, and leaned in, softly pressing her lips to the corner of Violet’s mouth.

She flinched and pulled away with a nervous laugh, leaving Trixie with a confused expression.

“Look, you’re gonna miss what Rafael is about to ask Jane-“

Trixie rolled her eyes and grabbed the remote, shutting off the TV. She sat up with crossed arms. She was both embarrassed and frustrated.

“What is it, Vi? Why don’t you ever wanna kiss me, or touch me, or anything? Don’t you like me?”

“I’m crazy about you,” she responded calmly. “There’s just no need to ruin a good thing by rushing. Sex isn’t everything.”

Of course, it wasn’t, but Trixie still couldn’t understand. She knew that Violet was not shy when it came to physical affection.

“I know that,” Trixie defended. “Taking it slow is okay, I don’t wanna pressure you into anything. But we’ve been together for months, and you kiss me like I’m your grandma or something.”

It was then that Trixie’s phone buzzed on the cushion in between them. It was Tati. They both stayed silent, watching it vibrate until the call went to voicemail.

Violet sighed and adjusted her bangs.

“I worry about that girl. You’re her only friend.”

“You’re her friend, too.”

“She doesn’t like me, Trixie. I’m not dumb.”

She fiddled with her shirt button at Violet’s words. It was true, there was no use denying it, but it still made her uncomfortable. Why couldn’t they get along for her sake?

“Look, I have an idea. Why don’t you take Tatianna as your date for that rehearsal dinner instead? You haven’t spent much time with her lately, and maybe she could even meet some new people.”

Trixie sighed. They’d been planning on going to the wedding together ever since she’d gotten the invitation in the mail several weeks prior. Ginger and Katya’s brother were finally tying the knot, and Katya had practically begged her to come. She couldn’t refuse.

She’d be surrounded by unfamiliar faces of a different class, and she supposed it wouldn’t hurt to have Tati there as her lifeline.

Violet checked her own phone, and frowned at something on the screen that Trixie couldn’t see.

“It’s getting late, I’d better go. Don’t be mad at me,” she sang sweetly. Trixie cursed herself; she knew she’d be won over by her charm again. “I’ll leave you with this.”

She breathed into Trixie’s mouth, kissing her tenderly. As soon as it begun, it was over, and Violet was steadying her heels into the carpet so that she could slip her feet inside.

Trixie sat there on the couch for thirty minutes more, wondering why it felt like nothing.

So last week the side gate to my house was left open and my dog got out. She bit one of my neighbors down the street, I'm guessing out of fear (she is a rescue dog). They do not pay for any vision, dental, or contraceptive. Certain (most) perscriptions are not covered.
