Shortfic: Zhongli x Childe x gn! Reader (Taking care of sick reader) Poly relationship
Listen, don’t sue me. I just have so much Zhongli x Childe x reader brainrot. I just think the dynamics would be so good. Zhongli being such a daddy good caretaker and Childe being... well Childe being Childe and you in the middle of it all, LIKE WHY THE HELL NOT? Yeah idk, I’m sorry, I indulged myself.
Categories: poly relationship, protective Childe and Zhongli, worry, possessive, fluff
Warnings: hinting at sexual activities (still very SFW though), poly relationship, not tagging anyone because I’m not sure if this is your thing. Let me know tho.
Characters: Zhongli x gn! Reader x Childe
"Zhongli…"
Childe stands in front of the man with a defeated look in his face, eyes turned towards the floor.
Zhongli was enjoying his tea, sitting at the table, liking the peace that it gave him. With a soft 'clink' he sets his teacup down and looks at Childe, calm gaze placed on the younger man.
"Childe, they will be fine,"
"I just don't understand what went wrong, was it too cold last night? Or were they overworking themselves?"
Zhongli sighs to himself, standing to close the gap between him and Childe. He cups a hand around the crook of Childe's neck, thumbing gently on his jaw.
"These things just happen sometimes, Childe. Perhaps it was something they ate, or even just a minimal change in their routine,"
"But they look like they're in so much pain,"
"I don't doubt it, their fever is at its peak at the moment. Not to worry, I've contacted Baizhu to take a look at them in the afternoon," Zhongli moves to remove his hand from Childe's neck, but the ginger haired male grasps on his wrist and stays it there. They stand in front of each other in silence, Childe swallowing the lump in his throat that had formed out of worry.
"Although we aren't bound by a contract…" Zhongli's voice tones down to a near whisper, Childe's eyes flicker up towards his. "...We're bound by an even stronger bond. Rest assured Childe, we are doing the best that we can," Zhongli moves his hand an inch downward towards his shoulder and squeezes it, and, in a slow and comforting motion, presses a kiss on Childe's forehead. "They will be fine," Zhongli repeats in a way that gives Childe the confidence and reassurance he needs.
The younger male takes in a big breath and sighs it out slowly. He nods and let's go of Zhongli's wrist, head turning the slightest to listen if you've woken up.
Nothing.
He kinda wished that you did, so that he could ask you how you were doing. If anything hurt. If you needed anything.
"Why don't you rest for a moment, I'll check on them in the next few hours," Zhongli motions over to the tea set on the table. There were 3 teacups filled up, one for him, one for Childe and one for you. "It wouldn't do if both of you got sick now, would it?"
Childe sighs and agrees, "Tell me if they wake up," and so for the rest of the day Zhongli stays by your bedside, changing the wet towel atop your forehead and merely watching the quickened rise and fall of your chest. Your face is flushed pink with the extra heat your body is producing, face clearly uncomfortable.
Suddenly Zhongli understands Childe’s anxiousness. You looked as if you were about to break. Childe was wildly protective of you, compared to Zhongli who always seemed to see things in a neutral manner. Looking at your current state though, he can't help but feel a stronger need to hide you away from the dangerous world.
Zhongli leans back in his seat, closing his eyes to rest momentarily. He had probably fallen asleep because in the next moment he hears his name on your lips. Even without opening his eyes, he knows that it’s you. He pushes himself up and comes to see that you’re sitting up as well, flush still on your face, sweat sticking to your forehead. “Y/N,” he’s a little startled, but motions for you to wait. If Childe finds out that he didn’t call him at the first moment, he’d be livid.
The moment he steps out of the room, his foot just an inch out, Childe is up and walking towards him. “Are they okay?” he asks, and Zhongli merely opens the door wider for him. Childe becomes a literal clingy koala at the sight of you. “Y/N!!!!” and leaps forward to give you a bear hug. There’s so many things coming out from his mouth that you weren’t even sure what he was saying anymore.
“Ahahaha…” You laugh nervously as he grips you in a tight hug. Zhongli just watches, the edge of his lips slightly upturned into a small smile. “I’m fine, Childe, I think I just need some rest and maybe something for the annoying headache I’m having,”
You pinch in between your eyebrows as Childe pulls back, smoothing your hair back and fussing over you. “Medicine, right? How ‘bout water? Do you need water?” You smile brightly at him despite the fatigue and he beams back, infinitely glad that you were awake and talking to him. He continues his line of questioning, “or maybe kisses? How about kisses? Hugs? I have plenty to give,” It was your laugh that let him know that you were feeling better, at least better than last night when he had just found you passed out on the floor.
“Just some tea is fine,” you reply, leaning forward to rest your head on Childe’s shoulder, him wrapping his arms around you in response.
“We’ve poured you a cup of tea already, I’ll go and fetch it,” Zhongli says, opting to give the two of you some time alone, but not before pressing a kiss atop your head, just as he had to Childe earlier.
“How do you feel? Are you in pain?” Childe yet again asks and you shake your head, “It’s manageable, don’t worry too much,” but your lover sighs and caresses your hair carefully. Zhongli comes back a moment later with Baizhu, who had arrived just as he was fetching your tea.
“Ah, Y/N, it’s a good sign you’re awake,” Baizhu smiles sweetly, much too sweet for your liking. Childe takes himself away from your bed and lets Baizhu do a complete check of your vitals and condition. He stood side by side with Zhongli, stance relaxed.
Baizhu isn’t stupid. He knows the kind of relationship the three of you have. He’s been on house call another time for Childe who had sustained quite the injury. He saw how you worried over him, and saw how Zhongli’s expression creased into anxiousness.
The situation was the same today. Except that you were the patient, Childe’s face was the one covered in anxiety and Zhongli… Well… He didn’t seem too bothered by the whole thing but if you looked closely, he was slightly tense than he usually was.
Baizhu just wanted to have his fun. How far were their boundaries, really?
“How are you feeling, dear?” Baizhu asks you as you’re sipping on the warm tea. “...Tired and… a splitting headache” You put away the cup of tea with a slight sigh, still feeling your muscles cry out for help. “Is that so?” Baizhu tilts your head up to look at him, fingers under your chin, and he peers into your eyes, a tad closer than he was before.
Zhongli and Childe tense at the motion, but don’t make a move to interfere. “Just checking your pupil dilation,” there’s an undertone of mischief in his voice, though you couldn’t tell if that’s just how he usually was or…
Baizhu’s hands slide down to your arm, taking your wrist and checking your pulse. A moment of silence passes, “Just a little fast but otherwise normal,” and lets go of your arm. He prescribes a medley of Chinese herbs to be taken as tea, telling Zhongli and Childe how to prep it. He finishes his examination rather quickly, “A normal fever, if it worsens tomorrow then you should call me once again,” he takes your hand and rubs it rather affectionately. You’re a bit surprised at the action.
As if that wasn’t enough, another one of his hands cup your cheek as he gives you a quick wink, “I wouldn’t mind getting called multiple times for such a charming face like yours,” the blush on your cheeks is suddenly not just because of the fever.
One would think that Childe would react faster to the pharmacist’s advances, but it was Zhongli who sets his hand down rather roughly on the other man’s shoulder, “Baizhu, that’s unnecessary,” The tall man says. Almost commands.
Childe was only mid step. The green-haired man chuckles, the white snake around his neck weirdly quiet today. “I’m merely examining your...interesting arrangements, they ARE a piece of art--” and the warning squeeze on his shoulder told him that he should be going.
He chuckles again, but lets himself be led out by Zhongli. Childe takes his place next to you, the mattress caving at his weight, “...Were you blushing just now?” he accuses you, eyes squinted.
“N-No… It’s the fever…” but your stutter tells him otherwise. He raises an eyebrow in question, obviously not believing you.
You gulp a little, “I was just caught off guard… it’s not that I enjoyed what he said…” you pout a little. Childe smiles at the cute look on your face, he was merely teasing. “Oh? Well, doesn’t matter, I’ve seen a lot more different expressions on your face than just a small blush,” there’s a quick smirk on his face and it’s here that your face turns into a tomato. You know exactly what he was insinuating.
Thankfully, Zhongli strolls in and sees the alarming redness on your face, concludes that Childe must have said something to fluster you again. “They still require some rest, Childe, perhaps leave the teasing for a little later,”
His tone is stern, but only because he knows you needed more sleep. Childe smiles but continues, “I think they’re just fine! See how their cute little face blushes just for me, Zhongli,” he takes your face in his hands and turns it towards Zhongli, who was...admittedly slightly enamored by the charming display.
Zhongli coughs into his hand and turns his gaze away, “Strange how energetic you are now, just a moment ago you were beside yourself with worry about Y/N,” It was your turn to tease Childe at the information Zhongli just gave out. “Oh? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to worry you so much!”
Before Childe could even reply Zhongli continues the sentiment, “Yes, he looked as if he was about to cry,”
“Th-That’s not!” Childe retracts from you, wanting to say that it wasn’t true but his words get stuck in his throat and it is now his turn to turn his gaze away in slight embarrassment. Zhongli and you snicker at his change in attitude but you were also curious as to what Zhongli was doing while you were fast asleep, “and you, Zhongli? I suppose you’re not one to worry too much,”
There’s silence on his end, with his arms crossed you can’t gauge his expression but he was having an internal battle on whether or not to tell you that he was actually just as worried. But...he had to be the strong one for the two of you. A ghost of a smile plays on his lips, strolls over to you and leans down to quickly kiss the side of your lips. “I worry in my own way, dear,” The way he says dear sends shivers down your spine, and you know in your heart that he had been worried too, just toned down to balance out Childe’s anxiousness.
Childe suddenly gets in bed with you, pulling you down for a rest. His chest is against your back, arms around your waist and mouth whispering in your ear “The two of us will always take care of you, believe me,” You smile a little and close your eyes. “I know,” just as Zhongli joins in, placing himself at your front.
Sandwich cuddles are your favourite and although you’re very much running a fever, the warmth from them is soothing. Zhongli drapes an arm on both of you, and leans down to kiss you on the forehead, brushing away stray strands of your hair as if you’re porcelain. When he pulls away he sees the look Childe gives him. A ‘Do-I-get-one-too?’ written all over his face.
Zhongli chuckles, leans in a little bit further to place one on the other man’s forehead, and watches the two of you drift in and out of sleep.
It’s certainly one of the most beautiful sights he’s witnessed.

A glass of some drink in your hand, bopping to the loud music, you looked for your best friend you came to the party with. It was pretty hard to find her due to the deafening music and the crowd in the place but you somehow managed it.
“Oh my god, where have you been y/n?!” She asked you smiling and not being able to focus in your eyes. She was drunk, you could at least say that much looking at her almost liquid form in front of you.
“Let’s get you out of here.” You said in a somehow normal voice in spite of the willies inside you.
“WHAT?”
“LET’S GET YOU OUT OF HERE!” You got closer to her ear and held her arm but she suddenly held back, leaving your hand empty.
“NOOO, I MET A GUY. I’M GOING WITH HIM.” She said laughing carelessly.
No, not again, you thought pitying yourself. That was not the first time this was happening and you had had to get her out of so many troubles before, so you at least wanted to make sure who that boy was this time.
“AND WHO IS THAT GUY?” You asked praying for him to not be one of those first year party predators.
“HE’S THERE, SEE?” She pointed to some tall boy coming through you with drinks in his hands.
“Y/BFF/N, I REALLY THINK WE SHOULD GO NOW.” You tried again.
“NOOO, YOU GO. I’M WITH HIM. BYEE!” Like that, she grabbed one of the drinks in his hands and dragged him to somewhere deep in the crowd, leaving behind a dumbfounded you. You sighed to yourself, facepalming and cursing at her inside. Right when you thought of leaving the place alone you heard someone yelling at you.
“HEY!” You turned to the source of the voice. A handsome and tall boy with beautiful dark eyes, straight black messy hair covering half of his eyes that were staring at you.
“WHAT?” You yelled back, now slowly finding the loud music annoying.
“DON’T WORRY HE’S A GOOD GUY.”
“AND WHO ARE YOU?”
“I’M- CAN WE GO TO A QUIETER PLACE IF THIS CONVERSATION WILL GO ON?”
You considered going to some quieter place with this stranger who looks safe but of course you could never know. If it weren’t for the alcohol in your system, you probably wouldn’t have accepted his request -especially not just to learn about the boy your friend has gone with- but not being sober enough, you just looked at him cautiously and nodded.
“OKAY THERE’S A BALCONY UPSTAIRS, LET’S GO THERE.” He said putting his hand on your arm and slowly directing you towards the stairs. Not wanting to lose him in the crowd you just let him touch you for this time. Going up the stairs, he directed you towards a room back at the house. He knocked on the door and listened if there were people inside but not hearing any voice, he opened it and invited you too after going in.
“Here, the door to the balcony is there, come in.”
The party music was still loud from where you were but not as much as before so he didn’t feel the need to shout.
Thinking about it twice, you decided to enter the room. What could have possibly gone wrong anyway? If things were to go to somewhere, at least he was hot enough for you to not regret it later.
After you got in, he locked the door behind you, letting your arm go. Feeling not secure, you looked at him, asking why did he do that with your eyes.
“Oh, I didn’t want anyone else in this room. I kinda get sick of people after some time. But if it makes you uncomfortable we can just unlock it, don’t worry I’m just here to sit in peace.”
“Why am I here, then?”
“Um, I was going to tell you about my friend so you could relax but I guess I dragged you with me here.” He answered, giggling shyly and plopping himself on the couch resting in the middle of the room unnecessarily. You thought he looked cute. His eyes shining, cheeks and tip of his nose is a rosy color from alcohol, lips plump and pink, a lock of hair covering his left eye.Okay, he was definitely too cute for you to not fall for and with the help of the alcohol in your blood, you got closer to him, reached your hand to push that one lock of hair from in front of his eye which was annoying you and stayed eyeing him like that for a while. When you realized what have you done, it was like you were trying to hold some boiled oil in your hands.
“OH shoot- oh I’m so sorry, I just- I - I JUST-“
Smile now gone from his beautiful face, he answered you, trying to hide any sign of shyness.
“Oh- It’s okay I MEAN It’s just, OKay, No need to APoloGize-“
“Yeah-“
“OH, we were talking about my friend. Isn’t it kinda hot here? Let’s go to the balcony.” He said leaving the couch, not waiting for you to go first.
You followed him to the balcony, an empty cup still in your hand. The balcony was really small so when he sat down on the floor, he put his legs between the iron bars and swang them through the air like a child.
“You were telling me about your friend.” You reminded, realizing he’s also not that sober.
“Ah, yes yes. Won’t you come and sit?” He patted to the floor beside him. Not knowing if this is a good idea, you still sat beside him and did the same thing with your legs. Turning your face to him, you realized he was really close. Perfect skin, beautiful shaped nose, perfect lips-
“My friend, Mingi, he likes your friend for a while now, so you can relax. He won’t harm her in any way.” He said without looking at you.
“Oh, wow wow stop there. How do you and your friend know who my friend is?”
“They are taking the same classes and he’s really into her so we all know her because of him I guess.”
“Oh, who are you? A gang?” You asked as a response to his words with sarcasm.
“Ahahaha, no, let’s call it a squad. We are in the basketball team and we all are close friends so that makes us a squad.” He looked at you while nodding his head. While looking at you he also realized you two were sitting pretty close to each other and he also realized he was not that sober. You were beautiful though.
“Oh, basketball team?? So I guess you know my brother.”
“Your brother? Who is your brother?” He asked. Yes he asked but something about your face was really distracting him so he actually couldn’t hear what you say, getting caught up in the movements of your lips.
“E-excuse me who did you say it was?” He asked again when he realized you have already said a name and were waiting his response.
“Wooyoung, you know? Jung Wooyoung.”
“OH MY GOD are you Wooyoung’s sister? He’s gonna kill me..”
“Why would he-“ your words were cut by two soft lips touching yours in a naive but exciting way.
Suddenly closing your eyes as a reflect, you gave in to the kiss and responded with your own lips’ movements. Too lost to turn back now, he put his hand on your cheek and took the kiss to a deeper state. Only leaving your lips for a small breath, he wasn’t sure how he successfully said the next words.
“Is it okay?”
—————————
Next day you woke up to an unwelcomed headache effecting your sight and making you wanna throw up. After what felt like infinity while you sat up on the bed, your sight finally cleared up and you started to look at your surroundings. A couch at the end of the bed, a door to a small balcony,
Balcony.
The pictures on the walls, a guy next to you.
A guy.
When you remembered what happened last night, you felt your heart drop to your stomach and your eyes popping out.
Okay, should I wait for him to wake up? What was his name? He looks so cute though. What was his name? Should I leave while he’s sleeping? His name, his name.. Maybe I should just leave.
Making your decision, you got off the bed trying not to wake the cute boy up. You put on your clothes from yesterday and left the room in the fastest way possible. You looked down at your phone and saw that you still had time for your classes so it was better for you to go back to your shared home with Wooyoung and take a shower.
What if he asks me where I was? Okay, just tell him that you were with y/bff/n. Studying. Studying? No he wouldn’t believe that. Just say you were watching a movie. Yes. Girls’ night.
Like that, you left for your home.
———————————
“Hi bro, I’m back.”
“Oh, hi Ms. nowhere to be found!”
You rolled your eyes at his sarcasm.
“I’m here Wooyoung.”
“I know, I can see. But last night you weren’t.”
“But right now I am?”
“Don’t act stupid, y/n. Where were you? I tried calling you hundreds of times.”
“I was at y/bff/n, watching movies, trying to help her with boy problems, you know, classic girls’ night.”
“Yeah, like I would believe this is your ‘classic girls’ night’. Anyways, I have to go to the training. I don’t have time for you. I’m just glad you’ve come home alive.”
He stood up from the table he was sitting and eating his cereal.
“What training, since when are you training for things?”
“You know I’m in the basketball team. We have a game tomorrow and I must be in my best shape. Also, the boys decided on that training thing by majority so I have no say on this.”
Training.. Basketball.. Boys.. OH MY GOD MINGI??? YUNHO????
Finally remembering the cute boy’s and his friend’s name, a sudden anxiety covered you as you watched your brother walk through the door.
OH MY GOD, WHAT IF HE LEARNS?!! HE’LL BE SO PISSED AT ME, OH MY GOD I SHOULD DO SOMETHING!
“HEY! I mean, Wooyoung, umm-“
“If you’re gonna ask for pocket money, I left some on the drawer next to your bed. Mom sent it so make sure to thank her. I’m out!”
Talking in one breath, he didn’t even let you talk to him, let alone stopping him from going.
OH FUCK FUCK FUCK WHAT AM I GONNA DO?!?! Call y/bff/n, she knows she knows she knows she knows.....
Wishing to yourself that she knows a way to get you out of this situation, you took your cellphone again and called her. Or.. Let’s say you tried calling her. Because no matter how many times you tried, her phone was off and there were nothing you could do about it. Feeling exhausted and worried, you went to your bedroom and plopped on your bed, still holding your phone in your hand, waiting a sign from your best friend.
———————
Feeling vibrations on your chest, you opened your eyes, realizing you had fallen asleep and it was your phone ringing. Without even bothering to look at who that was, you answered the call.
“Y/N TELL ME ALL ABOUT IT!!” Your best friend’s scream rang in your brain.
“Oh my god please don’t scream! Tell you Bout what?”
“That tall guy, Mingi’s friend, he asked for your number!!! Oh my god, you should tell me all about it!!!! NOW!!!”
“Wait wait wait, where did he see you? Did he tell you why does he want my number? What did he tell you? What do you know? Did you give him my number?”
“Okay okay look, this morning Mingi said he had basketball training with the team and I told him about Wooyoung and you and he told me that he saw you yesterday, going upstairs with Yunho. So I asked about who Yunho is and apparently they are best friends, they all are! And he then called Yunho and asked him to meet with us before the training and Yunho, Mingi and I had breakfast together and Yunho asked me if I could give him your number and I told him that I can’t without asking you and he just thanked me then they went to that training.”
“Oh my god, you and Mingi are so a thing right now, aren’t you? Thank you for not ggiving out my number I love you I’ll call you back! Muah!”
You ended the call without giving her enough time to process what’s happening, so you turned your phone off and throw it on bed somewhere.
Why could he possibly ask for your number? Okay he was cute. You actually remembered growing an interest in him at some point of the night but why would he ask for your number? It wasn’t like he wanted to repeat that night, was it?
What class was he in? Wait, class? OH MY GOD I MISSED THE CLASS!
Kicking the bed you lay in out of frustration and some kind of weird excitement, you took the pillow from under your head and put it on your face.
What should I do? Why am I so excited? Why did he ask for my number? OH MY GOD, Y/N, just go take a shower and cool down. It was just a one night thing!
After ten minutes which felt more like ten years, you stood up from bed and went to take a “think and decide” shower.
After that long shower, it was now decided that you would forget about that guy (which was your brother’s teammate - a very strong reason for your decision -) and move on without even waving at him if you ever see him again.
You got out of shower, too lazy to look at your messy closet for a shirt and you just went with the easy way; which was wearing from Wooyoung’s always clean and tidy closet.
I have never seen that shirt, wow. It looks comfy. Isn’t it kinda large for Wooyoung? Anyways I’m stealing it.
You put on a shirt and went to bathroom to blow dry your hair. Maybe it was because of the blow dryer’s sound that you didn’t hear the door opening and went on with drying your hair. After you’re done with your hair, you put it in a messy bun which did not look any of the beautiful messy buns you’ve seen online and left the bathroom to see two boys standing there and staring at you, one looking very confused and surprised at your sight while the other -who is also your brother- looking desperate.
Oh my god. NO!
“FOR GOD’S SAKE Y/N, I was about to pee my pants, GET OUT OF MY WAY!” Wooyoung yelled at you, throwing you out of the way while running trough the bathroom and leaving a still surprised Yunho and you alone.
You felt Yunho eyeing you from head to toe before trying to greet you.
“H-Hey,” he stuttered.
“Ah, hey.” You answered.
“Why didn’t you wake me up this morning?”
“I-I.. Shh, walls are pretty thin here, we don’t want Wooyoung to hear it, do we?!”
“Yeah- yes. Umm.. I was here to take my shirt back from Wooyoung but I guess I can’t have it back today..” he said, again looking at the shirt on you.
“Oh, Umm, I’m sorry. Was it yours?! I didn’t know,, I can give it back to you, it’s still clean, I just took a shower-“
“No, no you can keep it. Looks good on you.”
You blushed from the sudden compliment and smiled shyly.
“A-umm- is that so? Thank you, I’ll wash it and give it to Wooyoung tomorrow so he can hand it back to you-“
“No no as I said, you can keep it. Besides.. I guess I would prefer you handing it back to me if someone’s gonna do it. I- I would love to see you again..” Now he was the one blushing. “And you look really pretty in it..”
“T-thank you.”
“When can we-“
His words got cut by Wooyoung entering the room again.
“Oh, y/n! Take that shirt off and wear something else, it’s Yunho’s. I was gonna give it back to him.”
“Yes he told me, umm, I’m gonna wash it again and hand it back to him.”
“To him? When are you gonna see him again y/n? Just give it to him now.”
“No, no she can keep it. You know, it’s okay.” This time it was Yunho answering Wooyoung.
“What- Man you literally ate my brain saying this shirt is your favorite and lucky shirt and you wanted it back. Now you’re letting her keep it? You know you won’t be able to take it back if you gove it to her. I mean when are you gonna see each other again?”
You and Yunho got eye to eye and you both stuttered.
“I-“
“We-“
Then Yunho took the lead and said:
“She can keep it, anyways I have to go. See you later.”
“Ya, see you.” You and Wooyoung answered at the same time and that made Wooyoung look at you in a sudden and foxy manner.
“Don’t look at me like that, I meant it for you two.” You tried to save it by playing dumb and turned around after Yunho got out of the door hurriedly. Taking your first step through your bedroom’s door, what you heard stopped your tracks and made you felt like a bucket of boiled water is running down your head.
“I know about you and Yunho.”
You turned back to face Wooyoung so fast that you almost lost your balance.
“WHAT? I- I meant about what???”
“Don’t play the fool, y/n. Mingi told me all about it.”
“I-I..”
“It’s okay, just don’t lie to me ever again.”
“Aren’t you pissed?”
“Oh, you bet I am.. But I won’t get in your way. I’m doing this only because Mingi told me about how Yunho feels about you for a while.”
“For a while?”
“Yes, didn’t you know?”
“Didn’t I know what Wooyoung? Apparently I don’t know so What about telling me?”
“Mingi said Yunho had a crush on you for a while now and that was why he used Mingi and his crush -which is your bff- as an excuse to get to know you. You know, I’m very NOT pleased about this and the fact that my teammate and my sister did something yesterday but if you also like him, then I won’t do anything. Just don’t let Yunho know that I know about you. I don’t want our friendship to be ruined if anything happens between you two. Act like I don’t know anything, okay? And.. If you don’t like him, just don’t ever see him again.”
Wooyoung knows.. WOOYOUNG KNOWS?! YUNHO HAS A THING FOR ME?! Wait. I don’t know him yet.. WHAT IS HAPPENING FOR FUCKS SAKE!?!
“Wooyoung, you know, I don’t know anything about Yunho, I-“
“I guess you already know too much about him, to be honest.” He said implying sarcasm.
“Oh god, shut up!”
“Do whatever you want but just don’t get me involved y/n.” He said and turned his back to you, walking to his own room.
“Wooyoung-, you know,, thank you.”
“Yeah.” He went to his room, closing the door behind.
You also turned back to your room, searching for your phone to text to your best friend as soon as possible about all of it. When you finally found your phone, the notification of some message from an unknown number made your heart jump to your ears from excitement.
“Hey, it’s Yunho. I got your number from Yeosang. Apparently you two know each other. I was going to ask you if you’d like to meet again sometime. Not insisting though, just wanted to try my luck, i guess.”
You could imagine his face getting all red while texting this, memories coming back from the party last night. You were about to answer when your phone vibrated again with a new message.
“It’s totally okay if you don’t want to though. I’m sorry if that’s uncomfortable for you I can delete your number.”
“Hi Yunho, yes Yeosang is our childhood friend. And, you can keep my number. I’d also like to see you again :)”
You locked your phone screen, letting yourself fall on your bed with some beautiful feelings blooming inside you.
Well, for Yunho, it was one of the best and the worst days of his life knowing you’re also interested in him but also knowing he would have to talk to Wooyoung about it at sone point if things were to go somewhere...

3章 – Chapter 3
駆と恋の福引大作戦!
Kakeru and Koi’s Big Lottery Strategy!
1話 – Part 1
癒しをプレゼントかあ
Giving him relaxation as a present, huh
Kakeru:  Today’s “performer productivity measurement” compilation, is finally done, I’m tired~
Koi:  Rather than productivity measurement, it felt more like an athletic meet.
Kakeru:  Koi, your face became completely white from the candy eating competition… pff!
Kakeru:  Ahahaha! The staff was really laughing about it too!
Koi:  What the heck!  You too, during the bread eating competition, you started biting onto even the bread from the other lines, it was so hilarious!
Kakeru:  (Gulp)! So I was seen…!  The bread looked so shiny and delicious…!
Koi:  … Well, it did make everyone laugh.
Koi:  The staff and Tsukishiro-san all praised you, so it feels like the results were a huge success…  … Huh? That reminds me, where is Tsukishiro-san?
Kakeru:  He said he would be waiting in the waiting room.
Koi:  Oh! Well then, let’s stealthily go to his room… and let’s surprise him!
Tsukishiro:  Hah… It’s no use.  My shoulders are so stiff it gave me a headache…  I don’t want to think about it but… I wonder if it’s because I’m getting old?
Koi:  … Huh? Tsukishiro-san, he really seems to be in tired-mode?  (whisper-whisper)
Kakeru:  Yeah…… Now that you mention it, his complexion doesn’t look that good either. (whisper-whisper)
 Koi:  Are you okay~?  Tsukishiro-san.
Tsukishiro:  !  You scared me!  You two, when did you return?
Kakeru:  We returned just now.  Thank you for your hard work today!
Tsukishiro:  I see. I’m sorry I didn’t notice.  You two also, thank you for your hard work.
Tsukishiro:  In today’s photoshoot, the very lively expressions you two had were fantastic. You were very popular in the photoshoot location too.  I’m really proud of you too.
Kakeru & Koi:  Thank you very much!
Koi:  I’m really happy about that but……
 Tsukishiro:  Is something wrong?
Koi:  …… Tsukishiro-san, is your health okay?
Tsukishiro:  Huh?  … Ah, is it that…… you heard me talking to myself a little bit earlier?
Kakeru:  Yes, very clearly.  …… Are you okay?
Tsukishiro:  Ahaha, well that’s embarrassing.  It’s not that my physical condition is bad or anything.  I’m just a little tired……
Tsukishiro:  Thank you for your concern.
 Kakeru & Koi:  ……
Tsukishiro:  Well then, we should get going home!  After this I need to go to another location with Arata-kun and the others……
Kakeru:  Alright then, we will return to the dorms!
Tsukishiro:  Alright, please be careful.  I’m sure you both are tired so please make sure you get enough rest, okay?
Kakeru:  Tsukishiro-san, he said to us “I’m sure you both are tired so please make sure you get enough rest” but……
Koi:  That’s what Tsukishiro-san should be doing.
Kakeru:  Yeah…… He’s managing all 6 of us members all by himself…… It’s natural that it would be tiring.
Kakeru:  If it’s possible, it would be great if we could heal him but……
Koi:  Yeah that would be great……
Kakeru:  Tsukishiro-san is always helping us out so we are very grateful……  We could give him a present of something that could heal his fatigue?
Koi:  Giving him relaxation as a present, huh…… Hmm.
Kakeru:  I can’t really think of anything good this fast.
Koi:  …… For now, let’s just think about it while we are going home.

2話 – Part 2
福引いってみようよ!
Let’s go check out the lottery!
Koi:  Excuse me. May I have the bill?
Shop Employee:  Yes. Your total bill is 1000 en.  …… And also, this is a lottery ticket.
 Kakeru:  Lottery ticket?
Shop Employee:  Yes.  Right now, if you buy things in this shopping district or purchase food or drinks, you will recieve a lottery ticket.  You can try challenging yourself in getting more if you’d like.
Kakeru:  Sounds like fun!  Let’s go check out the lottery!
 Koi:  Yeah!
Kakeru:  Looks like the booth is over there.
Koi:  Let’s see~? The highest prize they have is a…… “2 day 1 night hot spring trip”!
Kakeru:  A trip to a hot spring!  That would be great, I wanna go-!
Koi:  … Oh! Wait a second Kakeru!
Kakeru:  What is it all of a sudden?
Koi:  This hot spring, Tsukishiro-san has said before that he wanted to go to this one!
 Kakeru:  Huh, really?
Koi:  Yeah, when I appeared on a travel variety television program, he said “I would like to visit a hot spring like that too”.
Kakeru:  I see. …… Ah!  This is it!
 Koi:  What is?
Kakeru:  For the conversation we had before about giving him relaxation as a present…… This is it!
Koi:  So that’s what you mean!  We can get the top prize hot spring trip, then gift it to Tsukishiro-san!
 Kakeru:  Yes*!
[*he says this in English]
Kakeru & Koi:  We’ve got no choice but to try it!!
Shop Supervisor:  …… Now then, draw one ticket please.
 Koi:  Alright…… (pulls one out)!
Shop Supervisor:  Oh!  It’s a hit! You’ve got the third-rank prize of 10 kilos of rice!
 Koi:  Huh!? Rice!?  Yay!!
Kakeru:  No no no! You shouldn’t be happy about that! What about our objective……!
 Koi:  Huh!? Oh yeah!
Kakeru:  A third-rank prize huh…… If you think about it normally, you should be happy getting a hit but.
Koi:  We wanted the first-rank hot spring trip prize.
Koi:  Well, of course it didn’t turn out that well~…… Boo-hoo.
Kakeru:  (After that I talked to Koi about it but, we couldn’t come up with any good ideas other than the hot spring trip……)
Kakeru:  (I wonder if there’s any possible way to get that hot spring trip.)
Kakeru:  (But if we just spend money and buy the trip ourselves, Tsukishiro-san will feel too reserved……)
Kakeru:  (If we win it in the lottery……, knowing that would help him relax the most……)
Koi:  (If I can draw from the lottery a bunch of times…… It might hit the first-rank prize too but, I would also have to buy a bunch of stuff in the shopping district……)
Koi:  (…… I wonder if there’s any way to get lottery tickets without buying things?)
Kakeru:  I know! When I have free time between (idol) jobs I’ll work at a part-time job!  And, how about if I could get paid in lottery tickets!?
Kakeru:  Ah~, but, Koi, I think he was really excited for a new game that just got released……
Kakeru:  …… Anyways, I’ll try getting a part-time job on my own!
Koi:  Uh huh. Getting paid with lottery tickets at a part-time job, is a great idea even if I say so myself!
Koi:  …… But, with Kakeru’s schedule, he seems quite busy this week……
Koi:  …… Anyways, I’ll collect lottery tickets on my own!  So it doesn’t cause trouble for the office,  I’ll try as hard as possible to work behind the scenes.
 (To be Continued)
3話 – Part 3
これも福引券のためだ!頑張れ俺!
This is also for the lottery tickets!  I’ve gotta do my best!
Kakeru:  ……Ma’am! I’ve finished the delivery!
Liquor Store Owner:  Thank you very much, Kakeru-chan.  Next can you go to Kimura-san’s house in the third district?
Kakeru:  Yes! …… I haven’t done this kind of part-time job in a long time, as I thought it’s pretty fun!
Koi:  …… One, two, three…… No matter how many I count…… the amount of plates I have to wash never ends!!
Restaurant Owner:  New guy!  Wash these extra plates too!
Koi:  Okay! …… Ugh!  This is also for the lottery tickets!  I’ve gotta do my best!
Koi (wearing a pink bear costume):  (After that I used that stimulus to work hard at my part-time jobs between my idol jobs……)
Kakeru (wearing a brown dog costume):  (…… I absorbed myself in focusing on getting lottery tickets from my part-time jobs…… I’m glad that it hasn’t taken that long for me to come this far!)
Koi:  (…… But after this part-time job is over, I am completely finished with no problems! With the lottery tickets I’ve gathered, I will get the hot spring trip!)
 Kakeru:  (but…… Today’s part-time job is an issue……)
Koi:  (…… It’s too hot!  I can barely breath!)
Kakeru:  (Wearing an animal costume in this kind of weather is really intense!)
Event Staff:  …… Alright!  Get ready children!  Let’s dance with the dog and his friends!
Koi:  (W-We have to dance in these circumstances!?  …… Th-That’s too harsh!  However, I have no choice but to just do it!)
Event Staff:  Wow!  Bear-san, you’re really good at dancing!
Kakeru:  (Huh!? Th-That bear…… Those dance steps look way too hard for being in a costume!)
Kakeru:  (Grr……! I can do that too!  As part of Six Gravity, I can’t lose here!)
Koi:  (What!? Over there, how is he doing such sharp movements in a costume that is so difficult to move in!?)
Koi:  (Cr-Crap! If this is how it’s going to be, I’ve gotta do better!)
 Event Staff:  B-Bear-san and Dog-san….. Y-You guys are amazing……
 Koi:  (How about this--!)
 Kakeru:  (Take this--!!)
Event Staff:  H-Hey…… you guys are getting a little too close……
Koi:  (H-Huh…… My eyes are getting a little……)
 Kakeru:  (It’s getting dark……)
 Event Staff:  Wa-Wait a second!  Bear-san!?
 Kakeru:  Hmm…… Where am I?
Koi:  Huh? Why am I sleeping?  …… Hmm, Kakeru?
Kakeru:  Koi!? What are you doing here!?
Koi:  I was…… doing a part-time job wearing an animal costume, and while I was dancing I started to lose consciousness……
Kakeru:  Then, that pink bear…… That was you!?
Koi:  Then the brown dog was Kakerun*!  …… No wonder I thought you’re movements were so good.
[*Koi’s nickname for Kakeru]
Kakeru:  Ahahaha…… But why the heck were you doing a part-time job wearing a costume?
Koi:  Actually…… I, really didn’t want to give up on getting the hot spring trip from that lottery.
Koi:  So, I was secretly doing part-time jobs, and I thought I could get paid with lottery tickets.
Kakeru:  Huh!? You too!?  I’ve been doing the exact same thing.
Koi:  Seriously!? …… Wow.  We have the exact same way of thinking.  I’m a little surprised.
Kakeru:  Really, as expected of my partner!
Koi:  …… Well then, let’s go together.
Kakeru:  To go challenge the lottery!
 (To be Continued)
4話 – Part 4
それじゃあ!レッツ福引!
Well then!  Let’s do the lottery!
Kakeru:  …… With both of us together, we’ve gathered this large mountain of lottery tickets.
Koi:  If we have this many, Pulling the first-rank prize, is not just a dream!  Probably!
Kakeru:  Yeah! …… Well then!  Let’s do the lottery!
Koi:  …… “If we have this many, Pulling the first-rank prize, is not just a dream!”…… I also thought that for a while.
Kakeru:  I didn’t think, that they would all be just consolation prizes of tissues……
Koi:  Ahh! Why! We had so many so many lottery tickets and every one of them was a loser, that’s a miracle on it’s own!
Koi:  …… But, if you really think about it, there’s no possible way that unlucky Kakeru-san would be able to get the best prize.
Kakeru:  …… Disappointing Koi-kun boasted about an ultimate weapon, and I was hoping it would be spontaneous luckiness……
 Koi:  …………
 Kakeru:  …………
Koi:  Crap! Kakeru!  How many more lotteries are there after this?
Kakeru:  The thing is……. We don’t have any more lottery tickets.  We have a bunch of vouchers but…… we are lacking just one more.
Koi:  Just one more…… Let’s look around to see if we dropped one anywhere!
 Koi:  Voucher…… Voucher…
 Kakeru:  Voucher…… Otherwise a lottery ticket……
 Koi:  Huh…?
 Kakeru:  Oh!!!
 Kakeru & Koi:  There’s a voucher!
 Kuroda:  ……
Kakeru:  Wait…… This animal holding the voucher in it’s mouth is……
Koi:  Ku-Kuroda!? You, why are you in a place like this!?
 Kuroda:  ……
Kakeru:  Kuroda, is it possible that you were trying to help us…?
Koi:  O-Oh! That’s gotta be it!  …… Thank you Kuroda.  We won’t give up until the very end!
Kakeru & Koi:  Kuroda, thank you for the voucher!!
 Kuroda:  ……
Kakeru:  Alright…… Koi!  This is our last chance!  Let’s challenge the lottery together!
 Koi:  Yeah!
Kakeru:  (It’s certainly true that I may be unlucky but……)
Koi:  (I may be called disappointing but……)
Kakeru & Koi:  …… We always have resolve when we make a choice!
Shop Supervisor:  Oh, it’s a big hit!!  First-rank prize!!
 Kakeru & Koi:  …………
 Kakeru & Koi:  Yay!!
Koi:  Look! Kakeru!  Look at that shiny gold ball!
 Kakeru:  Oooh…… I’m so happy……
Koi:  …… We finally did it.  We got the first-rank hot spring trip prize by combining our power.
Kakeru:  Yeah…… I hope Tsukishiro-san is happy about it.
Koi:  He will definitely be happy!  Next time we see him during a job, let’s give it to him as a present!  This will be so fun!
Kakeru:  Yeah! But…… that would be great but……
Kakeru:  …… What should we do with this large amount of pocket tissues…?
 Koi:  …… A-Ahahaha!
 ~END~
[As I was typing this I thought, rice is such a weird prize.  But then I remembered, I actually won a bag of rice in a raffle once, and THAT was the big prize. LOL.  It was at a booth for some brand of rice at a convention so it made sense that they were giving away rice there. XD]
[I also seem to have bad luck with lotteries lately, or specifically the gasha in Tsukipara.  I really wanted some of the Circus themed cards since I love anything circus themed and I didn’t have any (I wasn’t playing the game when that event happened) so I planned on buying a few but I ended up having to buy 5 of the 6-card gashas before I finally got one~  I spent so many Tsukino jewels though and I didn’t get Rui’s card which I wanted the most > <  I got Shun’s card btw~]
[Anyways~  chapter 4 with Shun and Kai will be up next~]

I glanced down at my phone and snickered at the picture Quatre had sent me of him and Mariemaia.  Quatre had a fake mustache, looking like a B-movie villain as Instructor H.  Mariemaia had a fake nose, mustache, and a stuffed mushroom toy on her head, clearly portraying Professor G.  They were both holding up gunpla models and trying to look serious.
“Hey, who’s sending you amusing texts?” Trowa asked, elbowing me in the side.  “That’s my gig.”
I swiveled the barstool I was sitting on, holding my phone up for him to see.
“…Quatre…?” Trowa said slowly, seeming confused.
“Yeah, I dunno, we’ve been getting along really good lately.”
           “Okay, but Quatre?”
“What’s the matter, Tro, ya jealous?”
           Trowa hesitated.
I cracked up.  “What, are you afraid Quat’ll steal your important job of making sarcastic comments to me throughout the workday?”
“It’s a time-honored duty,” Trowa said solemnly, but there was something off in his expression.
“No, really, what’s up?” I asked, looking into his eyes.
“Nothing,” Trowa said with a relaxed shrug.
“Do you still have a crush on Quatre?!” I asked, getting gleeful.
“When did I ever?” Trowa asked, arching his eyebrow.
“When we were all lonely teenage boys, and the two of you would sneak off together to blow each other’s flutes.”
Trowa rolled his eyes, taking a long pull from his beer.  “The only two of us who were crushing on each other were you and Yuy.”
“You bastard, I can’t believe you would bring that up!”
“You just accused me of… and I quote, ‘blowing Quatre’s flute’.”
“Yeah, but I told you that Heero thing in confidence, when I was very inebriated.”
“And you should have known that I would find the perfect moment to exploit it.”
“You’re the worst best friend ever.  I’m gonna promote Hilde to Best Friend Number One.”
“Hey, you do what you gotta do,” Trowa said, seemingly unaffected by my very real and serious threat.
I sighed loudly, signaling the bartender for another drink.  I turned back to Trowa, eyes suspicious.  “So you’re not harboring latent homosexual feelings for Quatre?”
           “Sorry to disappoint, but no.”
“Oh, well that’s good, ’cause he’s totally hittin’ it with Dorothy.”
“That cannot even possibly be true.”
           “I’m dead serious.”
“Is this like your Wufei and Sally theory, because I gotta say…?”
“That one’s true, too.  Look, I can’t control the heteros and their weird mating choices, I can only report them to you factually.”
“Yeah, okay, but… Quatre?  And Dorothy?”
“That’s Secretary of State Catalonia to you,” I said, snickering as I did every time Dorothy and her damn eyebrows showed up on my television.
           “Who is voting for her?”
“Apparently Quatre and the entire Maganac Corps, which is like what, ninety percent of the voting population?”
“There aren’t that many members.  More like seventy… three percent,” Trowa corrected me.
“The point still stands,” I said, gesturing at him with my drink.  “That woman slept her way into office.”
“Eergh,” Trowa said with a shudder.  “You’re serious?  Do we need to sit Quatre down and have an intervention?”
“I already tried,” I said with a sad shake of my head.  “And now every time that I hear she’s gonna be coming to L1 for something, I’m gonna keep picturing their booty call and I won’t be able to sleep for days.”
           “You’re ridiculous.”
“You say that, but you know I’m right.”
“Oh my god, Quatre and Dorothy…” Trowa muttered, then kicked back his entire drink.  “Why do you keep telling me these horrible things?”
“Because I care about you, obviously.”
           “That makes no sense.”
           “Says you, bub.”
“How many drinks have you had?”
“Not enough?” I said with a grin that announced I was clearly lying.  I had definitely bypassed my usual self-imposed limit, but lately I just found Marty’s depressing.
“Yeah, okay, I think it’s time to head home,” Trowa said, taking my beer and drinking it for me.
“Jerk,” I said.  “Wanna come over and hang?”
Trowa blinked slowly, then shrugged.  “Yeah, sure.”
“Cool, man, cool,” I said, wobbling to my feet. God, I was lame, getting completely plastered like a kid.  I was an adult now.  I was practically thirty.
“Are you going to make it to your place?” Trowa asked, looking back as he led the way to my apartment.
“Yeah, sure, I’m fine,” I said, laughing for no reason.
“Maxwell, get it together,” Trowa said with a sad head shake.
           “I’m so together I’m like a puzzle.”
Trowa didn’t deem that worth responding to.
I gave my own cleverness a pity laugh and followed Trowa up the stairs.
My apartment was a swinging bachelor pad, and I was more than happy to welcome Trowa into my home.  If only the damn key would fit in the lock.
“Give me that,” Trowa said, fingers brushing mine as he took the key away.
“I was just about to get it…” I protested.
“No, no you weren’t,” Trowa said, sticking the key in the lock and turning it with ease.
“Are you a wizard?” I marveled.
“Yes, Duo, you’ve discovered my secret,” Trowa said, ushering me inside.  “During my free time, I wear a tall hat and carry a magic wand, and I go to Heero and Quatre’s Dungeons and Dragons parties.”
“Ahahaha, I can see that,” I cackled.  “They’re such nerds,” I added for good measure.
“Oh, I thought Quatre was your new BFF.”
           “Yeah, my nerdy BFF.”
“So does the nerdy BFF rank higher or lower than the sexy and witty BFF?”
“I already told you that Hilde’s number one, HA!”
“Bantering with you when you’re drunk lacks a certain amount of… finesse…” Trowa mused, sitting me on the couch.
“Sorry I haven’t been finessing you,” I said, laying my head on the back of the couch.  “What’re all these black spots in my eyes?”
“How much did you drink?” Trowa asked, leaning in front of me and looking into my eyes, a slight wrinkle between his brows.
“I might have had a drink or twelve before you came…” I said, trying to count the actual number of drinks I’d had and failing.
Trowa sat down next to me, looking worried.
           “I’m fine, Tro, no worries.”
“It’s not that I don’t believe you,” Trowa said, “but I don’t believe you.”
“No, really,” I said.  “It’s not like I’ve been binge drinking to fill the sad, lonely void in my heart.”
           Trowa stared at me.
“Oh, damn, is that what I’ve been doing?” I muttered.  Then I laughed for good measure.  Gotta keep things light.
“You are in a sad state,” Trowa commented, parking himself next to me and bumping my knee with his.
We were both quiet for a while.
“Is this it?” I finally said.
Trowa turned his eyes on me, calmly waiting for me to continue.
“I guess I spent my youth just surviving, and now here I am, happy peaceful life and all that shit, but like… is this it? Is this what life is supposed to be?”
“What else should it be?” Trowa prodded.
“I don’t know, but Christ, like is this what we were fighting for?  For people to have really fucking pointless nine to five office jobs where they don’t actually do anything, so they can get paychecks, so they can get drunk and forget about how much their lives suck?”
Trowa was looking at me funny.
           “What?!” I asked.
“I think you’re just bored, to be honest,” Trowa said.  “And also having a midlife crisis.”
I mused that over for a bit.  “Yes… bored… yes!  So simple, yet so deep.”
“I don’t know about deep,” Trowa said.  “I was just stating the obvious.”
“No, no, you are way deep, man,” I said, patting him on the back.  “You just get me.”
“Do I?” Trowa said, and there was something sad in his eyes.
“Hey, what’s that about?” I asked climbing up his arm and staring into his eyes.  They were really green and kind of bewitching, and I was clearly not sobering up fast enough.
“What?” Trowa asked, leaning his face away from mine.
“I wish I could see inside of your brain,” I said mournfully.
“I’m going to get you some water,” Trowa said, moving to get up.
“Don’t leave me!” I protested, holding onto his arm.
“Duo, your kitchen is two feet away.”
“Troooowaaaa, I’m having an existal… eximastential crisis here.”
“What do you want me to do about it?”
           “Huh,” I said.  “No clue.”
Trowa let out a long, exasperated breath.  He stayed seated, and I stayed holding onto his arm.
“Sorry, Tro, I’m terrible company tonight,” I said, resting my cheek against his shoulder.
“It’s not really different from any other night,” Trowa said in what I interpreted as a fond way.
“Ha, burn,” I said, letting my eyes slide shut. I was suddenly very tired.
I woke up tucked in my bed with a horrible headache.
Sitting up made everything in my body go crazy, but lying back down didn’t help.
And why did my damn phone have to be ringing?
“Shut uuuuup,” I groaned, flailing my hand around on the nightstand.  I managed to knock the phone on the ground, making me groan louder.
I didn’t remember getting out of bed to get my phone.  I did remember suddenly realizing that I was lying prone on the floor, with my phone jammed under my back.  I rolled off of it with a quiet string of curses and picked it up to check the missed calls.
           Preventer’s Headquarters.  Damn.
I hit redial, and held the phone in the general direction of my ear.
           “Maxwell, get down here now.”
           “Huh?” I said.
           “Office.  Now.”
           “But… it’s Sunday… I think?”
“Oh, well in that case let me call the terrorists and let them know that they need to put their plans on hold because it’s your day off.”
           “Thanks, Wufei, you’re the man.”
           Wufei hung up on me.
I groaned, crawling across the floor in the general direction of my bathroom.  Surely a shower would solve all of my problems.
I don’t know how I got to the office. Trowa had left some hangover meds sitting out on my kitchen counter for me, which probably helped.
“What did you do last night?” Hilde asked, giving me a onceover as she held the elevator door.
“Sadly, no one,” I said, sidling up next to her and trying not to fall over.
“A tragedy,” Hilde said, hitting the door’s close button.
“The real tragedy is why the hell are we at the office on a perfectly good day off?”
“Because some stupid kids are fancying themselves revolutionaries, and we have to clean up their mess.”
           “Damn, that sounds bitingly familiar.”
“Huh?” Hilde said, then gave it some proper thought. “Ha, yeah.  You guys were so off track with your gundams and your military aggression.”
“What a clusterfuck that all was, good thing you straightened me out,” I said, holding the open door button as Hilde got out.
“No one could ever straighten you out,” Hilde said, sounding more serious than the previous tone of the conversation.
“Was that a gay joke or a subtle jab about me leaving you on L2?”
“Maybe a little bit of both,” Hilde said breezily, pushing her way into the office.  “Good morning, Preventers.”
“Good morning!” Andrea chirped, looking perfectly put together.
           I eyed her suspiciously.
“Coffee?” she offered, pointing to the coffee maker.
I eyed it with disdain, then shrugged. “Yes, please.”
Sally was wheeling the white board out of her office, and all kinds of important-looking things were scribbled on it. “Are we all here yet?”
“I sent Barton down to the laboratory to get Winner and Yuy,” Wufei said, rising to his feet from behind his desk.
“Okay,” Sally said.  “Maxwell, Warner, you look like shit.”
“But you look gorgeous,” I said, trying to look winsome and charming.
           Sally snorted.
“I just went to bed an hour ago,” Daniel complained.
“Poor baby,” Sally said, dropping a huge file on Daniel’s desk, making him jump.  “Maybe you’re in the wrong line of work.”
Daniel looked confused, tired, and a little bit like he needed a hug.
“Here ya go,” Andrea said, handing me a mug of coffee.
“Thanks, darling,” I said, accepting and downing the swill that our office deemed ‘coffee’.
“Hail, hail, the gang’s all here,” Sally said, watching as Trowa came into the office with Quatre and Heero in tow.  “Let’s get started, then, shall we?”
Wufei joined Sally at the white board, pointing to some squiggles.  “At 0300 hours, shots were reported at the Vice President’s residence.  Her body was found shortly afterwards.  A group calling themselves Black Freedom posted a video online, taking credit for the assassination.”
           “Black Freedom?” I snorted.
“Maxwell, a woman is dead,” Wufei snarled at me.
“It doesn’t make the name any less stupid.”
“We’re dispatching a team to Earth immediately to investigate the scene,” Sally cut in, knowing that Wufei and I were heading towards yet another argument.  “Maxwell and Schbeiker, that’s you.  Yuy will lead forensics.”
I was halfway through a high five with Hilde about our free vacation to Earth, not to mention the potential to discharge our firearms on bad guys, when I realized that Heero was coming with us.
Heero Yuy, dressed in women’s jeans and a lab coat, holding a mug from that godawful sci-fi Gundam series that had aired last year. Heero Yuy, who wrote short novellas for lab reports and made sure you read every inane detail.  Heero Yuy, who Quatre thought for some inexplicable reason was the man of my dreams.
I didn’t miss the grin that Quatre shot me at the ‘happy’ news.
           God help me.
 - 6 -
I was at the spaceport thirty minutes after Wufei concluded our briefing.  Neither Duo nor Hilde had arrived, so I waited awkwardly by myself.
Quatre kept sending me messages with excessive smiley faces.
I turned off my phone, crossing my arms over my chest and tapping my foot impatiently.
Hilde and Duo came strolling in twenty minutes later, arm-in-arm and laughing about something or other.
           Probably me.
“Hey, Yuy,” Hilde greeted me.  “Let’s go,” she said, pointing in the direction of the shipyard.
“Fine,” I said, falling into stride with them.
“You don’t have to be so bitchy about it,” Duo muttered.
“How am I being bitchy?” I asked, feeling both irritated and nervous.  Duo always brought out the worst in me.
“You with your sour looks and your crossed arms,” Duo said dismissively, scanning his ID to open the gate to the shipyard.
I wanted to retort, but Duo was already halfway to the ship.
Hilde and I scanned our IDs and followed.
The ride to Earth wasn’t much better.  Duo and Hilde joked and laughed up in the front, while I sat in the back silently.
I just wanted to be in my lab, autopsying bodies or helping Quatre build new top secret machinery.
When we landed, we were greeted by the South American branch of the ESUN Bureau of Investigation, and were escorted to Vice President Fernandez’s house.
“Why does it pay so damn well to be a politician?” Duo muttered as we pulled up to the estate.
“Kickbacks?  Money laundering?  Extortion?” Hilde suggested
“Shit, we got into the wrong business.”
“Most people are already rich before they become politicians,” I said, because they were both clearly missing the point. “Relena’s salary as Vice Foreign Minister is less than what you make.”
“Oh, so you have to buy your way into politics?” Duo said with a snort.  “Makes sense.”
“And then you get even richer with the kickbacks and money laundering and extortion?” Hilde said.
“Relena isn’t like that,” I said.
“Relena, Relena, Relena,” Duo said, getting out of the car.  “Not everyone can be as perfect as your precious Relena.”
“And not every politician is as corrupt and self-serving as you think,” I said, following him up the winding walkway.
“You two are cute when you argue,” Hilde said, pinching Duo’s cheek.
           Duo grimaced at her.
“We’re not arguing,” I said, because we weren’t.
Suarez, our ESUNBI guide, stopped us at the front door, which was crosshatched with yellow crime scene tape.  “We’ve preserved the scene as best as we could,” he said, pulling the door open and breaking the tape.  “That’s our forensics team, now,” he added, gesturing to the van that had just pulled into the driveway.  “They’re at your disposal.”
“Okay, Yuy, you take the lead,” Hilde said. “Duo and I want to take a quick look at the crime scene, then we’ll head out.”
I nodded, feeling more comfortable already. Collecting fibers, that was something I was good at.
“Dr. Yuy,” Suarez said, gesturing politely for me to go inside.
“Don’t touch anything,” I warned, and I could feel Duo rolling his eyes as he came in behind me.
The body had already been taken to the morgue, so I set the forensics team on scouring the crime scene, a second story bedroom.
“Looks like it was two guys, one waiting in the garden while the other scaled the wall and climbed in the window,” Hilde reported to me.
“Okay, I’ll check the garden and the outlying area next,” I said.  I was examining the blood splatter as she talked, only half-listening but sure to recall it later.
“Duo and I are going to head into town,” Hilde continued.  “Meet us at the hotel whenever you’ve finished, and call us if you find anything important.”
“Yes,” I said, waving her off.
“See ya,” she said, striding out of the room.
Hilde and I had been working together for years, and I felt at ease with her.  She trusted me to do my job, and I trusted her to do hers.
When I’d finished at the crime scene, one of the forensic investigators took me to their lab.
Hilde and Duo came to get me when it had gotten to midnight.  I hadn’t noticed the passage of time.
“Time to get some sleep, Yuy,” Hilde reprimanded me.
The three of us went back to the hotel, where we found that Une had reserved two rooms for us.
“Whaddya say, Hil, just like old times?” Duo asked, waggling his eyebrows at her.
“You’re a boy and you smell,” Hilde said.  “I’ll take the single.”
           “Hildeeeeee,” Duo gasped out, aghast.
I was with Duo, I would much rather have had the single room.
“Well, then I guess it’s just like even older times,” Duo said, giving me an amused look after he got over pouting.
           “Don’t remind me,” I said.
“Duo is the worst roommate,” Hilde chimed in.
“Don’t I know it,” I muttered, pressing the elevator button for the eighth floor.
“In what way am I possibly the worst roommate?!” Duo protested.
“In every way,” I said flatly.
           Hilde snorted.
“Hilde Schbeiker, don’t be telling lies,” Duo said, waggling his finger at her.  “We had good times in the scrapyard.”
“Yeah, real good times,” Hilde said.  “Like how I had to wash all your clothes and your dishes, and clean up your room so we wouldn’t get cockroaches.  Good times.”
           “I’m not that messy.”
“You used to leave half-eaten sandwiches in my pillow,” I interjected.  “What possible reason would there be to put a sandwich in a pillow?”
“To save them for later, obviously,” Duo retorted.
Hilde was cracking up as the elevator door opened.
“It was my pillow!” I snapped.
“Yeah, well I didn’t want them in my pillow,” Duo said with a shrug.
“Holy Christ,” Hilde gasped out, exhausted from laughing.
I was secretly pleased, despite the annoyed look on my face.  Duo and I had always communicated best by being contrary with one another, and when I stopped with the stuttering and social awkwardness, apparently we still could.
“Maybe you two should room together since you’re best friends now,” Duo muttered.  “We’re in 810,” he said, pointing to the sign outside of the elevator that directed rooms 801-820 to the left and 821-840 to the right.
“And I’m conveniently in 811,” Hilde said as we all moved towards the left.
I stopped mid-step, reaching for Hilde’s arm and yanking her towards me.
Hilde was going for her gun with her other arm, and Duo already had his out and pointed.
The sound of gunshots splintered the quiet of the hallway.
We were all back in the alcove with the elevator, the only cover we could take.
“Fucking amateurs,” Duo muttered, pulling another gun out of the holster at the small of his back and pressing it into my hands. “Should’ve waited until we were separated and in our rooms.”
“I-I can’t take this,” I said, pushing the gun back at him with shaking hands.
“I can’t babysit you, Yuy,” Duo snarled, whirling around the corner with his gun pointed, firing shots before quickly ducking back behind the safety of the wall.
“They’re shooting from a room, so they’ve got more cover than us,” Hilde murmured into Duo’s ear.
They were busy planning strategy while I was shaking like a coward.
Count back from ten and reset.  Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
I took a deep breath, my hands steadying. I hadn’t held a real gun in years, yet it still felt like second nature to me.
           “Okay, on three,” Hilde whispered.
“Three!” Duo said, and they both rushed into the hall, sliding their bodies into doorways as they fired.
I was providing cover fire for them, when I felt a prickling at the back of my neck.  I whirled around to face the other end of the hallway, firing off three shots in rapid succession without registering what I was doing.
The man cried out, dropping to the floor. His gun clattered from his hand, and a bullet went wild down the hallway.
There was so much blood.  I knew right away that I’d hit something vital.  The man was dying, a pained gurgling sound coming out of his throat.
No, not man.  Boy.  He couldn’t have been any older than I was during Operation Meteor.
I dropped my gun and vomited.
Duo was suddenly at my side, pulling me back into the alcove.  “Yeah, Wu, we’ve got two shooters, one dead and one incapacitated.  Schbeiker’s been shot, but it’s just a flesh wound, or so she said as she bled all over me.  She’s cuffing the first shooter…  Mm, no one else is making an appearance, but we can’t be sure that they’re the only two…   Yeah, thanks.  I’ll check back in later,” Duo concluded, turning off the radio in his ear.  “Heero, you okay?”
“Do I look okay?” I asked harshly.
“Dumb question, I know,” Duo said, rubbing my back as I sat with my head between my knees, trying to breathe deeply.  “But we’re not out of this yet, okay?  So can you be Super Soldier Heero Yuy for a little longer?”
“No,” I said flatly, but I was already counting again.  Ten nine eight seven six fivefourthreetwoone. I took a deep breath, and I was calm. I shrugged Duo’s hand away from me.
           “You’re good?”
           “Yeah.”
“Good.  We need to cover Hilde to the elevator,” Duo said, pointing with his finger to the right while he pointed his gun to the left.
I took watch of the right side, eyes glancing over the crumpled body in my sweep but never lingering on it.
           Hilde whistled at us.
           Duo whistled back.
Hilde started making her way down the hallway cautiously, the first shooter handcuffed and being pushed along in front of her.
I kept focused on my side of the hallway, eyes taking in all of the doors.  I could feel Hilde’s approach, knew that she was almost there, just as a door eased open.
“Don’t move!” I ordered, gun, trained on the doorway.
It was an older man, and he looked back at me uncertainly.
“Police business, please stay in your room,” Duo interjected, though he wasn’t looking at the man.  He had the left side to watch.
Hilde shoved the shooter into the alcove with us and hit the down button of the elevator.
“What’s going on?” the man questioned.  “I heard the shots, and…”
“Just stay in your room,” I said, echoing Duo.
The man nodded, retreating inside and closing the door.
“Holy fuck, that was unnecessary for my heart,” Duo muttered, backing into the alcove with his gun still trained in front of him.
“ESUNBI has the first floor secured,” Hilde said, getting into the elevator with the prisoner.
Duo and I got in, and we started descending.
I didn’t let myself relax, because I knew if I turned off the machine, I would break down.
“How’s the arm, Hil?” Duo asked, leaning against the back wall and looking casual.  In actuality, he was watching the now docile prisoner like a hawk.
           “Peachy keen,” Hilde said.
“You and Heero head to the hospital, and I’ll escort our friend here to the interrogation.”
“I’m fine-” Hilde started to protest.
“Get it patched up and meet me at the station.”
“Are you trying to give me orders?”
“No one can make you do anything you don’t want to.”
“True enough,” Hilde agreed, nudging the shooter out the door.
There was a team of agents waiting for us. Hilde and I got pushed off towards one car, while Duo and the prisoner went towards another one.
“You okay?” Hilde asked in the car.
           “Fine,” I said.
“You seem… different,” she said, eyeing me up and down.
           I met her gaze evenly.
“Less like a lab geek, more like the savior of the world and setter of his own broken bones,” she said.
I continued to stare at her.
Hilde smiled.  “Weirdly, I like you better as a dork.”
           “Hn.”
Hilde touched my hand lightly, then curled her fingers around mine.
I took a breath, exhaling it slowly.
“It’s been a long time since you’ve been in a fire fight, huh?”
           “Yeah,” I said quietly.
“You saved our asses, Yuy,” Hilde said.  “He was already firing when you took him out.”
I suddenly wanted to vomit again, but I held it in, bile burning up my throat.
Hilde studied my face, then turned to face forward, squeezing my hand.
I squeezed back, watching the passing lights of the city.
At the hospital, Hilde and I both got looked at by the doctor, and I got handed a pill and glass of water for ‘shock’.
“I’m not in shock,” I muttered, but took the pill anyway.
One of the ESUNBI agents interviewed me about the shooting, then Hilde emerged from getting her arm bandaged up, and we were off to the police station.
“Told you they were amateurs,” Duo muttered as we came in.  “He was talking before I’d so much as started my bad cop/bad cop routine.”
“What, you already broke him?!” Hilde asked. “Why didn’t you wait for me…?”
“Sorry, Hil, looks like this case is wrapped up,” Duo said, standing up and leading us through the door we’d just come through. “He gave up Black Freedom’s headquarters on L2, and basically gave me a detailed biography of every member.  I know everyone’s favorite color, their zodiac signs, whether they’re a lefty or a righty...”
“I knew I shouldn’t have gone to the hospital,” Hilde muttered.
“But look at this gorgeous bandage,” Duo said, giving her a charming grin.
The two of them went back and forth the entire way to the hotel.
“God, is that the sun rising?” Duo muttered, shielding his eyes as he got out of the car.
“Good work, agents,” the ESUNBI driver said.
“Yeah, thanks for all the help,” Hilde said.
“What help?” Duo muttered as the car drove off. “Anyway, can we just go the hell to sleep already?”
We went up to the tenth floor where our new rooms were.  The eighth floor was still blocked off with yellow police tape.
My skin crawled as we got off the elevator.
Duo opened the door to our room, bidding Hilde goodnight before flopping straight onto one of the double beds.
I took off my shoes at the door, then went to the bathroom to wash up.
           Duo was fast asleep.
I pulled out my phone and tried looking at websites and playing some games.  I felt anxious, and it was hard to concentrate.  I tried lying down and closing my eyes, but my eyelids projected an endless series of images.
I should have gotten more pills at the hospital.
I sat curled up in the corner of the bed, watching Duo sleep.
