Low key feel bad for Impa in BotW. She was so excited and happy to see Link again, "I may look much older, but it's still me," and then she realizes... he doesn't remember her. She's spent a hundred years waiting, just like Zelda, and when her hope comes walking through the door, someone who carries the weight of the Calamity on his shoulders just as she did, someone who lived and experienced everything she has after her friends/family around her age are slowly dying off... he doesn't know her. Or anything of what they experienced.

She recovers quickly, but like... ouch.

The fact that Atreus went straight from Brok’s death to hunting deer just hurts my soul in so many ways.

Yeah, it’s a callback to the first game, but the callback has so much emotional weight and depth to it, it made me cry.

The last time someone close to Atreus died, it was his mother. And what does Kratos do? He takes him out hunting. It’s a distraction, which Kratos rightfully calls out in Ragnarök. But at the time of Faye’s passing, it was Kratos looking for that distraction. Atreus is just along for the ride, absorbing it all and it becomes all he knows about grieving.

Not only is it all that Atreus really knows, but it’s all he can think of in Ragnarök because the poor boy hasn’t been shown how to properly grieve. It takes Kratos years to finally learn to open up to his emotions, and he spends a few of said years showing Atreus how to bottle them up, either outright or by his own actions. It’s not until the end that Kratos says “no, feel it”

Atreus hunting deer after losing Brok is the only coping mechanism he has. He doesn’t know what else to do, and he’s floundering. He’s trying so hard to hold it together, but his emotions are raw and his voice trembles despite him trying desperately to keep it together. Up until that point, he was playing the line between Fate and Change. It wasn’t until then that the chance of losing everyone he held dear became real.

He wasn’t hunting in the direction of deer. He was hunting for stability.
