GOING TO NEW DEPTHS WITH HARRY STYLES - A Case study of ‘Falling’ by Audouy.com
Intro
The concept was to shoot Harry performing at a grand piano in an elegant but decaying Parisian interior. The piano would gradually fill with water that ultimately overflows into the ornate room, gradually filling the space completely with water until Harry and his piano are completely submerged.
An efficient 15’ x 16’ set was built using water-safe materials by Vision Scenery and then fastened to rock-and-roll truss. The entire volume was lowered on camera by a 180-ton crane, which simulated the effect of the rising water by fixing the camera to the set while the set descended into a water tank. To make things more complicated, the video would be shot practically, with no stunt performers and over the course of only 12 hours.

Designing a Set to go Underwater
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piano Rigging at Full Scale: SPECIAL EFFECTS
Local special effects company Full Scale Effects was charged with the task of rigging the piano. Due to the extremely tight prep schedules common to music videos, there was just enough time to install the plumbing into the piano so that water could be pumped into its body, but no time to test.
The team, headed by SPFX Supervisor Dave Peterson, worked up until an hour past call-time to continue to rig the piano so that it would not only hold water, but also leak properly and at the requested speed. The SPFX team of four completely disassembled the 100-year-old piano, including removing the entire brass soundboard, so that a Visqueen lining could be fastened into the interior.
Tumblr media
There must have been three-dozen nuts and bolts holding the musical instrument together—all just about impossible to get to. After the Visqueen was installed, and the piano reassembled, the unit collected water that then “waterfalled” off the sides and out of the keys as Harry played. The effect was beautiful, and entirely achieved as an in-camera effect.
The 100-Year-Old Piano: SPECIALTY PROP
Tumblr media
Set Decorator Neil Wyzanowski purchased all the dressing including a blue Murano glass chandelier and a Venetian-style mirror, and also printed rennaissance-era paintings. The piano turned out to have been once owned by Hollywood Golden-age actress and singer Deanna Durbin, who passed away in 2013 at age 91.
In order to create a character for the piano that echoed Harry’s own personality, inspiration was found in Harry’s own tattoos.
Fun, vintage engravings were sourced that were inspired by pirate tattoos: a whale, a harp, a clipper ship, a rose, and even a rooster.
Tumblr media
These, along with classical ornament, were hand-painted onto the piano and bench in metallic gold paint by local artist Jayne Morgan, and then sealed with a heavy clear coat. After hours of being submurged underwater, the piano started to deteriate beautifully on camera, with black keys falling away like broken teeth, and the white film covering the white keys peeling up like dead skin.
Tumblr media
The “Falls Lake” Tank: LOCATION
The music video was shot at the massive “Falls Lake” tank at Universal Studios, as it was the only water tank in Los Angeles with adequate specifications. The center “pit” of the tank was filled with 500,000 gallons of water, which was filtered to be optically clear and also heated (to keep Harry comfortable during our winter night shoot).
A team of safety divers not only ensured Harry’s safety, but also helped reset the set dressing between takes.

Brasilia, Brazil
Few people have anything good to say about Brasilia, the country’s capital. Built from nothing only sixty years ago, it is now the third biggest city in the country, yet it draws few tourists. Even many “residents” leave on the weekends-- they are only here for work during the week and return to their home towns whenever they can. But from an architecture and urban design standpoint it is one of the most distinctive, unusual cities in the world, and that’s why I wanted to see it.
A quick history... For most of Brazil’s colonial history, cities along the coast competed to be power centers. Many agreed that the capital should be moved to a neutral location in the central interior, and the new republic’s Constitution of 1888 even called for it. But it wasn’t until after WWII that a president, Juscelino Kubitschek, put a plan into action. He assembled a team of designers and architects-- most notably Oscar Niemeyer-- to design the new city. In 1960 (59 years ago this week), Brasilia was inaugurated, and the capital officially moved from Rio. Niemeyer (who had strong communist leanings) wanted it to be the city of the future, where rich and poor would live and work side-by-side. His distinctive Modernist buildings still define the cityscape and were the main draw for me.
The main city of Brasilia is shaped like an airplane (it’s surrounded by 25 satellite towns too). The cockpit, fuselage and tail (the “Eixo Monumental”) contain most of the government buildings, museums and other attractions. The wings are divided into a grid and areas are named after what they contain, such as shopping, hospitals, sports clubs, etc. (Yes this is very strange as you would think it would behoove everyone to have these things spread around.) Beneath the wings is a large (manmade) lagoon. In many ways it’s a brilliant design (not unlike Burning Man) but it’s executed very poorly.
Tumblr media
I arrived Monday afternoon to a relatively cushy AirBnB in the Hotel Saint Moritz in the “Northern Hotel Sector” (at the top of the fuselage). I needed some food, and the only real option was a giant mall (Conjunto Nacional) across the street. Brazilians love malls, and that’s especially true in Brasilia since there is effectively no street life (more on that soon). This mall was massive and yet there were no maps or directories. I really couldn’t fathom how that works tho I tried to as I wondered for half an hour to find the food court. That night I decided to take it easy, but I did enjoy the rooftop view of the axis.
On Tuesday morning I stepped out to begin my walking tour, which, if you’ve been to Brasilia, you probably find laughable. First, the distances are much bigger than they seem on a map, mostly because there is so much dead space to cross (lawns, parking lots, empty lots, grassy knolls, etc.). Two, Brasilia is famously made for cars, so there are few sidewalks or crosswalks. This means forging trails where you can (including on medians), waiting for a break in speeding traffic on four-to-six lane roads so you can run across, teetering on narrow curbs, walking in the street alongside parked cars, etc. It is extremely unpleasant, sometimes terrifying and often inefficient. It’s also surreal as when sidewalks or staircases (some of the few concessions made to pedestrians) just end abruptly at a busy road; the city planners know people will walk across that road but have done nothing to aid them. I know that in some places (like parts of southern California), the lack of sidewalks reflects that fact that nobody walks anywhere. But lots of people walk here. The problem is that they’re poor. The middle and upper classes drive cars, and city government doesn’t care about poor pedestrians. I suppose that Niemeyer thought everyone would drive in the future, and that’s why he designed such a sprawled city that can really only be traversed by car. But the result is a betrayal of his egalitarian principles (not to mention an environmental catastrophe).
Nonetheless I was determined to walk. Google Maps’ walking directions pointed me to... the mall. Yes Brasilia lacks sidewalks but you can take malls to get from points A to B. (Once again I got lost in the mall, so it took about 15 minutes to find B.) On the opposite side of the mall from my hotel sits a small plaza (hilariously named Praca dos Pedestres or “Pedestrian Plaza”) with a view overlooking the Eixo. It’s similar to The Mall in Washington, D.C., but it is not inspiring. You can see some of the stranger Niemeyer buildings along the axis and the Congresso Nacional at the end, but it’s mostly a large empty patch of grass that seems unfinished. My first stop was the Teatro Nacional, a sort of pyramid without a top that would make an awesome waterslide. Then I visited the Biblioteca Nacional, a fairly new (and incomplete?) building. It kind of resembles a hi-fi stereo from the 70s and looks great from afar. But up close it’s a terribly wasted opportunity. The ground floor of the building is encased in opaque glass windows so that it’s impossible to see inside-- or even get inside. I walked around the entire building before I found the drab entrance. Of all types of buildings, libraries should be accessible, open and functional, but it seems Niemeyer preferred grandiosity for one of his final designs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I continued on to the Museu Nacional and the Catedral Metropolitana, two of the city’s strangest, most recognizable buildings. They are both quite compelling in person, tho not well kept up and smaller than I imagined (or perhaps they’re dwarfed by all the empty space around them). The museum is a white dome with a Saturn-like ring around it and a large ramp leading to the entrance. It hosts rotating exhibits, but I was mostly interested in the building. The cathedral resembles a wheat bushel with leaning columns coming together in a peak at the top, separated by giant stained glass windows. The effect on the interior is unique and breathtaking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then walked to the “Banking Sector” which has more to offer than you might expect. Brazil’s banks-- and especially the central bank-- often offer cultural centers and exhibitions centers, which at the very least can provide a good opportunity to glimpse inside some beautiful buildings. Case in point, the Caixa Cultural, a large bank whose lobby is filled with stunning stained glass windows, one for each of Brazil’s states. Across the street is the headquarters of the Banco Central do Brasil, a deceptively light looking skyscraper, that is home to a “money museum” featuring currency from around the world (unfortunately I could not go in without my passport).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cursing the traffic and city planners, I continued my walk, now scrambling south from the axis. My destination was Santuario Dom Bosco, a beautiful modernist church famous for its chandelier and illuminated Murano glass meant to resemble a starry night sky. It was also a nice place to sit for a minute and let my frustrations with the city subside. But that didn’t last long. I ventured back out and over to TV Tower, a broadcast tower that is one of the country’s tallest structures and offers sweeping city views. Supposedly. After a hot, lengthy walk dodging cars I arrived only to discover it was closed for construction. At this point I decided to treat myself to an Uber to get home, tho not before one last stop at... the mall. And yet again I got lost, this time in search of a grocery store which it turns out the mall doesn’t have-- apparently I should have gone to the grocery store sector. That evening I decided not to venture far from my hotel, which fortunately sits on a small plaza with a pizzeria, beer bar and convenience store.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Wednesday I set out (in an Uber this time) to finish my tour of the Eixo. I headed to Praca dos Tres Podres, the hub of the federal government. Sites include the Supremo Tribunal Federal (relatively dowdy); Palacio do Planalto (the Executive building which looks similar but its elevation on stilts makes it much more remarkable); Panteao da Patria e da Liberdade (a collection of striking geometric forms, including small dove-shaped performance space with a beautiful stain-glassed window, a stairway to an eternal flame and Brazil’s largest national flag); Espaco Cultural Lucio Costa (an underground lair honoring the city’s main urban planner which includes a giant scale model of the city); Museu Historico de Brasilia (a small, elevated marble block whose interior walls are engraved with the story of the city and several inspiring quotes about it, and whose exterior features a massive statute of Kubitschek’s head); and several art pieces. Up the hill are two beautiful buildings that house the Foreign and Justice ministries: Palacio do Itamaraty and Palacio da Justica. The former appears to sit in a lake that reflects the buildings columns and arches, while the latter’s exterior contains several cascading water falls. (Side question: if Brazil has not had a monarch since 1888 and Brasilia was built in the 1950s by a leftist government, why are all the buildings called palaces?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The centerpiece of all this is the Congresso Nacional, an eye-catching masterpiece rich in symbolism. Two tall, narrow towers intersect a low flat building with two roof adornments, a dome and a bowl. The dome (symbolizing inclusivity) tops the House chamber while the bowl tops the Senate. These are lined up neatly with the towers so that they balance each other out, tall and short, wide and narrow, heavy and light, square and circle. It’s really a perfect structure that I could not take my eyes off of as I walked around it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once I had soaked in as much as I could, I took a car down to the “Sporting Clubs Sector” to the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, another bank-run exhibition space. This one is dedicated to contemporary art, and the current exhibition was on photorealism and hyper-realism, where artists use photographs to create amazingly realistic paintings that are able to convey qualities that the photography does not, such as depth, light, texture and social themes. The technical mastery behind these works was mind-blowing, and it yielded interesting insights into how different media and technology help each other to progress.
I then headed further south to Pontao do Lago Sul, a waterfront area with restaurants, performance space and meandering paths. It feels very new and contrived (like the whole city I guess) but it’s still a nice place to enjoy the light of the sunset. On my way home I stopped back at Praca dos Tres Podres to see it lit up at night, and I’m very glad I did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was not much left to see on my last day so I spent most of the time relaxing and catching up on this blog. I stepped out for a moment to see JK Memorial, Kubitschek’s museum and mausoleum (in the cockpit). It’s a modest, tasteful building full of the president’s belongings (documents, medals, clothes, pens, 1974 Ford Galaxie, etc.). The displays were in English which is always nice, but I do not have a strong interest in Kubitschek so I breezed through quickly. I did enjoy the recreation of his library (with 3,000 books) and the many historical photographs, particularly those showing the building of Brasilia. I noted how much empty space lay between buildings during the construction. This is to be expected but one would also expect that space to be filled in over the next sixty years....
Tumblr media
Brasilia is a city most people don’t want to spend much time in or think much about it. But it’s actually a fascinating place that made me consider the value of architecture and urban design. I loved the notable buildings here much more than I expected to. Concrete Modernism does not sound aesthetically pleasing, and I thought the city would look more kitschy, like Epcot Center. But these thoughtfully rendered buildings really opened my eyes to how beautiful modernism can be and how well it can age. Just as important, the city founders (especially Niemeyer) did not try to emulate existing world capitals like London or Rome. They created entirely new buildings that were-- and still are-- distinctively Brazilian. If a country’s capital should showcase its own aesthetic, Brasilia has succeeded.
And yet in almost every other way it is a failure because of-- not despite-- its (over) design. Contrast it with Sao Paulo, a city that has grown up entirely organically. Yes it’s a mess but it’s a much more exciting, livable, human city. Brazil’s cities have incredible street life but that’s pre-empted in Brasilia. This city offers a lesson that cities grow from the bottom up and cannot be handed down from above. Clearly the designers had an idea about how a city should work, but they completely ignored how they actually work. Good urban planners will take note of existing human behavior and patterns and accommodate them (for example, building parking lots) while encouraging better civic mindedness (like building bike lanes). It’s also foolish to design a city around a technology that’s only 50 years old (driving) while ignoring what humans have been doing for tens of thousands of years (walking). Like so much of Robert Moses’ concurrent work in New York City, this urban design sacrificed the city’s residents to the greater concept of the city.
It’s probably too late to fix Brasilia and all its wasted space (and there does not seem to be much will to), but some elements could be corrected, starting with the city’s ambivalence-- even hostility-- toward tourism. Despite its short history, Brasilia is a unique, important city with many attractions in relatively close proximity. It would appeal to a lot of people, especially architecture enthusiasts and Brazilians interested in their own government. And the people are much friendlier than in Rio (perhaps because in Brasilia people are grateful to have visitors whereas in Rio they are taken for granted). But the city does nothing to encourage tourism. There are no good options for getting around, and all of the government buildings are either closed to the public (a terrible look for a democracy) or are only open in small windows or under specific conditions. From an outsider’s perspective it seems they don’t actually want tourists here. Everyone I met first asked me if I was here for work, then if I lived here. They were all surprised to learn I was just on holiday.
I think it would be fairly easy and inexpensive to turn the Eixo into a proper tourist destination. Put in sidewalks, crosswalks and stop lights. Fill in the empty spaces with trees, fountains, playgrounds, pathways, reflecting pools, etc. Over time add more buildings like museums, hotels (outside of the hotel sectors!?) and restaurants (currently there are zero). It’s practically a blank slate surrounded by some incredible buildings housing the seat of the federal government of one of the world’s biggest countries. Visiting Brasilia could be a treat, not the chore most treat it as. I wonder if there is resistance to changing the city so as not to dishonor the original vision (Niemeyer was still called upon to build the major new buildings up until his death in 2012). If the city wants to fulfill its ambition to be a city of the future, it needs to adapt and modernize. If it does not, its problems will only multiply, and it will stagnate and decay and will remain a city stuck in the past. I think a photo from my hotel roof taken on my last night illustrates Brasilia’s potential and its (so far) disappointing failure to live up to it....
Tumblr media
It ended on a good note tho. Taking off from the airport I was just able to make out the airplane shape from my window seat, and that made it feel like my trip was complete.

The World’s Largest—and America's Priciest—Home Is Ready for Its Close-up
Behold The One—a record-breaking Los Angeles estate with 105,000 square feet of living space and, it seems, a nearly $350 million price tag
By Karine Monié, Photography by Douglas Friedman, via Architectural Digest
Tumblr media
After nearly a decade of design and development work, what is being billed as “the world’s most expensive home” is finally ready for its close-up. Set on a five-acre parcel in the posh Los Angeles enclave of Bel Air—and aptly named The One—the 105,000-square-foot property’s interiors have remained a closely guarded secret. Until now. AD has been an exclusive look at what’s inside this record-setting property—and the design and aesthetic minds that made it happen.
Tumblr media
The home’s guesthouse includes an Oto Murano chandelier by Vistosi along with parquet flooring.
Surrounded on three sides by a moat and a 400-foot-long jogging track, the estate appears to float above the city. Completed over eight years—and requiring 600 workers to build—the home was designed by architect Paul McClean and interior designer Kathryn Rotondi, who were enlisted by owner and developer Nile Niami to help it live up to its reported $340 million price tag.
“This project felt exciting and simultaneously intimidating,” says McClean. But the home’s impressive site and his long-standing relationship with Niami persuaded McClean to not just take on the project but “create something unique and spectacular.”
And McClean certainly has delivered.
Tumblr media
A rotating white sculpture titled Unity by Mike Fields anchors the home’s foyer, which also features a custom white glass Murano chandelier.
With its 26-foot-high ceilings, the home’s main entrance leads to an array of gathering areas with panoramic 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean, downtown Los Angeles, and the San Gabriel Mountains. The entry area is filled with water, along with a sculpture and bridge. “Water is something we often use in our design process because it allows for a sensory change that helps you adjust to your surroundings,” says McClean.
The use of black, white, and gray throughout the home was based on Niami’s desire to have a neutral palette that would allow the landscape and panoramas to shine.
Drawing inspiration from the surrounding environment and history of Los Angeles modernism, McClean has connected the home’s inside with outside “to provide that quintessential L.A. living but on a bigger scale,” he describes. “To allow the home to feel livable, we separated the entertainment spaces from the living areas. [The former] are located at the lower level [and] this creates a plinth for the rest of the house to sit on and reduces [its] apparent mass.”
Beyond the eye-catching design are the home’s equally jaw-dropping stats. There are 42 bathrooms, 21 bedrooms, a 5,500-square-foot master suite, a 30-car garage gallery with two car-display turntables, a four-lane bowling alley, a spa level, a 30-seat movie theater, a “philanthropy wing (with a capacity of 200) for charity galas with floating pods overlooking Los Angeles, a 10,000-square-foot sky deck, and five swimming pools.
Along with Niami, Rotondi, founder of KFR Design, worked on the interior design to shape distinctive spaces that flow into one another despite the grandness of the house. “I was really drawn to ‘wow factor’ elements in the hospitality sector” for inspiration, says Rotondi, who looked to top luxury hotel brands such as Aman, Bulgari and Baccarat. Meanwhile, the home’s color palette, soft textures, and lighting are an ode to the Tom Ford boutique on Rodeo Drive, a favorite of Niami and McClean.
Tumblr media
Thanks to a collaboration between Creative Art Partners and Art Angels, the property features an impressive collection of art, including a butterfly installation by Stephen Wilson on the lower level and a Niclas Castello custom panel in black and silver in the office. There is also a sizable collection of bespoke furniture pieces from byShowroom.
Due to recently approved city ordinances, a house of this magnitude will never again be built in Los Angeles, which means The One will truly remain one of a kind. “This project has been such a long and educational journey for us all,” McClean notes. “It was approached with excitement and was thrilling to create, but I don’t think any of us realized just how much effort and time it would take to complete the project.”
Now it’s time to find the perfect buyer for it. Branden and Rayni Williams of The Beverly Hills Estates, along with Compass’s Aaron Kirman, will have the listing.

Malmsbury House is a Mexican Swiss Chalet project designed by Perversi-Brooks Architects in 2015, covers an area of 206 m2 and is located in Malmsbury , Australia. Photography by Ben Hosking.
“A Mexican-Swiss Chalet in the Aussie Bush (The owner’s brief) Wow! But shit…what to do…? The client; a Swiss (French-speaking) ex-chef, ex-toy museum owner, collector of all things amazing and bizarre, turned artist, now heavily inspired by Mexican colour, pattern and imagery.
The existing house was a dark, somewhat drab mud-brick owner-built number from the late 1970s, chock-a-block full of an extensive collection of objects, toys, and artworks. The house sits in an established garden just outside the township of Malmsbury.
The site is zoned a ‘Rural Living Zone’, and is subject to a number of overlays: Environmental Significance Overlay, Erosion Management Overlay, and a Heritage Overlay. The property is also within a bushfire prone area.
The owner and his partner found the whole place too dark, they needed more light to be happy in the space. They also wanted more wall space and display cabinets for his collection. A small (10m2) glazed sunroom extension was added to provide a space to sit and read, or eat breakfast – inside the comfort of the home – but nestled within the well-established landscaped area to the north of the existing house, providing a space for the owner to appreciate the garden in the warmth of the sun.
The sunroom extension was designed to draw more light deeper into the living areas, but also to visually extend the living space of the house out into the landscape. A brick floor within the sunroom internally folds up into a seated plinth edge which slips through full height glazing to become a strong geometric plinth in the garden.
The idea over time is to have pots and plants strewn across this geometric form, creating a ‘fuzzy’ edge between the building and the landscape. The interior of the house was gutted of the kitchen, bathroom and the two stairs.
The shell of the existing structure (mud brick, traditional brick, timber and other linings) were all painted white to lighten and brighten the whole volume of space. Within this volume were introduced a new Kitchen with timber veneer fronts, overhead cupboards, and stainless steel bench tops, robust enough to deal with the punishment of an ex-chef.
A black steel Spiral stair replaced the two existing timber stairs which ate up valuable floor and wall space. A bridge was also introduced to link the two lofts which were left ‘as-is’ other than a lick of paint and new carpet.
In the lounge area, a large monolithic joinery unit was placed behind the existing fireplace, where one of the stairs once stood, this doubles as a Robe into the second Bedroom, and also holds the TV, stereo, books, and wood storage to the living room side. The joinery acts as a sort of ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ displaying some of the owners most prized pieces; A 17th century doll, a number of candelabras, a clock, an underwater diver, and a number of toy cars.
An elaborate antique Murano glass chandelier was suspended over the existing large timber dining table, and another display cabinet adjoins the dining area in the space of the second original stair. A third display cabinet was inserted in the place of an old external door, visually opening out the end of the corridor, and displaying more objects from both within and outside the home.
The Bathroom was rejuvenated with crisp white tiles, a heated towel rail, and high-end fixtures and fittings. A custom-designed mosaic fills one wall, incorporating Mexican-like colours in the figure of a large pixelated octopus – a celebratory moment of the owner’s previous passion as a seafood chef.
The ‘underwater’ theme is furthered through three glass pendant lights that cluster in the corner looking vaguely ‘octopussy’… “Sam didn’t blink an eye when our brief was, ‘We want a Mexican/Swiss Chalet in the Aussie Bush’. What’s more, he achieved this outcome.” Jean-Jacques Lale-Demoz & Pauline Healy – Malmsbury House”

When we last checked in with Ross Gardam, he was shortlisted for The Design Files 2019 Design Awards with his STUNNING Hemera Desk Lamp and Nebulae Chandelier Collection. Since then, his practice has grown and moved quite a lot, focusing on breaking into the American market, and releasing a raft of new products.
One of those is the Ceto collection, a product that has taken over a year to develop. Inspired by Venetian glassblowing artisans, Ross and his team designed a glass light shade following the same Murano steps, which requires glass be blown into a preliminary mould (named an ‘optic’) before the secondary cast, which gives the fitting its final shape. ‘We wanted to use that traditional technique in a more abstract way,’ explains Ross, describing the unique shadow the double mould method imprints on the final pieces. ‘Each pattern has its own distinct personality.’
Despite its universality in function, each piece of handblown glass contains subtle variations to its surface and form. And there are a lot of them, as the sculptural shade is available as a chandelier, floor lamp, wall light and pendant!
‘We wanted to create something that was truly universal  – a wall light, a floor light, a pendant, a chandelier, we didn’t have anything in our range that spanned across the decorative categories.’
It’s the most versatile collection the Melbourne studio has produced to date, and we love it!

Chandeliers
Tumblr media
Illumination is the best way to see through your life happenings. What can be more enthusiastic than just looking at dim light with lots of hope? Chandelier and pendant lights are the basic jhoomar lights we generally use to decorate our homes or a festive occasion. Chandeliers are very antique and traditional furniture which are a symbol of royalty. Palace and Mansion generally use chandeliers to decorate their interiors which shows their royal nature. Nowadays chandeliers don’t only signify aristocratic and noble nature but also the simple basic outburst which every household possesses.  A chandelier can give a home décor both the emotions and style, the basic and simple threshold outburst of a domestic home and also determines the royalty of aristocrat families.
What is Chandeliers?
A chandelier at its very nature is a light fixture hanging from the ceiling. While most often used in the dining room, candlesticks can be used in any space such as the living room, office, and patio to make a display. Chandeliers feature multiple lamps and are used for ambient lighting, often on multiple levels.   A similar lighting style, the pendant light, may be confused with a candlestick. A pendant generally consists of only one shade / light source hanging from a single wire/suspension system, whereas a chandelier has several shades / light sources, often linked by a branched network. But even with this distinction, when you consider larger pendants, the distinction between pendants and candlesticks seems to be very fluid. For most, even if technically it might be a pendant light, a larger hanging light fixture is more broadly understood as a chandelier. Although the picture of a conventional chandelier is often very specific–a suspended light fixture with multiple arms and candelabras with beads and crystals dangling underneath–modern and contemporary (by definition) chandelier design rethinks the traditional concept of chandeliers in new and innovative ways. Choosing the right lens is to choose the right type of lens for your specific purpose of lighting. Is the chandelier's style or design your reason? Will the chandelier allow for the kind of lighting? Or is it the end perhaps? Here you can see the distinction between the different candlestick types The discovery of a style you love for your home is one of the most exciting aspects of being on the market for a chandelier. Consider the following types of candlesticks to fit the design of your home and which one might fit the best in your home. Old and mid-century old candlesticks are distinctive for both the period from which their design emerged and their focus on creating aesthetically pleasing and practical furniture.
Different types of chandelier
Tumblr media
Infographics Source: Custom Lighting Sky bang chandelier Inspired by the complex ways of fireworks bursting and reminiscent of abstract trees, the Bang Series rides the line between timeless minimalism and imaginative whimsy. The Sky Bang LED Chandelier consists of a "knuckle" part of central metal which holds six bulbs of different lengths.  A clamping mechanism allows the LED lamps to be leveled, which can be oriented to provide ambient, reflective uplight, or more direct downlight oriented task.  The Bang series follows the balance between timeless minimalism and quirky whimsy design. The material part is available in finishes of stainless, black steel, matte black, slate gray, polished nickel and brushed brass. Diffusers made from polycarbonate, Incorporate a 72" field adjustable stem. The contemporary design breaks away from other types to create cutting-edge chandeliers demonstrating how to re-imagine chandelier fashion for everyday use. Ingo Maurer’s Zettel’z Ingo Maurer's Zettel's 5 Chandelier is a surprisingly beautiful chandelier that suppresses Bohemian crystal drops, then chosen stainless steel clips that carry scribbled notes on Japanese paper — presumably from an incurable romantic's writing desk.  Light penetrates the handheld paper in a satin finish using a central heat-resistant glass diffuser.  The artist experiments with traditional approaches to the manufacture of chandeliers in this work, using precious and semi-precious materials — but is there anything as precious as a heart laid bare? Hinkley Lighting's rustic Sawyer Outdoor Chandelier Hinkley Lighting's rustic Sawyer Outdoor Chandelier creates a warm, welcoming ambiance for outdoor spaces such as porches and indoor areas such as living rooms.  The circular chandelier is made of metal with a faux wood finish of Sequoia and uses candelabra bulbs enclosed in 6 shades of Clear Seedy.  The candlestick is made with Hinkley's anti-corrosion paint. This piece has traditional inspiration and complements a variety of design styles. Hinkley Lighting began in Cleveland, Ohio as a small family business and has grown into one of the most respected lighting producers in the world. Movimento Rectangular Chandelier The Movimento Rectangular Chandelier features hand-cut art glass panels, which are delicately hung on stainless steel braided lines. The spinning glass effect gives Movimento a certainly whimsical look, suitable for contemporary foyers, kitchens, living rooms, and bedrooms.  The light source can be mounted in the fixture canopy or built into the glass that is hanging. Movimento comes with an optional cold rolled steel box, available in painted or brushed nickel metal finishes. It provides decorative and ambient illumination. Ridgely Studio Works, a Toronto based lighting firm, was founded in 2000 by Zac Ridgely out of a passion for art and lighting.  Their designs are imaginative and sculptural, embodying unique and innovative aspects of architecture.  Their lights are sleek, practical and imaginative with offerings such as the stunning, shimmering Halo Criss Cross LED chandelier and the abstract, customizable Wall Sconce Bar. Pili Pendant light Arturo Alvarez's Pili Pendant Light is a plain colored stainless steel thread that is whimsically interwoven to create a surreal sphere.  This charming pendant light can be used on its own, or hung for a stunning visual display in multiple compositions. Diffused lighting flees through the woven thread, adding a warm glow to the modern living rooms, dining rooms or bedrooms. Sputnik Chandelier The Sputnik Chandelier by Robert Abbey is a cosmic work of art with modern features, similar to a satellite or a stellar explosion.  The Sputnik has crystal-like highlights and has extension rods and direct wire to suit both large and small interior areas for varying heights.  The crystal accents spread the light so that there is ample light, which does not damage the eyes. Cage Pendant light Light by Lights up Color Swag Dome Cage has a simple but chic design that adds flair to any living room.  An open shade that houses bulbs that emit warm and incandescent light is the most striking feature of the pendant lamp. An on-line power switch is available for easy installation. Mini Crescent LED Chandelier A popular design and miniaturizes the Mini Crescent LED Multi-Light Pending Light from Lee Broom.  It has a collection of hanging spheres bisected between the two hems, exhibiting stunning brushed aluminum. Each shadow of the half-sphere is made of acrylic opaque to absorb the light and give the appearance a pleasing glow.  Even though two halves of each sphere are compensated for each other, the product retains an attractive balance. In 2007 Lee Broom discovered his love for lighting and furniture design, which was influenced by the dramatic nature of his theater heritage. Beaded Chandelier Foscarini's Caboche Chandelier is the result of a desire to create lightweight fittings that mimic a pearl bracelet. It was designed by Patricia Urquiola and Eliana Gerotto, who tried to transform light into a sphere of transfusion.  This company blends imagination and science, which provides a collage of reflections and refractions and is an emblem for the field of illumination. Light diffuses through the glass-like balls to shade the surrounding area and provide clear lighting under it. Since its inception in Murano in 1981, the Italian brand has been active in the field of glass-blown lighting. The Foscarini brand is founded on passion, creativity, and technical innovation. Foscarini expanded its modern design to use a wide variety of materials to design contemporary interior and exterior lighting from its traditional beginnings. Meurice Chandelier The triangular candlestick of Robert Abbey's Meurice takes its unique look at the victorian Regency lamps.  Maurice Chandelier is a large rectangular chandelier designed by Jonathan Adler to the like of any fan of good design. This chandelier is introduced by Robert Abbey.  There are 21 vertical metal rods on the Meurice Chandelier that carry an amphora on each tip to create a 42 light brace. Although the centerpiece of the range is the Meurice Chandelier, the entire collection is based on a motif of bamboo shoot-styling metal bars, as seen with the Meurice Chandelier. If you build a chandelier as big as the Meurice Chandelier, any room you want will be able to add a powerful statement.  The luminous rods measure 17 "each while the whole chandelier length is 38" long and 14 "high. The height can be changed to between 25.25 and 55.25 inches with 6 X 12 inch and 3 X 6 inch threaded internally, to allow the Meurice Chandelier to be suspended even with a high ceiling to provide an outstanding atmospheric example. Robert Abbey has been producing quality lighting since 1948, based in North Carolina. The company's creations are family-owned and operated and are modern and deliver futuristic trends. Agnes Chandelier The Agnes Chandelier–14 Light, by Roll & Hill, is a rustic piece that uses the long-branched pieces of aluminum to put together sharp glass shards inspired by Agnes ' fictional character, which worked in 1849 during California's Gold Rush.  The chandelier blends lovely metal finishes with different glass shapes that offer a uniform look. Glass shades create subtle ambiance lighting, suitable for dining and living rooms, to recall the candles hanging around Agnes ' bedroom. Roll & Hill was founded in 2010 to develop innovative, contemporary lighting with its headquarters in Brooklyn, New York. Roll & Hill offers a range of product types, from LED desk lamps to models candlesticks, from innovative research by individual designers.  Their set is composed of rich materials and is constructed manually, drawing on geometric forms and a range of historical influences. Gold Chandelier A modern interpretation of a traditional candlelit is Nemo's Crown Major suspension.  The chandelier is powered by frost glass diffusers and is available in a variety of finishes. The set of 30 opal white glass shades offers indirect ambient lighting.  The lighting design of Crown is a remarkable production of this piece.  Every branch of the lamp's core starts with a sporadically around the center of the lampstand tripod extension that produces full ambient light.  Also, the central suspension of the Crown can be installed in the dining room, bedroom or living room for the duration of your choosing. Chrome Chandelier The chrome or gold satin brass Conant 4 light candlestick provides ample illumination to your everyday needs while adding a layer of today's elegance to the decor of your home.  Feiss' hybrid candlestick is highly structured and endlessly accommodating, and these transparent lanterns are fine-tuned in their decorative lines with a modern golded brass finish or a vivid Chromium finish.  Complex square details on the base of each floating candle tube demonstrate how artistically and skillfully these glorious lighting fixtures are made. The open frames (no glass panels) give a fresh, updated look to the lantern silhouettes and look like a cozy sun, a diner or a bedroom over the island. Feiss started to sell porcelain lamps topped with his mother's hand-sewn shades after Murray Feiss came home after fighting in the Navy during the Second World War.  The true descriptions of their products and energy-saving innovations today are based on the slogan of "past story and future commitment."  The innovative and stylish Feiss products are built on the highest standards for materials and manufacturing from bronzed outdoor lighting to façade-facing crystal chandeliers. What things we should keep in mind before buying a chandelier?
Positioning a chandelier The candlestick should be placed as centrally as possible in an interior space. Three reasons: Esthetic: from all angles, a well-built lighter is admirable. Having the lens in a central position helps you to see all the amazing components in a 360-degree manner. General Light: artificial ambient light from a concentrated location is more evenly distributed. Symmetry: The chandelier is best placed in a central position for visual symmetry since it is most definitely the only suspended object. Installation Height The roughly 30-inch lampstand will hang in a dining room so that the visitors seated around it can see one another and don't get any sparkling eyes. For each extra foot of ceiling height, add around 3 inches if you have a high ceiling (9 feet or higher). In other spaces, such a sightline and protected clearance should always be remembered when building a lampstand.  Chandelier Brightness The area square footage defines the perfect amount of lumens for ambient lighting in a dining room or any room.  A dining room takes approximately 300-400 lumens per 100 square feet. (Your selection is dependent on further details on the required lumens for any room.)  So you'd be intelligent to take into consideration a chandelier's lumens production.  A luster may not be the only source of ambient light within a vacuum but is probably the primary one, for the sake of proper light layers.
What can be the benefits of a chandelier?
Beauty No other lights will compare with chandeliers ' charm, even though lights come close.  But while designers typically bring elegance and comfort to a room using the color and tone of lighting, they only work with the lights on. But even lampshades tend to be dark without illumination. Without light. On the other side, candlesticks are art pieces that cater to space and bring charm and sophistication to it, even after it's off. With the help of a beautiful and complex candlestick, the feel of a bland looking room can be changed. It can become the focal point of the room's decor and attracts attention. Saves Space Unlike torches, illumination devices usually take up a great deal of space and interrupt the airflow.  Chandeliers do not, since they are completely out of the way, hung from the ceilings.  Without using the floor or the table you get a sufficient amount of light. Environment Chandeliers build in any room, which traditional ceilings & wall lights can not provide, a warm and welcoming atmosphere.  The crystals and glass in the lamps absorb and refract light, which reflects it in different patterns throughout the house. Such lamps produce a warm light instead of a bright, concentrated light from other lights. No matter what shape and style the chandeliers add a touch of charm to a space that makes it more appealing and inviting.  If you want to minimize the coldness and formality of hard lighting in your office or meeting rooms, all you have to do is install a chandelier. Versatility  The fact that they would work only with a certain style was one of the major problems with conventional chandeliers. After all, in new, commercial apartments and houses, elegant crystal chandeliers won't look good. Luckily, lens manufacturers have trended and new designs and shapes added. These also use various materials such as blown glass and metal with greater flexibility than conventional crystal lamps. From the odd and excentric to the sleek and minimalist, contemporary chandelier styles can be all. Chandeliers come in various types, models, designs, and sizes, as there are other light fixtures. There is no lack of choice available. Save your Drywalls  You need to drill a hole into the wall for wall lights, so you have to complete them again each time you decorate them or want to change things.  This can be challenging, let alone break the walls. But you don't need to think about your drywalls or chandeliers, because they are hanging from the ceiling and don't sit on the walls. Each time you want to alter it, you won't have to fix or refinish it. You don't find it ostentatious or over the top when you choose the right luster, so don't hesitate to install one in your office home. To make it work, you only need to select the right environment for your overall design and architecture.

While in London: My Happenstance Discoveries
Another trip to beautiful London has come and gone. I love this city! I always return with a wealth of inspiration and, invariably, some heavy and indispensable swag items that I usually have to ship home.
Between two international design award ceremonies, sourcing ventures with my colleagues in the field, and two blog award celebrations, this was my fourth consecutive year in London. It’s clear to me that I need a flat here....and a client or two (just putting that out to the universe)!
This year it was a three day whirlwind of a time and the Amara Interior Blog Awards night at London’s Design Museum was the highlight. As a finalist for Best Interior Designer Blog, it was a special evening of celebrating our passion for design and the art of putting it all into words. I connected with old and new friends who share a special understanding of the craft. It was a memorable evening!
Three days is a short visit and therefore I explored freely with no plans or regiment. I always see so much more this way because there is not an ounce of expectation; just random wonders and interesting connections that appear as they should if you believe in kismet. With eyes and heart wide open, each moment is complete and the happenstance discoveries are special.
Tumblr media
This city feeds my creative soul. I love the fashion windows and high tea, the grand Georgian homes of South Kensington, the museums and their fantasy gardens, and my lifelong fetish for vintage markets.
The grounds of the Natural History Museum are simply magical and each year the ice rink revolves around a giant Christmas tree. The wonderland scene, set against the backdrop of Hintze Hall, always stops me in my tracks. I have yet to put on the blades but so far it suffices to watch people on wobbly skates holding on to penguin figures and others that show off their one-foot glides. Truth be known, I haven’t skated since I was a kid.
Tumblr media
Between the buskers, illuminated Merry-Go-Round, and roasted chestnuts, I’m continuously enamored by this along-the-way place. The experience is new and different each time.
No matter how short my London stay is, I do my best to visit my all-time favorite museum, the V&A. I could spend weeks in this glorious place that houses history, architecture, and design. I would never tire. The fantastical Chihuly Rotunda Chandelier is breathtaking each time I see it. It’s a chandelier-formed sculpture of colorful blown glass that draws on the historic Viennese techniques of the Murano glassworks. Its delicate swirling tendrils perform together to bring a sense of movement through color, shade, and light. This is a space changer and an art form that one can dream around!
Tumblr media
A visit to the V&A is not complete without a bit of Victorian-high-style indulgence in the museum’s cafes. Being the first of their kind in a museum, three refreshment rooms - The Gamble, Poynter, and Morris Room - were opened in 1868 for visitors to immerse themselves in culture and beauty. Reflecting the once contemporary design theories of the day, each room offers a wealth of decorative ornamentation and inspiration. My personal favorite is the central Gamble Room. In opulent Italianate style, this room is extraordinary! Every surface is embellished and nothing is restrained.
Tumblr media
Walls, ceilings and large columns supporting grand arches are wrapped in colorful ceramic, glass, and enamel. A frieze of putti harvesting food, grand mirrors in majolica frames, carved scenes with elephants and camels surrounding doors and stained-glass windows that disperse light into beautiful colorful fragments are the details that can keep one captivated. Today’s large filigree spheres that replaced the original gas jets are strangely in keeping. I have to admit, I spent a good portion of my precious available day here. But that’s perfectly fine. Time seemed to stand still while slowly sipping Earl Grey and listening to the classics on the piano. I imagined the fancy dresses and showpiece hats that once accompanied this scene.
Each previous year while in London I did some window shopping in the evening and each year I promised myself a return in the day to that wonderful little Fortuny shop, Venetia Studium, in Brompton. The quintessential Venetian lamps of opaline silk and their rich fusion of cultural decoration speak of fairytale places and times. When I walked in by chance, I was thrilled!  I was finally inside the jewel box. The lamps were true sculptures of light. I touched each pleated silk cushion and scarf, and the handbags of silk damask velvet were works of art. I didn’t buy anything but I may just do some online Christmas shopping. The copper and blush damask cushion has my name on it!
Tumblr media
I discovered my new favorite restaurant in London during this last visit. Tucked away on its namesake street, Launceston Place, in South Kensington, is the place to dine! Its deep blue classic facade caught my eye on a particularly sunny afternoon.
Tumblr media
To me, the environment is as much part of the experience than the food and service itself. No disappointments on any level here. French gray walls hold a collection of fine art and I love the bright daylight ambiance that turns intimate in the evening with small quirky lightbulb candles. The creative fare, prepared by acclaimed Head Chef, Ben Murphy was accompanied with the finest choices of wine by Master Sommelier, Piotr Pietras. A special vegan meal was prepared just for us along with a custom menu card. I’m forever spoiled by this experience. Every detail and garnish was an art form. Smoked candy floss was the most unusual dish and it was awesome! Sommelier-approved or not, it paired perfectly with my rose champagne.
Tumblr media
The last full day in London was sunny - again! The red paper lanterns were particularly bright and luminous in Chinatown.
Tumblr media
A small narrow alley led to an open courtyard that was colourful and eclectic. This was Neal’s Yard in Covent Garden. I sat down for a while with coffee in hand and enjoyed some people-watching. Another world this little spot seemed to be - wondrous and imaginative with lush vertical gardens and a rainbow of colour on each facade. I felt as though I’d entered a children’s storybook.
Tumblr media
The angels were suspended between the historic buildings of Regent Street and I imagined them in the month of December when the Christmas spirit would dance through their ethereal wings. For now, they seemed a bit out of place in the warm autumn sun but there was a magic just the same and I could sense the quiet stirrings and preparations for a frenetic season ahead.
Tumblr media
And then there will be next year in London.

Florida Coastal Condo Interior Design
Beautifully designed by the talented interior designer Lisa Michael Interiors, LLC (previously featured here – you need to see it!), this vacation condo located in North Palm Beach features resort-style living with Moroccan flair. Here, the designer shares more insights about this project:
“The water club way project is unique in that it transports the homeowners to the feeling of being in an exotic locale. Through the use of color, texture, materials, and specialty paint applications, the finished look pulls from various design genres that coexist together giving the home an eclectic collected feel. The living areas within the condo were designed to create an experience for the homeowners, each possessing its own unique identity and sense of place. The condo has a tropical and exotic feel, but also an ethnic flair with a contemporary bohemian twist.”
I hope you get inspired and transported to this special place.

With 2,864 SF Lease, Bvlgari Opens its First Store in Boston
BOSTON, MA – Bvlgari, a contemporary Roman high jeweler announces the opening of its first boutique in Boston on Newbury Street.  Following the renovations of the brand’s historic Roman flagship and New York 5th Avenue flagship an architectural concept by Peter Marino is being revealed in key locations across the globe.
Mediterranean and Roman elements imbue the new 2,864 square foot Boston boutique, evoking the spirit of the Eternal City.  The concept features the use of marble and stone found in ancient Roman buildings through a classic yet modern design. Not only does this complement the history and charm of the neighborhood but it also blends tradition with innovation, two characteristics emblematic of both Marino and the brand’s style. Black Grand Antique marble and the White Travertino Navona frame the original storefront portal and two bay windows, which were preserved and restored as a tribute to Boston’s historical architecture.
Bois Jourdan marble on the entrance and star-patterned White Travertino Navona welcomes visitors and encompasses a key design element, the Condotti eight point star, in red porphyry. The signature eight-point star dates back to the first Bulgari shop in Rome opened by Sotirio Bulgari in 1884. The star is a unifying symbol found in all Bulgari boutiques, honoring Rome as the brand’s home.
Tumblr media
On the inside, the flooring features Italian walnut square-patterned parquet with a degrade effect, which evokes an atmosphere flooded by natural sunlight. In the stores center, two oval-shaped counters, inspired by the renowned Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, invite customers to explore the iconic collections, while a Murano crystal chandelier by Italian artisan Vistosi illuminates the boutique. A balance between ancient and new, tradition and innovation, is also expressed through the décor and furniture. The new space houses furniture carefully selected by Peter Marino conceived by Italian designers of the 50’s and 60’s who have a relationship to the Bulgari heritage, such as sales tables by Franco Albini and the marble counters inspired by Carlo Scarpa
Iconic images of celebrities decorate the walls as a tribute to the brand’s long-standing relationship with Hollywood. Further enriching the shopping experience is the VIP area located on the mezzanine, reachable by an open staircase, recalling the ambiance of an Italian theatre.  The room is surrounded by a Pantheon Mesh grid, a bronze-lattice work screen inspired by the Roman Pantheon’s floor with the additional motif of the iconic Bvlgari eight-pointed star.
“This milestone marks a special moment for Bvlgari, as it brings our Maison’s Roman roots and spirit of innovation to Boston, a very important city for the brand,” said Daniel Paltridge, President of North America.  “We are pleased to open our boutique on Newbury Street in a manner that represents the contemporary Bulgari brand while simultaneously paying tribute to our rich, Roman heritage.”
Part of the LVMH Group, Bvlgari was founded in Rome in 1884 as a jewellery shop. Quickly establishing a reputation for Italian excellence, Bulgari enjoys renown for exquisite craftsmanship and magnificent jewellery creations. The Company’s international success has evolved into a global and diversified luxury purveyor of products and services, ranging from fine jewels and watches to accessories and perfumes, and featuring an unrivalled network of boutiques and hotels in the world’s most exclusive shopping areas.

The UNESCO-listed capital of Malta stands proudly on one of Europe's grandest harbors, surrounded by some of the mightiest fortifications in the world.
Explore this fascinating city with our list of the top tourist attractions in Valletta.
1. Saint John's Co-Cathedral
Saint John's Co-Cathedral reflects the wealth and importance of the Knights of Malta, who protected Europe and the Catholic faith from attacks by the Ottoman Turks in the 16th century. The most renowned artwork in the church is The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist by Caravaggio in the Oratory.
The various chapels of Saint John's Co-Cathedral reflect the different "langues" (regions) of the Knights of Malta who hailed from many different countries in Europe. Among the eight chapels are a few must-see highlights: The Chapel of the Langue of Aragon (the region of Catalonia and Navarre in Spain) features Mattia Preti's painting of Saint George on a white stallion after slaying a dragon. The Chapel of the Langue of Italy displays the famous work of Saint-Jerome Writing by Caravaggio. The Grand Master's Palace has many quaint shops, cafés, and restaurants. A great place to stop is the famous establishment Caffe Cordina (244 Republic Street), a fancy café that serves traditional Maltese pastries along with coffee and tea.
Address: Saint John's Street, Valletta
2. Grand Master's Palace
Valletta's most monumental building, the Grand Master's Palace stands in the center of Palace Square, which is often used for traditional ceremonies. Grand Master Fra Pietro del Monte commissioned the palace in the 16th century as a residence for the Knights of Malta. Part of the building is now used as the Presidential Palace, serving as the office for the President of Malta. The rest of the building is open to the public as a museum.
The enormous State Rooms are richly decorated with gilded moldings and works of art, such as a series of murals that illustrates a complete narration of the Great Siege of 1565. The Hall of the Ambassadors, also known as the "Red Room," is adorned with portraits of the Grand Masters, who led the knights to victory. One of the paintings depicts the dignified-looking Grand Master Jean de Vallette, founder of the city of Valletta.
3. Grand Harbor
The entire harbor is surrounded by massive fortifications, bastions, and defensive towers. This formidable setting was the scene of the Great Siege of 1565, the most famous event in Malta's history. Led by Grand Master Jean de Valette, the knights heroically defeated the ruthless Ottoman Turk invaders.
The harbor branches off into smaller creeks (shaped like a multi-pronged fork). In these quiet ports, there are many yacht marinas and boat docks. These ports around the Valletta Grand Harbor provide enough docks for thousands of boats, making it one of the largest marinas in the world.
The entire Grand Harbor area encompasses a semicircle of densely populated little towns, including Kalkara, Vittoriosa, Cospicua, Senglea, Paola, and Marsa. Just across from Valletta, the towns of Vittoriosa, Cospicua, and Senglea, known as the "Three Cities" were the original settlement of the Knights. These towns are filled with historical monuments, such as auberges of the knights, beautiful Baroque churches, and important military forts. The best way for tourists to discover the Grand Harbor is by taking a guided boat tour.
4. National Museum of Archaeology
The National Museum of Archeology is housed in the former Auberge de Provence, the historic residence of the knights originating from the Provence region in France. The building dates to 1571 and is a wonderful example of Baroque architecture. The Grand Salon is especially noteworthy, with its richly painted walls and wood-beamed ceiling. The museum's exceptional archaeology collection tells the story of Malta through a chronological presentation. Exhibits include prehistoric artifacts and architectural elements found at megalithic sites, as well as ancient Roman objects and medieval antiquities. The museum is renowned for its Prehistoric collection, an extensive array of artifacts from the Maltese Islands' megalithic temples. These Neolithic-era archaeological finds include 6,000- to 7,000-year-old pottery, ornaments, altars, limestone statuettes, terra cotta bowls, and cult utensils. One room contains models of the five best-preserved temples. The headless "Fat" statues of the Tarxien Temples are displayed here.
A small room houses the The Sleeping Lady, considered a masterpiece of prehistoric art. This tiny figurine of a woman lying on a couch reveals the expression and emotion of centuries ago.
Address: Auberge de Provence, Republic Street, Valletta
5. Upper Barrakka Gardens and Military Ceremonies
The picturesque Upper Barrakka Gardens encircle part of the city's old fortifications, built on Valletta's highest point. The peaceful and shady gardens are beautifully laid out with fountains, flower beds, rows of archways, and statues of prominent historical figures including Winston Churchill. There are multiple viewpoints from different outlooks around the garden, offering awe-inspiring panoramas of the Grand Harbor. It's possible to see across to the towns of Vittoriosa, Cospicua, and Kalkara.
This space is now used for outdoor weddings and ceremonial events. Every day, a traditional ceremony at noon is performed by members of the Malta Heritage Society dressed in authentic British Artillery uniforms. A tribute to Valletta's military history, this ceremony includes firing the cannons as a salute.
Tips for Tourists: The Upper Barrakka Gardens is in the heart of the city next to Castille Place. To arrive here, go to the Victoria Gate and turn left past the Church of Saint Mary of Jesus onto Saint Ursula Street. The entrance to the Upper Barrakka Gardens is at the end of the street. There is also an elevator at the foot of Saint Barbara Bastion that goes up 60 meters to the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
Address: Saint Ursula Street, Valletta
6. Casa Rocca Piccola: An Aristocratic Maltese Home
The current owners are the 9th Marquis and Marchioness de Piro.
Visitors can take a guided tour to see the palace's elegant interior, including two dining rooms, a bedroom, the salons, and the small family chapel.
The rooms are decorated with antique 16th-century furniture, Murano glass chandeliers imported from Venice, and crystal chandeliers from Bohemia. In the Sala Grande, there is a distinctive portable chapel, a cabinet crafted from black lacquer with an altar inside that was designed for personal devotion.
Within the property is a family-run restaurant, La Giara, which prepares authentic Sicilian cuisine from the palace's old kitchens.
Address: 74 Republic Street, Valletta
7. Manoel Theater: One of the Oldest Theaters in Europe
This magnificent little theater was commissioned in 1731 by António Manoel de Vilhena, Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, to meet the local demand for operas, pageants, and theatrical performances. With this distinguished heritage, the Manoel Theater ranks among the oldest theaters in Europe. The lavishly decorated auditorium features gilded box seats and plush velvet chairs. Every seat in the house offers a good view, and the acoustics of the oval room are excellent.
Visitors may take a self-guided tour with an audio guide. There is also an interesting calendar of theatrical events including music concerts and classic opera. In January, the Manoel Theater hosts a two-week Baroque Festival featuring the music of Vivaldi and Bach.
Address: 115 Old Theater Street, Valletta
8. Collegiate Parish Church of Saint Paul's Shipwreck
An important landmark in Valletta, the domed Church of Saint Paul's Shipwreck is one of the oldest churches in Malta (dating back to the 1570s.) As befits a church dedicated to Malta's patron saint, the interior is sumptuous and houses venerated relics. Pope Pius VII donated the most precious relic, the block upon which Saint Paul was said to have been beheaded, as well as what is believed to be part of his wrist bone.
Visitors should take time to admire the church's ceiling frescoes, which depict Saint Paul's brief sojourn in Malta and were painted at the turn of the century. The main altarpiece displays a painting of Saint Paul and Saint Luke in a scene of the shipwreck. The church's marvelous gilded wooden statue of Saint Paul is paraded through the streets of Valletta on February 10th every year. This date commemorates the day Saint Paul's shipwreck occurred and is celebrated with much festivity.
Address: 74 Saint Paul Street, Valletta
9. National Museum of Fine Arts
The monumental staircase at the entrance makes a grand impression, worthy of Valletta's finest art collection. The museum's collection represents important works of Maltese art from the 12th century to the 20th century, as well as noteworthy pieces by other European artists.
There's an great grouping of works by the popular artist of Malta, Mattia Preti, who was from Calabria in Southern Italy. His most renowned work on display here is the Baptism of Christ painting. The museum also displays a few masterpieces by Italian artist Guido Reni and the exceptional Judith and Holofernes painting by Valentin de Boulogne. Another exquisite painting that stands out in the collection is the early Impressionist View of the Grand Harbor by J.M.W. Turner.
Address: South Street, Valletta
10. Valletta Waterfront
Overlooked by many tourists, the Valletta Waterfront is a popular spot among locals. The row of buildings was commissioned in the 18th century by Grand Master Pinto for the purpose of storing goods such as grain, vegetables, and fish. The warehouse buildings have been beautifully restored, and the pathway has been enlarged. Fringed with shady trees and leafy palms, the spacious waterside promenade is lined with trendy restaurants. This is one of the best places to visit in Valletta for an atmospheric meal by the harbor.
