This is from an ask over a month ago in regards to Part 5 of Jojo, but can you explain why Man in the Mirror and Babyface are "weird disasters?" Babyface I can somewhat understand but I thought Man in the Mirror was really good.
I couldn’t explain everything done wrong about the Man in the Mirror fight without watching it for a second time or reading it for a third time, both of which I absolutely refuse to do. I cannot get through it without my eyes glazing over the pages and my brain skipping ahead like I’m skimming a restaurant menu without really reading it.
MitM’s power is a pretty stock-standard “mirror world” concept and this fight executes it in a confusing way that isn’t all that fun to watch. Normally even bad fights in JJBA have a kind of fun JoJo weirdness to them or some kind of original nonsense take on a concept, but MitM is just “yup it’s exactly a mirror world power, 100% the first thing you’d expect.”
Purple Haze has an alright concept for a power, but it doesn’t actually end up DOING anything. And neither does Fugo. Or Abacchio, really. And this doesn’t even do a good job introducing Fugo’s power because he doesn’t use it properly, and then this is the only thing Fugo ends up doing before he outties from the series. Oops.
On top of that, the fight is resolved by Giorno Nonsense™ like usual.
It goes on twice as long as it should in the manga. The anime makes it slightly more watchable, but not watchable enough that I didn’t end up skipping through it out of sheer boredom, which I did with none of the other fights so far, including Babyface.
...
...
(okay that’s a lie I skipped the Boat/Balloon fight a bit, that fight fucking sucks)

Dear thezcmme,

I was trying to sweeten the deal by letting him think he’d be going after a president.  Sure, it was a lie, but it was for the sake of motivation!  There’s no harm in that, is there?

If he hadn’t figured it out, anyway...

Aesthetic for @thezcmme and the slightly spoilery request regarding the fanfic. I figured the aesthetic didn’t really reveal any spoilers so I hope it’s fine that I didn’t put a spoiler warning. Hope you like it!

Dear thezcmme,
Tumblr media
How exactly do you quantify a “fair share” of cases?  I’m always happy to give one of my subordinates a chance to gain some courtroom experience, but I let clients hire whichever one of us they prefer.  If more of them want to hire me over Apollo or Athena, that’s their choice.
Tumblr media
We could try picking one of us out of a hat for each case, but then a certain unnamed individual would shout, “These games are fixed!” every time they lost.

Dear thezcmme,

That doesn’t sound so ominous to me.  What would “you are one” even be referring to?  It could mean something like a sense of union felt between two lovers, or it could just be something you’d say to a one-year-old.
Tumblr media
Ooh, or maybe it’s supposed to sound like “you are won”!  We did win the case, after all, didn’t we?

Dear thezcmme,

You heard right about the frozen pork buns.  I've had a few cases that weren’t exciting enough to make the news or the press, but then there are cases like that one -- ones that are just that tiny bit out of the ordinary.  Some people pick the strangest methods of covering up their crimes, don’t they?
Tumblr media
I don’t remember any cases involving a train, though.  It sure sounds like the kind I would take, but it's just not ringing a bell.  Maybe it happened early in my career and I’m just not remembering it.

Dear thezcmme,
Co-Mod: It’s actually gotten quite a bit shorter since I started here.  It now takes somewhere between two and three months.  It’s a great time to get your asks in!
(Please don’t use that as an excuse to spam our inbox, though.)
Tumblr media
Dear thezcmme again,
Co-Mod: Good question.  At this point, I actually sort of hope they don’t make one, since it practically exists already.  I guess we’ll just cross that path when we get to it.  (Get it?)

Dear Trearoos, guquis, and skibot99,
Co-Mod: Thanks for letting me know...again.

Dear skibot99,
Co-Mod: Hey, at least you’re not obsessed enough to try running the blog yourself.  Sometimes I wonder if I spend too much time talking and writing about Ace Attorney.  It’s a beautiful series, but there’s still real life to think about every now and then.
I agree that that Godot/Jake parallel is shaky at best.  For one thing, Jake’s a lot more friendly overall, and for another, he didn’t lose a lover like Godot did (unless there was something between him and Lana we don’t know about).  One big comparison I can see is that they both lost someone close to them and made some irrational decisions as a result, but I sure wouldn’t have picked up on that comparison on my own.
And if I could rewrite one thing about Ace Attorney...I’d add in a beach ball after Mia’s murder.
Tumblr media
Dear skibot99 again,
Co-Mod: If you’re referring to the Frequently Asked Questions page, I’ve already encouraged them to add their answers, so hopefully we’ll be seeing them at some point.  If it’s the Mod letters you’re referring to, I’ve been doing my best to get every new Mod’s responses in, but they all live in different places, so sometimes I have to push ahead without them.  Not that I want to, of course, but just so you guys won’t have to wait any longer than you already do.
Mod Paups: If you are talking about the faq, I forgot about that...I'll try to get on it though!
Tumblr media
Dear BadnesstheHuman,
Co-Mod: We are not having this conversation.

Mod Maya: ;-;
Mod Paups: no!! I love all the mods they are all cool ^w^ but thank you ;o
Mod Kristoph: Well...

Dear Anonymous,
Co-Mod: Very sorry about that!  One of the other Mods forgot to cut out the name and icon, so I replaced the picture but forgot to change the names in the letter.  I’ll try to keep a closer watch on that.

Dear Inferno,
Co-Mod: Yup.  I can’t be the only one who wants to play Dai Gyauten Saiban and its sequel for himself.
Mod Maya: Only hopping on to say that I would sell my left leg for DGS, thanks,
Tumblr media
Dear scineven,
Co-Mod: I first discovered the Ace Attorney series when I read Matthew Taranto’s miniseries Turnabout Kirby in his webcomic Brawl in the Family.  This eventually made me curious enough to check out the games, so I watched some playthroughs of the first game and before long, I started falling in love with the characters, the game’s unique mechanics, and the series as a whole.
I don’t remember many details about how I found this blog (I remember that it started with a Google search), but I’m sure glad I did.  I was thrilled to see that the Mod (the only moderator at the time) made an effort to respond to every letter that was sent to it, and even more thrilled when he finally answered one from me.  It’s quite a treat to be able to talk to characters in a series like this one, even if it’s actually a fellow fan pretending to be them.
I started playing one fan case for a short while, but never made the time to finish it up.  I’ll be sure to share my thoughts I have about any that I manage to make it all the way through when I get around to playing them.
Mod Kristoph: I was first introduced to Ace Attorney through the fan made video series Turnabout Storm, a crossover between Ace Attorney and My Little Pony. (Yeah, I’m a brony. Come at me.) I just gradually got interested in the series from there.
I’ve played several fan cases online. I’ve even come up with my own top 10 list of them. 10. Turnabout Trickery, 9. Turnabout Substitution, 8. Turnabout Imperfect, 7. Turnabout Tomorrow, 6. Curiosity of a Turnabout, 5. Turnabout Curtain, 4. Turnabout of Courage, 3. Two Sides of the Same Turnabout, 2. The Dragon’s Turnabout, 1. A Turnabout to El Dorado. Plus, the fangames Contempt of Court and Conflict of Interest are great too.
Thanks for the welcome!
Mod Maya:
1. When I started college, Dual Destinies was just releasing. My new friends also happened to like video games, and both happened to be Ace Attorney fans, so they were really telling me to get into it. I tried the demo, absolutely adored Athena, and here I am today.
2. I have not! I do want to write my own one of these days.
Mod Paups: I discovered the series when I stumbled with a Damon Gant sprite!! It made me so curious because I loved (and still love) his design that I started playing the games.
As for fan made cases I haven't actually played any but I remember that when I was a bit younger I made one fan case! It was more of a story than anything else.
Tumblr media
Dear Certainly Bobby Fulbright,
Co-Mod: I know this wasn’t addressed to me, but...

Mod Maya: Ty! I’ve not been keeping up lately but I’ll do my best~ I love anything nutella flavored! Though I’d die to try something sea salt flavored--Glaceon for sure, any fox-ish pokemon are all my favorite. (My best friend’s favorite is also Snorlax!)
Mod Paups: I know this isn't for me but I can't help but answer! I love loove chocolate, bubblegum and cookie flavors! As for pokes I have too many but my favorite types are in this order: Ghost, Dark, Bug, grass, water, psychic and fighting!
Mod Kristoph: Thanks for the welcome! I think I’ve been off to a slow start but I’m getting the hang of it. My favorite ice cream is definitely mint chocolate chip. Delicious! And my favorite pokemon type is probably ghost.

Dear BadnesstheHuman,
Mod Kristoph: Heh. Thanks! I kinda took their scoring with a grain of salt since I’m new and I have no idea what their scoring system was. I think I’m getting the hang of things in any case.

Dear thezcmme,

There are probably a lot more factors involved in that scenario, but I can imagine things happening that way.  I didn’t know Edgeworth’s father very well, but he seemed like one of the best mentors a rookie lawyer could ask for.  Next to the Chief, of course.
Tumblr media
I’m still happy with the way things turned out, though.  Without the DL-6 incident, I might have lost my inspiration to become an attorney, and von Karma might have kept up his corrupt winning streak.  It wouldn’t be worth the trade, if you ask me.

Dear Anonymous and Red Grandma,
I'll admit that’s a little tempting, but I think we’re doing okay on our own for now.  That’s bound to change somewhere down the road, of course, and we won’t hesitate to let everyone know when it does.

Dear thezcmme,
Letters addressed to dead characters usually go to their ghosts, but I decided to have that one be answered by the body double’s corpse as a sort of punch line for the letters to Blaise Debeste and Patricia Roland.  The Mod also did that at least once before.
Letter’s addressed to the real Huang and his body double will be given tags to match them: “#Di-Jun Huang” and “#Di-Jun Huang’s Body Double”, respectively.
Tumblr media
Dear Mothmouth,
Wait, for real?
...
...
...
Holy smokes, it’s true!  That’s just uncanny.
I don’t know where the green hair came from, but his smile looks like Maya’s, his outfit looks like Apollo wearing a butler costume, and his posture reminds me of Amy Rose.  I’d love to know what changes that guy went through to become the Phoenix Wright we know today.
As for that “Edgeworth”, I think he looks way too sinister to be the good guy he eventually becomes as the first game progresses.  If anything, he almost looks like a young Manfred von Karma, or maybe even Xin Eohp with that hairdo.  Heck, he might even be a better fit for a Professor Layton title.
I’m also curious about how the other three characters -- the assistant, mentor, and detective, from left to right.  I can’t help but think of Ema Skye while looking at the assistant, but the other two have some full-on Japanese garb going on -- not that that surprises me, but I still have to wonder why none of the others do.  It staggers the imagination, doesn’t it?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear Moth(mouth?),
One of the most fun things about games you haven’t played is seeing bits and pieces of it before actually getting to play them, then seeing how they fit into the game when you finally get to it, and AAI2 is no exception.  It’s a fairly lengthy game, much like the previous one, but everything you’ve seen from it at this point should make sense if you play or watch it all the way through.  I won’t spoil anything here, but I will say this much -- the new characters you mentioned both play numerous key roles in the game.
And, um...  No, no proposals take place in it.  Sorry.
Tumblr media
Dear angry-blonde-ish,
Tumblr media
Okay, I didn’t actually cry after reading this, but man, was that a nice gesture on your part.  It’s always great to be reminded that we’re still succeeding at entertaining people, but it’s even more gratifying to be told that we’re continuing the project started by the Admin and Mod and keeping it at the same quality level, even if it’s just one person saying it.  Thank you sincerely for sharing that with us.  Keep rocking yourself!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear Ethan Starbright,
The current wait time should still be about five months.  I see only one letter with your name on it in the queue, and it’s about a third of the way toward reaching the bottom, so unless you used a different name for the other ones you sent, I’m afraid I can’t say what happened to them.  I’ve started keeping a folder of the letters we haven’t answered because they broke the guidelines in case the senders want to know the specific reasons we had for deleting them, so if you remember what any of your letters were about, feel free to tell us, and we’ll see if we deleted them (and why).
I totally agree that Ema belongs in that picture, even if she’s only played a major role in one game.  I might even say she should be there in place of Godot, but like you said, it’s too late to argue about it now.  By the way, is it just me, or does Maya have a bad case of crazy eyes?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Dear SC,
Tumblr media
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
First of all, thanks for reminding me.
Tumblr media
Secondly, while I agree that the way the mysteries were solved left us with a lot of unanswered questions (and was also a bit anticlimactic), it was the very end of the game that made my jaw drop.  It’s just beautiful and miraculous enough to make you wonder, “Holy smokes, could something like that happen in real life?”  I’d also agree that the best part of the game is helping everyone in the hotel face the truth about themselves, whether it does anything to help Kyle out or not (which it most often does).
Third of all, in response to the video:
Tumblr media
I’ll be sure to check out the sequel as soon as I get the chance.  If it’s possible to improve on a game like this, consider me hyped!
I only got 19 of your ranking’s hint boxes correct, mostly because I could only make guesses about a lot of them, but I had some fun going through them and seeing the clever way you described each case.  And you almost fooled with the gag in your #1 ranking, so nice job with that, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear Certainly Bobby Fulbright,
Thanks a bunch, and thank you for contributing to this blog by writing to it!
Glad you liked the essay.  Rayfa is a fun character to talk about, both because of her personality and her story in the game.  I agree, there was some genius involved in the writing of her narrative.
I’d forgotten about that scene since the last time I played SoJ, but I couldn’t help but smile after watching it again.  Phoenix really has come a long way since starting out as a young, profusely-sweating lawyer.  Besides learning about dealing with children through his parenting of Trucy, he’s also learned a lot about people in general, and how to get on their good side (or bad side, in this case).  I can imagine a lot of people coming to him for advice in his old age.
And of course, Rayfa was adorable in that scene as well.  Even when she shows nothing but anger toward Phoenix, you have to admire her reasons for it (aside from her bratty attitude, that is).  She’s been told that lawyers can’t be trusted, so when she lashes out Phoenix, we can assume that it’s partly because of her sense of duty to stop him from “sullying our sacred Hall of Justice with your misdeeds,” as she puts it.  She’s obviously misjudged him, but it only makes her more lovable as a character.
-The Co-Mod
