Measuring Me: Buuuut After This Week Things Will Slow Down a Bit
Week of August 4: My Birthday!  And Bad News
Lots of celebrations including friend visiting from all over the place. I get a call while at the African American History Museum while touring with dear friends and their baby who are in from Boston that my Mom is in the hospital with a broken hip. Kept birthday festivities scheduled as planned, including Jazz in the Garden with a wonderful crowd of friends who made me feel so supported and loved.
Week of August 11: Long Island NY - Round 1
I flew up to NY on Sunday night towards the tail end of my Boston's friends trip. It was grueling deciding if I should rush up there or not, but looking back I made the right decision. I couldn't handle all the business I needed to handle until Monday anyway. It was a flurry of hospitals, rehabs, doctors, etc. There was also going into my Mom's house after having not been inside for close to 2 years. My sister and I who had a falling out in the spring, made amends and were off to the races. Banks, respite housing, lawyers, notaries, a lot was handled in a short bit of time. Let's not forget I flew back to DC on Wednesday with a new addition, my mom's 4-year-old Chorkie (Chihuahua/Yorkie), Louie is ours indefinitely.
Week of August 18: Fall Welcome Events, and Senior Living Tours
When I wasn't running 3 large orientations, onboarding a new grad student, supporting other major Welcome/Back to school events I was researching and email independent senior living communities near-ish me. Mom was surprisingly agreeable to not go back to the house she's lived in for 40 years and move down to be near me. However, finding the right spot was a multistep task. I wound up visiting 3 places this week and 2 more places the next. I also squeezed in a Hanson concert, and ACA meeting, a 90-minute massage as well as a mani/pedi this week. I've learned I need to take care of me before I can take care of anyone else!
Week of August 25: Grad classes, Vet visits, Musicals, Wedding calls, More Senior Living Tours, and back up to NY
This week was the first work of classes where I work, which was also the first week of classes for me as a brand new grad student! I had 2 classes, one Wed and one Thurs from 5:30pm-8pm. I actually had to race out of my first class which thankfully let out a little early to uber to the Kennedy Center to see am 8pm performance of Dear Evan Hansen - it was amazing! I also visited the last 2 senior living options for mom that week and had 2 Lisbon-based wedding planner calls. One planner was great, but her price tag was steep. One planner was rude and made me feel dumb. I had a wedding planning meltdown, but had a good chat with my dear friend SC who helped me re-group. I've been building (and will continue to build) a nice pot of wedding/honeymoon money. However, when I think about all the side hustles and sacrifices I've made for a lot of this money I don't want to blow it on "a party" that usually has more bells and whistles than we are interested in. So I'm hoping to plan a celebration vacation with loved ones and I'm working with a travel agent friend of mine. I spent Labor Day weekend back in NY, this time I drove - I left as the sun rose on Saturday morning and had a full weekend of bank nonsense, errands, got Mom settled in her "respite" stay at an assisted living community, went over senior living options with Mom, and going through my childhood bedroom - including my sister and I wearing our prom dresses. We took Freddie off all his meds because he health has not been improving and it seems the meds were only making him feel sicker - the change has actually seemed to help outwardly, but still super stressful. Also, poor Louie got neutered this week and was in a cone of shame for 2 weeks!
Week of September 1: NY, Grad School, Hiking, and Pump Official
I was in NY until Tuesday and then drove back down, I had another week of two grad classes, but after sitting through my second nutrition class I was sure that it was too much science and more work than I could handle. I ended up dropping that class before the add/drop period ended and felt relieved. I did another visit to Mom's top two senior living choices to view the exact rooms that were open. I also made time for fitness. I got a permanent gig teaching Body Pump on Fridays at 6pm, I had been long term subbing the class since April, but the instructor decided to give it up and I got to take it over! The half-semester Urban Hiking class I teach started this week, which has once again proven to be a delightful highlight in my life! I also squeezed in another concert too!
Week of September 8: Fitness, Mercedes Bastards, Injury, and Friend Dates
I kicked off the week with an all-day AFAA (Athletics and Fitness Association of American) continuing ed workshop that I had already postponed once due to my crazy schedule. It was really great though, I'm glad I went. I signed papers on a place for Mom which didn't come without its own Mom drama - but at least it was relatively mild. I squeezed in a couple of friends dates: manicures with AL, walk with LH, and a dinner date LB. I was still chugging through my one grad class, but having some concerns about if this program was the right direction for me, it's much more Public Health-oriented than the Fitness and Wellness aspect of health I'm truly interested in. I had a bunch of petsitting clients and have had them during all the previous crazy weeks. I already separately about the ordeal with my Mom's leased car, but Mercedes are crooks! I had toyed with officially taking over the lease, but there is like a $1500 transfer fee that "they can't waive." There's no way they are getting a penny more than we have to pay. I made a bunch of calls to NY based insurance folks I know as well as talked to my mom's insurance agency and my insurance agency to make sure when I start driving her car everything is squared away. Also, this week my colleague aka one other coworker because I manage an office of two had a personal injury that had her out of the office for about a week. As I well know, life happens, but it started to feel like when it rains it pours....
Week of Sept 15: Drag Brunch, Euro Trips, a Resignation, and Back to NY for an Explosive Visit
I kicked off this week with a highly anticipated Sunday Funday with some fabulous work friends. I got all dolled up and headed to a drag brunch in DC which led to gay bar-hopping on a beautiful afternoon. Despite making my way home at 6pm, I still felt like trash most of Monday, but thankfully I was off. I did have my first celebration vacation in Portugal call with my friend DR who is a travel agent. It was a really exciting call and the fact that I know DR already makes things a lot easier. We have a plan for me to make the most of my scouting trip in November which is a relief. I was having a particularly busy week and was just pushing through until we get Mom moved, when my coworker (aka person 2 of our 2 person department) drop a bomb on me, she got a new job and is resigning effective 10/10 which is 3 weeks notice. I can say I'm surprised she's a great employee, had a tough job, and has been with me for almost 2.5 years. I was more shocked by her not giving me any sort of heads up. I went to a tailspin back in Jan 2017 when the other half of my office left and I was alone. Thankfully I am not 5 months into my job like I was then, this time of year is honestly "the best" time to be short-staffed and I am looking to do a re-org that hopefully would make things even better in the future. However, it means a lot more work on me all the way around. I head back to NY via train this time! I actually had my Urban Hiking class start and end at Union Station which made for a great hike and for me to easily make a 4:15pm train. Saturday night was just pizza and wine with my sister. Sunday we headed to Long Island to see my Mom. We needed a durable power of attorney signed - the one we did when my Mom was first in the hospital didn't cover as much as we need and my sister and I need the power to act on my Mother's behalf independently since I'll be handling VA business and my sister is handling NY business. My sister has a friend who is a notary and the friend was also going to on LI visiting family and agreed to come to Mom's assisted living place to have us all sign paperwork. Well, my Mom out of the blue demanded cigarettes and wine before agreeing to sign the papers. This was extremely hurtful. Most of you know my Mother is an alcoholic. Did she fall down down the stairs and break her hip because she was drunk, it's possible. Has her drinking made my life a nightmare especially the last few years? Yes. Having her hospitalized and in the care of others meant she wasn't drinking, she was actually taking her meds, and she had company and therefore didn't need to call me all the G-D time. Well, apparently my Mom's sister bought her cigarettes the week the before (WHY?!?!). My Mom was having bullshit anxiety over an eye doctor appointment because for the 15th time she's convinced she's going blind (she's not, she's fine). She NEEDED the wine and cigarettes and threw a tantrum right in the lobby, right in front of my sister's notary friend (who at least knows some of my Mom's craziness), it was horrifying and embarrassing. My sister started crying and here I am trying to keep it together. I tried to explain to Mom that her drinking was hurtful to us, especially since we've both dropped everything to tend to her situation. I explained that it feels like she is choosing wine over us and she didn't deny it. I needed these papers signed so I conceded and said after we did house stuff that day I'd take her to buy cigarettes, but I don't want to be anywhere near her when or soon after she's been drinking. After some more bank business and errands, I dropped her at a liquor store (walker and all) to get herself her precious wine. I told her I needed to cool off and needed a break from her for a few days, I would call her when I was ready.
Week of September 22: Grad School Drop Out, Wedding Planning, & Car Sales
As I drove back to DC on Monday knowing that I didn't get a chance to do my reading for grad school or work on a paper, I felt stressed (plus the stress of driving my Mom's brand new Mercedes 300 miles to DC as essentially it's maiden voyage). I have so much stress on between Mom stuff, being an office of one, wedding stuff and just general life I was at my max. The class was something I could do something about. I emailed the professor asking for an extension (I automatically have more compassion for my students now), but also let him know I was investigated dropping the class. Since add/drop and the refund period was over I was worried that since this class was being paid for my employer's tuition benefit that there might be some major financial implication. I reached out to the department chair and the HR benefits lady. The way the benefits work and the fact I hadn't used them before means I'm not on the hook for the $5000+ tuition or any of the taxes related. There is only a $27 gap that I will pay taxes on, OKAY. So I dropped the class and ultimately withdrew from the grad certificate program. I feel major relief, not only over this semester, but over the next 2 years that I had penciled in grad school for. I quickly realized that the AFAA professional development workshop is more in line with what I want than anything overly academic - I mean I already have a masters. I think eventually may get an AFAA nutrition certificate which is far less intensive and way more applicable than the route I was going to take. Now with my Wednesdays free again, I was able to make my triumphant return to my Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA) meeting and I was so happy to be there with my people. I also tried to carve out more time this week for wedding stuff. Talked through my new vacation celebration idea with some friends who will be on the invite list, talked more with my travel agent D, and with my friend DM who is traveling with me for the scouting trip. I'm feeling more focused and ready to make decisions. I also sold my 2007 Camry to a coworker who happened to be in the market for a reliable used car, just as I was learning that I would be driving my mom's car and therefore wanted to sell mine. We hit a couple of snags, like the fact that my car's aftermarket tints that came on the car when I bought them were too dark to pass MD inspection. Or that I needed to sign the back of the title over to my friend, the buyer. She learned AFTER spending 3 hours at the DMV, oops! I cleaned the car out and removed my stickers from the window and bumper - that 26.2 sticker did not want to budge!
What will the next 2 weeks hold is yet to be fully seen, but here's the summary I'm expecting
Week of September 29: Senior living lease signing, 1000 last-minute Mom things, ACA, Running a 2,000 person Family/Alumni Weekend, Teaching my last Urban Hiking class of the semester and driving to NY with my fiance T and Freddie (we don't Louie thinking he is going back).
Week of October 6: Pack up the stuff that's going to VA with my Mom in a U-Haul van T is driving, I'm driving my Mom down (AKA the woman who hasn't left NY state in at least 10 years), move her into her new place, have two last days in the office having transition meeting with my colleague before she leaves on 10/10, I also have birthday celebration plans for T and my friend SL whose birthdays are this week. Also, it's my Mom's birthday so I imagine we'll be taking her out.

Annals of Taizu of Later Wei, Part 1
[From WS002. Covers up to and including 391.]
The Grand Founder [taizu], the Guiding and Martial [daowu] August Emperor, taboo Gui, was August Emperor Zhaocheng's principle grandson and August Emperor Xianming's son. His mother was the Xianming August Empress He. Earlier, because of the migrating, she roamed to Yunze and then went to sleep. She dreamt the sun set out inside the house. She woke up and saw light from the window connected to the sky, suddenly she had a feeling. Accordingly in the 34th Year of Jianguo, the 7th Month, the 7th Day [4 August 371], she gave birth to Taizu to the north of Canhe Slope. That night there again was a shining light. Zhaocheng was greatly pleased. The crowd of subjects declared their congratulations, there was great amnesty, and reported it to the ancestral founders.
The guardians, since the Emperor's body several times heavier than a regular boy, furtively [?] unmatched, unusual and strange. Next year [372 AD], there was an elm tree growing at hole where they buried the placenta. Later thereupon there was a complete forest. As a youth was an able speaker, his eyes had a shining spark, he had a broad forehead and large ears. The multitudes were all amazed with him.
When he was 6 sui, Zhaocheng expired [in 376 AD]. Fu Jian dispatched generals for an interior affront, wanting to move the Emperor to Chang'an, but he managed to escape. This is told in the Biography of Yan Feng. When Jian's army had turned back, the state's multitudes scattered and left. The Chief Man of the Southern Section, Zhangsun Song, Yuan Ta, and others, fully commanded the former population to go south and rely on Kuren. The Emperor hence moved to favour the Dugu section.
1st Year [377 AD], buried the Illuminating and Completing [zhaocheng] August Emperor at Jinling [“the Golden Mound”]. They built the Catalpa Palace, persimmon trees fully grew to a complete forest. Though the Emperor was young and immature, his insight was not among the crowd. Kuren often spoke to his sons, saying:
The Emperor has lofty aspirations for Under Heaven, to restore again the vast patrimony. The one to brilliantly display the ancestral founders surely is this master.
7th Year, Winter, 10th Month [11 November – 10 December 383], Fu Jian was defeated South of the Huai. That Month, Murong Wen and others killed Kuren. Kuren's younger brother Juan administered the state's sections.
8th Year [384 AD], Murong Wei's younger brother Chong usurped the establishment. Yao Chang proclaimed himself Great Shanyu and Ten Thousand Years King of Qin. Murong Chui usurped to proclaim [himself King of Yan].
9th Year [385 AD], Kuren's son Xian killed Juan and replaced him, and therefore wanted to plan rebellion. A trader, Wang Bo, heard of it, and stepped on the Emperor's foot in the middle of the multitudes. The Emperor therefore hurried to turn back. A that, the former Chief Man Liang Gaipen's son Liujuan was Xian's master planner, and fully knew about his plans. He secretly sent Mu Chong, a native of the section, to hurry and report. The Emperor therefore secretly joined with the old subjects Zhangsun Jian, Yuan Ta, and others.
Autumn, 8th Month [21 September – 19 October], therefore favoured the Helan section. That day, Xian as a result sent people to seek the Emperor, but did not catch up. This is told in the Biography of Empress Dowager Xianming.
That Year, the Xianbei Qifu Guoren privately took the office of Great Shanyu. Fu Jian was killed by Yao Chang, his son Pi usurped the establishment.
[Dengguo 1, 15 February 386 – 4 February 387]
1st Year of Dengguo [“Ascending the State], Spring, 1st Month, wushen [20 February], the Emperor took the throne with the rank of King of Dai. Suburban [sacrifices to] Heaven and established the inaugural. A great assembly at Niuchuan. Again used Zhangsun Song as Chief Man of the Southern Section. Used Shusun Puluo as Chief Man of the Northern Section. Distributed feudal ranks and recounted merits, each proportionally.
2nd Month [17 March – 14 April], favoured Dingxiang's Shengle. Rested the multitudes and taught agriculture.
3rd Month [15 April – 14 May], Liu Xian ran from Shanwu south to Mayi. His kinsman Nuzhen led his section to come and surrender.
Summer, 4th Month [15 May – 12 June], changed the designation to King of Wei.
5th Month [13 June – 13 July], the Chariot Drove east to favour Lingshi. The Hufohou section's leader, Houchen, and the Yifu sectoin's leader, Daiti, rebelled and fled. The various generals purused them. The Emperor said:
Houchen and others for generations have cultivated dutiful service and only have small errors. We ought furthermore to forbear it. At the present initial beginnings, people's feelings are not yet as one. The foolish and short-sighted ones firmly responds with stirring about. It is insufficient to pursue.
Autumn, 7th Month, jiyou [20 August], the Chariot Drove back to Shengle. Daiti then used the section groups to come and surrender. After ten and several days, he absconded and ran to Liu Xian. The Emperor made his grandson Beijin replace him and lead the section groups.
That Month [11 August – 9 September], Liu Xian's younger brother Feinie led cavalry to plunder Nuzhen's section groups. He then led to thereby come and surrender.
Earlier, the Emperor's junior uncle Kuduo was moved [by] Fu Jian to Chang'an. Because of that he followed Murong Yong. Yong used him as Grand Warden of Xinxing.
8th Month [10 September – 9 October], Liu Xian dispatched his younger brother Kangni to welcome Kuduo, and use troops to follow him, and come and pressure the southern frontier. Hence the various sections were stirred and agitated, people in their looked with expectations. The Emperor's left and right, Yuhuan and others, planned with the sectoin groups to be rebellious to thereby submit to him. The affair leaked. Executed the five people who had made the plans, and fully did not inquire into the remainder.
The Emperor worried about interior difficulties, and therefore went north beyond Yin Mountain to favour the Helan section, block the mountains and become strong. He dispatched  the travellers An Tong and Zhangsun He and sent them to Murong Chui [for him] to thereby campaign with a host. Chui dispatched envoys to court with tribute, and also ordered his sons Helin to lead infantry and cavalry to thereby follow Tong and others.
Winter, 10th Month [8 November – 7 December], Helin's army had not yet arrived but the bandits were already pressuring in front. Hence Chief Man of the Northern Section, Shusun Puluo and others, 13 people, and the various Wuhuan absconded and fled to Weichen. The Emperor moved from Nu Mountain to favour Niuchuan. He garrisoned to the south of Yan river, and set out for the valleys of Dai. He met up with Helin at Guoliu, and greatly routed Kuduo. Kuduo fled to Weichen. Weichen killed him. The Emperor thoroughly gathered his multitudes.
12th Month [6 January – 4 February], Murong Chui dispatched envoys to court with court with tribute, and offered the Emperor seal and ribbon of the Western Shanyu and enfeoffment as King of Shanggu. The Emperor did not accept.
This Year, Murong Chui usurped and declared himself August Emperor at Zhongshan, titling himself Great Yan. Fu Pi died. Fu Deng established himself in Longdong. Yao Chang declared himself August Emperor at Chang'an, titling himself Great Qin. Murong Chong was killed by his section subordinates. Murong Yong usurped the establishment.
[Dengguo 2, 5 February 387 – 24 January 388]
2nd Year, Spring, 1st Month [5 February – 5 March], distributed and bestowed on the meritted subjects, Zhangsun Song and others, 73 people, each proportionally.
2nd Month [6 March – 4 April], the Emperor favoured Niuchuan.
Summer, 5th Month, [3 June – 1 July], dispatched the traveller An Tong to recruit troops from Murong Chui. Chui sent his son Helin to lead the multitudes to come and meet up.
6th Month [2 July – 31 July], the Emperor personally conquered Liu Xian to the south of Mayi, pursued him to Mize, and greatly routed him. Xian ran south to Murong Yong. Fully gathered his section multitudes.
Autumn, 8th Month [30 August – 28 September], the Emperor arrived from attacking Xian.
Winter, 10th Month, guimao [7 December?], favoured Ruanyuan. Dispatched the Chief Man of the Outer Court, Wang Jian, sending him to Murong Chui.
11th Month [27 November – 26 December], thereupon favoured Chicheng.
12th Month [27 December – 24 January], patrolled Songmo. Turned back to favour Niuchuan.
[Dengguo 3, 25 January 388 – 11 February 389]
3rd Year, Spring, 2nd Month [25 March – 22 April], the Emperor patrolled east.
Summer, 4th Month [22 May – 20 June], favoured to the east Chicheng.
5th Month, guihai [24 June], campaigned east against the Kumoxi.
6th Month [20 July – 18 August], greatly routed them. Captured their four sections more than 100 000 of mixed livestock, and crossed the Ruoluo River. Distributed and rewarded the generals and soldiers each proportionally.
Autumn, 7th Month, gengshen [20 August], the Kumo section's leader Jiuji assembled the lost and scattered, and at night violated the Acting Palace. Let loose cavalry to beat and chastise, and fully killed them.

I thank you. I am married and have 3 childern (ages 9, 12, and 16) I just bought a waterfront home which is valued at 500,000 with a 300,000 mortgage. My jewrely is about 10,000. We have 3 cars a 2004 BMW, a 2002 Lexus and 1997 Jeep Wrangler. My husband works at a large manufacturing firm and earns about 125 K. I run a day care center from my home and earn about 45K. I don't have any employees. My kids all go to private school - which costs me about 25 a year. We honestly have no savings or investments and almost no discretionary income at the end of the month. ( which is a main reason I am writing this!) I met with a financial planner and they suggested on purchasing a 50,000 variable life policy for each of us as an investement. I think i am worried about the high vost of these policies This is what is presently covered property risks Ho3 with no endorsements or riders, dwelling 300,000, liability 100,000, medical payments 2500/person, uninsured/underinsured motorist 100,000,collision and other than collision (100 deductible) Personal risks: Life - my husband employer paid group term 50,000, we both have 50,000 universal life policy disability - mr. murphy - employer paid group policy (LTD with a 90 day wait with benefits to age 65) I have no coverage Medical: My husband - employer paid Major Medical (family plan) myself - i have an individual plan and still pay premiums I thank you for whatever you can give me!!""

I backed into a parked car and apparently broke the tail light and a small dent on the bumper; my car didn't have a scratch. I freaked out and left with out leaving a note. Weird/awful situation. Co-signed on car loan with a longtime friend when he broke off and started his own business. His business tanked, as did his personal life. Lost his job, his business, everything. He's now about a year behind in payments, and the bank is coming after me. Since it's destroying my credit (and life), I'm paying off the loan. The bad news continues. Apparently he loaned the car to his brother, that has disappered and isn't returning it, and the car is nowhere to be found. So now I own nothing. Worse, I'm terrified that whoever has the car could wreck it, and I'm liable. So now I have to get insurance, for a car I don't have possession of, and report it stolen. Young Drivers Insurance question?
I'm 18 years old and passed my driving test on the 30th September 2010. I don't have a car because I cant afford the insurance. I'm working full time. I found a nice little car, a 2001 RENAULT CLIO, 1.2 16V 3dr Hatchback. I used a price comparison site to get a basic idea of what the insurance would be on it - and using my real own details and it was 5993. So I messed around a bit and added my mum as a second/extra driver. The price crashed down to 3,153. The option to add another driver was still there so I added my dad too and the price is now 2,617 - much more in my price range. I called them in and was like look at this and what do you think and they both agreed that there was something wrong with it and there would be a catch somewhere but I disagree. They said it would affect their own no claims however when added a extra driver no information about an extra driver is there. Are they right that there would be a catch? And can someone give me some more information about this please! Thanks!""

Sue car insurance company?
Hi there. I have a question. I want to SUE my Car insurance company because they refuse to pay for my stolen car which is been more then 6 months and still hasn't been recovered. I was paying full coverage for about 4 months till the moment my Range Rover 1998 was stolen. After filing proper claims i get a letter from my insurance that they denied the claim. The reason why was because i misrepresented myself. and what they meant by that was that when i signed the contract i selected NO in a question ( Has your license ever been suspended or revoked) Now let me explain how this happened. I got the insurance thru my broker. Everything was done by phone. My broker happened to be family of dear friend of mine. At the time i asked for insurance my driver license was suspended already suspended and the reason why was because of child support for which i was going thru courts with my ex. First i decided to insure my car liability and my car was paid in full. On the liability contract it wasn't any question regarding my driver license either was suspended or not. After a week or so i thought to myself that if i get in a accident god forbid and it was my fault i have to may myself for damages and you know for such a car would be very expensive so i asked my broker if i can changed it to full coverage and so they did. on the day i did the change the girl that worked for my broker and assisting me asked me Klodian you are aware your license is suspended. I said yes and i explained the reason y. So she found this insurance company for a low price and she emailed me the contract to sign and fax it to her. now under the questions which i saw of course latter after i was denied claim i saw they were marked all NO and that was done on computer not hand writing. which of course in this case was done by the girl that helped me. Now my broker told me that insurance company should had run your driving record before they issue insurance to you and if they done that they were gone see your driver lisence was suspended. But when my broker asked them why they didnt run it Their answer was that they trusted me based on the contract i signed which to my opinion is BS. Now i want to sue them and all the lawyers they refuse to get my case and my believe is because my car is worth about $4800.00 and they don't see how they can make money out of me and i don't have to pay them up front. Now if i go on small claim max i can go is $3000.00 ????

It’s gonna be May
MONTH OF May
Ready for more stability in your life, Aries? Well, here it comes—kinda. The Sun is in Taurus until May 20, heating up your second house of money, work and security. This is your annual time to get grounded after your birthday season and to put a practical action plan behind your big ideas. After an active and unpredictable April, you might be craving more certainty and direction!
But the headline news arrives smack in the middle of the month and with it, some surprising plot twists. On May 15, disruptor Uranus enters Taurus for the first time since 1942—so yeah, it’s definitely a big deal. Uranus, the planet of sudden change, revolution and innovation, will be here for the next eight years, causing a ripple effect through your career and financial endeavors.
In some ways, it could be a relief: You’ve hosted Uranus in Aries since 2011, which has been exciting and exhausting in equal measure. This chapter of your life was ripe with exploration and experimentation, but since Uranus also creates upheaval, it’s been hard to gain traction on your lofty plans. Now that Uranus will settle into Taurus and your concrete second house, you’ll be ready to build—and monetize—one (or more) of your brilliant ideas. If you’ve been dreaming of a career change, you might finally take action. The way you make a living could shift radically between now and 2026, and since Uranus rules technology, your income could come from unconventional sources. Perhaps you’ll start investing in cryptocurrency, launch an app that goes viral or begin earning passive income online.
But don’t blow your whole budget on bitcoin, Aries. Uranus is in “fall” in Taurus, meaning it’s in its least comfortable position here. It makes sense: Uranus is all about massive change, while Taurus craves consistency and wants to keep things the same. It’s like hosting a radical activist and a member of the old guard in the same place. They’ll have to settle their differences and strike a balance between progress and tradition.
Finding a middle ground can still be fun. While you might not quit your day job immediately, you could decide to go the freelance or independent-contractor route. Or you may start shifting your daily lifestyle to include some cutting-edge dietary and wellness practices. Uranus will back into Aries one last time—from November 6, 2018, until March 6, 2019—before it enters Taurus for the long haul next spring. Treat this first round as a test run by taking a toe-in-the-water approach or dabbling with a few different options.
That same day (May 15), the stars also serve up the year’s only Taurus new moon, which will reset your fiscal compass. While Uranus brews up some extreme possibilities, the new moon asks: What do you want in the next two weeks…and six months? Seeds planted now will manifest at the Taurus full moon on October 24. Map out a step-by-step action plan. If you’d like to change a habit or start some new daily rituals, this is an auspicious time to start.
On May 20, the Sun flits into Gemini for a month-long spin through your third house of communication and mental processes. Activity will heat up on the local scene, and your social life will be abuzz. After an industrious Taurus season, you can now step away from your workspace and pitch your ideas, brainstorm or just enjoy friendly companionship. You never know when one of your conversations could light a spark of inspiration. Since the third house rules neighborhoods, you might get involved in a community project, like a seed and plant exchange, a fundraising drive or a spring cleanup of a public space.
While a lot of this month’s cosmic activity is practical, there’s also a mystical undercurrent brewing. From May until August, expansive Jupiter in Scorpio will travel in a close trine—a harmonious, 120-degree angle—to spiritual Neptune in Pisces. Jupiter is in your eighth house of intimacy while Neptune is in your twelfth house of receiving and creativity. Merging with others for mutual gain—and to improve society—could be an auspicious move.
These “yin” energies are a very different vibe for many Aries, since you tend to be more of a proactive pursuer. Sitting back and waiting for divine guidance? Sounds good on paper, but it’s not something you actually DO most of the time. But patience is crucial to tapping into the magic of this transit, Aries. Visualize the outcome you desire, then let the universe arrange the details of how it happens.
On May 25, Jupiter and Neptune will make an exact alignment, which can bring a supercharged moment of manifesting. The saying “ask, believe, receive” could become more than a New Age bumper sticker platitude. You might connect with a kindred spirit or, under these supernatural stars, channel a powerful message from a departed loved one. If you’ve been grappling with a loss or feeling emotionally blocked, you might decide to try a past-life regression or a session with a qualified spirit medium. A close person could open up and share a secret; keep it in absolute confidence if they do.
Jupiter and Neptune’s alignment can help you open up to love, since these planets lend you the courage to be vulnerable and compassionate. As an experiment, let go of a grudge and forgive, Aries. Hanging onto that resentment is only hurting YOU, so release yourself from the grips of this toxic dynamic. And yes, we know this is easier said than done. Often we “protect” ourselves from further hurt by retelling a narrative that casts the other person as an untrustworthy villain. Leaving that story behind can be scary. But as Jupiter and Neptune make this rare alignment, they’ll help you to do so—and set yourself free in the process.
The month ends on a note of sweet freedom, when the May 29 Sagittarius full moon beams into your ninth house of adventure, travel and new experiences. Where have you been holding yourself back? Unleash yourself, Ram! You’re ready to take a leap of faith, perhaps on a project you’ve been developing since the Sagittarius new moon back on December 3, 2017. An idea that seemed outlandish or “impossible” might come together, or you could summon the courage to launch one of your visionary concepts to a wider market. With the revelatory full moon in your truth-telling ninth house, an honest conversation could clear the air. Have you been looking for the right moment to take a giant step into your own future? This full moon could be it!
LOVE & ROMANCE:
For the first half of May, amorous Venus is revving things up in mental Gemini and your social third house, but when it comes to heavy-duty romancing, she’s in more of a low-power mode. While it’s fine to go out and flirt, you may not be up to your usual level of focus and fierceness. But that could be a good thing! When dating feels like an obligation—or a job—nothing really gels. Relax and have fun, and who knows? By dialing the pressure down, you may actually feel more alluring! Attached? Schedule more hangouts with mutual pals and reconnect to the friendship part of your bond.
On top of that, Mars is trooping through Capricorn and your career house from March 17 to May 16, keeping you so busy at work that there’s precious little time for romance. Or, you could start to stress about the future of a commitment. Don’t get so caught up in where something is going that you lose sight of the here and now. Because this realm rules men and authority figures, you may be feeling some old “dad issues” or tension from your family that no Aries ever responds well to. Suss out what YOU want from a desire to gain approval from someone you admire. Nobody appreciates being treated like a trophy.
The emotional climate shifts in the second half of the month. Passionate Mars barrels into Aquarius and your eleventh house of technology and platonic connections on May 16 (through August 12—an extended visit because the red planet turns retrograde on June 26). This excitable energy will color your summer, possibly igniting a romance with a friend or a promising online prospect. Note that the retrograde could throw a wrench into things and delay progress, so be patient!
While Mars is in this somewhat aloof zone, Venus heads off in a whole other direction, shimmying into Cancer and your sentimental, touchy-feely fourth house on May 19. Domestic matters will be foremost on your mind. If you’re in a newish relationship, you might already be thinking of key exchanges—or least imagining what this person would be like to live with. Easy there, Ram: If this is a keeper, there’ll be plenty of time for that, so enjoy the buildup! Couples will enjoy doing more nesting, and nest-feathering. Got a dream reno project in mind? Start researching, gathering samples and getting bids!
Key Dates: May 7: Venus-Neptune square Old childhood wounds could get triggered and raise anxiety levels. But instead of reflexively talking them out, try to FEEL them in your body and work through them that way. Don’t let fear or confusion cause you to lash out at innocent parties. Chances are, your imagination is running wild.

MONEY & CAREER:
Keep on pushing, Aries! On May 16, energizer Mars will wrap up a two-month visit to Capricorn, your tenth house of career and success, which has sent your ambitions skyward. Mars happens to be your ruling planet, so you’re particularly impacted by its movements. And since it only visits his “exalted” sign every two years, you could make huge strides by the middle of May.
Just before Mars exits, innovator Uranus will blast into Taurus and your second house of work and finances on May 15, accompanied by a new moon in this same security-seeking sign. Uranus hasn’t been here in 77 years, so prepare for a once-in-a-lifetime money makeover—and possibly a radical one—between now and 2026. As Uranus ends a seven-year run through Aries, you may feel some relief, although he’ll be back for a final hurrah from November 6, 2018, until March 6, 2019. But finally, you can start turning your ahead-of-the-curve ideas into a reliable income stream.
Start mapping out ways to monetize your ingenuity, Ram. With technophile Uranus here, perhaps you’ll set up a platform where you can deliver digital products, thrive at e-commerce or work remotely. Explore ways that you can bring ease and simplicity to your life through apps or the “gig economy.”
These plans could accelerate once Mars marches into Aquarius and your digitally savvy, collaborative eleventh house from May 16 to August 12. Mars is here for an extended three-month stay, so your summer could be consumed with a project that has a strong virtual component. The only caveat? Mars will turn retrograde on June 26, which could bring frustrating slowdowns and tension. Try to work out most of the kinks in the next six weeks if you can! Mars will have a second, retrograde-free run from September 10 to November 15, so anything you “soft launch” in the next two months could go full-scale this fall.
Key Dates: May 8: Sun-Jupiter opposition Double-check your numbers! Today, as the willful Sun locks horns with optimistic Jupiter across your financial axis, some of your time-and-money calculations may be way off the mark. Don’t be lured into overspending. Go back to the drawing board and get it right.

From Planning to Breaking Ground
In the summer of 2013 architect John Kinsley decided that an infill site near to his home in Portobello, Edinburgh, would make a good location for a community self build. Three years on, work is now getting underway on site.
Following last month’s entry which focused on what accommodation options the scheme would offer, this month’s instalment takes a closer look at what happened when the design was finalised
A painless process
We achieved planning permission to go ahead in December 2014. In the end, it was a relatively stress-free journey. We’d drummed up as much support for our proposals as we would from friends, colleagues and neighbours. The planners were supportive of the scheme, favouring an unashamedly modern approach over the previously approved design. There were only five objections, so approval was obtained without the project needing to go to committee.
Securing funding
While our application was with the planning department, we pressed on with talking to lenders and finalised how we were going to arrange ourselves as a group.
After taking advice from our lawyer and the Ecology Building Society – who emerged as our preferred lender – we established a limited company called Bath Street Collective Custom Build (BCCB), which would act as the client. BCCB would borrow the funding required for the construction, and when the build was complete each of the participants involved would buy their flat from them so the funding could be repaid.
We spent quite some time working through the necessary Shareholders Agreement and Articles of Association, trying to foresee all the potential pitfalls we might come across. For example, we looked at what would happen if someone dropped out of the project or if one of the parties defaulted on their borrowing repayments, etc.
This proved to be time well spent, as our builder colleague pulled out of the venture in spring 2015. Fortunately, he was immediately replaced by a local family. They took over the interest not only in his two-bedroom flat, but also in the adjacent one-bedroom flat, which was still spare at that stage. A quick redesign of these spaces into one large four-bedroom flat, and we had a full quota again!
Tying up loose ends
With the planners on side, it was now ‘squeaky bum time’ in terms of committing to the project and buying the site. A number of us had already sold up and moved into rented accommodation in order to generate the funding we needed to purchase the land. There were some delays on the vendor’s side, but the site was eventually acquired on 4th June 2015.
The next few months were spent finalising the design prior to going out to tender. We had a couple of main contractors prepare outline costings based on our planning drawings that we could review against our budget. We engaged a former engineer colleague of mine, Paul Jenkins, who now ran his own practice, Create Engineering to provide structural engineering support. We selected a Spanish company, Egoin, to supply the cross-laminated timber frame.
We also met with window manufacturers, stone and zinc cladding subcontractors, Reglit (who supplied the cast glass we were proposing to use), electrical firms and potential suppliers of the mechanical ventilation system.
Drawings depicting the front and rear elevations
By the autumn, we were finally ready to go out to tender to three local main contractors. Tender returns were received in November 2015. The best figure we received was from H M Raitt & Sons, a family-run business based only a couple of miles down the road from the site – their quote was around 5% higher than our budget. We spent the end of the year and the first few weeks of 2016 fine-tuning the design and re-tendering some elements with alternative subcontractors to bring costs into line with what we could afford.
Overcoming the challenges
The next main hurdle was to formally apply for the funding from the Ecology Building Society (EBS). Despite having been in close contact with them for a year or so, there was a lot of detail to be resolved and numerous queries. Firstly, in the intervening period between us starting the discussion with EBS and getting to the point where we could make a formal application, the criteria for lending had increased so that the firm was only lending to Passivhaus projects.
We’d already made the decision to build to equivalent stands of energy efficiency, but we weren’t intending to go for the accreditation as well. As a result, we had to demonstrate to EBS how our scheme complied with Passivhaus principles.
In order to get funding we also had to put together a cash-flow spread sheet, which turned out to be quite complex. In addition to showing what we were going to be spending money on, this document also had to detail exactly when we would be drawing down each chunk of money, including fully-itemised interest payments.
Like many lenders, EBS will only lend at any one point up to 80% of the value of the build at that stage. According to estimates from the company’s surveyors, the value of our project wouldn’t grow significantly until the structure reached wind and watertight stage. This meant the amount of money we could borrow prior to this point was less than we wanted it to be, and our budgeting schedule had to be amended to reflect this.
In addition to all of the above, we also had to provide EBS with proof that we, as a group, had sufficient backup funds to deal with any unforeseen circumstances that might wipe out our contingency budget.
On the whole, EBS was a pleasure to do business with. After all, if I was the one lending the money I’d have insisted on the same assurances! At the time, the only thing that was a little frustrating about this process was that we could have provided these guarantees at a much earlier stage. In the end, we lost three months finalising these details, however, by April we were finally ready to start building!

A Month-by-Month Guide to the Best Places to Travel in 2017
This article originally appeared on Money.com.
With the planet feeling smaller than ever before, there’s no need to stay local with your vacation plans. For inspiration, MONEY has lined up a year’s worth of great travel destinations, near and far—one for every month of 2017. This year’s picks take advantage of currency shifts and travel trends, to identify the perfect set of seasonal bargains. Use the following list to inspire your travel schedule—then read the accompanying travel planner to find the hotels, restaurants, and activities that will make your stay as memorable as it can be.
January: Road-trip through the Yucatán
As the Mayan Riviera fills up with name-brand resorts and restaurants, the Yucatán’s interior is the place to go for a taste of authentic colonial Mexico. While January is still considered high season, prices are significantly lower than during holiday months like December and March.
LOCAL’S TIP: John Powell of Urbano Rentals recommends lunch at Apoala, one of the city’s best restaurants. “It only costs about $6, including your drink,” he says, vs. about $35 a person for dinner.
February: Go skiing in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec
The U.S. dollar has risen 12% against the Canadian dollar since the beginning of 2015. Plus, Quebec’s premier mountain offers some of the best skiing on the East Coast at prices that are already about 30% less expensive than those of competitors like Killington in Vermont.
LOCAL’S TIP: Of the mountain’s 96 trails, be sure to hit Nansen, a 3.7-mile run that overlooks Lake Tremblant and the village.
March: Sip and stroll in Sonoma, Calif.
Napa Valley may get more buzz, but Sonoma is just as beautiful—and hotels can be about 40% cheaper, even in this quiet shoulder season. Another plus: “You’re more likely to chat with the winemaker in a tasting room and get prime reservations in popular restaurants” than during the summer, says Lauren Krause, owner of Beltane Ranch B&Band vineyard.
LOCAL’S TIP: Stop at the Dry Creek General Store, a local fixture in Healdsburg since 1881, for house-made pesto and fresh mozzarella panini ($10).
April: Enjoy small-town life in Greenville, S.C.
This former textile town is attracting star chefs, craft breweries, independent shops, and new hotels. USA Today calls the Blue Ridge Mountain haven “the perfect example of the new South.” Now is the time to go, before crowds—and prices—catch up to other Carolina culture capitals like Charleston, S.C., and Asheville, N.C.
LOCAL’S TIP: Join the crowds for free music on Main Street every Thursday and Friday night.
May: Hike and beachcomb on the island of Hawaii
Think you can’t afford a Hawaiian vacation? Try the Big Island in May, one of the cheapest months to travel there, as it’s after winter’s high season but before summer break. Last year flights to Kona International Airport were down 14%, according to Hopper.com. Bonus: Because fewer tourists visit in May than during the summer months, you’ll have an easier time finding a stretch of sand to call your own.
LOCAL’S TIP: Pacheco recommends Hawaii Volcanoes National Park ($15 per car for seven days), where you can walk through a lava tube and trek along a crushed-lava road to the ocean.
June: Enjoy early summer on Lake Champlain
While average temperatures in June (mid-70s) are similar to those in July and August, hotel rates are 10% cheaper and 12% less than in fall, according to hotel market data firm STR. Spring season flowers remain in bloom, making it a lovely time to visit.
LOCAL’S TIP: For a good value in Burlington, head to the Skinny Pancake for crepes, says travel writer Nina Fedrizzi. “Order the Jonny, which comes with pulled pork, caramelized onions, and Cabot cheddar cheese” ($11.50).
July: Sightsee in Gdansk, Poland
There’s nothing quite like visiting Europe in the summer, but peak-season prices can break the bank. Not so in Poland. BudgetYourTrip.com notes that even traveling to waterfront Gdansk costs about a third of travel to London or Paris.
LOCAL’S TIP: The best place to exchange money is at the “kantors” (currency-exchange offices); you’ll pay a lower commission than at banks or Western Unions.
August: Visit cloud forests in Costa Rica
During the “transition months” of May through August, deals are plenty and tourists are few, says Rob Harper, founder of Costa Rican Vacations (vacationscostarica.com). Sure, it rains, but storms tend to pass quickly, and some animals, like turtles and whales, are more in evidence.
LOCAL’S TIP: A night walk in Bosque Eterno de los Niños is one of the best wildlife hikes in all of Costa Rica, says Harper ($22). Watch for long-tailed olingos, owls, and tree frogs.
September: Get away to Chincoteague Island, Va.
Devoted visitors love September here, when temps stay in the high 70s but crowds dwindle and accommodation prices drop by 20% or more. There’s not a high-rise hotel or commercial boardwalk in sight on this laid-back barrier island. Instead you’ll enjoy open vistas, peaceful bike trails, placid inlets, and, on neighboring Assateague Island, a National Wildlife Refuge best known for its wild ponies.
LOCAL’S TIP: See the islands from the water on one of Daisey’s Island Cruises($30). You’ll spot dolphins and shorebirds as the captain fills you in on the region’s seafaring history.
October: Go leaf peeping in Michigan
It’s the end of high season, but you can still count on quiet roads, red-and-gold vistas, and waterfalls—almost 180 of ’em—in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Nicknamed the UP, this scenic forested corner offers fall foliage on the cheap: Hotels average $96 in October, according to STR, up to 38% less than in other popular leaf-peeping destinations like Lake Placid, N.Y., and Vermont.
LOCAL’S TIP: End the day with a pint at Marquette’s Ore Dock Brewing Co. Weekly specials are $1 off during happy hour (5 p.m. to 7 p.m.).
November: Explore the streets of Buenos Aires
The Argentinean peso has fallen more than 30% against the dollar in the past 14 months, putting the whole city effectively on sale. In November, approaching summer south of the equator, temperatures hover in the low 70s, an ideal time of year to explore Buenos Aires, which combines European-style architecture with sultry Latin flair.
LOCAL’S TIP: Buenos Aires is famous for its beef, but the best steak dinners can be surprisingly expensive. Instead, says Maita Barrenechea, founder of travel agency Mai10, try the small and lively Big Sur for a traditional lomito steak sandwich.
December: Get in the holiday spirit in Newport, R.I.
December may just be the City by the Sea’s best-kept secret. Sparkling white lights illuminate homes, shops, and restaurants; holiday traditions—blissfully lacking commercial overtones—abound. Best of all, the onetime summer playground of the country’s wealthiest families becomes affordable for the rest of us: Prices on hotels and meals fall by as much as 65% in winter.
LOCAL’S TIP: Buy tickets to see the Newport Nutcracker, a local tradition for 15 years. Patrons sit at two rows of tables; opt for the back row to save $15 (adults, $85; children $55).
