i DO like qpr jesslake! i don't have many specific headcanons or thoughts (especially ones that i haven't already posted/written about) but off the top of my head:

-they probably got together before either of them knew that queerplatonic relationships were A Thing. just like "i wanna be with you but i don't wanna be Dating. but like, fuck the rules that say we have to put our relationship into boxes"

-and they were *basically* already Together before they made it Official (this prolly happened a couple years post-canon)

-they sometimes say like "they're my partner" when asked about their relationship, but more often it's just "he's my jesse" and "they're my lake"

-similarly, they don't call each other pet names. lake's not much of a cutesy nickname person, but will occasionally call jesse stuff like dumbass (affectionate) like i do to some of my friends. jesse is USUALLY the type to make up fun nicknames for his loved ones but calling lake anything except their real name feels Wrong to him. but he says their name with such love that it might as well be a term of endearment

-they're pretty physically affectionate and aren't really shy about showing it. but it's less mushy snuggly type affection and more just. being basically joined at the hip and/or flopping on each other like two cats

-if you headcanon lake as getting adoptive/foster parents rather than living with jesse's family: these two are at each other's houses CONSTANTLY. extremely frequent sleepovers. their parents know better than to try to separate them

Because my only Jesslake/Book 2 brainrotting recently has been of the angsty variety (as can be seen by my previous posts), I'd like to propose a wholesome AU this time around: DND.

Not like, they're actually IN the game, they just play it together.

Mikayla loves DND and she decided to invite Tulip and her sibling to one of her games. Jesse was also there, as Mikayla had invited another person he was sorta kinda friends with. Lake doesn't know they're NB yet.

Lake decides to make a male knight character, and everyone says they need a healer so naturally that's what Jesse plays. At first Lake doesn't care, they don't even really know who they agreed to their twin's nerd shit. But little by little they start to get more attached to the game and to their character. They start to really enjoy who he is and the sort of rampant individualism he stands for despite still being an honorable knight. The character gets the reputation in the party for being a little reckless but ultimately reliable, which means Jesse's character has to stay near him A LOT because Lake keeps making him charge into battle with much gusto and little caution.

What REALLY brings Jesse's attention to them is when Lake so clearly falls in love with a random deer that was following them. Jesse did as well, and they brought it into the party and named it Alan Dracula (much to Lake's chagrin).

Because of the campaign, Jesse starts talking to Lake a lot outside of the game. Lake didn't usually have someone like that, who would talk to them and check in with them a lot. They talk about the characters and the story and game mechanics, and both of them get very passionate about it with each other.

Then the friend Jesse joined the campaign with started acting like a huge jerk, and Jesse kept defending him, which earned some scorn from Lake. However before long Jesse realized no one at the table was having fun as long as he was around, so he told him off, and Mikayla finally kicked him out of the table. For being someone who loved to fit in, doing something like that took guts, which Lake noted.

Lake had been playing as this guy for a while, and it only took so long for them to realize they felt the same about being called a guy as they did a girl, which caused them to do some soul searching. They came out to Jesse as NB first because over the months of playing and talking they knew he would be the least judgmental, and of course he was very supportive.

That's it. No angsty twist. Just kids bonding over a game.

been watching some infinity train video essays recently and come across a common criticism of book 2 that has absolutely floored me because it demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding about what book 2 even says about personhood and reality. i feel it’s relevant to point out that most of the people who have this criticism are also unaware or dismissive of the trans-coding of lake’s character, because like.... the critiques are a) ‘lake’s number being a reflection of jesse’s was a cop-out’ and b) ‘lake being a metal person in the real world doesn’t make any sense’. and it’s like.. you just watched an entire narrative about how arbitrary constructs of personhood designed to demean and marginalise people are Bad and Dumb and there will inevitably be people a system doesn’t accomodate for, who deserve accomodation on account of their existence, and your takeaway was ‘well they didn’t make the metal person a real person. they didn’t assimilate to the status quo in a bona fide capacity’. like what the fuck lol

to elaborate on what i mean; lake being a chrome person is an integral aspect of who they are and their journey is never a pinnochio-esque ‘i wanna be a real boy’ self-loathing misery-fest (book 2 said fuck your transmedicalism and also, hey, as a disabled person, nice). by book 2, lake is adamant that they are a person and merely wants to be treated as such. lake is treated as a second class citizen on the train because of arbitrary social structures designed to ‘maintain the balance’ between the prime and mirror world, as mace puts it. it’s a social construct presented as an innate, intrinsic truth of the world by corrupt authority figures; have i mentioned trans-coding yet? lake’s journey wouldn’t be anywhere near as impactful as it is if they constantly lamented the literal make-up of their being, if they had to relinquish a fundamental aspect of their all-important identity to ‘truly be a person’. like, lake is not Becoming a person; they are a person, and they’re escaping a system that falsely refutes that.

this is why lake’s number is actually a genius writing choice, and very definitley not a cop-out. lake’s number is created on account of their physical being, can literally only exist in the way that it does because lake is reflective. to be told ‘you are a reflection, so you can’t have a number’, and then get a number not in spite of being a reflection but because of literally being reflective..... trans-coding. and also the only way to do a meaningful narrative about personhood. any notion that lake is not already fully a person on account of.... you know, existing and stuff undermines every aspect of their character and it’s genuinely baffling to me that some people don’t get that.

like, it’s apparent that the train (an artificial construct) cannot give a denizen (social construct) a number (also a construct, but an important one in the social system). it literally starts collapsing in on itself when lake and jesse apparently invent t4t in the number car, because it has not considered how to accomodate for people who exist outside of a narrow scope or binary (haha). to have lake somehow (?? how would you even do this lol like tell me your alt ending if you’re gonna prattle this nothing criticism) Become a passenger and get their number that way undermines their incredibly powerful assertion, again and again, ‘i am a person,’ ‘i’m my own person who is getting off this train’. because that says that this fucked up social system is in some way objectively correct and lake has to assimilate to it, when it has been actively violent against them, and dehumanises every single denizen on the train. which we have been told the entirety of book 2 is innately bad.

and also, it adds so much to the jesslake dynamic that i think evidently goes over certain people’s heads. lake and jesse are both the titular ‘cracked reflection’, both attempting to establish a sense of identity independent from others, and that’s a big factor in their closeness and understanding of one another. jesse’s second number scrolls from irrational number to complex number back to irrational number (square root of two i’ll get to you) because his problem— which is in turn lake’s problem— has threatened and cracked the train’s rigid system. it cannot comprehend it. jesse and lake together essentially take a shit on the train because like yeah, lake’s number is ‘just’ a reflection, but that is literally the point. oh my god why can no one understand basic symbolism like throughout the show we see lake’s face reflected in their own hands and we go ouogfoghgou i seeeeee they don’t have a number on their hand so we see them instead, yes yes personhood and identity i see. but the second people see a reflection of a number they can’t grasp what is simple but powerful in its meaning????

lake is a person. because they are a person. number is ‘proof’ of personhood on train but the thing that we’ve always seen in lake’s hand is them, the reflection of a reflection, and that’s their personhood, and now they’re cheating the system with another reflection like hello!!!!!!!!! they’re not meant to assimilate into the system literally anyone who thinks that is stupid and shouldn’t be allowed opinions. i am so sorry but holy fuck book 2 was like ‘lake’s personhood is innate and has always been there and they do not have to assimilate into a cruel system to escape it nor do they have to relinquish who they are to obtain freedom because there is nothing objectively flawed about their personhood, only objectively flawed perceptions of them by others’ and some people were like ‘ok but. the gender binary is real obviously’ and it’s like did you miss the bit where we brutally murdered the two cops emblematic of... well, cops, and also arbitrary oppressive social structures that are peddled as fact. holy shit. book 2 sweetie im so sorry that cis people don’t understand you like i do.

just to expand on that point a little more analytically; i’ve seen some people say that they thought lake’s number was a cop-out because it was ‘cheating the system’, but you’re sort of meant to think that. the train’s system is innately flawed, this is something the show makes apparent throughout its books. lake is cheating a system they cannot legitimately win at. ‘well couldn’t any denizen just write a number on their hand and ask one-one for an exit?’ idk maybe. i hope some of them try it and succeed. the train is an arbitrary construct, it is conducted, its judgement is not objective or perfect. why the hell should lake play by the rules when the rules are literally ‘you aren’t a person lol <3′. you guys are spouting some alarmingly right-wing rhetoric if you posit arguments like these. ‘oh but one-one can’t be evil though :(’ i don’t think one-one is evil, i think he’s a mostly well-intentioned robot that doesn’t fully grasp the complexity of what he’s attempted to create a clinical system to ‘solve’.

final point: if you think lake should’ve like?? become flesh??? when they got off the train, first of all you hate comedy and second of all, read above. this is not pinnochio!!!!!!!! the only ‘problem’ with being a reflection is the artificial construct of what ‘being a reflection’ means, and lake has rejected that, and they’re made of chrome, and that’s a fact, and they consistently utiliise that aspect of their identity to further their journey to the point of their exit from the train literally being manifested via the reflective nature of their hand. they are disproving everything that everyone says about them not by rejecting that aspect of their identity but embracing it. ‘you’d just go into the prime world with your... metal skin and, what? high school? prom?’ yes motherfucker!!!!!! suck on it!!!!!!!!!!!! some of you need to work a little harder to um.... Understand what a text is saying, and Comprehend subtext. again, this is not pinnochio!!!! good god. fuck me.

Honestly, for a car idea, now I can’t stop picturing there being some play on words with the phrase “smart cookie.” Like maybe a school or laboratory themed car with pastry denizens, and the famous Summa Cum Laude/head scientist is some sort of cookie. That, and or a car where that used to be the case, but they either got burnt out “gifted kid” style or went through an identity crisis and mental breakdown from something involving prior passengers/the nature of the puzzle of their car challenging the concept of them being ‘a smart cookie.’

Alternately, an inverted aquarium car where the entrance door dumps you into a zoo enclosure pit, and there are giant windows separating you from a ‘watery outside world’ where gawking aquatic species denizens want to take candid pictures of passengers for their family vacation to the Zoo before you can leave.

Could be some fun stuff there methinks.

I've seen a lot of stuff using fish or aquariums for cars, I think, so I did a spin on it to make it a zoo. I didn't actually finish this one bc I forgot what I wanted the ending to be, but I hope y'all can still enjoy it!

(I didn't have any ideas for the Smart Cookie car but it's SUCH a cool concept, I hope I or someone else uses it in the future)

The sign read no photography and MT figured it was about all the luck they would get. Jesse entered the car first to make sure it was safe, per usual. Only to find an empty zoo exhibit in which Jesse was the animal on display. Curious, MT had followed him and Alan right after. The door had closed behind them too quickly for either of them to backtrack.

In no less than five minutes even MT realized that their was no winning with this car. It sucked. Clearly the denizens lacked complete respect for the rules of their own car. And every new animal left MT more on edge than the last!

After hours of wandering in circles looking for any sign of an exit, they'd eventually decided a break was in order.

A pair of giraffes cooed at them from the other side of the cage, trying to lean through the bars and get their attention. One of them reached into its coat, glancing around to see if anyone else was looking. The only other creature was a hippo that was half asleep.

“What are they doing?" Jesse squinted. Sitting in the middle of the exhibit left him too far away to make out the details. It whipped out a camera, snapping a few quick pictures before stuffing it back into its pocket as if nothing had happened.

"Hey!" He pointed an accusatory finger, gesturing at the sign that MT had noted upon first entering. "It says no pictures!"

MT shuffled behind him, a bundle of anxious energy. They had been quiet after their initial reaction to the car. There was a small stream in the enclosure, but it was tiny and off to the side. It posed no real threat. That hadn't eased their nerves in the slightest.

MT crossed their arms and came to stand by Jesse's side before shooting a glare at the sneaky photographer. "I'm breaking that camera on my way out.”

Unbothered by their threats the other giraffe pulled out their own camera, taking their sweet time to take pictures of the two of them.

Frustrated, MT stomped towards them. Being sure to make good on their words. "I did not escape the mirror world just to get trapped in some cage like an animal!"

"No offense Alan!" Jesse amended delicately. The deer was grazing near the stream, completely unperturbed by the scene.

MT’s fist brushed against the metal of their enclosure, an electric jolt arcing from the metal into them painfully. They stumbled back from it, nearly crumbling to their knees as they clutched the sore spot. Jesse ran to their side, placing his hands hesitantly on their shoulder in an attempt to help. "Are you okay?"

They waited to respond, their vision still wobbly and bright from the shock. They shook their hand out, as if to dispel any remaining electricity as they settled back into themselves. "I'm just- tired."

Intrigued by the sudden commotion the giraffes took a whole slew of pictures, babbling to one another. MT growled. If they couldn't punch them then they'd find another way. Picking up a fist sized rock they launched it at the two instead.

The rock fared better than their hand, sailing through the cage and almost nipping one in the shoulder. Disgruntled, they put their cameras away.

MT's eyes never left the giraffes as they finally started to make their way to some other exhibit that this makeshift zoo must have had to offer. They was more than relieved to watch them go, but they knew more would take their place in time.

At last, true to their words, MT sank into Jesse's side. Resting a good amount of their weight on him. It wasn't entirely unusual. They knew they'd been getting handsier and handsier with every passing car. They could only hope he didn't mind- well. MT knew he didn't. Jesse leaned into every touch like he was starved, but MT couldn't help the way it made their stomach squirm. It was all so new to them. Everything was new to them.

As sweet as it was to stay pressed into Jesse's side, hiding against his shoulder for some sense of privacy, it couldn't last. MT was heavy. No amount of swim practice was going to keep him upright as they sagged into him, as much as they was loathsome to move.

"Do you wanna sit down?"

MT had the decency not to point out how out of breath he sounded.

Jesse shifted, moving deeper into the enclosure. Alan Dracula trotted behind them as if to keep an eye on his two fawns. His hand was feather light against their wrist, but he never broke the contact. MT was thankful for it.

There wasn't much peace and quiet to be had in this car. No cave or burrow to hide in. Even here they were still clearly visible to passing denizens. "Is this okay?"

Taking in their surroundings, MT sighed. "Yeah, this will have to do."

"Just close your eyes," He prompted, making space so that they could sit beside him.

MT blatantly ignored the extra room, and made theirself at home lined up next to him, shoulder to ankle. Jesse always felt so warm, it drew MT into him. Clicking together like two magnets. Jesse shivered, but if MT's metal skin bugged him, he didn't say anything.

They did close their eyes. Forehead lulling familiarly into the crook of Jesse's neck. They wiggled their nose as his hair tickled their face.

MT had never sat so close to him- or anyone. It sapped their energy in a way that was oddly pleasant. They didn't know how to explain it, but his presence left them pliant in a way they never could be when they'd been exploring on their own. If anything they should have been so hyperly aware of every point of contact that they couldn't bear to sleep at all. They found themselves drifting off either way.

Jesse rested his head atop MT's. Wiggling his arm to wrap it around their waist to keep their dead weight propped against him.

Alan Dracula sniffled at them curiously before snorting softly. As he laid behind the two of them, it became impossible to stay awake. Sleep had never come easily with danger lurking just behind every door. Even this car wasn't ideal. But they had each other. And they were as safe as they could be. It was enough.

At the end of the Toad Car, Jesse hugged Lake when his number went down. This was the first time ever that someone hugged Lake for something they did instead of them having to reflect it.

This verse also reminds me of the scene where Jesse and Lake were singing the Travel friends song in the Parasite Car. 4. Misguided Ghosts Full speed ahead Oh, you are not useless We are just Misguided ghosts Travelin' endlessly

This reminds me of the fic called ''Enchanted to meet you'', written by @justanotheryellowsoul and @elibethquin Jesse having to find his unfinished business before he can go to the light, and Lake helping him with it. As the fic goes on it's getting harder for both of them to let go. None of this was meant to last forever, as much as they want to.

what are your fav book 2 fics/fics regarding jesse and lake (any interpretations of their relationship is cool)?

oh jeepers, this is a bit hard to answer because i've read or at least clicked on almost every fic on ao3 about these two, and liked at least half of them, and a lot of them have kinda blurred together but

first one to come to mind is "you had all the answers, but no human touch" by mandaree1 (this one lives in my head rent free, it's a really good character study)

second is "loud and clear" by weevilo707 (tbh a lot of this author's work is great)
