This is truly an amazing photo: The Long Island Motor Parkway (AKA Vanderbilt Parkway) in 1908 with the Manhattan skyline in the background. Built in 1908 and running from Queens to Ronkonkoma, Long Island, historians have called it the first road in the country built specifically for automobiles. The privately built toll road featured overpasses and bridges with a toll of $2 when it opened – limiting the roadway for wealthy men wishing to race their new cars. The parkway was closed and absorbed by the state in 1938. Part of the trail still exists as a bike trail in Queens. #longislandhistory #brooklyn #longislandmotorparkway #longisland #brooklyn #robertmoses #vanderbiltparkway #longislandexpressway #lie #bqe #brooklynqueensexpressway #nyhistory #hychistory #urbanism #urbanplanning #thepowerbroker #architecture #urbandesign #cityplaning #urbanplanning #vanderbiltmansion #ronkonkoma (at Queens, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfrN-ZKOFWz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

sharon had come home from a long day. she worked her normal job the one that she tells james about, but then had some underground stuff she needed to take care of so by the time she was home it was fairly late. she was making herself a meal when james came out to see her and she offers him a sweet smile as she normally would and continues to make dinner. feeling his arms around her she laughs and tries to shrug it off and not make much of it. but his words make her realize she needs to stop for a moment. she laughs and puts the spoon down doing as he said and stopped moving. she wraps her arms around him and hugs him tight. it makes her regret what she was doing before she got home. a small sigh leaves her body as they stay like this for a few moments. “i guess you missed me.” she teases before looking to him with a sweet smile. “i missed you too.” she admits.

10.21.20 Lunchtime drawing: The Power Broker by Robert Caro, the ubiquitous-on-Zoom-bookshelf backgrounds book of the pandemic. It’s also part of my NYC book collection in my studio that I periodically reference for the text that accompany drawings.

West Side Improvement park and Henry Hudson Parkway construction, 1937. The Parkway was an early project of master builder Robert Moses who envisioned covering the New York Central tracks to build a great highway along the water surrounded by parks. At a cost of $109 million, twice the price of the Hoover Dam which was built at the same time, the project was praised by critics, but some questioned the decision to place the highway along the waterfront, creating a barrier between the park and Hudson River.
