The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)
Tumblr media
The Peanut Butter Falcon is warm and endearing. It quickly wins you over, and largely without the use of cheap tricks - which would’ve been a death-knell for this kind of fable. The big-screen debut of Zack Gottsagen, this story is perfectly suited to him and establishes the man as a charming actor you'd love to see more of. Unfortunately, there are few parts for performers with Down syndrome, even ones like him. Maybe if enough people see “The Peanut Butter Falcon” that could change.
Zak, a 22-year-old with Down syndrome (Zack Gottsagen) dreams of meeting his idol, The Salt Water Redneck (Thomas Haden Church) and becoming a wrestler. Escaping from the old folks home where the state has placed him, he stows away on a small boat owned by another man on the run, Tyler (Shia LaBeouf). The two strike a friendship and begin traveling towards Florida, with Zak’s caretaker, Eleanor (Dakota Johnson) not far behind.
Two runaways on a small boat traveling down the river, encountering various bits of Americana along the way? Zak and Tyler might as well be traveling down the Mississippi and calling themselves Huckleberry Finn and Jim. Rather than swap out one name for another, however, The Peanut Butter Falcon (named after the wrestling persona Zak creates for himself) captures the story's enduring spirit. Along the way, the pair have an array of weird little adventures with the kind of people most of us only encounter one or two of in our lifetimes. When done right like this, anyone can recognize themselves in these characters.
Directors Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz (who also wrote the screenplay) get the little details right. When Eleanor walks into a ragtag corner store and asks those present if they’ve seen Zak, they have to try hard to prevent themselves from drooling. She’s dressed down but she’s still obviously the prettiest woman for the near 100 miles. When Zak and Tyler first meet, the troubled fisherman doesn’t want anything to do with the runaway but the time they spend together makes Tyler see in the fellow misfit pieces of his deceased brother (Jon Bernthal). The bond they develop is a unique kind of friendship you hold onto dearly. In some ways, the film’s villains are the worst part of this story. They interrupt the journey the men are on, and you want more than anything for them to reach their destination.
The Peanut Butter Falcon is southern fable with moments of movie magic but it feels authentic. The treatment of Zak is particularly well done. It’s a little movie that does things no big picture would have the guts to do and I admire its willingness to go there. You'll find it refreshing and novel. While aspects of it are unconventional, the reaction you'll have towards it is the kind you’ve treasured many times before and will want to experience again. (Theatrical version on the big screen, October 3, 2019)

The Peanut Butter Falcon
Have you ever come across a film that speaks to you, that makes you question your values, captures your soul and heightens your imagination? For me, ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’ is that film. It has the ability to help you change the way you see life.
The film is about Zak, a young man with Down syndrome who escapes from an assisted living facility where he lives, to follow his dream of training to be a professional wrestler. While on the run he makes an unlikely friendship with a fisherman who is also running away.
As the two men embark on an adventure to find Zak’s wrestling hero, they form an unlikely bond, a bond that turns into a beautiful friendship, whilst being chased by Zak’s social worker, whose intention is to send Zak back into care. As the story unfolds, she begins to question her own values through Zak’s eyes, and decides to take Zak’s journey with him.
Just like the rest of us, Zak has dreams. He wants to be treated with inclusivity in the same way as everyone else; he wants to be accepted in a world that isn’t always accepting of people who are different, and who deal with a disability. The Peanut Butter Falcon not only reminds us of disability in its wider context, but it also shows us there can be kindness, compassion and understanding for those of us who deal with a disability.
I resonated with this wonderful film for two reasons; I too live with a disability and because it reminds me of the stigmas and prejudices I, like others with a disability, continue to face in our everyday lives, in what is an able-bodied world. The reality for anyone with a physical, mental or emotional disability is that we don’t automatically fit in, although we hope others will allow us to.
This film highlights disability and what it feels like to live with one, it also highlights that disability shouldn’t define us. It serves to remind us that we are all the same, that each of us should strive to ensure everyone is inclusive, not exclusive, and to bring understanding where disability may not always be seen in this way.
For me, this film not only captured my imagination with its story of adventure, but it also tugged at my heart strings. It shows us we can become kinder and be better people, and that we can all choose to make a difference to those who simply need that difference to be made.

#ThePeanutButterFalcon ***1/2 (Out of 4). I finally caught up with this flick and I feel like it should not of taken me this long. 2019 was such a great year for Shia Labeouf with this flick and the great “Honey Boy.
