the ot4: house of the dragon au

this kind of spiraled out of control and would obviously need a shitton of work to smooth everything out but here's what i (and annie) put together quickly. a lot is inspired by the book and show but a lot had to be changed around to make this work. also the hp canon titles and social statuses are waaay different in this one.

when king aegar I targaryen names his second son his heir instead of his eldest, the seeds of civil war are sown. aegar's choice is heavily influenced by a prophecy passed down in his family since the days of old valyria, and all signs point to his younger son being the prince that was promised. or so aegar believes...

prince elyan grew up as the prince of dragonstone, destined to one day rule over westeros. but his father deemed him too rash, too unpredictable to ever sit the iron throne, so he named elyan's little brother theodric as his heir on his sixteenth nameday. theo has no taste for ruling but he wanted to make his father happy so he obliged. when king aegar dies only a few short months later, the realm is torn asunder. many lords and ladies still deem elyan the rightful heir, while some, such as the hightowers, lannisters, and baratheons support theodric's claim (maybe because they respect aegar, maybe because they think theo will be easier to control than his brother...)

elyan is a formidable warrior and commands the loyalty of many, especially men of the city watch in king's landing, whom he personally oversaw for a time. he's charismatic and politically savvy but also vicious and cruel, often jumping headfirst into danger. theo, on the other hand, is studious and prefers to keep to himself. his father believes him to be the one of whom the prophecy spoke of and it could be argued that he has a calmer demeanor than his brother, but in truth, theodric can be just as fearsome and unpredictable.

henry hightower grew up in king's landing, where his father thomas served as the hand of the king for both king elyris I targaryen, and king aegar I targaryen. he's not a renowned warrior and prefers books to swords. he loves riding though, and is an exceptional horseman. when war erupts, henry ends up on the opposing side to elyan, with whom he has been in love with for years. he has to choose between duty and love as he finds himself increasingly friendless in the city he once called home.

malcolm stark is the new lord of winterfell after the sudden death of his father. though he is young, he's determined to look after his people as winter approaches. in the middle of preparations, king aegar dies and war starts brewing in the south. malcolm's father alexander once swore an oath of loyalty to king aegar and his then-heir, prince elyan but now the succession has been changed. malcolm must decide whether to march his men south to defend prince elyan's rightful claim or to stay in the north and face the oncoming winter.

lady primrose baratheon is the only surviving child of lord vincent gray and lady victoria baratheon. she stands to inherit her mother's claim to storm's end but lady victoria's claim was contested on many fronts already, and she only held onto it because she was already married and with child at the time of her brother's death. the lords of the stormlands were hoping she would have a son and put such foolish things as women inheriting storm's end to rest. when, despite years of effort, primrose remained the only living child of her parents, tensions in the stormlands started to brew again. prim's position is precarious and now she has a war to navigate. house baratheon is sworn to defend king theodric but elyan is one of primrose's oldest friends. when her mother dies a few weeks into the war, primrose technically has the power to shift her house's allegiance, but can she convince her lords to follow her lead?

elyan, theo, henry, and prim all spent a considerable amount of time together in king's landing

there would definitely be pressure from the councils of both sides to put the other to sword so the war doesn't rear its head again but do the brothers actually want to kill each other?

elyan and henry are gay and in love and take romantic flights on dragonback over the crownlands until the war tears them apart :( the whole affair was doomed from the start but now it's EXTRA doomed

eventually malcolm and prim join the war and meet and fall in love BUT there's a huge issue because primrose has to marry some suitable minor lord from the stormlands (who preferrably has older brothers so he doesn't have the pressure of carrying on the family name) and not the frigging lord of winterfell, warden of the north!!! her liege lords don't want some stark bossing them around. if the two manage to make it work and get married then who's gonna inherit storm's end? who's gonna inherit winterfell? we just won't know...

estelle is The Stark At Winterfell while mal is off to war

lots more dragons would be involved than what is mentioned here. theo has a dragon called scrambles called something metal like bloodfyre i'm sure

the other houses like the velaryons and the lannisters would also be involved heavily but i decided to not go as far as to start assigning other characters or i'd never be able to get this out lol

although the slytherins might be velaryons in this, so kerina is a velaryon, and the current lord of driftmark is either kerina's dad or brother

i have no idea who would eventually win although the odds are stacked against theo pretty hard at the minute, poor guy...

this isn't like a simple elian = rhaenyra (obvs he's more like daemon anyway), theo = aegon II, henry = alicent etc thing. while some characters do fill the roles of actual characters from hotd, it isn't exactly a working comparison. that being said, i love the ottohightowerification of thomas of alderly.

Bard Quest Adventure 2: The Missing Bards (parts 1 & 2)

The band travelled to the town of Hialeah, Istanore. Some of the bards shopped at the local stores and found a few nice pieces of clothing and jewelry for themselves before their evening show. 

The Dick Squad (reminder: my bards chose this for their band name) was supposed to open for a band called the Dekufteg Dollies, but the two-piece band had not arrived by the time Dick Squad had to start their set. Their crew members watched out for any sign of the second act of the night. The Dekufteg Dollies didn’t show. Dick Squad agreed to play a second set for the audience, most of whom simply hoped to be entertained for the whole night, regardless of who played. 

The bards, worried about the no-show band, so they went to bed at a decent hour and hit the road early in the morning, hoping to come across some evidence of the missing musicians’ whereabouts. They noticed an ambush before they could be attacked, and struck first. Together, the band and the crew managed to knock out and tie up every last one of the bandits. 

Fergie (@sikizu) warmed up the interrogation process. Ari (@wingedscribe) detected one of the thugs’ thoughts and picked up some skeletal information; the bandits’ employer was someone named Grey, and he was not going to be happy that they failed so miserably in their mission. This was when Theo (@murderandcoffee) stepped up to bat and frightened the thug, who spilled all the information Theo could get out of him within the effect’s duration. 

The bandits’ boss had them all just as hired hands -- no one really knew what the guy’s goals were. Grey is a human man with grey hair, an equally grey beard, and a scar on one of his cheekbones, and the guy was built like a tank. The bandits kidnapped two bards off the road the day before and took them to the abandoned Granite Keep. The thug had no idea what the reason was for that, but it wasn’t really his job to ask questions. He described various entrances into the Keep and how to get there from the road. At the very end of the interrogation, Theo squeezed the thug’s mother’s name out of him, just as a last “fuck you” before the frightening effect ended. 

June Steelboots, Norbert Steelboots, and Lix Boarchaser -- the band’s crew members -- took the tied-up bandits back into town to be delivered swiftly to the local law enforcement while the Dick Squad and their manager, Loren Gilly, planned to infiltrate the Keep and save the Dekufteg Dollies.

The bards circled the Keep, and Kallista (@thekittykat7) found a cellar door -- the most mysterious of the entrances the thug mentioned to them. After Kallista and Ari both failed to open the old doors, Demyan (not on Tumblr) offered his help and proceeded to rip the doors off their freaking hinges. The band marched on into the cellar and through the tunnel leading back to the Keep.

They discovered a strange (unoccupied) alchemical lab where they found a few strange potions and materials and promptly pocketed some of them before continuing down the dark hall. The band entered a dungeon with several cells. They found keys and freed Dru, a somewhat-lanky half-orc who is half of the Dekufteg Dollies. Next, they freed an unfamiliar bard named Vedas (@xylocept) and Brynne, the red-haired half-elf (the other member of the Dekufteg Dollies).

As some of the party members unloaded another cell with all of Brynne, Dru, and Vedas’ supplies, others broke into a vault where Brynne and Dru’s money was taken and deposited. After maneuvering around two mimics to the best of their ability, Theo, Ari, and Kallista cleaned out the bandits’ funds. I would like to note that one mimic was distracted by a quiet jam session from Vedas, Kallista, and Ari, and the other was eventually charmed by the effects of Ari’s Unearthly Chorus.

The majority of the band waited downstairs as I, the DM, played the themes to James Bond’s Goldeneye, Mission Impossible, and Pink Panther, and Ari and Dru invisibly snuck all the way up to the top floor of the damaged Keep to look for who knows what. They found a secret library in the old master bedroom (Dru snuck some books out of there), and a much-less-secret library. The latter was occupied by a man matching the description of Grey, who was marking up the margins of a tome. Dru created a distracting clamor on the far side of the floor, which Grey rose to investigate. This gave Ari just enough time to snatch the tome from the desk and take off back towards the dungeon. 

The band high-tailed it out of the Keep, and met up with Norbert, June, and Lix on the road. They investigated the tome and found it to be a research journal (with some personal tidbits) written in Elvish by someone named Alwyn Goldcrest. Grey had made it a decent way into the journal, circling some passages, crossing others out, and adding notes for variations on spells and potion ingredients in the margins. 

With this, the band quickly made their way towards their next destination, leaving Grey and his hired thugs dumbfounded and in the dust. 

Part 1 of Adventure 3 should be written and posted here sometime soon!

the goldcrests; theodric goldcrest

theodric was born during the 13th century, and the night of his birth was illuminated by a great comet. this had been foretold and thus great things were expected of the boy. his father aegar favoured theodric over his older brother elyan and all his life he was treated as the chosen one, the one to finally bring the goldcrest rebellion to its glorious conclusion. this favouritisim drove a wedge between theo and elyan, who felt ignored and replaced by their father. theodric didn't show any particular talent for leadership and insted wished to gain the approval of his brother, much to the annoyance of both elyan and their father. like others of his family, theo also had the benefits of his great grandmother's blood magic that made his bloodline long-lived and capable of unusually strong magic. before theodric could fullfill his grand destiny, his family was attacked by a group of vampires. while his mother kerina was killed, he himself and his brother were turned into vampires. their father searched in vain for a cure, and eventually put the boys under an enchanted sleep so no one would find out about their vampirism. aegar was slain in battle and the boys remained under the enchantment, until they were woken up by the blood of their distant relative proteus gaunt, some 600 years later. the brothers started going by the names elian and theo goldcrest, after their grandfather elyris's old epithet. they realized they had to put their differences aside as they found themselves in a completely different world than the one they'd fallen asleep in. they went back to school and began to search for an artifact their father had created, a crown to grant its wearer powers beyond imagination. theo was not as influential or personable as elian could be (and knew they needed to be to achieve their goals), so he rarely kept up with any of his mortal connections. he felt disconnected from the wizrding world, and thus, during the 1920s and 30s, theo was working together with a radical by the name of adam brynn, who was trying to further the rights of squibs and expose magic to muggles, although eventually his ideology turned to destroying all of wizardkind. theo didn't agree despite his vampirism and the two became enemies. he didn't want to kill brynn, though, since he had feelings for him. eventually brynn's movement was defeated and he disappeared, presumably changing his name and living the rest of his life among the muggles. theo chose not to look for him. years passed, and theo and elian didn't age. instead, they continued their search of the crown, going by several different identities. in the 21st century they returned to hogwarts after finding out that the secrets hidden at hogwarts could help them locate their long-lost family heirloom. while at school, theo met john arthur, the relative and doppelgänger of his old nemesis brynn. theo began to solve the mystery of why they looked so alike, and eventually grew rather fond of john who was nothing like his ancestor, but actually a good person. the two began a relationship and theo eventually turned john into a vampire as well. he also ended up reconciling with his brother and they were able to be a family again.

"John, I'm not wearing this," said Theo. He was holding a quidditch jumper with only little bit of disdain, to his credit. His own clothes were currently soaking wet after a brilliant idea of going for a midnight flight and getting caught in a rain storm.

"Well, I suppose you can walk back like that. Or naked," replied John. He was wearing a decidedly annoying smirk. Theo sighed and stripped off of his wet shirt. John's smile widened.

"Shut up," said Theo.

"I didn't say anything!"

"You were going to."

"I was not!"

Grumbling, Theo pulled the jumper on. "Gryffindor," he said, with a considerable amount of disdain. "My great-grandfather would kill himself out of shame."
