Rowoon Reveals Why He Chose ‘The Matchmakers’ as His Next Historical K-Drama

Rowoon, the rising star of historical K-dramas, has opened up about his decision to join the cast of ‘The Matchmakers’, a new romantic comedy set in Joseon era. The actor shared his thoughts on the genre, his co-star, and his character in a recent interview.

Rowoon’s Challenge: Comedy in Historical Setting

Rowoon is no stranger to historical K-dramas. He recently starred in ‘The King’s Affection’, a fantasy romance about a princess who disguises herself as a prince. The drama was a hit with viewers and critics, earning him praise for his acting skills and chemistry with Park Eun Bin.

He chose ‘The Matchmakers’, a comedy that follows the adventures of two young widows who become matchmakers for lonely singles in Joseon society. I wanted to challenge myself in the comedy genre. I actually think comedy is the most difficult genre. It was a genre that I wanted to try. Rowoon said that he was drawn to the script of ‘The Matchmakers’ because it was funny and refreshing. He also liked the character of Shim Jung Woo, a Confucian scholar who has a lot of influence but also a lot of problems. Shim Jung Woo is very different from me in real life. He is very strict and serious, but he also has a cute and clumsy side. He is very loyal and sincere, but he also gets into trouble because of his principles. I thought it would be fun to play him. Rowoon added that he had an easier time adjusting to the historical setting because he had already experienced it in ‘The King’s Affection’. He said that he learned a lot from his previous drama and applied it to his new role.

Rowoon’s Co-Star: Cho Yi Hyun

Rowoon also expressed his excitement to work with Cho Yi Hyun, who plays Jung Soon Deok, the female lead of ‘The Matchmakers’. Jung Soon Deok is a young widow who has a bright and cheerful personality. She teams up with Shim Jung Woo to help other widows find love again.

He said that she was very friendly and professional, and that they had a good rapport. She is very talented and charming. She has a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and she always makes the atmosphere lively. We have a lot of fun filming together. Rowoon also praised Cho Yi Hyun’s acting skills, saying that she was able to portray the emotions and expressions of her character very well. He said that he was looking forward to showing their chemistry on screen. We have a lot of scenes where we bicker and argue, but we also have some sweet moments. 📙 The Matchmaker 🖋️ Saman Shad ➡️ Synopsis 💗💗💗💗💗 A wonderful heartwarming love story set in my own backyard! I love this to bits from the very easy read, all the recognisable settings, to the guaranteed HEA. There were many things that are discussions-worthy too, especially as this story is totally immersed in culture. I don't read very many romcoms but I found this very enjoyable and actually unputdownable. I enjoyed that characters are of mature age (in their 30s) who have their own issues but had real good friends who helped them AND even seek professional help! They seem like sensible people most of the time but we all have our ups and downs so they also have their silly moments. Yet, these flaws are what made them and their love story even more vibrantly alive. A fabulous debut and I'm looking forward to her next book. Hidup itu lucu. Percaya, deh. Kalau nggak, mungkin hanya hidupku saja yang lucu sampai-sampai aku ingin menertawainya. Karena ini konyol sekali. Sungguh.

Oke, itu bohong. Sebenarnya aku tidak bisa tertawa. Karena jika ada yang ingin kulakukan, itu jelas bukan tersenyum. Yang ingin kulakukan hanyalah menjerit dari jendela apartemenku dan membiarkan orang-orang mendengarnya. Tapi aku belum siap menanggung malu.

Jangankan menanggung malu, memanggung hidup sendiri saja sudah susah setengah mampus.

Bukannya mau sombong nih, tapi aku termasuk orang yang rajin bangun pagi. Tapi mulai hari ini kebiasaan itu rasanya ingin aku hilangkan saja. Ingin rasanya tubuh ini tetap berbaring dan membiarkan gravitasi tempat tidur menahan diri untuk beranjak, kemudian bangun 4 jam lagi hingga mendapat banyak missed call, atau mungkin SMS yang kira-kira isinya begini:

Km lama banget. PA nya ganti aja kalo gitu.

Yeah, I wish. Nyatanya SMS itu tidak kutemukan. Aku tidak bangun kesiangan. Dan aku tidak dipecat.

Aneh ya? Aku malah lebih kelihatan seperti anak baru lulus kuliah yang menolak pekerjaan padahal sudah ditawari. Mencari pekerjaan itu susah memang, tapi pekerjaan yang begini membuatku ingin mengundurkan diri saja.

Kalau bisa sih, aku sudah melakukan itu sejak ditawari. Tapi, nyatanya aku bukan ditawari. Tapi dipaksa.

Jadi sebenarnya aku kerja atau jadi kuli ya?

Bagaimanapun, intinya hanya satu. Aku tetap harus menjalaninya. Sudah nasib. Lagi pula ini pilihanku—sulit untuk mengatakannya sebagai pilihan meskipun nyatanya aku tidak dibiarkan memilih, bahkan kehabisan opsi. Tapi di sisi lain, aku melakukannya karena Sena. Dia sudah banyak membantuku, jadi sekarang giliranku.

Yeah, this probably the most cliche thing in my life. Balas budi. Tapi, serius, aku tahu Sena bahkan layak meminta satu organ dalamku, walau dia pasti tidak akan melakukan itu.

Sambil mengeringkan rambut, mengambil ponsel yang sebelumnya kuletakkan di tempat tidur. Ada satu chat yang masuk di sana. Chat LINE dari Sena.

Aku tersenyum begitu membaca pesannya, tapi tidak bisa menahan diri untuk menggeleng. Bisa-bisanya dia malah mengirimku pesan dengan isi yang konyol begitu.

Nanti sore gue dateng ok?

Pada akhirnya hanya itu yang bisa aku kirimkan. Hanya doa. Hanya doa dengan keinginan yang tidak bisa kusampaikan. Bahkan untuk menyemangati pun, aku tidak bisa sembarangan. Sena yang mengatakan itu, memintanya langsung padaku.Jadi aku hanya bisa tersenyum, kembali meletakkan ponsel di tempat tidur dan kembali bersiap-siap.

Menggantikan peran Sena memang bukan hal yang mudah, meskipun cara bekerjanya kurang lebih mirip. Aku sudah dua tahun menjadi sekretaris di perusahaan konstruksi, sementara Sena jadi personal assistant untuk beberapa agensi musik ternama. Jelas pekerjaan Sena lebih dari apa yang aku kerjakan, karena urusannya bukan hanya di ruang kantor. Tak jarang banyak yang meremehkan pekerjaannya, tapi aku selalu tahu itu passion Sena. Ketika dia menjelaskan bagaimana kesehariannya, aku tahu dia menyukainya. Dia menikmati kegiatan yang sering membuatnya lelah.

Kami berdua memang dua sisi koin yang berbanding terbalik. Selama 3 tahun bekerja, aku masih tidak bisa menjelaskan pekerjaanku dengan semangat yang sama dengan Sena, tidak bisa bersenang-senang dan menghargai hidup seperti yang Sena lakukan.

Ini mungkin kedengaran dramatis, tapi dunia jauh lebih membutuhkan orang seperti Sena, who knows what she wants and chase after it, a person who will do everything with her heart. Aku memang bukan Sena, tapi paling tidak, aku akan mencoba membantu sampai dia kembali. Dan dipecat jelas bukan hal yang akan membantu.

Begitu siap dengan skinny jeans, onesie putih dengan logo Hardrock Cafe dan outer panjang setengah lengan warna biru pastel, aku duduk untuk memoles make-up. Tapi dentingan ponsel terdengar berulang-ulang, membuatku beranjak. Ada telepon yang masuk dari Om Dave, adiknya Mama, bosnya Sena—yang berarti bosku sekarang.

Sambil kembali duduk di meja rias, aku menggeser layar ponselku untuk menjawab panggilan yang masuk. “Halo, Om Dave?”

“Pagi, Sa. Udah di mana kamu?”

Aku diam, bergumam pelan sebelum menjawab. “Lagi jalan, Om.”

Bukan bohong. Tapi memang benar. Aku sedag berjalan dari tahap siap-siap sebelum berangkat ke kantor agensi.Memang pintar banget ya Raisa Kartika yang satu ini.

Aku bisa mendengar Om Dave balik begumam. Kemudian, “Bagus deh. Langsung ke sini ya, soalnya mau ngomong sama Alvaro.”

“Oke, Om. Nanti saya ke sa—eh, tunggu.”

Jelas ada sesuatu yang aku lupakan di sini. Sesuatu yang aku lewatkan. Sesuatu yang tak asing.

“Kenapa, Sa?”

Kugelengkan kepalaku sementara tangan berusaha memberi pijatan kecil pada dahi. Oh, tidak. Tentu tidak. Sena tidak pernah cerita soal Alvaro, apalagi Alvaro yang itu. Dan lagipula, ada banyak nama artis dengan nama Alvaro. Alvaro yang Om Dave maksud belum tentu artis.

Duh, kenapa mendadak aku jadi heboh sendiri hanya dengan satu nama itu sih?

“Nggak papa, Om,” kataku akhirnya. “Nanti aku langsung berangkat.”

“Oke kalau gitu. Ditunggu ya.”

Aku hanya bisa menghela napas ketika sambungan telepon ditutup. Ini hari yang konyol. Atau, tidak. Aku yang konyol. Kutepuk kedua pipiku, menatap pantulan diri sendiri yang tergambar dari kaca.

Aku benar-benar harus serius sekarang, bahkan kalau bisa membuang “Alvaro” dari kepala. Karena Alvaro yang itu sudah tidak ada lagi.

Sudah berakhir.

Alvaro-nya Raisa sudah menghilang sejak setahun yang lalu.

Dan sekarang hanya ada Raisa. Raisa Kartika. Bukan Raisa-nya Alvaro.
