MAX Talks Working With BTSā€™s Suga On His Solo Mixtape: ā€˜It Was A Beautiful And Organic Processā€™
Hugh McIntyreContributor
Hollywood & Entertainment
Late in May of this year, BTS memberĀ Suga finally unleashed the mixtape heā€™d been working on for years, giving fans what they guessed was coming for some time. The set, released under his Agust D moniker, was a rousing success, and the simply-titledĀ D-2Ā made history in a number of ways on quite a fewĀ BillboardĀ charts.
Featured on the 10-song set were several fellow South Korean musicians, such as Niihwa, Kim Jong-wan and his BTS bandmate RM. The only non-Asian act to earn a credit on the release was pop singer MAX (known to some as Max Schneider), whose presence on the project surprised some.
I spoke with MAX about how he came to work with one of the most popular musicians in the world, his reaction to being welcomed by the most dedicated and organized fan group on the planet and how he intends to follow this success with his own tunes.
Hugh McIntyre: I was really happy to see your name onĀ D-2Ā when it came out. It was a really fun surprise. Tell me a bit about ā€œBurn Itā€ and how the song came to be?
MAX: Absolutely. It was a beautiful and organic process overall. In a shortened form, the BTS guys, Jungkook and Suga, they have been giving love to my music for a few years. Putting it on their playlist, ā€œLove Me Less,ā€ ā€œOne More Weekend,ā€ different songs over the lastā€¦almost four years, and I always give love back. Recently, in January of this year, I got to go to South Korea for the first time. And of course I asked everybody, I was like, ā€œI have to hang out if I can while weā€™re hereā€¦ Itā€™s my first time being here, are they around?ā€
So I got to hang with Suga at Big Hit. And I thought that maybe it would just be a picture, maybe a thank you for giving all the love for my music. But we ended up bonding really deeply over our mutual love for basketball, and food, and music. And first thing he asks, and I was so surprised, was ā€œI have this song, and Iā€™d love you to be a part of it.ā€ I was completely shocked. I definitely didnā€™t expect that from just our first hang. And about a month later he sent me the song. It was really cool to build such a friendship, all the while creating ā€œBurn Itā€ and working on music together.
McIntyre: So Suga asked you to be on the song. Did you write your own bit and send it right back? Or was this a long process of figuring it all out and making it right?
MAX: Yeah, it was a really unique process for me. For one, obviously, Iā€™ve never done anything on a Korean song. So he sent me the full song in Korean, and there was a melody on the chorus. And he said, ā€œWhat Iā€™d love you to do is, hereā€™s the translation of the whole song and what itā€™s about. Iā€™d love you to write English lyrics to this melody of this chorus that work around the theme.ā€ It was such a specific, interesting box to be in, and I still wanted to bring my own voice to it. So I got together with my friend Amir, who Iā€™ve written a bunch of songs with. I felt like heā€™d be perfect to do it with. We got together at my apartment in New York, wrote the chorus that you hear, and we ended up going back and forth.
Finally, like two months of different keys later, he kept wanting there to be more energy. So I sang it in probably five different keys by the end. And we went up, I think it was four keys up from the original, was what we ended up settling on. And so it was actually quite a long process for how small the part was. But then in the end I ended up singing some of the Korean parts and asking to add more spice all around the track. He was so receptive to that, which was really cool.
McIntyre: Was it hard to keep this a secret? Because the whole thing was kind of a surprise.
MAX: Itā€™s been so hard, I mean, I love to tease way in advance and get people excited. And I feel like ARMY, they really love authentic relationships. They donā€™t want to feel like itā€™s just clout stuff. For a long time I was teasing that Iā€¦ The day I did the song and I sang in Korean, I tweeted something like, ā€œJust sang my first lyrics in Korean for a feature.ā€ And I could tell fans were starting to get so frustrated because they were like, ā€œI swear to God, if you donā€™t actually have a song weā€™re going to be so angry.ā€ So it was definitely hard to keep it a secret, even though I was just trying to give little clues and bits of the process as it unfolded, but still keep it a little mystery.
McIntyre: Iā€™ve written about the song a lot because it performed really well on a number ofĀ BillboardĀ charts. Were you surprised to see how well it performed?
MAX: Honestly? Yes! I mean, I know how powerful ARMY is and their fans are so dedicated, so passionate. Seeing them match the donations for the Black Lives Matter movementā€¦ Itā€™s justā€¦ They set their goals and they achieve them and theyā€™re in it together. Theyā€™re such a powerful community, they feel so deeply a part of something bigger than themselves. And I think itā€¦ Though I was surprised mainly because I was doing the song not as a, ā€œOh this is going to have to be a big song.ā€ I just did it because it was obviously something that we wanted to create together. It was more of a culture thing to me. So seeing it perform really well analytically wasā€¦ Truly wasnā€™t surprised, but you know, in retrospect of course the fans are so dedicated. It really isnā€™t a surprise when I think about it. But at the time I was very shocked.
McIntyre: Now, what have you heard from your fans and Suga and BTS fans about it?
MAX: Itā€™s been so overwhelmingly positive. Iā€™ve been so happy, because honestly I played it so that itā€™s so dark and it feels different than most of the music I put out that I was interested to see how his fans would react, how my fans would react, but itā€™s been so, so positive. Probably more so than any other release Iā€™ve put out in a long time. Seeing the acceptance of ARMY and of his fans specifically, theyā€™ve been so kind and welcoming. I know that thatā€™s not always the case. Theyā€™re very particular about seeing if somethingā€™s genuine and embracing it rather than just saying it was a good job. So I was really overwhelmed with how positive the response has been overall.
McIntyre: This comes at a really great time because you are leading up to your next album. Right?
MAX: Exactly, yeah.
McIntyre: Tell me a bit about the upcomingā€¦ Itā€™s your third full length, right?
MAX: Itā€™s actually my second, because thereā€™s always been a little confusion. I had a mixtape that came out a long time ago, but my last album,Ā Hellā€™s Kitchen Angel, was officially the debut, so this is technically the sophomore.
McIntyre: Gotcha.
MAX: And Iā€™m really excited. Itā€™s calledĀ Colour VisionĀ and Iā€™ve been working on it ever since my last album. I think that itā€™s not going to take me another four years to put out another album after this, but itā€™s been so special to get to work on it. Iā€™ve been touring throughout working on it and getting to go to South Korea, getting to go to Japan and getting to go to all these countries and see how the songs, the singles from it have reacted, itā€™s really influenced finishing it. That has been special because I feel like I get more connected with the theme of an album when I get to really experience what the fans feel. Itā€™s been so special to build up to this and have, of course, this song come out right in sort of the middle of the cycle.
McIntyre: So the album is coming, but aside from that, tell me what the rest of your year looks like?
MAX: Itā€™s exciting. I have a couple other features coming out that Iā€™m really stoked about it. It definitely is a year of very diverse features for me that honestly, itā€™s just come very naturally. I have one with an incredible British artist next month, obviously with Suga, with Agust D, itā€™s just all over the Eastern and Western cultures, which is really such an incredible thing about music. I love being able to use my voice on very different worlds of tracks.
And then of course, more singles leading up to the album that honestly are probably my favorites on the entire thing. Couple more secret surprise features of course. I think the fans are going to be very happy to hear and see who the surprise features are on the rest of the singles coming out this summer, and then, you know Iā€™ve got to some really exciting personal stuff too that I canā€™t quite reveal yet.
Honestly, given the world circumstances, Iā€™m very grateful to be in the place Iā€™m in. Just trying to give love to all the things that are going on. Give as much a light and energy as I can and as well I try to keep my journey bright and exciting.

N7 Challenge 17Ā  - Happiness
Summary: Even in dark times, Alistair can find a little happiness when it comes time to clean the cage. Animal husbandry is practically second base, right?
---
The only thing better than getting to see Garrus' ass was getting to see it when he was hanging a tarp over the skylight. Of course, there was the downside of it being uncovered in the first place. Fuck the retrofit team on that one...
Then again, the whole sucked into space to die thing was really more Alistair's problem. Most people didn't come back from that one, so... maybe he should be a little more sympathetic.
ā€¦
Nah. Fuck the retrofit team.
ā€œDo I have it straight?ā€
Garrus, unlike Alistair, didn't need a chair to reach. He was just fine stretching the tarp over the expanse. In a matter of seconds, he had the most hateful space hole covered up with a bright blue bed sheet they had found on the Citadel. Now he was just sticking it in place.
ā€œYeah, it looks fine.ā€ He sighed in relief. ā€œThanks, babe. It's been hard sleeping since I got back to the Normandy because of it.ā€
Well, that and the whole Reaper thing. But technically, both of them were off duty at the moment so they were trying their best not to bring that up. Something about the reminder of species-destroying, planet fucking synthetic lifeforms really killed the mood.
ā€œNo problem, Al. Glad I could help.ā€
Something about the turian's nickname made Alistair smile as he leaned against the wall, watching Garrus clean up. It had taken him long enough to use his name at all, much less the shortened version. Talk about a turian's sense of duty... but at least they had broken the habit of calling him Shepard.
Like... they had fucked a few times. That was a sort of first name basis thing.
ā€œWell, neither of us are back on duty for a couple hours...ā€ Garrus sat down on the bed, and the look in his eyes was nothing but indecent. ā€œHave any ideas on how to fill them?ā€
Alistair chuckled despite himself as he pointed to the wall. ā€œUnfortunately, Saren's cage needs cleaning. He didn't like what the retrofit team did with the place either.ā€
Right then, the space hamster's terrain was an unholy mess. Bedding was everywhere, and he had turned over two of his hides. Somewhere in that mess he was probably plotting to bite the shit out of Traynor should he ever get close enough. He was lucky Saren didn't have fingers, or he was pretty sure the little guy would have broken out to achieve his mission.
It was only natural; he had survived the Omega 4 Relay too after all. That sort of thing gives a hamster a real chip on his furry little shoulder.
ā€œCock blocked by a hamster then?ā€ Garrus chuckled, a sound that did terrible things to his insides. ā€œMind if I lend a hand? It's been ages since I've seen the little guy.ā€
That got Alistair laughing as he started to dig into his hamster supplies. ā€œSure, if you can find him. After he went Hurricane Saren on his enclosure, I have no idea where he's hiding out. Usually he likes under his wheel, but...ā€
Garrus finished for him. ā€œHe flipped that too I see. Are you sure he's a space hamster and not some horrifying mini pyjak?ā€
Yeah, the hands were all wrong. Still, the Spectre chuckled as he pulled out bedding and his cleaning tools. Today's color was blue, so at least Saren was getting a pop of color in his enclosure. Maybe he could add the palm tree chew and a rock hide too... give him a little island getaway.
Yep, island theme cage. He could see it now.
Humming to himself, Alistair brought everything over to the wall that contained Saren's enclosure. He popped the panel out and reached in to start tidying things. Much to his surprise, the scurrying of tiny feet soon followed.
And then Saren tried to bite the shit out of his finger.
ā€œWell, someone's grumpy.ā€
Alistair made sure to keep his fingers out of the way as the space hamster came barreling out of his hiding spot. Something about his beady eyes being so laser focused on carving out a pound of flesh for the indignity of the move was charming. Of course, his teeth hurt like hell so he wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of getting a bite in. At least Saren got the chance to look intimidating as he worked out who was coming to see him.
He calmed down once he realized it was the food guy. Worked like a charm.
ā€œSomeone looks fierce today.ā€ Garrus' voice was softer as he peered over. ā€œI thought space hamsters were nocturnal.ā€
Yeah, but... space was funny like that. Normally, Saren wouldn't be up for a few more hours. The move had probably displaced his internal clock, so used to the set time on the Citadel where he had been staying during Alistair's house arrest. Now that he was back on ship, he was making adjustments too. Apparently, they made him a little cranky.
He could appreciate that ā€“ the Reapers fucking everything up made him a little cranky too.
ā€œGuess he's still adjusting to being back on the Normandy.ā€ He carefully reached out to stroke Saren's furry little head. When he came back with all his fingers attached, Alistair held out both hands. A few seconds later, he was pulling his hamster out of the enclosure. ā€œAw, there's my little guy. Don't worry, I'm not the retrofit team.ā€
Garrus chuckled softly above him. ā€œGoing to be a little hard to clean his cage and play with him. I can keep an eye on him while you work if you want.ā€
Alistair blinked, trying to process the words. If he didn't know better... but the meaning shined through. His heart honestly skipped a beat as he turned to face the turian, Saren still cupped in his hands for safety.
His boyfriend wanted to hold his hamster. They had officially reached a new stage in the relationship. Fuck bases, animal husbandry was where it was really at.
ā€œYou sure?ā€
His mandibles twitched ā€“ he was embarrassed. ā€œI mean I held Colonel Fluffytail back on the old Normandy once...ā€
Right, Alistair remembered that, partially because the sight of Garrus cuddled up with his now departed hamster had almost made his heart stop. What could he say, he was a sucker for strong men with cute animals.
And, even better, he had long since taught the turian the basics of not killing a space hamster, so no worries about that.
ā€œIf he starts getting too rambunctious or he bites you, I can take him back.ā€ Alistair carefully held out his hands as Garrus extended his, talons down. Saren scampered across the bridge and was soon lifted up to the turian's cowl.
Cue the heart stopping. Fuck, it was too cute. He needed to work or he'd never get anything done.
So he turned away and started spot-cleaning. Once that was done, on went the new blue bedding to mimic an ocean in the corner. Since the older stuff was white, he could practically see the sandy beach in his mind. Something about that made him smile as he turned to get the palm tree chews.
Then he almost dropped them.
ā€œBeen a while, little guy. You're getting kinda chubby. Did Al's niece fatten you up while you were gone?ā€
Garrus was carefully stroking Saren's head with the blunt side of his finger. His voice was so low it was almost a whisper, yet the translator still managed to pick it up. All the while, Saren was cuddled up close to his scarred mandible, looking more peaceful than he had in months.
Alistair kind of forgot how to breathe in the moment, but could you blame him?
It was hard then to not see the turian a few years down the line ā€“ well ,maybe a lot of years down the line ā€“ with a small turian next to him. He would probably use that exact same tone, wear that similar look that was so full of caring and affection. Those talons could probably put toys together or hold a crying small one...
ā€¦
Where the hell had that come from?
Alistair blinked as he looked down at the palm tree chew in his hands, still needing to be put in the cage. Definitely not from the wood. He shook his head and shuffled back to the cage, propping the palm tree near the edge of the 'water'. Then he added a bit more bedding to shore it up before flipping the wheel right-ways.
ā€œIt's looking good. Much less tornado alley now.ā€
Garrus was speaking in normal tones now as he handed over the rock hide he had pulled from his collection. Heart still pounding, Alistair accepted it and placed it over the tunnel Saren had used to escape his underground lair. It was basically perfect now ā€“ he just needed to refill the water now.
ā€œI hope he likes it.ā€ At least his tongue worked now. ā€œHe seems fond of you.ā€
The turian chuckled low ā€“ it was that chicken sound Alistair had come to love. ā€œI think it's because the guy who feeds him has a thing for me. Don't pets guess that sort of thing?ā€
That got the Spectre chuckling as he elbowed Garrus in the side ā€“ to no affect, of course. He was a turian after all, that's what the carapace was for. ā€œI have a thing for you?ā€
ā€œSomething like that, it was kind of hard to tell when you were making me beg last night.ā€ But then he stopped and patted Saren on the head. ā€œEr, maybe I should save that kind of talk for when this little guy's back home. Don't want him getting the wrong idea.ā€
Laughter filled the room as Alistair needed to lean against the wall. It was the strong, soul-scraping type of laughter he had been sorely needing with everything going on. Definitely dislodged some of the crap that had been building up inside him. When he was able to straighten up again, he felt lighter. The burden wasn't completely gone yet, but it felt lighter.
He felt better.
ā€œI think he's well aware of that by now, babe.ā€ Alistair wiped his eyes, still chuckling a little. ā€œHe's nocturnal.ā€
Garrus' mandibles flapped in embarrassment as he stroked Saren's head. Classic avoidance gesture, with a furry pal to pair up. ā€œOh... right.ā€
He nodded to the cage, careful not to dislodge his ride-on buddy. ā€œTime to put him back in, then? He probably wants to check out his summer getaway.ā€
Alistair nodded and held out his hands once Garrus had hold of his pet. Soon, Saren was back behind glass. Within seconds, he had zipped to the rock hide and disappeared from view. Somewhere, in his hidden tunnel system, he was a happy camper.
Good. He deserved a little happiness.
ā€œI take that as a good sign he approves of your layout change.ā€ Garrus reached down to squeeze his hand. ā€œUnless he's secretly plotting revenge against us.ā€
One again, the Spectre chuckled as he squeezed back. ā€œNo, I think he approves. Usually he kicks bedding if he isn't happy.ā€
It would take until tomorrow to know for sure, but as long as the food bowl stayed right side up he could be content with his job.
ā€œWell, you would know.ā€ Garrus squeezed again, but then he was glancing to the bed again. ā€œSo... we still have time...ā€
This time, when Alistair chuckled there was nothing friendly about it. He felt his voice shifting to the lowest it would go as he placed his hand on the front of the turian's carapace. ā€œOh? Is that so, Vakarian? Well... Ā I'd be more than happy to correct your form.ā€
And then with a push, Garrus was on the bed. Lucky for them, Saren was buried under a lot of substrate. After all, they had a couple hours to themselves ā€“ might as well make the most of them. And now that the skylight was properly covered...
Well, he felt ready to go the extra mile, let's just say that.
