im so obsessed with Умник. why does this random child have concepts but grief doesn't. why does he get an age but aglaya doesn't. who is he.
it's so strange he didn't even make it into the 2004 alpha as a bound but the existence of his design document means he could've been... we only know he's Some polyhedron kid from this dialogue:
They say many used to go in before, but then they realized what it does and got scared a bit. All in all, it's not so popular these days. But Smartypants did go in. [...] Most of them are with Notkin now.
confusingly, "Smarty Pants" is also the name of a rat that the rat race kid uses to explain rat races to you. maybe the rat was named after the kid, reasonable if he defected to the soul-and-a-halves...

“And I feel broken up about it, because I don't want things to change. I don't want to stop leading the Soul-and-a-Halves, I don't want you to give up on the Dogheads, I don't want to stop fighting, but I also want to have you like this. And I know it's not possible.”

AU / headcanon scene - “End of the World”
more shameless whump Mad Max or Book of Eli kind of deserty post apocalypse vibes I have a different post apocalypse HC- I just realized I never cleaned it up and posted oops. anywho this one is a different setting from that
idk how old they are in this, or what decade it is. unsure if there are vehicles or not
Soul and a Halves are hiding out in an old storm drain kind of thing? or bunker. it has access to a cave/spring water but is otherwise completely dry. Dogheads are in some half dilapidated high rise a bit of a walk away it rains for the first time in years. and I mean like flash flood kind of rain. Notkin gets sick (as per usual), it's really bad pneumonia. one of the kids goes to the dogheads to trade for medicine Khan ends up coming back with them the entire Souls' fort is dank, moldy, etc because of the water. Khan tells them to search for leaks, seal off bedrooms, dry as much as they can, and open manholes to the surface to cycle air out. then he gives Notkin the meds and brings him to the high rises as it'd be safer for recovery Notkin gets better in a few days and is later found angsting at the edge of one of the roofs Khan: "I didn't think you for one who would fall prey to the call of the void." (the intrusive thought to jump) Notkin just sits in silence for a bit. then says "Raiders havent attacked in awhile." Khan: "I tend to see that as a good thing-" Notkin: "I think everyone's dead." TLDR their crops are getting harder and harder to grow, they haven't seen any other people in years, there are no animals, no nothing. Just flat, empty desert and even emptier ruins. on top of Notkin's shit immune system and other health issues… he is thinking of just driving/walking in a direction until he finds proof that the world isn't dead (aka hope). or until he dies himself
I think its a bit OOC but.. Khan's more of a dreamer (obviously) so he is more likely to be like "well it just rained so the crops might do better after it drains a bit-" Notkin: "it's sour water and you know it"
Notkin was always more based on material things, not in a greedy way just.. he more down to earth and he recognizes that he has less and less to offer/promise his kids for a future each year.
I dunno, I'm always a bit unsure about his motivations for the future

If you told me there were two factions of kids, one that necessitates that every member takes care of a pet, and another that lives in a impossible celestial tower that houses dreams and souls, and you asked me to guess which one was called the "dogheads" and which one was called the "soul-and-a-halves", brother take a wild guess for which name i'd assign for each.

thinking thoughts about how most pathologic modern aus don’t take place in the town on gorkhorn. personally i think it would be fucking sick if the town on gorkhorn was still Like That they just had wifi and warrior cats books. soul-and-a-halves and dogheads would be people who get bullied for being furries vs. kids who write fanfiction

Quotes: Invented by Me for RPG Purposes - [RIP]
"'The wise' say a lot of things; that's why they're called 'the wise' and not 'the silent'." - Aspity
"Earth is whole, it shan't be split; Earth is holy, it shall be respected; Earth is Mother, for we are of her flesh; Earth is grave, as we shall all return to her. Forsake Earth, and you forsake yourself." - Kin Wisdom
"What is pure, in the eyes of the Mother of all? She shall love her children no less for mixed blood, as it is hers; in our graves she shall embrace us all back into her flesh. Such human trifles matter not to her." - Whispers of the Khatanghe
"Glass can be fashioned in infinite shapes, tempered in the fires of hell, and crystalized in dazzling colors. No matter what is done to it; if it's glass, it will always have a breaking point. People are much the same." - Plisetsky Family Proverb
"We have our own souls, as well as those of our halves. Normal people just have the one, and Dogheads only have half of their, if they're lucky; they sell their souls to Khan the moment they put on the mask." - Soul-and-a-Half Creed
"Unlike bulls and their horns, men are not born with bodies sculpted for violence. That makes it all the more insidious when menfolk fashion themselves with weapons harvested from the Earth to kill one another in petty disputes." - Cossack
"Rubin carried bandages and medicine, Old Burakh carried tinctures and notes, Young Burakh carries twyre and junk. I wonder what Sahba must carry in her bag." - Albow
"We are all pieces in someone's board, the difference between players and pawns is who knows the game and what's at stake." - Svetlana Plisetskaya
"[Rats know all sorts of things, that's why cats eat them. To gain knowledge. Jester's smart from eating rats, so he knows eating my Half would be a mistake.]" - Aide
"People say father didn't raise me, but they disregard how he taught me by example. I am to our Mother Superior what he tries to be to the Foreman." - Khetin
"Toil, soil, boil, coil, broil, oil... I don't remember learning these words, maybe Notkin said them." - Biksa
"Like blades of grass whistling in the wind, so too do people brush one another; that is how whispers are born. Crowds and fields buzz with the hum of people and twyre." - Albow
"Bones, for strength; meat, for sustenance; skin, for safety; nerves... We don't use the nerves." - Cossack
"do you know what lies between one second and another? six degrees, but only if your clock is well adjusted." - Ekaterina Plisetskaya

That post about the Soul-and-Halves' name seeming to more aptly describe the Dogheads and vice versa except it's Capella. The girl with visions with red hair but would you believe it she's not the Scarlet Mistress. Thats her sister-in-law.

"Capella's Call" pairing ➡ Soul-and-a-Half x Doghead length ➡ 7 chapters / ??? (ONGOING)
summary ➡
"The kids, they have a town within the town. Gang skirmishes, death, magic, and mystery...all away from the prying eyes and ears of adults. What, exactly, does it mean to be a fifteen year old in such a place?
Dandy, one of Notkin's loyal Soul-and-a-Halves, knows all too well what it's like. What he wasn't expecting, however, was to develop a budding relationship with what should be his sworn nemesis: a Doghead."

since the dogheads have visible dog heads that are similar to the dogs in the game, it's viable to think that the soul-and-a-halves are all wearing cat heads it's just that every cat in patho is invisible

I found an old Reddit post with most of the shared dialogue between characters in Pathologic 2 and I’ve been thinking about it a lot. (link) I’m just gonna put several of my thoughts in one post.
Lara, Eva, Victor, and Katerina all have a line of dialogue that’s some variation on “A hundred years? No, no, too much. Forty? Not nearly enough.” I have no clue what they’re counting years for, but it’s interesting that they all share it. Aglaya, on the other hand, has a line of dialogue that goes, “Twenty-one. Thirty-four. Fifty-five… enough.” So it seems like whatever the others are trying to figure out, she’s got it covered. Phew. (Honestly this one stumps me but I feel like there’s a significance to it)
Another one (which I discovered in game, hence why I found the pose) is that Notkin and Grief share that little limerick that goes, “There once was a man of great humour, who found he was dead of a tumour. But he woke up today, to his neighbour's dismay, and that of his cow once he took her!” This one just makes me realize that Notkin is essentially a younger Grief, and I like the idea of him becoming the leader of Grief’s gang after he gets too old to be a Soul n a Half. It’s even better because I first heard Notkin say it in the Diurnal Ending, which just reinforces the idea that his future looks like Grief. Also makes me consider who the other termites might parallel, which leads into my next point...
Khan and Andrey share the line “when the cat’s away, the mice will play.” I honestly wouldn’t have thought of this parallel, but it makes sense! Both of them have a connection to the Polyhedron, Andrey is a boyfriend rival to Grief, just like Khan is to Notkin, both have a romantic relationship with a future mistress. It’s pretty obvious that the Dogheads and the Soul n a Halves’ respective philosophies mirror the tension between the different philosophies of the adults. Each of their leaders gets a parallel to a member of the faction their gang is most like. (Utopians for Khan, Humbles for Notkin) I could make a whole separate post about this point cuz it’s fascinated me since I noticed it, but let’s move on.
Capella and Maria share quite a few lines, which makes sense, it’s an obvious parallel. But they also share the line “souls of a feather, flock together” with none other than Grace. Maybe because she’s also a future mistress (in Nocturnal, at least)? I’m not sure, since neither Taya nor Clara have this line, but it’s interesting nonetheless.
Big Vlad’s line of dialogue that goes, “Heads or tails? Tails. Always tails” seems to be in direct contrast with Taya’s line, “Heads or tails? Heads. Heads, heads, always heads!” The most obvious connection between these two is the Termitary and the Kin. These two characters are both rulers over the Kin, but, as the line would imply, have entirely opposite perspectives on them; Taya seeks to help them however she can, where Vlad seeks to exploit them. Vlad is the Kin’s past, and Taya is their future.
Finally:
Tumblr media
Can confirm, these men are all idiots.

for the ask game!! swevery, jerboa, nocturnal, herb bride and clairvoyance! sorry if that was a lot lmao
SWEVERY: termites, humbles, or utopians?
utopians!
JERBOA: soul-and-a-halves or dogheads?
i think they're both neat. but honestly i would probably go with the dogheads, just marginally.
NOCTURNAL: least favourite character?
i don't think i really have a least favourite character, honestly. even the characters that i don't like as people i do like as characters because they bring something interesting to the game and the world. like, big vlad sucks but he does so in an interesting way.
HERB BRIDE: favourite song on the soundtrack?
WELL. as you have probably noticed i am very normal about the soundtrack of pathologic and pathologic 2 and spend only an ordinary amount of my time thinking about it.
my favourite in classic hd is (naturally) bridge square night but i am also fond of rubin's lab theme. the cemetery theme is good also but that is at least in part because it sounds like it's being played on boomwhackers.
the pathologic 2 soundtrack is... generally extremely solid. i know a lot of people don't agree with that but it is in fact an extremely good soundtrack but in a completely different way to how the classic soundtrack is. also, i am charmed by its use of the prepared piano, which i don't think i have ever heard in a video game soundtrack. i think i will look at the actual soundtrack and the theodor bastard album separately though.
from the actual soundtrack album i would say that deep dreaming is extremely solid as a piece of music. i've talked before about what i liked so much about it and i stick by that analysis. it is delightfully 20th century russian in a way that actually wasn't allowed to exist for a very long time -- i have talked a bit about both dmitri shostakovich and pavel chesnokov and what happened to them as a result of the soviet government before -- which feels very pathologic-y in and of itself. and it is also a delightful piece of music.
from the theodor bastard album i will pick umbraya erze, because for one thing it bops and also the way it's used in artemy's route is i think my favourite thing in the game. damn. (i'm looking at the description of the video on youtube and i have never seen the phrase 'prepared cello' before in my life.)
also the soundtrack recording of gnossienne no.3 is unironically the best recording of that particularly piece that i have ever heard.
CLAIRVOYANCE: favourite mistress?
my favourite previous-generation mistress is. probably victoria, just because i'm curious about what her deal was. my favourite current-generation mistress is capella because she is my daughter whom i love.

literally going insane thinking abt how patho2's design notes describes the dogheads as working with "miracles" and the soul and a halves as focused on "simple and earthly values such as animals"... god the fucking cinematography
