it was not, in fact, perfectly safe

The Sontaran Experiment 1975
Tumblr media
6/10
A fun little filler episode. Not bad at all. I always enjoy 4, Sarah, and Harry, so this one is a win.

It disappoints me that The Sontaran Experiment didn't incorporate Tom Baker's broken collarbone into the plot. I mean, the script already has the Doctor getting shot twice, falling down a cliff, and wrestling a Sontaran twice...that's at least five possible explanations for him getting injured. And he even had Harry right there to patch him up. A missed opportunity, I say. (Yes, I would very much have liked to see him save the day and beat the Sontarans with his arm in a sling, ok?)

the fourth doctor acting relatively unconcerned, passionate and curious but never really outwardly angry, in the majority of his first few serials was a really interesting character choice that I enjoyed very much. however. seeing him finally snap, shout “you unspeakable abomination” and literally launch himself at a sontaran for torturing sarah jane.. :) <3

Doctor Who: The Sontaran Experiment
I rewatched this serial of two parts on 1 March 2023. Happy St David’s day, folx. Oh, and happy 48th anniversary of the first screening on the BBC of part two of this story.
Our heroes arrive on a windswept moor and the Doctor gets to work on repairing the transmat for the people on Nerva Beacon. He tells Sarah and Harry to go wandering — a first! — and of course things are not what they seem. There are astronauts, and a robot, and an alien in the rocks torturing the humans. It’s not long before the alien is revealed to be a Sontaran. This one is Styre, who is experimenting on humans in ways reminiscent of Nazi war crimes.
Fun fact: almost all of the astronauts are played by white South Africans. One of them, Glyn Jones, has the distinction of writing the 1965 Doctor Who serial The Space Museum.

watched The Sontaran Experiment today and does anyone know why the Sontaran just. deflated. like a sad little sontaran balloon with no more air in it, lying on the ground after an underwhelming children's party. like a pathetic little inflatable swimming pool toy. like a camping airbed slowly and painfully shrinking because of a hole in it. is this a regular thing for this era of doctor who?? do all of the sontarans do this when they die and I've remained peacefully and blissfully unaware?? i could imagine the noise of a balloon zooming around the room when you let the air out of it without tying a knot. why and how did this happen.
