Day 3 - Romance
Tumblr media
After another long productive day of training and errands, both entertainer and bodyguard return back to their home to continue with more work. Beaureve always felt accomplished if he had felt the ache in exerting his body and was in need of a shower. He was far from the glamorous man saw on stage right now, with hair pulled back and his sweaty workout clothing in layers over him. Slipping out of his shoes where they are always placed, the entertainer grumbles and finds his way to the living area with a heavier satchel of request than usual. There were packages in the midst of everything which usually indicated different kind of requests. Slumping on the sofa, he stares at the ceiling for a few moments as he knows he has to deal with this. And the sooner the better. Unearthing the contents of his bag and sorting the letters in meticulous fashion to review, he would have to judge and book accordingly through all of these. Ripping open one of the packages after the basic letters were dealt with, he produces a long letter of what seemed to be poetry and compliments along with shallow promises accompanied with expensive jewelry. Already bored, the entertainer rolls his eyes over it. He was sure this person that had sent this found themselves quiet charming in this attempt to woo him. It would be one of a handful this week. After a sigh, Beau skims through the writing for anything at all relevant. He opens the elaborate box that held some crafted ear cuffs in an arrangement of beautifully crafted metals and gems that were meant to take the breath away of any appreciator. Beaureve was not an easy man to impress, but at least he could assume that the value of the object was high and it earns a slight nod of approval. Sliding the box on the table he takes out his planner for the upcoming couple of months and a ledger with descriptive notes. He was already making a note of selling this item as it was from someone that knew he would not wear gifts from them. It was their own choice to send, but he didn't stand for people thinking they owned him because he accepted a token from them. Looking over the planner getting ready to confirm his appointments of the week, there was a note that catches his eye. He had not memorized this one so it out of place for him. It was in Ramiaell's handwriting, with the simple word 'Dinner' in a designated time slot. It had him fluster quickly in the ears and tops of his cheeks. Perhaps this was not romantic to many, but to Beau? It was exceedingly so. Ramiaell had taken the time to notice what heavy schedule he had and picked out an optimal time to alleviate the stress during that series of intense days with a planned dinner. Like he just knew.... His lover had emerged from the kitchen with a small tray. A couple waters and brewing tea in pot with cups. Pointing to the green tea blend in the pot,  he speaks directly. "For muscle recovery." Ramiaell's supported a rather neutral expression, but he looked Beaureve in the eyes as if dictated it was meant especially for him. It earned him an appreciative slow smile from the entertainer. In everything the man of Stone did, it was all for the priest's well being. There was never a time that Beau didn't feel it. Their contract forged that had started as hiring him as a protectorate, had developed into more on paper as well as practically. Again, even if people could not understand how this was endearing to the both of them it worked for the two of them. It was if he just found someone that finally understood the language he was speaking in. And suddenly the world they more than accepted they would be alone in? Gained them a chance to discover what their version of what friendship and love could feel like. "Thank you." Beaureve nods about the tea and watches as the other sits with him, taking up the ledger to help him make notes. "So. The beginning of next week then. Dinner is it?" he was acknowledging the plans and Ramiaell glances over. Only Beau could tell there was a hint of a slightest smile. "If that is acceptable." were his only words about this right now. Another nod is cast before the priest reaches over to place on the man's leg. "Very acceptable."  he confirms but knowing that they could talk more in detail later moves on to the business that needed to be finished up. Everyone has a different view on romance and for Beaureve, he was discovering for himself it was about the small things. The genuine things. Never filled with the superficial words or extravagant gifts or traditional societal expectation. Something that was beyond the physical. It was about sharing an everyday without the glamor. It was about knowing how to take care of someone. There were so few people that could actually be able to really take care of this tycoon in the making, for he was extremely independent and ambitious but Ramiaell proved he was more than capable. Had so many skills he lacked while complimenting others. And they kept teaching each other about those parts of life they just never were able to live before meeting one another. And all of this was being created without any semblance of Beau's mind abilities, because they were essentially useless against Ramiaell's barriers against magic. So sitting with one another and creating schedules and revising goal journals was something real and worthwhile. While the monetary was driven for in Beaureve, at the end of his day it was what that represented when he finally had enough of it. It symbolized freedom and eventually a making of a new empire for those that craved for a different life than they were forced to live. Sharing this dream with Ramiaell instead of keeping it all to himself had given Beaureve something people accused him not having. A heart.
(( What can I say. Beaureve is not a usual person when it comes to romance. But neither is his partner! They are both cold as ice and hard as stone most times, because no one really knows their language. It really was a miracle these two met each other when they did. I enjoy rping their developments very much.)) @daily-writing-challenge @ramiaell

1. Is there something you have been trying to learn lately?  - There’s kind of a few, because I feel like they all tie into one. Self acceptance is a big one, self-discipline, productivity, and trusting in God (which has proven to be the hardest thing. It hurts to trust in something you don’t see the outcome of, but it hurts too much not to trust in God.)
2. If you ever feel like you are different from your extended family, in which ways is this?  - My dad/s side of the family is really toxic. There’s a lot of hypocrisy, drama, mental illness, drug addictions, and religiousness on that side (and when I say religious, I mean shame-y religion which I don’t agree with at all.) But my dad was really different from them. He was very kind, open to council, very steady and stable despite coming from such a dysfunctional background, and he loved God so truly that a lot of that pure ‘religion’ that exists within his family was broken off of him, and then I have my mom too, who is very fun, kind, caring, etc, so I grew up around more normalcy than my cousins did. My parents just parented me well and they talked about God to me and my sister a lot in such a good way that I never grew up around pure, shame-y, rule-bound religion which I think is the explanation why I (and my sister) are very different from our extended family. My dad died when I was fifteen so I don’t see that side very often, especially because they’re just entirely chaotic and dysfunctional so when I am around them it’s way more noticeable how different we are. (Sorry for big explanation. I’m in a super reflective mood lol.)
3. When you think about your future career, do you envision yourself becoming the head honcho or CEO? If not, why not?  - I’ve always kind of wanted to have this leader-esque feeling to my career, but no, I don’t see myself being a CEO. I really just want to be an author so I guess I would have some level of being a leader to my own business, but not quite on a CEO type level. Right now, I’m trying to focus on fiction but I’m easily overwhelmed by it so I have been considering other mediums of writing. I just don’t know what that is or what fits right.
4. Is there something that you are sort of weird about talking about? Like, a thing that other people find casual, but you feel uncomfortable when the subject comes up? - Sex, is the first thing that comes to mind, but not sex in general. More like the conversations that are too much, you know? Lol. Some people go really into detail or can be graphic about their sex lives and I’m just like, please don’t. I don’t mind generically talking about it, but there’s a line.   5. Can you think of a time when you seriously misjudged a music artist based on their name?  - I don’t think so.
6. Do you ever make negative comments about other body types? How does it make you feel when you see or hear negative comments about your body type, or a physical trait that you have (even when it’s not directed at you)?  - Sometimes I have the tendency to judge other body types (i.e. I really don’t like the thigh gap look), but it’s never malicious and I’m always trying to be aware that others can’t help what they look like and if they’re happy in their body, that’s what matters. I struggle with disordered eating and kind of sit on that line between having an eating disorder and not having one so I’m very sensitive about my body and its type. I have a chubby tummy and I’m so insecure that it’s not flat that when I hear anyone say anything negative about not having a flat stomach it’ll ruin my day or I’ll just feel really ashamed.
7. If you are in a situation where you feel like you are being attacked or not respected, how easy or difficult is it for you to stay and keep your head rather than leave in a huff?  - I’ll usually leave the conversation. Maybe slam a door lol. I’ll usually stand my ground until I finally feel like I’m not heard or no one cares and then I’m out.
9. When you think about how attractive you feel and your favorite features, are you comparing yourself to a societal ideal?  - Yes. I happen to be well-acquainted with the comparison game.
10. If you have a favorite song right now: What is it? How did you first hear it? Why do you like it so much?  - My favourite song is probably Coney Island by Taylor Swift right now. It’s from Taylor’s new album Evermore, but I have a couple on that album that tie for my favourite song right now (Honorable mentions: Willow, Cowboy Like Me, Tis The Damn Season). I absolutely love how poetic this song is and I think one of my all time favourite lyrics she has ever written is in that song: “If I can’t relate to you anymore then who am I related to?” This song for me just feels like I’m reading a poem and I just sink right into the story she’s telling.
11. Have you ever had someone that has been your friend for a while come to you and tell you they had romantic feelings for you? How did you respond, and did the friendship survive?  - I did have a friend of mine tell me they had feelings for me. We had become friends in the eighth grade and then he confessed his feelings for me in the ninth grade, I told him I didn’t feel the same way but we stayed friends and it didn’t ruin anything, and then he confessed again in the eleventh grade and I said no to him again. After that final rejection, we never really made it back to being friends for a few reasons a) We stopped being in the same classes, b) I think he was really hurt and c) his friend (who is most dramatic than a girl by the way, and ironically dating one of my friends at the time) stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and gave his two cents and that was kind of when it fell apart. I didn’t really know his friend so it was weird that he had this narrative of me that he said “was leading X on” when I was just trying to be his friend but it’s whatever now. That was when I was like sixteen lol.
12. Hypothetically speaking, if Hillary Clinton were running for President as a democrat against Chris Christie as a republican in 2016, who do you predict would win the election?  - Well, since it’s 2021 now, I would predict that Trump would win and divide America.
13. When you are getting to know someone new online (particularly someone male), how cautious are you of the possibility that they are serial killer/kidnapper? - I honestly never think of this, mostly because we live in such an online world now and I’m an adult. I don’t really know how much of this still happens, but you just don’t hear about it anymore. Not to mention, if it is a male, it’s most likely a pedophile (which is still gross) rather than a killer or kidnapper.
14. If you are talking to someone that you want to get to know, what are your go-to conversation topics? What subject makes you disappointed when another person isn’t interested in or knowledgable about it? - Tbh I feel like I’m really bad at conversations and I don’t know how to lead them because I’m quiet and scared of looking stupid. I know I really like deep conversations more than basic questions. However, it’s very important that I know their opinion on Taylor Swift because if there’s a chance they don’t like Taylor Swift, I already know that the person is probably not worth my time. For real though, if I’m having a conversation with someone, I usually get disappointed if I find out they’re a partier or drink a lot, because I’m really not into any of that stuff so it’s immediately like playing the Sims and having the minus sign appear above my head.
15. Say you have a lot of free time and want to join a club or class. You are browsing postings on local bulletin boards and online. What sort of group would you be interested in joining (e.g., book club, game group, crafts, golf lessons, etc.)? - A romance-only book club, DIY club.
16. Have you ever kissed someone that you didn’t really want to kiss (not assault, just indifference)? Why did you go along with it and how did you feel after?  - Nah I’ve never been kissed
17. Have you recently learned anything about your personality? If not, have you ever consciously tried to change your personality? - Sort of recently, it was something I discovered last year which is that I’m a neurotic perfectionist and what I mean by that is I’m a perfectionist in a very self destructive way. I’ve always known I was ‘particular’ or others would say ‘has high-standards/expectations’ but I realized that it’s literally just perfectionism.
18. Are you or any of your friends in a sorority or fraternity? Would you be interested in belonging to one?  - No and I don’t really understand what they are or why they’re a thing.
19. Can you recall a recent time that you were surprised, but in a bad way? - Yes. When my job eluded that they thought I was stealing from the registers. This happened around September 2020? Basically they didn’t flat out say that’s what they thought, but they made comments that the tills were either short or over at the ends of the night whenever I would be working and dead ass said “it looks suspicious”. I think it was surprising because I’ve worked there was two years and really felt like they should have known my character. (I literally am afraid of getting in trouble for the smallest things and they seriously thought I was capable of stealing from them lmao)
20. Do you feel uncomfortable when you receive praise for doing certain things? If so, does this make you less likely to do those things?  - No totally the opposite. I really struggle with validation and I never feel good enough, which is something I’m working on, but it feels almost like I thrive on praise. Maybe it’s because my love language is words of affirmation?? I just always like/need to know when I’m doing a good job so when I don’t get praise or validation my self esteem plummets.
21. Do you make spontaneous purchases often or rarely? When you are upset does it make you temporarily happier to buy yourself something new?  - Spontaneous purchases, often because I have no self control lol, but lately I’ve been working hard to try to save more. And yes when I’m upset, it does make me feel better to buy things.
22. If you have to wake up early for something, what time is just TOO early for you to be there and be presentable and sentient? Have you ever had to be somewhere that early?  - 5 am. I think I can manage 6 am, but anything before that is a no from me. I used to work at 5 am when I worked at Chapters, but it was a nice shift because I finished work at 10 am and then went home and napped for two hours and then had literally the entire day.
23. Have the majority of your romantic relationships started with a physical attraction or a deeper connection? - I’ve never had a romantic relationship oops. But at least I read romance novels every day (and I write romance too!) I’ll try to answer this based on what I think would happen. I think it would start as a physical attraction and I think a lot of relationships start that way but they become something when you have a real connection. I think there are relationships that can start the other way though too, but I’d say for me it’ll probably be physical attraction first.
24. Do you ever catch any of those conspiracy shows on Animal Planet, like Bigfoot hunting or proof of Mermaids? Do those shows make your more or less likely to believe in the existence of such creatures?  - No, but I DO watch ghost conspiracy theories/”REAL GHOST CAUGHT ON CAMERA” videos on Youtube for fun. But no I don’t believe in any of that stuff.
25. Did you ever write a fan letter to a celebrity? How about submit something to a magazine? - I’ve never technically written a fan letter to a celebrity but I wrote a post on tumblr to Taylor Swift a couple years ago that she’ll never see lol. And I’ve never submitted anything to a magazine, but I’d like to one day.

“Fantum maskz! Git ya’ Fantum maskz! Fer da low, low price a’ all da teef in ya gob, you’ze can look jus’ like Warboss Fantum! Jus’ way, way runtier,” a greenskin merchant bellowed, his calls largely drowned out by the countless other merchants jostling to sell their own wares. The Buhzarr, as the Operorks referred to their main marketplace, was extremely busy today, as well it should have been. The Fantum, warboss of the Operork clan and leader of the growing WAAAAGH! Bignoyz, had finally announced that the WAAAAGH! was ready to take off in search of a “Roight gud foight” and new war stories to sing about. As such, the merchants of the highly organized – by Ork standards, at least – primary warclan were capitalizing on the excitement. Lots of excitement meant lots of loose teef, and lots of loose teef meant lots of greenskins looking to spend said teef.
One greenskin in particular watched the clamoring mob with a smile of amusement from on top of a flimsy “apartment” complex, chewing on some dried meat held in her one good hand. La’al had spent an entire year trapped on this planet, and she had adapted fairly well once things had… well, things involving Orks never really calmed down, but they mellowed slightly. Having painted her limbs and skin green, even with her “roight Orky” helmet she still shouldn’t have passed well as a greenskin. She was much shorter and more slender than proper Orks, while also being much taller and well-built than the gretchin populace of The Stayj – the name the greenskins had given to the planet during their stay. But apparently being able to best most Orks who gave her trouble through hand-to-hand combat was all the bhe’ghaal needed to accept “Lildeff” as one of their own.
It had not been a particularly easy year of her life, as the number of new scars crisscrossing her biological components could clearly show, but she was doing much better than she had ever expected she could. Finishing off her meal, she clamped the jaws/visor of her helmet shut again and dropped down a few stories, walking along atop the various merchant awnings a few yards above the densely packed streets of the Buhzarr. Whenever one of the Orks below noticed Lildeff’s unique silhouette and made a gesture or call up to her, she would respond in kind, either waving the new, much more well-made blade she had recently welded to her left arm or replying in Ork tongues, either true Orkish or their human dialect. If she had been Por’faan the bhe’ghaal’s relative camaraderie would likely have made her entire life worthwhile. She had somehow managed to live alongside the antithesis of the Tau’va. And all it had really taken was some strategic displays of force, and occasionally proving that said displays were more than luck.
After a few hours of relatively aimless wandering, occasionally knocking the teef out of a particularly rowdy greenskin to trade for her regular supplies, the prices of which had been dramatically marked up with how many teef were flowing lately, she found herself at the edge of town opposite where she had made her “home,” more a very heavily booby-trapped cave just beyond the outskirts of the shanty-city, and looked upon the fleet, an odd sense of awe in her at the sight. There were more than fifty Mega-Gargants of various size and design parked out in the badlands – and towering above all of them was the Perish Operork Fort, the Fantum’s personal command center. Even to La’al’s T’au sensibilities it was utterly breathtaking. The Perish was so unbelievable in its scale that even the spires of the Imperator titan whose deployment on Dal’yth she had seen recordings of would have barely reached mid-chest on it.
She had never heard of a bhe’ghaal force so well organized or armed as this WAAAAGH! and she took immense pity on the people who would soon face their wrath. She had done what she could to sabotage the construction of many of the Gargants, but with the way Ork technology functioned, the lone Fire warrior held little faith that her makeshift explosives and strategic cutting and acid bathing would do more than slow them down, enough to allow evacuations with a bit of luck. Despite that, she had worked hard to make sure many of the lesser war machines, like the Kans and Dreads, would crash in spectacular fashion within just a few engine activations, and many Mekz, Painboyz, and Nobz among their numbers had met their end along the edge of her blade, glinting in the dark of night.
Wandering out onto the depot field where the fleet was parked up, she gave the titanic machines another looking over, testing and weakening external mechanisms covertly as she went.
“Oi, Lildeff! Ya bring me anyfin’ ta nosh on?” came a shout from several yards up one of the machines, the “Fist uv Maybee Mork,” if memory served. Looking up, La’al rolled her eyes at the severed purple head yelling at her.
“When wuz da last time A’ brought ya’ anyfin’, ya’ daft git? Ya’ dinnae even ‘av a stomach,” she responded, her own accent still not quite gone behind the Ork one she put on.
“’Oo needz a gut ta’ nosh on stuff?” Nashtoof retorted, swinging himself about on the chain dangling his head from the Gargant.
Shaking her head with a chuckle, La’al jumped up to the spot he was hanging from, finding a relaxed position on one of the many “small” guns jutting out of the machine.
“Pretty much any’un not an Operork, Nash,” the “greenskin” said, pulling some jerky out of her bag and impaling it on one of the head’s tusk-like lower canines. Her words were quite true though. La’al herself had decapitated Nashtoof an entire year prior. However, the “kultur” of the Operorks was extensively intertwined with their ability to sing. As such, the clan held zealously to the belief that their heads had literally no need for their body other than to get properly stuck into fights. Admittedly that was fairly important for Orks in general, but Operorks could be a part of the fight without ever needing to swing a blade or pull a trigger. Their songs alone could, as La’al had seen with her own two eyes, whip their brethren into an astonishing bloodlust, make their machinery work with nearly unparalleled efficiency, or even shake the very foundations of mountains.
“Lookin’ for’ard ta’ getting’ off world, finally?” the T’au asked as Nashtoof worked the piece of meat off of his tooth with his tongue.
“Zog yeh!” he responded before finally getting a grip of the food. “Bin way too long wiffowt a gud scrap!” His chewing on the jerky didn’t even muffle his voice, a concept La’al found even stranger than the fact he was speaking without a body. The line of what is possible had to be drawn somewhere, right?
“I’ze gotta say, doh. I get dis odd feelin’ dat we’ze gonna be in for a bigun soonah den latah,” said the bhe’ghaal, an odd darkness and calm coming over him, fully opposite of how any normal Ork would say those words.
“Whyz’at?” La’al asked, looking down at the head with mild confusion and surprise at the tone of his voice.
“Dunno. Jus’… jus’ a feelin’. Sky’ze getting’ dark, doh. Probubly time fer ya’ ta’ leave, den’. All da’ best scraps iz gonna be goin’ on bakk in town,” the hesitant tone and sudden shift of subject put La’al very much on edge. Even so, she nodded and hopped down from the titanic machine.
“Yeah. Prob’ly time. Dinnae wanna miss da’ gooduns. See ya’ round, Nash,” she said, walking back toward town and the sounds of its clamor. She had adjustments to make to the stellar radio she had been cobbling together in her cave over the last year before its first test that night, after all. But still, something was scratching at the back of her head in regards to what Nashtoof had said, and not just the bhe’ghaal’s tone of voice. It was something she couldn’t quite put her finger on. Until, like a sun cresting the horizon, it dawned on her.
Snapping around, she looked up at the system’s star, still high in the sky and as yet untouched by the growing storm-clouds. Yet it was growing darker and darker by the moment. Then, the sky began to roar with the sounds of countless fighter craft and dropships falling through the atmosphere.
La’al saw red. Not for the fighters, not for the dropships, not in their Guard colors. No, what drew the fury from the darkest depths of her heart was the drop pods, falling wave after wave into the badlands and sprawling shanty-towns around her. The drop pods. The jet-black drop pods. Marked with the jagged cross.  The Black Templars had brought their eternal crusade back across the Damocles Gulf. And from the Stayj, a bellowing cry of bloodlust and excitement rose to meet them.
(And so the climax approaches. I’ll admit, not totally sure about how well this particular part works out for someone who didn’t write the thing. Deeply sorry if parts of this story feel less than cohesive with one another. Don’t really have much of a commentary at the moment, but as always I’m open for any questions and critiques)
No need to apologize, and sorry I took this long to get back to you! The truth is just that I've had a rough spell and thus was quite inactive for a while, but thank you for still sending me this.
I do not have too much commentary on this one; I enjoy the closer look at Ork cultural cues and societal nuances, I have always enjoyed those, so seeing something of a market at the outset, for example, was something I enjoyed greatly!

Kiwi Lyric Interpretation #1 (Literal Interpretation)
This is the second installation of my Kiwi Lyric/Video Analysis series. There will be three parts, the third being a metaphorical interpretation. For the sake of not clogging up your dash, the rest is under the cut.
She worked her way through a cheap pack of cigarettes / Hard liquor mixed with a bit of intellect
She probably comes from a rough part of town. Nobody these days really starts smoking just for the fuck of it unless they face abnormal societal pressure to do so. They’re cheap, so she probably works a lower class job and smokes them specifically to get a nicotine fix rather than for social reasons, at this point. Chain-smoking? Probably. She’s smart, strikingly so, and probably a little bit devious. Hard liquor. She doesn’t fuck around.
And all the boys, they were saying they were into it
Either the boys (in the band) or all the boys (in the immediate vicinity, I assume) are “into it” meaning they’re either into her or the lifestyle. Lifestyle doesn’t make much sense, considering they could have much better than that lifestyle with much better ways to cure the itch for a habit.
Such a pretty face on a pretty neck
Oh, look, it was her! Guess what, she’s hot. Even her neck is hot. Wow.
She’s driving me crazy, but I’m into it, but I’m into it
She fucks with his head, but it’s lit because she’s got that sex appeal.
I’m kinda into it
She might fuck with his head a little too much. But like… it’s aight. Apparently. Maybe. He knows better, but. She seems pretty fucking exciting, amiright?
It’s getting crazy
Wow, I love partying. Partying is great. Clubs, bitches, hoorah. But this girl isn’t a bitch, she’s in control, isn’t she? She’s the one make the decisions and setting the rules. “It’s getting crazy” implies a certain distance from the narrator, as if he’s not the one making things happen this way, as if the events are simply happening to him.
I think I’m losing it, I think I’m losing it
So it becomes too much, right? He doesn’t have a grasp on reality anymore, she fucks with his head too much and there are probably drugs involved and this entire existence he’s crafted in her company (and apparently maintained long after she’s left) is too overwhelming, and why is he even doing this anymore? Is this even still a thrill?
Oh, I think she said,
He’s hazy, when she comes back to him. He can barely remember the encounter, either from the shock or from the other things in his body inhibiting his senses and memory. He’s really gone off the rails, hasn’t he?
“I’m having your baby
Okay, that’s a pretty big bomb to drop on someone. I’m having your baby. She’s pregnant. It’s definitely his.
It’s none of your business
Alright, alright, this part is interesting. Because, well, it is his business, isn’t it? Especially considering it seems like she’s going to keep it. It’s arguable that not all men should have a right to make the decision whether or not a woman maintains a pregnancy. However, it’s hardly within a woman’s right to birth a child and deny the father even partial custody unless he has something really sinister going on that could endanger the child. Granted what we know about her, she doesn’t exactly seem like she’d be the best mother on the planet, so what is it about him that’s so terrible that her birthing his child is none of his business? It could be a “strong independent woman” thing, like she doesn’t want his help, doesn’t want him in her life. But that’s not the way the law works. Her life may not be his business, but this child certainly is, especially from a legal perspective.
I’m having your baby / It’s none of your, it’s none of your”
This reads like an echo to me, like he really was so out of it when she told him she was pregnant that the words ring in his head, distorted, on a loop.
It’s New York, baby, always jacked up
Okay, so she lives in New York City, where it’s always a party and the city never sleeps. “Always jacked up” certainly sounds like a reference to being high, definitely uppers. Think meth, Adderall/Ritalin, cocaine.
Holland Tunnel for a nose that’s always backed up
Holland Tunnel is a place in New York City that is notorious for drug use. The giant sniff in the background of the song right about here is a nod at cocaine. “For a nose that’s always backed up” is also very specifically about cocaine, and at that, about addiction. It’s not just something she does every now and then, for fun. She has a problem. Is this while she’s pregnant? Your guess is as good as mine.
When she’s alone, she goes home to a cactus
Cacti are generally easy to care for - water them a little bit every once in awhile. One doesn’t have to be home often at all to own cacti that don’t die - she could be gone for days at a time without them being damaged. Additionally, the inclusion of the cactus line goes to show that that is all she comes home to - no family, no pets, no roommate.
In a black dress / She’s such an actress, driving me crazy
So she’s still out in the world trying to seduce. At this point, she’s either not very far along in her pregnancy or she’s not gotten pregnant yet. Since she’s driving him crazy, I’d wager that this is about the way he sees her when he gets to know her a bit better after their initial meeting. “She’s such an actress” is a pretty heavy claim. He’s not even saying, “She’s lying about this one specific thing.” He’s stating that her entire existence is an act, and that she’s not at all who she pretends to be, whether it be that she lies about her name, what she does for a living, etc. or that she pretends to be unaffected by certain things and too cool to deal with others, etc.
Pre-chorus
Chorus
(*screams* La la la la)
The la la la’s seem to be a nod toward Woman, a song widely accepted, specifically in the Larry fandom, to be a declaration of rage and frustration toward his significant other’s beard(s). They don’t appear anywhere else in the album, and in his solo music, he has stayed far away from fillers such as “[I think it went] oh, oh, oh, oh, [I think it went] yeah, yeah, yeah” and any kind of na na na. Given the shriek in the background, it seems to be a touch whimsical, showing just how “crazy” everything has gotten, but I do think the link between the two songs is worth noting.
She sits beside me like a silhouette
She haunts him. Like his own shadow, she’s inescapable. “Like a silhouette” also seems a touch ominous, like maybe she’s not quite welcome anymore. Twice, the color black has been tied to her, which is, symbolically, typically negative. It’s symbolic of darkness, the unknown, sin, etc.
Hard candy dripping on me ‘til my feet are wet
This line has been extremely controversial. First and foremost, I do not condone the use of this line, and I am not apologizing for it. In terms of interpretation of the song, it seems quite obvious - to me - that the woman in this song is not a child. While it’s true that some children and teenagers live alone (as in the case of runaways or children whose parents have passed, who might have been “taken in” by older siblings and put up in their own apartment just to keep them out of their hair), there’s nothing else in this song suggesting she might be a child. Most children have a hard time getting ahold of cigarettes and hard liquor in this day and age unless they’re getting them from their parents, with whom it’s established she does not live (“comes home to a cactus”). Additionally, while not specifically stated, the nuance to this song so far implies that she’s a manipulator and that she’s the one who has been showing him the ropes. This is just not characteristic of a child or a teenager, even those with terrible upbringings and vast amounts of freedom, no matter how deep they are in the rough part of town. Additionally, if it was about a child - I don’t think it is, no matter how poor the choice of words may be - Harry and a team of writers are not stupid enough to self-incriminate in a highly-anticipated song, let alone one they’re angling to make a single. Nobody is going to stand on a platform and say, “Look at me! I’ve been doing despicable things with minors!” The “‘til my feet are wet” part of the line reeks of discomfort, like this thing is just happening, whatever it is, until it’s become a part of him that he never wanted in the first place. This can be gathered by the tone of the song and the context of what he’s undoubtedly feeling toward her at this point in the timeline.
And now she’s all over me
Why is she suddenly all over him? At this point, she has already told him that she’s pregnant with his child and that she doesn’t want him to have anything to do with it. What’s she all over him for? Money? Because it sounds almost predatory, like she’s trying to seduce him back.
It’s like I pay for it, it’s like I pay for it
“It’s like I pay for it” is double-sided. It’s like he’s paying for his actions - getting mixed up with her in the first place when his gut probably told him she was bad news? Additionally, my sister pointed out to me that, in conjunction with the line “And now she’s all over me,” it certainly reads like he’s likening her to a sex worker. Whether she is one or not, there’s a clear tie between her coming onto him sexual and the monetary meaning of the word “pay.” As she lives a less than stellar lifestyle heavy with illegal pastimes, it’s not unlikely that she was meant to be a prostitute in the first place. However, it makes little sense that someone in his position would ever cross paths with a prostitute, considering One Direction has always had consenting-age groupies they could have enlisted, did they feel the need. What’s interesting, additionally, is that he seems so not into it at this stage but it doesn’t appear that he really does push her away. He doesn’t want this anymore, but he’s consumed by her anyway. No matter why she’s coming onto him after she said she didn’t want him around, he’s letting it happen - or rather, it’s happening anyway. This line reads as almost impersonal, like he’s an observer in the events of his own life rather than a participant. This could be a coping mechanism to distance himself from the blame, or he could be accepting that she’ll always be a part of his life now, that he’ll never be rid of her, as it seems, at this point, he wants to be.
I’m gonna pay for this
This is not a light statement. It’s a full-circle moment of understanding that he is the one responsible for his actions and for everything that has happened to him since he met her. He didn’t have to become involved with her. He didn’t have to get her pregnant. He could have fought for custody of his child - honestly, do we even know if she’s still pregnant at this point? He’s accepting responsibility for what he’s done and saying, “This is what I get. Everything that follows this moment is something I deserve.”
Chorus
Something additional to consider is the fact that Harry has been quoted - true or not - on the idea that this song started as an inside joke. Him doing drugs with an addict prostitute and subsequently knocking her up and her saying she doesn’t want him around their child, only to reel him back in when he’s of use to her doesn’t sound like something particularly worth joking about. Actually, most of this sounds a little uncharacteristic of Harry in the first place, or at least the image we’re supposed to buy into. But you know, there is a little story this interpretation does remind me of, and that is going to be the basis of the third part of this analysis, the interpretation that can be gathered by way of metaphor. That one is coming soon.

Otherkin Challenge
I got this challenge from the blog @justanotherkin and thought it would be a good thing to fill out on my new tumblr! I’ve made very minor changes to some questions.
1. What name do you go by? What is the significance of it to you?
The name I go by usually isn't something I’m very comfortable with sharing here, but that has a lot of importance to me because I’m transgender and choosing my name has made me a lot happier. Online, I tend to go by Bumble, which is just a silly nickname but cheers me up. I believe my selkie-self is called Sìoda but I don’t call myself that.
2. How old are you? What is the gender you identify as? (human)
I’m 18 and I’m a nonbinary trans guy.
3. What are your kintype(s)?
Selkiekin, alienkin, spiritkin, felinekin, and I’m questioning monsterkin.
4. How long have you known that you are otherkin? How old were you when you awakened?
I think I’ve pretty much always seen myself as nonhuman and had connections to certain species and such, from a very young age. However, I didn’t know about the existence of otherkin or therians until much later, and was actually against the communities for many years. I think I was just in denial and wanted to join in with everyone else making fun of otherkin. I only started getting involved with the community about a week ago.
5. How did you find the otherkin community?
At first through tumblr, and then just searching around for forums and group chats.
6. How does being otherkin affect your life?
It doesn’t really affect me much daily, though I definitely feel a disconnect from humanity almost all the time. I do experience “species dysphoria” but I wouldn’t compare it to the level of discomfort that gender dysphoria brings me. I also have some paranoia about friends/family finding out about my identity. I’m homesick most of the time, too.
7. Are you “out of the metaphysical closet”? If so, to whom?
The only people I’m really “out” to are those on otherkin group chats or forums, and that’s very anonymous to be honest. I spoke briefly about my worries with my best friend a little while before joining the community, but didn’t want to press the issue further because she clearly doesn’t get it. She wasn’t mean about it though.
8. How did/would your family react to you being otherkin?
They would either laugh at me, ignore me, or think I’m crazy. Probably all three. (Sidenote: I am actually mentally ill, so I think my parents would believe that me being otherkin is a symptom of this. I know that isn’t the case, but there you go.)
9. What does being otherkin mean to you?
It simply means that I am aware of my nonhuman identity and my nonhuman selves, in whatever form that might take. It’s just a part of my daily life that I’ve recently come to terms with and makes me understand myself better.
10. How do you believe you came to be otherkin? Is it a psychological connection? Were you reincarnated? Explain.
This depends on which kintype we’re talking about, so I’ll give it a go:
Selkie: I’m living a parallel life with my selkie self
Alien: I was “reincarnated” into my human body from an alien life, and my soul is still alien
Spirit: As a being, I’ve always been a guardian spirit
Feline: I have a feline soul alongside mine
11. What do you hope the otherkin community will be like in ten years? Are you for public awareness or against it? Why or why not?
I hope that the community is even bigger in ten years time, and hopefully viewed with less contempt from the outside world. However, I’m not really for public awareness, because I think it will only bring us more hatred. Also, I don’t view us kin as an oppressed group, and would therefore like to focus more on the support of genuinely oppressed groups such as POC and LGBTQ+.
12. Do you have phantom/astral limbs? What are they and how do you feel them?
While not so much a phantom/astral limb, I often feel the texture of my seal’s tail as a selkie on my legs, as well as other sensory experiences like seaweed and cold ocean water around me. I also have nose and mouth twitches that I believe are related to my cat’s whiskers.
13. Do you mental shift? Have you ever harmed yourself or someone else during one?
I do mental shift sometimes, but it’s never been dangerous. The only possible danger is that I might try to do things that my human body can’t really do (e.g. swim in very dangerous waters, go on very long forest walks - I have a disability so this is impossible).
14. Have you ever mental shifted at a time when it could be considered inappropriate?
I think some of the times that I go nonverbal (I’m autistic) are triggered by mental shifts, and that’s always “inappropriate” or at least inconvenient.
15. Do you astral project or practise any occult crafts?
I’m a witch currently trying to get back into his practise.
16. Do you feel you are any sort of danger to society?
Not at all! I might have some “weird” beliefs and be nonhuman but I’m generally very peaceful. I wouldn’t hurt anyone unless they hurt me or someone I loved.
17. Does your nonhuman identity complicate everyday life for you? If so, how?
As aforementioned, the only real impact being nonhuman has on my daily life is feeling disconnected from humanity. This does cause a decent amount of social and emotional issues, as well as “species dysphoria” interfering with my moods.
18. Why do you believe are here as a human?
I’m not really sure about this one to be honest, but it could be linked to me being spiritkin: maybe I’ve been sent to specifically protect the nature on earth for the time being. Still unsure, though.
19. Are you active among the otherkin community?
Recently, yes! I’d love to be more active on the tumblr kin community too, but I’m scared about all the anti//kin things that I might end up seeing.
20. Are you religious? What faith do you follow? Does it contradict your otherkin identity or do you feel that the two are synonymous somehow?
I don’t follow any sort of organised religion; I like to think of myself as a semi-theistic Pagan. I believe in Mother Earth and have thoughts of a great Universal Spirit, but I don’t “worship” them as such. This does’t contradict with me being otherkin at all - in fact I think it might explain my spiritkin identity.
21. Have you ever been emotionally, verbally, or physically harrassed simply for being otherkin?
I haven’t experienced this directly, but the fear of it happening is why I’m very private and secretive about being otherkin. I’ve witnessed a lot of online bullying and mockery of us, and for a long time I was one of those people being mean to otherkin/therians because I just wanted to fit with what I saw people saying.
22. Do you efel you are oppressed because you are otherkin?
No, not really. Oppression is based in societal systems and ingrained belief, and to be honest it makes complete sense that humans wouldn’t understand people claiming to be nonhuman to any extent. I do think that the bullying and mockery is unnecessary and cruel, but I wouldn’t call it oppression.
23. What is your take on fictionkin/mediakin/factkin? What about machinekin and appliancekin?
I’m not sure I really understand fictionkin, but I’m not really against it. However, anyone who gets angry at a writer or other person involved with fiction because they aren’t adhering to their kin canon is just rude, and threatening to harm yourself over this is incredibly disturbing. I would consider myself fictionhearted with multiple characters, and have no problem interacting with fictionkin as long as they aren’t rude like I said before. I definitely have a problem with factkin, as I just see that as identity theft. I really can’t get my head around machinekin and anything else that isn’t living or spiritual, because I don’t believe that a non-living thing can exist in a human body, but I don’t think those people are inherently bad.
24. Did the awakening process seem relatively easy or difficult to you? Why?
If I refer to the process of accepting my nonhuman identity as my “awakening” then it was definitely difficult. Like I said, I spent years making fun of otherkin - not actively or online, but with friends, and I would sometimes look at the tags on tumblr - which I know realise was me trying to cope with being nonhuman. Making the transition to acceptance was scary.
25. What do you think of the information provided online about otherkin - is it relevant or not?
Most of the things I’ve found have been relevant, but a lot of articles written by non-kin just don’t have a very good understanding.
26. How has your otherkin/therian identity defined you as a person? Do you feel as if it has given you morals that you didn’t have before?
I think that coming to terms with my nonhuman identity has helped me be more accepting of other people’s identities as long as they don’t harm themselves or others. I think my general confusion surrounding vegetarians/vegans comes from me being selkiekin and felinekin, but I have nothing against those people.
27. Have you learned any life-long lessons due to your otherkin identity?
Nothing is what it seems.
28. What do you want to do with your life?
I’d like to go into animal care as a career (e.g. pet rehoming shelters, conservation, ethical farming, animal sanctuaries, etc.) as well as being a writer and musician on the side. I’m willing to do any job in the meantime that doesn’t involve too much social interaction.
29. Do you have any tips or advice for young and/or newly awakened otherkin?
Get the “tumblr savior” browser extension (or any alternative you prefer, I think xkit is quite popular, do your research) and blacklist any anti//kin tags you can think of. This will bring you a lot of mental peace, trust me. Surround yourself with positivity but remember to keep a critical eye. Find ways to live in balance with your kintype(s) as opposed to having a jarring double existence. You may have to accept the fact that “coming out” as kin in your public life will likely cause more harm than good. Make online friends.
30. Anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’m so glad I’ve finally joined this community - I’d been scared for years.

PREDICTIONS 2017
Predictions 2017 by mistressmyst Predictions 2017 a message from Selacia To view more of Selacia's insight, visit her website, Selacia and the Council of 12 Predictions 2017 In the year 2017, a crisis of trust long in the making will be surfacing across the world. This will have far-reaching consequences for us as individuals and for our entire planet. Continue reading to understand what this means, why we should care, and what we as divine changemakers can do to make a difference. As you read, too, you will learn about the seeds of hope being planted in 2017 and what they mean for you. Background – Crisis of Trust First, some background on the crisis of trust we face. This energy of distrust is more primordial than evolutionary, stemming from humanity’s fear-based conditioning. In other words, it’s very old and more tribal than inclusive. Tribalism has been with us throughout the ages, but in recent decades since the 1990s, the tribalistic “us-and-them” mentality is having a big resurgence. Examples: Brexit, the 2016 US elections, Middle East violence driven by ancient tribal structures, extremist Islam reflecting a tribal-mindset involving warrior pride and hate-fueled jihadism, corrupt business practices including bribes, and a general tendency of superpowers to believe that it’s their role to facilitate regime change in other countries. Regardless of how tribalism manifests, it poses a threat to a peaceful and loving world. A tribal-mindset is black-and-white, with a narrow sense of belonging. Anyone outside the group is suspect, not to be trusted, and a threat. Building trust and cooperation between tribal-based groups is painstakingly difficult. Meanwhile distrust fuels division and causes people to feel even more separate from one another. Distrust and Division Distrust is a learned fear-based response. People learn to distrust others who don’t look like them, don’t think like them, or don’t practice the same religion. Many times, this distrust is in ancestral DNA, coming from centuries-old experiences of the generations. Example: When I do personal DNA intuitive healing sessions for someone trying to cope with discrimination, I often intuitively see DNA-level patterns show up in the energetic field around the DNA. We then can trace things back to times when the person’s ancestors were impacted by religious intolerance, class discrimination, or racism. Being able to see where this comes from and to heal it at the genetic level for ancestors is a powerful antidote for present personal struggles with discrimination. Shift in What and Who We Trust As our society has become more polarized and everyday life more uncertain, there has been a shift in what and who we trust. Last century, for example, it was more common to put our trust in institutions like governments, banks, the health system, and international forums. Today with that trust waning and new technologies available, we are more likely to rely on others outside the system – even strangers. Examples: many now use technologies like Lyft and Uber for rides, Airbnb for hotels, WebMD and Mayo Clinic apps and websites for health assessments, and mobile apps for blood pressure and heart-rate readings. Having a growing array of life tools outside the norm has boundless benefits and can help us to take charge of things that we used to delegate to others. A bonus: as educated consumers, we take back our power and become more actively engaged in managing our lives. A red flag: if we label the established systems as inherently bad in a black-and-white way, our linear thinking can backfire. No traditional system is all bad or all good. There are shades of gray. Sometimes we really need to see a doctor and use services of a bank. Governmental bodies and police forces carry out essential services needed for a stable and workable society. In summary, if you realize that you distrust institutions, be open to seeing both the good and the bad. Reforms of unworkable systems and institutions can occur when problems are brought to light and conscious citizens use their voices and actions to affect change. When we don’t do this, the crisis of distrust escalates. Distrust and Division Distrust and division go hand in hand. We see it every day in society. Distrust shows up in countless ways - as racism, gender bias, bigotry, national extremism, and religious intolerance. Division follows – people feeling separated by race, gender, class, religion, or political views. Contributing Factors When people are afraid enough and misinformed or lied to with propaganda, they are vulnerable to control and manipulation by those in power. In such circumstances, people can be convinced to accept unimaginable atrocities and loss of freedoms. People can be influenced by fake news and a twisting of the facts, feeling divided against their neighbors and even their own families. In extreme situations, people will even kill one another. There are countless examples of this throughout humanity’s history - including in the next phase of history that humanity is now creating moment-by-moment in present time. Response to Distrust When the societal tide turns towards distrust on a big enough scale, people may respond with anger or apathy. If people feel that their voice isn’t heard by political decision makers, they may withdraw from active engagement in typical channels like voting or peaceful protests. This is usually an emotional response, and is self-sabotage because personal power is unconsciously given away. A disempowered group of people is even more susceptible to control and abuse by those in power. Tyrants and power-hungry leaders seeking to make their mark on the world can take advantage of the void created by a disempowered and silent populace. The unsuspecting people may even see the unscrupulous leaders as “saviors” – as though they are the only ones who can fix things. In a distrustful society, people can be convinced of falsehoods by politicians, media, or special interest groups that know how to craft a disinformation campaign. This has happened throughout history. However, today the potential negative impact is substantially greater than ever before. People often get their news online through infotainment disguised as facts. A lie told repeatedly over weeks or months can be accepted as truth. It’s like the public becomes numb to the information, unconsciously reacting to it without question. Cycles of Distrust Throughout history, we’ve had cycles of distrust followed by times of building trust and collaboration. Examples: Italy’s notorious dictator Mussolini in the 1920s capitalized on distrust and used propaganda to fuel his rise to power – founding fascism, dismantling constitutional limits on his power, and creating a police state. From 1941-45, the Nazis under Hitler systematically carried out a mass genocide of Jews. The UN in 1948 adopted a universal set of human rights, sending a signal to oppressive leaders that disregard for human rights is intolerable. The International Space Station, first launched in 1998 to study the Earth and space, was made possible through a trusted partnership between several countries. The tide turned abruptly on September 11, 2001 with terror attacks on US soil –leaving a marker of distrust still witnessed today. Distrust of crisis proportions doesn’t appear overnight, but develops in a gradual process as people lose trust in each other and in the very institutions that keep things working. In an atmosphere of distrust, society does not function well. Without trust and cooperation, basic things like markets and long-term planning are compromised. Chaos reigns, slowing progress in addressing key issues impacting not only quality of life but continued sustainability of life on Earth. Examples: climate, peace, and global resources. The Personal Level What’s unfolding in society is not just something outside of you. There is a very personal level involved. It is about you and everyone you love. Here are a few examples to help you understand the big picture. As you are reading this portion, too, keep in mind that this personal level applies to countless people across the world. Some may be in your family or other circles. Some may be strangers. All represent some piece of the whole – now being played out across the world as a crisis of distrust. Every single one, including you, needs your love and compassion. First, it’s not easy as an individual to live in a society that doesn’t function well due to division and distrust. Daily life routines can be disrupted because of ongoing intensity, uncertainty, and dramas that often are of a startling nature. Not knowing what’s going to happen next can keep you on edge. The unknowns now are greater than most of us have experienced in this lifetime. If you are an empath - sensing the chaotic and nervous pulse of society - these times can be even more challenging. Second, you likely are processing your own pieces of distrust. Some are influenced not only by recent events, but by past life influences recorded in your DNA. You may distrust certain individuals, categories of people, or those who serve society in key roles. Examples of people: politicians, wealthy people, lobbyists, journalists, police, and other authority figures. Examples of institutions and business: government, media, multinationals, big retailers, and things representing the status quo. Third, living in a climate of distrust may catalyze self-doubts and a deeper soul searching about your life purpose and how you fulfill it. Any tendency you previously had to distrust yourself and your decisions may be amplified in this cycle. One way this could play out is an increased worry about the future. You may not trust that things will get better, or that things will get better for you personally. When faced with a deadline to make a life-changing decision, you might distrust yourself to choose the correct option. Fourth, a world filled with distrust and division can feel unsafe. There are countless reasons you might feel insecure. A big one many people fear is a possible terror attack. It’s also common to feel unsafe about potentials for identity theft or cyber bullying. In places with recent regime change bringing dictatorial-type leaders to power, people are insecure about preserving their freedoms. And, of course, in the background for people everywhere is the concern about world peace and the tenuous nature of preserving it given the number of power-hungry leaders. Fifth, a climate of distrust between countries can negatively impact the economy and your standard of living. Example: a tribal-mindset to trade has historically backfired. In 1930 after the US stock market crash, the US enacted the Smoot-Hawley Tariff to raise taxes on imports. The idea was to keep out cheap imports and create jobs. This backfired. US consumers had to pay more for imported products, so they were not better off, and the economy took longer to recover from the Depression. Sixth, resurgence in tribalism is likely to bring to the surface humanity’s ancient unresolved patterns of discrimination in all of its forms. This supreme distrust of the “other” could involve things like race, religion, gender, national identification, and sexual orientation. You may not personally experience discrimination. However, you likely know of someone impacted. As long as discrimination exists, the loving world all of us want cannot fully manifest. Seventh, countries having tribal squabbles can delay or even reverse progress to address climate change. What this means on an everyday personal level is more extreme weather, increased air pollution, adverse health effects, rising sea levels impacting heavily populated coastal areas, species die-off, and an increasingly less sustainable planet for future generations. What’s Needed Next With a crisis of distrust coloring everyday life, it is imperative that we divine changemakers take an active role in transforming our world and our way of life. This is not the time to take a back seat and silently watch as leaders govern through lawmaking and executive orders. We must have a voice. Elements of a Democracy A democracy functions and upholds freedoms when citizens are actively engaged. This means that people become educated on issues and candidates ahead of elections, vote, observe how leaders conduct the business of government, and feel free to criticize leaders without retribution. Criticism can take the form of peaceful protests. Citizens are allowed to assemble freely to discuss views. Elections are free and fair for all. A workable democracy has a free press with regular access to governmental workings and leaders. The government in power does not censor information, news sources, or specific journalists. Divine Changemakers – Making a Difference Here are suggestions for making a difference in 2017 and beyond. As a divine changemaker, you are alive now to make changes for a more loving world. You stand at the forefront of the massive shift happening now. This role is actually encoded within your very DNA. Having this role means that you are on the leading edge of change, experiencing many things before others do, and helping to lead the way forward. Indeed, you are at your best when you are actively engaged in your divine changemaker role. What You Can Do in 2017 Stay conscious and aware of yourself - including your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Extend that conscious awareness outside of you, to other people and world events. Remind yourself daily that your energy matters, and use that energy for good. No matter how crazy things seem, remember daily that you are not a victim. You are a conscious being at cause in life, co-creating your own reality and your world. Use your thoughts and actions constructively to make a difference in big and small things. Be the one in your circles who smiles, finds humor in the bizarre, and applies kindness. Do not give up on yourself or on humanity as a whole. Strive to see the good in yourself and others. Do this even when focusing on someone you dislike. Do this for yourself after you have had a bad day and feel discouraged. Remembering the basic goodness in all people helps you to go on during difficult times. Cope better with unknowns and fears about the future by coming back to yourself in the present. No one knows for sure exactly what will happen next, on a personal level or in the outer world. On a quantum level, there are endless possibilities for what tomorrow might look like. Rest your overthinking mind, then, and put your focus on the present moment. Treat it as the precious time that it truly is. Upset about what you see in the outer world? Get in touch with your feelings and why you have them. Once you are conscious to your feelings, turn your criticism into benevolent action. Rather than simply complain to others, find your positive voice of change and act on it as a citizen of the world. Voice your thoughts within your community, on a grassroots level in your country, and to the political leaders who represent you at all levels of government. As you voice your opinions, visualize your words being received and acted upon. Become one who helps repair division through consciousness and peaceful actions. Invite a knowing of the causes and places that most need you in this role. Add power to your role with daily visualizing and intentions – seeing yourself as a bridge builder and peacemaker. Become vigilant about your intake of information and apply a healthy skepticism. Avoid becoming duped by fake news and political propaganda by becoming astute in digesting news. Slow down, be present, and question what you hear. Avoid getting your news by scanning headlines. Get your news from multiple sources. Insist that it be reliable, with several credible named sources that you can validate. If something seems too outlandish to be true, that should be a big red flag to check out the information. Fair news won’t report only one side. A fair story will be current – watch for stories that recycle information or photos to create bias. Most likely, we’ll be witnessing a number of unprecedented events in 2017. Some may be shocking, some simply surprising. A big underlying theme throughout the year will be unpredictability. Continue reading to find out about the silver linings and the seeds of hope that indeed exist side-by-side with the disarray. Discover what these mean for you. Future Seeds of Hope Regardless of how crazy things become in 2017, life will go on. Your plans and projects can be re-energized within the new energies. Spiritual transformation potentials can be amplified by leaps and bounds. Relationships – new and current – can manifest in ways more supportive of you and your path. One silver lining in 2017 is the potential for new beginnings. The energies will support this. On a personal level, think of this as a blessing for your life and what you want to manifest. Even your established projects having success could benefit from adding something to the mix – like an additional collaborative partner or a new specialty that adds to what you already have. Revive a current relationship by finding an additional shared focus or introducing new ways of being with each other. A second silver lining in 2017 involves change and your response to that change. The acceleration of change is not slowing down. Change is like a palpable force stimulating transformation of all things that need to evolve. Interestingly, while we humans are wired to dislike change, when the momentum of change becomes super-charged and we realize we’re better off going with it, we find ourselves at a beneficial tipping point. Practising Writer’s Craft Summative-TedTalk Podcast
For my practising WC summative, I’ve decided to do a TedTalk podcast on more of a psychological perspective! I’ve tried my best to shadow the style of a TedTalk within my podcast and here is the transcript....
This TedTalk features Writer’s Craft student, future lawyer, proud daughter and your average teen, Amani Adeeb recorded live at Ted2019.
Hello everyone. I wanna start this podcast off by expressing myself just a little bit. Now pardon me, I may not be a certified psychologist or have a phD completed, but I do find pleasure in psychological research and reading in my spare time which resulted in a bit of interesting knowledge gained throughout the years of me doing it. I’m your average teen. A highschool student working hard in school, working a part time job, and working hard at home as well. Many of times I ask myself “why do I work so hard and still feel unaccomplished? Or unfulfilled?” , and I know many of you guys could relate, whether you’re an adult or a teen like me. At our age, it’s so important to begin a journey of self development, progression and actualization.
I wanna ask you guys-Who here has ever felt or feels limitless? Or independent? Or accepted? Or spontaneous? Just living life fully happy and fulfilled. Well of course, we all run into our ups and downs-Situations that are sticky and well, just not the best. That’s completely okay because through it all, you accept, learn and move on as time heals. As I speak you must be thinking “well, that’s all so much easier said than done.” To really let time heal and let us forget hardships, or to feel limitless, or to feel accepted. The truth is, in the 21st century these are all really hard.
We live in a society which strives to conform us to fall in the trap of all these norms, otherwise indirect unacceptance is inevitable-being different is difficult. Feeling limitless is almost impossible with more than half our paychecks going towards bills, with your 12 hour shift tomorrow, and on top of all that it’s so hard to be spontaneous. To just say, "F it, let’s go on a roadtrip girls!!!” And with all these things to do in the 21st century, you begin to lack self-actualization. Well, that’s not necessarily something you’re given. It’s more so something you build, something you gain after getting to know yourself, after experiencing difficulties and peaks.
Now that all ties into what I’m about to talk about next. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This theory proposed back in the 70’s has been forgotten about in our 21st century, yet I feel as though it should be more prevalent for our modern society-Where we often forget who we really are, we often lose our sense of self-actualization in this busy time. Briefly getting into the actual hierarchy itself, Abraham Maslow formulated a psychological hierarchy of basic human needs. This hierarchy consists of 5 sections divided into two categories: deficiency needs and growth needs. The first four levels of this hierarchy are the deficiency needs, needs that arise when you’re deprived and basic human needs for your survival and well being. These needs motivate your will to live and survive. These needs consist of physiological needs such as food, water and shelter. The other 3 on top of that consist of safety, love and esteem. But this isn’t my focus for today. Self actualization, the topic of this discussion lies at the top of the hierarchy of needs. Once you achieve your physiological needs, safety, love and esteem you are supposedly self actualized. But what does that really mean? What does a self actualized person in the 21st century really look like? Maslow’s theory consisted of about 20 characteristics of a self-actualized individual. You must be thinking 20?? That’s a lot. This ties into my next point..
American psychologist, Scott Barry Kaufman actually wrote a research article about being self actualized in the 21st century. Now, all this research consists of integrating Maslow’s hierarchy to modern theory and narrowing down 20 characteristics into 10 simple and modern characteristics of what our generation self actualization looks like. After performing thousands of surveys across Canada and the United States, 10 of the 20 characteristics proposed by Maslow were more prevalent within people who consider themselves fulfilled and achieved. In addition, self actualization is overall related to higher levels of stability, purpose, and self-acceptance.
Anyways, back to what you guys were waiting for… the 10 characteristics of a self-actualized individual in our modern day society:
Continued Freshness of Appreciation (Ex: "You can appreciate again and again,  the basic goods of life, with pleasure.")
Acceptance (Ex: "You accept all of your quirks and desires without shame or apology.")
Authenticity (Ex: "You can maintain your dignity and integrity even in environments and situations that are undignified.")
Equanimity (Ex: "You tend to take life's inevitable ups and downs with acceptance")
Purpose (Ex: "You feel a great responsibility and duty to accomplish a particular mission in life.")
Efficient Perception of Reality (Ex: "You are always trying to get at the real truth about people and nature.")
Humanitarianism (Ex: "You have a genuine desire to help the human race.")
Peak Experiences (Ex: "You often have experiences in which you feel new horizons and possibilities opening up for yourself and others.")
Good Moral Intuition (Ex: "You can tell 'deep down' right away when I've done something wrong.")
Creative Spirit (Ex: "You have a generally creative spirit that touches everything I do.")
Now, an important thing to touch upon is how all these characteristics come together. If you single these out, they don’t totally make you a fulfilled person-But when they come and work together, is when self actualization is there. None of these things have anything to do with materialistic things or with money. Everyone of this relate to your will and drive to become a better person, your want to grow-How you contribute to your own growth, and to the community around you. Think of self actualization as the need to become what one has the potential to be.
The next question is...How does one possibly strive towards achieving self actualization? According to Maslow, there are a few things you can do for yourself. These things may sound easy, but really give them a thought day to day. On your drive to work, when your washing dishes and even throughout your life experiences.
Let down your defenses and live in the moment- Many times, we overthink situations or fear of what may go on. For many people it’s the fear of heights and roller coasters, for some it’s the fear of drowning in the swimming pool. Step by step, learn to let go. Learn to swim if you have to, start on the small roller coasters if you have to. Step out of your comfort zone and face your fears.
Know yourself - Societal norms may conform you to be one way, to act one way, to dress one way. Shut out the noise of the world that tells you how you should think, feel, behave. Instead, pay attention to your own body’s signals. Listen to your own inner voice.
Don’t stop growing - Self actualization is not necessarily an end goal, but rather a process of actualizing your full potential. Daily, you are here to grow. You are here to progress in whatever you’re doing with your all. So don’t give up!
I hope you all enjoyed today’s refreshment in an old concept, modernized to fit our 21st century society today!

Rhetorical Analysis: Bisexuality Doesn’t Exist, Apparently!
As an out and proud lesbian revisiting my conflicting past, I can assure you that the only confusion I experienced was the dissonance between my feelings and societal pressures and influences. The only phase I had was when I pretended to be straight for fourteen years. I’ve had boyfriends. I’ve kissed boys, minimally explored their bodies. It did nothing for me, but my experience with girls and women were something else entirely. I felt the sparks. I felt the fireworks. The butterflies. And in hindsight, reflecting on my own quirky characteristics in my youth, it makes sense that I’ve always been a lesbian. This option was never presented to me - neither in my own home, in the media, in school. I was never exposed to this alternate reality, and it’s because it’s such a taboo topic. Still. That was why in 2014, when I caught wind of this new show titled “Faking It,” I was ecstatic. I was thrilled to have mainstream lesbian or women who love women portrayals. I was excited to see a romantic storyline unfolding between two female characters. I was happy to think that this show would support the community, dismantle the stereotypes, and present what real, queer love really looked like. The reality of this show was anything but.
This show encompassed a lot and managed to turn around their horrendous beginning, but it was well into the season. Essentially, the two main characters, Karma and Amy, were faking being lesbians to gain popularity. Karma hoped to gain a boyfriend with some sort of reverse psychology about making herself more desirable if he perceived her as a lesbian. Amy, on the other hand, really was questioning her sexuality and had developed deep feelings for Karma - and finally had an outlet to give her affection and expand on their platonic relationship. Easily problematic setup. The show went on to shroud the rest of the community, with a gay male lead, a transgender character, an intersex character, a homophobic mother that eventually accepted her daughter - the whole shebang. What I have qualms about is the premise of the show. It glorified the myth that one can “go gay” with the title itself: Faking It. This myth survives because of how they manipulate ethos. Different characters offer inaccurate opinions on identities they don’t experience. Their ethos rests on stereotypical, self-defined representations of being a lesbian and excludes the genuine experience of being a lesbian.
Shane
Shane’s ethos is comprised of his sexual orientation, his friendship with Liam, and his place in the social hierarchy of the school – being popular. Shane is a flamboyant, gay character that is best friends with Liam. Together, they are amongst the most popular at the school.
“Liam thinks I'm a lesbian.” This simple line captures the entire essence of the show, which was the driving force behind all of the drama and antics throughout the series. Ethos is a strong influence here between these two characters. Liam’s heightened credibility comes from Karma, the main character, liking him. Her crush on him makes Karma believe his influence is worth sacrificing herself and her best friend, Amy, by pretending to be lesbians. This assumption is then substantiated at a public gathering, where Shane catches wind of Liam’s inference. The rumor then gains ground fairly quickly, and it travels all the way to the orchestrator of homecoming. Along with Shane, they both try to accommodate this supposed closeted lesbian couple by saying “We accept everyone.” This pathos is playing up to the crowd and the girls. The appearance of an open and accepting environment enables and coaxes someone to come out, like they're trying to get them to. This is an appeal to fear, in a sense, because they don't want them to be plagued with the fear of adversity. She embraces their rumored predicament with this statement and her pathos is impeccable.
To rally support from their assumption of Karma and Amy, Shane takes it upon himself to stand on a table as he makes his obnoxious announcement. This demands attention. People listen to him. The scene takes place in his house, and as a “popular,” he has easy access to most of the relevant student body. Speaking so clearly and profoundly, he has no shame and sees no problem in outing these two girls – regardless of the truth. Outing someone is troublesome in any sense, but it can be traumatic if it is not well received. Shane’s intentions were somewhat pure, but his execution is extremely flawed because he made the announcement to the entire student body, in retrospect, because that was how quickly the news traveled. Regarding Heinrichs, Shane tied together virtue and decorum to sway his environment to create a supportive sphere for Karma and Amy. Saying that Hester High needed a same-sex couple to win the homecoming court, and having everyone in the room second the notion was his virtue.
Shane is an openly gay character. If he suspects that Karma and Amy are lesbians, as a gay man, people are likely to believe him. Hence the gaydar: Gay people can typically spot another gay person from a mile away. His ethos comes from being gay, himself. His sexual orientation, along with his utmost confidence about Karma and Amy’s closeted lesbian situation solidified the notion that the rumor must have been true.
Liam
Liam’s ethos is composed of three things: being a wealthy, attractive male, being an artist, and being Karma’s love interest. As a physically attractive male – white, dark hair and eyes, athletic build with washboard abs and firm muscles – he already gains credibility. If for nothing else, being cute tends to make his words more valid, his intelligence more superficial, his mistakes more forgivable.  As an artist (a sculptor), Karma attributes several qualities to him that make him sensitive and endearing rather than annoying and arrogant. As Karma’s love interest, he can virtually do no wrong. She’s so enamored by him and his aura that what she is met with at face value is exactly what she takes to heart and believes is true. Karma perfectly sums up his ethos with this line: “Liam's parents are rich, but he drives a beat-up biodiesel, which means he's socially aware. His best friends are a gay guy and a feminist, which means he's tolerant and accepting of strong women. And he's an artist, which means that deep down inside he's wounded.” This also works as his flawed craft. Due to Karma’s inferred characteristics of Liam, his craft is engorged. Later in the season, she came to him with her emotional strife, expecting him to be as sensitive as she’d assumed, and he could not play the part. When discussing politics, she found that he was not as socially aware as she’d pegged him, either. When confronted with his take on Karma and Amy’s faked relationship, he exposed some misogynistic biases and proved that he was not as tolerant of strong women. She’d attributed false craft.
“Typical male, determined to prove your virility - by turning a lesbian straight,” Ivy retorted and scathed Liam so fiercely. She correctly accused him of this and he fit the ethos because he is a straight male – portraying typical behavior. The execution of this playing out on the show was Liam’s superficial attraction to Karma with the intention of having sex with a lesbian - fixing a lesbian. In short, he’d wanted to have sex with someone who was depriving him of it by preference. This was subconscious because he was attracted to them, both Karma and Amy, and he’d hoped for the possibilities of coitus. The prospect of a threesome also lingers in the mind of too many men, and this showed up in a later season. Lesbian relationships are not respected, because people often fetishize them. It’s hot. It’s kinky. It’s a fantasy. And though that can be true, it is a wholesome, valid relationship between two humans above all else. This has ties to the myth that one can “go gay” by implying that one can turn on and off their sexuality. A woman can be a lesbian one minute, and please a man the next. Liam’s perception of it was that Karma can be a lesbian all she wants, during the day, but at night, she’s going to be straight with him. He could make her straight, for an hour or two. The sexual anticipation of redemption, winning the prize of access to a lesbian’s core, invalidates the reason why someone identifies as a lesbian: the sole attraction to women. There is no place for a man, no penile satisfaction or gratification. However, Liam had already inserted himself into a concept he has no role in. It is not a negotiable, wishy-washy thing. It is not as flippant as they depicted it.
 Karma
Karma’s character is a little more sullied than his, however. Her ethos comes from her bond and long-lasting friendship with Amy. Karma is manipulative and selfish by nature. Throughout the entire show, her ploys were for her own benefit. More often than not, she dragged Amy through the mud to make it happen, brutally reminding her of her loyalty by listing instances where she’d blackmailed Amy into supporting her. As for Amy, the ethos that heightened Karma’s appeal and gave her grounds to be taken advantage of so often were her romantic feelings for her. Amy harbored a secret love for Karma, doing anything for her because of it. The situation had perks initially, because she was attracted to Karma. Presenting herself as a lesbian provided her with an outlet to explore and simulate what a relationship with her would look like.
“Everyone has a lesbian phase in college.”  Karma’s logos here is that this was expected and accepted behavior. Therefore, it should be fine to experiment and deviate a little for her own personal gain. And when she changed her mind later, it wouldn't be as reckless because it could be deemed her lesbian phase. The “lesbian phase” is essentially “going gay” with different terminology, and it carries much more weight than those who say it so flippantly intend. Being a lesbian is a journey, and it is not always as easy as kissing a person of the same sex and enjoying your new, gay lifestyle. If one doesn’t deal with the anxieties and uncertainties of coming out (or the fear of being outed), the fear of the possible adversity they might face (berating, bullying, abuse, threats, homelessness), or the insecurities they’re plagued with from developing feelings towards a person society condemns, they haven’t “gone” gay. It is not something that occurs overnight. Although “going gay” is not something that typically happens at all, coming out with a new revelation as strong as that tends to warp one’s credibility, later.
Bringing Heinrichs into context, she’s using induction. However, this logos is a fallacy because it is a generalization. Generalizations usually are impeded by the slippery slope, but this is problematic because it is ignorant. The use of the word “phase” is off-putting because especially for lesbian or queer women, it questions and challenges the validity of it. She used ignorance as proof. It perpetuates the idea that sexuality is once again a choice - whereas the real and only choice is choosing to explore your sexuality. Dismissing something as a phase and writing it off as something in passing is damaging. It’s deterrent behavior with the expectation of the perpetrator coming to their senses, but that does not account for those who never deviate from their “lesbian phase.” Some women die in their lesbian phases. Gay men, too.
“Amy, we were invited to the hottest party of the year,” makes the prospect of it sound pretty enticing. The Kairos assisted the choice. The timing encouraged them to go along with it. The happenstance of all of the perks simultaneously made the concept more attractive. The timing of it all prompted less thought and more spontaneity for the instant gratifications of it. It was an easy persuasion to conduct for Karma. Amy sought popularity as well, though she did have qualms about how they were attaining it.
“Straight guys love lesbians, just watch any porno,” is another kicker. Although severely flawed logos, she uses that as more inspiration to follow through with their plan. She will act the part of a lesbian in order to make him fall for her. It seems logical, but is not. At all. Considering Heinrichs, this is the commonplace. It’s a weak stance to take because it has shaky foundations – also because her susceptibility to believing this is skewed because she hopes that this “fact” will work in her favor. This was a constant motif in this show as well. Karma’s entire rationale began with grabbing Liam’s attention, and when she couldn’t impress him on her own, being a lesbian sprouted into her mind. Another misconception is that female homosexuality is in some way to please and entertain a man. It does away with all of the intrinsic factors of being with another woman - the obvious attraction, the possible connection and intimacy shared, the possibility of a love being present. Female bodies are sexualized from birth. It’s almost pedophilic, the expectation of a woman to resemble a baby’s or a child’s with the absence of hair, the smooth silkiness of the skin, and the elasticity and flexibility of the body. It does not come as a surprise that men are attracted to lesbians - it presents them with more than one woman to ogle. This ventures into the realm of pornography, where depictions of lesbian activity are only accepted if the women engaging in the activities are gender-normative - identifying as female as well as presenting themselves as women. The mentioning of pornography in the script goes to show that this is a widely known phenomenon. This is bothersome because beyond the invasion of privacy of another watching something so intimate transpiring between two individuals, it is still directed towards the male gaze. The lipstick, the stilettos, the bareness of their bodies - it is catered to men, even when it is about women. Karma ignorantly supported that with her statement.
Karma loaded up on her Aristotelian appeals when speaking to Amy, there. She used her own ethos by reminding her of her allegiance with “your oldest and dearest friend.” Then, she squared it by packing it with pathos by identifying herself as “the one who never told anyone that you got pubes in the second grade.” She’s persuading her by reminding her of her past altruistic endeavors in Amy’s favor, so that Amy can compromise something for hers. The hole in her plan is that she’d overlooked the required effort of the two, and they cannot be compared. Keeping a mundane secret is not tantamount to sacrificing and exploiting your sexuality for popularity. This contributes to the myth because Karma is under the false notion that presenting a sexuality one does not have is the equivalent of being a good friend. Because they are best friends, Amy should violate her feelings and morality for Karma’s benefit. Because they are best friends, Amy should pretend to be something that she’s uncomfortable with. Because they are best friends, they should fake a relationship so that Karma can swindle a boy into falling for her. But this is not a valid scenario because sexuality cannot be faked, no matter what coercion takes place.
“I guess that makes me the butch one.” That’s not necessarily true. The two are not mutually exclusive, although it is perceived that way. Two women can be femmes, and two women can be butch, and sometimes, they can mingle. It does shed light on the fact that Karma is the feminine one and is getting attention from Liam, and if Amy is the butch one, she has no one fawning over her. That’s a desensitized morality of gender roles. “Being gay finally made me interesting,” Karma said, and with such conviction. The way people receive the news that someone is gay strikes me as overcompensation. Straight girls want gay best friends to go shopping with, but squirm away when he doesn't fit that flamboyant stereotype. Straight boys want a lesbian around so she can be one of the guys, but grow confused when she retains her femininity. This open-armed acceptance stretched a little too far and a little too thin when assessed in different contexts. Girls don't want the gay boys that don't present themselves as flaming homosexuals, sassy and sexy in the way they walk and talk. They don't have room for the more introverted gays (and trust me, there are many outside of the stereotype). It doesn't fit their aesthetic. Simultaneously and funnily enough, they seek gay best friends, but scorn and shy away from lesbians anywhere near their proximity. Males want lesbian companionship, but only the hot ones with the long hair, petite and feminine figures, and those who generally present themselves as women. And if another type of lesbian, say, a butch one, comes around, suddenly they aren't as friendly or forthcoming. It has as much to do with appearance as it does attraction. The infamous “I don't mind gay people as long as they don't flirt with me” trope exists in the minds of too many. It is across the board in males, too - even ones that would testify against being homophobic. Too often in that specific population, they seek friends of the opposite sex, but are adverse to ones of the same sex. This is a widespread problem that needs to be addressed, yet shows like Faking It continue to support the clause by having scenes that represent this without explaining why it is not accurate. Sexuality is not defined by the wardrobe of a person. A girl cannot tie a plaid shirt around her waist, throw on some baggy pants, and deem herself a lesbian.
“And in this school, you have to stand out to fit in, and I’m so ordinary,” is an unfortunate quote that does have parallels to the lives of many. “Let’s be lesbians,” Amy hesitantly agreed, but becoming a lesbian is not and should not be an option for being different. Even writing becoming a lesbian made me cringe, because no one just wakes up one day, deciding to be marginalized. Deciding to be discriminated against. Deciding to disappoint their parents and make their counterparts suddenly uncomfortable. Deciding to have their rights questioned – the value of their lives questioned. By contextualizing it, no one would choose such a thing. That is why venturing as far as identifying differently after an experiment is inherently damaging and demeaning to those who truly bear the burden of coming out.
Faking It and shows that fall victim to improper portrayals of the LGBT community walk a thin line. Diversity is necessary, but it needs to happen seamlessly. There should not be a token gay character, but a spectrum of different sexualities represented. Those representations should come without stereotypes. Those representations should come without disparaging homosexual lifestyles. I commend MTV for venturing to make this show, but I condemn them for presenting it so ignorantly.

Returning to the Earth for Answers ⏤ In Interview With Alana Wilson and Romy Northover
During the Chinese tea ceremony, the tea master is known for the controlled precision in which she prepares and serves the tea to her guests. And yet, the taste of the tea leaves is yielded to her by the uncontrollable forces of nature’s hand. It is the same with clay. A ceramicist manipulates and moulds her piece of earth, but sometimes during firing or throwing an alternate form will persist, sometimes for the better. Try as we might, the earth knows that in order to control something, sometimes, it is best not to.
In November, the “beautiful teachers” of clay and tea could be experienced together at T, an exhibition of teabowls by Brooklyn based ceramicist Romy Northover and the Sydney based Alana Wilson. The pair were drawn to the tea bowl, an ancient form still used in present day, due to its duality of the primitive and the contemporary, a duality present in each of their practices. The tea bowls made from clay and glass can be held, drunk from and purchased, at New York’s Floating Mountain, a modern tea bar that pays homage to the ancient ritual and meditative act of the tea ceremony.
After T’s opening night at Floating Mountain, where traditional tea ceremonies were performed using Northover and Wilson’s vessels, we sat down with them to hear about how their T was concocted.
Photography by Doan Ly
How did you two come up with the idea of T at Floating Mountain and the idea to collaborate?
We met a couple of years ago out of a mutual respect for each other’s work and we talked about doing a show together because we come from a similar place conceptually. We wanted a fairly simple starting point, and thought the teabowl with all of its cultural variations and connections to past and present society would be a great starting point. When Floating Mountain got in contact about their new tea room gallery it seemed like kismet!
The focal point of T is the referencing of the teabowl and the Chinese Dao Cho tea ceremony, but you both transmute this ancient form into something new. Tell us how you translated the tea bowl into a more current landscape?
AW: I think we both work with a sense of duality between the ancient or primitive and the contemporary. Essentially, everything is derived from something and we both feel it's important to remind viewers of the past by referencing history and the way humans once were. However, it's also necessary to present new ideas and connect to current culture and societal values in order for us to connect with our audience and the people around us. By pushing societal perceptions of ceramics as a medium and the utilitarian form as art, we hope to educate our viewer of material boundaries and encourage an acceptance of change and altered perceptual habits. Ultimately, we always honour the history of the vessels and medium but are always looking forward.
RN: There’s a respect for history for what the bowl represents. I could really go on for ages about what the bowl represents to me but I can never find the correct words. There is a reason for the movements, the practice. I learn through doing, and the process of making ceramics, so sitting for tea and learning about the tea bowl through the ceremony has only increased my interest and has opened up many other facets for me personally. But I also think there couldn’t be a more important time to return to the earth for answers.
I love the fact that in the notes describing the exhibition, you talk about the tea bowl as a contemplative object. It is, even in a western sense where it aids us in our own contemplation as we sit, warm our hands around it, sip and reflect, going within. It seems this function is also reflected in how it’s made – the centripetal force that brings things inwards, towards the center. Can you speak to me of your own reflections on this?
AW: Absolutely. I think ceramics as a medium demands an introspective approach. The majority of artists exist as observers and essentially document their observations the best they know how.
The aspect of the circle, cycles, repetition and solitude are all evident in the process and creation of ceramics, as well as conceptually in relation to the vessel and human life.
RN: Clay and tea are the most beautiful teachers. They show you yourself which is magical on a super high level, but they also demonstrate the most basic form of working with the earth and leaves. What I love most about clay and tea it that they are without borders - It doesn’t matter what race, sex or religion you come from, anyone can sit and connect with each other and with nature through simply sharing a bowl.
In what ways would you say each of your works for T differ and intersect each other, and how is this reflective of each of your own processes or aesthetics?
AW: The works for T explore the possibility and essential connection to utilising the vessel in daily life. I think we are definitely both influenced by our own conditioning and personal history. However, we still have a similar perceptual viewpoint of ceramics, and possibly art and the world. I feel we connect on a similar wavelength in terms of visual language, what we are drawn to in current art & culture, and what and how we want to communicate our observations and ideas to the world.
Technically, my work is all hand-built and is generally non-functional although the association to utilitarianism is an important concept in my work. For the T works, I had to pull back on some pieces to make sure they were essentially functional.
RN: I think we come from a similar place in our interest in ceramics, the beauty of the vessel and a simple true love for the material. But our execution technically is quite different. Our cultural backgrounds are also very different which is great as our perspectives translate through the work in a universal language.
Throughout the process of creating the vessels for this project, did you liaise with each other much while you were making them? Or was it very much going into your own corners and carrying out the processes in a silent meditation by yourself?
AW: We did some research on traditional Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese forms, so we were both looking at references of silhouette and traditional details in the same way. From there, the treatments and abstractions were an individual approach. In the later stages, we shared images of work and discussed connecting threads to tie out two bodies of work together to form a concise and balanced selection.
We also both made glass works. We both feel a responsibility to communicate the history of the medium and honour the vessel. We discussed this quite a bit recently in New York, that currently ceramics is really a free-for-all medium and the quality of what is out here is so varied, that the general public’s perception is quite misconstrued as to what is valuable and unadulterated. A lot of people seem to believe ceramics was just invented, and easy to do anywhere by anyone - which it is, as are most things - but the lack of awareness of what is valuable and technically masterful is extremely evident. The representation of ceramics as a medium is diluted by the weekender or flashy artists. By exploring glass, I think we both wanted to highlight the importance of craft, the vessel, the educated artisan/artist and really explore the material boundaries of the teabowl and its history.
RN: We spoke about it and agreed on a starting point of the tea bowl, I think we might have shared a mood board very early on in the process. We are both independent in our process and like to work alone - But we surprised ourselves at the visual references and the cohesiveness of the works!
What was working with glass for the first time like for you both?
AW: A mutual contact put me in touch with Sydney-based glass artist Brian Hirst. I met with Brian and we discussed ideas. I was very much a designer and observer of the process as the glass blowing process requires great knowledge and skill to execute. We spent three days in the glass studio and another few days hand-working and finishing the pieces. There are so many parallels with the ceramics process but also so many differences in the sense that you're almost working backwards into the works. They really come to life in the hand-working process, sanding, finishing, engraving, whereas in ceramics, once the glaze firing is complete, the work is generally finished.
RN: Glass is a beautiful medium that translates to ceramics in many ways. There are similarities between glass and ceramics, but side by side it can also highlight the contrasts. You can sometimes get a better understanding of your known medium through exploring another. The process itself is different, it’s not hands on in the same way but is made from a distance with tools because you don’t want to get too close at high heat. Yet both process share the circles, and spinning. It’s musical, glass making, there are sounds as the glass cools and it even looks as if you’re playing an instrument. It requires finesse and technique so those pieces were made by a Glass expert, with my instruction during the process, not by me personally. I can’t trust myself to keep my hands off the molten glass!
After you drank tea out of your own teabowls during the tea ceremony, was there anything you noticed about the bowls during the ritual that you hadn’t noticed in its creation?
AW: The difference in the materiality of glass and ceramic. The hand-blown glass felt so smooth to drink warm tea from, the scale of the teabowls were probably larger than what I would generally drink from.
In the making process, we physically connect with the clay and form through our hands and body, in relation to the silhouette and final form. Whereas whilst consuming tea, I related to the vessel via my hands holding it, feeling the textured glaze on the exterior of the form, in relation to the lips and face in drinking the tea and seeing the works so close whilst sipping. Body, hands, lips as the contents are consumed.
Also, contemplating the work before, during and after using the piece. Seeing the tea leaves left in the bottom of it, observing and experiencing the forms in a ceremonial setting.
We all have individual daily rituals within our lives, so experiencing my own vessels in a traditional ritual sense was amazing and reminds us of other rituals within our lives which we could enjoy more.
RN: It’s almost impossible to separate it out as it’s such an inclusive, all-encompassing experience for me. I think the tactile area by the foot mine from trimming on the wheel, Alana’s from the glaze. I love that it’s a full sensory experience, touch, taste and sound then there’s the five elements water, Earth, air, fire present in the ceremony. It’s engaging in a very visceral way - a way of elevating consciousness and awareness through the physical body. I find every time I sit for tea I notice something new.
Describe to us each of your favourite vessel created for this exhibition and why it is.
AW: My favourite are the set of six bowls created for the ceremony. They harmonised functionality whilst still having textural glazed areas, they worked as a set of six but each had their own individual nuances, they were marked and numbered in the foot, with a dot of shino for one, two dots for two, all the way up to 6. It pushed me beyond my normal non-functional tendencies to create a repeated form but still nuanced.
RN: I was throwing a piece and couldn’t center the clay because I was rushing so I threw the piece of clay on the floor in a tantrum. When I looked at it on the floor I realised it had made a great shape, so I picked it up and trimmed a foot on it. It sits like an irregular platform, a mini floating continent. Impossible to duplicate.

Methods and Techniques of Medical Astrology
Astrology is the way of specifying future and the character of a person through the alignment of planets and the stars. Astrology does not work and can't predict events or characters. Even the Eastern astrology is event oriented, so they are going to tell you what's going to occur in the future with grater precision and what happened before. The application of astrology would be to use it in order to analyze individuals' birth charts in order to read personality, psychological traits, and also to some extent fate.
Arab era is the Western astrology of today's immediate ancestor. Our astrology might be in fact the successor to that flow of astrologies. Based on a few of the basic ideas developed in Babylon and produced from the Greeks, this kind of astrology is also called 'judicial' or 'genethlialic'. This is the form of astrology that the majority of us are familiar with today, whether or not we're skeptics or believers. The question of why people believe in astrology is much more interesting than the specifics of the horoscope. Psychologists have demonstrated that clients are happy with astrological predictions as the processes are individualized in some rather obscure way.
Astrology is best known by studying how it started. Astrology is the earliest and at the exact same time now the most popular of all pseudosciences. Astrology is also used to deepen understanding of our nature. As more and more astrologers develop their counselling skills, this psychological approach has increased considerably in the past 30 years. Astrology is Magical Thinking, which has given us forms of alternative medicine and creationism. It is at odds with scientific reasoning and the practitioner is put by it squarely in opposition.
Because individuals believe for 12, Astrology is pseudoscience. No examples are given by him here. Astrology is, put simply, the analysis of this correlation between the astronomical positions of these planets and events in the world. Astrologers think that the positions of planets at the time of a individual's birth, Moon, and the Sun have a direct effect on that person's character. Astrology is a great mix of science, art and craft. Its very best aspect is that no matter how much one learns he can never adopt its knowledge.
The belief in astrology is that the positions of certain celestial bodies either influence or correlate with a persons character characteristic. Before, those studying Astrology used monitoring of celestial objects and the charting of their movements. Prior knowledge of astrology is not needed. The four degrees of study include all essential astrological knowledge in the very beginning to having your personal, successful practice. Astrology is so called because it ariseth in the celebrities; since Theology is so called as it flows from God. To reside is, using a concupiscence, to bring death to himself, and also to eat of the Tree of the knowledge of good and bad.
A thorough bibliography of astrology is beyond the scope of this FAQ, but a few books are included. The curious reader is recommended to visit a well stocked bookstore. But since the heavens were never intended for these functions, astrology is a practice that is wrongful and dangerous. Stars were made for calendar maintaining and for announcing God?s glory . The lessons here are for everyone who wishes to learn astrology is performed and how to do 19, how. Because science needs that knowledge of a topic must come before evaluation they are specially for skeptics.
For if astronomy is the study of the movements of this Heavenly bodies, then is the study of the ramifications of those motions. The astronomers of the world assumed a division of the world where all had been change and mortality, the immutable bodies of the worlds ruled over the terrestrial or sublunary sphere. But astrology is about just money and love. A number of questions are answered by Astrology. Vocational Astrology is the art of helping others .
Shamanic Astrology's practitioner is educated in the unaided eye knowledge and experience of the night sky, and also the rhythms, motions and cycles of the cosmos. Astrology is also an art-form--just one which lends itself to fast sketches and complex portraits of couples people, businesses, nations and more. Astrology can clearly have religious and spiritual undertones as evidenced by research of early Egypt. Astrology is unscientific because of the fact of the precession or the shifting of constellations. The ancient astronomers consequently failed to take it into consideration in their own system and weren't aware.
Even though entertaining, Sun sign astrology is a somewhat helpful, and superficial application of a ancient and complex science which dates back thousands of years. Discover how astrology can be used fortify your wisdom and to inform your choices. Astrology is the ancient practice and research of the stars and planets. Its history goes back to Babylonian times. Astrology is such a version.
Wholistic Astrology is a method of interpreting a horoscope that all aspects are considered. We can see tendencies in external areas such are career, societal needs and finance. That is the reason why astrology is known as the "Science of Indications". With no attempt to overcome the momentum of any force or thrust of action, the signs suggest what will be, and in any case, astrology reveals the timing of trends and certain influences. Today, some astrology is presented this way, but this isn't accurate "traditional astrology".
Did you know that Astrology was considered science in man's early history?
Astrology isn't a superstition, some old thing or even pseudo-science, but a true science of human expertise. Its symbols leave space for the vagaries of human behavior, that which can not be reduced to formulae. Since astrology is still a real competitor for respect a practice and patronage perhaps the hostility exists. I hope that the hostility may be dying among historians and social scientists and that a genuine understanding of this influential practice and belief. It does not necessarily mean that astrology is accurate in predicting human behavior or events to a degree significantly greater than mere chance. There are customers who believe that their astrologer has provided guidance to them and that they are accurately described by their horoscope.
Astrology is benign, it's an entertainment. Whatever its glories, it appears a five-and-dime glance of the cosmos. Astrology is perhaps the most historical subject and also in a way the most discounted. It's the most ancient because astrology was around as far back as we've been able to investigate the history Bengali baba of mankind. Rather, they like to offer evidence --stories people tell about how accurate they believe astrology is. Evidence people not quite good at correctly reporting encounters and remembering, and also is not acceptable in a real science as it's too easy to leave out the experiences people have.
Astrology is based on arrival charts for an person. Moon, the Sun and planets' Place is plotted on the zodiac In the moment of birth. Astrology isn't a quick study. Traditionalists used to state it requires a pupil one transit of Saturn to become proficient. Vedic Astrology is part of a holistic, integrated knowledge system and its consequences can be bolstered by interoperating with its "sister" sciences. The Vedic Astrology process is kind because not only is a person told what might occur, but they are presented with a list of potential remedies or corrective activities to offset the amount and quality of karmas which are returning to them, as seen from the birth chart.
For the sake of simplicity, it would be tempting to state that this newspaper on astrology at the Renaissance begins with Petrarch (1304-1374) and finishes with Shakespeare (1564-1616). Petrarch, "the first person of the Renaissance," wasn't any fan of astrology and railed against its fatalistic leanings. "Leave free the paths of truth and life... those globes of fire cannot be manuals for us... Illuminated by these rays, we don't have any need of those swindling astrologers and lying prophets who drain the coffers of their credulous followers of stone, who deafen their ears with nonsense, corrupt judgment with their mistakes, and disturb our present life and also make people sad with false fears of the future." By contrast, Shakespeare's perform some 250 decades later gave the world the expression "star-crossed lovers" and would possess the murder of two young princes at the hands of an evil king credited to a lousy resistance aspect. What triggered this, although this proof in literature indicates a radical turnaround in public view of astrology?
It's very important to note that the changes brought forth in the Renaissance had a plethora of manifestations. Since Richard Tarnas points out in The Passion of the Western Mind, "the happening of the Renaissance put as much in the sheer diversity of its expressions as in their unprecedented quality." The Renaissance didn't only express itself via literature independently (or at the exact same time or place for that matter) but through art, theology, the burgeoning of scientia along with also the discovery of new lands in the world as similarly a fresh outlook on the heavens. It will be asserted, it is particularly important that commentary on the learning climate prior to the Renaissance is researched in order to establish a point of contrast.
When reflecting on the Renaissance and its glories in art, literature and music--and astrology--it's important to keep in mind that the remarkable changes of this era happened against the backdrop of this plague, warfare, religious strife, economic depression, the Inquisition and ecclesiastical conspiracies. In this fascinating period of history, over this expanse, an effort will be made to determine the interest in and development throughout the Renaissance of astrology.
The Twin Stars: A Change from Aristotle to Plato
The discovery and interpretation of texts has been an instigator of transitions ever, particularly the works of Aristotle and Plato. On popularity and the influence of those Greek thinkers, Arthur Koestler commented in his publication, The Sleepwalkers. "Insofar as their influence upon the near future is concerned," Koestler wrote, "Plato and Aristotle should rather be known as twin celebrities using one center of gravity, which circle round each other and alternate in casting their light onto the generations that succeed them.
Each will have his turn to enjoy being "in fashion" whilst the other went out of fashion. According to Koestler, Plato would reign supreme then Aristotle's work could be re-discovered, until the 12th century and after two centuries, when the world tired of Aristotle's rhetoric, Plato would re-emerge in another guise. In the period up to the development of the Renaissance, it was Aristotle's star that shone and though it could be difficult to believe given modern Christianity's lack of approval for astrology, it was a scholastic theologian who combined Aristotle, Church philosophy and astrology.
Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) appeared to have been at the right place at the right time with the appropriate things to say. Scholarship and the translation of Aristotle's work into Medieval Latin supposed a revival for Aristotelian thought during Aquinas' lifetime. These works of Aristotle became a significant project for this Dominican monk, a student of Albert Magnus (1206-1280), himself an Aristotelian translator. Tarnas pointed out that "Aquinas transformed Aristotle to Christianity and baptised him." The growth of Aristotelian thought during Medieval times gained astrology because of its opinion that "everything which occurs in the sub-lunary planet is caused and regulated by the motions of the celestial spheres." Brahe's discoveries invalidated the idea of a separate and different "sub-lunary world.
But there remained the attunement with a greater influence and of celestial bodies into the earth. Both astrology and alchemy utilized these techniques of Aristotelian logic they were not bound by pedantry nor entirely subject to the Church's dogmaastrology, often linked to studies and codified by Ptolemy, was taught in universities. Certainly their influences are greater.
Aquinas was confident and clear about the influences of these stars since they were perceived now: "The majority of men... are governed by their passions, which are reliant upon bodily appetites; in these the influence of these stars is clearly felt. Few indeed are the wise who are capable of resisting their animal instincts." To put it differently, there was a direct correlation between what occurred in heaven and what occurred on earth. Aquinas added the memorable and important words:
"Astrologers, therefore, can foretell the fact in the majority of cases, especially when they undertake general predictions. In particular predictions, they don't attain certainty, for nothing prevents a man from resisting the dictates of the lower faculties. Wherefore the astrologers themselves are not to say that 'the smart man rules the celebrities' forasmuch as he rules his own passions.
Hence he sidesteps.
Even with Aquinas' support, this is not to say the Church was supportive of all facets of astrology: there have been limitations that are quite clear. Medical astrology was acceptable, as treading on God's toes, whereas enquiring to the future might be deemed. Aquinas, for the time had reconciled along with also the Church giving the proviso of will rather than absolute determinism.
As the Renaissance dawned, there can be little doubt that had re-emerged despite being mocked simultaneously in three cultures that are different. Besides Petrarch's comments, the Muslim scholar Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) condemned astrology as "all guesswork and conjectures based upon the (supposed existence of) astral effect and a resulting conditioning of the atmosphere." The Frenchman Nicholas Oresme, in 1370, composed "Many princes and magnates, moved by hurtful fascination, attempt with vain arts to search out concealed things and to investigate the future." For these men (including Petrarch), astrology put the overpowering temptation facing man to discover his future. Having established astrology's existence the question of how it grew in popularity despite being so soundly condemned remains.
