The room probably had an official name, but you had taken to calling it the map room in your head since you had sat in there with the maps of Fareha and Caspian’s people. That was where the servant led you. A guard had come to the door and told you and Eloise that it was safe once more. After returning Eloise to her room, the guard explained that two Reiman soldiers were waiting with Caspian, Lom, and a mixture of Farehian and Narnian soldiers.
You took a deep breath to steady yourself before you let the servant open the large doors. With your crown on and your head held high, you stepped into the room. None of the men were sitting but they all turned to face you.
“Queen Y/N,” Caspian greeted with a short bow as he moved to your side. “Negotiations for a truce were requested and they asked for your presence.”
You gave Caspian a nod as he led you to stand with Lom. The captain gave you a low bow and stayed at your side as you were directed towards two Reiman soldiers. The younger one looked a bit overwhelmed, but he hid it well. The older one had a look that reminded you of Lom.
“Well here I am. I believe I am the reason you’ve come to Narnia with an entire battalion of men?”
The older one stepped forward but immediately frozen when Caspian, Lom, and all of the soldiers present stepped forward as if to protect you. He held his hands up to show that he wasn’t armed before he stepped back to his original place.
“Queen Y/N, there has been something going on for a very long time within Reiman and Fareha. We have been at war since before you were born, but it was with the death of your father that Reiman finally got the upperhand.”
You didn’t need to be reminded of that. And you especially didn’t want to be reminded by your enemy.
“Yes, I’m aware of the circumstances surrounding the animosity between Fareha and Reiman.”
The man’s eyes darted around the circle of people around him and then back to you. You did notice that his eyes had lingered on Lom, but it seemed that whatever he was looking for, he didn’t find.
“With all due respect, I don’t believe you are fully aware of the circumstances. And that is the reason that my battalion of soldiers boarded a ship as soon as we heard you had come this way.”
“If your plan was to attack the queen here in Narnia and believe that there would be no repercussions, I hope you realize now that you were wrong. Not only would that make you a target for Fareha, but it would put you at odds with Narnia as well since we are now allies.”
Caspian spoke so passionately that you couldn’t help but feel a bit warmth fill you inside. You had turned to watch him speak and when you turned back to the Reimani soldier, you were surprised to see relief. Surely he would not want you to be allied with Narnia as that would make you powerful. Possibly even more powerful than Reiman.
“Why did you come Narnian to find me?”
The soldier’s shoulders tensed as he met your eyes.
“There is someone betraying you in Fareha; someone who has been doing it for a very long time. They have been working with Reiman forces to take over bits and pieces of Fareha for years. And before that, they worked with the Reimani king to kill your father.”
You stumbled backwards but Lom’s hand was there to keep you steady. His face was a mask of disbelief and fury as he made sure that you were alright. Once you were righted once more, you cast a look over and caught the surprise and disbelief on Caspian’s face as well.
“You accuse someone within my trusted ranks of these atrocities? What is your proof? This is the word of an enemy, nothing more.”
The younger soldier held his hands up and was careful to show that he wasn’t going for a weapon. He reached into the vest of his uniform and pulled out a letter that was folded over and over, the parchment worn. He held it out towards you but Lom took it. He inspected the outside and handed it over to you without reading the words.
With a steadying breath, you opened the letter. It was old, the date back from… before your father died. The letter was addressed to someone you didn’t know, but the handwriting was familiar. Even more familiar was the name at the bottom.
You skimmed the words and then had to start over. As you soaked it in, you could feel your hands start to shake.
“This… this cannot be,” you breathed as you held the letter to Lom. Once he had read it and come to the same realization as you, you covered your mouth and shook your head. “I left Percival in the care of the man who had our father killed. Admiral Waylen is a traitor to Fareha.”
Caspian moved over to accept the letter from Lom. Once he read it, he held it back out to you. You folded the parchment carefully and put it into the folds of your dress.
“He has made it so that your forces are either not where they need to be or kept the numbers small enough that they were easily taken care of by whichever Reiman force they met. He even had them lower their banners during certain battles so that the other side would not realize they were fighting Farehian soldiers.”
You turned and looked at Caspian. That was how your men had fought Narnia so many times without Narnia realizing what was going on. All this time you had made Narnia the enemy but it was a betrayal from inside. Admiral Waylen who had guided your hand so many times in matters of war.
He was the man who brought back the story of your father falling on the battlefield. And by the contents of the letter in your possession, he is the reason your father fell. He led him into a trap.
“I left my brother with that man,” you said in a low voice as you reached up to grasp your pendant.
The moment your fingers wrapped around it, you felt as if you were transported even though your feet were firm on the ground. You swore you could smell the candles you preferred in the manor back in Fareha. And was that… could you somehow see the bookshelf in the library?
“Y/N?” Hands were on your shoulders and your face, drawing you out of the vision. Before you, Caspian looked worried. “Y/N, what is it?”
You released the pendant and then reached back up to trace your finger over the edge of it.
“I think… I think I just had a vision? I felt like I was back home, in Fareha. I was in the library, I’m sure of it.”
“How is that possible?” asked Lom as he came to stand beside you and Caspian.
Caspian’s eyes were on your pendant. You usually wore it with your crest facing outwards, but when you had released it, the pendant had spun and the green stone stood out. He reached up as if he couldn’t help himself and touched the pendant himself.
As his fingers connected, you felt as if you were floating. This time instead of seeing Fareha, you were at the springs. The water was moving sluggishly, as if time had slowed down. The rainbow of colors under the water looked dim except for… except for a stroke of green.
The same green as your necklace.
“The spring,” you said as you were once again in the map room. You met Caspian’s wide eyes with an understanding that he had seen that too. “My pendant is made from the same bedrock under the spring.”
He dropped his hand from the pendant and shook his head.
“How would that be possible? Wh–where did you get that pendant?”
“My father had given it to me, but it used to be my mother’s. She said if I wore it, they would always be with me.”
Lom cleared his throat and drew your attention to him once more. He looked embarrassed and you wondered if it was because the way that you and Caspian were standing so close, intimate as if no one else existed. And then you realized it wasn’t embarrassment.
It was shame.
“My queen, there is something I need to tell you about your mother. And where she’s from.”
Everyone left the room at the request of Caspian. The Reiman soldiers were not being held prisoner, but they were asked to stay in the palace for a while longer. And as Caspian started to leave, you reached out and grabbed his wrist. With just your eyes, you asked him to stay.
“Tell me Lom. Please.”
Lom bowed his head for a moment before he looked around the room.
“She immigrated to Fareha as a child from a land that was war torn and forgotten. Her mother was sick and died on the trip. A family found her wandering the plains, half dead and delirious. They took her in and claimed her as their own. Your grandparents, the duke and duchess.”
You released Caspian’s wrist and stepped closer to Lom.
“Where was she from?”
Lom turned to look at you and even though the truth was in his eyes, he put it to words as well.
“She was from Narnia, my queen.”
It felt as if your world had been split open at the seams. Your mother was from Narnia? And the necklace you had been given as a child had come from the springs in Narnia, the heartbeat of magic itself?
You reached up and touched the pendant. Carefully you wrapped your fingers around it and focused on your mother.
Once more you were transported. Instead of your mother, you could see Percival. He was looking over something on the desk in the library. You watched as his hands fiddled with the ring he always wore, the one that used to belong to your father. It held the same stone as your necklace.
“Percival?”
Your brother spun to look around, his eyes moving right over where you were standing.
“Y/N? Is that you?” His eyes grew wet with tears. “Is it true then? You are dead?”
Dead? You took a step forward but it didn’t draw you any closer to him.
“I’m not dead Percival, I swear to you. I’m alive, but you’re in danger. You can’t trust the admiral. He’s a traitor.”
Percival shook his head, his eyes moving over to the door. He rotated the ring a few more times before he looked around the room once more.
“You’re just a ghost. A siren to tempt me to the evil ways of our Narnian enemy. I will not fall for it. I will rain destruction down on Narnia for killing my sister.”
He turned to the desk and slammed his hands on the surface. It broke the connection and shot you back into the map room with Lom and Caspian. You stumbled forward a bit and Lom caught you.
“My queen?”
“I saw my brother. His ring, it’s just like my necklace. He could hear me but he didn’t believe it was me.” You looked over at Caspian with wide, tear filled eyes. “He thinks I’m dead. Worse than that, he thinks I was killed by Narnians. I think he’s planning to attack.”
“He couldn’t,” Caspian said as he came over closer to the two of you. “Fareha is in no condition to attack Narnia, not even on the best days. Your brother wouldn’t be stupid enough to demand it, would he?”
No, not Percival. He was strategic minded, always went with the best plan. It was something you had envied.
Lom broke your short reprieve of relief.
“If Waylen is controlling your brother, he might have faked a truce with Reiman. Percival is young, still easily swayed. With his working with Reimani forces and the Reimani king, he would have enough force to wage a war.”
It was his plan all along. Waylen wanted you to go to Narnia. Whether or not you were actually killed didn’t matter. He just needed to be able to control your brother since you were harder for him to guide into what you would consider a massacre.
And your brother would do anything for you.
Once more you grabbed your pendant, your mind focused with a determination you had never rivaled. This time when you were transported, you were ready.
It was your study. He was sitting at your desk, his fingers tapping out a rhythm as he looked over a missive. You moved around him as best you could until you could skim the parchment.
It was from someone with the Reiman crest. All you could make out from your vantage point was that the warships were being readied on the west.
“You won’t get away with this Waylen,” you said forcefully, enjoying the man’s sudden fear as he looked around the room. “I know your plan and I will stop you.”
He stood up and checked the door, but it was shut. He looked at the windows but they were closed.
“What is this? Some magic from Narnia? If the queen is still alive, she won’t be for long,” Waylen said as he swung out, trying to fight whatever specter he believed was in the room with him.
“If you hurt my brother, I will kill you myself,” you promised before you released the pendant.
The anger must still have been on your face because both men stepped towards you. You looked at the table and the maps that were still spread out there.
“I know where the warships will be. We’ll need to sail in from a different direction so that they don’t know we’re there. But this ends now.”
———
In the morning, you would board your ships back to Fareha, but this time you wouldn’t be alone. Caspian had gotten his men to get their ships prepared, as well as the Reiman ships that had come to offer their allegiance to you and to Fareha instead of their own kingdom. There was a fleet much larger than anything Reiman could have.
You slipped quietly out to the stables. Lom would be angry that you snuck out, but you had to do something. He would forgive you.
Esmerelda was in her stall and you rubbed her nose before you continued towards the back where Evander’s stall was. When you got there, you found it empty.
“No,” you whispered as you looked in the neighboring stalls.
It had to be Evander.
“Looking for this?”
You turned around and saw Caspian sitting atop a saddled Evander. Your shoulders sagged as you realized he was there to help you, not to stop you.
“I think I know what I have to do,” you said as you reached out for Caspian’s hand to be brought onto the horse. “I can’t explain it, it just feels right to me.”
Caspian pulled you in front of him and wrapped his arms around you to get the reins. You felt safe in his arms; safer than you’d felt all day.
“I trust you.”
He urged Evander out of the stables and towards the path that would take you to the springs. As you rode, you felt something growing inside of you. That voice that you always relied on was there once more.
Courage. Strength. Belief.
You could do this. You could heal Narnia. It was the best way to succeed against Reiman and Waylen.
After the long ride, Caspian helped you off the horse and towards the woods that you would have to walk through. There was just enough moonlight filtering through the trees to get the two of you through, but Caspian kept his hand in yours the whole way. And once you were in the clearing, your breath was taken away again.
More springs had dried up.
The two of you made the way down the curved path to the colorful spring. The water seemed to almost be frozen and the colors were dull. The green stroke of color you had seen in your vision was dull as well, but you knew where it was almost instinctively.
“Wait,” Caspian said as he tugged you back towards him, not letting you approach the water yet. “I need you to know something. Even if you hadn’t been able to help Narnia, even if you didn’t have that pendant, I would still… I would still…”
You smiled up at him. Then you carefully leaned up until you could brush your lips against his. The kiss was soft and chaste, but it said the words that he couldn’t form.
Somehow, you loved this king you had only met a week or so ago. It made no sense, but it was there. Like the pendant you wore, it was meant for you. This was all laid out as fate a long time ago.
“Even if you couldn’t help Fareha, even if you couldn’t help me,” you said against his lips, one hand in his hair, “I would still as well.”
He smiled and bent in to give you one last kiss before he released you. You laughed and turned towards the still water once more.
Slowly you crossed over to the edge and bent down to where the green streak of color would start. The water was only to your ankles, but it wasn’t cold. You placed your hand against the bedrock gently. Then you reached up to unhook your necklace. You carefully held it over the water and looked up into the sky.
“This belongs to Narnia and I want to give it back.”
You lowered the necklace into the water. Deeper and deeper until you felt it touch the bedrock. Then there was a burst of color and you were nearly rocked backwards and into the water. Hands were there to pick you up and pull you from the water.
“Are you–” he began but he didn’t get the words out.
It was raining. It felt warm against your skin and you tilted your head up into it. There was something magical about it. You turned to face the spring and watched as it seemed to grow and grow before you, the water rushing once more. The colors lit up and sparkled under the moonlight.
Your hands went up to the sky as the rain poured down over you. You had given up a piece of your parents but you didn’t mind. You knew they would always be there for you, with you. And that pendant wasn’t yours, not really. It belonged to Narnia.
“It’s not over yet,” you said as you turned to face Caspian, wiping the rain water out of your eyes with a smile. “We’ll have to get Percival’s ring as well, but I think this is the right thing. I think this could be the thing to save Narnia.”
Caspian wiped some water off your face and leaned in for another kiss.
“It’s not just Narnia that you’ve saved,” he whispered against your mouth, the words almost swallowed up by the gurgling spring behind you and the roar of the rain above. “You’ve saved me as well.”
You closed your eyes and wrapped your arms around his shoulders.
He had saved you too.
A post for voting will be up right after this.
