This clip from The Monkees will always fucking kill me
There's just... so much going on
• Mike's undies saying hello as he starts off the struggle cycle by getting his leg caught and then trying to transform into a bat until Davy helps him stand up properly (and for a brief second he's rocking a crop top)
• Peter just giving up halfway and letting gravity take over (also rocking a crop top) before he grabs the ladder again and does a split in the air before getting down
• Micky going down the ladder like it's a fireman's pole and landing on top of Peter while he's still struggling to get his head out of the ladder
• Davy carrying Micky bridal style to help him down while Peter still fumbles with his shirt
Some big traditional fanart of The Monkees I did for my grade 10 art final last year. I did use @autmnalmanac 's Monkee fanart for poses and background for the drawings at the bottom. And I used @saveferris 's Monkee fanart to draw whatever Micky is holding in the doctor scene. Because I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to draw it when I was watching the footage.
I was way into The Monkees TV show when I was a young teen during their 80s MTV revival, hadn't thought about it much since then but holy crap it makes so much sense now. Possibly neurodivergent characters? Possibly ace characters? Casually intimate shippable dynamics in the group? Check, check, and check. Plus of course the things I knew I liked about it at the time: cute actors, humor ranging from silly to quirky to surreal, and just a lot of fun. What a stupidly great show.
One difference I love between The Monkees showverse and Head-verse is that The Monkees are popular and “made it” in Head, but not really in the show (except for when Peter played harp).
It just makes them feels so different because would there be this huge crowd idolizing them like gods/christ-figures in the show? Probably not. I mean there are French girls chasing them in Paris… which confuses me a little. But maybe The Monkees in Paris is much closer to Head-verse than showverse (like Monkees on tour tho that feels closer to real life)
It’s all very interesting to me.
In Head the show is 100% a show they are on/trapped in, but in The Monkees show it’s also referenced as a tv show a couple times by the characters of the monkees lol. So they blend.
But when Micky or anyone says like “the monkees never made it in the show” I’m like but they did in Head. But I also realize there was probably the assumption no one watched Head for a long time.
the whole situation in Find The Monkees could've been easily avoided if one of the Monkees had thought to take out one of their own singles from their jukebox to give to hubble benson
Random thoughts on The Monkees (specifically the show)
Not eight year old me DESPISING Micky Dolenz for no logical reason except that I thought that he was the ugliest person EVER and that he LOOKED like a monkey, while being obsessed with Peter Tork because I thought he was a bird and I loved his nose and his hair-flips.
Now I’ve come to the conclusion that I still like Peter Tork, Davy Jones is still my self-insert (damn I even ended up being his height, okay cruel universe I get it.) and Micky Dolenz is not ugly! I was very mean to him as a child! He looks fine! But eight year old me would be scandalized that he’s the only one left and that I never got to meet Davy “reason David Bowie had to change his last name” Jones.
Some cereal for your troubles kiddo.
(My dad had some stupid recurring nightmare about some creepy guy in a mirror saying “Rice Krispies” over and over and that’s all I could think of when I saw that gif)
I was also a Wickersham Brother in Seussical at one point so I can say for a fact that I have been a monkey (if not a Monkee) and in fact got to Monkey Around, as people say.
