"The Missing of Clairedelune", by Christelle Dabos.
"With that, Mother Hildegarde stuck a hand in one of her pockets. This gesture might have remained anecdotal if the whole arm hadn't started to follow the movement, as if sucked into the void.", from The Missing of Clairedelune.
"I loved God, yes, but I hated that book he'd open at the drop of a hat. God, on the other hand, amused him enormously. When God was happy, he wrote. When God was angry, he wrote. And one day, when God was in a very bad mood, he made a huge mistake. God broke the world into pieces.", from The Missing of Clairedelune.

MEGGGGGGG! Hi! I am back with "Kate tells Meg what she is reading because she is bored and it is fun" time! I was away on vacation all last week and somehow only read one book. I had convinced myself that I would read more, and brought three books + my kindle, and then smacked myself when I didn't because I COULD HAVE PICKED UP MORE BOOKS WHILE I WAS AWAY. Tsk, let's hope I learn from this mistake this time, it's been a while since I've flown with the intent to go shopping and adventuring and not just visiting family while staying put.
BUT! Before that I finished the Audiobook of Good Omens with the show as the voice cast and I LOVED IT, and now desperately want to rewatch the show and reread the book in some sick cycle of never ending insanity. I highly recommend both !
Then, the book I read was Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Canas, and holy shit, this book is so atmospheric. I liked all the characters, and the romance was a little slow burny which I adored. Sometimes, the main couples interacts drove me a little crazy, but it was always resolved and they seem to trust each other so much that I just was kinda swoony no matter what. It was the perfect end of summer with still hot day but cool nights read, with a good mix of spooky in there too. It was really a solid 4-4.5 stars for me.
Now, I am reading the Missing of Clairedelune by Christelle Dabos and I hope I have the motivation to finish the Mirror Visitor series, because these books just capture my attention so much. The world building is incredible, and yeah, it can be clunky sometimes, but I feel like it works really well with our main protagionst and narrator. Also, a slow burn over a series??? sign me the FUCK UP. While working, I am listening to the Collected Regrets of Clover by Mikki Brammer and I like it so far, it's interesting. I like the concept, and Clover is a good narrator, but literally only like 10% into it, so we will see how it goes. I feel good!
anywaysssss I miss you, and I hope you are well :D I am back on my book buying ban for the rest of the year, so yell at me if I mention buying another book from a bookstore!!
THIS IS SUCH A TREAT OMG also also I love how we both enjoyed some Neil gaiman work recently!! I reread the ocean at the end of the lane and I'm still blown away by how good it was. Of course Elena knows has been another top read this month and im looking forward to more cozy/spooky fall themed books in October!!! (also set a book buying limit for the next few months!! No more than 8 books 😉)

What have been your top reads of the year so far? Mine has been The Ballad of Never After, AGGGTM trilogy, I'll Give You The Sun, Hell Bent, Deathless, Almond, Beartown, and a few more!
if i'm not counting rereads, this time it's real by ann liang, conversations on love by natasha lunn, and painted devils by margaret owen are probably top three reads this year so far, but i've also had a fair amount of five star reads/really enjoyable ones (half a soul by olivia atwater, chloe and the kaishao boys by mae coyiuto, and the missing of clairedelune by christelle dabos)! i'm giving an honorable nod to happy place by emily henry, even though i read the ARC last year! i've been meaning to read beartown for ages, as well as some of fredrik backman's other stuff (i own anxious people but i still haven't gotten around to reading it and i really want to read a man called ove) 🤍
mini little celebration!

15, 42, 86, and 124 please?
Hi!!
15. a book rec you really enjoyed
A Marvellous Light, which I believe I got from your blog! can't remember if you recc'd it or if I just saw it on one of your lists tho!
42. a book that made you want to scream by the time you got to the end
The Missing of Clairedelune! The end of that book is a real turning point in the series from "historical fantasy with lots of enticing worldbuilding questions in the background" to "fantasy adventure where we are going to answer those questions and maybe kill god, if that's what this thing tormenting us is."
86. a book with an insane plot twist
Harrow the Ninth! I don't want to spoil it but the last quarter of that book is absolutely bonkers (in the best possible way).
124. the book you’re currently reading
Juniper and Thorn by Ava Reid, Seasonal Fears by Seanan McGuire, and Fortuna by Kristyn Merbeth. Though the last 2 are paused while I finish Juniper, which is a library book. Also not sure if I'll go back to Fortuna after Seasonal Fears, since that series is taking longer to get through than expected and idk if I'll be in a sci fi mood when it's done.

A lil reading update:
A couple of days ago I finally got the third book of the Mirror Visitors series (by Christelle Dabos) from the library! I have been waiting for it for weeks, and being a poor student I couldn’t afford to buy it lol.
So far, I am enjoying it. I am about 34% in and the story is really weird without Thorn, plus the book is very different from the first two, but I am enjoying seeing a different Ophelia, acting alone and finding herself in always biggest messes.
Any thoughts?

MEG! i've heard really good and cute things about Half A Soul! I picked up a copy last year, and I have not had a chance to read it but I think I will try to pick it up soon, especially if you like it!
Still reading the Missing of Clairedelune - which is still so good but I just have been reading slowly recently. I haven't really scheduled time to read and I think that's what I need to do this week. and I am still listening to The Collected Regrets of Clover which is good - I am about half way through. It's kind a sad girl book and not really what I was expecting, but it's definitely not bad. Just out of my comfort zone.
I hope you are having a good start to your week! I wish a fresh start with this Monday, and good vibes all around. I sent you that Kendall Ask in a sleepy haze and i am glad it made you laugh. I see Kendall and immediately start thinking about you and daydreaming about eights... I wonder why hehehe
Oh maybe this is a sign for you to try half a soul too, I'll let you know how I like it hehe!! And ooh I think right now is perfect for sad girl books like im here for the melancholy and the despair!!!! AKSKSKS and I'm honored you think of me when you see him, and EIGHT??? absolutely love to see it ✨ ♥

men are so unironically funny and moronic because in two of the books i’ve read this year (the queen of nothing and the missing of clairedelune), the men both confess their love so nonchalantly as if it’s not a monumental thing to confess one’s undying love to their lovers!!!!!!!!!!
cardan says “i love you” and that mf just walks away. he LITERALLY walks out the room
and thorn, bless his ice cold heart, LITERALLY says “by the way, i love you” before he’s about to *** himself, LIKE HELLO??? by the way???
I UNDERSTAND BOTH PEOPLE ARE IN LIFE THREATENING SITUATIONS BUT WHAT IS GOING ON IN THEIR HEADS???

seriously though, I absolutely have to finish a winter's promise today. I'm getting so annoyed with how long it's taking 😩 for the past couple days I've been thinking I should spend an extra hour reading and get it done, but then I end up watching youtube or playing video games instead.
anyways, as of now I'm on page 428/491, and I absolutely will finish it today!!

When you realize in the missing of clairedelune Thorn counts the steps in Hildegard's workshop and Ophelia's all like "who counts steps??"
Then in the memory of babel when she and Blaise are going to the cabaret, she's all like " a hUndREd aNd ThIRtY StEpS LAteR"

OH YOU’VE READ CHRISTELLE DABOS SERIES??? Please i would LOVE to hear your thoughts, i read them a couple years back and have been desperately trying to get someone to talk to me about them since
I read the first three (in English, A Winter's Promise, The Missing of Clairedelune, The Memory of Babel) in the past week, mostly in the car or waiting around for people to get in the car. And they were absolutely perfect books for whiling away a lot of time in the passenger seat! Extremely expansive worldbuilding, full of murder and fantasy intrigue, and a lot of very endearing and distinct side characters.
I was especially impressed by the family spirits, and their development. It would have been easy to lean into a buzzfeed quiz-style sorting for the Arks, with their different ruling gods and varied powers. But the narrative is clear that everyone’s collective magic won’t make up for suppression and control; the family spirits themselves go from distant and untouchable, to capricious gods, to...well, children stuck in arrested development, frequently puppets of a greater agenda.
I wouldn’t necessarily put it among my favorites---it was a little too YA for my tastes---but it was a sweeping, expansive story and a lot of fun.
..............that being said! The absolute first time they described Thorn as “tall. just, absurdly tall. a dude composed of mostly spine, cold irritability and competence,” I was immediately reverted back to thirteen and absolutely had to finish. That the books themselves were good was just a bonus.
