OK I’ve slept and had some coffee and now here you go internet my Sunday afternoon Critical Role feelings. Spoilers up to the end of ep 29 which is where I’m at today:

1) I want to start a Laudna Book Club where we just talk about Laudna for like. . .two hours a week. I’m fascinated by all of the choices but also by the character design and I just like. In some ways am excited to get to the Death Arc bc i think it confirms a lot of the thoughts I currently have but in other ways I wish it wasn’t happening because I really like just like. Turning characters over and over to see the different facets and theorizing on how they tick and I do think that a literal magical mystery tour of Laudna’s Trauma Stuff is going to suck some of the fun out of it BUT ALAS.

2) Also I have a lot of quiet Orym feelings I don’t know why he’s getting me so good but I love a good gay soldier with a dead gay husband in this universe apparently and this is doing it for me.

(Actually this is a lie I know exactly what it is because Gay Revenge Quest always hits me so much harder, like the concept that he’s just quietly oh yes I just wish to help the Ashari I’m just curious about the secrets of the moon who can say why with this quiet exterior? But then deep down he’s like fuckin. I’ll do a million pushups a day because all three feet of me is going to find the person who murdered my husband and BEAT THEM TO DEATH WITH MY SHREDDED ABS. Catnip. Delicious. Yes please. This does nothing for me when the wife is in the fridge but make it queer and I’m all over it.) 

3) ALSO I keep thinking about Imogen and Laudna and what I really keep thinking about is Imogen and Laudna separately but also Dusk there and like. The layers of love but also the layers of selfishness and like. I don’t want to write a coffee shop AU I want to write fic about just how messy they both are I know the internet is frothing over this as a slowburn where they love each other but they’re dumb but I’d argue that like. It’s not about them realizing their love it’s about each of them needing to grow because they’re both, right now, too messy and too raw to really love each other in the way that either of them needs. And so they can love each other but they can’t be in love, you know, and it’s - that’s where the stories are and it’s DELICIOUS.

4) Look I know I haven’t finished watching the full Ruidus Lore Drop bc there’s more in ep30 but also like. This isn’t not Calamity 2, yes? Calamity 2? Yes?

(Like, my vision for Calamity 2 was somehow related to Betrayer Gods + Opal bc I am still pining for a batshit bonkers EXU/C3 crossover arc but WHATEVER MATTHEW)

Bc like. The characters don’t know this but we the viewers know that Calamity was basically: attempt to move the leylines to travel between planes + attempt to breach the barrier between Betrayers and Prime Material Plains + apogee solstice = Oops Gods Everywhere.

And IF there are secret gods on the moon and the moon is secret and the moon is maybe already traveling between planes and we know that the Feywild is full of pre-Calamity tech because they Fey went there to wait out the Calamity like. Who’s to say that the Unseelie aren’t building a version of an Astral Leywright and who’s to say that it won’t a) melt together the Feywild and Prime Material Plane and/or b) release the Secret Moon Gods.

(Who’s to say that the Secret Moon Gods haven’t already been released and are being worshipped in the Feywild bc we know that being believed in is what gives gods their power)

1. Slowly trying to claw my way out of the Pandemic Work Hole, sort of succeeding.

2. I ordered Legends DVDs for the last time EVER and it made me so sad; I’m gearing up for a rewatch but I know I’m going to cry so much. I wanted them to keep making that show all the way until 2042 so that we could watch one-armed Oliver Queen sulk by himself in a warehouse in real time.

3. Hi Tumblr, I miss you tremendously. I know I am still here but I miss talking lots about superheroes kissing.

4. I have not been Between Fandoms in years, I am still waffling between working out all the fanworks I still want to make for Legends & Supergirl and searching for the New Thing but it’s WEIRD, you guys.

5. I am slowly, ever so slowly, working my way through Critical Role. Still mad that a stranger on the internet sassed me for saying Imogen and Laudna were the new Lena and Kara especially because I’m extremely correct about them. Tempted to write a very long fic out of spite but also I need to catch up on ::checks watch:: 56+ hours of canon first, so. . .unlikely.

5a. How do I find the particular slice of fandom that like. a) is not made of children, b) will not try to cyberbully because i have not seen previous campaigns c) will not try to cyberbully me because I’m comparing a ship they like to a ship they don’t like d) is totally cool about me trying to work out the mechanics of how a living corpse girl has gay sex. Is that anything?

6. That said I DID start re-listening to the EXU core series and fuck me I love it so much more than C3, I want to write 1039483204 Opal fics and it’s just going to be like. Me and my friends that I bully into reading it but whatever, whatever, it’s cool.

I was really not stoked to watch the Solstice and post-Solstice eps, mostly bc I knew that I was going to have to sit through a LOT with no Laudna and no Orym and tbh they are the characters getting me through Campaign 3.

But I forgot how much more fun Matt is with Aabriya at the table, they play off of each other in a way that makes CR so much lighter despite the fact that they are both level 20 5e lore ninjas. What a delight.

Laudna half-expected the heart of the stone to be hollow. It felt so - full, humming with energy the way that it was. But, she supposes, that's why magic is magic. It's nothing but rock, right to the core. Craft supplies. That's all this is. That's what she tells herself, as she casts and uncasts mending, turns it over in her fingers again and again to check her work. The spell is meant for physical things: torn dresses, sweaters that have unravelled in the wrong way. It can repair the seam in the stone, make it look as good as new, but it can't bring the magic back.

Things I’ve been into this week:

1. Got my COVID booster, spent 3 days in a Side Effect Fever Nest and am just now coming out of it, science rules but also science hurts just a little bit.

2. Re: point 1, am now a scant 40 hours behind on Critical Role C3 which feels like ~practically nothing~. I have several complex theories on the ways in which EXU is secret lore dumping for C3 and am struggling with how to find the people in this fandom that are Cool To Engage With. Accepting recs if you know anyone.

3. I checked my Switch profile and did you know that I’ve played 375+ hours of Animal Crossing since March 2020 because fuck me I sure didn’t. It’s that ten minutes a day thing, it catches up. Anyway I’m really proud of my island and since I’m still working through 2020s pop culture please know that I just now discovered the acnh.guide app which has made it a million times easier to actually figure out which bugs and fish I’m missing. I’ve made a ton of progress on completing my museum which makes me happy. I’ve also made a twitter account to share photos of my island build bc I’m really pleased with how it’s (slowly) coming together, if that’s your jam I’m @mermaidlamp on Twitter and I’m happy to make a tumblr to crosspost photos to if there’s interest. It’s night themed so it’s mostly just me on an eternal quest for lamp diys but maybe that’s your thing!

4. Last night I was rewatching some Buffy and I got to the scene in Once More With Feeling where Willow and Tara have a whole number about oral sex and like. Just thinking about the ways in which people make art about queerness has changed and the ways in which - like - when you couldn’t show two women kissing on TV you had to think a little harder? And the ways that intimacy and longing and desire can be communicated without kissing and the ways that on the one hand we’ve made such progress and on the other hand I think there’s an art that’s been lost? And maybe this just circles back to Everyone Is Beautiful But No One Is Horny but I really felt it, you know?

5. Has anyone played RDR Online recently? I’m downloading RDR2 onto my PS5 finally and I want to play Sad Cowboy Horse Sim because Laura Bailey being bad at describing horses made me absolutely pine for the RDR2 horse engine, but also as with point 2 I don’t have time to get cyberbullied by children. I can always play infinite post-game and I probably will; I could start a new game on the PS5 but gosh that epilogue broke my heart, you know? Anyway, I like to know my options.

6. Has anyone actually played the RDR1 port on the new PS Store Classics Collection? Does it work? Is RDR1 actually a bad game when played with fresh eyes or does mourning Arthur Morgan along with John add a certain je ne sais quoi that compensates for the pre-2010 graphics. If it helps I’m very bad at video games and am very attached to a few of the modern accessibility features to make games work for me.
