August WLW in Media Rundown

“The Macaluso Sisters” is about the slow-acting tragedy that is the passage of time, and its effect on relationships marred by regret and recrimination. But it starts in an un-self-consciously joyous register as five orphaned sisters, ranging in age from 5 to 19, prepare for a day at the beach. This rambunctious tribe, reminiscent of Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s “Mustang” — all hair and limbs and squabbling over sandwiches — is led by the responsible eldest, Maria (Eleonora De Luca), a rangy young woman who dreams of being a dancer, and who will, before the day ends in disaster, share a tender, delirious gay kiss with a pretty friend, while chasing the scattering leaflets they’re distributing in an open-air cinema.
The film is about the sisters, her sexuality is just there.

WORST MOVIE POSTERS OF 2021
And now, here are the worst atrocities of movie marketing last year:
1. A Loud House Christmas (Stare at the poster and never take your eyes off at the reckless Photoshop imposing just from Lincoln’s face. This was their official poster!)
2. Apex (Bruce Willis looks like the Voldemort in Sorcerer’s Stone.)
3. Eternals (5-year-olds can do this minimalist teaser in MS Paint for a second.)
4. Home Sweet Home Alone (The bottom tagline is a clear warning.)
5. Intrusion (It’s like a bad photographer wanting Frieda Pinto to paste her face on a glass.)
6. Lady of the Manor (You can make a Reddit page to write all the things wrong in the poster.)
7. Spider-Man: No Way Home (Doctor Strange looks like he is holding in a fart. At least it is better than the poster for Far from Home.)
8. The Boss Baby: Family Business (No thanks!)
9. The Macaluso Sisters (Too many doves. And too many unfitting elements.)
10. The Misfits (Pierce Brosnan looks unnatural. And what is wrong with Nick Cannon’s chest? Also, grammatical error in the tagline. Where’s the period?)

Someone in my sisters groupchat said that she went to bed and woke up to her house burning. Her pets and belongings were all gone. This is super devastating and May Allah Subhanahu WaTaala help her through these difficult times. This really made me think about all the things that I have and I had to question myself about the last time that I showed gratitude to my Lord. I am so comfortable with the fact that I have a bed to sleep in every night and never really thought of how it can all be taken away in just one night. It is important to realize that we did not achieve anything without Allah and it reminds me of story of The Man with the 2 Gardens in Surah Kahf Subhanallah. Anywho, please donate if you can!

EMMA DANTE - LE SORELLE MACALUSO
THEATER AND SICILY - NEVERENDING AUTHORS
I have already told you how the theater in Sicily has a long history, a language that privileges it and a culture in which it is deeply rooted. Talking about the authors I have to start by saying that most of them are unknown, in the sense that many of the great and small Sicilian authors who have taken turns in the history of the Sicilian Theater are not known. The Sicilian Theater is characterized, from the Middle Ages to today in various forms. There are Carnival Farse in which the people made fun of themselves or a social class, so that, being popular expressions, there were hardly any well-defined authors. Then there were the "Intralazzate" of the sacred representations in which they were told the sacred events that had more educated authors than those who created the farces but still unknown. Similar to the Farse were the Vastasate, purely popular representations in which the "vastasi", that is the poorest part of the people, represented his life, with the pains, the dramas and the criticisms of the other social classes. Next to these depictions there was the Opera dei Pupi, that is the puppet theater that put in scenes, in a codified way, the "Canzone di Rolando" and the Paladini of France. Also here, the pupars created the texts and recited them in a traditional way. In the late 1800s and early 1900s the first great authors appear, some of whom as Nino Martoglio were also directors, captains and authors of the first feature films. Among the first authors I cite De Roberto for personal reasons, an author who spoke of the failure of the Risorgimento and of the disenchantment of the Sicilians in front of the new Italian state realized by the Piedmontese kings. After De Roberto here is Luigi Capuana who applied to the Sicilian reality the naturalism of Emilie Zola who was baptized "Verismo". Capuana with Martoglio, director and director of music, and then with the actor Angelo Musco he found the ideal interpreters of his works. Martoglio himself and Musco did not hesitate to fish, from time to time, in the stories of Verga that of Verismo was the greatest exponent. On this fertile ground appears Luigi Pirandello who with his works creates a modern theater, with his characters hiding behind masks and his ironically tragic works. Contemporary of Pirandello and his great friend, we have Rosso di San Secondo which takes up the tragic side of the Sicilian soul. Among the modern authors we have Leonardo Sciascia whose works became successful theatrical texts. I also mention Giuseppe Fava, killed by the Catania mafia whose last play "The Last Violence" is perhaps a prophetic present of what would happen to him. But there are many modern theater writers and among the many I have chosen for this post Emma Dante that as well as director is perhaps primarily author with many strongly Sicilian works that, together with the tragedy, unite, like in the "Macaluso Sisters" the Sicilian irony . Emma Dante represents the many and infinite authors who make the Theater one of the Arts in which Sicily, is mirrored and wonders, recreating and reinventing itself to each new generation.
TEATRO IN SICILIA - AUTORI SENZA FINE

On the day of graduation, as all of us graduates were walking into the convention center, I had chills. Although my husband, sisters, and I made the trip to Minnesota, the reality of reaching that goal didn’t fully hit me until that very moment. I thought “Wow, God you really made it happen for me”. Another life milestone God had carried me through to completion! —Broken to be Blessed, Louise Beaubrun-Macaluso
