Study of The Alien Mind
Chapter Three: Technology Versus Human
Masterlist
Summary: The police ask Doctor Kreizler to come to the department to look at the wreckage that was found in the Institute's courtyard. Being the person she is, Alexstrasza joins him. There she meets the Issacson brothers and they are very interesting characters, to say the least.
Warnings: Period typical misogyny, weapons, threats of violence, attraction to physically strong women.
____
Going to Laszlo's house now, to which Alexstrasza assumed she would be staying because the Institute housed young children, they went inside and almost right as they did, a ringing sound was heard throughout the house. She cocked her head as Laszlo went to go nearer to the sound and when the sound stopped, she heard voices so she assumed it was some sort of communication device. Like phones, but a bit more.... underdeveloped.
The Doctor came back with a heated face, like he was mad. "We have to go to the police station." He sighed, leading Alexstrasza back out the door from his house and back into the carriage. "The station please, Stevie." He said to the boy driving it as he got in with the woman.
Alexstrasza sat across from Laszlo like she did before and studied him for a moment as the carriage started to move. His beard was mostly fitting to his face and his hair was nice and neat. She would even call him attractive. He had a bunch of beauty marks and small moles on his face. Laszlo didn't seem to be married and she found herself wondering as to why that was, the man was on the older side and, during this time, they married young.
"Where did your weapons go?" Laszlo asked suddenly, his deep brown eyes meeting Alexstrasza's light blue ones. He's been curious about this ever since she came out of that dressing room. He was certain she didn't leave them there, she was a warrior, she wouldn't leave a perfectly good weapon unless she really had to.
The alien woman laughed a little bit, her nose scrunching as she did. Alexstrasza opened her coat and pulled out the handle to one of them and clicked a button at the bottom, the blade appearing in a swift motion. "A retractable blade." She explained simply, "As for my blasters.... they're in my waistband." She hummed, looking outside the window of the carriage again. There seemed to be more people as the carriage kept going. Peculiar....
Once the carriage came to a stop, Alexstrasza saw people crowding around a certain building. Must be the police station. She chuckled as she thought of it. The two of them got out and tried to make their way in but the people just were not moving from their spots and some of them were even yelling at Laszlo. Alexstrasza started getting frustrated with not being able to go anywhere so, discreetly and without trying to make her eyes glow, she flexed her hand a little and some space started to clear up for them to get into the station. Laszlo looked at her, intrigued. Just how powerful was she?
The police let them in and Laszlo guided Alexstrasza through the station to get to a big open room which housed her pod, pieces broken off it and in boxes to be taken somewhere smaller to investigate further. There were only two men doing this though. "Lucius, Marcus." He addressed them, causing them to turn quickly. Once they did, they both stared at Alexstrasza, appalled by her more masculine attire. "This is Lucius and Marcus Issacson." Laszlo introduced them to her.
"Why is she wearing a suit?" Lucius wasted no time in asking this. Laszlo sighed, rolling his eyes at him.
"Why don't you wear a dress?" Alexstrasza shot back, narrowing her eyes. That shut him up, for a moment.
Laszlo took over the conversation and asked, “Did you find anything in the pod?” He was afraid they’d find something and it would change humanity forever or something but then again, Alexstrasza seemed very calm about the whole situation.
"Not really...." The other brother, Marcus, answered. "A whole bunch of technology that hasn't been invented yet and we're not sure if we could even try to understand how it works." That was a relief for Laszlo, he just hoped no one would try to understand it and begin to.
As this conversation went on, Alexstrasza got closer to the pod, observing it in it's broken state. "We believe something came out of the pod since it looks like something broke out of it." Lucius said this time, "Something with immense strength but.... we haven't seen anything like that, especially not recently." Laszlo glanced at Alexstrasza and nodded along to Lucius' words.
"Do you think we could be dealing with something other worldly, Doctor Kreizler?" Marcus asked, fiddling with his hands. The concept of aliens always made him nervous for some reason. Lucius wasn't opposed to the idea but he didn't dwell on it as much as Marcus did.
Before Laszlo opened his mouth to speak, Alexstrasza answered. "The possibility is very likely. Since you're in the room with someone from another planet." She said, giving the men a smile after. They went quiet for a moment before Marcus and Lucius laughed at her. And now.... she was getting angry. Growling, Alexstrasza took out one of her swords, the blade appearing with a click and speared the weapon into one of the metal tables. That properly shut them up. And Laszlo, well he.... found that attractive. That level of complete power.
"Y-You're the alien?" Lucius asked, fixing the glasses that rested on his face. A lot of men thought women were weaker and he was no exception of that, but in meeting Alexstrasza, that mentality seemed to flip on him. Here was a female alien, stronger than the three men in that room combined. Probably even in the whole of the police station.
The woman smiled and stuck out her hand for the two men to shake. "I am Alexstrasza. Of Kelvoria. And I am about...." She hummed for a moment, trying to remember her age. It was a longer number. "One hundred and thirty-five years old." That surprised all of them. She was really that old?
Laszlo coughed to gain their attention. "If you find anything of interest, please telephone me or come by my house." He told them then added, "Also ask Sara Howard and John Moore to come as soon as they can, please." He requested. The doctor thought it would be kind to introduce Alexstrasza to them. He especially thought Sara would like her. They were very similar.

Laszlo Kreizmas
Imagine... big fluffy snowflakes are falling from the sky. Sunlight is barely peaking through the dark gray clouds above. A warm fire is crackling in the large sitting room fireplace. The front doors open, causing a gentle gust of cold air to enter the house as well as a few snowflakes. Cyrus and Stevie are helping each other carry a lovely Christmas tree inside.
John Moore just so happens to be stopping by to give his friends a couple of tins of freshly baked cookies his grandmother has made. Seeing Cyrus and Stevie struggling with the tree, he sets his packages aside and helps them. Eventually they get the tree inside and wipe sweat from their brows. John retrieves the tins of cookies and hands one to Stevie and Cyrus.
He asks if Dr. Kreizler is in, which he is. He's sitting by the fireplace reading like he usually does. The two friends say hello and they enjoy a drink together after John hands Laszlo a tin of cookies as well. They talk about various things, including how some of the kids at Kreizler's institute have gone home to spend the holidays with their families.
Laszlo expresses his worries for all of the kids, especially since Christmas can be a dark time for a lot of them. But John assures his good friend that everything will be fine. Another surprise visitor arrives, and this time it's Sara Howard followed my the Issacson brothers.
Sara brings ornaments for the tree. Marcus and Lucius are just there to spend time with friends and have a few good drinks together. Even though they're Jewish they stand and watch as the others help each other decorate the tree. Sara hands out an ornament to each of them, which she has customized to fit each of their personalities.
Once the tree is finished everyone heads into the sitting room for refreshments... everyone except for Laszlo and Sara. She pulls one last ornament from the bag she brought with her. It's a simple ornament, yet beautiful all the same. "This is for Mary. I thought you'd like to do the honors, doctor." She says as she hands it to him. Sympathy filling her eyes for her friend's broken heart.
He takes the ornament and places it on the tree. It fits perfectly as if it was the missing piece that was needed. "Thank you, Sara." He says softly as silent tears fills his eyes, yet a small smile spreads across his face. Dispite the fact that Mary was no longer with them, he knew she was watching down on all of them.

My great reading reawakening of 2016
I enjoy quantification and data. I started tracking books I was reading back in 2009, but my data shows 0 books read in 2010 and 2012; I fell down on my data gathering.
In 2013 I began again, spurred on by my older brother's "Book Club of One" which aspired to read a book a month. I'm pretty sure he met his goal for years.  However, I also selected 12 books for each year and never read the 12 books I selected in 2013, 2014 or 2015. In fact, in only 2014 did I read 12 books at all!
For 2016, one of my yearly goals was to read 20 books. I hadn't read that many books in a year since 2011.
In 2016, I read 110 books.
This was a result of two tools working in conjunction: Audio books and the iOS podcast app Overcast.
Overcast is designed for podcast subscription and playback and boasts two amazing features: Smart Speed and Voice Boost.
Smart Speed algorithmically removes silence between words. It's seamless. Nothing is choppy. (of course if I'm listening to dramatic readings or podcasts like This American Life, The Moth or 99% Invisible I lose a lot of the art). But for audio books it's amazing.
Voice Boost equalizes volume. Both features just work.
Add in variable speed playback (I go between 1.6x and 2.0x) and I can blaze through spoken audio, very, very, fast.
Overcast displays the actual playback speed in real-time that includes gains from both Smart Speed and variable speed playback. Usually the actual playback speed hovers around 2.5x but can be a lot more for deliberate audio book narrators.
I use Docast.me and Dropbox to host my audio book .mp3 files and create a podcast RSS feed accessible by Overcast.
There's a decent amount of research on how well the human brain absorbs and understands spoken words, even at high speeds. That said, my 2017 reading goal focuses more on quality listening, note taking and application.
Onto my 2016 data 86% were Non-Fiction books 14% were Fiction
Tumblr media
My average rating (how much I enjoyed each book) was 5.99 (on a 1-10 scale).
Only 2 books received a 1 (The Master & Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov and  The Art of Presence by Eckhart Tolle).
3 books received a 10 Grit by Angela Duckworth The Signal and the Noise by Nate Silver Quiet Power by Susan Cain
My most common rating was 6 (30/110)
The average rating of Non-Fiction books was 6.22 The average rating of Fiction books was 4.53
Favorite 9 Books
Tumblr media
I read multiple books by the same author:
Tumblr media
 I read 27 books published in 2016.
I read 13 books published in 2013.
Tumblr media
The oldest published book I read was The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli (1532) I also read The Book of Five Rings by Musashi (1645)
 Most Read by Month
Tumblr media
I wanted to see which Subject Areas I read the most. I don't know of a good database or taxonomy of such Subject Areas.  So I went through each book's Barnes & Noble listing and listed down a few of the subject areas they list. Unfortunately, some are super general "Business" and some are very specific "Gothic Horror" or "Epidemiology & Biostatistics."
Tumblr media
Most read area: Diets (10)
This is no surprise to me as Fitness and General Health are subjects I'm quite interested in.

As I really got going in 2016, I prioritized the shortest books on my "To Read" list, to pad my numbers.
For 2017, my goals are more focused:
Read at least 30 books
Always select the top prioritized book on my list, regardless of length. This means that longer books may actually get read this year!
Debt by David Graeber Cyberspies by Gordon Corera Money Master the game by Tony Robbins Steve Jobs by Walter Issacson Open by Andre Agassi The Age of Napoleon by Will Durant Future Crimes by Marc Goodman Titan by Ron Chernow
Listen to each book specifically looking for insights to apply to my life

I’m unbelievably happy with how 2016 unfolded. I’m excited to continue reading books in 2017!

Study Of The Alien Mind
Chapter Seven: Tests of The Mind
Masterlist
Summary: First tests commence at the police station.
Warnings: Toplessness, needles, blood.
____
A few days after the little fiasco at the Institute, the Issacson brothers sent a carriage for Alexstrasza and Laszlo to ride to the station so some tests could be done. Alexstrasza didn't understand why she had to go in one of the suits she got because they were probably gonna try to find out about her anatomy but she guessed that was because it was going to be saved for later.
Once they arrived at the station, Laszlo led Alexstrasza out of the carriage, offering a hand to her. She took it graciously, keeping their hands intertwined as they went inside the station. Surprisingly, there were no press or other people outside the station which she was relieved for. Alexstrasza didn’t want to be asked questions she didn’t even know the answer to.
They both went inside the office that Lucius and Marcus shared for their research. Alexstrasza cocked her head, it seemed they were preparing things, like needles and little pieces of paper which she couldn’t really tell what was written on them. She assumed they were questions.
“Good morning.” Marcus greeted the two of them, leading Alexstrasza over to a chair to sit down. “For today, we want to ask a few questions and take your blood. We may want to do others but we will tell you if that is so.” He explained. The woman looked over at Laszlo for a moment who took his place at her side, sitting next to her.
“You’ll need to take off your shirt for this.” Lucius said simply, Laszlo’s eyes widening while Alexstrasza just shrugged and started to take off the top half of her clothes. She was left in a sports bra, but of course, they were confused as to what that even was.
The alien stretched a little, her muscles being more defined by it. It was a weird sight for these three Victorian men, a scarred, strong woman around them. They knew, deep down, this was normal for her. Normal for her to be the strongest in the room, but it wasn’t for them. Women were just seen as things. They were seen as pretty for a little while, like toys or even clothes, you don’t care for them much after they get all dirty or worn out and you throw them away. But Alexstrasza…. It was as if she owned herself, daring anyone to even try and throw her away, she’d come back and make you think twice. As if she even liked you in the first place.
Not to mention the fact that she had tattoos, not many people in this era had tattoos. And if there were any who did, they were seen as dangerous. Alexstrasza’s tattoos did add a certain level of danger to her but also beauty…. They were dark lines with gaps of skin in between them, it seemed very space-like to Laszlo but the lines also defined her body in the most beautiful way he’s ever seen. The tattoos, or was it just one big one? Ranged from the edges of her neck, going down to her elbows and even to her lower back.
Marcus grabbed a needle, looking up at Alexstrasza as he slowly sunk the needle inside her arm. As the blood started going inside the needle, all of the men in the room were alarmed because it was blue. Like a dark, navy, blue. None of them have ever seen anything like that before. Not to mention the fact that she barely even flinched as Marcus took her blood.
“Is that normal for you?” Lucius asked, his eyebrow furrowing as he studied the needle, now full of her blood.
Alexstrasza nodded at the brothers. “Yes, it is. My blood is blue. Some people’s blood is green or even yellow. I’m assuming the human’s natural blood color is red, yes?” She asked and the rest of them nodded.
It was weird to think blood wasn’t red. That was just how their anatomy was made up and all the animals that they knew of had red blood as well, they just assumed extraterrestrials would have that too. But they quickly found out they shouldn’t be assuming anything.
Laszlo truly did try to keep his eyes off Alexstrasza, as a courtesy to her, but the slight definition in her stomach and arms made him want to stare. This “crush”, as he called it in his mind, was evolving. It was being nurtured by being around her so much, but it was accelerated because of this instance.
“Now, as Lucius studies your blood, I’ll be asking you just some simple questions about space.” Marcus explained softly, a good-natured smile on his face. And it visibly calmed Alexstrasza, causing Laszlo to be jealous of that. She was always on guard it seemed when she was around him.
“What planet are you from?” He asked.
Alexstrasza responded, “Kelvoria. Distant planet from here, I think. But I’m not sure, I didn’t come here from there anyways.”
“Are women usually warriors where you’re from?”
“Yes, women are. They can also hold other important positions of power. From what I’ve heard from my adoptive father, I was the child of a queen who ruled by herself.” That surprised all of them, usually queens had a king that would make most of the important decisions.
“What are your scars from?”
“Training. Missions. A plethora of different things.”
“On a scale of one to ten, how powerful are you?”
“Eleven.”
“Do you mean to cause harm to this planet?”
“No, I don’t want to hurt anyone. Unless they deserve it.”
“What weapons do you usually use?”
“Swords or knives. Sometimes guns but it depends on my mood.”
“Do men in space underestimate you?”
“Yes, but I like that. Surprises them.” This Alexstrasza laughed as she said.
“Would you hurt us?”
“If you did something bad to me, I wouldn’t hesitate.”
“What can you do with your powers?”
At this, A;exstrasza didn’t answer immediately. Even she didn’t know quite the extent of her powers. “I don’t quite know exactly what I can do. But I know telekinesis, moving things with my mind, kind of like power surges through my hands, healing, mind control, which I barely ever use, flight, holograms, and also making physical things myself and others can touch. Like I can technically make my own weapons but I really don’t like to. It does take more energy than normal.” She explained, starting to put her shirt and things back on.
“What about reading minds and instilling thoughts in their head?” Laszlo asked suddenly, almost afraid Alexstrasza was doing that to him. But it was completely not true.
Alexstrasza shrugged a little as she tied her grey corset, grunting a little. “I can do that. But I use it very rarely. Unless I feel I’m in danger, I don’t use it. I know the dangers of something like that.” She smiled a little at Laszlo, putting the star back on the knot of her tie.
“If it’s alright, I would like to test your physical abilities next.” Lucius spoke up, adjusting his glasses nervously. Being in a room with a powerful alien would make anyone nervous…. Except Laszlo.
Alexstrasza hummed, buttoning up her blazer once she put it back on. “I wouldn’t mind that. Although we will need to do it somewhere else.” She furrowed her eyebrows a little. “I don’t think this is enough room for physical tests.”
“Yes, that’s why me and Marcus were thinking about meeting up at the gym nearest to the station. There we can test your strength and weapons ability.” Lucius explained, the blue blood spinning around in one of the newest machines they had.
Laszlo was amazed already with how honest Alexstrasza was, and seeing her strength and abilities in action would just make him fall even harder than he was. It was like he was falling face first off one of the mansions in the New York suburbs.
