Yeah the VS Angel Wing rings were extremely expensive custom pieces that VS CMO Ed Razek had made for the 16 VS Angels that hadn't quit by 2016 because VS stopped paying the Angels 7 figure salaries and started paying them 6 figure salaries that were on the lower end of six figures and Taylor, because the VSFS 13 & VSFS 14 were the two most watched VSFS in the entire 20+ year history of the show because of Kaylor, so that man would've done almost anything to get Taylor and Karlie to come back and do more VSFS together

Somewhere on the social media of the guy who custom-made the VS Angel Wing rings he mentioned that they're worth like 16K each and that Razek himself commissioned an extra ring for Taylor so he could give it to her as a gift, so the only way a Z-list nepo-baby without any type of contract with VS like Donaldson could've ever gotten ahold of one of those rings is if she committed felony Grand Theft Larceny and stole it.

Razek actually sexually assaulted one of the Hadid sisters in front of dozens of other A-list models in a dressing room once just because he felt like it and knew he could get away with it because nobody tried to stop him the other thousands of times he's sexually assaulted women at work over like 25 years. Literally the ONLY women that Razek has ever treated vaguely like a human being when he worked at VS was the VS Angels, which BTW the VS Angels was a thing that Razek himself came up with, and there's only 42 of them and there will never be any more because VS has done away VS Angels.

So ayone who thinks that a wannabe Z-lister nepo-baby with no actual affiliation with VS like Donaldson got a custom $16k ring from a VS executive who'd sexually assault her a thousand times over before he'd ever treat her like a human being let alone give her expensive custom jewelry that he got made for 17 specific women who achived more by the age of like 15 than Donaldson will ever achieve in her entire life is so beyond fucking delusional that it's not even funny.

Like get real, these dumbass Gaylors who are obsessed with that Z-lister are not only some of the most pathetic and delusional people in Taylor's entire fandom, they are also some of the stupidest by far.

Gaylors *DO* deserve to be bullied actually, if they want to keep saying delusional things with no basis in reality because they've got a weird fetish for making up shit that could've never happened in a million years because the thing they're lyingabout has literally never worked like that so they can treat Taylor like a Barbie Doll in the moronic collective delusions they mastubate to, then I'm all for the rest of Taylor's fans banding together and crushing the Gaylor fandom out of existence.

Gaylors are a detriment to Taylor at this point and there is no real reason to stand in the way Taylor's other fans who actually care about her as a person harassing them all off the internet for being delusional freaks without a grip on reality. These Gaylors are legitimately delusional and don't understand the difference between easily debunkable made-up bullshit lies with zero substance and real actual life and hard facts, they're so fucking beyond disconnected from any form of reality that they could easily become a danger to Taylor and her loved ones because these Gaylors are just the Swiffer version of Q-Anon fanatics

I honestly just find it mostly funny… until I see gullible gaylors falling for it. Most seem to be quite young. I just want them to grow up with critical thinking skills. Not to sound like an old fart, but I feel like so much of that is lacking these days.

Why don’t people trust science?

The doubt of scientific expertise is dangerous, especially during the weird times we live in now. In 2020, when vaccines were still being produced, we saw rising anti-vaccination views on the internet. Anti-vax groups discussed safety concerns, conspiracy theories, and alternative medicine, including false causes and cures of the COVID-19 virus. Some people went as far as claiming that the new 5G technology was the cause of the virus.

Today, with so much information available to us, it is tough to distinguish the truth from all the fake news on the internet seeking clicks and easy money. Without a proper STEM education, someone can easily be fooled by any fraudulent speech as long as it sounds “sciency” enough. This lack of education is certainly not due to the lack of science being done.

Each year, more than 1 million scientific articles describing new technologies and discoveries are published. And that’s only in the field of medicine! Why, then, do people still believe that radio waves can cause a virus infection?

That’s because the information that scientists are publishing is not available to the general public! And there are two reasons for that:

1. Scientific papers are published in closed journals.

The first reason is very straightforward. Most of the academic articles are published in journals that demand a high fee for access. Even scientists sometimes have trouble accessing articles that are relevant to their field of research. To access such papers, one would either have to pay, get access through a university VPN, or look for an alternative supplier, such as the shadow library Sci-Hub.

This, of course, makes access to scientific information much harder. Without an actual need, someone outside of STEM is unlikely to go out of their way to access academic papers. Suppose the information is not accessible on the first page of a Google search. In that case, someone who’s simply curious will probably not find the most up-to-date information on the subject.

2. Scientific papers are not written for the general public.

Let’s say that people had good access to scientific articles. Even if this was the case, people would still have a hard time understanding what is written. Whatever scientists write is complete gibberish to the general public! Hell, sometimes it’s gibberish for me who reads scientific articles daily!

How can we expect the general public to be informed about science when what scientists write is unreadable without background knowledge? A traditional scientific paper is full of jargon and acronyms that make the text-heavy and hard to follow.

I’m not proposing that we change the way scientists report their findings. After all, all the technical terms are essential to fully describe the subject that is being discussed. Instead, I’m revisiting the old idea that more streams of reliable scientific information that is tailored for the general public should be available. Today most of the published science is seen only by scientists to produce more science to be seen by scientists. It rarely exists towards the ‘real world.’

The consequence is that the public develops a mistrust towards scientists because they have no idea what scientists do! Today’s science is almost a black box that outputs something every once in a while when the new discovery is exciting or sensational enough to be shown on mainstream media.

For this reason, more scientists should get involved in social media to report their daily findings and to make science more familiar to the general public. Scientists showing their faces on YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, or Tiktok can make science more friendly, more human, and more relatable. That way, trust can be restored.

What if scientists start showcasing their science?

What does the public win?

As more and more scientists start presenting the science they make, the public will have access to more information. They will certainly begin to learn new things. The increased presence of scientific content on the internet will ignite people’s curiosity and stimulate their critical thinking. The best part is that all the new curiosity will be fed with legitimate content presented by people who understand it. Plus, the content will hopefully be presented in a more relatable and familiar way, making learning science much more enjoyable!

Overall, we’d expect people to become better citizens as they learn more about different subjects while having fun with relatable content produced by scientists.

What do scientists win?

A scientist getting involved in science communication will have the chance to better understand “the big picture” of their research. Science communication forces scientists to think differently and look at their research from new angles.

Also, scientists would make their voices heard. As the general public learns more about their work and as their audience increases, they get more leverage to advocate for social justice supported by their research. Plus, they gain greater trust with the public.

The greater trust increases their reputation, which can certainly come with many more advantages, including new funding sources for their research!

Additionally, by getting involved in science communication, scientists can develop and refine many new skills such as public speaking, teamwork, project management, writing, etc.

What does everyone win?

As mentioned previously, an increased scientific presence in social media may lead to a more educated public who trusts scientists more. People would be more likely to believe scientists and follow instructions proposed by them based on scientific evidence. This will undoubtedly lead to better cooperativity when we fight global warming, try to contain a pandemic, or when we have to deal with any new challenge.

In other words, we don’t lose our planet to global warming, and fewer people will die because of new viruses and preventable diseases.

Seems like a pretty good deal to me.

The COVID 19 Pandemic seems to have restored some of the trust in the scientific community.

Every year, the company 3M performs an international survey trying to quantify how society feels about science. They have been conducting the survey for the past 3 years now. Every year, they saw an increasing mistrust in science from the general public.

This past year, they decided to perform the survey a second time to see if the global pandemic impacted the view that people had of science. For the first time since they started conducting the study, they reported a decrease in people saying that they are skeptical of science! The pandemic didn’t only cause a decline in this number but brought it down to its all-time low at 28%! Before the pandemic, 35% of people reported being skeptical of science. That’s more than 1 in 3 people!

The mistrust in science has decreased during the pandemic partly because scientists were forced to be more involved in science communication, as governments had to maintain the population informed. During this past year, we saw plenty of scientists on television. Dr. Anthony Fauci in the United States and Dr. Theresa Tam in Canada are great examples of new familiar faces from science.

Plus, many scientists using platforms such as Tiktok and Youtube increased their audience since the beginning of the pandemic. Some of my favourite examples are Darrion Nguyen (@lab_shenanigans on Tiktok) and Hank Green (@hankgreen1 on Tiktok).

This is great motivation for new scientists to get out there and start reporting their latest findings in ways that people can understand and relate to.

1. Katsuki Bakugou: not ready for prime time.

first thing we see when we finally get back to our kids is Bakugou being a Shit(TM) and Todoroki being Possibly Oblivious(TM). Have I mentioned how much i love their dynamic? Bakugou is exploding all over as usual and Shouto is like “yeah sure cool”, it’s great.

Of course since he didn’t interview so well....

BAHAHAHAH!! GET FUCKED KACCHAN!! XD Man I missed you trash fire goblin, never change. Also Mina in the bg like “see this is why you can’t have nice things” and awww my baby Ochako, man i missed you kids so much...

2. The news: Fake or just misguided? WHO THE HELL KNOWS

seriously though, it looks like cover story is taking root, already people all over are talking about what “happened” and what it might mean. It’s pretty safe to assume that pretty much everyone here, even the “hero critic” (holy hell that’s an actual profession?? or is he one of those guys who just gets really into his blog?), might be on the payroll of Re-Destro...or rather, Shigaraki. All this to further undermine the current state of affairs. I didn’t really talk about the last chapter, but I really wasn’t expecting the league to JOIN FORCES with the Liberation Army, so this could go in any direction now like seriously there’s no telling where the story could go, and that is fascinating.

On a lighter note...

WE HAVE A MEME FOLKS!! Remember him? It’s “Cant ya see”-kun! He probably gets stopped on the street all the time with that hand gesture, poor guy, an internet celebrity over night, must be a headache XD

Also Ochako (and later but not pictured Mina) looks adorable doing that....can we have Eri doing that??? Please??? Could this be the new draw meme??? Just every character doing the “can’t ya see” gesture??? That would be so cool!

3. HEROES NEED GOOD PRESS YA KNOW: Public Relations 101 with Midnight and Guest lecturer Mt. Lady.

This is an interesting subject, and I’m surprised I didn’t see it coming. Considering how public heroes are in this series, it would make sense that learning public speaking would be an invaluable thing to teach.

Think about it, a long while ago we were told exactly why Endeavor was no.2 for so long despite the fact he solved a lot more incidents then All Might, his public persona was severely lacking in comparison. All Might starred in commercials, TV interviews, the works. Toshi may not be that much of a superstar personality wise, but he sure had a skill for it.

And we all know how Endeavor is, now don’t we.

Shouto will probably have a similar problem with the press, but for different reason. Our poor, poor, stupid boy...

The rest of the kids make a good impression though! All of them confident and smiling, our kids are back and just as glorious as we remember them folks!!

...Baku could use some less confidence. Calling people fools on live television ain’t exactly the way to keep your face from being edited out of the frame. Again.

So overall, the kids are doing great!

4. SHOCKING REVELATION: BUNDLE OF NERVES MIDORIYA IZUKU HAS STAGE FRIGHT. what a shocker.

ahhhh, facing a villain intent on murdering you is one thing, the idea of appearing on national television is quite another set of worms.

ah, he’ll be fine. He’s probably the kind to be really good with speaking under danger, like if he has something else to focus on he has no issue talking a to bunch of people, or even a crowd, at once...but put him on the couch on a talk-show, he’s toast.

But he does have one thing going for him!

A BLOOP! THE BOY HAS A BLOOP!! And he looks so proud of it! Yup, it seems he actually has some measure of control over Black Whip now, so we might see it come into play later on! (also Baku be quiet don’t harsh the bloop vibes!! you’re just jealous that you don’t have a bloop!!

Overall a great chapter to start the new arc, reintroduced to our kids after a long absence, getting hints at future happening, and lots of cute moments! Can’t wait for next week! :D

Building the Woke Web: Web Accessibility, Inclusion & Social Justice

What would your life be like without the internet? Not if it didn’t exist at all, but if you were locked out of it? Would your days be different? Unrecognizable, even? Keeping your answers to that in mind, do you think access to the internet is a human right? Do we need to be able to access it to fully participate in modern society? To answer “yes” to these questions would have been unthinkable 20 years ago.

Living without internet

Globally, over 40% of people still do not have access to the internet. That lack of access and the issues it creates have helped motivate digital equity initiatives like Tech Goes Home and the Good Things Foundation.

Having no access to the internet creates problems in many parts of modern life. In the UK, bank branches are closing, forcing many to do their banking online. Many utilities now require internet access to request or amend services, or get better deals. Civil services, such as registering to vote, are increasingly online. As this continues, people who have no access to broadband or who have limited access to mobile data fall behind—this often includes homeless people, elderly people, and those on low incomes who are already operating at a disadvantage.

In the UK, only 37% of people living in social housing are online. Approximately 1 in 5 adults with a disability in the UK have not used the internet recently, and they make up half of the people who have not accessed the internet in the last three months. Globally, the UN target for affordable mobile data is 2% of monthly income for 1GB data, and yet many countries are still nowhere near reaching this goal. Not having access to the internet is expensive, locking you out of essential services and a surfeit of helpful information. Giving people full access to the splendors and knowledge of the online world should be imperative for everyone who works on it.

Digital exclusion is when someone is unable or unwilling to access information and services online. In the UK, 10% of the adult population was digitally excluded in 2018. The number of people in the UK lacking basic digital skills is decreasing, but in 2018, 8% of adults in the UK (4.3 million people) were estimated to have zero basic digital skills, which means they are unable to do things like buy items online, verify information, or send an email. Women are more likely to have no basic digital skills.

Being unable to send an email, submit an application online, or use a government site is a huge barrier to civic and societal engagement. Shopping in person, rather than online, can mean you are consistently overcharged for your purchase by as much as 13%. Not knowing how to use computers can mean you earn less in the first place. Not being able to use the internet can mean that you spend more time doing tasks such as registering to vote, paying council tax in the UK, or researching your next holiday.

Being able to access the internet has social and psychological ramifications too. Loneliness is well documented as a risk factor for a number of health issues, as well as early death. Being online can help you feel less alone. Half of all people with disabilities surveyed report feeling lonely in the UK, and a quarter of them are lonely every day. People with disabilities are more likely to be a captive audience to apps and websites using their data inappropriately or engaging in other unethical practices. This may be because they rely on a particular site to interact with other people with disabilities, because they lack the tools to visit other sites, or lack other suitable websites or apps to use.

Richer households are more likely to have full basic digital skills. The UK Office for National Statistics found that people without basic digital skills are three times as likely to be in low-income bands. In 2018, 12% of 11-to-18-year-olds had no broadband access on a tablet or computer, which 68% of them said made it difficult to do homework. Further, households in which one or more of their members have a disability make up half of those living in poverty in the UK.

Provide non-online options for vital services

If you work in government, food supply, healthcare, or utilities, there is no excuse for not providing offline options. In doing so you are excluding some of the most marginalized people. The internet is amazing, but it is not the only way to share information.

A non-exhaustive list of other barriers

Having access to the internet in the first place is one issue, and feeling welcome, or even safe is quite another. Even when your broadband connection is as good as can be hoped for, there are many other ways you can be discouraged or stopped from using the internet.

Trolling and threats

Online harassment is one of many barriers stopping people from accessing the internet. Diane Abbott, the first black woman Member of Parliament (MPs) in the UK, received almost half (45.14%) of all abusive tweets sent to female MPs in the run-up to the 2017 General Election that decided how voters would be represented in Parliament and which party would govern. Black and Asian women MPs got 35% more abusive tweets than white women MPs. The abuse directed at Dianne Abott amounted to 10 times as much as was received by any other female MP, according to an Amnesty International study.

Mermaids is a charity that supports transgender children and their parents in the UK. Their CEO Susie Green—herself the parent of a transgender child—has been targeted with abuse and threats. The rise in abusive and threatening comments led to Mermaids’ Twitter account having to block up to 20 accounts a day.

Trolling isn’t an easy problem to fix. Allowing users to block certain words and hide certain replies on Twitter is a start, but listening to people from marginalized backgrounds and their complaints and ideas would be another critical place to begin.

We need to think long and hard about what good moderation looks like and what guidelines work in online spaces to ensure those accessing them don’t have to wade through a tide of bigotry.

Sidelining and hiding certain groups

Information and support online are vital for at-risk LGBT people, whether to help them escape dangerous situations, access support, or find community. Yet in schools, words relating to LGBT issues are often blocked. On YouTube, videos relating to LGBT issues are demonetized, age-restricted, or even removed. This isn’t because the content is sexually explicit or not safe for work. It’s just discrimination. TikTok recently admitted it actively discriminates against certain kinds of users—namely the fat, queer, disabled, low-income, and “ugly”—in certain feeds, under the guise of paternalistic protection from bullying.

Exclusionary design

People with disabilities are the original life hackers because our motivation is so high. If we don’t hack we often go without.

Many people with disabilities rely on screen readers and screen reader compatible sites to use the internet. Screen readers can be prohibitively expensive; while there are free options, one of the most popular screen readers at the time of writing costs nearly $1200 for a professional license. Even with incredible innovation coming from within the disabled community, there’s more that everyone else can do. In their February 2020 evaluation, WebAIM found that 98.1% of the top million websites had detectable WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2 errors.

The most common WCAG 2 failures—such as missing alt text for images, having empty links, and missing form labels—would be relatively simple to fix. Because they’re shared among most websites, concentrating on fixing them would have a huge overall benefit for the internet. But as long as web accessibility standards are applied without rigor, aspects of a vast number of sites remain inaccessible even once users have a screen reader or other assistive technology.

Hostile conditions

Inclusion is just as pertinent as accessibility, and tackling only one side of the equation will leave some people just as locked out. Accessibility without inclusion is not real accessibility. The curb cut effect, wherein improving access for people with disabilities improves access for all, isn’t the only reason to increase web accessibility. We have a moral responsibility as tech workers to use any privilege we may have to facilitate, respond to, and support the efforts of marginalized people who are working to carve out accessible spaces for themselves.

Hostile conditions, created or reinforced by engineering and design choices, make being on the internet harder for people who are queer, of color, or disabled. They make it more difficult to access life-saving spaces, social spaces, and civic spaces—both on and offline. Thorough accessibility and real inclusion are the solutions to these problems. To survive, marginalized people must work both against and through the abuse and accessibility issues they face on online platforms, whereas everyone else gets to use the internet as they wish. This replicates the injustices of offline in the online world.

An incomplete list of solutions

Center the voices and experiences of the marginalized

There isn’t one easy solution but to start finding the solutions that are possible we need to center the voices and experiences of the marginalized. Marginalized people with insights to share aren’t hard to find when you start listening. They are your next users, your future developers, your fledgling marketing team. Excluding them reduces your options, your appeal, and your breadth of ideas.

Hire teams that are diverse on every axis

Hiring inclusively creates teams full of people who aren’t like you or each other. And those kinds of teams build better products, bring better ideas to the table, and better reflect the user base of the majority of products. It is important to remember that diversity isn’t just about race or hiring women; there are neurodiverse people, people with physical disabilities, people of other genders, people from various backgrounds, and many other marginalizations than could be listed here.

Proactively promote inclusion and harness your team’s diversity

Help disabled and otherwise marginalized people both develop and enforce policies and practices that protect them and allow them to thrive. If there are no disabled people, or otherwise marginalized or underrepresented people on your team, take a hard look at your hiring practices, your work culture, even the layout of your office. If you can’t find these problems, hire experts. Pay specialist consultants and recruiters to root out the problems. This is an investment that makes moral, logical, and business sense. The inclusive team you build will be able to spot potential issues in a way that a squad of people who pattern match to narrow ideas of what a tech worker should look and behave like never would. Create a culture where the marginalized members of your team feel supported, feel heard, and are buoyed through their work with a sense of safety in their workplace.

Avoid legal issues preemptively

Beyonce and Domino’s Pizza were both sued under the Americans with Disabilities Act, which contains provisions to force the companies involved to change their websites. Beyonce’s case is still in progress, but Domino’s both lost their suit and had their appeal tossed out. Both cases were about visually impaired people being unable to access their sites and complete purchases. Accessibility is often seen as a costly detour from the “real work” of building projects, but that has never and will never be true. You want users, and users of all stripes want to use your products.

The banks HSBC, Metro Bank, and Halifax made it hard for visually impaired users to access all of their services online. When HSBC was told they had made it difficult for a user with visual impairments to access bank statements, they replied, “don’t worry, we’ll send you a video.” The Equality Act 2010 in the UK means that these users can sue. In addition to serving the far more important goal of providing people with disabilities equal access, embracing inclusive design from the outset would have saved these companies time while enhancing their trust among the public rather than putting it at risk. Fixing the content is usually much cheaper for the organization than fighting the matter in court.

Advocate for accessibility and inclusivity in any way you can, be it big or small

Caption your videos, Instagram content, Facebook photos, Twitter photos, conference and meetup talks, etc. Make information needed to access your product or service available in multiple formats. Speak up against problems in your workplace; if an internal hiring tool is hard for you to use, it is hard for others. If one of your websites has errors from WCAG 2’s list, advocate for taking time to fix it. If the gender options available on forms are “man,” “woman,” and “other,” speak up yourself, tell your manager, question whether you need to collect gender information at all. Don’t stay silent.

Test your website with tools, devices, and real end users

Run tools like axe, ChromeLens, and Lighthouse during your build processes. Do manual testing with the actual devices that are used by your end-users, and test with real users with access requirements. If you’re a team of one or a few, ensure that you run these tools from MVP to finished product—the errors that are the easiest to catch and fix will mostly be caught by automated tools, and they are a great start for learning more about accessibility. Websites such as The A11y Project compile resources, and there are other websites, Slack groups, Twitter accounts, and newsletters that are also incredibly helpful for answering any questions. The automated tools will give you the keywords to search for.

Working towards an accessible, inclusive internet

Web accessibility is not an optional extra. What inclusion looks like in practice will depend on your products, your users, and what you intend to achieve, but for it to be real and meaningful in any context, it cannot be an afterthought. Engineering that makes inclusion an afterthought is engineering that operates without morality and in doing so actively enacts harm. The fact that this kind of engineering is commonplace on the internet doesn’t make it OK. It just highlights that the way we have built the web is fundamentally broken. We can do better.

“Wokeness,” at least as conceived by those divorced from the black experience and AAVE, isn’t a great concept. The way it is used in popular culture makes it sound as if being a good person is a switch you flip on and off; you’re woke or ’sleep. But wokeness is not the end state, it’s the beginning of a journey. All the tenets of intersectional feminism, web accessibility, and diversity and inclusion are inextricably tied up in making the web a better place, for all and by all. Access to the internet is essential. Staying woke, and acting on that wokeness, is what will lead us to a better internet for everyone.

My Review of... ‘Passengers’

I finally got around to seeing the movie Passengers (2016) and umm… what the hecking heck was that?!?!

[Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD!]

CASTING PROBLEMS:

First of all, I know it’s supposed to be everybody’s cinematic wet dream, putting Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt together (the way people wanted to see what the offspring of the two so-called “most beautiful people in the world” - Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt - would look like). It was the people’s experiment! Put these two “likeable”, “relatable”, “funny”, good-looking people together, and watch the movie magic unfold! So riddle me this: why put these two in a sci-fi drama of all things, when a simple rom-com would have sufficed!?

Second, I don’t think these two had much chemistry. Sure, they don’t do anything empirically wrong (save a little overacting here and there), but I just didn’t believe them as a couple. I was very aware that I was watching two people acting the way you think two people should when they’re in love. You can practically see the weight of everyone’s expectations on their shoulders. Be sexy! Be charming! Be perfect! I wondered if they had any fun making this movie at all!

I also found something very odd about this pairing. Maybe it’s the age difference (25, at the time, to his 36)? I find that Lawrence tends to play too mature for her real age, playing a lot of late-20′s or 30-something characters. She has lots of time for that, but I guess she’s highly bankable right now and can physically play a wide range? Hollywood is not kind to women. They cast a 25 year old as a 35 year old, and a 35 year old as dust (but that’s another story). Or maybe it’s the imbalance of star power? She is arguably the bigger star. Either way, something was off.

I maintain that Pratt’s best work is as a comedic actor. I know he’s trying to branch out or whatever, but I just don’t buy him as a “leading man”. Not in an all-out, dramatic role. Not yet, anyway. He was good in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) as the wise-cracking, cocksure rebel. And in Jurassic World (2015) as a more rugged, wise-cracking, cocksure rebel. And in The Magnificent Seven (2016) as an EVEN MORE rugged, wise-cracking, cocksure rebel. He just didn’t quite fit the bill here for me. Although he plays it straight, he kept making me laugh unintentionally (that’s the problem with getting typecast). Especially with three, count em’, one, two, THREE gratuitous butt shots. (We get it!!! BUTTS!). Anyway, dozens of other, half-decent “name” actors could have done a perfectly serviceable job in this role, so by casting Pratt, you’re asking for something that only Pratt can do well. Let him do his thing if that’s why you like him so much!

CHARACTER/STORY PROBLEMS:

Right away, the movie has parallels to the extremely hard-to-top The Martian (2015). But this film has neither the charm, humour, or the gravitas. I found myself comparing Jim to Mark Watney. Both are stranded and alone, both have technical skills. However, unlike Jim, Mark has the mental fortitude NOT to crack almost immediately under pressure. Not that I judge Jim, but the emotional progression in The Martian seems more steady and realistic than in this, which dealt with its characters' emotional journeys very superficially. I didn’t feel that the movie did a good enough job of tapping into Jim’s early despair, psychology, or the agoraphobia of space. At one point when things start to go wrong with the ship, Lawrence’s character says that she was trapped in her room for days. Show me, don’t tell me! That would have been interesting to see! Just as it would have been interesting to see (not just glean) how Jim and Aurora live out the remainder of their years. I thought the movie would eventually get to it. They don’t. Superficiality was a running theme.

Another one of the film’s downfalls is the lack of curiosity about its own premise: the science fiction of it all! I wondered about their training on Earth beforehand, and why Jim doesn’t scan through the other bios to find a doctor, biologist, or another engineer - someone with whom he can work the problem! I want so badly for Jim to “science the shit” out of something, as Watney does. Instead, he opts for the company of the aptly named (if not a little on-the-nose) sleeping beauty, Aurora; a writer, who isn’t very helpful in that regard. For such a futuristic premise, the story is disappointingly regressive. (i.e. a love interest with nothing to offer but being pretty? Okay).

The two of them experience no real sense of existential wonder/dread, curiosity about the ship, about the technology, about space. It's all restaurants and fucking on cafeteria tables! They might as well have been at an Earth resort! At one point, they are literally standing up close to a Red Giant, but they look at it for all of two seconds before they’re like “OK cool. Welp! Let’s go have sex now!” This isn’t so much a science fiction movie as it is a 'bottle' drama, that happens to be set on a space ship. The location is completely secondary, and the beautiful visuals of space and the ship are just convenient backdrops to the “will they or won’t they?” romance. *Sigh*.

One of the most interesting parts of the story, I found, which they don't even discuss, is the nebulous “Homestead Corporation”. It manufactures faulty pods, and even in the future on other planets, it treats passengers by class. I wonder what sort of civilization they hope to create on a new planet by doing this. Is this the reality that people have accepted in the future? Is there any opposition to this? By whom? They mention other colonies: what do they look like? How do they function politically? Do other countries or competing companies possess these technologies too? Is it completely private, non-governmental or governmental? If so, do countries own planets, or is it just corporations? They could make a whole movie out of this! (Copyright: Specsnsarcasm, 2017. haha)! In essence, it’s similar to the Weyland Corporation in Alien (1979) & Prometheus (2012).

MAJOR PROBLEMS

Arthur and its whole vibe. I was instantly creeped out by Arthur the android (played by the delightful Martin Sheen). It operates a bar that is decorated in 70′s decor that is reminiscent of The Shining (1980). The reason for this retro aesthetic is kind of confusing and jarring on such a futuristic vessel (but sure!). But it also primed me to think that, like the bartender in The Shining, there was something amiss about Arthur. It befriends (as much as an android can) Jim first, then Aurora. Early on, Jim entrusts it not to divulge his terrible secret to Aurora. A promise which Arthur makes, yet readily betrays. But why would Arthur tell her? It’s an android, it has no moral imperative to divulge the truth. Nor does it have any reason to show loyalty to Aurora over Jim or betray an expressed request. This tricked me into thinking there was an Alien/Prometheus situation going on with Arthur, in that it was secretly behind some of the mischief that was going on aboard the ship. But OF COURSE that turned out to be a red herring (because that would be TOO interesting). The reason for Arthur’s slip is NEVER explained, nor is it ever addressed. Jim isn’t even mad! He doesn’t even find it strange that he was outed by the machine, and they literally never mention it again. WTF?

Laurence Fishburne is utterly wasted in this film! Practically blink-and-you’ll-miss-him (rude)! He only wakes up so that the two protagonist can have a mind-boggling, deus ex machina way of saving themselves with his security clearance bracelet thingie. And why was his pod the only faulty pod to cause terminal illness? (THAT'S RACIST! Jk. lol). Shouldn’t Jim have also had some health problems, though less severe? (Sometimes I wonder why Larry and Sam Jackson put up with this shit, but ANYway...👀). Also embarrassingly wasted in his role is Andy Garcia there at the end. Poor, poor Andy. Such disrespect! He grew that great big beautiful bushy beard for nothing! lol.

Also, why is there only ONE medical pod on a ship with 5000 ppl and 258 crew? That ratio seems dangerously low and irresponsible to me, even if they were only intended to survive on the ship out of suspension for 4 months before reaching the planet.

CONCLUSION

In the end, I’m not upset because this was a romance posing as sci-fi film. I would have loved to see a good sci-fi OR a good romance movie. Unfortunately, this rather middling on both fronts. It had boundless potential, and I guess I just expected more. With the quality of TV shows these days (as well as the price of a movie), you’re going to have to do a lot more than toss two good looking people on screen with some candy coloured effects to get people interested.

I suspect this film started out as an entirely different movie than the one we ended up with (judging from the big name actors in almost cameo roles). Perhaps it had more of a sci-fi story, but it was changed to feature the love story more heavily?

On the pairing: as much as the internet likes to get its way and see the fruits of its fan pairings come to life on screen, I think this is a cautionary tale about how real life sometimes falls short of our imagination (see: the Veronica Mars movie). It’s also yet another cautionary tale for Hollywood about why they need to re-evaluate their strategy of big budget SFX movies with paltry scripts. The ability to develop interesting, in-depth characters is why cable television and streaming services are eclipsing movies, who routinely struggle to meet box-office expectations.

THE STORY

Kherson was not a wealthy town, but every man walked the same broken streets and every child played on the same rusted swingsets. When everyone’s poor, it becomes difficult to notice the difference. And so, though their family was certainly affected by poverty, Elena never considered herself lesser than her neighbors. She was an optimistic girl, always spinning dismal situations into opportunities for challenge and adventure. She was also a sister, her elder brother Yakov always on her mind. She thought the world of Yakov, and gazed at him like the sun was something he’d made just for her. It was during languid winter evenings that she felt his presence over him, like milk in coffee. The two of them would steal daubs of cream from their mother’s cherry cakes and squat beneath the tablecloth licking their fingertips. In the evenings after school, the two would be delivered to their gymnastics lessons, where they leaped and tumbled and shrieked with joy. There was nothing quite so beautiful as watching Yakov move. This was why – when she realized his love of movement was tantamount to her love of him – she begged her parents to buy him dance lessons. Surely it would make him the happiest boy in Kherson, and his happiness was all that she desired.

It was one year later, when their family salvaged the money to send Yakov to a dance school, that she begun to realize the implications of his education. He was older than her, and would be sent to better schools before she even applied to them. He would become successful and famous, and she would be left to gather dust. It dawned on her when he returned from his first day of dance school, wild and elated and everything Elena had hoped he would be. Everything she now feared she would never become. She locked herself in her bedroom and seethed with envy and wallowed in defeat. As her frustration grew, so did the demons within her, gaining in size and materialization. They took the form of massive black serpents that coiled around her and hissed viciously. She stood to run, but they vanished as quickly as she’d summoned them. Illusion manipulation. Of course. What better ability for the stupid optimist, expected to follow her brother’s footsteps and destined to fail? Elena’s envy was never of malicious intent, though. She still loved Yakov and attended his every performance. Reciprocatively, he attended her gymnastic tournaments and always cheered the loudest.

She was 13 when Yakov redeemed her. Only 18 and he was already internationally acclaimed, published in magazine articles and beloved in internet fanpages. He was essentially begged by the Moscow State Academy of Choreography to attend, and offered his any desire in return for his attendance. Everwilling to test his boundaries, Yakov demanded Elena’s acceptance into the institution alongside him despite her being several years too young. Thus began her becoming – a stranger to dance, she required a personal trainer, but Elena was a fast learner and Yakov wasn’t against teaching her himself in his spare time. She fell in love with training with her brother, and in her second year was performing near flawlessly. The duo became known in equal measure for their hard work and humor. Two years later, the shock of their expulsion was completely unforeseen. She didn’t know why it happened, only that it was sudden and devastating. For Yakov, whose whole life had been ballet, the expulsion was especially hard. Before she could settle herself – before she could take a breath and evaluate their options – her brother had made the rash decision to join the the Rosteks. She could only follow.

THE CHARACTER

Stronger than all the forces of the universe – stronger than the pull of a thousand black holes – is her love for Yakov. When she learned his expulsion was an act of vila discrimination, Elena became furious and decisive: their Rostek recruitment wasn’t the right move; it was the only move. Despite her training in the Moscow Academy, Elena still has the body – and fearless mettle – of a gymnast. Given the proper incentive, she will stop at nothing to meet her goals. Unfortunately for her enemies, the Rosteks are extremely persuasive. Although she still retains much of her youthful charm, Elena is not against dirtying her hands to achieve her goals.
